Commemorations are held in poland overnight marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the second world war. The world of motorsport pays tribute to formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert killed in a crash at the belgian grand prix circuit. The formula one race will go ahead on the same track later today. Its the 1st of september. As far as meteorologists are concerned, the first day of the autumn. It will feel like it as well. A cool day for us, with a mix of sunshine and showers. Its sunday, 1st september. Our top story English Schools rated as outstanding by ofsted will no longer be exempt from inspections, under new government plans. The department for education says that, as of last summer, almost 300 schools hadnt been assessed for more than a decade. It said the changes would give parents up to date information about their childs education and ensure standards remain high. Alexandra mackenzie reports. Its the beginning of a new school year. Time for the education secretary to unveil what he calls a raft of new measures for schools in england. High performing schools will receive funding to provide more support for ones that are struggling. Top rated schools will no longer be exempt from routine ofsted inpections. Some have not been inspected for a decade. And to turn around the most challenging schools, a new Specialist Academy trust is to be piloted. This will help those that have been underperforming for some time. This comes just after the pms announcement of billions of pounds of extra spending for primary and secondary schools in england over the next three years. The government says it will now focus on standards in education, and supporting the teaching staff. Labour says this is an embarrassing admission, but the education policies of successive tory governments have failed. And too many of its offered Solutions Just offer more of the same. Five people have been killed and many more injured after a mass shooting in the us state of texas. The suspect, a white male, was shot dead yesterday in a stand off with police. Our news correspondent andy moore has this report. Five killed, that is confirmed by the police chief. At first it was thought two gunmen were on the loose. Panic spread far and wide. People were evacuated from this shopping centre, including the presenter at the local tv station. There are people running through the mall, not sure why. Are we going to go back to programming . No, were going to leave and slip away, we dont know what is going on. As the gunman was finally cornered near a cinema complex, people were urged to take cover. Police said the gunman had started his shooting spree after a simple traffic stop. Several Police Officers were among the injured, and a child under two. He is a white male in his mid 30s. I dont have a positive identification on him yet. I have an idea who he is, but i wont release that information until we are absolutely positive. The Vice President said the white house was being fully briefed on the incident. The president and i and our administration remain absolutely determined to work with leaders of both parties and congress to take such steps that we can address and confront the scourge of mass atrocities in our country. There have been 140 victims of such mass atrocities so far this year. The same as in the whole of last year. The eus lead brexit negotiator, michel barnier, says the uk has come to a moment of truth on how it will leave the European Union. He again rejected Prime Minister borisjohnsons demand to remove the irish backstop, the policy intended to avoid a hard border on the island of ireland, and said he wasnt optimistic about avoiding a no deal scenario. Lets get more from our Political Correspondent susana mendonca. After days of hearing from downing street that a new deal could be thrashed out, this is somewhat contradictory. It does seem to threw cold water on the claim that the new deal could be arranged. Here we have the lead negotiator for the deal could be arranged. Here we have the lead negotiatorfor the European Union effectively saying that what they have offered so far on the backstop represents maximum flexibility in what they can offer. Essentially saying the backstop could not be removed. Michel barnier suggesting that he is not optimistic that our new deal rags it could be avoided. No deal brexit be avoided. No deal brexit be avoided. Borisjohnson avoided. No deal brexit be avoided. Boris johnson is avoided. No deal brexit be avoided. Borisjohnson is due to meet some tory members who are not happy with what is happening. With the prospect of our no deal seemingly being accepted as likely in the European Union, this week we we re in the European Union, this week we were going to see a pr offensive in this country. We are. We have heard a lot about this in the last few weeks. It is the campaign called get ready for brexit and it is about giving people information about what are no deal could mean for them. There are lots of people worried the concept of no deal. We can expect more protests to come. Next week we will have mps potentially trying to make their move to stop the idea of no deal brexit. Hong kong police have violently tackled suspected protesters after thousands marched in the city in defiance ofa ban. Crowds of people took to the streets on saturday to mark the fifth anniversary of chinas government banning full democratic elections. Our china correspondent Stephen Mcdonnell sent us this report from hong kong. Activists have, to an extent at least, achieved their goal here at the airport in hong kong. That gate there is where passengers would normally come out to reach buses. You can see its closed, theres a barricade thats been built to stop them coming in or out. The idea was to cause transport chaos. And here are the protesters, pro democracy activists who again defied the authorities, defied warnings that to have a rally like this risks arrest, the potential of being charged with illegal assembly, and they are moving around the airport from place to place, trying to block various parts of the transport infrastructure, for example the airport express Train Services had to be stopped, as well. I think it can only be a matter of time until the police try and clear them away from here but you can tell that this problem is going to keep going for many hours in the airport unless protesters are forced to go. A powerful storm threatening the bahamas and south eastern coast of the us has grown to category four, and is expected to strengthen even more. States of emergency have been declared across many of the regions at risk, including florida, where residents are preparing for when the storm hits land. President trump has described the incoming Hurricane Dorian as extremely dangerous. The hurricane is roaring in, it could be a big one. We are hoping that it may be makes a right and goes up north, but that is about a 5 chance, it is not looking good. And its one of the biggest hurricanes weve seen in a long time, a long time, so it could be very devastating. As weve been hearing this morning, schools rated 0utstanding by ofsted can go years without being inspected. In may last year, there were 300 which hadnt been assessed for more than a decade. The government wants that to change now, saying parents deserve more up to date information. Lets get more on this now from laura mcinerney, an education columnist and former teacher. In principle, a good idea to reintroduce these inspections . Yes, i think it is. It is something that 0fsted has been asking for for some time. They are very concerned that when you have schools that havent had an inspector and then for more than a decade, there could not be problems in those schools. And pa rents problems in those schools. And parents dont have the correct information. Inspections will always be controversial. They dont often give the full account of what a school can offer. Having somebody go infora school can offer. Having somebody go in for a couple of days, that is not an amazing system. 0fsted have spent an amazing system. 0fsted have spent a lot of time and effort changing the methods by which these inspectors are looking at schools. You have to decide if something is better than nothing. We spent a lot of money on education every year and the government are trying to make sure that every parent can be assured that their scholars of a good quality. Why was it decided that these guns could be exempt in the first place . It happened in 2011, michael gove was education secretary. He said it was about rewarding leaders who were outstanding. At that time we were looking down the barrel of austerity. Every department needed to make outs. Partly, it was about budgets. It meant that each year 0fsted didnt have to go back to theirfull 0fsted didnt have to go back to their full to several thousand schools. Head teachers are worried that some funding could be siphoned off to pay for these inspections. We havent heard yet if 0fsted will get more money to do this. It is possible that some of the budget coming infor possible that some of the budget coming in for education could go towards that. The government have been clear in their announcement is that they want to see more cash going to schools. A couple of reactions from reviewers this morning. And these days we would all wa nt morning. And these days we would all want our children to go joint standing schools. School inspections are anxious times. The statistics seem to speak for themselves here. But there should be a level Playing Field when it comes to inspections. Natalie says i think it is a good idea, things move on. Having an outstanding status for geelong could encourage complacency. I dont know, that schools could be sitting on this outstanding status for a long time, could be complacent. this outstanding status for a long time, could be complacent. I think we do have some evidence for that. A survey im involved in find that the teacher and outstanding schools, around one in four of them say they think their school has the wrong grades. We are also seeing 0fsted going back in and looking at these outstanding schools. Last year, twice as many of the outstanding schools that they went back into lost their rating. It is not necessarily complacency, but those rates no longer stand. They are also talking about new Specialist Academy trusts being set up to turnaround the most challenging schools. This will be specifically in the north of england. Havent we heard this somewhere before . Thats right, a few years ago the government gave cash to schools that recalled northern hubs. They were Academy Trusts that existed and were given cash to take over challenging schools that nobody else wanted to ta ke schools that nobody else wanted to take on. Unfortunately, and at these two of those cases we have seen a no go particularly well and those Academy Trusts are no longer looking after schools. It is slightly strange that they are doing this again, that they build new Academy Trusts to take over those schools. I think the government are thinking, when we have stuck schools, we have to do something, this is something, may it didnt work last time, but lets try it once more. Thank you very much for your time this morning. 0fsted would greatly very bad for pronouncing your surname wrong sorry about that. Sorry about that. Heres ben with a look at this mornings weather. It is the 1st of september, the first day of meteorological autumn. It is not looking too bad for some of us. Sunshine is part of the story today, but there will also be showers, some of which will be heavy. It will feel cooler. The cool air is moving in behind this band of cloud that brought the rain yesterday. You can see the speckled cloud, some shower clouds and that feet of airfrom cloud, some shower clouds and that feet of air from the north west bringing something much cooler than what we have been used to recently. We are starting off with showers drifting in from the north and west. Further south and east it is a dry and bright start to the day with some of that sunshine. At ten oclock, showers developing across scotland, or continuing to develop, some of which could be heavy and thundery. 12 degrees for glasgow. Some of the showers getting into Northern Ireland, summoned to north west england. Some photo south west and wales. Elsewhere, a dry start and wales. Elsewhere, a dry start and we will see spells of sunshine. Through the day we will continue to see showers in Northern Ireland, scotland, drifting down into Northern England, potentially getting down to east anglia at times. The further south and west you are the more dry weather. Last sunday, some places got up to 33 degrees. Today the maxim is the maximum is between 13 20. For monty, this band of wet weather will move in overnight. It will be a cold night with towns and cities between 68d. Night with towns and cities between 6 8d. Certainly, a very cool start tomorrow morning. I pressure in charge initially, so a lot of dry weather and early sunshine, but a frontal system approaching from the north west. We will notice more in the way of Cloud Development through the way of Cloud Development through the day. Some drizzly weather for western fringes of england and wales are more general rain for Northern Ireland, scotland and the far north of england. As for temperatures tomorrow, no great shakes. Temperatures between 15 22. It will start to feel milder with more of a south westerly wind starting to develop. That milderfield does not last too long. Through the week we will see more rain at times. A renewed push of cool air from will see more rain at times. A renewed push of cool airfrom mid week onwards. Temperatures in the middle teens across the northern half of the uk. Certainly, a cooler feel to our weather as we head into the start of autumn. Events are taking place to mark 80 years since hitlers invasion of poland. Two days later, britain and france declared war on germany. Ceremonies began in the early hours of the morning in the polish city of wielun, where the bombs first fell. Lets get more on this now from adam easton, who is in the countrys capital, warsaw. Lots of commemorations planned today, several key World Leaders there. It all began last night . Thats right. We have already had two ceremonies into different locations the german army and navy attacked poland first at dawn exactly 80 years ago. One of them near gdansk. Also in wielun, where wave after wave of live traffic dropped bombs, destroying 75 of the buildings in that city and killing more than a thousand people. It was not a military target. The idea was to sue terror amongst the polish population. This is the idea of this blitzkrieg attack. The polish president and the german president have already spoken from their this morning. The german president in the polish language said that he bowed his head to the victims of german tyranny and he asks for forgiveness. Ceremonies taking place all day today. Behind me you can see the main event will be in the square. Leaders from a0 countries will be taking part. We have speeches from mike pence and from the polish president as well. It is a solemn day for poland. This was a global conflict that was devastating for the world, but particularly for poland. More than 5 million polish citizens, including 3 million polish dues were murdered in the second world war, 17 of the population. You touch on the fact that Vice President mike pence is there representing donald trump, who cancelled the trip because of Hurricane Dorian. Dominic rab is there representing the british. Vladimir putin was not invited. Thats true. A glaring omission in some peoples guys. The soviet union was the voice that defeated the nazis on the eastern front. The Red Army Troops liberated many of the countries of this region, including poland. They kicked out the nazi occupiers. I remember ten years ago, the 17th anniversary, then by minister Vladimir Putin was invited, this time he is not invited. The polish did not think it was appropriate to invite him after russias actions in the ukraine, also its involvement in the conflict in eastern ukraine. The polish people said they didnt think it was appropriate to invite him. Adam, thank you. Adam, thank you. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news, its time now for a look at the newspapers. Lets look at the front pages. The sunday times leads on its interview with the Prime Minister, who says conservative mps face an historic choice this week lets look at the front pages. The sunday times leads on its interview with the Prime Minister, lets look at the front pages. The sunday times leads on its interview with the Prime Minister, who says conservative mps face an historic choice this week they can either back him to deliver brexit, orface chaos under the labour leaderjeremy corbyn. The sunday telegraph leads on comments by the eus chief negotiator, michel barnier, who says the irish backstop will not be scrapped. The paper also reports that the Prime Minister is preparing for a showdown with tory rebels who are campaigning to block no deal. The main picture on the front of the sunday express is from yesterdays protests in london, as thousands turned out to campaign against the suspension of parliament. The paper says an election could be triggered within days if a no deal brexit is successfully stopped. The observer reports on calls for a top level investigation into the Prime Ministers chief aide, dominic cummings, after he sacked one of the chancellors advisors. Cary cooper is here to tell us whats caught his eye. How do you describe your full title . Professor sir kerry cooper this caught my eye. At column by kirsty alsop in the daily mail talking about the decision from Ruth Davidson to quit as conservative leader in scotland. Obviously, it is partly political but merely personal, at least thats what she says. A respected politician, and these days there arent many of them. Trying to raise a family and trying to do the job she has is very difficult. It raises the issue that we have in the uk, in the developed world, about worklife balance. Women need more flexibility and the needs more new men or the equivalent of them. They need their partners to help out. She raises the issue, can you pursue a difficult career and be able to develop a relationship with your partner, with your kids. Flexible working is the answer. Employers have to sign up more and more to that. There are particular challenges with the worlds of politics. She talked about campaigning, being back on the road, being away from home. I know lots of otherjobs being away from home. I know lots of other jobs involve those being away from home. I know lots of otherjobs involve those challenges, but it is particularly hard. It is very ha rd but it is particularly hard. It is very hard being a politician. If you go to sweden, go to the parliament in sweden, there are a lot of women in it. Many more than we have because they allow flexible working. There are options. It is difficult with the media on you, but nevertheless, we can do a lot more. This is rather alarming, for people who spent a sizeable part of their day sitting on a sofa. Couch potato lifestyle will double the risk of an early death. Isnt it interesting, this is a major study of 23,000 adults over a couple of decades. The chance of a deadly heart attack or stroke is a higher than those people who regularly did at least two hours of exercise a week. We need to be more active. This is really important for us. Exercise for kids, for all of us. We dont need much, a couple of hours a week. If we do have problems, at the top of that article in the telegraph, it says that they have just implanted microchip into the heart of people who have Heart Disease. You can rely ona who have Heart Disease. You can rely on a minicomputer in your heart to save you if you have let your body go to. Know, you want to prevent them, but the technology cannot be implanted in your heart if you have Heart Disease to alert the authorities directly at some Central Place that this person is in trouble. That is the future. Elsewhere, Penny Lancaster has been talking about her experiences of being bullied in school in particular. There is a whole charity, backed by the duke of cambridge. What she is doing is making videos to take to kids about bullying. We have 10 million kids going back to school tomorrow, tuesday or wednesday. 5 million of them will experience a form of bullying. The teachers are alert to it, but the kids are telling their pa rents. It, but the kids are telling their parents. They are frightened of telling anybody. This charity is trying to get people to talk. Telling anybody. This charity is trying to get people to talkm telling anybody. This charity is trying to get people to talk. It is not so visible these days because so much of it happens online. And the kids to talk about it, which is bad. Asa kids to talk about it, which is bad. As a university professor, we will finish with yourfinal as a university professor, we will finish with your final story in a moment about kids going off to university, but before that, and inspiring story from the sunday mirror about young people who ove rca m e mirror about young people who overcame childhood cancer. This young boy plays for Manchester City amputees. He suffered from cancer, lost his leg, but now he said i have a lwa ys lost his leg, but now he said i have always wanted to play football and he plays for the amputees football tea m he plays for the amputees Football Team for Manchester City. He wants to play in the world cup. That is a lovely story. And the girl who lost her sight at a young age, as well. She ended up going to university. She ended up going to university. She has done a University Degree and started working for an mp. She now wa nts to started working for an mp. She now wants to work in a charity that helps people with their eyesight. This boy as a baby had a seven hour operation and is now a gymnast who wa nts to operation and is now a gymnast who wants to go to the olympics. This is hope. The resilience of children. A wonderful story. This is about kids going off to university. Middle class parents who stated their kids i am going to really miss you, the overprotective middle class kids. Call me everyday. Barbara nelen did a really nice story on this. We have to let them go free. The beautiful thing about britain that i love is kids going away from home. In the us they dont, you probably have to stay in your state or city. In britain, we are creating independent people. Please, parents, trust them. Leave them alone. Dont call them every day. No chance of my kids calling me when they get to that stage. If they want money, they will stay with us, the headlines are coming up. Hello, this is breakfast with rogerjohnson and rachel burden. Heres a summary of this mornings main news. English schools rated as outstanding by ofsted will no longer be exempt from inspections, under new government plans. The eus lead brexit negotiator, michel barnier, says the uk has come to a moment of truth on how it will leave the European Union. He again rejected Boris Johnsons demand to remove the irish backstop the policy intended to avoid a hard border on the island of ireland and said he wasnt optimistic about avoiding a no deal scenario. His comments come after thousands of people took to the streets across the uk yesterday to protest against the Prime Ministers decision to suspend parliament. Ceremonies began in the early hours of this morning in the polish city of wielun, where the bombs first fell. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, willjoin more than a0 World Leaders at commemorations in warsaw today. Hong kong police have violently tackled suspected protesters after thousands marched in the city in defiance of a ban. Just a warning that some viewers may find the following images upsetting. Footage shows police hitting people with batons and using pepper spray on a train in hong kongs underground metro. It follows a weekend of unrest which has seen thousands of demonstrators marching in the city and defying a protest ban. Yesterday police used rubber bullets and water canons to try and disperse protesters. Several people were arrested. A powerful storm threatening the bahamas and south eastern coast of the us has grown to category four, and is expected to strengthen even more. And its one of the biggest hurricanes weve seen in a long time, a long time, so it could be very devastating. Those are the main stories this morning. Its 8 3aam. Jane is here with our sport and starting with a very sad story today. Yes, its devastating, there hasnt been a death in motorsport since 201a and Charles Bianchi injapan. Motorsport is in mourning, following the death of a young driver during a support race for this weekends belgian grand prix. 22 year old french driver Anthoine Hubert died after a crash in a formula 2 race in spa. It happened on the second lap and, as the severity of the situation became clear, the race was susequently halted. A lot of the senior f1 drivers knew him. World champion Lewis Hamilton paid tribute on social media, writing Ferraris Charles Leclerc posted a picture of himself and fellow countryman Anthoine Hubert alongside each other from their karting days together. Charles leclerc will find todays formula one race at spa tough, where tributes are expected to be paid to antoine hubert. Leclerc is on pole and will be hoping to claim the first victory of his formula one career. Its his third pole position of the season in qualifying for the belgian grand prix. His ferrari team mate Sebastian Vettel lines up alongside him, with championship leader Lewis Hamilton third. Liverpool go into the International Break with four wins out of four in the premier league after they beat burnley 3 0. Manchester city went one better with a a 0 thrashing of brighton. Chelsea and Manchester United could only draw, though, as adam wild reports. Too soon to call the premier league a two horse race, but even in these early stages liverpool and Manchester City are just too good for the rest. They say in sport you make your own luck, liverpool were making just a little bit of burnley. Trent alexander arnolds cross somehow finding its way in. If that was fortunate, goals from sadio mane and Roberto Firmino were highly deserved. The success brings expectation sadio mane clearly angry at being substituted. But that drive for more is what drives liverpool forward. Hes an emotional guy were all emotional. Would he would do it exactly like this again . Probably not, but it is all 0k, really. I like that, we sort these things in a second, but obviously not outside in the public. Everybody needs to calm down, everything is fine, and we still like each other. If liverpool all like each other, Manchester City fans cannot help but like what they are seeing as well. It took them little over a minute to get things started against brighton. Manchester city have the lead on 71 seconds. Two goals from Sergio Aguero made the game safe. Four in total for city on a very comfortable afternoon. Things considerably less comfortable for their cross city rivals, Manchester United. Against southampton, things started brightly enough. Thats a brilliant goal. This was danieljames showing once again why so much is expected from him. The lead wouldnt last jannik verstergaards first goal for southampton. A draw then, and for some clearly it felt rather more. Chelsea, another premier League Winner of the past now looking to their future. Their youngest side in the modern era. And Tammy Abraham was justifying the faith in youth. This his second goal against sheffield united. But those from the steel city have within them an inner steel. One that saw them steal a point with an 89th minute equaliser. Chelsea have some growing to do. But the goal of the day perhaps came in leicesters win over bournemouth. Jamie vardy has done this kind of thing before. It never stops being spectacular. The north london derby is later today. In scotland its rangers celtic in the Old Firm Derby at lunchtime, but everyone else in the scottish premiership played yesterday. Motherwell put three goals past hibernian without reply. The opening effort from Sherwin Seedorf was the pick of the goals. Elsewhere, there were wins for aberdeen, livingston and kilmarnock. Hearts drew with hamilton. Its nowjust under three weeks until the Rugby World Cup gets under way in japan, and after a thrashing by england last weekend ireland have been stepping up there preparations with a win over wales in cardiff. Jacob stockdale went over twice in the first half for the irish, helping them to a 22 17 victory. The two sides will meet again next weekend in dublin for a final world cup warm up game. Wales name their world cup squad later today. Scotland recorded their first away win in 1a months as they beat georgia in their last world cup warm up match before theirfinal squad is announced. Rory hutchinson scored two tries on his first test start in a comfortable aa 10 victory. Hull kingston rovers beat catalans dragons 2a 6 in perpignan to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation from super league. With huddersfield beating hull on friday night, rovers needed to win to create a gap in the table from bottom side london, who play fellow strugglers leeds today. Tries from ryan shaw and one for Danny Maguire settled the contest. Vasly lomachenko beat britains Luke Campbell at londons 02 arena on points to add wbc lightweight title to his wba and wbo belts. Lomachenko whos regarded as one of the best pound for pound boxers was made to work hard for the thrilling win though. Campbell was knocked down in the 11th round by the ukrainian, who won by a unanimous decision. Rafa nadal has powered through to the fourth round of the us open. The world number two was clinical in seeing off south koreas chung hyeon in straight sets yesterday evening. Nadal will now face either john isner or 201a champion marin cilic in the next round. Defending champion naomi 0saka is also through, beating 15 year old coco gauff in straight sets 6 3, 6 0. Gauffs serving badly letting her down in the second set. And 0saka showed her compassion in victory afterwards, with some consoling words for the emotional american teenager. Shes got such a long career ahead of her, coco gauff, that she will learn from those established tennis players. I think those two will be the future of tennis, we will see some epic battles. Thanks, jane. We rely on satellites for everything from communication to surveillance, and now President Trump has launched a new pentagon command, dedicated to defending american interests beyond earth. The move comes as many other countries, like china and russia, step up their presence in space, with ambitious plans to explore the solar system. Maggie lieu is an astrophysicist from the European Space agency whos here to tell us what this means for the future in space. Thank you for coming along on sunday morning. This trump idea of a space force reminds me of Ronald Reagans star wars system back in the 1980s. What kind of power are we talking about . Its still a bit unclear what he wants to do with this space force but its clear that we as a world are taking Space Applications more and more importantly in our lives. We rely on gps navigation and ag Internet Networks and these are things we want to protect. Hugely valuable assets. Hugely, in 2007 china started this thing where they had these anti satellite missiles and it took out a satellite from the earth and imagine that happening again on art gps satellites. We would lose a lot of very valuable information like, for example, our planes rely on gps, imagine they we re planes rely on gps, imagine they were just planes rely on gps, imagine they werejust get planes rely on gps, imagine they were just get lost and they dont know where they are going, that would be disastrous. It would be the way for a hostile power to disable your defences by taking out the satellite because you mention star wars, that was about shooting down missiles, i dont know if donald trump has ideas of shooting down these but if you can put stuff in space you need to protect it. Absolutely and this year we have been seeing Cyber Attacks on military satellites and these are things we should be worried about, people hacking in and generating fa ke people hacking in and generating fake gps data, that would affect our planes and navigation systems. And the russians and chinese will also be seeking to protect their assets. Ifind it be seeking to protect their assets. I find it fascinating be seeking to protect their assets. Ifind it fascinating how be seeking to protect their assets. I find it fascinating how you determine territory in space. Who decides where your satellite can go, how you navigate with other countries because there are no clear boundaries. Space is large enough that at the moment there is not that much crashing or collisions, but also many countries have signed what we call the outer space treaty which says that no one can own any part of space and it should be explored for peaceful purposes. There is a lot of debris out there as well. There is, and that the European Space agency we have a Space Debris Office to monitor these big chunks of metal floating around in case any chunk flies into our space telescopes for our International Space station, they can do manoeuvres to avoid the biggest chunks. When you say you track them, can you put a number on how many are up there . Its so, so many, it would be millions because there are big chunks but also particles and these are equally as dangerous because they are travelling at such high speeds, they can do serious damage. There is a fair degree of cooperation especially around the International Space station, can we look positively at that as a model for how Different Countries might cooperate . I think so because space is very expensive and no country alone can do what we have done with the International Space station, it was a group effort, the European Space agency, japanese and americans and if they were to go it alone they would have had to reduce that to a much smaller scale so we do benefit from working together. Its fascinating and i guess the drones you hear about controlled bite satellites, flying a drone from arizona over whatever, its incredible. Thank you for coming in. Thank you for having me. Roger is off to read the news for andrew marr, and do his duties there. Have a lovely day, rachel. Ben, how is the weather looking . Its feeling quite cool today which is apt given this is the first day of autumn, a fair bit of sunshine. With the sunshine we also have some showers in the forecast, cool air ushered in behind this band of cloud with rain forjust ushered in behind this band of cloud with rain for just about all of us yesterday, today some speckled cloud comes down from the north west, shower workloads being brought in on a cool breeze, tapping into cooler airthan we a cool breeze, tapping into cooler air than we have been used to so if you are heading out in the next hour orso, you are heading out in the next hour or so, you can you are heading out in the next hour or so, you can expect showers you are heading out in the next hour or so, you can expect showers across scotla nd or so, you can expect showers across scotland and these are likely to be heavy and thundery, may be some hail and quitea heavy and thundery, may be some hail and quite a cool morning, 12 degrees for aberdeen and glasgow, Northern Ireland seeing showers and sunshine, some showers in Northern England and wales, there will be one or two showers but across southern wales and east anglia, hear a lot of dry weather and sunshine. As we go through the day we continue to see showers across scotland, some getting into the midlands and east anglia, more dry weather towards the south, especially the south west but remember last sunday we got to 33 degrees, this sunday highs of 20 and in the afternoon Northern Ireland might see cloud and rain working east. Tonight though showers work into scotland and Northern England, cloud tending to break up, there will be a long clear spells across the uk and for many it will be a chilly night, towns and cities six and 7 degrees, cooler in the countryside but milder in the west with more cloud and tomorrow we will generally see things cloud over, so some sunshine to start across eastern scotland and england and wales but we will see increasing cloud, some drizzle for coastal hills, more general rain for Northern Ireland although eastern scotla nd Northern Ireland although eastern scotland might get some sunshine through the day, temperatures at 17 or 20 degrees but it might feel milder than today then for the rest of the way, rain at times but not all the time and after that milder interlude on monday and tuesday it turns cooler again in the middle of the week. I will hand you back to rachel. It is the start of autumn, a lot of people love this time of year, i was blackberry picking yesterday. Blackberry and apple start is amazing. Are you making it . Anything that makes you feel homely and comforted, that will do it, but are we seeing and comforted, that will do it, but are we seeing any and comforted, that will do it, but are we seeing any long term nice weather . Its hard to talk about the weather beyond our way, no sign of anything especially warm returning, that outlook takes us through the next week but we can get spells of warmth in september and october so we will keep an eye on that, i suspect a bit of warmth is not done with us yet. So, as weve been reporting today, events are taking place to mark 80 years since hitlers invasion of poland. Its also eight decades since britain began evacuating 1. 5 Million People most of them children from cities to the countryside. Hannah gray has been speaking to some of those wartime evacuees. The sun in the sands, where i first had my alcoholic drink at the age of ten. The age of ten . A glass of cider. Roger is 91. Hes brought his granddaughter to the village he was evacuated to 80 years ago. Ten years old, nearly 11 and of course i was evacuated to the beautiful village of lamberhurst. Can you remember the date that you got evacuated . Yes, friday the 1st of september 1939. This building here is the former butchers shop where i stayed for the first five months. Roger was one of 1. 5 Million People evacuated at the outbreak of world war ii. Archive narrator so its goodbye to the cities and danger areas. Labelled and loaded and not forgetting their gas masks, the children head for the special train, and theyre not worrying, theyre off on a holiday. How were you feeling . Were you afraid . No, it was great, we loved it because the battle for britain was being fought over us, the skies full of vapour trails, planes coming down in flames, parachutists coming down, we thought it was quite exciting. And this was the kitchen. Stone floor. Reg and mary remember it vividly too. They were only nine. We stayed in london through the blitz and then we went to, i think, north devon then, and my mum took seven children because the youngest was a baby in arms, so we were all separated. We took condensed milk, a big bar of cadburys chocolate but im afraid that got eaten before we got to paddington station so we got to the village and then youre in front of all these people standing there, you get picked out like prize cattle. Really did. The good looking ones, in the end, and this other boy from paddington who ive never seen sense, we was the last two. I remember the children being very nasty to us, calling us bomb dodgers and go back to where you live and all that. Later on every evacuee wants to run away. I had a mate, a fellow i knew up at the recreation club, he run away three times. The police took him back. And a word of advice for younger generations. Not to take everything for granted because you never know if war breaks out and the next one would be. God knows, you know. But i always tell people, id never die on a monday. Its pension day. Hannah gray, bbc news. Were joined now by one of those who was evacuated, pat fawcett. Thank you so much and you have brought some of the things you took on that journey with brought some of the things you took on thatjourney with you, including old tired here. How important was he to you as you are embarking on this journey . He was given to me by my dad so ease always been important. I had him when i was very small and we we re had him when i was very small and we were being evacuated and ted had to come. You were evacuated twice, once in the initial movement of children and families and at that stage it was with your milder and sister. Mother. There was a mother and baby scheme, small children and babies could be evacuated together so i went with my mother and sister. My father was away in the navy, he had been called back on reserve, he was in the submarines. Looking back at some of the pictures, seeing the faces of these children, you think they were so small, you had no idea what was going on, how old were you and how much did you understand . was seven and it was difficult, i wasnt sure what war meant, i knew it meant fighting but we were told its a great adventure and it will all be over by christmas, which it wasnt. Its worth showing our viewers a couple of other things. This wasnt your nametag, this was your husbands. Yes and the name was spelt wrongly so his mother told the people in the school and they rewrote the label that he wore but she kept that one and we found it many years later. And the gas masks that you were all packed up with, so these you took with you as you went on your journey. These you took with you as you went on yourjourney. Yes, its very old and the rubber has perished. Thats the kind of gas mask that children of my age and adults hard. But my sister had a mickey mouse gas mask. Micky mouse . Yes, they called it mickey mouse because they thought it would appeal to the smaller children because when they breathe in and out it made the thing on the front wobble and blow a raspberry but the children didnt really like it. imagine they were uncomfortable to wear. Very claustrophobic. You were evacuated a second time when the situation in london became more risky, and from what we heard on the film we played, a number of children tried to run away, not a replacement was happy but you did form a bond with your family in wales. We went to bridgend in wales, i stayed with the Phillips Family and im still in touch with them although we havent spoken recently. What was your life like they are, how different from london . Very different, there were fields to run and play in, wejust used to run free and have fun in the fields and down by the river and it wasnt very far from the seaside although we werent allowed to go on the beach, and i had a good evacuation. Some people didnt. I guess you heard stories of people who werent happy. I belong to the British Evacuees Association and we a lwa ys British Evacuees Association and we always wear our labels and when we have get togethers we hear some horrific stories. I imagine if you tried to do that now with children, the safeguarding processes in place. It wouldnt be allowed. Did you feel a sense of excitement or did the fear of war a sense of excitement or did the fearof warand a sense of excitement or did the fear of war and the International Situation play on your mind . fear of war and the International Situation play on your mind . I knew what was dangerous, obviously, and because my father was in the navy, he was in submarines so i knew it was a dangerous time but as children you dont realise how dangerous. Its a big adventure. Thank you so much for coming in, its a privilege to talk to you and remember those times, and thank you for bringing old tired as well. He looks like he has survived a few ordeals so our stint on the sofa he should manage. That is it from me today. Dan and louise will be back tomorrow from 6am.
