Leader and vocal critic of the Prime Ministers approach to Brexit Ruth Davidson resigns from fight citing and personal reasons. Counsellors and personal reasons. Counsellors and afight and personal reasons. Counsellors and a fight citing professional and personal reasons. Counsellors in england when that funding uncertainty means that some Vital Services for the elderly and disabled are at risk. And mixed fortu nes disabled are at risk. And mixed fortunes for the english clubs in the Champions League, group stage draw. Plans to soup in bottom of the five weeks in the to brexit start today with conservative mps forcing hostility to the mover. The former justice secretary has warned that time is running out for mps trying to prevent the uk leaving the European Union without a deal and that this coming week may be their only opportunity. The government, though, called it phoney and accused mps of trying to overturn brexit. Heres our political editor. Tempers hot, nerves a member of the government and tory mp in cheltenham defending himself to protesters, but not entirely the governments approach. I have made my position clear, ive spoken to the chief whip about it. Time is short but within days, swathes of mps will try to remove the possibility that Boris Johnson could take us out of the eu without a deal. With even Senior Tories on site, they will try to change the law. It may well be that next week is the only opportunity. Im afraid it does look as if our options have now narrowed, and if parliament is going to assert some control, and say, ok, if we leave with no deal, but that has to happen with the consent of parliament, then that would suggest that we need to move sooner rather than later. Is this the moment when polite resistance will become more aggressive action . Well, i hope it will continue to be polite, but i also think it is going to need to be robust. Those who fear the possible turmoil of leaving without a deal seem more determined now, after the Prime Minister caused this kind of outrage by cutting the number of days in the commons mps have to scrutinise whats going on. The official line . Totally routine for parliament to have a breather, to be prorogued, for that amount of time. There is going to be lots of time to debate before 31st october, parliament will be sitting then and will be able to have whatever motions it wants. I think the outrage is phony. One peer in the government quit in protest, and maybe the defence secretary gave the game away. He certainly learned that even at a summit in finland, there are microphones everywhere. When you prorogued the parliament. Clearly, more than it is . Those remarks got a less friendly welcome from no 10, who said later he misspoke. To clip borisjohnsons wings, to outlaw no deal, the snp and others need to Work Together withJeremy Corbyn to get the numbers for a majority next week. What we are going to do is to try to politically stop him on tuesday with parliamentary process, in order to legislate to prevent a no deal brexit, and also to try and prevent him shutting down parliament during this utterly crucial period. The imprecations for this country are very, very serious. So, just weeks into office, the new Prime Minister is up against protests around the country, and many mps in parliament are determined to try and defeat him next week. When they come to vote, the numbers might be achingly tight. But when it comes to brexit, as ever, the difference of opinion is fast indeed. List i just this further with Jessica Parker at westminster. What is your best guess, just got as to what those opposed to no deal will try to do when i get back to Parliament Next Week . Welcome we dont have to guess too much, it looks like opposition parties who are opposed to no deal will certainly try to put forward some kind of legislation, possibly by using an mechanism around an emergency debate in order to try and seize control of the parliamentary agenda. I think a lot of them, though, being a little bit tight lipped at the moment as to exactly what their plans are, what this bill will look like and exactly what it will say, because they dont wa nt to what it will say, because they dont want to give the game away because this is a game of strategy and counter strategy where they have one set of mps trying to stop a new deal brexit and then you have downing street in the government saying that will undermine their negotiating strategy, because the context here is important. Yes, borisjohnson us that he is prepared to take the uk out of the eu on october 31 without a deal if that is necessary, if an agreement cannot be reached but his preference is to reach an agreement with brussels weather that can happen, well a lot of people are pretty sceptical because of course borisjohnson pretty sceptical because of course Boris Johnson wanted pretty sceptical because of course borisjohnson wanted to remove that controversial measure in the Withdrawal Agreement come because youre the republic of ireland porter remains free and frictionless in brussels not showing much of an indication or inclination towards removing it saying the uk needs to come up with a strong realistic alternative proposals. This notion of mps taking control of the agenda, say they did, what then are they looking to do . Is this about putting something in front of parliament that would then force the Prime Minister to behave differently from the way he would like to . We would have to wait for the wording of the bill, but a lot of the discussion is about perhaps looking to do something similar to what they did earlier in the air with theresa may which was essentially try and mandate the Prime Minister to go off to brussels to seek an extension to article 50 and so to delay brexit. With theresa may that effort was successful although she was kind of things were in the motions already in terms of she was going to seek a delay to break separate mps did mandate her to do that with the bill and piece of legislation, interestingly when youre looking at the numbers on that effort it passed the numbers on that effort it passed the house of commons by one vote. Laura was just referring her peace a moment ago to the fact that this could be an incredibly tight to vote and the evidence from the past would suggest that she is absolutely right, could be looking at very close numbers and thats one of the reasons that tensions are running so high and high stakes with it being difficult in the moment to reject the results. Where the possibilities ofa the results. Where the possibilities of a vote . That was talked about extensively over the summer on whether mps would try to no confidence borisjohnson whether mps would try to no confidence Boris Johnson and install some kind of caretaker Prime Minister who would then go off to brussels and say, hey, look can we have an extension will be sort this out and decide what to do next . That kind of started to look less likely when labour came out and said well if youre going to have a caretaker Prime Minister and has got to be Jeremy Corbyn and that proved to be unacceptable in certain quarters amongst those who wanted to stop they know deal brags that, so that has been put on the back burner it seems with the idea of legislation instead coming to the fore but nobody, i think, instead coming to the fore but nobody, ithink, is ruling instead coming to the fore but nobody, i think, is ruling out trying to put forward a no confidence vote but i think thats possibly come at the moment being seen as a second possibility where the first effort will be around this idea of legislation to try and make borisjohnson seek an extension. Jessica parker there at westminster. Several legal moves up launched against the move to suspend parliament to one of them was heard in scotlandox court of sessions today, or Legal Correspondent clive took us there there. The snp mp joanna cherry, just of the qc, along with 74 joanna cherry, just of the qc, along with 7a other parliamentarians, another qc did not mince his words. Do not live in absolutist state. We do not live in a totalitarian state. We live in a state which is limited by the rule of law. Mr oneill went on to say that it was unlawful and unconstitutional for the government to suspend parliament and he requested in order to stop that suspension, also requesting another order that will prevent any minister from advising the queen in the future to make a new similar order to prorogue parliament. Then in a historical and constitutional lecture almost said that the government were bound by the 1689 claim of rights, that is the equivalent of the 1689 bill of rights, and that was the document that really curtailed the power of monarchs and made it clear they could not override the wishes of parliament. It was interesting what mr oneill said, he quoted directly from the bill of rights and he said the fundamental constitutional end of the kingdom is one of a legal, limited monarchy in which the regal power may not be exercised in violation of the laws, liberties of the kingdom and was constitution may not be altered into an arbitrary of a despotic power by advice of evil and wicked counsellors. He then went on to, and instead i hesitate to draw parallels to what happened yesterday with what happened in the 17th century, but sometimes, my lord, it is to what happened yesterday with what happened in the 17th century, but sometimes, my lord, it is too tempting. He was really not beating around the bush in terms of what he considered to be the wrongdoing of yesterdays announcement. For the government the case was really pretty straightforward. It told them that the suspension was a legitimate course of action and have used many times, a law all of the queen to do this and it would be unlawful for the courts to interfere. Essentially what he was saying was look, these are political matters and the courts should simply back off, those of the arguments and we would get the ruling tomorrow morning. With Parliament Said to be suspended next month, how can the opposition toa next month, how can the opposition to a no deal brexit stop such an outcome happening . With me, formal political adviser to ever read and also im joined by a webcam by the chief executive of the cross Party Think Tank demoss, welcome to both of you. Lets pick up or what we we re of you. Lets pick up or what we were talking toJessica Parker about a moment ago, she was talking about a moment ago, she was talking about a legislative route, is that what you think is the most likely here . Yes, i think it is. We seen it happen before with the cooper push a few months ago to try and stop or extend the process, and that happens, i think in three orfour days and so it can be done and i think given that the no confidence in my view is more of a Nuclear Option mps to have to try and find a mechanism in parliament and in a much more constrained timetable now, to try and find a way of stopping a no deal exit. The problem is, eve ryo ne no deal exit. The problem is, everyone is coming from a different starting point, some people who want no brexit and some people want a second referendum and some want to leave but with a deal. The calculations on the government side is that the opposition is very divided and thats why its now time to move. Is that your reading of the most likely events of the course of next week will be . I think it is. Its clear the government hugely raise the stakes about the next few days of parliamentary time with this move. I guess what they may have held off is finding a way to unify the opposition. Because for once, after three years of wrangling and division and debate and dissent between the live remainers and liberal democrats and snp, its possible that this kind of crystallizing of the conflict between the leavers and government or remainders or soft brexiteers outside of the governmentjust kind of sharpens everyones minds. I dont know. The evidence of the last three years is that this kind of ragtag bunch of people are incapable of unifying number to single course of unifying number to single course of action but if anything can make them unify is what the government has done by pulling this and pressing the reset button. But what you are looking towards the end is getting a legislative mechanism past the first hurdle, if you like, but that than have got to put something in front of parliament which requires the Prime Minister to act ina certain requires the Prime Minister to act in a certain way, and the idea that they are going to agree on that is specific wording, thats quite a big ask. Its a huge ask, but theres been rumours of course in number ten threatening they might just been rumours of course in number ten threatening they mightjust ignore even a piece of legislation that would require them to ask for an extension, that they might block a bill in the house of lords by appointing a few hundred hard brexiteer peers and lake doctor farage to buy him off. What is clear is the message from number ten as theyre willing to go to the mattress for brexit and being able to say that, like we will be radical and almost anything we will do no matter whether its legal or sensible, that helps and being able to tell their story that they are the good guys against this slightly tedious establishment who have found themselves forced into talking about process and procedure and using these tedious words. They dont mind if they have to go crazy, just a question of is actually enough . They have the votes . Thats the point, number ten can always turn around of the face of whatever happens here and say look, we are on the side of the referendum result. |j and say look, we are on the side of the referendum result. I think everybody is trying to be the saviour of democracy here and it depends on how you define that. Thats the government position, he is not blameless in this, parliament has not agreed with anything and thats a very much the message and the mps are saying this was about taking things back control for the parliament wire wheat suspending it before this crucial date . I think that conflict will continue, but i think the other key thing is that actually went to the eu think about this . Mps could well votes to extend, but to what purpose . I think people in the eu are very frustrated because they want to know what on earth is it that will pass through the uk house of commons, where is that parliamentary sweet spot . No one is going to know that and then just equally by extending for a few months we will say what for . It may make sense to rely on the uk here, but its just a conversation we are having by ourselves. That has not been tested yet. Are you of the mind that its being exposed back a little . Pushed back in a sense of days. Cannot be pushed back for a long. They have only got days to do anything, i think that will happen will not be the first point of call andi will not be the first point of call and i think the numbers are, i think it will focus minds a lot more. There were people that will have acted, ina there were people that will have acted, in a few weeks time, thinking they will have to act much sooner and again thats not risk because by all accounts they could as well lead to an election and if you have that then you dont have a 14 you have that then you dont have a 1a days to find a new government, the government could try and schedule an election for after the end of october which means that you leave the eu by default anyway. Im not sure how that will really help. When we come back to you on that, mckenzie, not on no confidence but general election. Its hard to see how election would solve these problems, you can make a case to the European Union, is the one where they might grant an extension in order to allow the general election and see if you can come back with the different parliaments, believers are completely right to say there is are completely right to say there is a mandate to leave the European Union but theres also a democratic mandate for the parliament and the people chose both those things. Might the general election resolve that . It might commit might leap with another Hung Parliament but the problem is, if you did trigger a general election its possible it might call it after brexit has happened and the possibility is what you need to do is get what people are calling a government of National Unity and a caretaker Prime Minister who consented timetable for a general election for the constitutional mechanism for doing thatis constitutional mechanism for doing that is very high and it does not really set out a process of how to do it in detail, but also the hyper partisan tribal system of politics we have in this country, for those mps who have built their entire political identity around the membership of the party, its possible that the way herjohnson is behaving might enable people to see it differently and break out of their trouble divides, so they National Identity remains the least possible option out of these scenarios. A brief final work to you both, have either of you seen any sign of movement by the eu . Polly, to your first. No it seemed to me that the relatively from the words we re that the relatively from the words were basically a way of trying to avoid blame if it does fall to pieces so they can be seen as being completely out of it. There is fundamentally huge harm to the eu, the system and if the uk is allowed to use it as a cushion. Similarly i think the mood music does seem better but ultimately the eu are looking to us to provide alternatives options for the Northern Ireland border and im not seeing much of that or at least the government are hiding very well, so until that is resolved i dont think there will be much change. Thank you both very much. Well find out how this story and others, assuming there are room for them are covered in tomorrows front pages this evening in the papers committed to gastro me tonight our editor of the londoner and the chief political corresponded for the telegraph. Stay with politics, Ruth Davidson has resigned as leader of the conservatives or drink borisjohnson to strike eight Brexit Agreement before the end of october, shes been a vocal critic of the Prime Minister approached brexit but that her decision to step down was primarily for personal reasons after she became a mother last year. Some flash photography in this report from sarah smith. Anyone who had come to hear Ruth Davidson denounce borisjohnson and his brexit policy was in the wrong place today. She admits they dont entirely agree. But she believes he is trying to avoid a no deal exit. I stared him right in the eye, i asked him outright, i need to know, are you actually trying to get a deal or not . And he categorically assured me that he was. I know that what would help further would be for people who want to avoid a no deal to come out and say that if a deal is brought back to parliament, that they would back it, in the way that they have failed to do three times already. Let the eu know you will pass a new deal, she urged like minded mps, while explaining the genuine personal reasons why as a new mum, she is stepping down. I have to be honest, where the idea of getting on the roads to fight two elections in 20 months would once have fired me up, the threat of spending hundreds of hours away from my home and family now fills me with dread. And that is no way to lead. Ruth davidson played a large part in helping to elect 13 scottish tory mps at the last election, up from just one, in keeping the conservatives in power. In the current political turmoil there is a chance the conservatives might soon find themselves trying to defend newly won seats like berwickshire and selkirk without their greatest electoral asset at the helm. They might even have to fight an election before theyve chosen a new leader. She has given us a very good platform, but i am not lacking in ambition for the scottish conservative party, i believe there is more to do, more mps that we can elect to. His constituents say they will miss her. I thought she did a lot for the conservatives because they had nothing here at all. Her motives for stepping down, still a topic of debate. I think that she was going to stand down anyway because of her commitment with the baby and so on. I dont think she gets on with boris, i dont think she agrees with him, but who does . Whether or not they get on, the Prime Minister will be wondering if he has lost an electoral asset or got rid of a thorn in his side. Sarah smith, bbc news, melrose. Councils in england are warning they will have to start ending contracts which provide vital care for older and disabled people within weeks, unless they get more certainty over how much money they will get from government next year. Nearly two and a half billion pounds worth of short term grants are due to end in 2020 and local authorities dont know if they will be replaced. Figures released by the organisation representing county councils show on average they represent more than a third of the Money Councils get from central government. Heres our social affairs correspondent, alison holt another person arrives at Harrogate Hospital in need of Urgent Medical help. To meet these constant pressures, staff have to do all they can to get other patients who are ready to leave back home quickly and safely. The North Yorkshire county council patients waiting to go home with four calls per day to support them. Teams like this help that happen. It is vital work funded by short Term Government money given to North Yorkshire county council, but it runs out in march and they dont know what happens next. We want to be able to think about what workforce we need to cope with the current strain on the Adult Social Care and Health Services and at the moment that is proving difficulty given that funding will finish, and we have. As of the 31st of march we have invested in a number of additional rows that have not been able to employee as of that period of time. Another scheme at risk in the county has helped 65 year old Margaret Miller regain her independence and mobility after a major cancer operation. She had feared she would end up in a care home. They were the ones that saw me in my worst possible state, and the support and everything was second to none. And im here in my own home, and that is the biggest thing. The uncertainty that councils in england, including North Yorkshire, are facing over whether or not these short Term Government grants will continue to pay for Vital Care Services is a sign ofjust how hand to mouth local Authority Funding has become. In Councils Like this, short Term Government grants represent nearly 20 of the money they spend on supporting older and disabled people. It means difficult discussions are already taking place between those in charge of running finances and care services. 3a million including £28 million Better Care Fund, what do we do to plan for different scenarios . We have to give notice to some of our contracts with the voluntary sector and the independent care providers. Unless they are told the grants will be renewed soon, they will begin winding some contracts down within weeks. Im deeply worried, as every treasurer will be across the country. We are not sure what plans to make so we have to come up with different scenarios and plan for the money being there or not being there. It is a fifth of our budget, it is lots of peoples jobs but crucially it is their lives. The government says it has put extra money into providing care for people in communities across england, and further funding will be looked at in next weeks spending review. Alison holt, bbc news. Joining me now is David Williams who is chairman elect of the county Councils Network and leader of hertfordshire county council. David, good evening. Just to give us a sense of the picture around the country, we heard there they counsel where a fifth of its spending its reliance on these kinds of short term grants, how typical is that . It is very typical, if you look at the complete picture around the country government provides 6. 9 billion to local councils of whatever sort, and the number that allison used of 2. 4 million is the amount thatis used of 2. 4 million is the amount that is subject to these temporary gra nts that is subject to these temporary grants the Better Care Fund to social care grant, and also the winter pressures grants. Those three sources of Funding Amount to £2. 4 billion in the come to an end at the end of march next year. This point you dont know what lies beyond that . The priority here is to call on the chancellor of the exchequer to confirm all social care including those temporary grants is rolled over into the next financial year. But then of course the system does not stand still and we estimate that there is a further 650 Million Pounds of pressure right across the system that we are going to experience next year so thats inflation, thats more demand and we are asking government to fully fund that as well. Has it always been like this that theres been an element of the spending that you have available that does not come around automatically and you have to hope it will happen again this is only happen the last few years or so, its the government response to a system that we all know needs com plete a system that we all know needs complete reform its only when the permanent government funding has transposed in the temporary grants that have been made available for a three year period year period. Right, what he might be able to hear here is, well we know its going to be aired, what would you say . He talked about the priorities we have heard about the National Health service heard about police and heard about education as well. Ive also wa nted about education as well. Ive also wanted him to commit to the support to local councils to deliver social ca re to local councils to deliver social care and so i want to see that right of their agenda they make the spending round announcement next wednesday. Hes now the chancellor of the act are but until april 2018 he was the secretary of state so he does know this and he knows the challenges and indeed he was an excellent secretary of state so i sincerely hope that he will be able to commit to rolling over this funding and providing the additional funding and providing the additional funding going into the government would say that it has already put more money into social care. And most of that money is the temporary grants that we talked about. The temporary grants that have come to an end in march of next year. And you had to do this in an earlier interview. Almost any individual from earlier interview. Almost any individualfrom the main parties, there was kind of go down this road, that were getting close now to the where we cannot keep pushing this down the road and at some point, a Bigger Picture solution for funding aduu Bigger Picture solution for funding Adult Social Care has got to come forward. Absolutely, this is a key priority for the government and the Prime Minister has set out that it is one of his priorities as well to tackle this issue of social care funding which is been kicked down the road. A number of aspects, in particular, the terrible situation that some families face in terms of having to bear catastrophic care costs we must find a better way to address that we need to find a way to address more resources into the system as well. You may be familiar with the work of a few years ago where they were trying to tap into an unlimited amount of wealth that people had built up in the properties. Other people have spoken about national insurance. Of the key thing here is to keep it fair, we do not want intergenerational challenges. We do not want younger people in our population necessarily having to fund this demand rising out of largely elderly residents stop by thank you for your time. Brazil has banned setting fires to clear land for 60 days in response to a massive increase in the number of fires in the amazon rainforest. The decree was signed by president jair bolsonaro, who has faced criticism at home and abroad for failing to protect the rainforest. A leading brazilian environmentalist has warned that the worst of the fire is yet to come. South american countries will meet next week to discuss the crisis. A word then first by this decree. How will it be said of enforce . Enforced . For the next few days, the force here in brazil allows controlled fires and when they want to renew pasture for a new breeding cycle, it is about legal fires. This is another effort from the government and international and internal pressure to reduce the area tackled by the blazes in the Amazon Region. The worst is yet to come, why . This prominent forestry expert says earlier this week that the fire season in the amazon could still intensify and that is because the fires have been seen over the past weeks for if you would actually by trees chopped down in april, may and june, so the areas deforested in july and august and government Monitoring System shows a search in the destruction and that has yet to be torched. South american countries are meeting next week to discuss the crisis. How willing is the brazilian president to listen to those neighbours on the south American Continent because he was not impressed by the g7 observations in recent times. Exactly. But yesterday, president bolsonaro met with the chilean president and he was at the g7 summit last week and so after the meeting, he repeated what bolsonaro has been saying about the amazon saying that it is important and that brazil maintains its sovereignty over the region. So he said he will be open to do that, they would say the meeting went quite well. A final word about the debate and brazil, if you watch the television and read the newspapers, how much is this being discussed and debated . It has been all over the place. I was actually in the Amazon Region last week and we are talking about people in the region and the opinions vary a lot. Some people say that this actually happens every yearin that this actually happens every year in brazil. Its good that people are not paying attention to this problem and that we need to solve it right away, but some people on the other hand ask why the International Community Pay Attention to it right now and by some people agree with president bossa naro that may be some of it is about politics and that they may wa nt to about politics and that they may want to harm the president s image. The number of migrants trying to reach the uk across the channel by boat is growing fast more than 200 have been intercepted in the past week alone. This afternoon the home secretary, priti patel, held talks with her french counterpart in paris to discuss the crisis. More than a thousand people have made the journey by boat so far this year. But many more are still reaching the uk through ports. Our europe correspondent gavin lee has sent this repor from gravelines, on the north coast of france welcome to gravelines a pictu re postca rd french coastal town by day, its harbour is now a magnet for migrants at night. Jean pierre shows me where his £7,000 motorboat was moored. All thats left is a severed rope. He says his boat was stolen and discovered in british waters with eight migrants on board. The vessel is still in the hands of uk authorities. Translation we are not rich people. We cant afford to buy a new boat every month because migrants are stealing them. It is sad for those people, but what about us . So im telling you, i wont let it happen again. I will defend myself the best i can. I wont let my boat be stolen again. A Community Night patrol has been set up by the boat owners, who say they live in fear of the migrants, who are searching the area each night. The vessels are all now chained in place. Some are alarmed. Alarm goes off. This man offers to show me what its like attempting to cross the channel. Here in the middle of the channel, you already get a sense of how strong the current is and its relatively calm today. And you can see why this is called one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with the freight traffic going across, the ferries from dover to calais. Now, the migrants are taking smaller boats than this to make the journey and the boat owners here say that its far too dangerous and lives are massively at risk. Its lorries, though, thats still the favourite option for those trying to stow away without money. Outside a disused gym in dunkirk, more than 1,000 people bide their time between attempts. Some here tell us theyve paid smugglers around £3,000 to organise a boat crossing. Ayearago, migrants illegally crossing by boat seemed a rare occurrence. Now its happening here every week. A former minister warns mps that next week may be their only chance to challenge a no deal brexit. Citing professional and personal reasons and because im Boris Johnson to get a deal with the eu. Councils in england war and funding uncertainty mean some Vital Services for the elderly and disabled are at risk. The Usjustice Department says it will not prosecute former fbi Directorjames Comey after an internal investigation concluded that he leaked informatin to the media. In a report, released today, mr comey was criticised for his handling of memos that detailed his interactions with president trump. Our washington correspondent, chris bucker has the backround and reaction to the story. Famously fired by donald trump as director of the fbi and given some difference and sometimes contradictory reasons as to why he did so but he did share details of a memo with a friend and in that memo, he kept details of conversations he had with the president and he wanted his friend to share them with a reporter of the new york times. In those memos, he revealed that the president try to pressure the fbi to dropping investigation. General flynn went on to admit he was misleading the white house and pleading guilty to federal agents about contacts he had with russian officials. And with the Inspector General settings inside Thejustice Department is that they believe that james comey was trying to pressure the department ofjustice to launch its own investigation into the conversations that he had with the president and sync it was extremely critical. He said it was very Sensitive Information and by leaking it, he set a bad and dangerous example. There has been a response james comey who is try to present themselves as a defender of the values of the fbi, he said on twitter that those who claimed he would go to jail have been proven wrong and he asked people to claim. Begins with the phrase that james comey is a proven liar and he goes on to talk about him than simply leaking information to the press and blatant violation of fbi policies and asa blatant violation of fbi policies and as a result of that says the nation was forced to endure the baseless, politically motivated two year witchhunt and concludes that he disgraced himself and his office to further a personal political agenda and this report further confirms that fact. Researchers have discovered the almost complete, nearly 4 million year old skull, of an early human like ape in ethiopia. The find raises doubts about ideas, of how the first humans evolved from apes. Palab ghosh has the details. In africa, in the distant past, advanced ape like creatures evolved into the first humans. For decades, scientists believed that this specimen, nicknamed lucy, was the ape like ancestor to the first true humans. But a dig in the afar region of ethiopia found this object, which challenged that view. When cleaned up, it turned out to be a near complete skull of an ancestor of lucy, called anamensis. Using computerised scans, researchers built up this face of what anamensis actually looked like. Just putting a face and the whole anatomy to a species that we knew basically nothing about, or that we knew very little about. That means we can start making comparisons with other species, and then we can try to understand the revolutionary relationships. Very little was known about anamensis until now. These are replicas of bone fragments from anamensis. Weve got jaw bones, arm bones and a leg bone. Until now, this was all we had not enough to know very much about it but the discovery of a nearly complete skull has transformed our understanding, notjust of this species, but how the first humans evolved from these advanced ape like creatures. An analysis published in the journal nature shows that, rather than being lucys ancestor, the two species coexisted for at least 100,000 years. This suggests that lucys kind is probably a branch of anamensis, and, if thats the case, other species of advanced apes living at the time might also have their own branches. Researchers say that this means there are now many more contenders, as well as lucy, to lay claim to be the ancestor to the very first humans to have walked the earth. Across england and wales, the best of the sunshine and warmth across the east anglia and the southeast. But most of england and wales and will remain dry into the night, but in Northern Ireland and scotla nd night, but in Northern Ireland and scotland we have some more rain to come in the western parts and not much rain for eastern scotland. The south westerly breeze, theres going to be warmer than last night, temperature should remain in double figures. Tomorrow we have rain on and off across Northern Ireland with some rain times across much of scotla nd some rain times across much of scotland which will turn heavy across southwest and western parts of scotla nd across southwest and western parts of scotland with some rain into the northwest, threatening north wales and in the rest of england or wales it is likely to be dry and warm in the sunshine of south westerly winds with temperatures perhaps 25 or 26 degrees. For the northwest it is cooler and wetter, if that weather front coming in that is focusing on the rental still be there overnight saturday and continuing to add up, particularly on the hills of Northern Ireland with the obese in inches of rain and perhaps more of that over the high ground in central and western parts of scotland. It may bring some localised flooding but it clears winter Northern Ireland on saturday morning in the beget sunshine and showers, it lingers longer and then pushes its way into england and wales. But in east anglia, southeast of england, likely to be dry, still warm and quite a contrast with the rest of the uk. The contrast out of the side of that weather front, theyll be much rain on that as it pushes into eastern areas on saturday evening and then we are all open to the northwesterly wind and i will bring us northwesterly wind and i will bring us down with cooler fresher air and for the first day of september the 1st, a autumn, some heavy and sundry, if showers getting in the way for temperatures, temperatures going up to 19 degrees but i think the mid teens it is going to be a bit typical. Hello, im nuala mcgovern, this is outside source. The political fall out continues after the british governments decision to suspend parliament. Two separate legal challenges are launched to try to stop the suspension. Protests on the streets and opposition plans for mps to take action all dismissed by a senior minister as fake.
