Holiday monday on record. Coming up in the sport later in the hour on bbc news reflecting one of the great test innings, as ben stokes keeps england alive in the ashes. Good afternoon. World leaders gathered at the g7 summit in biarritz in the south of france, have agreed to release more than £16 million to help tackle huge fires in the amazon rainforest. The french president said most of the money would be used to fund aircraft to help put out the flames, with the rest providing technical support. Earlier, borisjohnson pledged £10 million to help restore lost habitat. Our Diplomatic CorrespondentJames Landale reports. The fires raging across the amazon, devastating thousands of acres of rainforest, prompting global outrage and now, potentially, global action. Borisjohnson and his team arrived at the summit to join other World Leaders to discuss what can be done. This morning the Prime Minister promised brazil £10 million to help reforest affected areas in the months to come. Order. Order boris, order around the table, some g7 leaders and others from around the world gathering to discuss common plan. The french president promising technical and financial help to stop the fires and protect the forests. But note this, donald trump was not there. We have a big emergency in the amazon. Remember, they are the lungs of the world, so we have to help brazil and the other amazonic countries to control these fires. And thats something that has been discussed and we have already agreed that we will put a fund and we are in contact with all of the amazonic countries to bring help now. Basically, planes to get rid of the fires. But if the leaders here agreed that more should be done to help countries in the amazon, there was less agreement on what trade penalties they might face if they themselves do not do more to tackle the fires themselves. This summit has been characterised as much by division as by unity. And much of it involved this man. Donald trump has been warned by many at the summit about the damaging impact of his trade war with china. And today he sought to calm the markets by talking up the prospects of a deal. And i think we will have a deal because now were dealing on proper terms. They understand and we understand. Today, mrjohnson continued meeting counterparts on what is still his first summit as Prime Minister, briefing them on brexit, trying to convince them it would not be stopped by parliament. Some of the diplomacy, though, was easier than the rest. At least when it came to discussing the ashes with australias Prime Minister. I want to congratulate you on the ashes. Two to go. No, were not taking anything for granted. James landale, bbc news, biarritz. The Prime Minister is continuing to meet european leaders today at the summit, our chief Political Correspondent vicki young is there. Vicki what is he telling them . Yesterday Boris Johnson yesterday borisjohnson told me he thought the chances of a new brexit deal were touch and go that is still his preferred option, that is what he has been telling eu leaders but of course he is repeating the other message too that either with or without a deal he is determined the uk will be leaving the eu at the end of october. Now, he wants to make sure that eu leaders are taking that message very seriously so he is also saying to them that he thinks they should not be listening to what they call the very wrong messages emerging from some parliamentarians who think they will stop brexit. A senior downing street official said it was incorrect to think it could be stopped. Of course, there will be many who disagree with that, tomorrow the labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn his meeting with other Opposition Party leaders to discuss tactics to try and find out if there isa tactics to try and find out if there is a way they can get together their common cause, it may be change legislation in order to stop a new deal brexit. So far, though, they have been pretty divided on their tactics. But it is all setting up a pretty big battle when parliament returns at the beginning of september. Vicki, thank you. The Prime Minister says the bbc should cough up and pay for free tv licences for all over 75s. It comes after the bbc announced injune that it would restrict the benefit to those in low income households. Borisjohnson suggested the corporation has gone back on a deal to fund the licences, but the bbc said there was no such guarantee. Our Political Correspondent tom barton is here with me. What is going on . This all dates back to 2015 and the licence fee settle m e nt back to 2015 and the licence fee settlement when it was agreed that the responsibility for funding these free licenses would pass from the government to the bbc. Injune, the bbc announced that when government funding ends next year it would only pay for free licences for over 75s who receive pension credit. Now, that will mean that up to 3. 7 million pensioners will lose the benefit and will have to start paying £154. 50 per yearfor benefit and will have to start paying £154. 50 per year for their licence. The bbc says depending on the take up of this new scheme, funding those licences for all over 75s would have cost it an extra £495 million a year. The decision has left dai led to protests and a political row with the Prime Minister saying bluntly that the bbc should cough up. He said the deal reached in 2015 was conditional on the bbc continuing to fund all free licences and downing street say that agreement should be honoured. The bbc, though, says it was the government that decided to stop funding these licenses and there was no guarantee at the time of the agreement that the bbc would continue to fund them and says if it did so the cost would be mean enclosing a number of Services Including bbc two, bbc four and radio 5 live. Thanks. Theres been a third earthquake in five days at a fracking site in lancashire the strongest tremor thought to be related to fracking ever to be felt in the uk. The quake struck the preston new road facility near blackpool at 8 30am this morning, measuring a magnitude of 2. 9. The British Geological survey have plotted the epicentre just metres from the fracking site. A secondary school in fife has been forced to close on the fourth day of scotlands school year because of a large fire. Firefighters worked overnight to tackle the blaze at Woodmill High School in dunfermline. Police say theyve charged a 14 year old boy. James shaw is at the school for us now. James, what are the police saying . As we have heard, a 14 year old boy has been arrested and charged. We would expect him to appear in court tomorrow. The police also thanked local members of the public for the help they have given in providing information about this fire. The alarm was raised just after 5p yesterday and as you can see very extensive damage. The single storey building you can see is an Additional Support unit attached to the school, and then the two story 01 the school, and then the two story ora the school, and then the two story or a three Story Building is the main block of the school and it looks as though at least a third of it has been completely burnt out and there will be substantial damage in other parts of the building as well. Firefighters are still here damping down hotspots, making sure that they have dealt with every part of this very extensive and complicated fire. But the main concern for fife council is what happens to the 1400 pupils who were at this school. They are trying as a matter of urgency to find places for them but it is proving very difficult. Dunfermline isa proving very difficult. Dunfermline is a town that has grown recently and there is definitely a scarcity of school places. So that is the main priority at the moment, finding a place where these children can continue their education. Yes, a huge concern. Thank you, james. Children going hungry over the School Holidays because parents struggle to afford meals, are being trapped in a cycle of despair, according to charities supporting families. Mps say an estimated 3 million children are at risk of going hungry during the summer break. The government says its spent more than £9 million on schemes offering free meals during the holidays. Our correspondentjudith moritz reports from bradford. I think about it 24 7. 24 7. Money is on demis mind all the time, especially when it comes to feeding her son. Its even worse in the Summer Holidays, when he doesnt get Free School Meals. So this is a real lifeline. A mini market at the Gateway Centre in bradford where you only pay what you can afford. Its about that little boy. I dont need to eat. My son does. I dont want to bury my son. Have you ever had to go without food so he can eat . I dont eat at all. Why is that . Because my son comes first. I dont need to, its not about me. Ive lived my life. Hes only six years old. How old are you, demi . 25. Its not about me. Im a mother. All right, guys, who want sandwiches . The centre has seen a surge in this summer. A surge in demand this summer. For families who cant afford a holiday, this is the next best thing. Packed lunches for 50p. And a couple of coaches to take them off the estate and to the seaside for the day. Welcome to blackpool this is the only chance for some on the trip to experience anything like a Summer Holiday. Theyve got their children at home, theyre not getting their Free School Meals so theyve got to find extra money to feed them. And a luxury like a day out at blackpool . That is an absolute luxury, that would not happen. You know, most of the children, if you ask them where theyve been, a lot of them have not even been off the estate. The six weeks holidays is a case of, what are we going to do with the kids . How can we afford it . Even for working families its difficult. Dad david has a full time job, but they still struggle to get by. Is this your Summer Holiday . Yeah, this is our Summer Holiday, its our day away to relax and sort of get away from things. We barely buy anything for ourselves, clothes wise, unless we absolutely need it. It all goes towards the kids. Weve been lucky this last year, a lot of family and friends have donated clothes, School Clothes for them, so that so little money we dont have to spend right now. Back at the centre, every family is offered a free meal every day of the holidays. Vital for parents who are forced to make stark choices. Basically, my gas and electric are getting paid and im putting food in my cupboards but Everything Else isjust on hold, ill have to catch up after the holidays. Its taken courage for these families to talk about something so personal. But they speak from the heart to make people understand how hard it is. Walk in our shoes. Walk in our shoes and then you will know what its like. Judith moritz, bbc news, bradford. Bolton wanderers face liquidation this week after the latest deal to rescue the club collapsed. Researchers in london are trying to learn how mosquitos communicate with each other. Once they do, they plan to develop systems to lure them away from Populated Areas to reduce the incidence of malaria and yellow fever. Our science correspondent, pallab ghosh, has this report. Mosquitoes buzz for us, the whining sound is annoying, but for the mosquito, its a love song. The buzz helps the insects find mates and reproduce. So, what if we could learn to talk mosquito and sabotage their love lives . Malaria and yellow fever is spread through mosquito bites. The vast majority of cases are in africa. In 2017, 200 Million People had malaria and nearly 500,000 of them died. One way to defeat mosquito borne diseases is to turn their buzz against them. For me, it is a sound of utter sophistication. If we could simulate these sounds and use them for new technological devices to perform the attraction of mosquitoes, to lure them away from the sites where they can transmit disease, for example from populations, from households, or also to catch them, kill them, so catch and kill devices could be designed, which are much more effective than the ones we are using right now. The mosquitoes buzz is created by the insects wings. This is the sound of the female on the left. Buzzing look closely and you can see that her wing beat is slower than the males and that is why the males tone is slightly higher. In a breeding swarm, there are around 500 mosquitoes all buzzing away. Just five of them are female and somehow the males can hear and find them. Mosquitoes can be lured away from Populated Areas. This swarm of males can be attracted by the buzz of a female. Simulated mosquito buzzing unfortunately, these audio techniques dont work on females, which are the ones that carry and spread malaria and yellow fever. So, in order to improve these audio traps, the researchers here want to learn more about how mosquitoes communicate. If we magnify this mosquitos hearing antenna, we can see how it opens up at sunset when its time to swarm. Marta anders is studying how it detects the sound of potential mates so that she can find ways of disrupting the process. The mosquitoes use their hearing to detect mating partners. We are trying to find new ways to stop mosquitoes from hearing, using different drugs that then can be applied in the field to stop the mosquito populations from reproducing and try to collapse them. By disrupting their communications, the researchers believe that eventually they can rid millions from the menace of mosquitoes forever. Pallab ghosh, bbc news. Sir ian botham, who once starred at headingly in an ashes series says that ben stokes is englands special one after the all rounders incredible unbeaten century on the same ground kept this series alive. 135 from the all rounder saw england win the third test by one wicket and level the series at 1 1. Walking off at the end, time to take everything in and realise what wed just done as a team, notjust as an individual. I think bouncing back from being bowled out for 67 to having to chase down 300 and something, it was brilliant. We have a few days off here before the next test starts, so when we return to manchester we have to put everything behind us what we have managed to achieve and start again in manchester. Because this will all be forgotten if we lose the next test match, because then the ashes have gone. So, what now for the rest of the series . Two to play. The fourth test at old trafford starts in ninbe days time, so how do australia regroup after such a body blow the job of the behind the scenes support staff is to keep themselves together, remember that they came so close to retaining, they bowled england out for 67 in the first innings. They are the type of messages that need to be reinforced, rather than focusing on a couple of moments yesterday which, if they do let them define what happens for the re st of let them define what happens for the rest of the series, australia will not end up winning this. The sale of Bolton Wanderers has fallen through, and the clubs administrators say the process of closing down the company will commence on wednesday. The League One Side had been given until 5pm tomorrow by the English Football League for a takeover to be completed or face the process of expulsion from the league. A tentative deal had been in place but, according to the administrator Paul Appleton, it collapsed over the weekend. He says the club will be liquidated with the loss of more than 150 jobs. U nless unless they can find another buyer very quickly. Rory mcilroy has won the pga tour championship for a second time earning him more than 12 Million Pounds in prize money. Despite not winning a major and missing the cut at the open, the northern irishman thinks its been a really good year to win the fedex cup on multiple occasions now is a pretty big deal. I think anytime you can do something that the only other person to do it is tiger woods, you know you are doing something right. So it has been a wonderful season for me. I have played very consistently, three wins, a lot of top tens and a lot of good performances and good golf, so yes, it is a pretty special feeling to get that second fedex cup title. The us open gets under way in the next few hours, the british number onejohanna konta due on court this afternoon against russias daria kasatkina. Novak djokovic starts the defence of his title against spaniard Roberto Carballes baena. Djokovic has already won two grand slams this year, victory in new york would take him to 17 major titles, one behind rafael nadal and three behind roger federer. More or less everything is about grand slams, you know . In terms of how i see tennis and how i approach it. Because, you know, they are the most, so i will definitely try to play my best tennis and aim to play my best tennis at these events. Thats all for now, i point you towards the website where there is lots more about ben stokes and the win over australia. The pod cast is worth a list, and you can also listen to the whole final hours commentary of that incredible test. We will have more for you later. Thank you, olly, we will follow your direction as ever a vast raft of volcanic rocks stretching over 150 square kilometers is drifting through the pacific ocean, scientists say. The sea of pumice the size of 20,000 football fields was first reported by australian sailors earlier this month. Experts say the mass likely came from an underwater volcano near tonga which erupted around the seventh of august. Tom whitehead and shannon lenz sailed their boat into the pumice field. About an hour out of tonga, we started running into a few of them, just patches of them. They were kind of like a row. And so there would be one row, and we were kind of go through it, and it would sound like tree branches or something, thats the first thing i thought of, and so anyway, i came up on deck, and shannon said. At first we thought it was whale poop, but it became obvious that there was way more of it than any normal size pod of whales could come up with, so we realised that it was pumice. It was very odd, it was like we had wandered into pirates of the caribbean, and it wasjust bizarre. But we knew that we had read briefly about pumice, and it was obviously pumice, it was obviously volcanic. What i was worried about was that we might be running into volcanic activity. And since we were going about a knot and a half, there was no way could have avoided it if we were going toward a volcano. Time for a look at the weather with stav. Hello. Well, apart from scotland the rest of the country is enjoying a Bank Holiday Weekend this weekend and its going to be a record brea ker already. Temperatures have been broken for the Bank Holiday Weekend. Yesterday we saw 33. 3 celsius at heathrow in london. And for many of us today, the Bank Holiday Monday could promise to bejust as hot or even hotter. And again we could break some records, warm air coming up for the near continent, cooler air looms though over the north atlantic. Behind this cold front which has some rain on it itll gradually work its way eastwards across the country introducing the cooler air over the next few days and that will introduce rain and some thunderstorms. Temperatures returning close to the seasonal norm by the end of the week. In the short term though its still very hot across central and eastern parts of the country. Bit more cloud and mist across western areas, perhaps a few showers just pushing into cornwall and devon through the day. And this weather from will be getting ever closer to western scotland and the western side of northern ireland, so breezy cloudier conditions here, not as hot across the central belt of scotland today but another hot one in the south east, 32 to 33 degrees maybe 34 degrees locally in the south east. As we head through tonight it looks like those showers and thunderstorms become a bit more widespread, pushing in across southwest england into wales and also that weather front bringing some wet weather to western scotland into northern ireland. But elsewhere its going to be a dry and clear one very muggy once again across the south east. Tuesday again is another hot day across eastern areas. But across eastern areas. Change takes place out west more but change takes place out west with more cloud, outbreaks of rain and scatters of showers pushing into northern parts of too, i imagine some could be quite heavy. Quite a temperature difference, the high teens across the far north west, the high 20s for england and wales, but in the south east again, the low 30s is quite possible. Through tuesday night, it turns much more unsettled across northern and western areas, a scattering of showers, longer spells of rain and some thunderstorms as we start to see it moving slowly eastwards. Again dry and muggy. You can see these areas of low pressure ganging up, arriving towards the end of the week to bring spells of wet and windy weather, but you can see the temperature slowly dropping as the temperature slowly dropping as the week goes on. Hello this is bbc news with carrie gracie. The International Response to the devastating amazon fires the g7 looks to make an emergency deal to help tackle the crisis. This is the starting point, it was very important to have a clear well. First of all with the amazon countries, but also the International Community to immediately fight the fires. And then to support this forestation. The announcement of the first contribution to. We are ready to receive the amazon countries and all those that want to support them during the General Assembly of the United Nations and we hope it will be possible to have an event in which a Long Term Programme will be discussed and established and a massive mobilisation of the International Community will be established to support the amazon countries. What is your message to the brazilian president , who has pursued mining in the amazon, further farming pursued mining in the amazon, furtherfarming in the pursued mining in the amazon, further farming in the amazon who perhaps does not seem as concerned as you are . I hope what has happened will be the red alert and based on that red alert brazil and the other amazonian countries will understand how important it is also for them to preserve the amazon. I think the amazon, some say it is of fundamental interest of the countries of the region but also have something of interest to the whole of humankind and we would need to be able to support those countries to preserve. In your conversations here are you satisfied all conversations here are you satisfied a ll world conversations here are you satisfied all World Leaders appreciate the magnitude of the Climate Crisis . am not sure if all World Leaders appreciate the magnitude, our objective here was to really say that we face a climate emergency. That we are having the worst situation ever. That we are much worse than paris and the commitments in paris were not enough. Not enough . Tell us more. I came here to mobilise the International Community through the g7 for the summit and i hope that the International Community will be able to achieve the goals that were defined by the scientific community, which is to limit the temperature grows to 1. 5 degrees at the end of the century and have Carbon Neutrality in 2050. I have seenin states, Business Community. I have seen in the United States an enormous climate to commitment to Climate Action in the whole of the society. I am Climate Action in the whole of the society. Iam hopeful we Climate Action in the whole of the society. I am hopeful we will have a very decisive impact. In todays world, governments to cite much less than all the other bodies of a society. The Business Community is decisive, citizens, and i see in the American Society a fantastic mobilisation that i hope will allow the us to deliver in relation to Climate Action. As you know, the big theme here is fighting inequality, a goal you share with president macron, you are aware of the trade war between china and america, does the trade war make fighting harder . To fight inequality is a different issue. To fight inequality is something that requires a Strong Political commitment in relation to tax systems, in relation to the investment in education and in job creation, especially for the youth. A Strong Political commitment also to change a number of rules in which International Markets work in order to benefit those countries that today are lagging behind. Obviously, the trade was are a problem for Global Growth but independently of the trade wars we need to have a clear understanding that inequality became also in itself an obstacle to Global Growth and effective against conflict. All of which president macron will agree with but he has chosen not to put out a communique that there is not enough common ground. For all the big statements we have heard here, do you think anything people can look at and say this is evidence that the worlds most powerful people understand inequality, support people who do not to have education, health care. Iam seeing not to have education, health care. I am seeing lots of slogans and phrases that make good headlines but i havent seen a huge commitment below that. I am not a member of the g7. You are watching as closely as i am. I see several of the members of the g7 very active in relation to global health, in relation to promoting education initiatives and to several areas of inequality. Of course it is a different pattern depending on different countries, political options. I dont think we can today look into the g there and think they will solve the problems of the world, we need a Strong Political push by everyone. Thank you for making time for us. The un secretary general. The bbc should cough up and pay for free tv licences for all over 75s. Thats the message from the Prime Minister whos suggested the corporation has gone back on a deal to fund the licences, but the bbc said there was no such guarantee. Injune it was announced that only low income households, where one person received pension credit, would be eligible for a free tv licence. Earlier i spoke to ben bradshaw, labour mp for execter and former culture, media and sport secretary. This is the latest untruth from borisjohnson. We said at the time on the select committee that to accept this albatross around its neck would be difficult for the bbc. But the bbc is not a branch of the work and pensions department, it is an independent broadcaster, and if the government wants to continue with free license fees for the over 755, i think it should, it needs to fund them, as the conservative party promised in its manifesto in 2017. So you dont think that the licence fee should be means tested at this time of everyone tightening belts . If the government wants the over 755 to continue to receive free licences, then it should pay for it. That was the conservative partys manifesto. It is not the responsibility of the bbc. The bbc is absolutely right on this. And this again is straight out of the donald trump playbook from Boris Johnson. Yesterday he got channel 4 to go all the way to biarritz to do an interview with him and then cancelled it because he didnt like something that their chief executive had said about politicians who lie, and he is now picking a fight with the bbc. I dont think he has got a majority in parliament for it, so he wont win, and there are many conservative mps, including former culture minister ed vaizey and others who have said quite clearly this is the responsibility of the government, not the responsibility of the bbc. And just on the actual facts of what was negotiated in that settlement, are you saying it is just black and white wrong when the Prime Minister said that those free licence fees paid by the bbc was a condition of the settlement . Absolutely, and it is time we, politicians and the media, call out politicians when they lie. It is simply untrue as borisjohnson has said that it was a condition of that agreement. The bbc was very foolish to agree to carry on temporarily with the system and take responsibility for it, because it was always going to lead to mischievous politicians trying to blame the bbc when inevitably, the bbc would have to decide at some stage in the future that it couldnt continue to subsidise this because it is not itsjob. The bbc is an independent broadcaster, not a branch of the department for work and pensions. This was always going to happen. The bbc were stupid to accept this as part of the licence fee, but it certainly wasnt a condition of it, and if the government once over 755 to continue to receive free licences, it needs to fund it. You mention the channel 4 issue a few minutes ago, and now we have got a bbc who was telling the truth, who is not telling the truth kind of issue with the Prime Minister. That is honestly a difficult place for the National Broadcaster to be in, because impartiality is of course one of our most founding core principles. Yes, but there is no conflict between impartiality and telling the truth. The chief executive of channel 4 was saying, i think she was absolutely right, is that when broadca5ter5 including the bbc know that a politician is lying, they need to call it out. They need to call it a live, notju5t you some sort of euphemism, like thats funny or that5 5trange. The job of independent broadca5ter5 in our system to be impartial but also to call out untruth5, and the bbc would not allow itself to be cowed by this new Prime Minister, u5ing tactic5 as i say that come straight out of the donald trump playbook. Ben bradshaw, thank you forjoining us. It was a big night in manchester last night, with Ariana Grande headlining the pride festival. It was the first time shed performed in the city since a memorial concert for those killed in the arena bombing two years ago. In the crowd were fans whod attended that show on the night of the attack in may 2017. Two of them met up with our entertainment correspondent, colin paterson, to explain why it was so important for them to be there. So one last time i need to be the one who takes you home an emotional Ariana Grande, back on stage in manchester for the First Time Since the one love concert more than two years ago. This was not a full performance, but rather a 35 minute set to headline the Manchester Pride festival, an lgbt celebration. In may, 2017, 22 people were killed in a terrorist attack at her Manchester Arena show. Last night, security was tight, with only see through bags allowed and many of the fans who had been there on the night of the attack were back, including mollie and alex. My anxiety has been at an all time high, lets put it that way. Its been kinda screwing with my stomach a little bit, but its the sort of thing when i have something presented to me like this, im determined. Im, like, i want to do this. Im not going to lie, it did take a lot of time to think about it because of what happened last time, but iju5t thought it was a brilliant chance for everybody to get together and show solidarity in the best way. On this tour, Ariana Grande is playing arena shows in london, birmingham, sheffield and glasgow but for manchester, shes done something different. This is pride. I came from italy especially for Ariana Grande. Im here only for her. So proud of her. She5 amazing. We saw her last week and we told her weve got so much love to give her and that it5ju5t going to blow her away. But pride is for over 18s only, meaning that her younger fans missed out. Her set consisted of only nine songs, and the likes of thank u, next and no tears left to cry prompted huge sing alongs. And mollie and alex clearly enjoyed themselves. I was just so grateful i was able to do it and ijust feel so happy and so relieved. It was emotional, as i expected, but i had a really good time. It was amazing. Its better than every other act that5 ever come to pride. Im happy with that. She5 phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal shes the biggest name ever to come to pride. The set wasnt long enough, we need more. Im not crying, because it took too long, but im emotional on the inside. Many fans thought there would be an onstage announcement from Ariana Grande about her putting on her own Manchester Show in the future, but there wasnt, meaning her performance at pride could be her last in the city for quite a while.
