Theres optimism around a us trade deal after talks with President Trump though Boris Johnson acknowledges its likely to take more than a year. Well be exploring what eu leaders make of the latest brexit developments. Also tonight how the rainforest continues to burn in northern brazil. Hectare after hectare of pristine amazon, the worlds lungs going up in smoke and worse still, its taking place in a supposedly protected national park. Police in hong kong fire a warning shot at protestors as Anti Government demonstrations continue. The hot weather is set to last through the bank holiday after record breaking temperatures today. Cut away. And ben stokes leads a thrilling comeback for england keeping ashes hopes alive. Good evening. Borisjohnson has told the bbc that whether the uk leaves the eu with a deal at the end of october is now touch and go. The Prime Minister was speaking at the g7 summit in france, where hes also said no deal would mean keeping a substantial part of the £39 billion the uk had agreed to pay the eu. Hes also been meeting President Trump for the First Time Since becoming Prime Minister, as our chief Political Correspondent vicki young reports from biarritz. Side by side, but not quite in step. Borisjohnson hopes his american friend will help him out and boost trade between their two countries. But is this a partnership of equals or will the uk get trampled all over by its mighty ally . Do you know who this is, hes going to be a fantastic Prime Minister. And we are going to do a fantastic deal. Once we clear up some of the obstacles in our path. Sitting down over breakfast, donald trump said britains departure from the eu would be liberating. Were having very good trade talks between the uk and ourselves. Were going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than weve ever had with the uk, and at some point they wont have the obstacle of. They wont have the anchor around their ankle, because that is what they have. When i spoke to the Prime Minister, he said there were massive opportunities for british businesses. Well, the americans are very ambitious to get this done as fast as possible, they really want results, you know, within a year, i suppose, by next june or july. Were keen to go as fast as we can, but we want this to be a really big, thoroughgoing, comprehensive trade deal. You know that the experts say it cant be done in a year, it is going to take longer. Well, i think years and years is an exaggeration, but i think to do it all within a year is going to be tight. Ill be honest with you, my own experience of the way the americans work, and the size and complexity of the deal we want to do, probably means we wont be able to do it within a year. That doesnt mean. Five years . No, well do it faster than that. We need to do it fast, but to get the whole thing done within a year is going to be a big ask. Borisjohnson also met the president of the european council, putting behind them an argument over who would be to blame for a no deal brexit. I couldnt agree more thats the spirit. There was a time just a few weeks ago when mrjohnson said the chances of that were a million to one. So what does he think now . In the last few days, there has been a sort of dawning realisation in brussels and other european capitals that, you know, what the shape of the problem is for the uk. And i think everybody gets it by now. Its to do with that withdrawal agreement, its to do with the fact that under the current terms, wed be kept locked in the eu legal order, we would be kept locked in the trading system, without any say on those things. That cant work for a great economy and a great country like the uk. So, is no deal still a million to one . You said it repeatedly. It depends very much on the willingness to cooperate and the common sense of. Have you detected more willingness . Look, im an optimist, but i do think. Its going to take more than a bit of optimism. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal. So, it is more likely than it was, do you think . I think its going be touch and go. A no deal brexit wont affect everyone in this room but mrjohnson admits it could be bumpy for the uk. Can you guarantee to people they will be able to get their medicines . That is certainly a guarantee that we can make. But i dont want, at this stage, to say that, you know, there wont be unforeseen difficulties, because that is the. You said youre willing to contemplate it, you are willing to take the country in that direction, two months away, potentially, people watching this want to know what it is going to mean in real terms. Its entirely the right thing to do. So, the preparations that were making between now and october the slst are under no circumstances going to be valueless, they need to be done anyway. Lets get them done fast and in a professional and confident way. Its been all smiles and warm words beside the sea here in the south west of france. But the Prime Minister has some testing weeks ahead. How did it go, Prime Minister . Tres bien. Vicki young, bbc news, biarritz. Our europe editor katya adler is in biarritz for us. We know now katya that borisjohnson thinks brexit with a deal is touch and go. What does the eu think . Eu leaders have two takeaways when it comes to brexit and this g7 meeting, which is more positive and then decidedly negative for them. Eu leaders think and no deal brexit is becoming increasingly likely. Time is simply running out unless the Prime Minister would perform a u turn and ask for another brexit extension. Eu leaders do believe borisjohnson has something secret up borisjohnson has something secret up his sleeve, realistic alternative to the brexit deal and the famous backstop for the irish border. The Prime Minister tells them the ball is in the eus code but eu figures said they say to me they see no point in watering down the backstop evenif point in watering down the backstop even if they did consider getting rid of it altogether because they see the Prime Minister doesnt have a majority in parliament that would guarantee that even then the brexit deal would get through. They see instead he is focusing on domestic politics, shoring up his premiership and winning an election rather than reaching a compromise deal with the eu. They tell me they are in arms folded, watching and waiting mood and the mood is positively gloomy. Ona more and the mood is positively gloomy. On a more positive front at the g7, eu leaders have seen leaders do a touch dance, stand close to donald trump, they know he wants a good trade deal in the future, post brexit with the united states. But in the other hand he hasnt turned his back on eu positions when it comes to iran or a trade deal with china. That is important. Europe needs the uk close on the world stage when it comes to geopolitics, to be taken seriously like other big players like the us and russia. And that wont change, no deal brexit or not. Thank you very much. The fires burning across part of the amazon rainforest were high on the leaders agenda at the summit, with a pledge to quickly help the countries affected. Brazil is at the centre of the crisis, especially northern regions including the province of rondonia. Our correspondent will grant has been on board a greenpeace plane to see the extent of the damage there. This is environmental destruction at its most brutal. Swathes of forest reduced to a graveyard of blackened, charred remains. The flames rage unabated, fanned by the dry weather and wind no one putting them out. The smoke at times reduces visibility to almost nothing. An acrid stench of burning hanging over the devastated landscape. Greenpeace flew over the state of rondonia to map the extent of the damage. And they blame one man for letting this situation get out of hand. The bolsonaro government is totally responsible for what is happening now, because the numbers of deforestation are increasing since the beginning of the year. So in eight months, he dismantled all the Environmental Policies that took more than ten years to build. Ignoring the politics for a moment, on an ecological level, on the human level, this isjust a very disturbing sight. Hectare, after hectare of pristine amazon, the worlds lungs, going up in smoke and worse still, its taking place in a supposedly protected national park. But in brazil, you cant ignore the politics. All weekend, angry protests have been held in major brazilian cities and outside its embassies abroad. People furious at bolsonaros terrible environmental record. But president bolsonaro remains unrepentant, accusing europe of a colonialist attitude and insisting brazil has the right to open up the amazon to development. Many believe the fires are especially bad this year thanks to his message that subsistence farmers, cattlemen and major industry feel emboldened to set the forest alight. But theres some sympathy for Greater Development in the state of rondonia, where bolsonaro won over 70 of the vote. Im not against bringing International Companies here, as long as they bring jobs says this man, owner of a lumber yard in amazonas state. Its no use just pointing your finger to Say Something is wrong and not providing an alternative to people. It has always been a challenge for brazilian governments to strike a balance between using the amazon to provide a living for the millions who live there and protecting it for the common good. But president bolsonaro has opted to exploit it for mining and farming. With the dry season much worse in september and october, the fires are likely to burn for many weeks yet. Will grant, bbc news, rondonia state. England made an extraordinary comeback to win the third ashes test against australia today, largely thanks to an unbeaten century from ben stokes. The victory at headingley keeps alive englands hopes of winning the series, as andy swiss reports. Cut away what an innings, what a player. It was the stuff of sporting miracles, ben stokes the hero of headingley after one of the most remarkable victories cricket has surely ever seen. England had begun needing an unlikely 203 runs and with stokes leading the charge, the fans were starting to believe. But then the wickets tumbled, when stuart broad was the ninth man out, england still needed 73. All over, surely . But after being joined by last manjack leach, stokes unleashed something quite extraordinary. Tearing into the australian bowling and as he reached his century, the crowd sensed something special. Hundred for ben stokes, what a summer hundred for ben stokes, what a summer hes having. Six followed six as the target ticked down. Stokes utterly inspired, it was spine tingling, spectacular drama, as this took england within two. It is six. Australia had their chances, they dropped a catch and then they fumbled a run out. Could you believe it . Moments later, stokes sent headingley into dreamland. Single handedly, single batted, he dragged england to an astonishing win. Even by his standards, an extraordinary feat. Moments like that dont come along very often and its an amazing game to be part of, to be there at the end and still keep our ashes hopes alive. It was a pretty special feeling coming off at the end. And for those who had just watched him, it is one of those moments that will go down in history. We were thinking, it cannot happen. Then it would happen, everyone was in shock. Brilliant innings. He said he had to start hitting it and he did that and some, did he. He has given cricket one of the most incredible comebacks. It was phenomenal to be able to pull that off. We had some things going against us at times during the test match. Sometimes you have to ride it and it was incredible to watch. His other team mates have also been paying tribute. Not sure he can believe what he has done, said stuart broad, while his employers posted this photo, calling stokes a superhero in white. And after this, it is pretty hard to disagree. One of englishs crickets most dazzling talents and one of its most unforgettable days. And andy is at headingley now. How does this rank against other ashes achievements for england . England have seen a few ashes miracles over the years, some of the fa ns miracles over the years, some of the fans will remember ian bothams heroics in 1981 when he scored a century. This was right up there. Remember the background, england we re remember the background, england were bowled out forjust 67 in their first innings, one of their worst ever batting performances. They knew that if they lost this match their hopes of winning back the ashes were over. So for ben stokes to perform under such extraordinary pressure was quite remarkable. From a personal perspective, it adds to an already incredible summer for him because he did something very similar in the World Cup Final where he inspired england to victory. From a team perspective, it gives england a team perspective, it gives england a chance in the ashes because it is 110w a chance in the ashes because it is now 1 1 with two matches left and after this they will believe anything is possible, michelle. Andy swiss at headingley. Lets take a look at some of todays other news. A 69 year old man who was stabbed to death in west london has been named as allan isichei. The grandfather was attacked after leaving a pub yesterday evening. A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Seven people, including two children, have been killed in a collision between a helicopter and a light aeroplane in majorca. Local officials said there were no survivors from the crash. Eyewitneses said the aircraft came down close to a farmhouse near the town of inca. All major uk airports have been told to introduce new 3d baggage screening equipment before the end of 2022. Heathrow is already investing £50 million in the technology. Ministers say it will boost security, speed up pre boarding checks, and could end the restrictions on travelling with liquids and laptops. Theres been a further escalation of violence in hong kong where a Police Officer has fired a gun during Anti Government protests. The Authorities Say his life was in danger. The protests began in response to a controversial extradition bill and now have been taking place for 12 weeks. From hong kong, John Sudworth reports. Hong kong was once celebrated for its stability. Not any more. Onlookers gazed down on the political crisis being lived out in running street battles. By nightfall, it was at times almost medieval. This rain of sticks and clubs, brought to an end only by the sound of a gunshot, as one officer draws his side arm, shooting into the air. Much of this city, it should be said, continues as normal, with the violence only in small pockets. But its intensifying. Peaceful demonstrations dont work, according to so many people, because they have 1 million march, 2 million march, and the government still doesnt listen. And therefore this leads to an escalation of force. Theres now an established pattern. Barricades are set up. There are taunts and provocations. And then the police response. Meeting violence with violence. What is extraordinary is that despite volley after volley of tear gas and rubber bullets, the protesters showed no signs of backing down. In fact theyre advancing, following the tear gas back and moving forward under the police lines. With no political solution in sight, the cycle continues. The families of Police Officers also held a rally, concerned that its their loved ones, not the government, taking the brunt of public anger. The government should do something, notjust push the police in front of the protests, let them face the protests. And i think this will never end. Calm was eventually restored, but these scenes will not go unnoticed in beijing, which has been issuing fresh warnings that the army could be sent in. John sudworth, bbc news, hong kong. A year from now the 2020 paralympics will be underway in tokyo. With 4,000 paralympians set to compete, organisers are hoping the games change attitudes towards disability injapan, as our correspondent nikki fox reports. Music. One year to go, and it feels like a party. All this week, locals have been given the chance to try out some of the 22 sports that will be at the Paralympic Games in tokyo next year. A first time for many. Translation people with disabilities, ive never seen them playing sport before. Translation disabled or non disabled, its important to raise awareness and participate, like today. In front of crowds today, german world record holder and paralympic gold medallist markus rehm unofficially broke his own personal best, a distance that wouldve been good enough to win gold at the last three olympic games. He thinks its about time pa ralympians are viewed the same as olympians. I want to show them that we are not like poor athletes that are just happy to do sports. No, we are High Performance athletes. We like to be respected for our results, for our performance, and not for what disability we have. I thin the focus us too much on the disability i think the focus us too much on the disability and less on the ability. Japan hosted their first games 55 years ago. Back then, 378 athletes from 21 countries took part. Next year, more than 4000 athletes from 165 countries will attempt to win gold. And while the last games as a whole focused on improving infrastructure, next years paralympics is set on changing attitudes. Translation there are many social barriers in japan. That is a big issue. For example, there are few accessisble restaurants, disabled and non disabled people study separately at school. We are divided. See you next year. Whats the main objectives . What do you want to get out of the games . We need. Its kind of a changing society. And olympics will play a very, very Important Role to change japanese society. Arigoto paralympic tickets are now on sale, and ive been told that theyre selling at an unprecedented rate, which is good news for organisers who are hoping that the message is getting through so the next generation will see disability in a different way. Nikki fox, bbc news, tokyo. A temperature of 33. 3 celsius was recorded today making this the hottest Late August Bank Holiday weekend on record. Lots of us enjoyed the summer weather. This was the scene at walberswick on the suffolk coast while londons regents park sizzled in the summer heat. And in belfast thousands turned out for the mela festival in the citys botanic gardens. The met office says it could be even warmer tomorrow. Hello, this is bbc news with chris rodgers. You may have noticed. England have pulled off one of the most sensational victories in cricket history, beating australia at headingley to win the third ashes test, and level the five match series 1 1. A brilliant century by ben stokes got them over the line. Its already being hailed as one of the greatest batting performances of all time. The cricket analyst, simon hughes, has been telling me he hadnt seen this coming. No, i mean, i think it was the most amazing performance. I think, you know, to try and put it into perspective, we mentioned ian botham in 1981 at headingley, that was an innings which resurrected england from following on and gave them the chance of victory, which bob willis sealed. This game, and this innings won the match. It was the last innings of the game and the percentage of runs that stokes scored with not only the last man, but with the last four men, when bairstow was out, england still needed 114 to win and stokes made 96 of those 114 runs, while three wickets fell at the other end. He had to farm a strike with the number 11, obviously not a very good player, so having to protect him and still score the runs as well. The australian bowling attack was outstanding, so i think its the best ever test innings ive ever seen and that compares with ian bothams 149 at headingley, and graham gooch who also made a brilliant 100 at headingley against the west indies. Brian lara making an incredible innings to win a match against australia for the west indies. This game, and this innings is, i think, better than all of them because of the way he constructed it. He batted very slowly to start with and really wore the bowlers down. But then gradually, having to completely expand and create a different repertoire, where he was playing reverse shots and switch hits and things like that, so he married test cricket batting with t20 batting and took england home and kept the ashes alive, so a remarkable performance. So to put this into context, looking at what people were saying on social media, they are, like you, comparing him to brian lara, to ian botham, calling for a knighthood. Do you think what we have seen today is worthy of that . Or should we wait a little bit longer to see how it pans out . I mean, ian botham was knighted not only for his contributions to the ashes, but also for his incredible work in charities for leukaemia research. But i think with stokes not only should we mention about the batting, but he also kept england in the game with the ball becausejofra archer went off with some kind of cramp on the second day and stokes took over his mantle and bowled Something Like 24 successive overs spread over two days from one end, kept his speed up of 88 miles an hour for most of that in very hot conditions and managed to wear the australian batting down so they didnt get a total that was too far out of range, and then saw england to their record ever run chase in the fourth innings. Time for a look at the weather with ben rich. Good evening. Sunshine has been the order of the day across many parts of the uk. With that sunshine has come some heat. Temperatures to the west of london got up to 33 degrees today, courtesy of a feed of south easterly winds from the near continent. That was the sort of air affecting most parts of the uk today, but western fringes were a bit cooler thanks to a westerly, atlantic influence. That front will move eastward, introducing something slightly cooler for tomorrow. And then this front in the atlantic will bring a more meaningful change eventually, introducing cooler air across all parts of the uk. It will be a slow process in eastern areas. Eventually it will turn cooler and we will see rain and perhaps thunderstorms as well. Tonight a lot of dry weather and clear spells. But western parts of the uk are likely to see cloud, mist and fog developing. Temperatures between 12 16. As we go into monday morning there could be Poor Visibility in Western Areas up into north west england and south west scotland. Some of this mist could be slow to clear. We may see some showers developing across the far south west of england, rain pushing into the Western Isles late in the day. A cooler day for many western and northern parts, 21 degrees in glasgow for example. In the south east, again getting up to 33 degrees. Plenty of warm weather and sunshine on tuesday, this is where the front stalling in the west. But there is the increasing chance of the odd shower or thunderstorm breaking out. The further north and west you are, the cooler and fresher it will be. As we go through tuesday night as this fresher air moves eastwards, there may be some pretty intense thunderstorms. Some places could see lightning and heavy rain as well. As this moves its way in as we go into wednesday, we will see rain in many places. Behind that, that is where all of us get into the cooler air. It will be cooler in the middle part of the week and there will be outbreaks of rain particularly in the north and west. Hello. This is bbc news with chris rogers. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment with nigel nelson and jo phillips. First the headlines. At the g7 summit in france Boris Johnson says the chances of a brexit deal are touch and go. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal.
