A major complaint by many workers across the world is that their salaries remain fairly stagnant, while their bosses continue to enjoy bumper pay rises. However times may be changing. A new report by the High Pay Centre suggests the salaries of chief executives for the uks top 100 listed companies saw a significant drop last year. The report found that median pay for ftse 100 bosses fell by 13 in 2018 to 4. 2million, compared to 4. 8million in 2017. Despite the fall, their pay is still 117 times that of the average uk full time worker earning 35,700 a year. Claudine adeyemi is a director at career ear, an advice and recruitment platform. Good to have you with us. Do you think it is a good thing that it has fallen . I do think it is a good thing. For some decades we have seen that chief executives are receiving incredibly large pay in comparison to that wider workforce and the disparity in pain can then add various tensions if we are thinking about the wider economy and social cohesion and inequality in pay. It is definitely a good thing that that pay is coming down for ceos, even so slightly. You would be familiar with the argument that you want to attract the top talent and you have to pay enough to win them over. Absolutely and i am a big advocate for making sure it is a balance that is struck and making sure we are still maintaining, throughout the uk, the ability to continue to be competitive but the disparity is huge, as the report that has come out today sides. The problem is that the seed of discord are sown when bosses say to that stuff, sorry, we cannot afford much of a pay rise this year and then it emerges that people at the top are given pay rises or at a very big salaries. It is in the inconsistency in some cases. That is correct as well. We know that at least two thirds of employees would quit if they found underappreciated and we are seeing that can be afflicted by this gonna disparity. Those pay rises happening at the top but not at the bottom. Those tensions can really affect morale and culture. What would your advice be if someone is watching this, i woke on average salary or perhaps below, they want to somehow to negotiate a pay rise, how do they go about it . Firstly you can really look at the market and figure out whether you are being paid below average. Lots of tools 110w paid below average. Lots of tools now on line that allow you to do that. I am a big advocate for transparency in relation to pay and talking about money generally. It is frowned upon in most places to speak to your colleagues about pay but if you do have good relationships with people, you can have some of those conversations and try to stop benchmarking internally. You need to make sure you do not feel undeserved and that you really understand what you value is and you fight for it and having those conversations is incredibly important, particularly if you are in our underrepresented group wet statistically as a woman, a minority ethnic, you are much less likely to ask for a pay rise and or successfully get one. I would advocate for everyone to get their true value. Thank you very much indeed. No worries, thank you.
