England finish the fourth day 96 4 in the second innings of the lords ashes test. Good evening. Police in berkshire have been searching a caravan site close to where a 28 year old policeman was killed on thursday night. Thames Valley Police have confirmed that a postmortem examination revealed pc Andrew Harper, died from multiple injuries. Officers said it was consistent with him being dragged along a road by a vehicle. Detectives are continuing to question 10 people, aged between 13 and 30 years old arrested on suspicion of murder. Daniela relph reports. Friends, colleagues, the local community. The tributes to Police Constable Andrew Harper have been constant. Almost exactly a month ago to the day, pc harper was getting married. Now, instead of heading off on honeymoon next week, his new wife has to face life without him. A postmortem was carried out on andrews body yesterday and the cause of death has been recorded as multiple injuries. The cause of death is consistent with our current belief that andrew was caught between the vehicle and the surface of the road and then dragged for some distance. Forensic teams have continued their search for evidence throughout the day. There have been extended road closures, widening the search area. Much of the focus has remained on the four Houses Corner caravan site, around three miles from where pc harper was killed. Forensic teams working alongside officers leading the murder inquiry. All having to face the difficultjob of investigating the death of one of their own. The death of pc harper has highlighted the dangers facing Police Officers in their everyday work. Its a pressure recognised by other emergency services, some of whom were here today to pay their respects. A lot of people say we have a dangerousjob but most of our opinions is that ourjob is nowhere near as dangerous or as difficult as the police and the ambulance service. Trying to establish a detailed chain of events remains a police priority. Riot police have cleared roads in hong kong after a standoff with pro democracy protesters, as the political crisis in the city enters its 11th week. A rival pro government rally also drew thousands, highlighting the deep divisions that have been widening ever since china took back control from britain two decades ago. From hong kong, heres our china correspondentjohn sudworth. And a warning, his report contains some flashing images. Hong kongs summer rains have done nothing to dampen the fury. Most of it directed at the police now seen as agents of a hostile state by people who say they are fighting for their citys freedom. Just a short drive away, china has stationed Paramilitary Police in the border city of shenzhen, designed, it seems, as a very visible and ominous warning. Are you worried china will send troops to hong kong . No, because if they do, theyll have to pay for that. We are not afraid for anything. On the other side of this deeply divided city, pro beijing groups were rioting. They reject the claim that china is eroding hong kongs special status. And they support the police, who by nightfall were once again facing off against the pro democracy protesters and sweeping them from the streets. Well, what began as a provocation by a small group of hard core protesters has turned into this. A massive show of force by dozens of riot police, clearing a busy shopping street. It is a clear illustration of the intractable nature of hong kongs political crisis and of the breakdown of trust on all levels. Bystanders, drawn in by the scenes, also hurled abuse at the police. A once confident, outward looking city trapped in a cycle of recrimination and bitterness. John sudworth, bbc news, hong kong. The senior conservative mp, sir Oliver Letwin, has said he could not support a plan to prevent a no deal brexit that would result in Jeremy Corbyn appointed as a caretaker Prime Minister. Its another blow for the labour leaders plan to form a time limited government of National Unity. Im joined now by our poltical correspondent, nick eardley. Does this make it look likeJeremy Corbyns plan is more and more unlikely . I think the numbers are just not there, he needed to win over a considerable number of conservatives to make this work and that just is not conservatives to make this work and thatjust is not happening. Some of those who said yes we want to meet with Jeremy Corbyn those who said yes we want to meet withJeremy Corbyn and speak about tactics have medically had but does not extend to potentially making him Prime Minister. The latest today was Oliver Letwin. Someone will be important in this process although not a household name because he has spearheaded cross party talks to try to stop no deal for the last few months. Jeremy corbyn argues that he is the leader of the biggest Opposition Party and because of that he should be the man who takes over. This is what he had to say today. I suspect all those people that are now making lots of noises in the media will realise that the option that will be put to parliament of supporting a motion of no confidence against the government in order to prevent a no deal brexit, is the most important vote they will ever do in parliament, because it will prevent this country being brought to a great problem by a no deal exit. I suggest they should think about that and support the motion that i will put forward. Well rebel tories are not being won over and Oliver Letwin made it clear this morning that he would not back Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister. I much prefer at the moment to try and get to something that will actually get us substantially alternative that we can agree on without going through all that and finding out whether people are in the end willing to do that or not. But its not something you are prepared to rule out at this stage . Well, i would rule it out if it led to Jeremy Corbyn being in downing street. Im not at all convinced there is any solution that involves such a mechanism as you are describing that would not have that result. So i think we are talking there about very distant possibilities. I much prefer to focus on the question, how do we get there . So where does this leave us now, does this make no deal brexit more oi does this make no deal brexit more or less likely . More likely because opposition partiesjust or less likely . More likely because opposition parties just cannot get their ducks in a row to try to figure out what the alternative is. They can make against downing street which is resolute that whatever happens the uk leaves on the 31st of october. It is getting ready, putting plans into action now and i suspect many in downing street will be sitting there fairly relaxed about the fact that opposition parties are spending more time arguing with each other on tactics than they are with downing street on whether i no deal brexit is a good thing or not. In terms of the urgency by getting ever closer to that he date of a club with the 31st andi that he date of a club with the 31st and i suppose the default position is if there is no alternative government of National Unity the default would be that we leave without a deal. If nothing changes thatis without a deal. If nothing changes that is exactly right, we leave the eu on the 31st october without a deal. There theres no sign as things stand that europe is about to renegotiate the deal, although potentially that could change in the next few weeks. Boris johnson hopes the concert did you date you get the more likely it is that europe could blink but no sign of thatjust now. And the parliamentary manoeuvres in Early September will be crucial because that no confidence vote from Jeremy Corbyn will almost certainly happen, whether he wins that is another matter and some toys are very reluctant to bring down a conservative government even to stop no deal. If that happened the rail thanis no deal. If that happened the rail than is ever who would take over and no resolution on that. The other thing being worked on and some hope it will manage to unify the various factions of the moment is legislation to try to force the Prime Minister in late october to go back to europe and ask for another extension. Another warning today from Oliver Letwin was that it is all fine and well trying to stop no deal but if you have no alternative thatis deal but if you have no alternative that is what we come back to and that is what we come back to and thatis that is what we come back to and that is the default unless you come up that is the default unless you come up with something else. Many thanks. Crowds have gathered in the sudanese capital to celebrate the signing of a power sharing deal between the ruling military and the civilian opposition alliance. Sudans dominant military figure, general dagalo better known as hemetti told the bbc that the council would abide by every letter of the deal. The agreement is intended to end months of pro democracy protests during which the long serving president , Omar Al Bashir was toppled. Our correspondent in khartoum is sally nabil. Since the early hours of the morning people have gathered here in the streets of khartoum singing and dancing. By all means this is a historic day for sudan. Just after the signing of the constitutional declaration we have seen women in tears, weve seen children waving the sudanese flag. You can see this type of festivity all over khartoum. The declaration paves the way for a civil government which is expected to be formed within a few days. The people here are pinning a lot of hope on this government. We expect it to put the country back on track. Sudan suffers from poverty, high inflation and poor infrastructure. Ive been talking to the people here and they tell me today is a day to be remembered. A dream coming true. A moment they have been waiting forfor so long. Some of them tell me they do not trust the countrys military rulers to abide by the political agreement. But they do believe in themselves, more than ever before. Detectives investigating the death of a Police Officer have said he died of multiple injuries, as they were given more time to question 10 suspects. A 17 year old has been charged with the murder of lawyer peter duncan, who was stabbed with a screwdriver in newcastle on wednesday. Pro democracy protesters take to the streets of hong kong once more theyve been supported by thousands of teachers. Coming up on bbc news, well speak to variety magazines film critic Peter Debruge about the life and career of peter fonda. The chancellor, sajid javid, has said he wants to simplify the tax system when he sets out his first budget in the autumn. In an interview with the times mrjavid said he was considering a number of reforms including possible changes to stamp duty making it payable on property sales, rather than purchases. Property expert henry pryor said these changes do not come without concerns. This would be revolutionary. There are lots of calls, there have been lots of calls for the stamp duty system to be changed and George Osborne made significant changes in 2014 and then in 2016. It has got cheaper for 95 of all buyers but these proposals would be revolutionary and they will, im afraid in the way they have been framed today, cause considerable consternation in the Housing Market in general. Because buyers, sellers and their agents will sit on their hands and wait until there is some clarity. For many, it will be a zero sum game. Sellers will say the buyer is no longer having to foot the stamp duty bill therefore now that ive got to, i am going to put it on to the price. Some buyers who get a mortgage, roughly 65 of people who buy a home get a mortgage, they will be able to put it on their mortgage, borrow money to pay their tax, which a lot of people are uncomfortable about. Is it going to affect revenue . Stamp duty is starting to dwindle because the market is tougher. Particularly at the top end. But is this going to make a difference. For those people trying to scramble on the lower rungs of the housing ladder . First time buyers already dont pay stamp duty up to £300,000. And the government has been desperately trying to encourage older people to downsize. To free up family homes so other people can move up the housing ladder. Are they going to be able to afford this extra cost and will they be prepared to take that on the chin . An orphaned sea mammal that became an internet sensation after being rescued in thailand, has died. The rare marine dugong was one of only a few hundred left in the region, and died from complications after swallowing plastic. Kate harley reports. She was just a baby when she was rescued, orphaned and stranded on a beach in the south of thailand. Rescuers named her marion, meaning lady of the sea. Incredible images of the rare dugong went viral after she was seen nestling into marine biologists. She was nursed back to health before being released back into the sea. But last week marion was found sick and exhausted and couldnt be saved. Vets conducted an autopsy finding that she died due to an infection after ingesting a great deal of plastic. With pieces as large as 20 centimetres long profound in her stomach. The vets who look after her said they are devastated by the loss of the dugong who had been named the nations sweetheart. Many have taken to social media to mourn the loss and thailands department of marine and Coastal Resources said sleep well, little angel. The countrys seaweed and Seagrass Research unit said goodbye, little princess, you are a conservation superstar. Heartbreaking to see you die by our neglect of the environment. We are all guilty as each has thrown a plastic bag or a straw bottle and that has killed an animal somewhere. Her rescuers echoed the call urging people to take responsibility for their waste and hoping the death would not be in vain. The hollywood star, peter fonda, has died at his home in los angeles. He was 79 and had been suffering from lung cancer. The actor was best known for the 1969 film easy rider, which he co wrote and produced. Our correspondent, peter bowes, takes a look back at his career. Easy rider, the counterculture classic. The open road, sex, drugs and rock and roll. The film was written, produced by and starred peter fonda, along with Dennis Hopper, playing a pair of long haired bikers travelling through the American South west and deep south. It touched a nerve with the countrys youth and captured the mood of the times. It also spawned a new era in film making, focused on younger generations. It earned peter fonda an oscar nomination for best original screenplay, and catapulted him to stardom in hollywood. Later in his career he was nominated for best actor in the 1997 drama ulees gold, in which he played a florida beekeeper. He won a golden globe for the film. Peter fonda was part of hollywood royalty, the son of the actor henry fonda and younger brother ofjane fonda. Like his father, he was honoured with a star on hollywoods walk of fame. A lasting tribute to the actor, and as news emerged of his death, a place for his fans to remember their hero. In a statement peter fondas family said they were mourning the loss of a sweet and gracious man who had an indomitable spirit and love of life. Jane fonda said he was her sweet hearted baby brother and went out laughing. Joining me now to discuss fondas legacy is the film critic Peter Debruge from variety magazine. What do you think his abiding legacy to the world of film and entertainment will be . Peter fonda was such a radical when he launched his career. He made counterculture movies on a micro budget and that inspired him to make easy rider really representing the rebel along with Dennis Hopper on their motorcycles riding across country doing drugs, real drugs on camera and representing this generation. But he lived 50 years longer than easy rider and this summer is the university of the release of that film and in that time that rebel spirit sort of became not necessarily mainstream but respected enough that by the time he made his other films he had enough that by the time he made his otherfilms he had mellowed into what we think of the hippies as now. So here is someone who ripped up hollywood we invented it and became really in a way the gentle old grandfather or uncle in his late career. An amazing transformation both in an actor and in the culture that he did a huge service to sort of revolutionise. And that film easy rider was one of the first independently made films that broke through and showed that independent films could succeed so how important was that . Its no coincidence that peter fonda, myself and peter peskin, but peter peskin. He said he was representing the span of new American Cinema and easy rider is really blew the old model apart. It was radical and done almost no budget. Instead of being moralistic and outside of the hippie generation kind ofjudging them it was made from within and something that young people could identify with. And because it cost so little money and it was so current hollywood was struggling to figure out how to make more movies like that and connect with that audience that was turning its attention to television. Looking at his family treat, not only was he destined for a career in movies but almost certainly destined for a successful career in movies. It is interesting because jane fonda was nominated for an oscar the same year as peter. Over the next decade she w011 as peter. Over the next decade she won two oscars and this was an incredible dynasty. One of the things that marks the career of peter fonda is that in the face looks like his father henry, an incredibly handsome and striking man these high cheekbones and when you see him in easy rider basically he is rebelling against the conservative father figure. This guy looks like an icon of hollywood basically representing this rebellious younger generation. But of course yes, he had the dna and also the upbringing to put him on this path and he was in great company. People often talk about easy rider and he co wrote and produced that film. But in his later yea rs how produced that film. But in his later years how did his influence on hollywood show itself if indeed it did . I think in the immediate aftermath of that movie you had things like dirty larry, crazy mary, this wild kind of car chase movie where again he is uprooting the establishment. Playing the outside hero. But leaping forward to later on he is remembered as this kind of bike rider icon. He plays the leader ofa bike bike rider icon. He plays the leader of a bike gang. In ghost rider he is a kind of demonic mephistopheles overseeing the fate of ghostwriter self he had been branded by that iconography of captain america role that he had in easy rider. Thank you very much. Now its time for a look at the weather. As far as the weather goes to date we have had a number of heavy showers particularly focused across the north and west of the country. Taking a look at the satellite picture low pressure is just to the north west of scotland and around that quite a bit of cloud and showers in Northern Ireland and scotland.
