Ten people, aged between 13 and 30 years old, are being questioned on suspicion of murdering a Police Officer in berkshire who was dragged along a road by a vehicle. Pc Andrew Harper, who was 28, died on thursday evening while responding to reports of a burglary. Flags have been flying at half mast across the Thames Valley force area, in memory of the pc, who had only been married four weeks ago. Lets get the latest from our correspondent simonjones, who is at the scene near the village of sulhamstead, in west berkshire. Morning, there is still a big Police Presence at the scene hero pc harper lost his life. This side of the road remains cordoned off and if you take a look at the other side of the a for there are still a lot of these officers there as part of the ongoing investigation. We believe pc harper was dry to cross this rose by a vehicle and ended up back on the side of the street. Throughout the morning we have seen a steady stream of people bringing flowers to the scene, some of them new pc harper. They were visibly upset when they arrived here, see was a tap in. Others were just people from the local community who said they had heard about what it happened, they we re heard about what it happened, they were shocked and saddened and wanted to show their respect. They also wa nted to show their respect. They also wanted to get banks to Police Officers were putting themselves in harms way to try to protect the public. Ten people are still being questioned on suspicion of murder and a nearby caravan site is also being investigated by the police. Roughly three miles from the crossroads where pc Andrew Harper lost his life, caravans behind a fence at a site now linked to the investigation into his death. Ten people are in custody and are likely to face questioning today. All male, ranging in age from 30 down to 13. Pc harper died near the a4 between reading and newbury in berkshire. He was responding to reports of a burglary when he was apparently struck by a vehicle and dragged beneath the wheels. Some reports suggest he was subsequently hit by a police car arriving at the scene. His chief constable says andrew will be missed as a friend, colleague and a fine officer. Highly regarded, popularly member of the team. The team that he was on is a team of officers that are very professional, deal with a number of challenging policing environments. We have experienced Police Officers on that team. He was well regarded, and is a significant loss to the force and also to his colleagues and friends. Pc harper was married just four weeks ago. He and his bride were about to go on their honeymoon. He is the first policeman to die in the line of duty since an officer was stabbed at the houses of parliament two years ago. Flags were flown at half mast yesterday at Thames Valley police stations. Today, pc harpers colleagues will resume their investigation into how a routine call to a seemingly petty crime turned to tragedy. Lets speak to matthew barber, Deputy Police and crime commissioner for Thames Valley. Matthew, good to speak to again this morning. When we spoke yesterday afternoon we were obviously waiting for more details to emerge. A lot more about pc harper, because any sense an investigation discount one can sometimes lose sight of the individual who has has lost their life. What have people been telling about him over the last day or so . Well, as you say, this is a desperately personal tragedy and we must not lose sight of the fact that Andrew Harpers family have lost a loved one and for the second morning now his very new wife has woken up without a husband. That is devastatingly sad and i think everybody across the Police Family and across the country feel that way. You have heard from people in the community who wanted to pay tribute to him and the wiki had done ina tribute to him and the wiki had done in a comparatively short policing career. Yes, absolutely. People have been down at the scene today laying flowers from all across the community, from other members of the emergency services, members of the public, members of the armed forces. I have had tributes paid to him from people across the force who worked with him, people across the forces did not work with him. Members of the public who had been pectins of crime who he had helped over his career and they pay testament to the amazing work that he did. Join with amazing work that he did. Join with a dedicated Police Officer he was and how tragic it is that he has losses life in this way. I wouldnt wa nt to losses life in this way. I wouldnt want to suggest that there is not similar efforts made when someone dies, buti similar efforts made when someone dies, but i imagine it must lead particularly heavily on officers as they try to solve this murder. That it is the murder of one of their colleagues. Absolutely, the loss of any life is tragic and Thames Valley police will of course investigate any murder with great vigour. But obviously for this place officers involved, it is even tougher for those officers who were at the scene, who are investigating this kind of stop there is a personal element to it, which we cannot ignore. As well as pc harpers family, the force is offering support to his friends and colleagues. The chief constable said his News Conference yesterday afternoon that in terms of this particular crime, terrible crime that had happened, there was a need to get as much information from the public as possible. Obviously, youre standing right next to the road rate happens, presumably late on thursday would be relatively busy. Whats a live response is ebbing . Have people been getting in touch . Absolutely, there had been people coming forward and we would ask anybody with any information to contact Thames Valley police on 101 or two confidentially contact crimestoppers. In terms of the investigation, you cannot comment on that, but presumably it will be quite a significant one of the coming days were Thames Valley . Absolutely, this is a significant operation, youre quite right. Only two things that matter today, won a supporting andrews family, but also in china sweeping those responsible to justice and i would not want to speculate on any of the circumstances around the site could jeopardise the investigation. I assure you Thames Valley police will leave no stone unturned. In terms of the tribute had been paid, the force has marked its own respect by lowering flags to have mass over the last day or so. Well they be an opportunity for officers and the community to show their respect and appreciation for pc harper and the sacrifice he made . Of course, this is very much in the brawl. People are laying their own flowers and tributes and people will grieve in their own ways. In due time, the Police Family will continue to pull together and support all of those officers across Thames Valley and across the country who have been affected at this time. Matthew, thank you very much for speaking to us thank you very much for speaking to us this morning. Thousands of of teachers in hong kong have taken to the streets in a show of solidarity with pro democracy activists at the start of an eleventh week of protests in the territory. Meanwhile, in the border city of shenzhen, chinese paramilitary troops have been training this week ina clearwarning to the protesters. Lets go to hong kong now where we can speak to our correspondent stephen mcdonell. Stephen, letting as we see behind you, the familiar umbrellas again on display. A reminder that these protests have quite a long history in hong kong, over several years now. Just on that question, though, of the military vehicles on display. Is that how it is being read in hong kong . Here in this area, this is a very peaceful protest at the moment. Pa rt very peaceful protest at the moment. Part of the reason is they do not wa nt part of the reason is they do not want though to be intervention from the central government. They do not what the armed police to come across the border city. The message has been for many in the Pro Democracy Movement to try and keep things quite peaceful. See here, this message, for example, is telling people to go home after this. They do not want them hanging around here and having classes at the police. The idea is this is the end of the march, they will come down here and you can see people are gathering had this Pedestrian Crossing here. Its the subway, so they want people to go into the subway, for this to wind up go into the subway, for this to wind up without any classes today. I think people were shocked by some of those images they saw at the airport, especially of that place also being bashed with his own truncheon, pulling out his pistol and only then activists filleting. There has been a sense that they need to be a rethinking to avoid that intervention from the central government. We received a briefing from some senior Police Officers just a couple days ago in Police Headquarters and what they have said as they think they have back in control here and to reorganise their operations. They will move 3000 riot police much more quickly. This movement had a more hit and run strategy, go to a playstation as the bricks that it or turn to a cross city tunnel and block the traffic. Go city tunnel and block the traffic. Go toa city tunnel and block the traffic. Go to a police station. The police as they are back in but they also say. That means they have not had training, no agreements, no protocols. If mainland trips which come across the border and be patrolling the streets, it would not be to supplement hong kong police, it would be abating to take complete control. That means the bite for men that intervention is much higher than people thought. But if it did happen, it would be a very tough response indeed from the central government. Stephen, we have had some pictures come in which give us an idea of the pro beijing demos that have also been organised. We saw ina that have also been organised. We saw in a couple of weekends ago, there seems to be on a bigger scale this again. Yes, of course, they are trying to also pull rallies together in what they say is in support of the police and the current arrangement. They are divided opinions here, especially those living in hong kong who have come from the mainland. There is much broader supporter beijing as those 11 hong kong and were born elsewhere. Those who live in hong kong. For that reason, we are seeing these probation rallies, trying to counter this image of these people seizing the news agenda, if you like. Yes, we are saying more and more of that happening on both sides trying to get their message out. But the image does seem to be different here today. There is a feeling thatis here today. There is a feeling that is not a feeling that theres going to be in attack on a playstation, you will notice there are no gas miser helmets. People are not getting ready for battle as they had on previous weekends. It could be that we see a calmer day here today. Who knows . After this authorised rally vanishes, we will see what happens. Stephen, thank you very much for that update. There have been calls to boycott disneys live action remake of mulan after its leading actress voiced support for police in hong kong. Liu yifei reposted a message from a beijing newspaper saying i support the hong kong police. You can beat me up now reportedly the words of a chinese journalist accused of being a Police Officer in hong kong and attacked by protesters. The chancellor, sajid javid has said he wants to simplify the tax system when he sets out his first budget in the autumn. In an interview with the times, mrjavid said he was considering a number of reforms, including possible changes to stamp duty, making it payable on property sales, rather than purchases. He promised he was a low tax guy. Lets talk to our Political Correspondent tony bonsignore. Tony, good morning. This is sajid javid first foray into policy at the treasury, what is he saying . Everybody is desperate to know what is likely to do, to be a busy few months for the chancellor whatever happens with brexit. This interview, try trading off a lot into it, particularly as about stamp duty and he said he was looking at various options. The Times Newspaper have taken that, run with it and said that it may be in the future at some point sell leisure shall be forced to pay stamp duty rather than buyers. In rather emotive subject. In terms realistic levels you might say the next eight months, he was asked about that, sajid javid, i think more interesting it was on tax. He made a comment in this interview that having a tax rate that generated the most revenue does not necessarily have to be the highest rate. A bit of speculation now whether Boris Johnson in highest rate. A bit of speculation now whether borisjohnson in the Leadership Campaign was talking about cutting tax rates are higher earners, he was also asked about brexit. Might we see for example. The government clearly working, particularly for get a new deal brexit, to get some sort of package deal up. We do not have long to find out, by the way. Spending round in september is when he will set out for the next year what he will spend at the department was spent and also at the department was spent and also a budget, of course. Possibly before october the 1st, possibly after. A budget, of course. Possibly before octoberthe1st, possibly after. He does not have long, sajid javid to make these decisions. The fate of the government is still in the balance of what the Opposition Party do, whether they try to move against borisjohnson to prevent a new deal brexit. In terms of what you think the message is that these announcements, speculations by the chancellor in what he meant in the budget, what and a desire to achieve due think . I think the government wa nts to due think . I think the government wants to show a couple of things. They want to show they are in control of the events. They want to show they are prepared for whatever happens, october the 31st, whether there is a deal, by the Boris Johnson as renegotiation whether there is no deal. They want to show voters that they are completely in control of events. But i think theres also something going on here about looking beyond the 31st. Both parties are absolutely desperate to show this is not eating them up, they do have a different agenda for they do have a different agenda for the country, even though of course the country, even though of course the reality is. Tony, thank you very much. Labour has warned that high streets are facing a retail apocalypse, and has put forward proposals to tackle the number of empty shops. Jeremy corbyn is promising to give Councils Powers to re open shops that have been left vacant for more than a year, to give them to start ups and community projects. Its estimated that 29 thousand shops have been vacant for more than 12 months. The shadow housing secretaryjohn healey explained how it would work. They are proposing, as a starter, anything that has been vacant for more than 12 months, the council should be working with those landlords and owners to try and get fresh either retail or other businesses and activity into the shops. Where they will not, where they will not cooperate we need councils of their back up power to say ok, we will manage these premises in the meantime and make sure they argues. It is part and parcel of stopping that downward spiral that we often see with botched up shops and premises in the town centre. The headlines on bbc news. Ten men, aged between 13 and 30, are being questioned on suspicion of murdering pc Andrew Harper in berkshire. Pro democracy protesters take to the streets of hong kong once more theyve been supported by thousands of teachers. The new chancellor sajid javid says he wants to simplify the tax system, and will consider changes to stamp duty, in his first budget. Sport and a full round up from the bbc sport centre. Good morning, gavin. Good morning, sean. Better Weather Forecast at lords of the weekend, thankfully after rain interrupted the second ashes text again. Players wiped out after the morning sentient. There was time for archer to take its first test wicket. Australia will be same on 80 4. 178 behind englands first innings total. There could be quite an interesting, intriguing game left in this test match. Our bowling units aim is to get the next six wickets by lunch and then, i suppose, ideally backed until an hour, half an hourfor lunch on day five and try to force a result that way. We are only three games into the new season of the championship and already one side relegated from the League Last Season have sacked their manager. They lost last night to their manager. They lost last night to one to filton. That was the and for the manager, he managed only one win and his seven months in charge. After they failed to reach the Champions League group stage midweek celtic changed their. Heights are already through to the quarterfinals next eight to one victory over motherwell last night in absolutely atrocious weather conditions. All todays fixtures are on the website. Liverpool is hopeful of starting against that happened and, despite being injured. A fan against that happened and, despite being injured. Afan ran against that happened and, despite being injured. A fan ran onto the pitch during the celebrations. The manager had this to say to the animal can pitch intruder. There is no doubt about how much we love advance, no doubt about that. But that they could all stop doing that, that they could all stop doing that, thatis that they could all stop doing that, that is not the worst example i have so far heard about. It is not funny. What can i say . I do not know what you can do against it, but it is not, i like the fact that we do not have fences in the stadium, but that means there is a lot of responsibility for the supporters, as well. Onto rugby, wales and england continue their preparations for the world cup later when they meet in cardiff. It is in the six days since england beat wales at twickenham, but head coach eddie jones says they need to be absolutely brittle if they want to end this one. The wales boss says that defeat to england means his players now have to prove themselves to secure a world cup spot. There is a lot of pressure on those guys on the weekend, because if some of them do not front and do not perform, then they are opening the door for someone then they are opening the door for someone else. You will not weekend, even this weekend and you would pretty much had sailed potentially a starting spot for the first game are the first couple of games of the world cup. Scotland are in far better shape than they were in the spring, they had a six nations championship hampered by a string of injuries as they take on france in nice. Head coach appreciates the chances were much games give to study how his players perform. The positive about these games as you can focus a lot more on yourself. We had not done that much on an analysis on france, they have changed their Coaching Staff and adas people to the Coaching Staff, so adas people to the Coaching Staff, so they may change the way they play. We just want to make sure that we get our detailed right, our systems and defence, attack, how we work to in the game and how our players are their strengths. Thats much happening right now, while champions new zealand are dominating rivals australia in auckland. Leading 31 points to zero. Just around five minutes to go. The all blacks are getting revenge for last weeks heavy loss to their opponents. In rugby leave, we can beat Warrington Wilson the first time the season to move level on points but then in a separate league table. A dominant first half and the warriors so tries to give them a co mforta ble warriors so tries to give them a Comfortable Lead in a way to a 20 points to six victory. The hollywood star, peter fonda, has died at his home in los angeles. He was seventy nine and had been suffering from from lung cancer. The actor was best known for the 1969 film easy rider, which he co wrote and produced. Our correspondent, peter bowes, takes a look back at his career. Easy rider, the counterculture classic. The open road, sex, drugs and rock and roll. The film was written, produced by and starred peter fonda, along with Dennis Hopper, playing a pair of long haired bikers travelling through the American South west and deep south. It touched a nerve with the countrys youth and captured the mood of the times. It also spawned a new era in film making, focused on younger generations. It earned peter fonda an oscar nomination for best original screenplay, and catapulted him to stardom in hollywood. Later in his career he was nominated for best actor in the 1997 drama ulees gold, in which he played a florida beekeeper. He won a golden globe for the film. Peter fonda was part of hollywood royalty, the son of the actor henry fonda and younger brother ofjane fonda. Like his father, he was honoured with a star on hollywoods walk of fame. A lasting tribute to the actor, and as news emerged of his death, a place for his fans to remember their hero. In a statement peter fondas family said they were mourning the loss of a sweet and gracious man who had an indomitable spirit and love of life. Jane fonda said he was her sweet hearted baby brother and went out laughing. Im joined now via webcam from los angeles by Showbiz Reporter gayl murphy. Good morning. We only ever touchy when somebody has following of their parts, it is sad in some ways. But also, you know, he died at a relatively good age and he had had quite a career, hadnt he . Yes, he had a fantastic career. Six decades long. But he was a good guy, he was one of the good guys. I was talking to someone earlier about what is legacy might be, i do not think i ever heard anybody trash talk peter fonda. They might have talked about what he was doing or who he was hanging out with a maybe he was not getting enough work, maybe he was getting enough work, maybe he was getting too much work, but at the end of the day, none of it was personal. He escaped hollywood a good guy. I think that is really pa rt of good guy. I think that is really part of his legacy, of course, other than the professional part of it, where he took the 1969 counterculture by storm. He starred as wyatt opposite Dennis Hopper in the bury Game Changing vellum, it also starred and launched Jack Nicholsons career, as well. A big felon for similar reasons and again on that are still highly regarded to this day. He said he was a nice guy, but he was quite honest when he was injury by the bbc four years ago about the falling out there had been with Dennis Hopper about that movie. Hopper seems to be peter fonda. With Dennis Hopper about that movie. Hopper seems to be peter fondalj cannot imagine why. You never know, you know, this film as a platform. His star power exploded in 1969. The pelham celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Though, and by the way, this began as the 50th anniversary of woodstock, which embodies the lifestyle of its audience. What a coincidence that is. Critics called it one of the rallying points of the late 60s, a picture that celebrates sex, drugs, rock and roll and freedom on the open road. That is what the 60s were about. For those who were there. Just in terms of his own personal background, he was obviously the son of henry fonda. We have heard from his sisterjane of henry fonda. We have heard from his sister jane about of henry fonda. We have heard from his sisterjane about having spent the last hours and days of him and the last hours and days of him and the joy of the last hours and days of him and thejoy of spending the last hours and days of him and the joy of spending some quality time with him as he lay dying. Was that a difficult relationship . Because in a sense, here he was coming up as the bright, young talent and i guess in the late 60s his father still had not drilling which is career. Well, i thinkl have interviewed jane fonda many times and she talked about her dad, he was a difficult guy. Even in his late 80s when they did, i cannot think of the name of the movie right now, on golden pond. Even in his late 80s he still suffered from what was called actors anxiety. If youre still ever going to wreck again. He was a difficult dad. But also, i think being race again. He was a difficult dad. But also, ithink being race in again. He was a difficult dad. But also, i think being race in the public, being part of, being the son of the daughter or disabling of a famous person, you sort of have to build in and connect some of personal armour, so build in and connect some of personal armour, so that it does not eat your store. I think he did admit style and grace, while bumping into stuff all the way. Which they all do. I think he came out a survivor ina lot do. I think he came out a survivor in a lot of ways. I think he had a lot of peace in the later part of his life. Thank you so much for talking to us about peter fonda. A life well lived and nice that people have good memories of him and lots of good things to say. Thank you very much. A postmortem examination in new york city has determined that the death of the disgraced us financierjeffrey epstein was suicide. The chief medical Examiners Office said that epstein, who was found dead in his cell in manhattan a week ago, had hanged himself. Epstein was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Our washington correspondent, chris buckler, has more. tx next a postmortem was carried out last weekend. The details were not immediately released, which led to a flurry of stories and speculation in the us media. The Washington Post at one stage reported that one of the bones broken injeffrey epsteins neck was more consistent with the case of somebody being strangled than a case of hanging. However, that is not always true in cases of older men, and the new york medical Examiners Office say that having looked at the results, they are convinced and have determined that he died as a result of a suicide. However, there are still many questions about the circumstances of his death. Particularly about irregularities at the prison itself, and also questions about why he was taken off suicide watch just days after an earlier attempt to kill himself. The Us Department ofjustice is also pursuing inquiries into some of epsteins associates, whom they believe abused and groomed underage girls. Now its time for a look at the weather with tomasz
