Longer spells, and more frequent in england and wales, especially Northern England but some will miss them, staying dry with sunshine, but strong winds widely gusting up to a0 mph and may be a5 mph for southern and western coasts. 20 at best for central and eastern parts of england but for many, just the high teens. 0n but for many, just the high teens. On monday this area of low pressure is beginning to pull away north and east but still a breezy day and a mix of sunshine and showers. Driest in central and southern england and south wales, but nowhere immune to a shower, and the showers more frequent in Northern Ireland, scotla nd frequent in Northern Ireland, scotland and Northern England, where theyre likely to be on the sharp side. Blowing through quickly and temperatures 17 22, warmest in central and eastern england. Lets come back to the jetstream central and eastern england. Wheel firm up on the Bank Holiday Weekend this time tomorrow. Goodbye. Hello, this is bbc news. We will be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First the headlines drug deaths in england and wales soar to their highest level since records began, 25 years ago. A seized iranian tanker held in gibraltar is to be released, despite a last minute plea by the us authorities. A level results are out. The number of students getting the top grade drops to its lowest for more than a decade. And missionjurassic. The biggest british led dinosaur hunt in decades hopes to uncover new species in the wyoming desert. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are sian griffiths, the education editor at the sunday times, and political commentator lance price. Lovely to have you both here. This is ourfinal edition. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. Four tory rebels have welcomed Jeremy Corbyns plan to become caretaker Prime Minister and avoid a no deal brexit. That is the lead story in tommorrows telegraph. Similarly, the times says hardline conservative remainer mps could favour supporting Jeremy Corbyn acting as a caretaker Prime Minister over accepting a no deal. 0n the same story, the guardian says the liberal democrats are under growing pressure to back Jeremy Corbyns plan. Also leading on brexit, the i reports that the snp have backed the labour leaders plans to remove borisjohnson from office. Nora quoirins grandfather has said there remain many Unanswered Questions surrounding her death. That is according to the daily mail. A father was stabbed to death after he intervened in a row involving a group of youths in newcastle, says the mirror. And the express reports that the number of criminals hauled before the courts has reached an all time low. Those are the front pages. Lets start off with our chats, and it is a political lead today. Rebel tories in the times. Yes, rebel tories hend support forJeremy Corbyn as interim Prime Minister, says the times. Hint support. Jeremy corbyn approached them suggesting one way of stopping an ideal brexit would be for there to be a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson for there to be a vote of no confidence in borisjohnson as Prime Minister no deal brexit. In him, Jeremy Corbyn, taking over as interim p. M. Seniortories him, Jeremy Corbyn, taking over as interim p. M. Senior tories have said they are happy to talk to him about the idea interim pm. This isa about the idea interim pm. This is a very long way from a done deal, and a lot of people have got very serious concerns about whether this could ever be made to happen. The numbers are very, very tight on both sides. It is absolutely true that borisjohnson has a nominal majority of only one. Even with the support of only one. Even with the support of the democratic unionists, so in theory four tory mps switching sides could mean toast for him. But it is never as simple as that. They would be some on the labour side who actually probably wouldnt be willing to support the idea. Some of the independents, and there are quite a few of them from defections from various parties or being thrown out of various parties for one reason or another, you need the whole lot to come together. The real story of the day is that, while Jeremy Corbyn has put this forward, he has had a warmer response than he might have expected, there are still deep divisions among those who want to stop no deal, and it is very far from certain this will come to fruition. Who are the tories . Four tories, dominic grieve, 0liver lettering, caroline spelman, and another, and also one who wasnt one of the four who Jeremy Corbyn wrote to has said he is open to installing mr corbyn in downing street. I think the story has moved a long way from this morning when it was being roundly dismissed as nonsense, it had zero chance of ever happening, this idea of mr corbyns. I think it is come by this evening to quite a consensus is come by this evening to quite a consensus and tomorrows front pages have not only the four tory rebels, but the greens, plaid cymru, the snp, and the liberal democrats who we re snp, and the liberal democrats who were so opposed to it, jo swinson is now saying she will agree agree to meet mr corbyn and discuss this possibility. The Daily Telegraph are also leading with this line. How far do you think they would really go to backing Jeremy Corbyn . Do you think they would really go to backing Jeremy Corbyn7|j do you think they would really go to backing Jeremy Corbyn . I mean, that is an extraordinary thought, isnt it . Obviously it would be the end of their careers as conservative members of parliament, and there is already a backlash certainly from dominic grieves Constituency Association saying that this is unconservative behaviour. Of course it is. It is almost unheard of for members of the governing party to vote with the opposition to bring down their own government. That is one reason why people still remain sceptical at the end of the day that this will actually come to pass. I think the important thing is that they will talk to mr corbyn, and they will talk to mr corbyn, and they will talk to mr corbyn, and they will talk to the other party leaders, to explore the ways in which no deal can be prevented. This is only one path towards that, and probably the least likely to succeed. Those talks need to happen, they also need to happen away from they also need to happen away from the front pages. We love it being on the front pages. We love it being on the front pages because we can sit here and talk about it all, but if this is really going to be successful, you cant negotiate something of this importance and this delicacy by giving letters to the papers and giving quotes to the bbc or to anybody else. If they are serious about it, it has to be behind closed doors, im afraid, to discuss what kind of deal they could countenance. An interesting few weeks politically. The same story but very much on the lib dem angle, lets turn to the guardian. The lib dem is under pressure to back corbyns effort to oustjohnson. This is a story about how the lib dems have been forced to move the position after their leader, jo swinson, dismissed this idea to back Jeremy Corbyn as a caretaker Prime Minister. She has been forced to move such a long wayjust in the space of 24 hours. She has been called childish by the shadow education secretary, the snp leader, nicola sturgeon, criticised her position as completely daft, and now jo swinson is sounding a much more positive note and she is saying that. She has actually released a letter to Jeremy Corbyn saying she would be prepared to meet him for talks and not ruling out the possibility of backing him as the leader of a caretaker government. Earlier we spoke to a correspondent who mentioned the option of different people at the helm. The idea is fine, he was saying. Maybe not mr corbyn. He mentioned harriet harman. What do you make of that as an alternative . I still think it is unlikely, but i think it is possibly more likely to get the kind of numbers you need to support it. I was talking about the independents earlier on, and some of them have left the labour party because they could not supportJeremy Corbyn. Some are sitting as independents, others have joined the some are sitting as independents, others havejoined the liberal democrats. They loatheJeremy Corbyn with a vengeance, and they would be much more likely to support a government of National Unity or whatever you want to call it, led by. Harriet harman has been mentioned, ken clarke, much more likely to support that and they would Jeremy Corbyn led government. However, the constitution although it is unwritten in this country is pretty clear that if the Prime Minister is defeated in a vote of no confidence, the first person you turn to to see if they can form a government is the leader of the 0pposition. Jeremy corbyn does have that right and i think it is right that right and i think it is right that he should be able to pursue it. The important thing is that if there isa the important thing is that if there is a vote of no confidence, it shouldnt be in black and white that alternative, what you are voting for, if you like, is a Jeremy Corbyn government. If he couldnt form government. If he couldnt form government you would need the option still on the table of someone else having a go. And you asked the question, would Jeremy Corbyn only be happy with that interim position, ultimately . Well, thats what he says. That is the thing he is saying, this would be a short Term Government and he would step down. Quote from a tory mp and former minister says a short term Jeremy Corbyn government is less damaging thana no corbyn government is less damaging than a no deal brexit. It is not a permanent position. Everyone needs some flexibility and willingness to compromise. You cant have red lines, we have seen the damage they have done in the brexit negotiations. You cant have red lines on the anti brexit negotiations, if you like. People have to be flexible to find a way through. And there was the video posted from Caroline Lucas from the greens willing her to come on board. So that is perhaps way she has changed her mind late in the day, or about to change her mind. Lets go to the telegraph, and the a levels. First of all, congratulations to the tens of thousands of teenagers who pick up their results today. They have worked incredibly hard. This is the final year of the new, very tough a levels, and they have done really, really well. Lots of interesting themes emerging today. A gorgeous picture on the front page of the telegraph, the normal picture that we have of the very pretty girls hugging each other, guaranteed to sell papers. But one of the stories that is emerging as the number of top grades have fallen to the lowest level for more than a decade. Now, that sounds bad, that the number of and a grades have fallen. We are seeing 98 pass rates in these exams, and the pass mark in one of the maths a levels was as low as 1a . A lot of people asking what do these a levels mean . If you have a pass mark 1a , if you can get an a with a5 , are these teenagers being misled into thinking they can cope with a University Degree when they got 85 of the paper wrong. Do employers understand what these a levels or what these grades mean . There are a lot of questions around these a levels today, which isnt to ta ke these a levels today, which isnt to take away from the hard work and very good performance of the kids who have had to sit the exams. Very good performance of the kids who have had to sit the examsm very good performance of the kids who have had to sit the exams. It is interesting, they havent put it as a very big headline, it is quite a good headline, grade expectations. These kids are being led to believe that, having done as well as they have, and they have got the grades, that they can then go to university. And we have seen a story elsewhere that we might go into about the way in which universities are bribing. Lets turn to the times, actually. 0ffer students. Lets turn to the times, actually. Offer students. Without going through the clearing process, and the length that some of the universities are going to try to in effect bribe students to come to them. Whenl effect bribe students to come to them. When i was applying to university it was completely the other way around. You were desperate to try and get in somewhere. Now they are being offered cash bonuses, bursaries, guaranteed accommodation, in some cases i think macbooks and other hardware to try and get them to come to this particular university and that particular university, and its all about the money. When students go to university, the money goes with them, and again, our students being bribed and encouraged to go down a path that not necessarily be the best one for them. Before we move on, we were discussing the uptake of apprenticeships, and those students not wanting to follow the route to university. Yes, i think apprenticeships is an interesting story because the government is very keen to see more apprenticeships and vocational qualifications and more teenagers doing vocational qualifications. We have merely one in two of our teenagers going to university. Many come out thousands of pounds in debt having paid is very expensive tuition fees, and they are not always finding jobs. They are not always finding jobs which have salaries which enable them to repay their debts. So not a good position to billion. And what the government would like to do is have a lot apprenticeships where employers are paying teenagers to train on thejob. We dont employers are paying teenagers to train on the job. We dont have enough of them. We need many, many more. But the other quite interesting and is there was a small rise this year again in what are called degree apprenticeships, where employers will pay you to go and do a degree and pay, train on thejob. I think if you can get one of those in clearing over the next few days, snapit in clearing over the next few days, snap it up. Lets turn to the express and millions of crime victims are denied justice. This is a story about the crisis thats been building over recent years in the criminal Justice Building over recent years in the criminalJustice System building over recent years in the criminal Justice System generally. Weve seen different symptoms of that crisis but these statistics show how serious its gotten. The numberof show how serious its gotten. The number of people actually getting into the criminalJustice System is at the lowest level on record. Given the numberof at the lowest level on record. Given the number of stories we talk about regularly in the paper review and elsewhere about what appears to be a terrifying rise in violent and other crimes throughout society, the fact fewer and fewer people seem to be going through the criminaljustice syste m going through the criminalJustice System is a very serious situation and it does, im afraid, come down to money. From the beginning of the Coalition Government in 2010, the cuts to the ministry ofjustice budget has been absolutely stringent and justice secretary after justice secretary has gone along with that. From the lowest level of magistrates courts right the way through the system, starved of resources. It means the pressure is then on everybody else within the police and criminal justice everybody else within the police and criminalJustice System everybody else within the police and criminal Justice System to everybody else within the police and criminalJustice System to try to stop cases coming to court, whether its through discouraging victims from pursuing criminal activity at all or the police simply saying, in so many cases, as weve seen, all or the police simply saying, in so many cases, as weve seen, were not even going to bother investigating. Can i lead you to the mirror, still on crime. What do we know about this story . A terrible story. This father, peter duncan, hes a solicitor. He was 52 and he was stabbed by we think, a group of quite young youths and some of them seem to be teenagers. He seemed to have intervened in some sort of altercation, and he is dead. He was heading home after work in newcastle city centre. I think seven people have been arrested. Its another one of these terrible stories. He was stabbed . Hit with a screwdriver in an unprovoked attack after heading home from work in newcastle city centre. Were going to finish with the telegraph, did either of you see the telegraph, did either of you see the advert for the chickenpox saying knife crime . Rightly criticised as being heavy handed and potentially racist approach. There was a trial that showed some level of success, but it seemed an extraordinary way of going about it. Very quickly, the Daily Telegraph, i initially thought this was something to do with the wrong trousers. This is a fabulous story. Scientists say theyve created a pairof Scientists Say theyve created a pair of robo shorts that could help people having difficulty walking. It is some sort of x0 suit and it aids movement when you put it on. It was initially to help troops with backpacks to electronically move your legs and it could help the frail and elderly and it could the adapted so when old people have difficulty walking they could put on their robo shorts i guess and march up their robo shorts i guess and march up the hill. I imagine some people already do with that im worried ed could go against the government obesity strategy, people think they can get these things and they dont have to worry about staying slim. We could report on it from that angle thank you very much sian and bill answer, thanks very much, its been fantastic. Sian and lance. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. It is all there for you seven days a week at bbc. Co. Uk papers, and if you miss the programme any evening, you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. Thank you, sian and lance. Goodbye. Good evening. Heres your latest sports news. England with plenty to do if theyre to level their ashes series after being bowled on the first days play of the second test at lords, australia trailing by 228 runs having lost a wicket late in the day. It could have been a lot worse for the hosts after being put into bat. They lost opener jason roy for a duck. There was a 50 for rory burns to follow his century in the first test, but a brilliant catch from Cameron Bancroft got rid of him. And england were 138 6 at one point, before some runs down the order, including a half century forjonny bairstow, got them to 258 all out. The wicket of david warner to stuart broad before the close left australia on 30 1. Competitive total. Like i said, we could have eked out a few more and got a few more and extended it out at the end but i think its day one and right in amongst it. Batted a few balls so far in this test series and theyre few balls so far in this test series and they re looking few balls so far in this test series and theyre looking at different ways of getting me out. I think nathan lyon ran past me this morning and mentioned it within about three balls. I was well versed in what i was prepared for getting. But, yeah, its just a good was prepared for getting. But, yeah, itsjust a good battle, isnt it . Yellow weve got to come out tomorrow and make sure we do the basics with the bat well and back for a long period of time. Theyve got a world class rolling attack, we know that, its going to be challenging but fingers crossed our batters can dig deep and if we can batters can dig deep and if we can bat a couple of big partnerships and that a long period of time, hopefully well get in a decent position. The head coach of the scotland Womens National team shelley kerr has spoken of her regrets following a row with players at the end of the world cup in france. Bbc scotland has learned some players were left in tears at a team meeting the day after they were knocked out of the tournament. Kerr admits she, along with other members of her backroom team, had been drinking with dinner before the meeting but says it was during down time and the squad is now fully behind her. For me, some discussions, and that happens in football and High Performance at times. As i say, on reflection youve got to look at that and i look at that as the head coach being responsible and may be the timing because of the emotions, certainly you look at the circumstances being so unique. Theres nothing in any manual, whether its from a psychology perspective, whether its performance that can equip you for that and thats definitely something ive reflected on a lot. Runaway Super League Leaders st helens warmed up for next weeks challenge cup final with a brilliant second half display to see off leeds rhinos 36 20 at headingley. After a much drier day on thursday with some sunshine, things going downhill on friday. Weve got this low pressure from the atlantic sitting into the north west of uk over the next few days. At the moment its pushing ahead these weather fronts, moment its pushing ahead these weatherfronts, thickening cloud and bringing outbreaks from the west shallowly but surely and that rain on the friday will be over the hills and could see localised flooding slowly but surely. Heres our rain band with some rain heavy at times and we could get sharp showers following on behind but eventually it will brighten up in scotland and more readily in Northern Ireland in the afternoon with sunshine. The winds will be quite gross with that rain, strong or even gale force around some western coastal areas and where we get the sunshine in scotla nd and where we get the sunshine in scotland and Northern Ireland, temperatures could poke up to 21 or 22. A wet day for the england and wales with sharp showers in scotland and Northern Ireland well into denied. The rain moves from the south east of england with clear skies following into the night. 12 or 13 further north. For saturday, were going to find most of the showers coming into scotland and Northern Ireland. Heavier ones for western scotland. A few showers for western scotland. A few showers for ingrown and wales, not many getting through to eastern areas, good chance of staying dry here and those temperatures probably back up to 21 or 22 degrees at best. Notice wet weather coming into the north west of scotland and with the wet weather close by low pressure close by it will be a wet weekend here and there is the threat of the weather front coming into the south west on wednesday Night Saturday night. That should have cleared by sunday morning and were into the sunshine and showers mixed. And a few more showers in england and wales on sunday but the main focus will be scotland and Northern Ireland, some heavy and thundery with the wind is picking up on sunday with fresh winds touching gale force in one or two places makes.
