An uneasy calm has descended on hong kong airport, after pro democracy protestors severely disrupted flights for a second day. There were angry confrontations just before midnight between Security Forces and demonstrators staging a sit in. Protestors used barricades to stop police forcing their way into the building. As of wednesday, Hong Kongs Airport Authority says its obtained an interim injunction to restrain people from unlawfully and wilfully obstructing operations. Our correspondentjonathan head was at the airport and sent this this was the day a self styled Democracy Movement came close to mob violence. Fearful of infiltrators, the protesters seized individuals they believed were undercover chinese officers. With emotions so raw it was hard to restrain them. For a second day they had occupied the airport and shut it down. Luggage trolleys rammed together to make effective barricades. Thousands filled the departure hall, mingling with bewildered passengers whose flights were no longer leaving, and at times trying to win their understanding. What started as opposition to a controversial extradition bill has evolved into demands for fully democratic government in hong kong and for police accountability. A roar from the crowd and another suspected infiltrator had gone down. It was a struggle for medics to evacuate him. A delegation of police was allowed into the airport. This officer pleading for cooperation. But the bellowing fury of these young protesters drove them back out of the terminal. That was followed by lines of riot Police Moving towards the doors. It sent them scurrying for more trolleys. Outside, this officers attempt to arrest someone backfired badly and he had to raise his gun to fend off his attackers. As you can see, they are building barricades at the moment at the entrance to the terminal. We have seen riot police outside, they are trying to stop them coming in. Have a look down there, there are still passengers arriving at this airport. How are the police going to storm this building . While all this was going on, stranded travellers sat among the empty check in desks in one of asias most important transport hubs. Losing control of it is a humiliation for the Hong Kong Government. More significantly, it is a humiliation for china, which has warned that its patience is running out. Jonathan head, bbc news, hong kong airport. Victor gao is director of the China National association of International Studies he worked as an interpreter for previous chinese leaders and has close contacts with the current government in beijing. His view is that the hong kong protestors are breaking the law and should be treated as criminals. The situation in hong kong involving so much rioting and violence, and damage to the rule of law is fast reaching a tipping point. Lots of filling elegies have been committed and i think something needs to be done to apply the rule of law to those criminals who have committed such heinous crimes. Not only on the hong kong airport but in many other places in hong kong. Estimation of rule of law as a top priority right now. Up to now, i think the whole responsibility is firmly rested on the shoulder of the Hong Kong Government and the Hong Kong Police. I hope this will be sufficient to restore order and the two hong kong but if its proved to be insufficient, Something Else needs to be done, including participation by the central government. I dont think its the chinese troops, why should mildura be involved in this . I think Police Forces in china can be mobilised and sent to work in hong kong when for example, at the request of Hong Kong Government, or to be decided in the sole discretion of the National PeoplesCongress Standing committee. All this is not against the basic law, it is purely by the rules of the basic law. Claudia mo is a member of the Legislative Council shes in our bureau in hong kong now. Thank you very much, indeed, for your time. Do you think this time will last . Would you expect to happen next . To start with, i have to say that our young protesters have apologised for what happened at the hong kong airport earlier, not just verbally, i could see them standing at the airport, along some of the route and bowing, complete with placards. What theyve done is obviously wrong, it is the point of stopping a flight passengers from departure . And how does that help the hong kong cause . I because of fighting for freedom is the hong kong cause . I because of fighting forfreedom is in hong kong. Then, things are escalating, plenty of stress and panicking among the protesters, mainly young people, i was at the airport previously, several times, it was all peaceful, sit ins only, they were chanting slogans and they were giving out pamphlets only but lost. What happened to us last night our time, we wouldnt know when i said panicking, because the Hong Kong Police force has actually admitted that they have offices masquerading as members of the protesting crowd and the genuine protesters wouldnt know the person next to you, as a Police Officer or some undercover, oi Police Officer or some undercover, or some decoy or something they incited to do what they did, we would never know. But i hope the young will have than the lesson. Can i ask you one thing . A couple of particular points to pick up on, i suppose it has drawn attention, hasnt it, to the cause of fully democratic government in hong kong and more police accountability. But particularly when you see those pictures of chinese Security Forces, convoys pictures of chinese Security Forces, co nvoys a nd pictures of chinese Security Forces, convoys and military Police Gathering in the audit city, what do you think the government in beijing plans to do . Do expected to come in, if they do, what happens in . plans to do . Do expected to come in, if they do, what happens in . I would wish that it is stilljust a threat because this is more than modern day. We are expecting the humanity. You could not, you simply, for any government, you simply cannot use military means to crack down on civilian unrest. This is 2019. Not 30 years ago in beijing. And i think they would keep using the local police force as the proxy for the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army and the things would just become worse and worse in the coming days. Ijust dont know how this is going to play out. Do you see any chance at all of the demands more democratic government being realised . The demands more democratic government being realised . That is almost like a wishful thinking. As of today, the young are saying that the protesting, they are protesting, they want to fight for hope at least. Both sides are standing very firm, stanley the ground, they are not going to budge in any way. So how is it going to end . I hope beijing will try to understand that hong kong is not just some teenager as they would regard us, who would you has become disobedience and would simply need some discipline. They are the youngin need some discipline. They are the young in particular, fighting for their hong kong and their future. Its basic values like the rule of law, a genuine democracy, genuine freedoms, everything. So can we talk . Can we talk . In beijing ask to do something about bridging the gap . Can beijing ask . Do something about bridging the gap . Can beijing ask . Thank you very much, indeed. Lets get some of the days other news. 22 american states and seven cities are suing the Trump Administration for loosening restrictions on coal fired power plants. They argue that new measures approved by the Environmental Protection agency will extend the life of dirtier coal plants and wont lower Carbon Emissions. The president has spent millions propping up the coal industry, which is being undercut by the falling cost of Renewable Energy and gas from fracking. A second day of losses for argentinas peso, since the electoral success of centre left candidate Alberto Fernandez in sundays primary elections. Not as dramatic, though, as monday, because the central bank intervened after a morning session of big losses. The gains for mr fernandez suggest he will win 0ctobers general election. 0ne Analyst Company has suggested that makes a sovereign default more likely. The opera singer, placido domingo, has been accused of pressuring women into having sexual encounters with him over the past 30 years. Eight singers and a dancer allege he misused his celebrity status to forcibly kiss and fondle them. The spanish tenor, whos 78, says the allegations are inaccurate and that he believed all the relationships were welcome and consensual. President trump says he has delayed the introduction of a 10 tariff on some chinese imports until mid december to prevent hurting american customers during their Holiday Shopping. Earlier this month, trump had announced that tariffs on 300 billion worth of chinese imports would take effect in september. But now certain goods including laptops, cell phones and items of clothing have been spared. Speaking in pennsylvania earlier, mr trump spoke about trade and the strength of american industry. And we are doing well, and we are fighting against a lot of countries that have taken advantage of us for many years, but they are not doing it so much anymore, and in a little period of time they wont be doing it at all anymore. They have taken advantage of this country. Heather long, economics correspondent with the washington post, told me why mr trump chose to delay the rollout. Retailers in the United States have bombarded the white house, saying that these tariffs go into effect, all them on september one, it would be a huge blow to consumers, it would raise prices, people would not go out and shop as much as they normally do, and it would be a terrible Holiday Shopping season in the United States. President trump appears to have been reliably spooked by all of this, and decided to delay about half the tariffs, about half the 300 billion wont go into effect until december 15th, which basically meant they were not in place for the Holiday Shopping period. So this reaction is more about domestic politics than really what the president is characterising it . It seems to be an admission for the first time that this does have an impact on the american consumer. Thats right. Thats one of the most momentous things that happened today. President trump has insisted for months that china is bearing the full brunt of these tariffs, that the chinese pay his tariffs. Today we saw both his actions and in his words, was an admission that these tariffs do impact consumer prices, they do raise consumer prices. And that americans do have to pay at least some of his tariffs at the end of the day. That is a big change from what weve seen. Just briefly, if you dont mind, the president does seem to be picking winners and losers, what is the rationale between which goods are hit and which was a not . Well, a cynic would tell you its who has the best lobby. If you look down the list, for instance, bibles were one of the few items that are now totally exempt from any tariffs in september or december. Other items like golf shoes, certain types of golf shoes, wont be hit until december others will get a tariff in september. A post mortem is being carried out in malaysia, after police found the body of 15 year old nora quoirin, who went missing last week. The teenager, who had learning difficulties, was on holiday with her family when she disappeared from the resort where they were staying. Her body was found just over two kilometres away in the seremban jungle. Its not clear when the results will be released. A few minutes ago, the lawyer for the family spoke to reporters outside the hospital where the post mortem is taking place. He expressed the familys gratidtude to everyone who took part in the search efforts, and explained how the family is coping. Of course, it is very highly traumatic, this situation. The loss ofa traumatic, this situation. The loss of a daughter, a child, and naturally levels are very high. We will bring you more information on that as soon as we have it. President trump delays a 10 tariff on some chinese imports to avoid Christmas Shopping price hikes. The us attorney general william barr has ordered staff changes at the new yorkjail where the financier, jeffrey epstein, died while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Epstein was found on saturday after apparently hanging himself. A warden has been moved and two officers have been placed on leave. Joining me now is aviva stahl, shes an Investigative Reporter for the gothamist and has written extensively on situation at the prison. She joins me from new york. I know you have done a lot of research on this jail, inner peace from last year you had some very harsh for this jail. Tell us more. For my story i interviewed about 12 former prisoners and some defence attorneys alongside human rights advocates, and i found attorneys alongside human rights advocates, and ifound that prisoners are forced to live in vermin infested cells, where toilets overflow vermin infested cells, where toilets ove rflow a nd vermin infested cells, where toilets overflow and people are forced to defecate in bags or cleanup faeces with their hands. They are denied healthcare, and with their hands. They are denied healthca re, and they with their hands. They are denied healthcare, and they are forced to deal with overcrowding, understaffing, and as they describe it, lazy, corruptand understaffing, and as they describe it, lazy, corrupt and sometimes violent guards, who are supposed to be charged with protecting them. Be charged with protecting them. Be clear, this is the jail where people are held awaiting trial, not where people have been sentenced. Is it correct that inmates are the ones who do the suicide watch . It correct that inmates are the ones who do the suicide watch7m depends. Sometimes it is detainees and sometimes guards. But it is quite possible that some things would be missed, to put it mildly . Definitely, but i think understaffing and overcrowding also play a big role, and it is notjust here where this happens. Suicide is the leading cause of death in jails in the us. We need to seejeffrey epsteins apparent suicide is more indicative of the problem that is widespread, rather than a special case. This is something that could have a massively psychological impact on an inmate, this situation . Some people have described to me as sole negating, another said it was worse than guantanamo bay. If you look at testimony from former prisoners it is really quite horrifying. Where do you expect the investigation to go . Do you feel authorities are ticking the boxes because epstein is dead or will there be more investigation . because epstein is dead or will there be more investigation . I think only time will tell, but whatever happens, conditions at mcc need to change for everybody, and notjust the celebrities, like el chapa, who was also held at mcc, or people like jeffrey epstein. Those responsible for prosecuting these cases, they have known about this for a long time, and it is their responsibility that this hasnt changed. Clinical trials using a new type of treatment for the ebola virus have proved highly effective in the democratic republic of the congo. An outbreak has killed at least 18 hundred people in the drc, in the past year. But scientists working with the World Health Organisation say the new treatment can cure 90 of infected patients. Gaius kowene reports. Ebola has devastated parts of the democratic republic of the congo. Contracting it is often seen as a death sentence. New trials suggested can treated successfully. Translation god has healed me and my child. The disease is gone. My husband fell ill, and we thought it was just a normal illness only to be told it is ebola. Then i got ill and was in hospital, but as you can see 110w was in hospital, but as you can see now i am fine. Those who say it was not ebola, i inform you that it was. One who has not been ill from the virus can deny it, but i confirm it was there. It spreads quicker than any other disease, it can kill very quickly but it also can be healed. Four drugs were trialed on patients in the democratic republic of the congo, where there is a major outbreak of the virus. It showed that 90 of people can survive if treated early with the most effective drugs. The impact is enormous, because in these outbreaks we have resistance of the population, because they consider a Health Centre a place to die. So people who go there and come back to the community because of the efficacy of the treatment, they will not hide their patients at home, they will bring them for treatment. It is very important to break that cycle of suspicion. It is said patients can start feeling better within an hour of taking the treatment. So, the treatment could save lives. But if it is really going to have an impact, it will have to change minds too. Its still a few weeks until a major summit on Climate Change at the United Nations in new york, but Greta Thunberg is already packed, because the teenage campaigner is going to sail across the atlantic on a zero carbon journey. Our chief environment correspondent Justin Rowlatt has been speaking to her about the voyage. How do you get to new york without any co2 emissions . This is how. But Greta Thunberg isnt anxious. I might feel a bit seasick, and its not going to be comfortable, but that i can live with. The malizia is all about speed. Look at her, shes just a giant sail attached to a superlight carbon fibre hull. She basically bounces through the wave, sometimes dives right through them. It is a very. Woah . Very rough ride, its a very wet ride, to be honest, im not sure that i could take two weeks of this. It is thrilling but it wont be comfortable, one the skipper boris hermann. So, no washing, no shower. We just put clothes on and we keep them for two weeks. There is no fridge, no kitchen, no heating and no privacy. So here you have your little intimate corner. You can hide here and use the bucket. And look, poos only, please. But there are also no Carbon Emissions. The entire journey will be under sail and all the electricity will be generated by solar panels and turbines. If were honest, one person giving up flying doesnt make any difference in a world of eight billion people. So what is the point . I mean, the point, ithink, is to sort of create an opinion. If i stop flying you dont only reduce your own Carbon Footprint but also that sends a signal to other people around you that, i mean, the Climate Crisis is a real thing and that also pushes a political movement. But its been a year since the 16 year old began her climate strikes and Carbon Emissions have continued to rise. She plans to encourage World Leaders to take more urgent action in new york. And despite the privations, she is looking forward to the trip. I think it will feel good in a way to be just alone with those on the boat and the ocean. The voyage will take two weeks. Gretas team say they havent yet planned how shes going to get back from america. Justin rowlatt, bbc news, plymouth. And you can get in touch with me and most of the team on twitter im bbcmikeembley. Pretty cloudy day ahead of us on wednesday. Rain on and off pretty much anywhere in the uk. There might even be one or two rumbles of thunder across the midlands, east anglia, lincolnshire as well. By thursday, the weather will improve. But this is what it looks like right now. This is the weather system, this is all the cloud thats basically been heading our way through the course of the night. Clearer skies for a time in the east, but i think from the morning onwards its looking pretty damp if not wet across the south west of england, wales, just about lancashire, the lake district. Northern ireland getting a few spots of rain too, as well as the western isles. But its not cold, its quite mild in fact. These are south westerly winds bringing some humid air, so temperatures early in the morning in plymouth about 1k. Well match that in cardiff. But nippy in western and eastern scotland that is, in rural spots temperatures could be two or three degrees above freezing. But quickly its going to cloud over. So look at all that all of that cloud across the uk on wednesday. On and off rain. Its not one solid area of rain that will be sweeping across the country, its sort of like bits of rain, so it will come and go, hit and miss really through the afternoon. And then actually later in the day, it looks as though some of these Western Areas could brighten up and thats because the weather front will be pulling away towards the east. Then come thursday, we are inbetween weather systems, one out there in the atlantic ready for the weekend, but on thursday, before it arrives, the weathers looking absolutely fine. So after a cloudy, damp wednesday, thursday, more sunshine on the way. Temperatures will get up to 23 degrees because therell be more sun around, obviously, even nudging up to 20 or sojust about across northern england. I think for stornoway, no more than around 15. Now, heres the low pressure that swings in off the atlantic on friday. A lot of isobars there, so, you guessed it, the winds will be pretty strong as well, gusting to around 40mph around these western and southern coasts. Now the rain probably wont reach the east of the country until a lot later in the day, so that means places like say brighton, london, norwich, hull, may actually get away with a fairly decent first half to friday. The rain may not reach london until friday night, for example. But for wales and the south west, its looking pretty wet on friday and the temperatures only around, say, 17 19 degrees at least for most of us. Then friday night, that low pressure continues to make its Journey Towards the east and come saturday and sunday, its going to turn very blustery in the uk. Gusts of wind in some areas could be approaching 50mph. So another very windy weekend potentially on the way. Bye bye. In the search efforts, and explained how the family is coping. This is bbc news, the headlines after days of violent clashes, sit ins by protesters, and hundreds of cancelled flights, hong kong airport, one of asias busiest transport hubs, seems to have calmed down. Authorities used new powers to get flights departing and arriving largely on schedule. President trump has delayed introducing a 10 tariff on some chinese imports until mid december.
