Person to walk the length of chinas Yangtze River , the longest river in asia. Its one oclock in the morning in london and 8 00am in singapore and in hong kong, where the International Airport has been the scene of further, violent confrontations between demonstrators and police. Officers tried to storm the terminal building only to withdraw after facing heavy resistance. At one point, a suspected chinese official was held hostage by protesters. The trouble has done nothing to quell fears of chinese intervention. President trump has claimed Us Intelligence told him that beijing is moving troops to its border with hong kong. Jonathan head reports. This was the day a self styled Democracy Movement came close to mob violence. Fearful of infiltrators, the protesters seized individuals they believed were undercover chinese officers. With emotions so raw it was hard to restrain them. For a second day they had occupied the airport and shut it down. Luggage trolleys rammed together to make effective barricades. Thousands filled the departure hall, mingling with bewildered passengers whose flights were no longer leaving, and at times trying to win their understanding. What started as opposition to a controversial extradition bill has evolved into demands for fully democratic government in hong kong and for police accountability. A roar from the crowd and another suspected infiltrator had gone down. It was a struggle for medics to evacuate him. A delegation of police was allowed into the airport. This officer pleading for cooperation. But the bellowing fury of these young protesters drove them back out of the terminal. That was followed by lines of riot Police Moving towards the doors. It sent them scurrying for more trolleys. Outside, this officers attempt to arrest someone backfired badly and he had to raise his gun to fend off his attackers. As you can see, they are building barricades at the moment at the entrance to the terminal. We have seen riot police outside, they are trying to stop them coming in. Have a look down there, there are still passengers arriving at this airport. How are the police going to storm this building . While all this was going on, stranded travellers sat among the empty check in desks in one of asias most important transport hubs. Losing control of it is a humiliation for the Hong Kong Government. More significantly, it is a humiliation for china, which has warned that its patience is running out. Jonathan head, bbc news, hong kong airport. Carrie lam has accused protestors of pushing the city into an abyss. I asked victor gao, the director of the China National association of international studies, why ms lam doesnt withdraw the extradition bill that started it all. First of all, i think carrie lam is absolutely right. The situation in hong kong involving so much rioting and violence, and damage to the rule of law is fast reaching a tipping point. Something needs to be done, either by the Hong Kong Government itself or in conjunction with the Central Government. I think the extradition bill, as you called it, is no longer an issue at all, and the demonstrators are really demanding other things, including the overthrow of the Hong Kong Government, which is completely not to be accepted. Restoration of rule of law is top priority right now in hong kong. So you are saying that beijing is in charge and the hong kong leadership has no independence and no autonomy and has no say . No, just the opposite. I think the chinese Central Government is strictly abiding by the basic law, and up until now is leaving the management of Hong Kong Affairs to the Hong Kong Government. And beijing has expressed complete trust and confidence in carrie lam and her government as well as the Hong Kong Police. I hope they will be able to do thejob and bring law and order back to hong kong and restore normalcy to hong kong, and prevent such great breakdown of social order in hong kong. But victor, a protest over the past few months have shown that these demonstrations will not let up until the extradition bill is withdrawn and carrie lam resigns, and the freedoms are returned to the hong kong people. First of all, the demonstrations, as you called it, many of which are illegal demonstrations, as classified by hong kong law, they constitute illegal gatherings and also lots of violence and chaos and rioting have been committed, and hong kong airport has become such a huge crime scene. Lots of illegalities have been committed, and i think something needs to be done to apply the rule of law to those criminals who have committed such heinous crimes, not only on the hong kong airport but in many other places in hong kong. Restoration of rule of law is of top priority right now. Anything for greater democracy can be left to another day without rule of law there will be no greater democracy. Beijing has already said that these protesters are terrorism beijing has already said that these protests are sprouts of terrorism and they will deal with them with an iron fist. Will we see military and police crossing the border and implementing this rule of law . Up until now i think the whole responsibility has firmly rested on the shoulders of the Hong Kong Government and the Hong Kong Police. I hope this will be sufficient to restore order and law to hong kong, but if it is proved to be insufficient Something Else needs to be done, including participation by the Central Government. But there are already chinese troops on the border between hong kong and china. Why should military be involved in this . I think Police Forces in the rest of china can be mobilised, and sent to work in hong kong at the request of the Hong Kong Government or to be decided in the sole discretion of the National Peoples Congress Standing committee. All of this is not against the basic law, it is purely by the rule of basic law. President trump says he has delayed the introduction of a 10 tariff on some chinese imports till mid december. Its to avoid having an impact on Christmas Shopping. The higher tax would have made a range of goods, including laptops, cell phones and certain items of clothing, more expensive from next month. Mrtrump maintained he was optimistic about a trade deal with china. And we are doing well, and we are fighting against a lot of countries that have taken advantage of us for many years, but they are not doing it so much anymore, and in a little. But they are not doing it so much anymore, and in a little period of time they wont be doing it at all anymore. They have taken advantage of this country. President trump. Staying with the us and trade the british prime minister, borisjohnson, has said he expects a tough old haggle with the United States on a post brexit trade deal. Pakistan has requested a meeting of the Un Security Council over indias decision to revoke the special status of jammu and kashmir. People have been told to leave their village near a missile testing site in the archangelsk region of russia. Its where an explosion killed five scientists last week. Some reports say the explosion was linked to russias development of a Nuclear Powered cruise missile, as Sarah Rainsford reports. The speculation is that the missile that was being tested, was one that nato calls skyfall. If that is true it would be one of the missiles that Vladimir Putin himself touted as one of the great new super weapons that russia was developing, so this is an embarrassing moment for russia in that sense. Donald trump has tweeted about the missile, saying that the us has similar but more advanced technology. Russian developments are still claimed to be at a higher level than other countries have achieved. Bodies of those killed we re achieved. Bodies of those killed were buried earlier this week, and security agencies have said that the best way they could be remembered is for this work to continue. Lets get more on our top story, the protest in hong kong. Ben bland, no relation, is speaking to us now. Where do you think if things go from here . We have seen the focus on the airport for the past two days, but where is the obvious next step, do you think . I think there is no obvious next step. What we have seen over the past few weeks, in fact several months, is a cycle of escalation, where the government and police push back, democracy activists and others in hong kong push back, and thingsjust keep getting hotter and hotter, which is very u nfortu nate. Getting hotter and hotter, which is very unfortunate. It doesnt really ultimately serve any purpose, but there is this concerning ideology on each side. In situations like this we tend to look for emerging trends of behaviour and patterns, and on chinas side we have seen things ramping up, a warning about responding with an iron fist, then these military manoeuvres near the border. That looks, doesnt it, that china is increasingly prepared to clampdown on this in a tougher and tougher way as it progresses. think this has been a careful, graduated stepping up of rhetoric from the chinese government. Initially they were censoring reports about the protests in hong kong, and they slowly warned more and more about the dangers of what is happening in hong kong. Hong kong police have hit baqarta, protesters have taken on a more and more assertive approach, so i think it is clear that beijing wants to signal that it wants to do something, but i think that is partly because they dont want to have to take this Nuclear Option of sending in Chinese Police or army, and by warning people that this may happen they are hoping to force them to back down, so hoping to force them to back down, so it is a dangerous game of chicken right now, and i think it is important to understand that the way beijing sees this thing is different from the way outsiders see it and it is quite hard to put yourself inside the logic of an authoritarian regime ata time the logic of an authoritarian regime at a time like this. When we watch the press conferences held by hong kongs chief executive, carrie lam, they seem to get more and more uncomfortable, and it seems that at points she is either unwilling or unable to answer questions put to her. I think that represents the pressure in hong kong we have seen growing over the past few years, whether government is increasingly caught between beijing, which is ever more assertive and wants the Hong Kong Government to do as its told, and the hong kong people, who are more and more frustrated with the pressure on their freedoms and authority, and carrie lam projector sort of living embodiment of this tension. She has to do this press conference is to try to keep up the facade that hong kong has media freedom, that it is open and international, but at the same time she is unable to respond to even basic questions, which makes many people wonder how much autonomy the government of hong kong really has. It certainly seems that for any Big Decisions now, ageing will have to be calling the shots. At the same time it is still useful for the be calling the shots. At the same time it is still usefulfor the Hong Kong Government and the Hong Kong Police be taking advantage of these issues on the ground because it keeps it a local problem for beijing, rather than making it a fully National Problem when the Chinese Party is fighting many other battles, such as the trade war with donald trump. A british man has become the first person to walk the length of chinas Yangtze River overcoming subzero temperatures, wolves and altitude sickness and the 28 year olds not even that keen on walking. At 6,400 kilometres, the yangtze is the worlds third longest river and the longest in asia ash dyke began the journey at the rivers source, more than 5,000m above sea level on the tibetan plateau. Along the way, he crossed the famous three gorges, site of the Worlds Largest hydroelectric dam and power station. The journey took him 352 days to reach the sea at chinas largest city, shanghai. And when ash joined us from shanghai, he told us what motivated him to make such an extraordinaryjourney. So this is my profession, ive been doing this for the past ten years, and ive always been fascinated with china and wanted. It was pretty much the biggest thing i could find that hadnt yet been done, from west to east of the country as well, so i was just hooked instantly. Tell us about some of the tough moments that you faced during that walk. Yeah, so, really tough was actually the people that were joining me along the way. We had 16 people altogether, and 10 people had to be evacuated due to fear of wildlife, altitude sickness, injury, but as well i had to be aware of the wolves, the bears, the altitude, of course. And the temperatures, as you mentioned, 20 to 45 degrees celsius, and the floodings and landslides the challenges were never ending. Im sure there were many tough moments. What were the ones that stood out in your mind as the most magical moments of thejourney . Well, you know what, i think probably this being one of the worlds most interactive. I was able to share on my instagram ash . Dykes and the amount of people that were just supporting and evenjoining. I opened it up, it wasjust immense. Even at the finish, Live Streaming to millions, having over 100 people cross the finish line. So i would say it was just the people who support of the people who joined me and the locals throughout. And there were some really nice moments i think weve got some video of you dancing and swimming perhaps. Tell us a bit about those moments. Yes, we filmed for an International Tv documentary. This wasnt a speed record, so i was really trying to enjoy my time. I would take a week or two weeks out at different communities or cities to soak up the local culture and get involved with the locals and what they do. So ive done all sorts of madness, from eating pasha worms, which is a delicacy, to blowing pigs liver, which is also a different delicacy, and being able to share these and capture them on footage with everyone else in and out of china. And just briefly, ash, whats your next adventure . What are you planning . The supports been massive. Ill be releasing my second book Mission Impossible but i think my next trip will be here in china. Ash dyke just teasing us with a hint of what his next expedition might be. Would you make an epic walk like a . Be. Would you make an epic walk like a . Ash. Too much effort stop in 352 days of walking ill leave that to you. We are good from studio to studio you have been watching newsday. Im ben bland in london. And im rico hizon in singapore. Stay with us. The war on almonds why an ongoing trade dispute between the us and india is threatening americas nut farmers. And an update, these are live pictures at hong kongs International Airport. Flights departing largely on schedule on wednesday morning a day after pro democracy protesters brought the airport to a standstill. Things looking rather calmer as the day gets started on wednesday. Thats it from me s addition of newsday. From rico in singapore and me in london, thanks for watching thats it for this addition of newsday. Pretty cloudy day ahead of us on wednesday. Rain on and off pretty much anywhere in the uk. There might even be one or two rumbles of thunder across the midlands, east anglia, lincolnshire as well. By thursday, the weather will improve. This is what it looks like right now. This is the weather system, this is all the cloud thats basically been heading our way through the course of the night. Clearer skies for a time in the east, but i think from the morning onwards its looking pretty damp if not wet across the south west of england, wales, just about lancashire, the lake district. Northern ireland getting a few spots of rain too as well as the western isles. But its not cold, its quite mild in fact. These are south westerly winds bringing some humid air, so temperatures in plymouth in the morning about 1k, matching that in cardiff, but in western and eastern scotland in rural spots temperatures could be two or three degrees above freezing. But quickly it will cloud over. Look at all that cloud in the uk across wednesday. On and off rain. Its not one solid area of rain sweeping across the country, its sort of like bits of rain so it will come and go, hit and miss through the day. Later in the day, it looks as though some Western Areas could brighten up because the weather front will pull away towards the east. Then come thursday, we are in between weather systems, one out there in the atlantic ready for the weekend, but on thursday before it arrives, the weathers looking absolutely fine. So after a cloudy, damp wednesday, thursday, more sunshine on the way. Temperatures will get up to 23 degrees because therell be more sun around and even nudging up to 20 just about across Northern England i think. Stornoway, no more than 15. Heres the low pressure swinging in off the atlantic on friday. Lots of isobars, so the winds will be pretty strong, gusting to around 40mph around these western and coasts. The rain probably wont reach the east of the country until a lot later in the day, so that means places like brighton, london, norwich, hull, will get away with a decent first half to friday. The rain might not reach london until friday night, for example, but for wales and the south west, looking pretty wet on friday and the temperatures only around 17 19 at least for most of us. Friday night, that low pressure continues to make its journey to the east and come saturday and sunday, its going to turn blustery in the uk with gusts of wind in some areas could be approaching 50mph. Another very windy weekend potentially on the way. Bye bye. Im ben bland with bbc world news. Our top story there have been clashes between riot police and demonstrators at hong kongs International Airport where flights were disrupted for a second day running.
