Its not how many of us would choose to cool ourselves down on a hot summers day, sitting in a box of ice for over two hours. But thats what extreme athlete Josef Koeberl did yesterday in vienna, as he broke the world record for the longest time submerged in ice he lasted two hours, eight minutes and 47 seconds. 0ne austrian newspaper described him as having the genes of the polar bear. 0bviously. Better him than us this year the United States has repeatedly made International Headlines with a series of mass shootings. The latest incidents in el paso and ohio took place within 2a hours, leaving 31 people dead and have once again intensified the debate over gun control. Lets speak now to gun campaigner andy parker whose daughter was shot dead in 2015. Many thanks for your time this morning. The circumstances of your daughters murder was horrific. She was a local Television Reporter and she was shot dead while reporting live on air. Remind our audience what happened. Thank you all in the ukfor what happened. Thank you all in the uk for watching this this early in the morning. Alison wasjust uk for watching this this early in the morning. Alison was just doing herjob. She was reporting at Smith Mountain lake, doing an interview with the local chamber of commerce head, and a disgruntled employee ambushed her and her cameraman and killed them on live television. A good part of me died that day. Understandably. Was there any reason at all given for him targeting your daughter and the crew that day . Not really, other than i think he had some manifesto that he was doing this in retaliation for the shooter in charleston, which occurred a month prior. So he felt some affinity, for whatever warped reason, with other people involved in incidents like this. I know you have said you almost had a choice at this point in your life, to curl up and hide away from the world or to try to do something about it, and tell us how you have committed your life to trying to change gun laws in america. It occurred to me that day, i wanted to curl up in a fatal position and drink myself to death, but i preferred to one my daughter through action, and that was what i was going to do starting that afternoon. I have been battling this for the last four years, and i think that it has been a marathon, a not a sprint, as someone told me, but i think ultimately in the next election in virginia, and in the next election thats going to happen this fall in virginia, and then in 2020, you are going to see a significant. I know you believe there has to be political change to see substantial changes made to gun control laws in the us, but President Trump has himself said i know that previously he has managed to enforce the banning of stock devices for automatic weapons, which can expand the number of bullets released, effectively, just to put it simply, but he has spoken about perhaps introducing stricter background control checks, and he is also interested in expanding these red flag laws. Can you tell us how they may have helped in your daughters particular situation . Red flag law essentially gives a judge the ability to give Law Enforcement the ability to give Law Enforcement the ability to take weapons away from someone who either poses a danger to themselves or others. At the moment there are protective orders but they dont include guns. So, this would be a game changer, andi so, this would be a game changer, and i think that had this law been in effect in virginia four years ago, alison might be alive today and doing the news and i wouldnt be talking to you. We know it is notoriously difficult to try to change these laws, so what do you think is the most constructive way forward to protect the most number of people out there . Ultimately it is going to take if you cant change their minds, you change their seats. I think it will take elections to remove the people that are preventing this progress from happening, and preventing commonsense Gun Legislation from happening, and unfortunately the republicans in this country other party of the nra, and until we neutralise them electorally, and elect candidates and political leaders who are in favour of gun control, you are not going to have anything happen, buti control, you are not going to have anything happen, but i think that is the way to change and i think it is coming. Well, we can see the picture of your daughter in the background. We commend you and others who have been affected by these terrible crimes for all the work you are doing to make things safe in that country. All the best, andy parker, whose daughter alison was killed while she was reporting live on television. Absolutely horrific. Summer is nothing but endless iy wales. Summer is nothing but endless joy this week. We could use a late summer burst next weekend if you could organise that. summer burst next weekend if you could organise that. I think we can muster that up. You havent had your holiday but i have had mine, i dont care. Now on breakfast its time for the film review with ben brown andjames king. Hello there, welcome to the film review on bbc news. Taking us through this weeks cinema releases is james king. What do you have for us this week . Playmobil the movie is an animated musical, but will it have us dancing in the dark of the cinema . We go back to the glory days of hitchcock, bergman and grant with the reissued thriller notorious. And, yes, ive been using Bruce Springsteen song titles because blinded by the light is out. Its the story of one boys passion for the boss. Lets start off, then, with playmobil the movie. Who is this aimed at . Very good question. Its aimed young. I think that was the big surprised for me. We are quite used to family film now that have several layers to them, several levels to them. 0bviously children are to be taken to these films by their parents. This one aimed squarely at the under tens. Theres not really anything there for the older folk. In the wake of the lego movie and its sequel, brands like playmobil were going to be looking to get into the movie world. This actually starts out as a live action film about a brother and sister who then get magically transported to the playmobil world, this animated world of small plastic figures. They get lost, they have to find one another again. When they are there, they are helped by different characters. There are vikings in this, there are cowboys, their unicorns and there is a super spy called rex dasher. Voiced by daniel radcliffe. Here he is in action. Rex is brilliant, suave, a master of disguise. And did i mention rogueishly handsome . Surprise rex dasher at your service. I love that trick never gets old word of advice. In this town, nothing is what it seems. My enemies have eyes and ears everywhere. This way after me this onesjust garbage. It is lacking a little bit, i think, in that wit that we got used to with the lego movies, or with pixar movies, things like that. Also, and i know ultimately its just a film about small plastic figures aimed at children. It doesnt make any sense, though. The internal logic of this film is all over the place so what i would say is this. Its not great. The songs are there to paper over some of the cracks. Theyre fine. If you have children, and its of course the summer holidays, and theyve seen toy story 4, angry birds 2, all the other films out at the moment, then perhaps this will entertain them. I always look at these films and think longevity. Is this actually going be something we are going to go back to a lot in the years to come . Itjust doesnt have that charm, that craftsmanship about it that you get in the lego movies or you get any pixar films, the Studio Ghibli films from japan, anything like that. Will probably do for the summer. I think people will forget about it very quickly. Well, lets go to something that is much, much older, notorious, a reissue of the great hitchcock movie. Which is part of the hollywood sort of glory days. Absolutely, the golden era. Ingrid bergman and cary grant star. She is sent down to rio, actually, on an Undercover Mission to try and track down some nazis down there who are hiding out down there. He is her american handler and quite a conflict romance follows. Because it is a restoration, you can kind of see it there in the clip, it looks absolutely sparkling. It looks as if it was made just yesterday, rather than 19116. And the chemistry is so great between. Look at cary grant there. That is what movie stars should look like. The chemistry is great. He is of course suave and sophisticated, but playing a more withdrawn character than usual. Ingrid bergman just almost stealng the show, actually, as this wild playgirl, and hitchcocks direction. Youre going to see some familiar hitchcock things in there, the camera moves, the classic characters. The whole film is quite intimate. I think hitchcock wanted to make it simple. He would go on to things like north by northwest, which were epic. This is more simple, much more focused. And i really love the precision of it. I watched it again and was just so pleasantly surprised by how precise and how neat the whole thing is. It really is him working at the peak of his powers. How do you think it ranks amongst all the hitchcock movies . I think its one that actually perhaps we dont talk about quite so much because it is an espionage thriller. It is not the psychological thriller or quite so obviously a psychological thriller like psycho. But when you watch it again, the performances are flawless and i think the direction is flawless as well. So romantic. Some great kissing scenes in this. Some of the most famous kissing scenes in hollywood history. I would love to see that. Looking forward to seeing that once again. Its been ages since i saw that movie. Now, blinded by the light. This is by the director of bend it like beckham, who we were interviewing in here a couple of weeks ago. Gurinder chadha, yeah. And it is based on a true story, by the journalist sarfraz manzoor, about him growing up in the 805, in luton, part of a british pakistani family but loving the music of Bruce Springsteen. His family dont really appreciate this. Some of his friends at school dont appreciate this. There is something about bruce, this 30 something rocker from jersey, a long way from luton, that appeals to him. Viveik kalras stars in this. Lets have a look. Music born to run by Bruce Springsteen in the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American Dream at night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines sprung from cages out on highway 9 chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin out over the line 0h baby, this town rips the bones from your back its a death trap, its a suicide rap we gotta get out while were young cos tramps like us baby, we were born to run. Hey, get out of here its a kind of a feel good movie. And she was telling us when we were interviewing her about the film, actually, thats she and sarfraz manzoor, whose memoir who it is based on, went up to Bruce Springsteen on the red carpet and jointly asked, could they use his music . And he said yes. Yes, i think that was the way this film got made. Thats how they did it. Theyjust had to kind of pounce on him. But hes been very supportive of it since and has been at a premiere in america and things like that. Because his music is throughout the film. It sent me home to listen to Bruce Springsteen songs. That is one of the many things it will do. You want to go and scream some Bruce Springsteen songs after watching the film. Because the music of moment of the best moments, i think, for me. It really captures the power of his songs and why they have universal appeal, because of their lyrics, because he writes about working class people, people with big dreams, people who live out in the suburbs, and that can appeal to lots of people around the world. It does really capture the power of the music. Some of thejokes, i think i was a bit less convinced by the lighter moments, but certainly the serious moments in this film. There are some good scenes between father and son as well, which are very powerful. The serious moments, the moments where it really immerses itself in the music, those are really strong. Yeah, because she did say she wanted to highlight the kind of racism that there was at that time in the uk. Yeah, and again, you wouldnt necessarily think that Bruce Springsteen songs from the 80s would do that. When you see the lyrics, sometimes the lyrics are on the screen, not as subtitles but quite cleverly blended into the background in the movie. When you see the lyrics and you really think about it, you understand why this guy would so associate with Bruce Springsteen music. Springsteen comes to luton best out . Holiday. This is a danish film. Has raised some eyebrows, i think, understandably. It is quite a startling film at times, quite a stark film at times, about a young woman who is dating a drug dealer. She goes to turkey, on holiday with him to a beach side resort. And hes quite possessive, she meets some other people there. She makes some new friends and that really affects their relationship. And really what it is, it is a film about power struggles, about power games, mind games, as well as this young woman growing up and working out who she is. There are some very alarming moments in it. There are some upsetting moments in it. It certainly requires a lot of viewing for viewers. You dontjust sit back and watch it and dont think about it. You have to take about this movie. You will want to discuss it afterwards. That is why i liked it, though. It does shock, it does surprise, and it is unconventional. And i think isabella has a great future in the european arthouse world, because this is a very strong debut from her. Best streaming . For the birds. This is about a hoarder. She is called kathy murphy, lives in upstate new york. She hoards birds chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks. Has about 200 of them inside and outside. Any reason why . That is what the film explores. At first you thing its just, but actually it explores her psychologically. And it gets to explore her relationship with her husband it is quite an unconventional relationship and what is going on in her head. Dont think it is just a film about a woman who hoards chickens. Actually, it becomes much broader and really delves into this marriage and becomes rather inspiring, actually. It certainly is a surprising film. That is why i wanted to recommend it, because you think it is about one thing. As the film goes on, it blossoms into something much different. Sounds interesting. James, thank you very much indeed. Pleasure. All right. That is it for this week, though. Thank you so much for watching and its goodbye from both of us. Hello. Hello, this is breakfast with rogerjohnson and rachel burden. Our correspondent has had many moments with eddiejones. He really tried. Eddiejones moments with eddiejones. He really tried. Eddie jones is moments with eddiejones. He really tried. Eddiejones is not the easiest man to break down. The extraordinary thing about wales as they could be world number one in by they could be world number one in rugby terms if they avoid defeat today. That would be a phenomenal achievement for them. Edinburghs International Book festival gets under way this weekend and despite a rise in popularity of e books the traditional book shop appears to be thriving so whats the enduring appeal . Bbc scotlands the nine asked two booksellers one with a brand new shop, the other whos been trading since 1972 to give us their thoughts on our lasting love for books. A shop started around the corner in 1972. We werent sure how it would do, because it was quite a tiny shop, and it was very successful. So much so that the place got filled up very quickly. One of the things about this bookshop is i think it is about this bookshop is i think it is a destination bookshop. There is a piano in the bookshop, and i think it is very appealing, and people have seen it on twitter and instagram and gotten excited, and it has brought them through the doors. The way the space was designed was to have lots of space, so lots of books face out, so it is perfect for browsing, displaying books that work perfectly as gifts, and books you really see as covetable pieces of design, and the whole shop is also designed so it is easily navigable for people in wheelchairs. People get upset by because they want to tidy it up, other people think they mightfind tidy it up, other people think they might find something theyve been looking for orjust come across something by accident. They might not find things terribly easily, but they may find something else. Not find things terribly easily, but they may find something elsem not find things terribly easily, but they may find something else. It is a mixture of what will do well and what we think the books are that are successful in the market at the time, and books that we really like ourselves, once we find interesting. There are out of print books, people might look at the subject, like history, and come across a book they didnt know existed, or you cant get any more. All theyjust like the idea of sifting through the piles and finding something. We did a kind of rough estimate once, i think it was about 16,000. We usually do know what we have, but if it was a certain one that we get asked forward a lot it is alice in wonderland. People looking for a gift. People who consume ebooks and audiobooks also consume printed books. I would say the same for libraries. People who borrow books do it because i love reading, and they are more likely to go and buy books from the local independent bookshop. It is people who are passionate about books and reading and want to get a bigger experience out of books, and bookshops offer venues out of books, and bookshops offer venues to have that live experience with books, because reading doesnt have to be a very solitary activity. Sitting in front of a cold computer you are not having any interaction with the computer. There is something kind of special about holding a book in your hand. You could spend weeks in a bookshop like that. You know exactly the smell that would greet you when you walk in. Lets have a look at the weather forecast. That is a lovely sunrise. Yes. It is cracking and the weather is not doing its best for us at the moment but at least a little sunshine to start the day that it this captured bya start the day that it this captured by a weather watcher. It will be a dry and sunny day more weather warnings across parts of the uk for more heavy rain. The wind may ease from yesterday but areas that have seen enough in the way of flooding, once again was a further heavy rain and the potential for flooding later. If you are on the move, bbc local radio is the best port of all. Let me show you whether wettest spots are at the moment. To the north west of wales at the moment and that rain is sliding towards Northern England so we will get wetter. Went around edinburgh yet again where we have seen flooding. 0utbreaks again where we have seen flooding. Outbreaks of rain to the west of scotla nd outbreaks of rain to the west of scotland will push southward through the day and things will brighten up. But while many through southern counties of england will start the day sunny, heavy and thundery showers are said to develop and they will become more widespread as we go into the afternoon. Looking at the details as we enter the afternoon, brightening across northern scotland but it will feel cool. Central and southern scotland, once again a focus for persistent rain. Particularly towards lothian and the borders. Northern ireland will brighten up a bit of corbys develops here. We will see heavy thundery showers develop across parts of wales and the midlands and towards the south west of england. Many here will stay dry with some sunshine. The wind is nowhere near as strong as yesterday although still a blustery day. Temperatures reaching 22, 23 but just look blustery day. Temperatures reaching 22, 23 butjust look further north, mid teens at their highest today and thatis mid teens at their highest today and that is a sign of what is to happen through this week ahead. As you go through this week ahead. As you go through into the evening and overnight, the rain is still there for a time. It will slowly turn a little lighter and patchy and could remain focused across some parts of the north east. Away from that, many areas are dry with partly clear skies and a cool light across scotla nd skies and a cool light across scotland and Northern Ireland with temperatures dropping to single figures as we start the new week. Discharges in the new week, an area of low pressure pulling away and leaving a trail of weather front. Focus for the cloud and up weeks of rain as we start monday so north east england drifting down towards parts of yorkshire, eventually lincolnshire and maybe some of the north west of england as well. The south east corner could see heavy hungry showers close by but many will have a largely dry day, a drier day than the past you on monday with a bit more sunshine around. That will temper the fact that we have cool weather with us. Temperatures around 15, 201d at the high through the week ahead we stick with temperatures in the mid high teens, low 20s across the uk. There will be sunshine around if you are on summer holiday. Best of that will be tuesday and thursday but want to watch at the moment, lets show you what happens through tuesday night and into wednesday. More low pressure and into wednesday. More low pressure pushing into the details of this range still uncertain but if you see more wet and windy weather. But there will be sunshine at times, i promise. Now on breakfast, its time for click. Newsreel stand by, please. Stand by, alexandra palace. Switch out, regions, switch out. And cut to palace. This is alexandra palace, the birthplace of television. 0n 2 november 1936, the worlds first regular High DefinitionPublic Television service was broadcast from there. Tvjoined radio and the printed word in bringing us entertainment and information, to bring us together and broaden our minds. But these days, information has another way of getting out. Social media has given us all the power to say whatever we want and show whatever we want, and that has caused several governments big problems. Some countries like china, iran and saudi arabia block news and discussions about topics they dont want their people to hear about. But many more countries will sporadically block social media sites, slow down internet speeds or even switch off net access altogether to try and stifle unrest and dissent at sensitive times. And the country that shuts down net access the most is . India. And by far, the bulk of those shutdowns are in the disputed himalayan region of kashmir. This week, the Indian Government removed the special status of the part of the region that it administers. It was an unprecedented move thats seen schools closed, demos banned, leaders arrested and, of course, the internet shut down. A couple of weeks ago, david reid went to kashmir to find out more about the regular shutdowns that were happening there. As it turned out, he was one of the last foreign journalists to be allowed in. Kashmir might look peaceful it isnt. Authorities here are fighting a long running insurgency. Many kashmiris and others say india is an occupier. Almost 50,000 have died in decades of violence. Even before this weeks clampdown, authorities regularly shut down the mobile internet as i found during a recent visit. Our business is an Online Food Delivery service, its the first Online Delivery Service start up in kashmir. More than a0 times this year, kashmirs mobile internet has been cut off or throttled back, not great for sales of chicken wraps or spicy mutton curry. What do you do when the internet is off . Every time we have to call our customers, our data base customers and we try to send an smss that we are serviceable. Last time, we had pamphlets and we distributed them to colleges and schools. Its going back to the 19505 and working without internet and internet is a very important part of your life right now. Normally its only the mobile internet cut off, not domestic broadband. Why dont you just use broadband . Its just too expensive. Broadband is more expensive than 4g and everyone cant afford a connection at home. The measure is unpopular and there are suspicions its less about security than just stifling dissent. They are claiming we are the largest democracy in the world, but its not a democracy because you cant suppress the voice of dissent in a democratic system. I headed over to speak to kashmirs police. Interestingly, their internet policy seems less about foiling militant operations, but more about preventing propaganda and rumour. We are here fighting a proxy war. We see a lot of content from our neighbourhood coming here and trying to create a propaganda which is absolutely not correct and at times, that leads to a serious law and order problem. Kashmiris joke that the internet is just a switch on some bureaucrats desk and there is a feeling that its all a bit too easy. There is no transparency. Some shutdowns in india are frivolous. According to this tracker run by a delhi based ngo, the mobile internet was cut off 30 times in rajasthan last year. No insurgency there. And at least four of those were to prevent cheating in Police Recruitment exams. Authorities say shutdowns are signed off by magistrates and audited. We have to take their word for it. The audits are secret. 0ur tracker is built around exposing reality of the internet shutdowns, the quantum of internet shutdowns in india. What we demand of the government is transparency. There is no government published data on shutdowns. But we also have to rely on citizens reportage. India is probably one of the strongest democracies to utilise this policy, which is problematic. India cuts off the internet more than any other country. Ok, the population here is enormous and much of the time, indias internet has been pretty open. Select censorship, but without a china style content firewall. That said, critics contend that countries are taking indias lead, cutting off comms in a crisis. By the way, they also say shutdowns actually increase violence. What you are doing, if anything, in curtailing access to the internet is disallowing people the ability to organise, again, Peaceful Demonstrations which are well within the confines of the law. It creates a disrupted communication environment which potentially induces more chaos, more violence. This weeks clampdown has meant a complete Communications Blackout internet, phone, tv. The uns special rapporteur has called it draconian and kashmir has been gagged, cut off from the rest of the world. The lion king opening theme plays. The idea of embracing something that took what technology has to offer to create a photo real version of this story, as told through the eyes of what would feel like a documentary, a live action documentary crew, was an exciting prospect for us. Disney refers to this as a live action film, which is a bit misleading, but i think it is tonally correct, because we did use those techniques, and hopefully it does feel like something that was actually photographed, even though every shot with the exception of one, actually, every shot in the film is completely computer generated. And every performance is animated. We built it using tools to create essentially a completely digital 3d environment, and then you have 3d digital animals that are in that environment, and thats how you would do the final render of it, whether it was a marvel movie or whether it was a film like this. But since we already have those assets we could bring that into this consumer facing vr system, using in this case the unity game engine, and because we now have this environment and vr, we can have people enter into the digital set and be able walk around and look at it as though we were on a scout, and it allowed me to hire someone like caleb deschanel, who is a great cinematographer, who ive known for a long time and wanted to work with, but had no background in visual effects and we made it user friendly, so he could walk around with us, with the production designer, the visual effects supervisor and the director, look at the set, say, 0k, we should put the camera here, lets see the lion rehearse the scene, and the ad would hit the button and run the animation cycle, we would watch like you would in a regular set, you think about where he wants the light, we could move the sun if we had to, move some trees around, so we had a full live action film crew in vr, operating camera equipment as though it were a live action set. But we always tried to limit ourselves in what you could achieve in real life, and that is what gave it the aesthetic that people are reacting so well too. All right, let me see what we are dealing with here. Its a lion phase one is this whole virtual shoot, where we do rough animation, we build rough versions of the sets, they look like rough video games, and you put it together, and you shoot every shot, and now you have a complete edit of the whole movie with dialogue and temporary music, and you really have every shot. It is notjust a study, these are choices that jon and caleb and the other filmmakers were putting into place. Every one of those shots is like a 3d file, a data file, that comes here to mpc london and we have a Layout Department that works out all the space and all, and imports all those cameras and lines it up and makes sure the scene is going to work. Animation department jumps right on the characters and starts creating the super delicate, fine performances. The environments and sets department creates the entire african savannah, painstakingly making literally thousands of plants and trees and rocks. Lifes not fair. Is it, my little friend . And the Lighting Department and the simulation departments which add the movement of the water and the movement of the fur, they all come in and complete the realism, so the world, the character in the world, the way the light works off those materials, the way every blade of grass is moving, everything has to be just right. Were here everyone, calm down, we are here. The backup has arrived at its core, cinema comes from the tradition of illusion, and melies, and using all of these tools to make the audience believe they are seeing something that they are not. And that is part of the delight, i think, of something that is effects driven, especially if there is a wonderful story behind it to carry it. You must take your place. In the circle of life. Lion roars. That was fascinating, wasnt it. If you liked that, then you might like to watch the full 20 minute chat with jon favreau, which is on our youtube channel. There he goes into everything from iron man and star wars to digital doubles and deepfakes. Well worth a look, thats at youtube. Com bbcclick.
