England and wales have suffered a major power cut today affecting homes, transport networks and hospitals. In all, nearly a million households were of the dead. The National Grid says issues with two Power Generators caused the outage however the problem has now been resolved. Thousands of passengers were shut out some of the busiest train stations or left stranded themselves. One hospital was was forced onto a backup system that failed. The midlands, where half a Million People were of the dead. In london in the south east, 300,000 people lost power was parts of the north east also experienced serious problems. Trains were knocked out. Newcastle airport lost power. At Ipswich Hospital, a backup generatorfailed when power. At Ipswich Hospital, a backup generator failed when the power went out stop tonight there are questions about why the two National GridPower Generators failed and what can be done to prevent future problems. Katie austin has the report. Commuters navigating Clapham Junction station in darkness. This evenings power cuts did not last long but the impact affected more than a Million People. Including thousands of train passengers across the country, some unable to board. I am going to hang around and see if they put the trains back on and fix the issue but if not, im going to have to find somewhere to stay tonight and get a train tomorrow. No one has come over and spoken to me. No one seems to know what is going on. If you go and ask for help, no one really knows what is going on at all. While some were stuck on trains. I was on a train to edinburgh through to london, we stopped in the countryside for an hour and a half with no information. We were starting to conserve water but now they are sending us back to peterborough station where we are just going to have to be, i presume, dumped off stoplights london kings cross is one of the countrys Busiest Railway stations. Passengers turned up this evening to find delays and cancellations and have now been told services are unlikely to resume today. Reports of a problem emerged shortly after 5pm. Uk Power Networks tweeted it was aware of a power cut which it believed was due to a National Grid network failure. It supplies london and the south east and said 300,000 homes were affected in that region, but it didnt end there. Half a Million People lost power in the area western Power Distribution covers, south west england, south wales and the midlands. 110,000 customers served by northern power grid in the north east, 26,000 supplied by Electricity North West in areas from penrith in cumbria to stockport in greater manchester, and 16,000 sse customers in central and southern england, and tens of thousands more were affected in cheshire and merseyside. National grid said the issue was caused by the loss of two generators that connect to the gigabits Transmission System which led to a fall in the frequency of the electricity system and it had to disconnect part of the network. It said that by 6 30pm, all demand was restored by the Distribution Network operators, and the system is operating normally. By then, the loss of power had affected drivers, too, with some traffic lights out. Newcastle airport experienced power issues, too, as did Ipswich Hospital, where the back up generator failed. My mum got stuck in the lift in the scan, so we were looking at her ten feet off the ground, wondering how on earth she was going to get into the lift, because it wasnt working, or get down again, and it was quite a terrifying 20 minutes, wondering what is going to happen, are we going to have to get the Emergency Services . People whose friday evening journeys turned into a nightmare will be wondering how this could have happened. Katy austin, bbc news. Our correspondent alex dunlop has more from Ipswich Hospital which was affected by the power cut. 650 beds and an a e unit. A power cut a cut of this scale is potentially very serious. They lost power at about 5pm and critically, one of the three generators here did not work. For whatever reason, and they are still trying to investigate, there was a complete power outage across a 48 acre site for between 20 30 minutes. The hospitals keen to stress at no point were patients put at risk and they were able to carry out procedures and observations manually, like Blood Pressure testing and giving oxygen and so forth. They say that at no point did they have to transfer hospital patients to other hospitals. Other procedures like x rays, scans, couldnt be carried out and they have apologised to patients that they had to be postponed. Its a blessing that this happened in the early evening outside of normal hours when planned operations are taking place. The first priority, they say, is for patients, and the second priority for the hospital will be to find out how this happened and to stop it happening again. As weve been hearing, there have been major travel disruptions. Our correspondence, ben ando, gave us this update from outside kings cross station. Thousands are stuck here and thousands have been stuck on trains. At the moment, for all these passengers, the question is, do they try to find alternative routes home . Tickets are being accepted on other routes out of london, for example from st pancras on east midlands trains. Do they find a hotel or look at getting a bus or taxi or something . Lots of people here are quite angry and i think questions are being asked about how robust our Power Network is. The bbc understands that two power stations failed, one in cambridgeshire, a conventional gas turbine station, and the other a wind turbine station in the north sea. Emergency protocols kicked in to protect the system but that meant a power outage to a large part of the network, causing problems for houses, hospitals and of course, for the transport network. That was ben ando. For the first time in 6. 5 years, the uk economy has shrunk, falling by 0. 2 . The contraction in gdp of the total value of goods and Services Made and sold by all set as of the economy was worse than some had expected. But the chancellor sajid javid says the fundamentals of the economy remain resilient and strong, and hes not expecting a recession. Our economics editor faisal islam reports. This is a stockpile, reams of printing material, labels, plastics, inks shipped into this leicester food labelling company to beat the last brexit deadline. This across tens of thousands of british warehouses boosted the economy before march and took away from it between april and june, helping leave the british economy shrinking for the first time in years. For now it isnt generally expected the uk is in its first formal recession, that is two consecutive quarters of the year where the economy gets smaller, since the great financial crisis a decade ago, but this is the first shrinkage over a three month period for six and a half years, when the crisis in the eurozone was raging. The First Quarter of this year was flatted by the effect of billions of pounds of stock piling which explains some, not all of todays weakness. The question now is what happens in the next three months . What a welcome for a new chancellor of the exchequer, who played down his shock on a visit to the National Grid. No one will be surprised by todays figures, there was a general expectation growth in this quarter would be slower than the previous quarter and the important thing is the fundamentals of the uk economy remain very strong. Can you rule out a recession . Im not expecting recession at all, and dont take my word for it, there isnt a single leading forecaster that is expecting a recession. The east midlands is a hub for logistics and freight and in these lorries and giant storage sheds is an economy trying to deal with the prospect of more fundamental changes to the way this country trades. The governments argument that the disappointing numbers are down to the fact that in warehouses up and down the country they had to wind down the extraordinary level of stockpiled parts and products for the brexit that never was in march. But this is only part of the story. A recession, although not likely, is now possible. The economy far from turbo charged at a sensitive point. Here in nottinghamshire, the chancellor was meeting apprentices and acknowledged a brexit factor in the numbers but not a jolt from the rising chances of no deal in october. Most of all we want to bring certainty which is why we must leave on october 31 and if that means leaving with no deal, that is the way its going to be. It is the certainty of no deal that is impacting on intentions, that is what the bank of england has said. Businesses want certainty around brexit. But what sort of certainty . The labelling boss in leicester says he is fed up of stockpiling and he has delayed investing to fit out his new factory. We went through this before march and now between march and october. We have had a lot of unstable, uncertainty, and the cloudy skies are upon us again. We cant move forward or back, we are stuck in a rut, thats where we are. The expectation is britain avoids a formal recession by growing but with the pound tumbling again, nothing seems too certain in the british economy. There is uncertainty about the bbcs ability to patrol fishing waters. Our political correspondentjessica parker says this is a contentious and emotive issue for the uk. This memo we have seen from defra is looking at the uks readiness to deal with the no deal exit. If there we re deal with the no deal exit. If there were no deal brexit, the rules in terms of access to fishing waters would change. Fishing vessels from eu countries wouldnt be coming closer than 200 nautical miles off the coast or at the midway point between the two countries. Will the uk be able to monitor that and enforce it . In this memo which it seems was sent in error to the bbc it discusses the fact that at this stage there is a lot of uncertainty about the sufficiency of enforcement in no deal because we have 12 vessels that need to monitor a space three times the size of the surface area of the uk. Weve heard from a Government Spokesperson in reaction to what weve seen this evening. They are saying the uk will be leaving the eu on october 31 and there is a sufficient number of ships and expertise on hand to deal with any scenario and patrol the uks waters but ive been speaking to the former security minister and formerfirst to the former security minister and former first sea lured to the former security minister and formerfirst sea lured to the former security minister and former first sea lured see to the former security minister and formerfirst sea lured see lord, says this raises concerns about the capacity to deal with no deal but ive spoken to a south coast fishermen who said a lot of fishermen who said a lot of fishermen want to see no deal brexit because otherwise they are worried that their rights be sold off as some sort of bargaining chip. As ever, with exit, not cut and dry but this memo this evening seems to raise questions as to whether the government thinks it has capacity in dealing with no deal brexit regarding fishing. A 28 year old churchwarden has been found guilty of murder after tricking his victim into changing his will. Ben field manipulated Peter Farquhar who was 69, duping him into a relationship and then lacing his food with drugs and neat alcohol. However field was found not guilty of the attempted murder of a retired headmistress who was 83, and whom field also admitted, hed tricked into a relationship. Tom symonds has the story. A respected former teacher and novelist, Peter Farquhar rendered helpless. He had suffered falls, injuries, he had no idea what was going on. That second voice is the man who talked his way into peters life. Despite the age difference, his student, ben field, promised to marry him while secretly lacing peters food with drugs and neat alcohol, killing him slowly for his money. Here is a cold, calculating, devious man, who took pleasure from inflicting both physical and mental torment on his victim. Evil. Peter even dedicated a book to field. In return, field tried to convince people he had dementia, and then peter was found dead. Alcohol was suspected. Suspiciously, he had signed his home over to ben field. But field wasnt done. Three doors down from the house where peter lived, he found another elderly victim. And the deception started again. A sexual relationship with Ann Moore Martin, a 57 year age gap. He targeted her religious beliefs. Bizarre messages started appearing on her mirrors. Ben field had planned it all in his notebook, and, then, this. Hello, im thinking of withdrawing all my accounts, money held in my accounts. £27,000. But ann also told her niece what was going on and the police got involved. They found out about fields abusive relationships. They exhumed and re examined peters body. The jury today found ben field had suffocated him. He had already admitted defrauding peter and ann. Fields friend, martyn smith, was cleared of charges that hed helped. In a Statement Read by the police, Peters Family said there were lessons to be learned. If people hear this story, we hope they are very, very careful if somebody unexpected walks into the life of a loved one when that loved one is vulnerable and lonely. There must be other people out there like ben field and we wouldnt want anyone to have to go through the things that we have. In the quiet village of maids moreton, this was a chilling case. Two devout but Vulnerable People mentally and physically exploited. Sadly, Ann Moore Martin also died of natural causes. Ben field, his picture hanging over her dressing table, had blighted her final years. India has told pakistan to give out of its internal affairs as tension continues to rise over the disputed region of kashmir. Today some mosques were allowed to open in the interested men indian administered parts of the territory after a Communications Blackout and lockdown that has been in place since sunday. Kashmir is planed claimed by both pakistan and india with the two Nuclear Armed neighbours controlling different sections of the state. But last week new delhi revoked the limited autonomy of the area it administers, taking away its special status. Some observers the move fits the populist agenda of indias hindu nationalist minister narendra modi, because kashmir is indias only majority muslim state. Our correspondent is one of the few International Journalists in kashmir she us this report. Tensions in kashmir are beginning to rise. Young protesters have been coming out in many areas. Pelting stones at Security Forces and jeering at them. Soldiers fire lead pellets and tear gas to disperse the mob. Chanting. Voices that have been suppressed for days have begun to be heard. This was a spontaneous march by men who had just offered friday prayers. They walked through small alleys because they cant go out on the main roads. Translation in every part of india, people are celebrating, but they dont know that our hearts are bleeding. We are crying. We are under siege. Translation we have been completely betrayed. They have put a gun to our heads and told us that a few people in the government have decided our fate. Earlier, inside the mosque, too, there was sloganeering, and the cleric also made a speech about the issue. The dispute over kashmir can only end when they take the opinion of people here, he said. It is the first friday since the government removed this regions special privileges. While most of the big mosques were closed, in some places, people were allowed to go out and pray. However, phone and internet lines remain cut off. Separatist leaders have been moved out of kashmir. Top politicians from the region remain under house arrest. The indian government, taking no chances, worried that the situation here could spiral into widespread unrest. Away from the empty streets of kashmir, in other parts of india, the governments actions have found resounding support. It is a very good decision. We will now be able to control terrorism, one woman says. I went to kashmir as a tourist but i didnt feel safe. Prime minister modi has made a good move. A beautiful land that is no stranger to conflict, but rarely has it stood on the cusp of such an uncertain future. There are new signs today of the extraordinary dangers migrants are prepared to take across the channel. Two people were rescued from a kayak in the middle of the worlds biggest shopping lane and another boat carrying 11 people overturned. Some people had to be pulled out of the water by the french authorities. In total more than a0 people had to be picked up. The small boats brought back to dover have become a common site, left so this, migrants sitting on the whole. Two other people had a tangent attempted to paddle across the channel. This is extraordinary, to come across the English Channel in a 2 man kayak, feeling like this is an example of a 2 man kayak, great for just feeling like this is an example of a 2 man kayak, great forjust off the beach and paddling around the coastline, but to go through the English Channel with Something Like this is taking a massive risk. How dangerous do you think this was . Extremely dangerous, it is more like that they got spotted where they did rather than actually found by a ship or not hit by a ship, without a doubt. We could be talking about a fatality . It is just like doubt. We could be talking about a fatality . It isjust like that we are not. So far this month 77 migrants have managed reached the uk by boat, and total 837 have been picked up this year by the border force and other 179 by the french authorities. Charities supporting migrants say conditions like these in calais, with some migrants sleeping rough in garbage tips, taking making people take evermore Desperate Measures to get to britain. This shows the desperation that people are feeling to wa nt desperation that people are feeling to want to have a flimsy means of transport like a kayak coming over to the uk, and also shows that the countermeasures that have been taken dont really address this particular situation. Shouldnt people be gaming claiming asylum in france which is a safe country . Many people feel they have connections with the uk, which means that they feel they have a right to actually claim asylu m have a right to actually claim asylum in the uk. One of calaiss top officials in a recent interview with the bbc said he was taking the issue seriously. Translation for us, the french authorities, we need firstly to save lives, avoid any serious incidents, and also disrupt people trafficking networks. But this will not be a quick or easy task. That was simon jones that was simonjones reporting. Hong kong is bracing itself for another weekend of turmoil, there was a large but peaceful peaceful occupation of the International Airport early today by pro democracy demonstrators. Hong kong . Leader carrie lam criticise those who have been involved in increasingly violent street clashes, and beijing has ordered a Hong Kong BasedAirline Cathay pacific to suspend any Airline Cathay pacific to suspend a ny staff Airline Cathay pacific to suspend any staff who support the demonstration. In their thousands, black clad pro democracy activists divide occupied the arrivals hall at hong kong airport. The officials allow the city and to continue as long as corridors were left clear for travellers to leave the building. We wa nt travellers to leave the building. We want democracy because we realise that this is an authoritarian government, and we need our voice to be heard by the government. The protesters said the aim was to reach a wider audience, and carrying banners criticising the local government, calling for universal suffrage and demanding an independent enquiry into alleged links between Police Officers and tryout gangs. Over the past two months, the police have used excessive force, to stop the protesters from happening. Hong kongs leader carrie lamb carrie lam said no investigation was needed as police were carrying out their own internal investigation, and at a news co nfe re nce own internal investigation, and at a News Conference she warned there would be more arrests over coming days if radical pro democracy groups continue to clash with riot police. They did not mind destroying hong kongs economy, they have no stake in the society which so many people have helped to build. And that is why they resort to all this violence and obstructions, causing huge damage. What these people want, their key demand is to be able to choose who they are a leader is. They are today no closer to achieving that. Carrie lam showing no sign that she is moving in that direction, nor is beijing. However as you can see, these activists are also showing no inclination that they are prepared to give up yet. Chinas Central Government has also targeted stuff from cathay pacific, who have supported the pro democracy movement. The Civil Aviation administration said any flight from Hong Kong Airline carrying crew had backed the protest would neither be allowed to land in china not fly through chinese airspace. We certainly wouldnt dream of telling them what they have to think about something, they are all adults, they are all service professionals, we respect them greatly. It may well be august but the wet and windy weather is causing disruption across large part of wales. A yellow metal has allowed for strong wind has now been extended to saturday night, they have been flash flooding and organisers of the National Stanford have closed down part of the event early over safety concerns. Eisteddfod. This has the lowest in 500 houses, and all the water down, and even after the rain stopped the water continued to rise. The Thompson Family were still disposing of items when their garage flight of three weeks ago when they were hit again. Time sewage and water got the house. I opened the front door and there were 5 six inches of water all inside, the what had gone into our living room, that wasnt even the worst of it because it kept getting deeper and deeper. And it went throughout the entire downstairs of our house, their stuff in the garage, literally, things we re in the garage, literally, things were floating. A roll of wallpaper literally floated past from the garage and we have lost a lot of stuff all over again. Although the flooding and not these wells is pretty localised and the worst of the heavy rain seems to have eased for now, that is cold comfort to people like the Thompson Family who have found themselves flooded yet again. And rather than stay to see what happens next they are moving out for the night falls also in wrexham the Security Camera footage shows the moment that lightning struck a parked car causing it headlights to turn on. At the national eisteddfod, the evening entertainment and peoples campsite have been closer to precaution ahead of more predicted bad weather. The moment it is quite wet, there is a lot of mud around, we are expecting a lot more rain tonight and tomorrow, it will be very wet tomorrow on saturday, we are expecting the wind to come up, not to dangerous levels, we are not putting any allowance of flood warnings out but there will be a lot more water out in the fields. warnings out but there will be a lot more water out in the fields. I feel it has been a bit unorganised, that they wanted us to pick up straightaway, but it is better to do it now than in the middle of a storm. The message has been really quickly, it is disappointing but everyone will be safe so it is for the best. The heavy rain also cause problems at this bookstore in swa nsea, problems at this bookstore in swansea, which was forced to close when water began to pour through the ceiling. Its heartbreaking, to see the damage to the books as a bookseller, it is horrible. We will need to get dehumidifiers into dry everything out, all the books have been damaged, we need to gradually rebuild everything back again. Careful driving is necessary in areas where vast amount of rental has fallen just a few hours. Unseasonably strong winds will affect large parts of wales tonight and tomorrow with just of more than 40 mph and tomorrow with just of more than a0 mph expected. Some weekend events have been cancelled due to the forecast, the rain put a damper on last nights partying but organisers say safety must come first. Find out what the weather will be doing this weekend. This is the time when we look at the weather for the next ten days, and ina word, weather for the next ten days, and in a word, it is unsettled. But in the shorter term, things look very u nsettled the shorter term, things look very unsettled indeed, in fact quite turbulent through saturday, heavy downpours and very strong winds for some of us, which could well cause some of us, which could well cause some travel problems. The jetstream, the winds high the atmosphere digging a long way south at the moment, and that dip in the jetstrea m moment, and that dip in the jetstream has sped up a deep area of low pressure which you can see on the satellite picture, this swell of cloud, in the centre of this area of low pressure we have some brisk winds, you can see all the white lines, the isobars squatting together, particularly across the southern part of the uk. That means the showers that develop across Southern Area through saturday should ease through fairly quickly, whereas further north across the far north of england, Northern Ireland and scotland whether winds will be lighter, thunderstorms and showers will be slower moving so some localised flooding could happen. The wind will cause some issues, particularly across england and wales, england gust of 50 mph per mile, 60 miles an hourfrom or more for some spots, that could cause issues for Outdoor Events and some issues were travelling, and bridges between 15 23 degrees. As we move into sundy that wind will remain brisk for a time across Southern Areas, they will slowly ease as we go through the day on sunday, and the wind started to come in from the north west, so they will start to ring down some cooler air, in fact some really cool air for
