Have you already made a change . Get in touch. Just use bbcthebriefing. Lets begin with that question. How much are you prepared to do to help combat Climate Change . Un scientists are set to urge people to help by cutting down on meat and switching to plant based diets. But the experts, due to release their findings in a few hours, will stop short of calling on people to adopt vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. Heres our environment analyst roger harrabin. This alpine landscape was once covered by forest. The trees it sucked Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere and regulated the climate. Then humans cleared some of the land for food. But cattle then humans cleared some of the land forfood. But cattle burp methane, and that strongly heats the atmosphere. This sort of low intensity grazing may reduce protein from poor soil, and it does have some environmental benefits but it still creates more Greenhouse Gases than growing plant protein. Scientists meeting here in the alps are not saying weve all got to go vegan to protect the climate. They are saying that we do need to cut down on red meat and dairy produce and shift on towards eating more vegetables. And that message may not go down very well here in a region thatis go down very well here in a region that is so heavily dependent on trees and meet. Debate here has been fraught because the way we use the land is so complex. Among the experts recommendations are on biofuels, limiting the area used to grow trees to be burned to make electricity. This could conflict with feeding the world. On deforestation, working harder to protect the trees that attacked us from climate heating. On desertification, finding ways to feed people that dont involve degrading the soil through overgrazing. Then theres the way we eat. In the west we over consume meat and dairy, thats bad for our health, the climate, water and land degradation so if we were able to reduce our consumption in the west of meat and dairy, then we could have significant benefits for the climate but also our health. Scientists also want to stop food being discarded because wasting food means the Greenhouse Gases created to produce the fertilisers to grow the crops have been for nothing. A charity in geneva redistributes waste food. Here theyre taking stale bread and turning it into new cookies. This avoids having to produce fresh flower to produce the cookies. Here is a positive sign. Word or in the north of england where previously drained so animals could graze. When pete is exposed to the air it gives off Greenhouse Gases so now theyre soaking up the channels. One of the easier options in what for scientists has become an increasingly desperate attempt to stop planet overheating. Roger harrabin, bbc news. Scientists have created a vodka made with grain grown inside the chernobyl exclusion zone in ukraine, the scene of the worlds worst nuclear disaster. Atomik is the first drink to be produced in the area since the accident in 1986. Our science correspondent victoria gill has been given a unique taste of what is on offer. Abandoned for more than 30 years, but in one small pocket of the 4,000 square kilometre exclusion zone that surrounds the Chernobyl Nuclear power plant, it is harvest time. This experimental farm was set up by a team of scientists, and the crops being grown here, they say, could be a First Step Towards using this land productively again. Very nice chernobylski rye grains. This means we dont just abandon the land. We can use this land in different and diverse ways, and we can produce something which will be totally clean from the radioactivity. And this is what it is being used to produce. Our idea was distil it and produce a kind of moonshine artisan vodka. This is set to be the first Consumer Product that is made entirely from ingredients grown within the exclusion zone. I tremble when i pick it up, because this is the only bottle in existence. This is no more radioactive than any other vodka. Weve checked it, weve have two of the best laboratories in the world looking to see if they can find any radioactivity from chernobyl, and they havent found any. It might not be for everyone, but this is about much more than making a spirit with a unique selling point. Communities in relatively uncontaminated outer regions of the exclusion zone still live under strict regulations. No agriculture is permitted here. It is hoped that some of those restrictions will soon be lifted, but any vodka profits will be channelled into supporting Economic Development in areas still affected by the social impacts of the nuclear accident. Until atomik production starts, though, im allowed just a tiny taste, poured from a genuinely unique bottle. Victoria gill, bbc news. Its been a week of mixed fortunes. Plenty of sharp showers for some, some sunny plenty of sharp showers for some, some sunny spells for others. But tomorrow, a brief ridge of High Pressure will quieten things down, before we see a deep area of low pressure moving into the south west, bringing some increasingly wet and windy weather, particularly for this time of year. The rain is expected to arrive during the early hours of friday morning. The winds will strengthen. Gales will continue across england and wales for the start of the weekend, so get out and enjoy thursdays weather if you can. Itll start off largely dry and bright, with some sunny spells. Showers few and far between. Favoured spots one or two into scotland and northern ireland, maybe one or two cropping up in North West Wales and the midlands. But with some sunshine, we will get some warmth on thursday, highs of 24 degrees. Now, as we move into the early hours of friday morning, a deep area of low pressure for this time of year will start to push its way into the south west. Its going to bring some heavy rain with it, as well. So during the early hours, well see some wet weather. This is 1 00am friday morning. Itll move its way through cornwall, the midlands, into wales. So by the Early Morning rush hour, it will be sitting across north wales, the midlands and into the north of england. The brighter yellows and greens denoting the intensity of the rainfall, and in some places we could see as much as 25 30 mm of rain. Take into account the intense showers that weve seen so far this week, theres a possibility of localised flooding as the front sits into the far north of scotland through the middle of the afternoon. A trail of showers lay in its wake, particularly out to the west, and winds gusting 50 60 mph. Sheltered eastern areas will see the best of the drier, brighter, sunnier moments, and temperatures may well peak at 25 degrees, 77 fahrenheit. But the low pressure continues to meander its way north and east, sitting across the far north of scotland, and on the southern flank, thats where well see the strongest of the winds. So on saturday, gales quite widely across england and wales. A cluster of sharp showers, particularly into the far north and west. Temperatures a little more subdued than friday, 14 23 degrees the high. We keep those showers going on sunday. They are going to be a real nuisance through the weekend across scotland, northern ireland, north west england and north wales. Sheltered eastern and south eastern areas staying largely dry.
