This was the recovery was telling you about on wall street, a much better day after wall street, a much better day after wall street, a much better day after wall street essentially suffered its worst day of the year on monday, so it is picking up from there. Margaret young from cmc market explains the seesaw in Global Markets this week. This help alleviate investors concern of an escalation of this trade war into a currency war. And i think chinas policy makers showed they are willing to come back to the negotiation table with President Trump if he is willing to remove or defer these new tariffs in september. 50 what defer these new tariffs in september. So what did you make of the extraordinary Market Reaction on monday when of course the chinese did weaken the yuan quite considerably, did you think that was an overreaction . Why are investors s0 nervous an overreaction . Why are investors so nervous when theyve surely gotten accustomed to seeing this trade war blowout . 7. 0 was long considered a threshold or a level that was going to be defended on. And this is the lowest level of currency of chinese currency in ii yea rs. Currency of chinese currency in ii years. So, the consequence to the market is huge. And also after us labelling china as a currency manipulator, that could have more punishments to come. What do you think they could be . What happens next . After the labelling, i think the us will probably, some of the tools include to stop a federal government from purchasing anything out from china. And also, they can possibly stop the financing companies, the institutions from lending money to chinese companies. So that consequence would be much more serious than now. Protesters in hong kong have been issued with a stern warning by china that attempts to quote play with fire will only backfire, the message came as the city comes under pressure from nine weekends in a row of Anti Government demonstrations. Mariko 0i joins me now from the city. Mariko, obviously a strong warning from china, but it doesnt appear to be deterring protesters at all. There were clashes again last night, but telus again what businesses youve talked to have told you about the impact that this is having on them tell us that this is having on them tell u. That this is having on them tell us again . If you speak to shop owners who close their stores on monday during that strike, you can imagine they are very supportive of the young protesters, but at the same time others are starting to get and what a little bit irritated by all the major disruptions that are being caused because of these ongoing protests. Buti being caused because of these ongoing protests. But i was also talking to some residence here last night who are starting to worry about that possibility that we were talking on newsday that china was preparing on the mainland. Perhaps some wealthy individuals in hong kong moving their wealth away from here, but expats living here are also having concerns that if that is also having concerns that if that is a possibility, do they want to leave . A possibility, do they want to leave . I think it is fair to say that hong kongs studies, as the government has been worrying about, is in danger because of these photos the status of hong kong. Is in danger because of these photos the status of hong kong. Do you think that the process will cause structural economic issues, the deep divide between rich and poor, could that fixing that help address the situation . That is what some economists are starting to say, it isnt just about chinas economists are starting to say, it isntjust about chinas control over hong kong, the widening gap between the rich and poor that you mention, that issue has been ongoing. And the fact that a lot of those young protesters dating to the streets, they are well educated, bilingual, trilingual, and yet they cant afford to live on their own taking to the streets, because the city has become so expensive and a lack of welfare is affecting the elderly, the poor. So some are saying that those problems, maybe their anger will calm down stop whether or not that. Them from taking to the streets, because they are asking for democratic reforms, it is doubtful, but definitely that is not the only issue they have to sort out. Thank you so much, mariko oi, sort out. Thank you so much, mariko 0i, in hong kong. This week weve been looking at young chief executives who are driving change in their industries. The Chinese Government has given a fierce warning protestors in hong kong, telling them those who play with fire will perish by it. 0fficials assessing the Whaley Bridge dam have warned that while some people have been allowed to return home, most of those evacuated last week must wait until experts confirm the site is absolutely safe from flooding. 1,500 people were told to leave last thursday when the dam at toddbrook reservoir was badly damaged after torrential rain. 0ur north of england correspondent Judith Moritz has the story. This is the view from an raf chinook as it makes its way across the derbyshire countryside. Its flown this journey hundreds of times, but every time has to be as exact as the last. The helicopter and dam must line up, each gravel bag dropped with precision. This is a battle which has been waged from the air, across the ground and in the water. The goal to lower the reservoir level to the point where the dam wall is no longer under threat. This morning, after six days, they did it. And tonight, the first residents were allowed back in. Its good to be home. As a small pocket of Whaley Bridge was reopened. How much of a relief is it to be back now . A lot. So much. Ifeel so much happier to be home. But, yeah, itll good to be back in my bed but the return hasnt been without problems. Utilities have been cut off at some houses. All the freezer they turned the power off the other night, so everythings gone. So, itsjust a nightmare. Most of those whose homes were evacuated are spending another night away, but police promised them that as soon as its safe, theyll be allowed back. How do you reassure residents that once theyre back at home, they wont have to leave again . I think thats a really good question, because obviously, theyre saying, well, this has happened once surely itll happen again. Theyre going to keep the water levels as low as they can. They will keep pumps on site. There are some now on pontoons in the middle of the reservoir. And they will try to keep it as low as possible, because clearly, no water means no risk, doesnt it . Theyve moved further away from disaster with every gallon pumped, through miles and miles of pipeline, a challenge so big that a new road had to be built to bring equipment in. The people of Whaley Bridge know that this is all to save their town, and many have shown their gratitude to the emergency services. Now on bbc news, sport today.
