Coastline of the United Kingdom. I started in swansea. The United Kingdom isntjust one derbyshire fire and rescue island, there is loads of separate service says it will take at least another day to pump enough islands of the United Kingdom, in fact 700 off the west coast water from a reservoir above the town of Whaley Bridge of scotland, so we have to help stabilise a dam, tackled those as well. So were the north west coast which is in danger of bursting of scotland, just about to turn and flooding the area. Residents have spent a fifth the corner having been day out of their homes on the move now for two years, because of the partial so i reckon about another 1. 5 collapse of the dam wall years before we finish. During torrential rain. Danny savage reports. We are on the mall of toddbrook reservoir kintyre now, heading. Is looking better by the day. I think people would be very the water level is going down surprised to hear that the uk coast, by about two metres every 2a hours. Including the islands below it, every road in Northern Ireland is surprisingly about 18,000 miles. And footpath is still taped up, now, to put that into perspective, if you were to fly around the world showing where no as the crow flies, residents should be. That is around 25,000 miles. Before i started this, i suffered really badly but in here are a handful of people with depression, i had who refuse to leave their homes, anxiety, and this went on for a long, long time. A decision strongly i went for a surf one day, and i remember coming out and looking down the cliffs criticised by police. And i honestlyjust thought to myself, walk home. One of them is mike friel. I know i could get out of here quick enough and get to higher ground. Im in the town, but im on a slight hill and i know in a couple of minutes, i could get up so i started walking along the coast, and i have been the hill even higher. Going for two years now. I have got a lot to thank this place for. There is no plan, it really is this simple i keep the sea to my left hand side, and eventually that will take me people dont seem to have realised that this was life threatening. Around to where i need to be. Margot is one of those whos i go as far as my legs can take each listened to the advice day, and i camp when i think its and moved out. She is frustrated that some time to camp, and i repeat people have refused to go. The process the next day. Its a selfish move, and its implying that they know ill show you where i slept last more than the environment agency, night, not complaining at all. The engineers who are working here, jet, my dog, i rescued and they dont. The aim, of course, is to get everybody back into their homes behind these lines as soon as possible. But talking to officials here, what they dont want to do is let people return and then find a reason to have to move them out again. Her on the way. The emergencys not over yet, not until the specialists tell us the dam is safe, which is why we keep pumping water out. But i have to say, thursday night, i had very little sleep because i was expecting a failure of that dam wall. It was in a critical position. She wasnt in the best nick the labour leaderjeremy when i first had her. Corbyn visited today. She was very thin, very skinny. He expressed sympathy to residents but there was immediate and called for an enquiry. Connection betweenjet and i. I felt that kind theres still a lot of work of brokenness in her. Being done, but if things continue that maybe i had felt before. We bonded immediately. At this pace, the waters should be some of the stuff she tackles down to a safe level by tomorrow. On this coast i wouldnt ask another danny savage, bbc human to do. We have such complete trust for each other that if i go and do something news, Whaley Bridge. Or climb something before i know it shes shooting past me because she knows if im now on bbc news, its time doing it shell do it. For the travel show. Yeah, just arrived in gretna. Which means im in scotland. Coming up on this weeks travel show we are in but, yeah, im stupidly happy. The United Kingdom, a place that attracts almost a0 million visitors a year. The wonderful thing about the United Kingdom is that every single part of the United Kingdom that you go to there is a change and its not subtle, more than half of them it is there in your face. Will head to london, but this week were going off mother of zeus. The beaten path, exploring some good afternoon, guys. Its a really wet one today. Of britains best kept secrets, now being discovered by travellers. Nice to have the scottish weather back. We begin in Northern Ireland, oh, my goodness where forgotten places hailstones and they hurt like hell. Are being visited thanks to a hit television programme. Some of my favourite moments on this walk have been when my tents been pull, loose yes well done you. Before heading to england where cat getting smashed from side to side is retracing the footsteps and ive peeked out and ive watched of the men who carved out the lake the seas and the waters districts dramatic landscape. I dont know if my legs are shaking, because im cold and i see how powerful it is. Or because im nervous. Then were in scotland with a man whos on a mission to walk oh, my word. The entire coastline of the uk. We start in Northern Ireland, i feel so old and haggard. In county down, because here, yeah, obviously im not in places once rarely visited, something unexpected is happening. Now, people are coming from across the world and its all because of one television programme. Feeling well at all. Game of thrones. One of the biggest in history. I started this walk with £10 and two days worth of rations. Id just given up the house so i had nothing, really. Ive pretty much relied on foraging and this kind of stuff. We start in Northern Ireland, on anglesey, i soon realised that in county down, because here, i did not know enough. In places once rarely visited, i ended up doing the full 126 miles with nothing to eat. Something unexpected is happening. Ive been coming around anglesey now, people are coming for i dont know from across the world since sunday, monday, its a cracker. Im a bit annoyed at myself and its all because of one that i smashed it round. Television programme. But i had my reasons. Game of thrones. And, yeah, that was a really big mistake. I lost a lot of weight and was very ill after that week. Lesson learned. Making my way up the west coast. One of the biggest in history. Its all downhill once you get in the fantasy series, of which the eighth and final season there. Good afternoon, folks. Concluded this year, look at this. Different houses battle to claim one ultimate throne. It was here in remote locations im on an island on my own and this family came up south of the busy capital of belfast and brought me christmas dinner by boat. That many of the programmes most i am going to go over iconic scenes were filmed. And where some of its cast and say hello to them. Can still be found. Bear with me. Ok, so i have a confession i have gone from being one of the most isolated people i am a giant game of thrones geek. You would ever meet, you know, and im super excited, shutting myself in a bedroom because this place has to be top for three weeks, not seeing anybody, scared to go to the shops, of the list for any true superfan. Welcome to castle ward, to being the most confident, or to what many tv viewers most outgoing, happiest person youll ever meet. Will know as winterfell. I do think this is a lifestyle now. So this will never end for me. Now, you know, its a great lifestyle. I dont have tvs or anything. I dont need one, do i . And well, when in winterfell. Welcome back. And as we continue our look into the far flung corners of the uk, im back with the game of thrones fans in county down. Its amazing as were walking arrrgh evening my lady, through here how many people where do you hail from . Are wearing the big capes for game of thrones, clearly here because game from london. Of thrones was filmed here. London. Its such a beautiful area. Did you come to this part of the world because of game of thrones . Yeah, idid. And which house do you represent . I mean, Northern Ireland is a fascinating country. Lots of history. Oh, im not sure i have a house. House of larwood. House of larwood, never heard of them, sounds like something the nights watch but i think if not for would have dragged in. I believe you are here game of thrones, i probably would not to learn how to do archery. Have come all this way. I need people to hunt or to fight. So, really, are you like a big fan . 0k. Are you up to the task . On a scale of one i hope so. I hope so too, otherwise to ten, like an 11 im 2a, travelling alone, my father grew up during the troubles so he thought i was there is a penalty. Absolutely insane. But he has seen all my photos 0h. Oh, a beheading. And just thinks that seems measured. It has been a great trip. Absolutely, because you are no good to me here at winterfell for three decades, up until 1998, if you cant hunt and you cant fight. Northern ireland endured a violent i will do my best. And deadly conflict thank you. In this series, no character is safe from a grisly end, so it never hurts to know known as the troubles. What youre doing with a bow and arrow. Since then, a kind of dark tourism select your arrows by the tip, exploring the locations and murals never by the feathers and never of the conflict further down the shaft. Has been popular here. But for some local people, 0k . Think of it coming out of a quiver, there is now a more positive story Three Fingers on the drawing string to tell about what and then draw back their country has to offer. So that it brings to your right eye. Loose so, here we have summer, all right. Which is bran starks dire wolf. Now, youre going to i hit actual thing go meet him later on. Your first arrow ever this is obviously hes not a puppy anymore, and you hit the target. But hes stilljust 0k. Archer ready. As cute, trust me. Draw hold. Loose ah, the runt of the litter. Look at that. That ones yours, snow. The big draw behind my coach tour were local celebrities. Yes well done you. William played a white walker yeah so this place used to be in the programme, a farm and yet now its but it is his two dogs that people a huge tourist attraction. How did that happen . Come from around the world to meet. Who do we have here . This is odin and this is thor. We are where game of thrones summer, bran starks dire wolf, started, so its the Perfect Place and grey wind, to start your journey, rob starks dire wolf. Arent you beautiful. Hes so fluffy to go on and do some of the other yeah. Sites that are around. Shall we take them for a walk . Yes, they have gone off to croatia, yeah. Do you want to take this one . Yes, they have gone off to iceland, sure. It has sort of changed yes, they have gone off to morocco and so on, from being only a couple of dogs and thats fine, but most to suddenly youve of it is shot here. And it has turned into what we now got a tourism operation now. Know as screen tourism, well, you know, peoplejust actually something we have never had before. Started wanting to meet them. Yes we have the giants causeway, they contacted us through social a unesco World Heritage site media and so we decided that instead and it is beautiful, and all that, of them coming to our house, but people used to go we had to make it more official. There and there alone, and then they would take off. So my brothers and i actually started up our own tour company. Now they come to see many other parts of our province. So, tell me a little bit about the impact game of thrones and well be finding out more has had on your community. About these sites later county down, i think, in the programme. Was one of the least visited but first we had across the irish tourist wise counties in ireland. Sea to englands lake district, where cat moh reports. Here in the uks biggest and so now i think it is national park, in the mountainous one of the highest rugged lake district, because of game of thrones. You will find the green and beautiful landscapes this like, you look like country is known for. A game of thrones extra. But theres also something else. Do you buy into it . Are you a game of thrones junkie . Scars to the mountainsides tell a story of a defining Industrial Area for the country i was actually contracted to keep this long while filming. And the communities in this region. My whole family have long hair and beards, but anyway. At the uks last working slate mine, yeah, i am a massive game of thrones fan. Well, while i finish my walk with odin and thor, travellers can come to walk we end with cat whos getting hands on at the slate mine. So, apparently, the traditional in the treacherous footsteps miners practice of splitting slate used to take up the mountain. They call it the via ferrata. Has barely changed in generations. In the workshop, they now split but first i wanted to see what life 100 tons of it a year. Was like for these miners working deep within the network of mining tiles before modern machinery paul here is riving the rock transformed the practice of extracting the slate. Thats our word for splitting. Its a bit low down here. Wow look at this and the beauty of this rock is that it does split so beautifully into roofing slates. Now, i have an idea. Would you like to have a go yourself . Sure you would . Its an absolutely amazing space. Will i have to pay for i can hear my voice the slate if i ruin it . Echoing off the rocks. Absolutely it represents a huge area i am told it takes a lifetime where they found an awful lot of good rock, and it also for rivers to learn this skill. Represents some 11 miles about there. But im not sure even that of tunnels and caverns. I cant imagine how long it would be enough for me. Would have taken to have carved out so, ijust start anywhere in the middle a space this huge in here. Rather than on the edge . Its a huge amount of time. You didnt see that paint a picture for me of what it laughter. Would have been like back you want to have it dead straight. In its heyday. When was that . More . You just want to make a line. Sojust keep going. Its actually quite tricky keeping the chisel straight. Back in its heyday, after the First World War when production can you hear that change . Was getting going again, and it built up to some 2,000 tons yes. Of roofing slate produced per year. I can feel it in my hands as well. And that would have been in places like this, i can hear it. Lit by early carbide lamps, which was the next generation of lamp idid it there you are. Just give it a little after using just candlelight. Twist and. There you go. Youve just split we would have the dust of the rock a slate beautifully. It looks absolutely glorious, that. Ifeel like ive done in their lungs, and they always a little workout. Have the potential, weve not actually started when you are working the rock, the miners route, have we . No back with my guide, jenny, for it to come down onto your head its time to continue which would have been covered in a cloth cap. Onto the old miners back out of the mine, route up the mountain. It is time to head up i can see why you love to the via ferrata. Climbing around here. So the old miners route starts way over there, its pretty fantastic and the only way to get there is on this narrow bridge. And its always changing, my mouths suddenly gone dry. The environment, wherever you go in the lake district, so yeah. And it gets worse its me first. It was changing just then. It was. Ok, here we go. So the via ferrata, also known as the miners route, goes all the way up there. Is that actually what they did . So, this incline that you can this is where it gets interesting. See there is basically ah. Following the footsteps of the miners that they used to take to work. These added bits that we have on the fell side as well so thats just fun. So, i think im ready. Are you . You are doing really well. No shall we do this . 0k. How high are we . Yes, lets do this. Dont look down. 0k. I dont know if my legs are shaking because im cold, because im nervous, we are 3,000 foot above sea or because theyre really exhausted level, approximately. From the bridge still. We are quite high up from the road, just watch that clip there, cat. Just the fact that the cars are like micro 0k. Machines from up here. Things are getting real now. Yeah, these cars look tiny. While im safe and hooked on, i know that one wrong step on these probably isnt the best conversation to be having whilst we go over this. Thin metal bars could see me no. At over 150 metres, this bridge test my harness much more than id like. Is the longest of its kind in britain, and as i creep my way across, i could not be more aware of every remaining step to go. Ok, i can do this, doing the miners wouldnt have my best ballet feet. Climbed the wall this way. This is just for fun. Oop 0h but im told this section does help travellers get a sense of the type of dangerous terrain just keep breathing. They faced every day. Ok, all right. This is really hard. Make sure you leave a bit of space oh, gosh. With the wind lurching the bridge from side to side, i have to be so careful again for your next foot. Where i put my feet. Thats it. Oh, my gosh then step up. This wind how do i do this next bit . You can use the rock again. Ahh 0k . Yeah, just waiting for just a big step. The wind blow past me. I dont know whats worse. Itll pass by. Here we go. But, finally, im up and onto the miners footpath. Thats it just making our way if i actually stop and think about it, the view is, its amazing up here. Up the incline now. But to be honest, i havent really so, this is part of the well trodden been concentrating on the view so much as my feet and my arms route they used to take . Indeed. So i dont fall into the view. And actually, it is really quite long. Now i can appreciate the view. 00 12 23,537 4294966103 13 29,430 so pretty walking the miners footpath, its amazing to think what this must have been like four generations of people working this incredible landscape. Ok, it sounds good and as my time in Northern Ireland comes to a close, i know that its thanks to amazing people like the ones weve met along the way that so many hidden places this country has to offer will continue to be revealed. Wow. What a view. Look at that. The bottom of the world. Is that scotland over there . It is it is scotland you can see in the distance. Hello. If youre in search of dry, settled, summer weather, well, im afraid you probably wont find it in this weather forecast. Certainly not while low pressure is in charge, and that is what we have in the heart of this swirl of cloud that you can see on our earlier satellite picture. This area of low pressure is going to drift its way eastwards across the British Isles over the next couple of days. It will provide some very heavy, thundery downpours. There will always be some spells of sunshine in between. So, many eastern parts of england and eastern scotland starting the day dry, but the showers already in the west will swing their way eastwards as the day wears on. Some of them will be heavy, some of them will be thundery, there could even be some localised disruption. You can see in between the showers, though, some spells of sunshine. It will be quite breezy in the south, light winds in the north, so across scotland, these showers will be pretty slow moving. Some locations could get a real deluge and temperatures ranging from 17 degrees in stornoway to 23 in london. Now, as we go through tuesday evening, many of the showers will fade, but some will continue through the night, particularly across western and Northern Areas and some of those showers could still be heavy and thundery. Temperatures generally between 11 and 1a degrees, it may getjust a bit cooler than that across some parts of Northern England and scotland, where the skies are clear and the winds are light. So, we go into wednesday and, really, its a game of spot the difference. Again, there will be some of these heavy downpours, most plentiful and heaviest across scotland where there could be some hail and thunder mixed in. Not as many showers down towards the south and those temperatures again between 17 and 23 degrees. Now, if you are looking for a drier day, thursday may fit the bill because our area of low pressure is starting to drift away and you can just about this little bump in the isobars here. Thats a ridge of High Pressure trying to take charge of our weather. So, on thursday, there will be more in the way of dry weather and some spells of sunshine. Still the potential for one or two showers, particularly through scotland and Northern England. Temperatures, well, just a touch higher. The winds light as well, butjust behind me, down to the south west, you can see some wet weather gathering. That is the start of another very unsettled spell to take us into the weekend. Bands of rain driving northwards during friday and this area of low pressure taking up residence by saturday, bringing some showers or even some longer spells of rain. Some unusually brisk winds as well, so if you have plans for the weekend, its worth staying tuned to the forecast.
