The el paso shooting has been described by the states governor as one of the most deadly days in the history of texas. The shooting happened at about 10. 30 in the morning at a Walmart Store near the cielo vista mall, a few miles from the us mexican border. Police arrived at the scene six minutes later, and a 21 year old white man was arrested at the scene. Hes been named by us media as patrick crusius. Police said a four page document, believed to have been posted online by the shooter, espoused White Nationalist and racist views, blaming immigrants and hispanics for taking awayjobs. The document was apparently published less than 20 minutes before Police Received the first emergency calls. Parents were shopping with their children when they were told to run. The Walmart Store was packed with thousands of people when a gunman started firing discreetly. Indiscriminately. 20 people killed, 26 others heard, many according to the governor of texas sustained life threatening injuries. On a day that would have been a normal day for someone to leisurely go shopping, it turned into one of the most deadly days in the history of texas. Lives were taken who should still be with us today. 0ne white man has been arrested and taken into custody. Hes been identified by local media as 21 year old patrick crusius. Police say they are examining the portability that this attack was a hate crime. They are investigating possible links with a White Nationalist manifesto that was published anonymously online, claiming the attack was targeted at the hispanic community. It is pointing at this stage in time to a hate crime, we will be investigating that with other federal authorities, we are looking at potential capital murder charges for this individual. El paso sits on the border with mexico, its population is more than 80 hispanic. Its become a focal point in the debate over immigration in the united states. This is someone who came from outside our community to do us harm, a community that has shown nothing but generosity and kindness to the least among us. Mass shootings are not uncommon here, exactly one week ago a six year old and a 13 year old were among those killed in a gunman opened fire at a festival in northern california. But people are shocked that it happened here in el paso, considered to be one of america s safest cities and they are shocked at such young, innocent lives were lost and so many. But amid the horror and the pain and the great, great sadness, there are demands again for something to be done to stop it. 0ur sympathies go out to the families of the victims. Democratic president ial candidate beto orourke, who is from el paso, linked this shooting to what he called increased levels of hatred and racism that is being seen in the us. He laid blame for at least part of that at president trumps door. President trump has condemned the shooting, calling it tragic, hateful and cowardly. Sophie long, bbc news. Are we getting a clearer picture of what happened in walmart yesterday . Well, we are starting to piece this altogether. What we know, what we have been told is that the shooter actually started firing his weapon outside in the parking lot of the walmart, then he walked inside the store and just kept firing. We believe this was an ak47 kept firing. We believe this was an ak lfl type Assault Rifle that he was carrying. We also know that the store, the time, was packed with back to school shoppers. Authorities are telling us there were more than 1000 people in and around this store when this happened. So, some terrifying moments for all of them, whether they were towards the front of the store when this happened or towards the back, where they could still hear those gunshots. Just a horrible event for these folks you have to live through. And what is the latest condition check on the injured . Right, what we know is that 26 is the official number we have been told, 26 injured. We should point out that a number of them are still in Critical Condition this morning. So, there certainly is some concern that the death toll from the shooting could rise in the coming days, depending on how those folks are doing in the hospital. There are also some reports that perhaps because this is on the border with mexico, a border town here, that there may have been some people who were injured, but did not report their injuries, did not go to the hospital. So, 26 of the official number for now, and we will see if that holds in the next day or so. What about the man responsible for these shootings, and suggestions of a motive . The police chief was talking about the possibility of it being a hate crime . Thats right, this is a 21 year old man, and he wrote some sort of manifesto that was posted online, really just sort of manifesto that was posted online, reallyjust minutes before the shooting began. They are looking at the manifesto very closely. They say there are some references there that indicate that he may have been targeting hispanics specifically in the shooting. And we also want to point out that this suspect is not a local resident here. He lives in alan, texas, just north of dallas, texas. It is a nine hour drive. 0fficials texas. It is a nine hour drive. Police are investigating whether a White Nationalist manifesto posted online, which says the attack deliberately targeted the hispanic community, was written by the gunman. 80 of the population in el paso are of hispanic origin. The ages and genders of all these people injured and killed are numerous and the age groups, the situation, needless to say, its horrific. It has a nexus at this point in time to a hate crime, the fbi will be looking into that with all the federal authorities, right now we are looking at potential capital murder charges for this individual. Right now, we have a manifesto from this individual that indicates to some degree it has a nexus to potential hate crime. The police chief in el paso, speaking several hours ago now in the News Conference that was given in the immediate aftermath of the shootings. There are more details emerging since the incident took place, at about 10. 30 local time in el paso, on saturday morning. As Chris Martinez was saying, a really busy shopping mall, a busy walmart, a very large branch of walmart. 0ne of the people there was there with her parents. Victoria balderrama was shopping in the mall with her parents when the shooting broke out. They were in lockdown in the Shopping Centre for an hour before a swat team arrived to help them escape. We were there about 30 minutes when they announced they were closing down the store. Locked the doors, which i didnt really think much of at the time and then they told us to huddle in the corner of the store and thats when i really started to worry. Because i didnt think it was, you know, normal to be doing that. If it was something so minor. But they let us know that there was an active shooter inside the mall, on the second level and ijust went into survival mode, i mean, it was so scary being in that kind of situation. Being from el paso, i was born and raised here, nothing like this ever, i mean ever, would have imagined, could happen in my hometown. They were going to try and evacuate us through the exit ofjcpenney and so we waited for about an hour when swat teams showed up and they ordered us to put our hands up and run through the building and exit. So we walked throuthcpenney, through the mall and out of deliverance where we waited in the parking lot. And we waited for about three hours, the Police Officers they told us to be patient, they were doing everything they could, trying to provide some shade. El paso is so hot, triple digits, i mean, it was a waiting game, i guess. We assumed they were looking for these active shooters. I just really have no words, honestly. Because ive never been in a situation like this. And i didnt know how to feel, and looking at people around me, people were crying, panicking, and i really was just thinking the worst, you know, what am i going to do . How am i going to get out of the situation . Making sure my parents were all right and we were going to be ok. Youre just so indisposed to these people that have guns and are shooting at you, they are targeting you. And you know, theres a lot of talk that they were targeting because of, you know, the race, you know, most of the people here in el paso are hispanic. And insight from one of the eyewitnesses to the shooting. Theres been a second mass shooting in the united states, just hours after the killings in el paso. Police in dayton, ohio say nine people were killed and at least 16 wounded by a gunman who opened fire near the city centre. I was at a venue only a few blocks away from the shooting it was literally about six, seven minute walk away from where i was. And when did you know that something was wrong . I didnt, we were just all in there, and then the guy he was running the show came on stage and said he had to cut the show early, because there was a shooting going on in oregon district, and five people at the time had been shot. And we all need to evacuate. Im, like, 0k, five people, sounds like its crazy. You know, get in my car and leave. And i kind of have to drive by the oregon district, and i see a lot of cops, i see multiple ambulances leaving and going to the scene. And then im looking on social media and i see that this isntjust five people being shot, its more people, and its an actual mass shooting going on, right now, as im driving past. As you mentioned, to viewers at home, there are 16 people at area hospitals right now. The death toll is expected to rise, unfortunately. We know that the scene is on a grid lockdown. Police are going centimetre by centimetre, inch by inch, looking for any evidence that might be helping them connect the dots as to what this motivation was. When we asked the police chief what his motivation for the gunman might have been, he said he didnt know at this time, but they were going to piece it together and find out. But when it comes to a general election, and when it comes to stopping a new deal brexit, it is clear that, across parliament, mps, including tory mps, want to stop a no deal brexit.
