It is a cooler and a cloudier weekend for all of us. There will be some rain around too, some of it quite heavy, but its not going to be a complete washout for all of us. Join me laterfor all the details. Its saturday 27th july. Our top story donald trump says the uk and United States are working on what he called a very substantial post brexit trade deal. The president spoke with borisjohnson on the phone yesterday and claimed trade could be worth up to five times what it is now. Boris and i just spoke. I congratulated him and hes all set to go. Hes gonna be i think hell be do a greatjob. Were working already on a trade agreement. And i think it will be a very substantial trade agreement. You know, we can do with the uk we can do three to four times we were actually impeded by their relationship with the european union. We were very much impeded on trade. Lets get more on this now from our Political Correspondent tom barton, whos in our london newsroom this morning. President trump is obviously a fan of borisjohnson and brexit but trade deals can be tricky to negotiate . You are right. Very big promises there from donald trump. The two men have agreed to start negotiations as soon as possible after the uk leave the eu, which is the earliest point they are legally allowed to start negotiating. As you say, these trade deals can prove incredibly difficult. Negotiations have not yet started and already there are controversies around access for American Companies to the nhs, the quality of meat that may be imported from the usa. The two men clearly hope to build a strong personal relationship. President trump has heaped praise on borisjohnson, calling him written among other things, these negotiations have can ta ke yea rs things, these negotiations have can take years and often they boil down to Technical Details rather than the strength of a relationship between two men for britains trump. We know restau ra nt two men for britains trump. We know restaurant and is in the north west, he will be talking about trying to spread wealth and spread Infrastructure Spending amongst other things. What are we expecting him to focus on . Thats right. Alongside talking about brexit, he is keen to also highlight the things he wants to do elsewhere in the economy. Today, like you say, in a big speech in the north west, he will be talking about improving relics between leeds and manchester, new Trans Pennine train route. He says a deal to get that started could be signed by the autumn. It will also promise to even more quickly improve what he calls unglamorous Services Like buses. That announcement has been welcomed by the cbi and the Northern Powerhouse partnership labours mayor of manchester and the burnham went out the government has promised to improve those links already and he has questioned the ability of borisjohnson to actually achieve getting it done. Absolutely. Tom, thank you. Tom with the details and of course we will give you all of the details of that speech, the Prime Minister in the north west, with a series of announcements due over the weekend. Sports direct says it regrets rescuing house of fraser and warned that there will be more store closures. Sports direct boss mike ashley said the problems at the Department Store were nothing short of terminal. Andy moore reports. For house of fraser staff worried about their future, theres little reason for optimism in this set of results. The chain of stores employed around 17,000 people went mike ashley rescued it last year, and saved 31 of its 59 stores from closure. A handful of shutdowns since, but now, theres the prospect of more closures to come. The Smaller Stores are especially at risk. Mike ashley said about the house of fraser buyout but he added mr ashley said some stores were still losing money, even though their rent had been cut to nothing. Sports direct results were due to be published 11 days ago, but they were delayed time and time again. The reason for that now appears to be this huge £605 million tax bill demanded by the belgian authorities. The Company Believes its unlikely it will actually have to pay that full amount. And theres also been a loss of £55 million at house of fraser since that company was taken over. Mike ashley said with the gift of hindsight, he mightve made a different decision about stepping to rescue the chain. Andy moore, bbc news. Two people have died and a number of others have been injured after a balcony collapsed at a nightclub in the south korean city of gwangju in the early hours of this morning. The injured include several athletes competing at the world swimming championships being held in the same city. 0ur correspondent laura bicker joins us from seoul. What more do we know . Awful news. This was a kind of 2 tiered nightclub so the bar was on the bottom and on the top there was a drinking and dancing area and according to eyewitnesses, about two am it just seems according to eyewitnesses, about two am itjust seems that one of the balconies has totally given way. According to one of the members of the new zealand mens water polo team, he said one minute he was dancing and the next he fell five or six feet. He said the team did what they could. Two South Koreans were taken to hospital and they, sadly, later died from their injuries. What we do know is 17 people in total we re we do know is 17 people in total were injured. Nine of whom appear to be athletes competing at those National Aquatics championships. When it comes to the athletes themselves, four were from the United States and two appear to have been from new zealand. The injuries at this stage do not appear to be serious. Laura, thank you. Railway passengers planning journeys between london and nottingham and sheffield have been urged not to travel as disruption caused by hot weather enters a third day. East Midlands Trains customers have been told to expect a significantly reduced service to and from st pancras due to repair work on overhead lines damaged by the heat. A revised timetable will also operate on several local routes because of industrial action by the rmt union. Fresh demonstrations are expected to take place in hong kong later, in protest at the Police Response to attacks on pro democracy campaigners by alleged gang members. More than a0 people were injured in the assault last week. Its the latest escalation in weeks of clashes between police and protestors. Lets join our correspondent Stephen Mcdonell in hong kong now. Stephen, good morning. These protests have been going on for awhile and this latest demonstration is about the Police Response, protesters say it too slow . Exactly, iam in protesters say it too slow . Exactly, i am in the Yuen Long Area where today there will be an illegal march. You will notice when we are on air activists coming through in their black t shirts which is now their black t shirts which is now the uniform. I say illegal because the uniform. I say illegal because the police have not given permission for this much and yet they have said they will defy that and still turn out here, returning to the scene of last weekends attack from alleged triad gang members on protesters. So they are coming here and saying they wa nt they are coming here and saying they wantan enquiry they are coming here and saying they want an enquiry into those attacks last weekend. They want to know why the police took so long to arrive. And already, they have had something ofan and already, they have had something of an apology from the number two in the government here who has said they did not handle it well. We know people are coming because you can see these pro democracy messages on the wall here, already activists have been gathering here this morning, putting these messages up, and within the hour they will start marching. Riot police are also on scene and they have said anyone here will be acting illegally so we are expecting more clashes here, essentially violent. Stephen, thank you for now and we will get more from you later. Stephen mcdonnell that with more on the protest, and we will check in with him a little later. The summer heatwave has broken records across the world, and not even the arctic has escaped the dramatic rise in temperatures. There have been hundreds of wildfires within forests in the arctic circle, including siberia, alaska and greenland. Plumes of smoke from the fires can be seen from space. Ramzan karmali has more. Wildfires are ravaging the arctic. Areas of northern siberia, northern scandinavia and greenland have been engulfed in flames. Lightning often triggers fires in the region but this year, they are lasting longer. This fire at grouse creek in alaska has been burning since the 10th ofjuly. So far, over two million acres of forest land have been scorched in the state. The temperature was much higher than the average, and also things like the soil moisture and the amount of precipitation is much lower than the average. What this means is its much drier, much warmer, so when there is an ignition, then the fires have been able to persist and spread quite quickly, and endure. Arctic fires are common between may and october but higher temperatures, blamed on Climate Change, have meant the fires this year have been more intense. Global satellites are now tracking a swathe of new and ongoing wildfires within the arctic circle. Smoke is affecting large areas, engulfing some places completely. Cities in eastern russia have noted a significant fall in air quality, with many people seeking medical help. Translation smoke is a horror. Youre choking and feel dizzy because the smell of the smoke is very strong. The fires are releasing copious volumes of Carbon Dioxide, which Scientists Say will make our planet even warmer. That means wildfires like these will become even more common. Ramzan karmali, bbc news. Drivers in the us state of newjersey has a lucky escape when a runaway tyre caused a motorway crash. This is it. The tyre can be seen rolling along the road after coming off the back of a lorry. After going over the barrier, it struck a car in oncoming traffic. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt. Ican i can only imagine. The speedy it gets up to as well. Seeing that coming towards you, can you imagine driving and. . Noone coming towards you, can you imagine driving and. . Noone was coming towards you, can you imagine driving and. . Noone was hurt. That is the main thing. Exactly. Its been a big week in politics, with borisjohnson and his new cabinet setting out their promises on brexit and policing. Today, the new Prime Minister will pledge a new high speed rail line between manchester and leeds. It comes a day after the labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn announced he would make a multibillion pound investment in tidal power on the river mersey if he was elected. You caught up with him during his visit to the region yesterday, and you started by asking him. . About all of the plans he has for the the river at here in the mersey has a huge river flow the river at here in the mersey has a huge riverflow anyway the river at here in the mersey has a huge river flow anyway but it has a huge river flow anyway but it has a massive title rise and fall and so the possibilities of a barrage across the mersey can generate a very large amount of electricity. It would also create jobs in its construction and management and also create a whole Technology Centre and it is part of the green industrial revolution. We cannot come on pumping Carbon Dioxide into the air without expecting consequences. It will create jobs but the thing that will create jobs but the thing that will make a difference to spending on railways and roads . Those other things that will change peoples lives every day so why not prioritise those. It is not in either or. This will take some time to develop and construct, it will not happen in the next of years, the studies have to be done and commitments made. We are here to make those commitments to support the building of it but at the same time, we need the electrification of the railway line across the north from hull to liverpool, from liverpool to manchester, and so on. We need much better interconnectivity across the north and we have already said we will invest in crossrail for the north. You will appreciate the scepticism about these and we had about the Northern Powerhouse and it didnt happen so why should people believe you . We are absolutely committed to it and you . We are absolutely committed to itand our you . We are absolutely committed to it and our transformation funds will be regionally based and not all based in whitehall and when the government set out its powerhouse for the north it had an office in whitehall to administer it. We would move the treasury to the north, moving an awful lot to the north in order to ensure that that fairness of National Investment begins to be a reality. I want to talk about brexit because borisjohnson yesterday said i have a clear plan now for brexit. He says you have turned into a remain. Are you . All he is offered in his red Leadership Campaign since is a cliff edge brexit and behind that, a trade deal with the United States which will mean with the United States which will m ea n loss with the United States which will mean loss of regulations, loss of rights and indeed, the danger to the National Health service with American Healthcare firms coming in. We are saying if he comes back to parliament with a nodal brexit, we will absolutely vote against it and do our best to block that. Many people are confused about where you stand on the issue. It is not clear and you are not clearly coming out for remain and you are not clearly coming upfor for remain and you are not clearly coming up for leave. Johnson comes up coming up for leave. Johnson comes up with a nodal brexit and we have said it is dangerous forjobs and industry and all of our regulations and rights. That would be a disaster and rights. That would be a disaster and in those circumstances we would obviously vote against that and ask that a referendum be held and put to parliament and in those circumstances we would campaign and vote for remain. Rowing speculation were getting into the territory of calling a general election and wonder whether for you it is calling a general election and wonder whetherfor you it is better to fight a general election in or out of the european union. To fight a general election in or out of the european unionlj to fight a general election in or out of the european union. I won a general election as soon as we can so we can general election as soon as we can so we can guide our own future in this i so we can guide our own future in this i want. The moment we are due to come out at the end of 0ctober. If there is an election before that, fine, we can determine our own future and negotiate accordingly. This is a government, a very right wing government, a very aggressive government with very much free market economic ideas at its heart was up i think they should have a general election for the people of this country can decide do they want to go down the road of investment and inclusion for the future with labour they to go down the road of tax cuts for the rich the road of tax cuts for the rich the tories. That was Jeremy Corbyn yesterday in liverpool. The Prime Minister, borisjohnson, yesterday in liverpool. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, in yesterday in liverpool. The Prime Minister, borisjohnson, in the north west today for a series of announcements. Lets talk now to the conservative mp david morris, and labours lucy powell mp. It has been a very busy week. Welcome. It does feel like we are in a campaigning period now out of a general election. Jeremy corbyn talking about bringing total power to the north west, borisjohnson promising to put more money into the transplant and service between manchester and leeds. It feels like we have heard this before, lucy. Certainly the boris announcement today. Even hearing you now announcing that as Prime Minister borisjohnson takes announcing that as Prime MinisterBoris Johnson takes you back, cant quite believe he is Prime Minister. And that we are there already. This week has felt like the beginning of the general election. All the pre general election phase. I was was Jeremy Corbyn last night at a rally in manchester. And that is what it felt like. It felt like a general election rally. We are getting the promises and pledges. I think for my own party my message last night was with all now got to galvanizing get behind jeremy with all now got to galvanizing get behindjeremy and with all now got to galvanizing get behind jeremy and unite and take that message up to the country galvanise and. We could lose a general election to Boris Johnson. We are told from borisjohnson that he will not call a general election, that there is nothing happening before the end of october. But theresa may said exactly the same thing, didnt she . Should we believe him . For various reasons are believe there is not going to be an election this side of neck sum at the very earliest. The reason for that is we have to get brexit out of the way. Next summer. I im not so sure we will live on the 31st. But even if we do have to go with no deal we would have to have exhausted every avenue to even get it passed the threshold, even on my side of the benches. So the jury is out with me. Boris says he will take us out on the 31st. He seems fervent, he seems genuine. Lets see if he does . Is this is day negotiating strategy, though. Theresa may was forced to put all the cars on the table. Saying this is where we stand as a country. Some are saying that the idea that Boris Johnson country. Some are saying that the idea that borisjohnson is saying come hell or high water we believe on the 31st is a very useful tactic when it comes to negotiating to try to get further concessions. And it is working with europeans. They have had emergency meetings. It has given them the jitters. It is fact. But it is an interview that no negotiation when all is said and done. It is a negotiation. If you can get us out on the 31st i will be the happiest man in britain along with him and all the other mps on my side of the benches, because we are in this coma at the moment and we need to get out of it and wake up and move on with the domestic agenda. Boris johnson has been accused of lacking detail. But were not saying that most detailfrom the but were not saying that most detail from the labour party in terms of what happens next. Are they backing remain, yes, no, yes, but understood what circumstances we dont really know. Our position for the last three years, and it is difficult to navigate this, is one of trying to unite the country. I think the politics of division have been either for the 52 or for the 48 has caused us many of the problems we are now in. We have ambitions to be the government. We wa nt ambitions to be the government. We want to represent the whole country. And so we are trying to do that as best we can. Hedging your bets until you know what happens on the 31st . It is not hedging our bets. We are a party of remain, overwhelmingly as mps and as a party with v0 voted remain in the referendum. We have had a referendum now and that result is well known. Im not sure that another referendum would really resolve that. Now we are in a high stakes situation. Ross thomson, as you say, is wrapping up this no deal rhetoric borisjohnson. We will do absolutely everything we can to stop that. It will be really damaging for the country. It is hard to see him carrying on with a majority of just to see him carrying on with a majority ofjust one or two. It is a fragile majority at that. We have dozens of tory backbenchers, on the backbenchers, who are likely to be quite rebellious. By the thing we will have a general election in the next few months but i do thing. David, what has it been like this week. We keep hearing about the honeymoon period. Everyone is prepared to give the new Prime Minister a little breathing space to see what he can come up with. I wanted, down there in westminster, what is the feeling in the house about how this will play out over the next few weeks . I want. About how this will play out over the next few weeks . I want. It is a bit shocking in some respects that we have a new Prime Minister. Normally we have elections and a Prime Ministerfalls or normally we have elections and a Prime Minister falls or party leader or whatever, this is halfway through. This would be something similarto through. This would be something similar to what happened when gordon brown came in. He has a different agenda altogether. We want to put more police on the beat. That is all good but it will take years to do that. And the economist are looking into what boris is actually saying. He said he would adopt more or less everything jeremy hunt s formulated. As you can see, i am one of the, i am giving formulated. As you can see, i am one of the, lam giving him formulated. As you can see, i am one of the, i am giving him a loss of goodwill, i want to see him come through. But at the end of the day, think the backbenchers are still wondering, you know, can we pull this off . And i think he has given them a lot of hope. They really do. Think his first performance in the commons was quite good, but its where we go from here and how long it will last. And, lucy, when Jeremy Corbyn said to me yesterday i want a general election as soon as possible emely telle s labour party faces now, if it is before we leave the european union, not only do you have to convince the electorate on your brexit policy, but also on your domestic policy, better policing, infrastructure, spending, surely it is easier to wait until after because then you only have to commit them on your policies are not on the brexit issue . It is quite hard to call an election before that brexit date of the 31st of october, but people underestimated Jeremy Corbyn at the last election in 2017. I think we started out 20 points more behind in the polls. We are not in a position now. And jeremy is a very formidable campaigner, whatever other peoples opinions are of him, he isa other peoples opinions are of him, he is a formidable campaigner. And out he is a formidable campaigner. And our manifesto in the 2017 election was an incredibly popular one, it was an incredibly popular one, it was about investing in people, in places, in our public services. And thats what people want to see. So when we get onto that domestic agenda we feel very confident indeed. But lets see what happens with brexit over the coming weeks. We will keep our feet to the fire of boris. He will really struggle to get anything through parliament unless its a really good deal for britain. Fascinating, isnt it . It will be an interesting few weeks. For now, thank you both. Very nice to see you. Certainly unpredictable. It certainly is. Heres stav with a look at this mornings weather. A little of uncertainty as we head into next week. Areas of low pressure that could bring unsettled conditions. There will be sunshine two. Talking of sunshine after a pretty exceptional week. Cambridge University Weather station recorded 38. 7. If it stands it will be the highest uk recorded temperature ever. So we just wait for this result to come out perhaps in the next few days. This weekend a very different feeling, cooler, cloudier, outbreaks of rain, particularly across central and eastern areas thanks to this weather front, which will almost be stationary through saturday and into sunday. There will be quite a bit of rainfall to central, northern, and eastern errors. In fact, whether of a different extreme. Warnings if you had out onto the met office and bbc websites of rainfall which could cause some localised flooding in places. Gradually North Eastern this up with. Still quite humid when we have that cloud and rain. Similar sorts of day tomorrow. The weather front moving further westwards and fitting a bit. You can see where the heaviest rain will be. Perhaps dry and bright across the eastern side of the country. The best of the weather, the South West Quadrant into parts of wales, temperatures 2425, that into parts of wales, temperatures 24 25, that could also be the case for the london area, given some brightness and dry weather into the afternoon. Around 20 celsius in the north. Into monday, that weather front north. Into monday, that weather fro nt m oves north. Into monday, that weather front moves northwards. Fizzles out to just front moves northwards. Fizzles out tojust a front moves northwards. Fizzles out to just a few showers and cloud for scotland, Northern Ireland, northern england. The rest of england and wales, no state in store. Widespread sunshine and feeling warmer with this strong sunshine. 2a 26 degrees. Still around 20 21 in the north. We have this weather system moving into the south west. That could bring showery bursts of rain to england and wales reduced and wednesday. Some could be quite heavy. There are signs that between the areas of low pressure as the week moves on we will have some warm and sunny weather. Temperatures around a little above the seasonal average. Back to you. What is so interesting as we are getting peaks and troughs. We get intense hot weather and then volatile thundery weather. Is that a pattern or is that pretty unique rate now . M weather. Is that a pattern or is that pretty unique rate now . It is a bit of a pattern and it is pretty unique as we bit of a pattern and it is pretty unique as we were bit of a pattern and it is pretty unique as we were talking about the effects of Climate Change that when we get these extreme they happen quickly and extreme. Very high temperatures very quickly across the country, followed by, as you can see this weekend, heavy rain and the risk of localised flooding. We see these fluctuating extremes more often over the coming years, i think. It is fascinating how things are changing. More later with a look at what will happen for the week. You heard there, pretty humid and sticky in some parts. But some cooler temperatures. So if you have had trouble sleeping the last few nights there is relief. Notjust because of the heat but the thunder and lightning. Did that wake you up . No. A slip break through. I was tired. It is approaching 28 minutes past seven. Music therapy can help to deal with many different issues. It can relieve stress and treat depression, and is also used to help dementia patients deal with their memory loss. And as any specialist will tell you, the best sessions are when the therapist and patient are on the same wavelength. Now researchers in cambridge have shown that music can help to synchronise our brains. Heres our science correspondent richard westcott. This is a real Music Therapy session. But with a significant difference. Patient and therapists are having their brains monitored while they talk and listen to the music. Its an experiment by scientists at Anglia Ruskin University in cambridge and, for the first time, its physically shown what therapists have felt for years. What we can see here in purple is the line of the patient and hear the line of the therapist. When a session is going well, the brain of the therapist and their patient becomes synchronised. The patient has a strong Emotional Experience and then, after that strong Emotional Experience, you can see the therapist and patient are on the same wavelength here. They really are in sync. We know that Music Therapy is a really effective way of helping patients. In what is critical is to find those moments where the patient is connecting with the therapist and thats why im wearing this natty headgear, because its about measuring brain activity. Your research, you have taken a therapist, measured the brain, and therapist, measured the brain, and the patient, and you can see when theyre aligning when theyre listening to music, cant you . Absolutely, yes. How do you use that to improve therapy sessions . What we can do, there are more and more tiny mobile tools that we can attach to patients and then we could have it ona patients and then we could have it on a live background, you know, that the therapist could monitor the emotional state of the patient. First of all, could you just say your name. Alex street. The whole of human existence is about having functional, satisfying relationships, and these people come to therapy because it is not happening. We use music as a non verbal way of interacting so that we can work towards them being able to use words and language and talk about how they feel and then have much more satisfying relationships. What this gives us is a practical way of seeing whats happening between the client and the therapist, because theres this sync turning in brain activity and that then informs us of the best way to use music with our clients and move them on and get them out of therapy. We are in the early days of this research, but the more scientists than therapists and understand whats going on in the brain during sessions, the more effective they can make the treatment for patients. Richard westcott, bbc news. Coming up in the next half hour well take a close look at this years Tour De France, as the race enters its final stages. It is all turning a bit wet and windy. We will have the details of what that will mean for the race. Stay with us, headlines coming up. Hello, this is breakfast with ben thompson and tina daheley. Good morning. Hes gonna be i think hell be do a greatjob. Were working already on a trade agreement. And i think it will be a very substantial trade agreement. You know, we can do with the uk we can do three to four times we were actually impeded by their relationship with the european union. We were very much impeded on trade. The Prime Minister will announce plans this morning for a new high speed rail link between manchester and leeds as part of what he describes as efforts to rebalance power, growth and productivity across the uk. Borisjohnson will also promise to improve what he calls the unglamorous local services which people use every day. The plan has been welcomed by business groups but labour said it didnt go far enough. Sports direct has warned that it will have to close more branches of house of fraser. Very dramatic pictures there. Good morning, time to check in on what sport is doing. It is all about gareth bale . A potential new destination . Not back to the premier league a summary destination . Not back to the premier league a summary of expected but set for china, tojoin one of the big clu bs for china, tojoin one of the big clubs there and a financially very big deal, £1 million a week as a wage. He has not gone so well in the last six months, real madrid, he did not get on with the boss and he was booed by some home fans last season after a successful few years, winning so many trophies at totte n ha m , winning so many trophies at tottenham, now he will wave goodbye to the spanish giants. His future has been one of the big stories of the summer, and it looks like gareth bale has found a way out of real madrid. Hes set to leave the spanish giants and join the Chinese Super league side Jiangsu Suning a move that will apparently see him earn a Million Pounds a week. Its all yet to be confirmed, but sources close to the welshman, say the move is very close. Joe root criticised the pitch at lords after his side skittled out ireland for the lowest ever score at the famous old ground. Ireland had been set the relatively gettable second innings target of 182 to win their first ever test match. But it all went wrong, bowled out forjust 38 in a little over an hour. England captain root says the standard of the batting wasnt helped by the standard of the pitch. I thought there wasnt a fair. Not even close to a fair contest between bat and ball. Throughout the whole game. I thought there were obviously periods were it did get a little easier and better to bat. And we we re easier and better to bat. And we were not at our best by any stretch. Whilst the men were humbling ireland, englands women were on the receiving end yet again. They were thrashed by australia in the first t20 of the womens ashes. Australian captain meg lanning was unbeaten on 133 thats the highest internation t20 score in the womens game as they posted their highest ever total in the format. England lost by 93 runs, their biggest ever t20 defeat, and it means australia win the ashes outright. Ferrari look in good shape ahead of todays qualifying for the german grand prix. They dominated practice yesterday, although the session wasnt without drama, with red bulls pierre gasly involved in a crash. Charles leclerc was fastest, coming in a tenth of a second quicker than his ferrari team mate sebastian vettel, who was second quickest. Championship leader hamilton was third fastest in his mercedes. Englands netballers have a new coach. Shes called jess thirlby, and she replaces tracey neville, who stepped down after leading the roses to a bronze medal at this months world cup. Thirlby is a former England International herself and left her role as head coach of team bath in january after 20 years as a player and coach. I love netball, um, and its quite surreal to think, you know, aged 13, i had a phone call the eve of my first england trial to say there had been an administration error and i was too young to trial, and 26 years later, im finding myself in the role of roses head coach. I mean, what a journey that is, so, yeah, im really privileged and i absolutely adore this sport and i will give it my all. What a great story and talk about perseverance and triumphant in the face of adversity. There was a big new world record set at the world swimming championships, in south korea. This is the american caeleb dressel, knocking 0. 3 of a second off Michael Phelps record in the 100m butterfly. That might not sound very much, but in swimming, over such a short distance, that is massive. It wasnt even a final it was the semis so hes odds on for gold. Meanwhile britains Luke Greenbank won his first Senior International medal. He took bronze in the mens 200m backstroke, fighting back from sixth place at the halfway stage to set a new personal best. Its the penultimate day of the Tour De France and its the weather, rather than the riders, who are getting the headlines. Yesterdays stage 19 was abandoned because of hail, and todays race is going to be shortened. Lets say good morning to gareth rhys owen, who is covering the tour for bbc radio 5 live. Hi, gareth. Lets start with the extreme weather. After the hail, more weather warnings today having a real impact this year. Things like landslides. How unusual is that . It is ironic to think that we were recording a bespoke podcast two days ago and the cables on the tv compound were melting because of a0 degrees plus heat. Go from there, 2a hours later, extreme weather, hailstorms, storms, and as a consequence a landslide. It is unusual, at Tour De France, but you have to remember it is held on open road, open to the elements, it can be disrupted by Human Behaviour which has happened with protest and supporters touching, pushing the riders in the past, and this week it has been the weather. Yesterdays state was counselled with 30 kilometres to go and todays shortened and if anything, a Tour De France that has been so enjoyable due to the unpredictability of this race somewhat has been underwhelming now, going into the last few days because we are losing a little bit of fears because todays stage i think they not quite have the punch we we re think they not quite have the punch we were hoping for. Absolutely, we are looking at the pictures of how white the hills and road looked. You have hinted at what a loss it would be which is why you can perhaps understand that has happened to grant thomas who came in as favourite but his hopes had faded. Could he have done more or is it that the race can be a lottery . M is interesting yesterday, the clock was stopped on the penultimate climb and thomass teammate bernal was up the road. Some riders have complained or certainly been unhappy that if you think of cycling as a marathon, the race was stopped and they stopped the clock halfway through and as a consequence of some riders were pacing, their efforts, they would argue they would be improving towards the tail end of the stage but as for thomas, he has got the teammate bernal, the young colombian, in the yellowjersey, one minute 16 gap over him, and even he has conceded now that all efforts today will be put behind bernal because bernal is in a position of strength and thomas may well be competing to finish on the podium alongside bernal. Bernal today is the clear favourite to be on the podium tomorrow on the shop and put on the mythical yellowjersey. Podium tomorrow on the shop and put on the mythicalyellowjersey. Champs elysees. It is a team sport so champs elysees. It is a team sport so you need to make sure your team wins. Absolutely, the team win, last year it was chris froome alongside thomas but i in cycling individuals are crowned yet they win thanks to the help of others and today thomas will work alongside bernal, perhaps if both are right there together having towards the end of the stage, thatis having towards the end of the stage, that is a big if, maybe then bernal will turn to thomas and offer him the possibility of winning the stage but for this year, it seems that thomas may have to be the bridesmaid. Absolutely. Tell us about the joy that has been watching the fans known as the beef eaters. Absolute scenes they created ahead of the two arriving. We can see pictures of them now. If you get an opportunity to watch any sporting event, get yourself up the mountain ina tourde event, get yourself up the mountain in a Tour De France. Like the tour itself it is not easy and you may have to camp overnight but the party that awaits you is amazing. We have had the dutch corner and this is the beefeater bend and it is a party that goes on all night and the question is how do they get off the mountain after everything that has been happening. That isnt to you in the dinosaur costume, is it . No, but maybe next year. Great stuff, thank youindeed maybe next year. Great stuff, thank you indeed and we look forward to hearing you on five live later today on the penultimate stage. That was a song, wasnt it . Everybody walk the dinosaur. Crosstalk. I am really scared for them. They cam shepherd him away. Stay with us because we are talking about some rustling. Very competitive this morning, tina, with the thumb wrestling. Phil daley went to see how final training sessions were going. Music plays. Here is a scene from herts, rainy s goes there over the lake. It is to stay cooler throughout the weekend herts. It will not be a complete uk wash out. This weather front is pretty stationary across central and eastern parts of the uk. We have fewer isobars across the western south west. Pressure is high. Quite a nice day for parts of Northern Ireland and central and southern wales and the south west of england. That is goes further north and west. Some of the strain heavy from South West England through North Eastern england by the western scotland. Rumbles of thunder likely to continue. We have seen lightning in yorkshire in the last couple of hours. Temperatures, suppressed where we have the cloud and rain, 1920, but where we have the cloud and rain, 19 20, but for northern scotland in the south west, where we have the best of the sunshine, leuty mid 20s. It will pivot a little bit and put into parts of Northern Ireland into the afternoon. Showers around. It could be a little drierfor showers around. It could be a little drier for the showers around. It could be a little drierfor the east showers around. It could be a little drier for the east coast stop temperatures a bit better, 20 21. The best of the weather pretty much all we can will be part of wales in the south west. Aa 25, 26 in the warmer spots. Monday not a bad day across the southern half of the uk. 2a. His clicker thumb needs to be pretty good. I think you would be good at thumb war. There is a challenge. Across this one. Well be back with the headlines at 8. Now its time for the travel show. Hello and welcome to the travel show. This week were to new york city. Every year 30 Million People visit from across the world. Back in the late 19705 the city had a notorious crime record and wasnt quite so welcoming to overseas vi5itor5. In the late 705 it was ju5t vi5itor5. In the late 705 it was just an attack on the senses. There would be graffiti everywhere, gangs would be graffiti everywhere, gangs would patrol up and down the trains. They would control certain line5. You would never see a cop. The Guardian Angel 5tarted you would never see a cop. The Guardian Angel started right here in the bronx. I decided to organise my closing crew to ride this very same train. It was the number four train. This was our baptism in fire. This was the epicentre of criminal and Gang Activity in the late 19705. Whereas the subway5 have improved immeasurably from when we first started, now there are poves out there and they flashed them5elve5 started, now there are poves out there and they flashed themselves to women. So we have a perv busters unit, comprised of women, led by women who prioritise that, because what we want to do i5 empower women to fight back. Perv busters, its catchy, it gets people to stop and notice and it makes sense. Sexual assaults on the subway are on the rise, and theyre very daring. They want to be on social media, they want to be out there, it is really nuts. So usually out on patrol you go after one or two pervs a night. We have two different events going on simultaneously. We get a lot of photos and calls us sent to us, we obviously have to make sure that they are legitimate, and that is when we put out the flyer and we go out to the location of, you know, said incident and take it from there. Were gonna get off at 190th. It is not taken seriously so much because they know our great state of new york is not enforcing sexual crimes, they know they are not going to get charged seriously, theyre back and forth, its a revolving door. The first significant moment was when i was five years old and my sister was eight. We were with our mom, coming up the subway stairs at 183rd, by the old carvell there. We were on either side of our mom and my mom was in the middle, and we were coming up the stairs, halfway up these stairs right here was where a guy passed us, he grabbed my mothers purse and pulled her back down the stairs. I can still remember, me and my sister were screaming, and we were scared because something really bad happened to my mother, and even to this day it just gets to me. Thats all i remember, screaming, and my mother, thankfully, she was not seriously injured, but Something Like that, if it affects me to this day, i can imagine how what they think is simple crime as far as groping or flashing, that is with your life. On any given day we have roughly half a Million People riding the subways. We want to make sure commuters are getting to and from safely, keeping anything from happening, obviously, preventing crime as well as sexual assaults that are happening on the rise, we are looking up for everything. If were there and we see it, we stop it. Now what you see a lot of, that you didnt see before, emotionally disturbed people, homeless people, oftentime5 the trains are not clean, so aesthetically its bad and its not good for the emotionally disturbed or the homeless. But i would still accept what exists now compared to what used to be, there used to be so much graffiti in the trains you couldnt even see out the window. And actually always fights and stabbings and shootings, and Gang Activity. The violence was off the hook. Its a big difference but we have to keep it that way, we cant just assume its going to stay that way. Whats up, man . And in the beginning of the group, it was extraordinarily dangerous before we were recognised by the police, we had six Guardian Angels shot and killed on the line of duty, three dozen injured, many of them still going through therapy for the injuries that they suffered long ago. Now we have gone through three generations of Guardian Angels, some of whom have gone on to become Police Officers themselves. So the reception is positive, even though we remain independent and autonomous. For the last four years, we have been seeing a lot more uprising in sexual crimes. We usually pass these out. It is an information flyer because we do a patrol called perv busters, in regard to a lot of the perverts on the train, and we usually pass these up the car because not Everyone Wants to call the police. So we field the information, we put out flyers and we pass on the information to pd if necessary. We try to do our best. When we are in the Guardian Angel uniform its a big deal, we get noticed a lot because the red stands out to begin with, and we definitely want people to see us, so if something is going on, its for them to look at us, and feel a sense of safety. They have always told us that over the years, when they see us they feel safe. Ijust want to give a shout out to this man, what he has done for new york city. I am exuberant about the potential and the possibilities of the Guardian Angels in the future, notjust the here and now. I believe in self help and i believe that one woman, one man can make a difference, and i think we have proven that over a0 years. Hello again, its high summer here in europe which means that many of you are planning road trips around the continent. And unfortunately in the case of one viewer, picking up speeding tickets. But first, french railways has tested a remote controlled drone train that could lead to driverless passenger services. The train successfully travelled four kilometres through the suburbs of paris. It has been called a fundamental step towards the train of tomorrow. Back here in the present, mario biocca from montreal in canada says a rental car can be very helpful in ireland and scotland where the traffic is relatively light and public transport is sparse. But the costs of taking a rental car across the irish sea which divides those countries can be very high. So rent one car in ireland, return it, then take a ferry or fly across to scotland. Theres lots of choice. Rent another vehicle, but drop it back and make your inter city travel in england by rail. Relatively fast, and with a bit of advance planning, extremely good value. Sue wilson was travelling north west of paris, at what she thought was the legal speed limit of 80 kilometres an hour. But she says to help out with this, ive sought some specialist knowledge. Its true, over the last ten years, cooperation between administrations in europe are much better than they used to be, and wherever you come from, if you have a fine in france, they will fine you in your home country. And the second reason is speed Camera Technology has improved. Automatic cameras have average speed checks all over france and these days they are implementing a new generation of speed cameras which also detect the safety belts, the phone behind the wheels, the safety distance between vehicles and also if you drive too fast when its raining or when you are supposed to drive ten kilometres per an hour less. Nardipad instagrams from the netherlands about a trip that she and her boyfriend are planning in the south of england. Well probably fly to london and are thinking of going south west. We might stop in a couple of places like stonehenge. Is there anywhere else you can recommend . The great west way is a newly created route which is being described as englands route 66. It leads west from london and takes in some splendid locations including windsor, stately homes in the Thames Valley in the county of wiltshire and ends in bath and then bristol. Diversions north to the cotswolds and south to stonehenge are easy. The route even has its own website, greatwestway. Co. Uk, with details, attractions and accommodation. From the western end, you can make a magnificent journey along the north coast of devon and cornwall, visiting the ruined castle at tintagel steeped in legend. You could follow the a30 road to its natural conclusion that lands end but i think coastal towns such as st ives and fowey are more rewarding. Wherever you are heading, im here to help. Send in your questions and i will do my very best to bring you the answers. From me, simon calder, the global guru, bye for now and see you next time. Until next time from me and the rest of the travel show team, its good morning welcome to breakfast with tina daheley and ben thompson.
