Chandler is a hub where Autonomous Vehicles are growing and having more males mapped on our roads than anywhere else in the galaxy. It is kind of great to be the centre of the heart. Chandler, i believe, was chosen because it has very wide streets, very clean streets, they are on a grid, and the people would be very accepting of this kind of technology. And so it was that the technology. And so it was that the technology that will one day change oui technology that will one day change our society, our landscape, and our lives found a home in arizona. The makers of self driving cars have flocked to the town of chandler, which as fast become the industrys testbed. The Biggest Challenges for people when they think about adding up their keys and getting rid of the car and not driving any more is that loss of independence. When you Start Talking about the senior population, that sense of pride and independence is very strong. So to try and take that away from somebody is really difficult situation. Autonomous cars certainly have the power to change lives and save lives when the technology eventually becomes reliable, and when it becomes socially acceptable. But just over the when it becomes socially acceptable. Butjust over the horizon, there are other vehicles which may be driving themselves about even sooner. Trucks are highway vehicles, and when they do straight towards populated areas, it is usually on the outskirts, moving from depot to depot. So unlike autonomous cars, lidar centres a re unlike autonomous cars, lidar centres are not the key to these auto regs, it is these longwave cameras. We have two lidars on the system, but most importantly for our vehicle we have a camera array, our primary centres are cameras because this is a large truck, we need to see a great distance. This vehicle can perceive objects 1000 metres away, well over half a mile from the vehicle. We also have side facing cameras which are used for, on the surface streets, conducting unpredicted left and right turns as a primary centre. Further back we have cameras that are giving us close surveillance of the lands around us, that enhances what the lidar is also seen, and we have cameras that are looking behind the vehicle and at the trailer. All of these senses combined create a long range vision system for the truck that helps it to detect the objects speed, trajectory and even can work out its intent. At 1000 metres and autonomous truck could have up to 35 seconds of reaction time. And if you are expecting some high tech controls in the cab, well you may be surprised. This is probably the most important button in the vehicle. This enables autonomous mode. So when we reach a point where the vehicle is ready to go autonomous, the button is pressed, and off we go. Now these trucks are not the largest Autonomous Vehicles being driven in arizona. They have some big competition. Mindbogglingly huge mining vehicles from so picken about long range and come within stopping distance of the truck. How fast can we go in this thing . This truck is capable of going a0 mph. Thing . This truck is capable of going 40 mph. Oh my word. We are really going around the corners as well. It is not shy about cornering. Once we are loaded it as a whole different truck. Now you have 40 times you are carrying around. Right, and is the vehicle aware is loaded so it drives differently . But the trucking and Mining Industries are huge employers are so Self Driving Technology will inevitably lead to significant job driving technology will inevitably lead to significantjob losses. Nobody wants to eliminate a job, we want to find a different role for that person. We ju5t different role for that person. We think there will be ple nty of 5hortage. We think there will be plenty of opportunities for human driver5 plenty of opportunities for human drivers for the foreseeable future. So how do truckers feel about their jobs being threatened by self driving rigs . You ask any truck driver, they dont want to be on a 9to5 driver, they dont want to be on a 9 to 5 desk, somebody telling them what to do, do this, do that. If you have a truck, eight hours a day, drive, you are by yourself, listening to music, you have peace. While the advancements we have seen in the last few years are more than impressive, getting a computer to fully understand the real world and drive safely through it will be a monumental achievement. We have made it to the end of what has been an extraordinary week of weather. Initially it looked like we had not broken the uks all Time Temperature record, but in the last 24 hours some new information has come to light, a temperature reading from Cambridge University Botanic Garden of 38. 7 degrees on thursday afternoon. This still needs to be verified, it needs to be checked by the met office, that will happen in the coming days and weeks, but if that temperature stands, that will be a new uk record. But, and i am sure many people will welcome this, a very different feel this weekend. Much cooler weather with some heavy rain in places, that rain could be enough to cause some disruption, because we have this slow moving weather front draped across the british isles, bringing some rain across the eastern side of the uk on saturday morning, quite a muggy feel, some mist and murk as well, those temperatures as we start the day between 14 17, not quite as warm as it has been on recent mornings. As we go through the day this band of cloud and rain really making very little progress, wet weather across the south east into east anglia, the midlands, parts of Northern England and up into scotland, the rain heavy and persistent, perhaps enough to cause localised flooding, certainly the chance of some travel disruption. To North Eastern scotland, northern ireland, wales and the south west, either side of that system, it will likely stay dry, temperatures 18 23. On saturday night the front will pivot and move westwards to some extent, but there is uncertainty about exactly how far west that front will get, it could well introduce some rain into northern ireland, but some uncertainty about that, and it is going to be a somewhat fresher night, by no means chilly, but 12 15, a little more comfortable for sleeping. During sunday our weather front still wriggling around, still sitting in place, rain perhaps into northern ireland, some hanging around south west scotland and some rain dangling down into Northern England, the midlands, a few showers in the south east. But again either side of the front, the north east and the south west, we see a lot of dry weather, some spells of sunshine and the temperature is still in the 20s. As we go into monday, our old weather front still probably sitting across the northern half of the uk, that will allow some showers to develop and later in the day, an area of low pressure is likely to throw some rain towards the far south west of england.
