Ina in a moment it will be time for calls for mandatory stocks of emergency adrenaline pens in schools after the death of a boy due to a severe allergic reaction. And england avoid embarassment, beating ireland in their one off test at lords. And coming up on bbc news. The Tour De France has had to be halted after hail and snow left the mountain route too dangerous. It meansjulian alaphilippe has lost the overall lead to egan bernal. Good evening and welcome to the bbc news at six. Carl beech, the man found guilty of lying about the existence of a paedophile ring involving several prominent people, has been jailed for 18 years. Hed been convicted after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court of making false allegations of murder and sexual abuse against a number of public figures, including the former home secretary, the late lord brittan. In a victim impact statement, his widow, lady brittan, said her desperately ill husband had faced entirely false allegations of the very worst kind and he would never know his name had been cleared. Our home affairs correspondent, june kelly, reports. As he lived his life as a School Governor and hospital inspector, carl beech watched others suffer as a result of his lies. Puppies pinned to my chest while they did whatever they wanted to do. He had handed over their names in police interviews, accusing high profile figures are forming a vip paedophile ring. Beech revelled in the attention he received, because he was attention he received, because he was before he was exposed as a paedophile himself and a cruel and dangerous manipulator. Today it was the turn of those whose lives he tried to destroy to have their voices heard. The former mp Harvey Proctor lost his home and hisjob because he was under suspicion. Carl beech claimed he had actually murdered two boys. Beech listen from the dock as a series of powerful and poignant victim impact statements we re poignant victim impact statements were read to the packed courtroom. Lord bramall, a former chief of the defence staff, now in his 90s, right wrote the widow of lord britain, who had died during the investigation, wrote and the godson of the former Prime Minister sir edward heath, said daniel odonnell, daniel 0donnell, son of another falsely accused politician, spoke for his family danieljanner. Falsely accused politician, spoke for his family danieljanner. The effect is hard to describe it is the stigma of an allegation as serious as rape against a loving father. Harvey proctor later gave a news conference. My life, my repute, my future as i had planned it to be, and my belief in british institutions and fairness, have gone. The metropolitan police assertion that his allegations were credible and true is already part of my obituary. Beech wanted to put other people in the dock, but he is now beginning a long prison sentence. Carl beech was given this 18 year term for a number of offences, lying about his abuse claims, that is 12 cou nts about his abuse claims, that is 12 counts of perverting the course of justice, claiming compensation fraudulently by lying about those claims and also paedophile offences. He had admitted downloading hundreds of sexual images of young boys and secretly filming a boy indecently. Thejudge said he secretly filming a boy indecently. The judge said he should serve half of that 18 year term. The judge also acknowledged that it was a severe sentence, but of course, we heard all this terrible testimony in court today of the damage this man has done. Thejudge said today of the damage this man has done. The judge said the today of the damage this man has done. Thejudge said the message he wa nted done. Thejudge said the message he wanted to send out was that this sentence should act as a deterrent. Clive. June kelly at Newcastle Crown Court, thank you. Borisjohnson says his plan to recruit 20,000 new Police Officers across england and wales will begin within weeks and be completed injust three years. This would restore officer numbers back to levels not seen for a decade after cuts under the Coalition Government and successive conservative administrations. The move has been welcomed, but there are warnings of logistical challenges, including a lack of training instructors. Our home affairs sorrespondent, daniel sandford, has the story. The passing out parade this month at hendon, the Biggest Police college in the country, as forces in england and wales started to turn their backs on ten years of austerity. It was theresa may, as home secretary, who implemented the cuts. But now her successor who implemented the cuts. But now her successof as who implemented the cuts. But now her successor as Prime Minister, out doing selfies in what looked like election mode, has made replacing the 20,000 lost officers one of his earliest priorities. I think its the most fundamental investment you could make in society, reducing crime, making our streets safer. Safer streets equals more investment, equals more business, equalsjobs, equals god. Its absolutely crucial for everywhere in this country. This morning, the capital woke up to news of yet another murder, a young man fatally stabbed close to the famous abbey road studios, who then lay dying in front of his mother. Its been a sharp uptick in Violent Crime that has put the issue of Police Numbers back on the agenda and forced ministers to reverse what has been a ten year decline. The number of Police Officers in england and wales peaked in 2009 at close to 14,000, then peaked in 2009 at close to 144,000, then fell every year until this year. 15 of their workforce was lost. Police chiefs welcomed the new recruitment drive is incredibly good news, but with a shortage of trainers and even police stations to house the new officers, it will be a tall order. How realistic is it to increase the number of Police Officers by 20,000 injust increase the number of Police Officers by 20,000 in just three yea rs 7 officers by 20,000 in just three years . Its ambitious and the government themselves is that it is ambitious. There are real challenges in how you make all parts of the system faster and how we bring people in at that speed, which would be unprecedented in the last decade. Providing he provides the funding for the new Police Officers, we would obviously welcome it, since we have been calling for this for the past three years. If we dont increase the numbers of police on the streets then, the whole problems get worse and worse. For years, the conservative party insisted that in the fight against crime, Police Numbers were not the key factor. Now the new Prime Minister plans to increase numbers to exactly where they were ten years ago. Daniel sandford, bbc news. 0ur deputy political editorjohn pienaar is at westminster. John, this announcement on Police Numbers and the time frame, some suggested bodes well for an election sooner suggested bodes well for an election sooner rather than later . Well, borisjohnson has certainly hit the ground campaigning. We heard him today saying he isjust ground campaigning. We heard him today saying he is just planning to deliver his promises. He has no intention of calling an election. But that doesnt mean it wont happen. In the pipeline is more for the nhs and schools. These are right out of the election playbook and by the way, he has changed his title to include ministerfor the the way, he has changed his title to include minister for the union. The way, he has changed his title to include ministerfor the union. Why . Because brexit and especially a new deal brexit could add to the energy for scottish independence, and some say i was unification too. The appointment of ministers has carried on as well today. In comes this brexiteer, out goes that remainer. And we have seen in the week, more women and more members of ethnic minorities in the top jobs. These arent just minorities in the top jobs. These arentjust ministers in a cabinet, there to deliver a new kind of government, they are there to beat the brexit party and try to appeal to liberal, multicultural britain at the same time. They look a bit like a team photo for the next tory ma nifesto. A team photo for the next tory manifesto. And any progress on brexit talks . Well, Boris Johnson spoke today to the leaders of france and germany. Not much common ground. He is saying clearly that he wants the eu to scrap its plans to keep the eu to scrap its plans to keep the irish border open by having in reserve the idea of britain and Northern Ireland stay close to eu rules. The Irish Foreign minister says he is charting a collision course. So a deal looks remote and no deal brexit looks possible, although that might be blocked by parliament, and that might mean an election. So we see all sorts of obstacles along the way, although borisjohnson obstacles along the way, although Boris Johnson says obstacles along the way, although borisjohnson says no election. But it looks as if one is very possible, and speculation will be hanging in the air through the summer. John pienaar at westminster, thank you. New figures suggest cambridge may after all have broken the temperature record yesterday, for the hottest day ever in the uk. Initial indications are that the weather station at the Cambridge UniversityBotanic Garden in the city centre, reached 38. 7 degrees c, breaking the record by 0. 2 degrees. 0ur chief environment correspondent, Justin Rowlatt is there. Yes, the recording was made here at Cambridge Universitys wonderful Botanic Garden. You can see the daily weather recording. 25th of july, yesterday, thursday, and here is the maximum temperature, 38. 7 celsius. That temperature was recorded by a thermometer in that weather station over there, that white box. If confirmed, it hasnt been confirmed yet, but if it is, it nudgesjust ahead been confirmed yet, but if it is, it nudges just ahead of the 38. 5 celsius recorded in faversham in kent back in 2003. The met office says it is provisional because this is such an important recording, the highest temperature ever recorded in britain. The met office want to be absolutely sure it is accurate. They wa nt to absolutely sure it is accurate. They want to send a team up to check the equipment and make sure it was recording everything properly. They said to me this afternoon that they see no reason that it wont be confirmed. Should you break open the champagne . Well, ask yourself this. Are record temperatures like this something we should be celebrating . Rising temperatures are what Climate ChangeScientists Say we should expect. They say we should be concerned about this. That is why its called global warming. We know high temperatures threaten their ecosystems on which all life depends, and that is why when i spoke to one climate scientist earlier this afternoon, he said as far as he was concerned, this is a warning from the planet, a warning that he said we ignore at our peril. Justin rowlatt in cambridge, thank you. Rail and air passengers are facing further delays as a result of yesterdays record breaking temperatures and storms across europe. East midlands trains, Running Services between london and sheffield, has urged people not to travel, and other operators have warned of disruption. London airports have also experienced problems. 0ur transport correspondent tom burridge is at heathrow for us this evening. A noisy heathrow, but we saw what the hot weather did to our railways last night. It was the Stormy Weather after that across europe which has caused problems at our airports and some hellish journeys for passengers. Better today on the railways, but by no means perfect. But with around 40 flights cancelled at gatwick, more than 100 here at heathrow, its been a testing 24 hours for those catching a plane, even though, as we have been hearing, flights are getting in and out of this, the Busiest Airport in europe, and things seem to be improving. Not a comfortable weight at heathrow, where some flights were cancelled and many delayed. Our first flight from manchester to heathrow was delayed by three hours, so we missed our connecting flight to rio and we cant fly out to rio until tomorrow. Some to rio and we cant fly out to rio untiltomorrow. Some passengers boarded, but the Stormy Weather last night meant that they were taken off their flight. Its been night meant that they were taken off theirflight. Its been a night meant that they were taken off their flight. Its been a tricky 24 hours at many uk airports, and passengers have been left stranded. Im still in london and i am told i cant get to 0slo today or tomorrow. Since we got to naples airport last night, we have had absolutely no information, no help, no staff anywhere. Hopefully after last nights escapades, which left us waiting four or five hours and then boarded the plane and were told the food whisper than we were not allowed on the plane. A damaged rate also caused problems for the whole uk airspace. It meant for a few hours today, fewer landings and ta ke offs hours today, fewer landings and take offs the hours today, fewer landings and ta ke offs the country. Hours today, fewer landings and takeoffs the country. This is the busiest weekend of the year for airports, airlines and railway companies. And unfortunately, thousands, tens of thousands of people, will be waking up on saturday morning thousands of miles from where they need to be. And after the chaos on the railways yesterday, fewer trains today. Rachel faced a trickyjourney. yesterday, fewer trains today. Rachel faced a tricky journey. I am heading to harrogate in north yorkshire. I should heading to harrogate in north yorkshire. Ishould have heading to harrogate in north yorkshire. I should have gone from bedfordshire up through york. It should have taken an hour and a half to two hours. Its going to take me, i dont know, five or six hours according to this. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience. Services were cancelled in different parts of the country, but the worst disruption was on this line, where overhead wires were still being repaired. There have been very few trains heading in and out of london to hear and other parts of the midland throughout the morning, but its relatively quiet at this station. It seems after the chaos of yesterday, some people decided not to travel. Some passengers made most ofa to travel. Some passengers made most of a long wait on the tarmac at heathrow last night. But with the eu rostar heathrow last night. But with the eurostar down this afternoon, misery too for passengers waiting here in paris and in london. Tom burridge, bbc news. Our top story this evening. Carl beech, the man who lied about a vip paedophile ring, kidnapping and murdering boys has beenjailed for 18 years. Coming up. The british teenagers hoping to win 2. 5 million by gaming at the fortnite world cup. Coming up on sportsday on bbc news. Former team bath director of netballjess thirlby has been given the england head coachsjob. She replaces tracey neville, who steps down after winning bronze in the world cup. A leading allergy specialist is calling for mandatory stocks of emergency adrenaline pens in schools. The hormone medication rapidly reverses the effects of severe allergic reactions, but schools arent forced to stock it. The bbc has learnt that the death of a boy who suffered a severe allergic reaction while at school in london is being investigated by the health and safety executive. 0ur education editor, branwen jeffreys, has more. Since he was a toddler, karanbir had food allergies. A risk managed until secondary school. Cheese was thrown at him by another pupil. Within half an hour, karanbir went into cardiac arrest. He died, aged 13, in intensive care. I expected him to return home. I sent him to a place where i thought he would be safe. How do you get through this . How do you live with it . I live in a black hole. My life is without my son. Something that could have been prevented very, very easily through education and understanding. Rina lost her only child. The inquest found failings at the school. Karanbir was given adrenaline after ten minutes. The pen was out of date, there was no second pen. What is the difference, do you think, between the blood in a vein and an archery . Its going to oxygenate. The difference for 15 year old lily is a school that saved her life. A food allergy had never been a worry. Until a lesson last year, when lily suffered a serious allergic reaction. It was like there was someone pushing down on my throat and sat on my chest. And then. I didnt know what was going on. Because we had learned about anaphylaxis but i never thought it would happen to me. It was really scary. Sarah, it must be terrifying for you even just listening to lily again . Yeah, very. Itjust brings back the memories. And i always think, what if . If that pen werent available, the paramedics could have took five, ten minutes and i could have lost her. We have both asthma and the adrenaline pens. And this is a staff member who saved lilys life. Literally take it off there. Using an emergency adrenaline pen immediately. How big a decision was it for you to be able to give that to lily on the day . 0n the day it was easy. In hindsight, it was a bit scary. But we did it. You have to do. Its a childs life. Two years ago the law was changed so schools could buy emergency adrenaline pens and yet still many dont have them. And heres why it matters. A life threatening reaction to an allergy might be very rare but you cant tell which child might have one. You get it out and you put it on a part of your body and you hold it there for 10 seconds. Raising awareness helps but experts want more. One of the uks top allergy doctors is calling for regulation. Wed really like to see that become mandatory so that all schools have those adrenaline autoinjectors in place in case of those emergencies. I would really like to see education around the value of using the adrenaline as early as possible. There is very commonly delay in giving the adrenaline. Lily knows she is safe at school. Please could i have the popcorn chicken . The popcorn chicken has got dairy in it. Her allergies programmed into the canteen. Englands schools must take allergies seriously, say the government. And new Health Lessons will help teach pupils more. Branwen jeffreys, bbc news. Two premier League Footballers have been involved in a carjacking attempt by an armed gang in london. Arsenal players mesut ozil and Sead Kolasinac were targeted in the attack last night, but both escaped uninjured. Footage on social media appears to show kolasinac chasing the robbers away. Simonjones reports. The arsenal defender defending himself and team mate mezut ozil, who was in the 4x4, against bikers believed to be armed with knives. Sead kolasinac darts towards the front of the vehicle to fend off one attacker and then, with agility normally seen on the football pitch, he turns his attention to another biker at the back. But the ordeal isnt over. The footballers were then pursued for around a mile by the men on motorbikes. They abandoned their 4x4 here and then raced into this turkish restaurant to ask for help. They had phoned the owner, who was a friend, as they were being pursued so when they arrived at the restaurant the staff were able to chase the bikers away empty handed. We didnt first of all understand what has happened. And then when we saw the motorbike passing from here we realised that its serious. Mezut ozil, arriving home after training, knows he has his friends to thank for intervening. Reporter was it a scary experience . Whats the difference . Everyone is ok now. Kolasinac tweeted that he is fine but they both know this could have ended very differently. Arsenal said it will remind your squad how to keep safe and will continue to review security measures with the police. Simonjones, bbc news, north london. Some of the worlds best video gamers are limbering up for the biggest ever e sports tournament, taking place this weekend in new york. The winner of the fortnite world cup will pocket nearly £2. 5 million, and as joe tidy reports, some of the competitors, are still teenagers. Its the biggest gathering ever for the biggest game ever. The inaugural fortnight world cup whittled down 40 million wannabes to less than 200 finalists. Now its time for the cream of the crop to fight for the title. Some of the favourites are british, including kyle jackson, known online as mongrel. Its a lot more serious than people think. Its not just playing a game for fun. You have to play for consecutive months a lot every day. You just dont get here through chance. Another contender is 15 year old benjy fish from middlesex. Him and his team mate have both qualified as a duo and individually, meaning theyre guaranteed 100,000 each before a single shot is fired. I think itll be a bit different when im on the stage because ive never been on a huge stage like that before. Ive only ever played in my bedroom. But right now im really confident. Benjy and his parents bet big on this sport. His mum and manager, anne, decided to home school him so he could concentrate on fortnight. Certainly when the potential of the world cup came up we knew he was going to be competing with guys that were going to be practising for 10 or 12 hours a day so i wanted to give him the best opportunity. Its a sell out here at the arthur ashe stadium, with tens of thousands of fans expected over the weekend and potentially millions more online. Its also a big moment in the maker of fortnights history as they can finally say theyre a big player in e sports. According to analysts, the global e sports market will exceed the billion dollar revenue mark this year. Almost all the finalists are boys under the age of 16 but some celebrities playing over the weekend include 13 year old rising star ewok, who has made waves as the first major streamer who is deaf. Fortnights rise to this point has not been without controversy. Prince harry once called for it to be banned for being too addictive. But for these players it has already changed their lives and with the prizes on offer here, some are dreaming of even bigger things. Joe tidy, bbc news, new york. The worlds most famous cycling race the Tour De France had to be halted earlier today after a freak snow storm in the alps. After days of battling intense heat, cyclists were stopped by a blizzard with bulldozers and snowploughs being used to clear the road. The announcement was greeted with fury in the peloton especially by the frenchman, julian alaphilippe, who lost the overall lead. Englands cricketers have beaten ireland by 143 runs to win their one off test at lords. The hosts bowled the irish out for the lowest ever score on the ground in a test just 38 runs. Joe wilson was watching. Its the hope thats the problem. The beautiful, horrible hope. Ireland were here to gate crash crickets establishment to win at lords. 182 runs thats all they needed. And every one of them would be cheered and celebrated in a way lords was just getting used to. Trouble was, there were only 38 of them. Runs, that is. England recovered their intensity while stuart broad has swept through teams before. Here, chris woakes was his arch companion in accuracy. The overhead conditions, the pitch conditions suited bowling. The english fielders caught everything and ireland suddenly looked like a team playing their third test match ever. Defend it, hit it anything well, its easy from the seats. Batting sometimes seems impossible when youre actually doing it. Decades of development and dedication and. 38 all out. Englands world cup spirit endured. I think we have come from the unknown, havent we . Weve never been in a position where we have won a world cup. For half of the side to be a part of that and then very quickly have to adjust for test cricket. I thought this morning we were outstanding, i thought we exploited those conditions beautifully. Well, this test match will serve as a preparation of sorts for england as they look ahead to the ashes. Thats next week. As for ireland, the chance to play on a stage like this. Well, who knows when that will come again . I guess they must try to remember the hope rather than the missed opportunity of the day. Joel wilson, bbc news, at lords. Time for a look at the weather. Time for a look at the weather with sarah keith lucas. We have had reports of a provisional new all time uk temperature record of 38. 7 celsius. This is yet to be verified by the met office but it looks like that happened yesterday at Cambridge UniversityBotanic Garden and that will be verified over the next week but nonetheless, the heat and humidity we had yesterday has been easing away today. The attention turns to heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly affecting the east coast over the past few hours and also east in scotland seeing downpours and we keep that showery theme through the course of the evening and overnight, the rain becomes more persistent into the early hours of saturday. Where we have cloud and rain, still quite humid with temperatures at a 17 degrees but either side of that, something fresher to start the weekend. Through the weekend this weather front will be quite slow moving, it stalls so some areas will get a pasting of rain through the weekend but other areas will stay largely dry. Areas likely to see that rain on saturday the south east of england, Northern England and the western half of scotland and for northern and eastern scotland and Northern Ireland, wales and the south west, sunny spells and in the sunshine and temperatures at 22 or 23. Under the cloud and rain, around 19 or 20 celsius. Significantly cooler. By the time we get to sunday on the weather front is still with us, moving further south and west words so for Northern Ireland on the south east of england, outbreaks of rain and largely dry either side of that with some showers but temperatures in the high teens or early 20s. For now the heatwave of this week is over but do watch out for heavy showers and we could have pretty heavy rain through the course of the weekend. Thank you. Thats it.
