Rehabilitation programme. The pastor says more than half have stayed on the straight and narrow. At least five others who did not have been killed. Back at the detention centre, more arrivals, suspected gang members corralled in a new crackdown by el salvadors president. He is urging young men to leave the gangs and go home to their families, otherwise, he says, the only future is prison or death. Orla guerin, bbc news, san salvador. The nominations have been announced for this Years Mercury prize for the best album by a british or irish artist. On the shortlist are bands including idles and the 1975, singer songwriter anna calvi and northampton rapper slowthai. The Mercury Prize prides itself on recognising an impressive breadth of musical styles with its nominations. This year, there is the more commercial sound of the 1975. And the band foals. As well as the more reflective melodies of cate le bon. And ten piece jazz collective seed ensemble. Singer songwriter anna calvi has now been nominated for her first three albums, equalling coldplays record. It means the world for an artist like me, to kind of get your music out there, for other people to hear about you and to be among such amazing talent. Among much of that amazing talent there is a particular theme politics. Idles arent the first band to marry music and political protest. My blood brother is an immigrant. But theyve done it with a fresh power and energy. The whole point of us as a band is that were trying to articulate the personal and the political as the same thing. Everything isjust a heightened vision of welfare and well being in politics, and we just wanted to try and marry that and get people to kind of feel they have a voice, even through listening. Water it down like evian think that tyrons naive. While rapper slowthai has used his experiences growing up in northampton for his nominated album nothing great about britain. Im not trying to say i hate this country. I love this country, im proud. Ive got more pride in my heart for it than anything. Ijust feel weve lost value of what is important, and its community, and thats what im trying to do with this album. For artists who arent quite household names yet, like black midi or little simz, just the nomination can be a huge boost. Still, all 12 will be aiming to win in september. Lizo mzimba, bbc news. Englands cricketers are battling to avoid defeat in their test match against ireland after another remarkable day at lords. Despite some heroics from an unlikely source in their second innings, england suffered another batting collapse. They will resume tomorrow on 303 9, just 181 runs in front. Joe wilson was watching the action. 35 degrees, a pair of glasses and a helmet. Its a tough combination. And jack leach had to try and bat english cricket back to respectability. He grasped the occasion. Leach was only sent in to stick around to protect the proper batsmen the humble nightwatchman isnt supposed to score 50 runs, but leach did. And now everyone with england could remember that cricket is supposed to be fun. Jason roy is supposed to make big scores. A first test match 50. England overcame the deficit, led in the match, and as the clock ticked past lunch, irelands bowlers seemed out of ideas. Well, england first played a test match in 1877. Ireland, in 2018. But any team theres ever been soon learns that in test cricket, at times you mustjust stay patient. And look, roy dismissed for 72. Then leach on 92, so close to his hundred, gone. But the crowd knew what theyd seen. Theres still a place in test cricket for the stoical hero. The leach spirit then vanished, as england contrived to collapse right back into jeopardy. The tumble of wickets would have been astonishing if we hadnt seen it before for example, yesterday. Make no mistake, ireland were once again inspired as they left england nine wickets down and just 181 runs ahead at the close of play. And what it means, well, tomorrow at some point, ireland will bat quite conceivably for victory. Joe wilson, bbc news, lords. Thats it from us. Newsnight has just got under way on bbc two. Time for the news where you are. Hello and welcome to sportsday, im chetan pathak. Coming up another day, another english batting collapse as the first test against ireland hangs in the balance. Geraint thomas drops to third overall at the Tour De France but remains 95 seconds behind leader julian alaphilippe. And a win for wolves on their first european night in nearly a0 years. Hello and welcome to sportsday. Thank you forjoining us. Ireland, playing in only their third test, have the opportunity to pull off one of the greatest shocks of all time as england struggled with the bat again on day two at lords. At least an improvement on the 85 all out yesterday. They were 303 9 in their second innings at the close of play today thats a lead of 181 nightwatchmanjack leach making 92. Our reporter, patrick gearey, was watching. Most england batting problems have come back once again. It started for rory burns. He made a mistake early on. He looks fidgety at the crease, he is not in any sort of form at the moment and would have wanted more than six, not a good looking shot. Englands batting hero is not batsmen at all, it was jack leach who only went in as a nightwatchman but he did more than that today, look at that shot for fulham. But with this he went beyond his first test 50 for england and while he was there with jason roy, england were ina there with jason roy, england were in a strong position on a sunny day at lords, but once he lent, he went for 92, familiar batting collapse, another batsmen was involved in a mix up with his captain, joe root, run out the just four. Jonny ba i rstow got run out the just four. Jonny bairstow got a duck in the first innings and a duck in the second innings, a pairfor him, ahead of that test match at edgbaston, and whenjoe that test match at edgbaston, and when joe root that test match at edgbaston, and whenjoe root because you know england are in trouble. England are only 117 ahead and in real trouble. Sam curran took the total up a bit but took one risk too many and with england only 181 runs ahead, that will be not enough although it could bea will be not enough although it could be a tricky chase for ireland. But jeffrey archer, their world cup star bowler, will pay in a t20 match for sussex tomorrow. It was thought he would miss the first ashes test but its suggested he will come back into the fray. Meanwhile, in the t20 blast tonight, yorkshire lancashire at headingley. Lancashire won the toss and chose to bat first, making 170 6 as the captain hit a3. Yorkshire on the other hand struggled as the pace bowler took three wickets including that of the top scorer who made a3. The vikings in the end managed just 169, putting them second in the table, yorkshire fourth. Britains Geraint Thomas has dropped to third overall in the Tour De France with two meaningful stages to go. The defending champion is still 95 seconds behind the overall leader, julian alaphillpipe, but he missed out on narrowing that gap and he was overtaken by his team mate, egan bernal. Simon brotherton was watching in the alps. We had three mountains, all of them over 2000 metres above sea level, so it was a really tough day for the cyclists, and on the third of those climes, a very famous mountain in terms of the Tour De France in the history of the race, near the top, he did lose contact with the rest of the overall contenders. The colombian writer had attacked from that group. He gained time near the top Geraint Thomas countered,. An acceleration, and in that acceleration, and in that acceleration when the others went after him, julian alaphillpipe could not have the pace, he was a few seconds behind but he is such a good dissenter he was able to catch them on the descent so what it meant was that although they did not game time they did not lose time to him on the descent which may have happened had they all gone over the top together. It was a very good day for another colombian as well, taking the stage on his own, 1. 5 minutes clear of the frenchman. Wolves have made a winning return to european football tonight almost a0 years after they were last there with a 2 0 win over crusaders at molineaux. They made the breakthrough towards the end of the first half of their Europa League second round first leg tie thanks to diogojotas strike. It looked like the irish cup winners would limit the damage but, in stoppage time, goalkeeper sean oneill dropped a Joao Moutinho cross straight to ruben vinagre, who tapped into an empty net. In scotland, there was a win for rangers, who beat progres niederkorn of luxembourg 2 0. Thats the team that knocked them out two years ago. Meanwhile, aberdeen, playing in tbilisi, needed a sam cosgrove penalty in the second half to rescue a 1 1 draw against chikhura. The second leg is at pittodrie next thursday. The welsh side connays quay nomads, who knocked kilmarnock out in the previous round, fell to a narrow 1 0 defeat to pa rtizan belgrade, the serbian side scoring the only goal of the game just after the hour mark. These are tonights results, then in ireland, shamrock rovers beat the cypriot side Apollon Limassol 2 1. Lets round up some of the days other sports stories, and Manchester United made it four wins out of four in their pre season tour as they beat tottenham 2 1 in shanghai this afternoon. A well taken goal from united teenager gomez proved to be the winner. Arsenal have signed the real madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos on a season long loan. The 22 year old has made 56 appearances for the spanish giants since joining them from real betis. The gunners have also confirmed the signing of teenage defender William Saliba from Saint Etienne for £27 million. British heavyweight boxer Dillian Whyte could face an eight year ban after failing a drugs test before his points victory over oscar rivas at the weekend. Whyte served a two year ban in 2012 for unknowingly taking an illegal supplement, so any secondary offence would lead to an even longer ban. Englands melissa reid is in contention after the opening round of the fourth womens major of the year. Shes tied for sixth on five under par two shots behind the leader, americas Paula Creamer at the evian championship in france. The last two races at southwell today were abandoned due to the heat. Thejumps meeting had already been brought forward by a couple of hours, and extra shade and vets were available but, with temperatures in the 30s, the final two distance races over hurdles were cancelled. Finally, after shane lowrys open championship victory last weekend, theres more good news for irish golf today because adare manor has been named as the venue for the 2026 ryder cup. The limerick course has beaten the belfry to the honour of hosting the biennel tournament between europe and the usa. The golf course is fantastic and the quality of the hotel, an Award Winning hotel and other facilities there, make it a great venue. It is the right time to be doing something in ireland, and there is a level of excitement following on from it. We can all look forward to another great chapter in irelands golfing history. Thats all from sportsday. Coming up in a moment, the papers. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me arejessica elgot, whos the chief Political Correspondent for the guardian, and lucy fisher, the defence correspondent at the times. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. Something we will feel familiar with. An overheated grenadier guard features on the front page of the guardian, alongside reports of the Climate Emergency being a factor in the record breaking temperatures. Boiling point, reads the daily mail also leading on the hot weather. Britains in meltdown according to the metro its front page reports on meltdown number 1 from brussels over borisjohnsons plans for brexit, and meltdown number two as the soaring temperatures across the country today. A great picture on the front of the mirror, which shows people cooling off in hathersage outdoor pool in derbyshire. If only we could alljust pop up there away from the heatwave, the ft is leading on plans for new monetary stimulus measures from the European Central bank, to boost the ailing eurozone economy. And the times reports on failed attempts by the new Prime Minister to lock in the support of hardline eurosceptics with news that steve baker turned down a ministerial role in Boris Johnsons government. Lets ta ke lets take a look at some of those in more detail now. Starting with the guardian. Brussels rejects johnsons plans. In a way, that is not a new headline, i feel like you may have written that a few times in the past . Certainly, this is not necessarily unexpected, although something we might not have anticipated perhaps is how hard borisjohnson went in today in the house of commons on the need to com pletely house of commons on the need to completely remove the backstop from the agreement to exit the eu and then negotiate the future for the irish border as part of the future relationship rather than the withdrawal, and to say, we will walk away if you dont do that, and thats something irish taoiseach said something that is not living in the world, Michel Barnier said how competitive it was. But then later ina competitive it was. But then later in a phone call withjean claude juncker, Boris Johnson basically said, look, this Withdrawal Agreement has been rejected three times and if you. We will have to change it substantially if you dont wa nt change it substantially if you dont want there to be no deal. That is the analysis that is difficult to argue with. It has been rejected a lot and by a lot of people in government. Both sites have been saying the same things, very long time now, and you just wonder where that shift could occur. Absolutely. Today, we have had Michel Barnier come out strongly to say that the terns for renegotiation that Boris Johnson has suggested are unacceptable, implying that he presumes borisjohnson unacceptable, implying that he presumes Boris Johnson is unacceptable, implying that he presumes borisjohnson is still bluffing. The other thing today that borisjohnson used his bluffing. The other thing today that Boris Johnson used his first address to do was to set the scene for how much no deal preparations will be ramped up in coming weeks. There is a sense that there will be additional spending, we have got this announcement the early £300 Million Contract for additional railfreight has been established to get ready for no deal, there is also talk of a Public Information campaign, and that is important to have that hefty reality of no deal to try and make the eu believe it could potentially happen and try and jam the impulse we are in. Shall we look at the times angle on this . Because this could be quite significant. Tory anger over senior aide tojohnson. This is steve baker, an ardent brexiteer, being offered a job that he says would have left him powerless, what was he offered . Its not clear what he was offered . Its not clear what he was offered and he has not gone into any detail. It is certainly the case that shows how fragile Boris Johnsons political situation is. He has a parliamentary majority of only two macro, and the fact that he has been so brutal in the coal yesterday, getting rid of 70 senior ministers and bringing in a whole new team and daring to allow very senior important like steve baker to flounce out speaks to the fact they must be planning for a general election soon because the situation in the commons is not sustainable for the conservative party going forward. You have someone like steve baker turning down a job, saying, i would be powerless if i took it. You have him on the back benches alongside others who voted remain, people like Philip Hammond who said they will absolutely work to prevent no deal. I think the calculation that Boris Johnson no deal. I think the calculation that borisjohnson took no deal. I think the calculation that Boris Johnson took when no deal. I think the calculation that borisjohnson took when he fired so many people yesterday was that loads of those people are not going to rebel against any deal, they will vote for a deal and deliver brexit. They may try and stop no deal but the first hurdle they need to get over is whether you can pass any sort of deal in the house of commons. Steve baker is a more problematic figure when it comes to that because he has been a very effective whip for the hardline eurosceptics, basically that is the job he does, he is the numbers man for that group of people who have resisted the shape of theresa mays deal, and to have them outside the tent and to feel like he is someone who should have got a bigger position than he was expecting, might cause a problem for Boris Johnson, and there is another group of eurosceptics as well, people who are alienated by borisjohnsons new Senior Adviser during the first leave campaign, the veterans of the eurosceptic movement, they are also outside the tent, so there are still problems with the parliamentary arithmetic. And the appointment of Dominic Cummings raised a lot of eyebrows because he is a controversial figure, eyebrows because he is a controversialfigure, he refused to appear before a select committee when he was asked to do so, and those who were part of the leave campaign tried to get rid of him and he ended up marginalising them. That is right. He called steve baker and the erg narcissistic delusional subset in a tumour that needed excising from the campaign, so that really speaks about the force of his personality and the bombast he brings to bear on his political strategising. He is a very anarchical character, he has huge interest in Civil Service reforms that she was on whitehall this week and hearing about his appointment, and hearing about his appointment, and there are a huge array of people who will be very concerned about the seniority that he will have. Lets look at the independent, johnson ditches tory target on net migration. This was something that was very close to theresa mays heart, to reduce the number of migrants or immigrants into the country down to the tens of thousands from the hundreds. Originally, David Cameron pledged but one that became round his neck towards the end of his premiership and something that theresa may strive to achieve a swim secretary and then did not seem to be prepared to drop, even as Prime Minister and even as it became overwhelmingly clear that the government would not meet this target, and still is not meeting the target. And Boris Johnson was brief today, he is not interested in just putting johnson was brief today, he is not interested injust putting up johnson was brief today, he is not interested in just putting up a tree targets on things, which is taken to mean this pledge which dates back ever since the conservatives gave back into government. What that means that the people who are here and perhaps had a precarious existence, it could mean that things change for them but they are formally recognised. Yes, Boris Johnson spoke to that exact issue today in the commons and signalled strongly that an amnesty would be put in place for the 500,000 undocumented migrants in the uk. He made the case for the fact that for many people it was a legal anomaly that way left in this legal limbo of immigration status, they have lived in the uk and worked here, have had no brushes with the criminaljustice system, so that will be welcomed. Ditching the immigration pledge i think is a double edged sword, some people will be concerned about the direction of movement on migration from that. On the other hand, i do think that repeated emphases by David Cameron and then theresa may that they would achieve what was always an unachievable target, sometimes three times that number was reported within a year, the 100,000 maximum they were promising, serve to undermine trust in politics more generally, and the public could see politicians were sticking to pledge as they had no intention of meeting. But the people who felt the immigration was a problem and may have been a driverfor some of immigration was a problem and may have been a driver for some of them voting to leave the eu, how will that sit with them . When you talk to people in folk leave about they way they frame their campaign, they will say that people are not necessarily looking at arbitrary numbers when it comes to immigration. They want more control, they want to feel like the government have an effect on the number of people coming in and out and can decide to reduce or even exceed the numbers if they want to 01 exceed the numbers if they want to or if the economy demands it. Boris johnsons pitch today was to introduce what he called an australian style points based system. We already have that the eu migrants, but he will try to set up a policy of reforming immigration. Lets finish for this review with the daily mail, boiling point, not the daily mail, boiling point, not the politics this time, but britains basking, it makes it sounds like sharks, on hottestjuly day ever. We can all feel that god in the middle, standing on sentry duty in that uniform. God. He looks like hes about to pass out. He should have had a lot of practice with parading and standing still in heat, but 38 degrees a record. It certainly looks like apple penguin like that for penguin, everything around him is melting. I cant imagine many penguins are used to temperatures like this. I know that on the London Underground it has been a bit like travelling around in a sauna today but it is nice to have good weather. It will be a bit cooler as well, we are told. Jessica and lucy will be back again at 11 30pm. Dont forget, you can see the front pages of the front pages online. If you missed the programme, you can watch it again on bbc iplayer. For the moment though see you ina iplayer. For the moment though see you in a few minutes from me but next it is the weather. It has been the hottestjuly day on record here in the uk, the second hottest day ever, temperatures peaked at 38. 1 celsius in cambridge. It is possible that over the next few hours we could even get updates to these temperatures, but that is the highest temperature weve seen so far. Overnight, thunderstorms break out quite widely before moving northwards to reach scotland. We could see flash flooding from these, lots of lightning out and about, and thenit lots of lightning out and about, and then it will be an uncomfortably warm like a sleeping. Around midnight, a number of cities in england up in the mid 20s and even later in the night temperatures only just slowly ticking down into the high teens. Uncomfortably warm overnight but tomorrow fresher air will work in from the west. More cloud than we have been used to, still some sunny spells and heavy thundery showers across eastern areas. Eastern england and northern scotla nd areas. Eastern england and northern scotland with temperatures in the high 20s but elsewhere temperatures ease significantly. This is bbc news. Im martine croxall. The headlines at 11 00 baking britian thousands flocked to beaches and pools as temperatures peaked at 38. 1 degrees celsius, making it the second hottest day on record but much of the rail network couldnt cope, passengers had to be rescued as overhead power cables were damaged by the heat it is almost unprecedented. I have been working on the railway ten yea rs been working on the railway ten years and have never encountered temperatures like this. On his first full day as Prime Minister, borisjohnson predicts a golden age for britain after brexit, and welcomes in, his new cabinet. Todayis today is the first day of a new approach which will and with our exit from the eu on the 31st
