The foreign secretary, jeremy hunt, says the uk will form a european led Maritime Mission to counter irans piracy, after their seizure of a british registered tanker. Get your suncream ready, this week is set to be the hottest weather of the summer so far. Temperatures rising into the mid 30s in some parts of the country. And motsi mabuse has been confirmed as the newjudge Dame Darcy Bussell on strictly come dancing. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. He accused some of the uks highest ranking public figures of child abuse, torture, even murder. But today carl beech was found guilty of making it all up. A convicted paedophile himself, beech had said he was sexually abused in the 70s and 80s and pointed the finger at, amongst others, the former Prime Minister edward heath, the ex chief of the Defence Staff lord bramall, his allegations led to a £2 Million Police investigation that resulted in not a single arrest. Today the police insisted they acted in good faith. June kelly reports. And hours of Police Interviews he played a part of a victim. Carl breach claimed he had claimed sexual abuse and physical torture at the hand of a vip paedophile ring. He said three of the victims had been murdered, one of them hit by a but the stories were false. The tea rs, but the stories were false. The tears, fate. He alleged that in london and beyond in the 70s and 80s a paedophile network was operating made up of establishment figures. Among those accused by carl beech was lord bramall, former chief of the Defence Staff, and at the age of 91 he found himself in a Police Station answering questions. You are saying that a man with an impeccable record was engaged in the torture of children . Also implicated was his friend and fellow normandy veteran, sir hugh beech. He gave evidence to the which has convicted carl beech. Here, a man has done enormous damage to innocent people who have done no harm at all. An evil man. Carl beech claimed the former tory mp harry potter has murdered two does. He also accused the former home secretary lord britain who died during a Police Investigation, the late conservative Prime Minister sir edward heath, and lord janner. Allegations that senior figures in public life sexually abuse children more than 30 years ago. In 2014 bbc news made a Police Investigation of the story. At this moment carl beech was anonymous and known by the pseudonym, nick, and a senior detective spoke for him and his colleagues. What he said i believed to be credible and true. The Police Investigation went on for 18 months and ended without any arrests or charges. It was another force, northumbria, which was given the job of investigating carl beech. 0fficers discovered that the hospital last night that he was paedophile himself. As he was claiming to be a victim he was downloading hundreds of sexual images of young boys. He also secretly filmed a indecently. This photograph he took of himself undermined his claim that he had been physically tortured. There were no scars on his body. And so the big question, why did he fabricate his abuse story . One of those falsely accused, Harvey Proctor, lost his own and his job while under suspicion. My livelihood was being torn apart, aided by the police. He is now levelling his own accusations against a senior labour politician. Tom watson, the Current Deputy leader of the labour party gave oxygen leader of the labour party gave oxyg e n to leader of the labour party gave oxygen to these incredible claims. But tom watson limit carl beech rejects Harvey Proctor was my call foran rejects Harvey Proctor was my call for an apology. I can understand why hes angry and upset but i dont have anything to apologise to him for. There is absolutely no way that i applied pressure on theresa may and Bernard Hogan howe and properly and Bernard Hogan howe and properly and certainly no way that they would have responded if i had attempted to do that. Harvey proctor has criticised the bbcs journalism. Do that. Harvey proctor has criticised the bbcsjournalism. In a statement the corporation said. Meanwhile, the Police Watchdog announced that no Scotland Yard officers should face a disciplinary process. It remains true that investigating allegations of Sexual Offences is a complex and challenging area of police work. Those complexities are compounded although delegations stretched back many decades as was the case with 0peration midland. Many decades as was the case with operation midland. All of the key officers involved in the carl beech case have now left the police. He deliberately set out to learn other peoples lives and reputations, but it was carl beech himself who now stands convicted of being a paedophile, a fraud and a liar. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 40 and 11 30 this evening in the papers, and our guests joining me tonight are political commentator lance price and katy balls, the deputy Political Editor at the spectator. The Foreign Office minister sir alan duncan has resigned from the government, ahead of an expected borisjohnson victory in the race to be conservative leader and Prime Minister. The ballot of Party Members closed at five oclock this evening, and the winner will be unveiled tomorrow morning. From westminster, heres our Political Editor laura kuenssberg. Ijust voted for borisjohnson to be the next Prime Minister. The envelopes should all have arrived. This is it, i am about to post my vote. For borisjohnson. Crosses in the box put by tory members. I felt it would only be right to vote forjeremy hunt. That would decide who the Prime Minister is for all of us. Eitherjeremy hunt, who has struggled to keep pace, or borisjohnson, the frontrunner, will become the next tory leader. But even before he has won, some ministers have quit because they would not serve him. Why have you decided to resign . You will see my Resignation Letter in a minute. Even one of them who worked alongside him at the Foreign Office. I have very great concerns that he flies by the seat of his pants and it is all a bit haphazard and ramshackle, but there is no personal animosity of any sort, i just think he will go smack into a crisis of government. Sir alan even wanted the commons to have the chance to block mrjohnson becoming Prime Minister if he wins tomorrow, trying and failing to organise an emergency vote that could stop him becoming Prime Minister. The fundamental principle of our democracy is that the Prime Minister is the person who can command a majority in the house of commons, and that is untested, and it is in doubt and i thought that in order to avoid a constitutional crisis we should test that on the tuesday, tomorrow, before he goes to the palace on wednesday. But to his supporters, they know that you have had grave doubts about him, they believe that you would have been moved out of government anyway, and now it looks like this was a plan for the ultimate sort of revenge, trying to stop him having a chance at taking power. This is a constitutional issue, not a personal one. Despite that, the conservatives appear to be on the verge of knowingly choosing a leader who is loved and loathed. At the start of this race, so at the end, it is borisjohnsons to lose. No one, not even here at conservative headquarters, nor in the candidates camps, can be sure of the final result. We will only know when it is announced round the corner in westminster at 11am. But what we do know is the next Prime Minister will face a wall of resistance, and borisjohnsons backers are sure he is the one with a chance of making it through. Absolute resolve as Prime Minister, as the leader of this country that we will leave by the end of october, i think that has been missing. He will restore cabinet collective responsibility so we have a united team, and above all inject a bit of optimism into this enterprise we are embarked on. When the gazebos are back on westminsters green, that means Something Big is about to happen. Tory members overall verdict will be known before too long. Ill be backing boris to be the next Prime Minister. I voted forjeremy hunt. Im putting my vote behind jeremy hunt because it is the least worst option. Whoever is next wont even please all of their people all of the time. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, westminster. The member of parliament for dover, charlie elphicke, has been charged with sexual assault. Mr elphicke is accused of assaulting one woman in 2007 and a second in 2016. He has been suspended by the conservative party and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in september. His lawyers say he denies any wrongoing, and will defend himself vigorously. The shadow cabinet has backed Jeremy Corbyns plans to speed up labours disciplinary processes in the most serious cases of alleged anti semitism. He told a meeting this afternoon that he wanted a new way of dealing with the most extreme cases. Mr corbyn said the processes for dealing with serious cases were not good enough and some had taken too long to resolve. Jo swinson has been elected as the next leader of the liberal democrats. Ms swinson, who beat her rival ed davey, has been the partys deputy leader for two years. It follows the decision of Sir Vince Cable earlier this year to stand down. The party which has has 12 mps in the house of commons came second in the recent european elections. The party wants the uk to remain in the eu and enjoyed a surge of support in the local elections. 0ur deputy Political Editor john pienaar has more. New face, same promise stop brexit or try. Jo swinson was favourite to win and she did, easily. Jo swinson, 47,000. Cheering. Standing against brexit has been the lib dems best game plan, and shes sticking to it. In the face of nationalism, populism, the catastrophe of brexit, the two old parties have failed. 0ur party has been clear on brexit from day one. We believe the uks best future is as members of the european union, and thats why, as your leader, i will do whatever it takes to stop brexit. Shes come a long way. This tax on learning is not acceptable. As a student, jo swinson campaigned against tuition fees. Westminsters youngest mp in 2005, she was a minister in the coalition which introduced the tuition fees that helped wreck the lib dems popularity. She lost her seat in 2015, like all but a handful of lib dems. Back two years later, she was elected deputy leader and also made history by taking her baby into the commons. Now she must nurse a recovery thats brought in one defecting labour mp so far and many remain supporting voters. If there were an election tomorrow, even with the current figures, 40 or 50 liberal democrat mps would certainly seem like a perfectly realistic aspiration. Whether or not they can go further than that, whether or not, for example, they can eat further into the labour vote by winning over the support of disenchanted remain voters, that, i think, is the challenge. And its still a big challenge. Her party has staged something of a comeback, grown stronger as two Party Politics has grown weaker. But if the future depends on brexit, its a future no one can predict, whoever the new leader. John pienaar, bbc news. Im joined now by sean kemp, who was a former liberal democrat special advisor during the coalition government. And before that he served as the partys deputy head of press. Thank you so much for coming in. Your reaction to the election ofjo swinson . I was always a supporter. She has the ability to cut through in the media, probably the strongest media performer in the party and for a lib dem it is always about getting noticed. They only have 12 mps at the moment, i remember when they had 63 it was still a battle to get noticed. She has the charisma and personality that came through in her speech today. The work on tv and radio, they got to try and reach cut through to people. Many people feel even now that they are not paid much attention to us as a party. You know her, what kind of person she . She is very driven and determined. Shes been involved in politics from a very young age in her 20s. Also very warm. Stands up for what she believes in, equal rights, for example, she has a real campaigning record. And she is not tribal, which is important, the way politics is at the moment. She is very much a lib then, but she is prepared to work with people from other parties across boundaries if they agree around certain principles. That is something that is going to be a real strength going forward. Shes been elected at a good time after the strong showing in the european and local elections but how do the lib dems capitalise on that success . The thing about brexit as it has given them an opportunity to cut through again. They have this one issue, brexit, and a clear message that enables them to campaign. That has worked so far. We have seen su ccesses. Worked so far. We have seen successes. They will look to broaden that. We saw in her speech, she talked brexit and about remain, but liberal values of openness and tolerance. For the lib dems there is an opportunity that people look at the conservatives and labour and see them as being less centrist, certainly more ideological and set in their ways. But they are standing up in their ways. But they are standing upfor in their ways. But they are standing up for liberal values like openness and tolerance. During the cannon and claire years it seemed like everyone stood up for that, now it is not quite the same. So it is reasonable, and an anti tribal message. Quite the same. So it is reasonable, and an antitribal message. That could seem a bit nebulous. If the uk does leave the eu, and borisjohnson and jeremy hunt are saying that we could do, could be the new Prime Minister on october the 31st, but is the message of the lib dems beyond that . If anyone thinks when we leave the eu, that is the end of brexit as a topic of political discussion, i have terrible news, the impact of brexit will go on for decades in this country. The lib dems have got policies coming out of their ears. It has never been there problem, they have no shortage of policies on taxation and climate change, a strong record. Where we have struggled is with the emotional connection. Most people react to politics in an emotional way. That is where the more liberal, tolerant message, it does sound nebulous, you are right but as a party we have lacked that, something that sums up who we are. A usp. So there is an opportunity now on the central ground to do that. Lots on environmental and educational policies, and the party has an opportunity to give a characterisation of themselves that makes them stand out. Thank you for coming in to talk to us. The headlines carl beech, a man who claimed to have been abused as a child by a westminster paedophile ring, is convicted of perverting the course ofjustice and fraud. Voting ends in the conservative leadership race, as a senior minister quits in protest over a possible borisjohnson victory. Jo swinson is named as the first female leader of the liberal democrats, beating sir ed davey. Sport now, and a full round up from the bbc sport centre. Heres lizzie. Lets start with swimming and adam peatys domination continues with his third successive World Championship gold in the 100 metres breaststroke. After breaking his own world record in the semi finals yesterday going sub 57 seconds, he once again blitzed the opposition in the final in south korea this morning in a time of 57. 14 seconds. Significantly for british swimming, silver went to peatys team mate james wilby, who won his first world medal. But he was a long way behind peaty who has now recorded the 15 fastest times in the event in history and says he can go even quicker. My my big achievement was going faster than yesterday, being a better version of myself but i made a tiny mistake trying to force the speed a bit too much, but it is important coming here, im still learning. I have got 56, then im still learning, always trying to improve, and that is important to have that going into the olympics next year. It looks like welsh superstar gareth bale might be moving to the Chinese Super league. The 30 year old has 3 years on his contract with real madrid but he was left out of their pre season match against Bayern Munich and coach Zinedine Zidane claims it would be best for everyone if he leaves. In response, bales agent has fired back that the real coach is a disgrace for the way hes treated bale, whos won four Champions League titles with real and is statistically one of their best players of all time. We understand two chinese clubs are interested and bale could earn £1 million a week. A week after winning the world cup englands cricketers have a major gear change as they prepare for the ashes which start in 10 days time and theyve chosen ireland as their sparring partners. The first time theyve played them in a test match. The four day game begins on wednesday at lords and england will field 8 of their world cup winners among the squad of 16. 0pener rory burns wasnt in the historic one day side but is proud of his team mates. See the boys get over the line last sunday was an amazing thing, to get in amongst that feeling, as you can imagine, there is a fair amount of excitement. A couple of sore heads as well. But it has been a real good place to get in amongst. And the ireland test match first then the ashes later in the summer, it is a real mindset change. That is the key thing. You have got that high, then youve got to put your mind to doing a bit of first day, first session, so yes, that is it. Danny ciprianis chances of being selected for the Rugby World Cup appear slim after he was left out of englands latest training squad. He has now been omitted from the squad travelling to italy, and not for injury reasons. Boxing promoter eddie hearn says theres a good chance anthonyjoshuas rematch with andy ruinunior will take place in cardiff. Joshua lost all three of his heavyweight titles to ruiz in new york injune. It was one of the sports biggest upsets and hearn says the venue for the rematch will be decided this week. I think cardiff is the frontrunner right now. He doesnt care where it is but unfortunately hes got to make the decision, im not making it for him. The Training Team say, common sense would say that home is better than a way in any sport. But there is the opportunity to go to Madison Square gardens. That is of interest as well. Right now, cardiff is certainly the front runner. The highly rated race horse sea of class has died as a result from a severe bout of colic diagnosed earlier this month. As a three year old filly she won last years irish 0aks and yorkshire 0aks and was also a narrowly beaten runner up behind another british star, enable, in flat racings prix de larc de triomphe. That is all the sport. We will have more for you at 10 30pm on sportsday. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt has warned iran that the uk is seeking to put together a european led Maritime Mission to protect ships passing through the strait of hormuz after a british registered tanker was seized there by iran last week. Its the latest development in the growing tension in a globally critical region. On one side are the arab states including a number of key allies. 0n the other, iran. Between them the strait of hormuz. At its narrowest point its only 21 miles across. But in total a fifth of the worlds oil exports are squeezed through this narrow channel. So any disruption there affects Global Oil Supplies and as a result oil prices. 0ur Diplomatic Correspondent James Robbins has the latest. The iranian flag now flies above stena impero, the british registered tanker seized on friday. On board, the crew appear relaxed, but we have no idea of the circumstances of this iranianfilming. The family of one of them confirmed to the bbc that this is indeed the ships crew. The tanker was taken by irans revolutionary guard corps, who issued this radio warning before boarding. If you obey, you will be safe. Alter your course to 360 degrees immediately, over. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt is now calling the iranian action state piracy. He has talked to allies about a possible european led Maritime Force for the gulf, one deliberately designed to keep the far more hawkish United States at arms length. If iran continues on this dangerous path, they must accept the price will be a larger western military presence in the waters along their coastline, not because we wish to increase tensions, but simply because freedom of navigation is a principle which britain and its allies will always defend. Will this crisis only be resolved by releasing the tanker grace 1, accused of carrying iranian oil to syria and seized by Royal Marines in gibraltar waters. Britain insists it acted entirely within the law. Iran is also accusing britain of piracy. So, is an eventual tanker swap all but inevitable . What about the risk of irans far larger conflict with the United States spinning out of control . I dont think anything right now will provoke an all out war because i think iran and the United States, neither country wants war. It could escalate in a serious way just by mistake. And those tensions have now increased another notch, with President Trump dismissing as iranian lies a chilling new claim it has arrested 17 cia spies and sentenced some of them to death. Richard meade is the managing editor of the shipping News Organisation lloyds list. Thank you for coming in to talk to us. What is your reaction to the latest developments that we have seen . It is to be welcomed. The shipping industry has been seeking adequate protection within the security levels in the latter one and a challenge for the uk government is getting the eight anchor stranded to the west of the strait of hormuz, the advisory is that they should not travel through the strait of hormuz. If we see adequate protection coming in then they will be escorted through, but this is going to be not necessarily a short term fix, we will need to see some proper security measures for uk flagged ships in the region. How long could that take . Depends on diplomatic efforts and whether short or long term it will have a Significant Impact in terms of what the ship do from here on. We only have a few uk flag vessels were thinking about. Not a huge amount of vessels compared to the amount of traffic going through this region, but this is an International Problem requiring an international solution, so this is to be welcomed. requiring an international solution, so this is to be welcomed. If they are stranded, what can they do . They are stranded, what can they do . They are waiting foran are stranded, what can they do . They are waiting for an advisory from the uk government, hopefully with an escort coming through that will allow them to get out. I rather think that the shipowners will be giving serious consideration as to whether or not they want to fly a uk flag. Can they select a different flag . It is a choice of the ship owner where they fly the flag. We are seeing a number of charters moving away from the uk flag in terms of immediate risk assessment. They have plenty of options. Many tankers are flowing through and only the uk lags are having problems, but this comes at a difficult time for the uk shipping industry. We have seen over 30 of the uk flag fleet evaporate in the last 12 months because of brexit concerns. Can you confirm what you mean by a uk flag fleet . So a shipowner, you might be swedish or chinese, they might be indian, they decide to sail under a ukflag, indian, they decide to sail under a uk flag, why would they make that decision . A number of reasons, commercial and political. Any ship trading internationally has to fly a National State flag. Choosing the uk flag is generally at the decision that it flag is generally at the decision thatitis flag is generally at the decision that it is a good quality flag, but with brexit there are some serious problems, in terms of what the shipowner chooses to do. And there are many options, you can go anywhere in the world and choose any flag. By choosing a uk flag, money change hands . They pay a Registration Fee to the flag registration, in this case the uk government, but it is not the biggest cost shipowner would worry about. When they think about flag they think about quality and the ability of the flag to protect the shipowners. You have to ask you to get out your crystal ball. What do you think will happen next . Much depends on whether this is going to be seen as an isolated tit for tat issue between the iranians and the uk, once we have seen the tanker being held in gibraltar, there will being held in gibraltar, there will bea being held in gibraltar, there will be a solution there, whether that de escalate the situation suitably for the uk to continue taking its ships through the strait of hormuz, i dont know, but i think we will see some reflagging and some charters going away from the uk for the time being. Thank you for coming in and talking to us. The government has postponed its decision on whether to exclude the controversial chinese firm huawei from the roll out of 5g mobile phone networks. Earlier our Technology Correspondent rory cellanjones told us more. These networks are coming and they will be very important, and everybody knew the key question in this is whether huawei would be allowed to have a role. America has been very opposed to that, putting pressure on the uk. Well, culture secretaryjeremy pressure on the uk. Well, culture secretary Jeremy Wright has just appeared in the commons to publish this supply chain review. Hes gone through it and set at the end, we havent answered this key question about huawei because we are still uncertain what the us is up to. In may, the us announced it was effectively banning us companies from working with the chinese firm. ButJeremy Wright from working with the chinese firm. But Jeremy Wright says, from working with the chinese firm. ButJeremy Wright says, we are not clear. Weve sought clarity on the extent and implications, but the position is not yet entirely clear and, until it is, we concluded it would be wrong to make specific decisions in relation to huawei in the uk, so its been kicked down the road again. I want to bring you some breaking news coming into us from us prosecutors, who have said that the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will not Face Criminal Charges over an alleged rape. Carl beech, a man who claimed to have been abused as a child by a westminster paedophile ring, is convicted of perverting the course ofjustice and fraud. Voting ends in the conservative leadership race as a senior minister quits in protest over a possible Boris Johnson victory. Jo swinson is named as the first female leader of the liberal democrats, beating sir ed davey. You have put your trust in me, not only to lead our party but to lead and grow a bigger, open, liberal movement which our country so desperately needs. The foreign secretary says he wants increased protection for shipping in the gulf as he condemns the seizing of a british flagged tanker by iran as an act of piracy. Prosecutors say portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will not face rape charges in the United States. Rival protestors held demonstations near a Nottingham Primary School this morning over the question of relationships lessons and sex education. One group claim that the teaching of children was being sexualised. But some parents and their supporters also turned out, saying whats being taught is a vital part of education. Mike 0sullivan reports. Monday morning, a couple of hundred yards from fernwood Primary School at wollaton in nottingham. Testers opposed to the teaching of relationships and sex education, called rsc, claim the children are being sexualised, as counter protesters look on. Costa we are against any form of sexualisation of young children, especially the material in secondary school is more horrific. There are no children here, so what is the issue . Its in relation to sexualisation of children. We are trying to present our viewpoint. Nottingham city council says rse is pa rt Nottingham City Council says rse is part of the National Curriculum and teachers are making sure the right conversations happen at the right time. After talks with the police and council, the protesters went on toa and council, the protesters went on to a patch of land just down the road from the school, and meanwhile pa rents road from the school, and meanwhile parents and supporters of the school gathered on the road opposite. We have been supporting each other. They do not represent us or our children, and they never will do. We dont know why they are here. The school has been extremely accommodating and said, if you dont wa nt accommodating and said, if you dont want your children in these lessons, ta ke want your children in these lessons, take them out. Its stupid. Our country is sexualised as it is, and we need education for our kids, they need to know whats going on in the world. They are just teaching the basics. I think its ridiculous. And infographics has been made on the City Councils social media sites to inform content about the contents of these lessons. There are plenty of things we see on tv and children might see on their phones and computers which would sexualised them because there are not protections their four children, but certainly not through which gives protection of children from undue sexualisation. Cue the City Council Leader said it appeared none of the anti rse protesters had a direct link with fernwood and the majority of people were calm and respectful of people were calm and respectful of each other. This time tomorrow well know who our next Prime Minister is going be after the result of the conservative Party Leadership contest is announced at lunchtime. Either borisjohnson orjeremy hunt will be moving in to 10 downing street. Today, the Foreign Office minister sir alan duncan resigned from the government, quitting ahead of an expected Boris Johnson victory. The chancellor Philip Hammond and justice secretary david gauke have already said they will resign if mrjohnson wins, and its thought other ministers could follow suit. To discuss the contest and what will happen over the coming days we are joined by two young conservative members. Jack powell is editor of the political website 1828, which promotes economic and social liberalism. Hes a borisjohnson supporter. And also with us elena bunbury, who works for the party and is a jeremy hunt supporter. Welcome and thank you for coming in. I take it you both voted. Yes. Boris johnson is the front runner. Are there any indications that your man has gained any ground . Absolutely. 0ne has gained any ground . Absolutely. One thing weve seen throughout is so many people have said they have switched to hunt, whereas we dont see many people who have switched to boris. We had positive results from the hustings, so its looking like weve turned a lot of peoplesmines around. How confident are you Boris Johnson will win . I thinkjeremy did a good job, and johnson will win . I thinkjeremy did a goodjob, and it johnson will win . I thinkjeremy did a good job, and it would be disappointing for him if he hadnt turned around some supporters, because i think the vote will be pretty overwhelming, but i think boris can be confident hes got the backing of the members and a significant proportion of the country to go, get brexit done and start a new agenda for britain. The problem with jeremy hunt throughout the election is he is very much the may continuity candidate, and i think that tomorrow you will see a new dawn for the conservative party, a fresh agenda, and borisjohnson leadership. Just a word about the campaign. What do you make of it . Jeremy hunt has been accused of making personal attacks against borisjohnson, hasnt making personal attacks against Boris Johnson, hasnt he . Making personal attacks against borisjohnson, hasnt he . Id like to think its been a positive and friendly campaign. I see hustings at interviews where interviewers have tried to push jeremy interviews where interviewers have tried to pushjeremy to make those remarks, and he has not spoken about it. I think there are aspects of mr johnsons life that need to be brought to attention, because people need to know who will represent them, but i dont think there have been malicious attacks, and i think a lot of other candidates would have been a lot more half. Jeremy hunt has done dozens of interviews, but there is a perception that Boris Johnson has been more evasive. Would you agree . There has been a lot of talk that he has been evasive and not as forthcoming as jeremy, but i dont think hes had the freedom to be as forthcoming as jeremy. Dont think hes had the freedom to be as forthcoming asjeremy. I think its quite clear from the start that whatever percentage of the vote, borisjohnson will be whatever percentage of the vote, Boris Johnson will be our next whatever percentage of the vote, borisjohnson will be our next Prime Ministerso, borisjohnson will be our next Prime Minister so, for example, in terms of President Trump and his remarks, boris has had to be a bit more reserved in his remarks because he knows it will likely be the future Prime Minister, whereas jeremy knows it will likely be the future Prime Minister, whereasjeremy hunt has a little bit more leeway to be a bit bolder on some things, because he knows he will not have that awesome responsibility at the end of it. Id like to see more natural boris, which i think you have seen towards the end of the campaign, but i think what you also have to see, from his critics who say he is not Prime Ministerial, is they cant haveit Prime Ministerial, is they cant have it both ways. They cant have the boris of total unleashed rhetoric and also total Prime Ministerial style. You have to have somewhere in the middle, and i think boris has done a pretty good job of it and his critics cant have it both ways. I said when we set this out before i looked at other candidates, because i was in touch with mrjohnson, and i said the only person who can bring down boris is boris himself, and now i think jeremy has an amazing job. Theyve hidden boris away, because they know what hes like, he offends people, he says the wrong thing, and that really worries me, that that could be our Prime Minister. In hostile situations, i want somebody we can trust to say what they need to say. When mr hunt met with the chinese, he called them japanese, so not everybody is immune from gaffes. Boris says what he thinks. But boris says what he thinks. But boris is known by his gaps. Dont you want a politician who is saying what he believes . I dont defend all of what boris has said, but i want a politician who says what they think and well do what they say. You are both conservatives and i presume you will agree on the fact that at the moment your party is bitterly divided. I wonder, moment your party is bitterly divided. Iwonder, weve moment your party is bitterly divided. I wonder, weve already seen the resignation of foreign 0ffice minister alan duncan, and more are threatened if borisjohnson winds. How confident are you that, if he does, he will be able to unite the bitterly divided conservative party, which presumably is something you want . Absolutely, and i will get behind whoever is Prime Minister, because i am a conservative. I am not sure if he can. He is such a divisive person. He is appended so many communities he has offended so many communities. As a hard brexiteer, and i am in favour of it, ifi brexiteer, and i am in favour of it, if i speak of it from a selfless point of view, that will upset a lot of people and push away a lot of people who maybe would have been within our party before. How difficult do you think it will be for him to govern, not only because of the potential resignations, backbenchers causing trouble, but also the parliamentary arithmetic, in terms of leaving the eu . |j also the parliamentary arithmetic, in terms of leaving the eu . I think it will be very difficult, and probably both of us would say we will have to have a general election very will have to have a general election very soon, will have to have a general election very soon, whether or not they want it. When it comes to divisiveness and boris, yes, he is divisive, but if we look back on some of our best Prime Ministers, doesnt matter what side of the political spectrum you are on, they are divisive. I want a candidate who says what they think and you are never going to take all of the country with you. I think what we forgotten in the last few years, with brexit, leave or remain, is you never take the country wholly together with you if you go on a Political Programme to implement radical change, and brexit is a huge difference of direction for this country. So what you have to accept is, you know, not everybody is going to like boris. Not everybody liked margaret thatcher. Not everybody would defend Clement Attlees programme in government. You have to accept, here is his programme, do you like it, yes or no . I wish wed focus more on the personality rather than the personality and the forward thinking for britain. I am disappointed at how jeremy thinking for britain. I am disappointed at howjeremy hunt has focused on things that i think he knows are not really what people want. When you talk to people out there, they want brexit done, they wa nt there, they want brexit done, they want a school is properly funded, police on the streets driving down crime. They dont care about boriss private life. You are rolling your eyes, but i want to slightly move on. You essentially are the future of the conservative party. How optimistic do you feel about the future of your party . We need to get brexit done, simple as that. If we dont, i think our party is done and, if it comes to things like a second referendum, and i will be heavily questioning my membership, and ive been a member since i was 15. What about members who voted to remain . I think you are addressing a crucial point. Can the conservative party continue in the future is one party . I hope it does, because i think its the only platform that can stop what i oppose, a Jeremy Corbyn government, but the problem isi corbyn government, but the problem is i see it is notjust leave and remain. You have people within the party, but i think we are both on the free market spectrum, but people are heavily pro state intervention in the economy, who are four syntaxes. We think what we need in the country is more economic and personal freedom, the country is more economic and personalfreedom, personal responsibility, and its notjust brexit. I think for the hope of stopping Jeremy Corbyn that the party survives, but do it think it will . Im not sure, iwouldnt party survives, but do it think it will . Im not sure, i wouldnt bet on it. Good to hear your thoughts. Thanks for coming in to talk to us. The authorities in hong kong have defended the police, after groups of pro democracy protesters were attacked by gangs of masked men at a train station. 45 people were injured in the incident which happened after a rally in the centre of the city. 0pposition politicians have accused police of being suspiciously slow to arrive at the scene. You may find some of the pictures in stephen mcdonells report upsetting. Gangs dressed in white were waiting for pro democracy activists to arrive. Then they attacked. When it seemed that hong kongs political crisis could not lurch into more violent territory, this targeted assault by unidentified men proved the theory wrong. Individual protesters were pursued and set upon by groups bearing home made weapons. This person was at the yuen long mtr station along with the mostly young demonstrators on their way home. Police were finally on the scene but only after dozens were injured, some seriously. Today, a spokeswoman for the local station faced an angry crowd who are accusing officers with colluding with gang members. Passions are running high here today. The police are trying to explain to this community that they still have their best interests at heart and yet many who have come along are not happy with the explanation, that the reason the officers were not at the mtr last night was because of security concerns. Witnesses here say hong kongs underworld is now being mobilised to crush the pro democracy movement. We do have quite a number of gangsters in the area and they were not unfamiliar figures. Hong kongs leader under pressure, carrie lam, said she was shocked by these events, calling on police to apprehend those involved. And there have been arrests. But with talk of a protest march to the scene of the clashes in the coming days, violence here could only increase. Stephen mcdonell, bbc news, hong kong. The Company Whirlpool has apologised to the owners of its tumble dryers, as it launches a recall of half a million machines over fire risk concerns. Certain models of the brands hotpoint, creda, indesit, swan and proline dryers have been blamed for causing hundreds of fires. Whirpools Vice President said the firm is now offering free replacements or partial refunds. Sian lloyd reports. The devastating consequences of a fire caused by a faulty tumble dryer. This flat in north wales was engulfed in flames. 19 year old Bernard Hender and 39 year old Doug Mctavish couldnt escape in time and lost their lives. A coroner found that an electrical fault in a hotpoint machine was to blame. Today, whirlpool, which owns hotpoint, indesit, creda, swan and proline brands, apologised to customers affected by dangerous tumble dryers sold in the uk over a timescale of 11 years. Theres probably been some confusion in terms of the messaging, and the fact is, in any of those cases, we do apologise to our customers, to those who may have been confused, and it is an opportunity to say we are sorry, but also an opportunity to say we want to do more. Since problems were first identified in 2015, millions of dryers have been replaced or repaired by whirlpool, but they hadnt issued a full recall until now. This safety saga has been going on for years, but now whirlpool will have to go much further in the choice that they offer people affected, to include a free replacement tumble dryer and no extra costs for collection or disposal of the old machine. Customers are also being offered the option of a discounted upgrade or a partial refund, but tracking down all of the remaining owners may be a challenge. There are still hundreds of thousands of machines out there in peoples homes that whirlpool cannot track down. They need to really up their game here to make this recall effective, and if they are unable to do so, we need to see the government step in and make sure these come out of peoples homes. The government said at least 750 fires had been caused by faulty whirlpool machines. Customers who believe they may have been affected are being advised to check the company website. Sian lloyd, bbc news. The newjudge to replace Dame Darcey Bussell on strictly come dancing has been revealed. Shes an International Dancing champion, a formerjudge on the show in germany and she has a Strong Family connection to the show. Her sister 0ti has been a professional on four series of the programme. Lets talk now to entertainment journalist emma bullimore. Tell us a bit more about motsi mabuse. Yes, its very exciting. Shes not there because of. She is there because she is brilliant. She was on the German Version for years and years, a professional dancer before that, and all the professional dancers on strictly know this. I think people know weve got somebody proper. You say she has proper credentials, but very much skewed to the latin end of the dance spectrum, which if i am right means that all the judges now specialise in latin and there isnt anybody left like len specialising in traditional ballroom. Anybody left like len specialising in traditional ballroomlj anybody left like len specialising in traditional ballroom. I dont think she will accept any boring footwork. That show is such a juggernaut. People get used to changes really quickly and they are excited to be back in that land of glittering. Motsi mabuse, the big problem, some might think, is that ultimately shell have to sit in judgment of her own sister, 0ti. How will that work in the dance off . think it will be strange, but she did it on the german show, and weve seen it on the other International Versions with otherjob catching siblings desperate judging siblings. I think she will be great, but in a crucial dance off, they get so emotional and prepare so much, it will be difficult. It could cause problems, especially when everything in the show is front page news, and people really make their voices heard if they think a decision is unheard. Ican heard if they think a decision is unheard. I can see problems down the line on that one, and it will be interesting to see if 0ti has a serious contender as her partner this year or if they go for somebody who might not make the finals to make it easier. There have been lots of rumours about this, including at the beginning 0ti herself. Why do you think they went for motsi mabuse . I think they needed somebody with the knowledge of the ballroom world. There were some rumours it was a former champion, but having somebody on strictly like that or somebody on strictly like that or somebody who everybody needed to respect. She was brilliant on the German Version, so i think there we re German Version, so i think there were lots of reasons to choose her. I dont think 0ti was ever going to get thejob. She is i dont think 0ti was ever going to get the job. She is too fabulous you want to see her doing her thing out there, not stuck behind a desk. She replaces Dame Darcey Bussell. How big are those shoes to fill . She will be put off very fondly, but there has been lots of chopping and changing in that seat in the judges, so why we will look back and think, she was a greatjudge, we are perfectly accepting and see somebody else in that seat for the ultimately, how important are the judges, or is this actually show the success of which each season depends on the contestants . If youve got good contestants with great personalities, the show will do well. If not, we are all a bit like, its not as good as last year. 0bviously, its not as good as last year. Obviously, the contenders will obviously be the main factor, and id say this is pretty much the best panel on television. They have a wealth of knowledge, rather than on other shows where they go, smashed it, and thats all they have to say. These people studied dance for a long time and they really know what they are talking about. I think the judges are very important. Good to hear your thoughts, and i can already tell you counting down the days until the next series. Good to talk to, thanks, and keep dancing.
