Leading surgeons have told this programme that women having Breast Implants like this one should be warned about a condition linked to chronic pain and extreme fatigue. Tens of thousands of women on online forums claim they have suffered from whats known as Breast Implant illness. It is not an official diagnosis, and there is currently little Scientific Evidence that implants cause the symptoms, although the drug regulation body in the us, the fda, has begun to investigate the link. Patients have told this programme they were never warned about the condition, and some have returned to full health after having their implants removed. Surgeons say more research is needed but patients should be warned about the condition. Anna collinson has this exclusive report. Naomi macarthur is five feet two and can lift double her weight. Shes a Fitness Instructor and is proud of her strength. Butjust five months ago, her life was very different. Um, so, yeah, im terrified. But i think. Sorry. In november 2014, naomi decided to get Breast Implants. She knew she looked great but she felt like she was dying. I had the most horrific symptoms. Like, i remember i started getting like severe pains in my stomach, like gut problems. The tiredness that i felt, it always felt like i had ran a marathon and dug like a million trenches and like done loads of stuff and i hadnt done anything. I was writing with a pen and i said to my mum, like, i actually cant write. Its too hard. Like, writing with a pen was that tiring. Naomi changed her diet and made lifestyle changes, but the symptoms kept coming, including hair loss, allergies and rashes. Sorry. Itsjust, like, every time i think about it, it upsets me. Of course. I knew id get emotional doing this. Take your time. We can stop whenever you want. Its been, like, absolutely horrific. Like, the amount of pain and, like, suffering that ive had to go through and going to clinics and hospitals and doctors and saying to them, like, im so ill, and theyrejust, like, saying its not do with the implants. Last summer, naomi discovered breast impla nt illness a condition which consists of a broad range of autoimmune symptoms. She joined Online Support groups and soon found that there were tens of thousands of other women like her. She decided to start a video diary. Like, if id gone to the clinic before i had my breast surgery and they had told me that, you know, you can develop autoimmune conditions, i would have never had implants. And i think people need to be more aware of this. Im about to go down, and im scared. Naomi made the difficult decision to pay thousands of pounds to have her implants removed. There was no guarantee her health would improve. Hopefully, its for the best. Yeah, im sure it will be for the best. Not too close. Very quickly, the symptoms that had plagued naomis life for the past four years disappeared. I cant believe how bloody amazing i feel and how much ive bounced back. Its insane. And, like i said, my eyes are gone completely, like, white. Like, what the hell . I had completely bloodshot eyes all the time, and my eyes are white now. This is crazy. But despite stories like naomis, theres still scepticism in parts of the medical community. I spoke to one surgeon who said he does not believe that Breast Implant illness is a thing. How does it feel hearing Something Like that . I find that really. Actually saying that is kind of. Kind of a bit offensive. Ifeel a bit offended by it, really, because i know, like, what i experienced was real. Like, who are you going to believe the surgeon, whos making money, or the thousands of other women who are ill . There have been more than a million Breast Implant operations in the uk, and most of them turned out well. But complications can arise, which can ruin lives. Complications which some women say they were never warned about. Consultant Plastic Surgeon nora nugent has helped patients like naomi. Breast implant illness is poorly recognised, to be perfectly honest. Its where women have a series of symptoms, and they can vary from person to person. They havent conclusively proven that silicone causes direct harm to the bodys tissues, or causes these reactions, but there are not very many studies directly studying these effects. And if you get an improvement after having your implants removed, then clearly that was the right course of action to take. Going forward, do you think all surgeons should be warning their patients about breast impla nt illness . Ideally, yes, i think patients need the most up to date information possible. Leading surgeons, including the British Association of aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, have told this programme that women should be told about the risk of Breast Implant illness ahead of surgery, despite their still being limited Scientific Evidence. Anyone who believes they may have the condition is advised to see their gp, but removing an implant does not guarantee improved health. Breast implant illness has been discussed amongst women for decades. Do you think its shocking that we still dont know exactly what it is and whats going on . I think its quite disappointing that we dont have all the answers, but i think its encouraging that we are still looking for the answers. Hundreds of thousands of women were affected by the pip implant scandal, which broke in 2010. The implants were twice as likely to rupture and were filled with silicone used in mattresses. Six years later, a National Safety implant register was set up, and women are encouraged tojoin it so they can be traced if something goes wrong in the future. Its hoped it will also lead to a better understanding of breast impla nt illness. Naomi and i have come to meet a woman who is preparing to have her implants removed also known as explanted. Hello. Nice to meet you. Steph harris has tried three different types of implants and, each time, has experienced autoimmune symptoms. This is one of my explanted implants ive got here. So this was my original pip implant that had first time around. Steph previously had Breast Cancer, but her doctors believe her symptoms the Chronic Fatigue and pain are impla nt related. Its cost her a lot, including being a nurse. Its so isolating. I spend 90 of my time alone, lying down in my bed. I cant read for very long. I cant write things for very long. My memory really struggles with it. I watch movies. Thats what i do 90 of the time. And then people see me like this with my makeup on and up and they think, well, youre fine, theres nothing wrong with you. But only those that are really close to me see that, after this, i will be in bed for two days, because im running on adrenaline right now. To deal with the Breast Cancer was one thing, but, to be honest, that was easier. Thats going to sound really strange. The chemotherapy was much easier to deal with than the Chronic Fatigue. And i know that, for a lot people, that willjust sound completely ridiculous, but i guess im unique i can say ive been through both and this is harder. The uks medical devices watchdog has told us more than 1500 adverse incidents involving Breast Implants have been reported in the past five years. It currently does not recognise breast impla nt illness. Steph wants the mhras reporting system to be made more accessible, so the true scale of implant complications are known. Steph, you are having your explant onjuly 15th, so a few weeks time. Naomi, have you got any advice for her . I completely understand how horrible it is. Ill be phoning you, going, oh, im worried about this. Yeah, i know, but its actually, like, what kind of, like, made me feel better about it all wasjust, like, knowing that, like, thinking about next year. Thats it. Its dreaming about things about like that, like going for a walk. And, yeah, if i could get back to work, even if ijust get a little bit more energy tojust make life a bit easier, it would be fantastic. You know, like, in the end, like, health is the most important thing. Yeah. Its now a week since steph had her implants removed. She says shes feeling pretty good and has already been for a few gentle walks. Shes hopeful about the future. Lets speak now to michelle bredin, who had her implants removed last week because of the impact Breast Implant illness symptoms were having on her life. Kate michalkova, says shes been living with Breast Implant illness for three years now and is currently saving up to have her implants removed. Annette stevens, who believes she had Breast Implant illness and says her symptoms were so bad she wished she would die. She had her implants removed two years ago. Sarah beech, who says she has lived with Breast Implant illness symptoms for years. Dr una coales, a former gp who had her implants removed injanaury because she believes they were making ill. And mr naveen cavale, who is a Plastic Surgeon at the nhss Kings College hospital and the uks National Secretary for the International Society of plastic surgery. Thank you all very much indeed for coming in. First of all, ladies, if you wouldnt mind just listing the symptoms that you have had over the yea rs, symptoms that you have had over the years, starting with you, michelle. Too many to list, i will take up the whole show, but my most chronic ones we re whole show, but my most chronic ones werejoint pain, muscle pain, neck pain, Chronic Fatigue, no sleeping at night, heart palpitations, pains in my chest. I had Chronic Fatigue, ibs symptoms, really bad heart palpitations at night, like a jolt to the heart, like i had to take a really deep breath, joint pain as well, lack of concentration. Memory issues, my hair fell out, well, lack of concentration. Memory issues, my hairfell out, insomnia, aches and pains, chronic backache, swelling body, just felt like i was being poisoned, like i was dying, i wanted to die, i was suicidal. Mine was anxiety, then hair loss, to knitters, blurred vision, hip pain. Tonight is. Head pains, fatigue, memory loss, feeling like i was dying. I had dry eyes, very painful, blurry vision, visual field defects, oesophageal ulcer, allergic inflammation of the oesophagus, alcohol intolerance and a rash on my back. Are really wideranging symptoms, and you are all convinced linked to the Breast Implants . Yeah. Were any of you want at all that there may be issues arising . Not at all. 0k, there may be issues arising . Not at all. Ok, lets hear your individual stories. Michelle, isaid all. Ok, lets hear your individual stories. Michelle, i said youre implants were taken out ten days ago, and we were watching naomi in oui ago, and we were watching naomi in our report, and she said, i am alive after the surgery to remove the implants, you said, i know that feeling. I do. I felt implants, you said, i know that feeling. Ido. Ifelt euphoric, implants, you said, i know that feeling. I do. Ifelt euphoric, i absolutely did, because the night before, i couldnt stop crying, because everything had culminated to this point, and i had to come off my medication that was helping me get through life, because you cant be on medication for the operation, and my husband had to virtually carry me through the hospital doors to get into the room for the operation, and waking up afterwards, it was just, into the room for the operation, and waking up afterwards, it wasjust, i just felt wonderful. So immediately . I still have healing to do, myjoint pain is there, butjust waking up, being able to take the deep breath, iam sure being able to take the deep breath, i am sure the other ladies will ee, i am sure the other ladies will agree, just amazing. Was at the same for you . I flew to holland to have mine taken out, and i actually felt, well, i was surprised i woke up, actually, i didnt want to, because i was that ill, i couldnt carry on feeling so dreadfully unwell and not being believed, because i had to literally do my own research and be my own doctor, my own counsellor through this, and i removed my implants over two years ago now, and lam about implants over two years ago now, and i am about 85 sound better, i still get Breast Implant illness flare ups, i still, you know, i have got awful memories of being so ill and literally disabled, being made very vulnerable, and i had a pre existing autoimmune disease, i had underactive thyroid diagnosed six months prior, sol had underactive thyroid diagnosed six months prior, so i kept blaming all my symptoms are not. And obviously the stresses of life, but i felt i was being poisoned, and obviously, well, it took me six months to digest the information after finding these groups on facebook with women also experience in this, and it was the light bulb moment are just reassured me that i had no option, i had to have them removed. What was the situation for you, sarah . You had three sets of implants over 30 years, and i know that throughout most of that period, your health was suffering. At least 20 years, i think it all started when i had my first rupture. I was pregnant on my second child, and the doctor said, oh, it pregnant on my second child, and the doctorsaid, oh, it isjust pregnant on my second child, and the doctor said, oh, it isjust because you are pregnant, and it was solid, andi you are pregnant, and it was solid, and i kept going back to the doctor with pains, and she said, oh, it will be fine once you give birth. Gave birth, i thought i had Chronic Fatigue for two years. Eventually, my son was about eight months, i thought, i need to. So you had an implant rupture, you had another one put in because no one made the connection that might be causing the issues, so you went through that cycle three times . Yeah, and in about 12 years later, i noticed the same thing was happening again, but i was sick, i had all the symptoms, but i was putting it down to just being a mum, working full time, you know, busy life, running my own business, i thought it was that, so i was detoxing all the time. So when the implants were finally out after 30 years, did you feel. . The implants were finally out after 30 years, did you feel. . It was not immediate, because i didnt get off the sofa for ten days after explant, i off the sofa for ten days after expla nt, i was off the sofa for ten days after explant, i was very sick, i really thought i was going to die, and it was really slow, but i came through after a year, i started to get my health back, but i have an autoimmune disease now, and i blame the implants for that. Kate, you are saving to get your implants removed. Yeah. What is it like for you . I blamed it for my lifestyle, like i may be over did it, maybe i have drunk too much, wasnt eating enough, and sol drunk too much, wasnt eating enough, and so i have changed my life style enough, and so i have changed my lifestyle and retired from competing, trying to get healthy and eat more, but nothing would have changed. So i have been feeling poorly for three and a half years now, really, with Chronic Fatigue and feeling very poorly, all of the symptoms that we mentioned. And somewhere i stumbled on Breast Implant illness, and itjust hit home. That was your light bulb moment, as we have heard. Home. That was your light bulb moment, as we have heardlj home. That was your light bulb moment, as we have heard. I think, thatis moment, as we have heard. I think, that is made, then i have looked into what can be done about it, because then several trips to your gp all those years, and they found nothing, like i didnt have abnormal kidney or liver tests, or something would come up not normal, but it still wouldnt be, like, you know, is significant into your diagnosis of anything at all. So they repeated the blood tests and i was back to normal. But you are obviously convinced, as the others are, that it is down to the implants. When you think you will get them out . Hopefully october. You were actually a gp, and you were experiencing this, and we are hearing from these women going to their gp, trying to find out what was going on, nothing showing up, so i suppose you see it from both perspectives. How do you feel when you hear them and you know your own experiences too . Yes, when i listen to them, i was drawn to the Facebook Group and experienced it myself, so i 100 believe in Breast Implant illness. I shied away from silicone, in the 1990s nobody wanted to silicone implants, so i started my first implant in 1996, sawyer, that was approved, but it ruptured on both sides, it was withdrawn, i tried something else, that was approved, then it was withdrawn three years later, so then i tried pip, likea three years later, so then i tried pip, like a guinea pig for the pharmaceutical companies. Then pip was withdrawn, then textured silicone, that was my worst nightmare, six years, the january 2018 out of the blue i started to have symptoms. I didnt know anything about Breast Implant illness, so in that whole year i kept being referred to the hospital, different departments, whether gi, cardiology, lower gi different departments, whether gi, cardiology, lower g for colonoscopy, and nobody licked it up. And colonoscopy, and nobody licked it up. And i didnt link it up, i thought maybe it is menopause, i have no idea what was going on until in november i read an article about Breast Implant illness, joined the group, so everybody was having similar symptoms. But what was amazing was, on explant, on explant i looked at the rash that had been on my back. And we have got a picture of the rash you had prior to the implants coming out. It was 11 months, i tried to steroid creams, antifungal creams, antibiotics everything, and it was his persistent rush over the right side, andi persistent rush over the right side, and i had a rupture on that side that was diagnosed by ultrasound, but when i woke up, in the hospital, it was gone. How can it go that way . So we are hearing all of these examples, naveen, all of the symptoms disappearing when the implants come out, but still doubt that this exists. I have to say, i dont doubt anything that all of you have described, or the lady in the piece described being real, because who am piece described being real, because who am i to believe or not believe anything that anyone tells me part of being a good doctor is. I dont know why they will make them feel better, but i believe that, 0k, by doing this, i am helping them, and if you turn it on its head, if someone if you turn it on its head, if someone is saying, having implants is making me feel bad, and having them removed will make me feel better, again, who am i too doubt it . Itake issue better, again, who am i too doubt it . I take issue with the doctor who said, ido it . I take issue with the doctor who said, i do not think it is a thing. I hear what you are saying that you ta ke i hear what you are saying that you take it at face value, what your patients say to in terms of a belief in something for which there is no Scientific Evidence currently, where do you stand . At the moment, i would like to see some evidence, because i am a doctor, a scientist, igoby because i am a doctor, a scientist, i go by evidence and Scientific Evidence and statistical evidence, i guess. I havent seen that at the moment, but that doesnt mean to say that it isnt out there. Sorry, so therefore do you think that anybody that goes forward for a Breast Implant should now be made aware of these potential concerns . Yes, absolutely. We talked a lot about risks, and my consultation for breast augmentation takes longer than the actual surgery takes, you know, it takes 45 minutes to an hour to do an operation for breast augmentation, and the consultation takes longer now, one of the longest consultations that i hold for any private cosmetic surgery. And you talk through these issues . private cosmetic surgery. And you talk through these issues . I do, it is relatively recent, a few years ago we started talking about alcl, a rare form of cancer that is associated with Breast Implants, and we are very open about that, although it is a condition we do not well understand. More recently, we are trying to be upfront and say, look, this is something we have had reports of, i have had patients who, like all of you, have described that they do not feel right, i have removed the implants and they feel better. Some have had me take the scar off, they have paid for the scar off, they have paid for the scar tissue to be removed, and she swore she felt much better. So loads of people are getting in touch while we are talking and an anonymous text says, i suffered from Breast Implant illness, thyroid tolerance delayed issues, and i couldnt work with the issues, and i couldnt work with the issues that i had. After discovering a Facebook Group, i had them removed, my me is gone, i have started training to be masters swim again, the illness is real. Melanie says, have Breast Implant illness, i have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and arthritis, im struggling to get doctors to recognise my Breast Implant illness. They made me lifetime guarantees and said they were 100 sign site. They give warnings but dont insist on checking you in year. Said they we re checking you in year. Said they were 100 safe. People deserve more respect. And i willjust read in a few more, catherine on e mail, after my first implants were replaced by the same surgeon in london, i now have a diagnosis of graves disease, hyperthyroidism, which i will have for the rest of my life, and i never made this connection until today on the victoria show. So people are listening, people who still havent heard of it, what to think . What would you like to happen . When i went to see a Plastic Surgeon to ta ke went to see a Plastic Surgeon to take my implants out, to do my explant, i take my implants out, to do my expla nt, i actually take my implants out, to do my explant, i actually said to him, do you still put implants in . And he said, yes you still put implants in . And he said, yes i do, and i said why, when you can see women like myself coming to you and having to pay, i paid £9,000 to have my implants taken out, you do not do that because you wa nt to out, you do not do that because you want to be part of a gang, you know, pa rt want to be part of a gang, you know, part of a make believe group, and he said, there are good reasons, people have mastectomies and want reconstruction, and i totally understand that, but what i would like to see is people being given that informed, you know, being given enough facts to make an informed decision. Because, as we have heard, more than decision. Because, as we have heard, more than 1 million decision. Because, as we have heard, more than million Breast Implants, the majority of people do not have issues, and if they had all been told at the beginning something negative when you have, for whatever reason, wanted the implants, you might not have. The only risk i was told was that they could go hard. I was told they were safe and would last forever. Where are these studies proving that they are ok . There are loads of studies showing that they do cause issues, you know, the manufacturers are allowed to do their own studies, and they werent accountable, they were supposed to be accountable to the fda, and they want. We are just led to believe they are ok. Thank god for these support groups, i wouldnt be here, i dont think, i wouldnt be here. Because you are banging your head against a brick wall . Being poisoned at the end of the day, two plastic bags on top of your thymus, your heart, your lungs, microscopically leaking, their contents, and they do, i had gel bleed, and that is obviously why i wasnt well. Do you all wish you hadnt had them because of what has happened . That if you can think back to the reasons for why you did it, if it had been put to you as part of a bigger conversation, you know, this is a potential issue at the number of people who experience it is many to come up with any of you have still decided to go ahead . Know why. No. I was told they were really safe and ifi i was told they were really safe and if i known there was a link to cancer, i would if i known there was a link to cancer, iwould never if i known there was a link to cancer, i would never have had them done, ever. What im saying, people need to be aware of what they can cause and then its their decision. We are out of time, great to have you all in. I hope your continuing recovery is good. Thank you for your comments, keep them coming in, well try to read out more later. A few minutes ago are the latest pictures of indias second attempt to send a spacecraft to the moon. It comes a week after a fuel leak forced the launch to be postponed. Thousands gathered at the Satish Dhawan space centre at sriharikota, an island off the coast of southern Andhra Pradesh state. If successful, the chandrayaan two will become the first to land on the south pole of the moon. By the end of this week there will be a new Prime Minister in 10 downing street, a new leader of the liberal democrats, and the labour leader may have faced a no confidence vote in the house of lords. And this morning foreign officejunior minister alan duncan has quit. Its going to be quite a week in politics norman smith is with us to talk us through what we can expect in the tumulutous week ahead. Alan duncan has gone, norman, what else is going on . Its busy, busy, busy, busy, alan duncan has already quit, saying i cannot put up with alan Boris Johnson, quit, saying i cannot put up with alan borisjohnson, i do not want to leave the eu without a deal, im out of here. What else is happening . For pm we will get the result of the ballot to choose a new liberal democrat leader, it could bejoe swinson, it could be ed davey, signs are itll be a close race. 5pm we will get the close of pallets for the tory leadership. The four weak leadership contest will come to a close, we wont actually get the result until tomorrow morning. 12 noon tomorrow mrs may s farewell, herfinal minister noon tomorrow mrs may s farewell, her final minister questions in the house of commons, then she will go to Buckingham Palace and tender her resignation. Later tomorrow afternoon im guessing around 5pm outside downing street we will get the new Prime Minister setting out his vision for the future, most likely of course, that its going to be borisjohnson. Likely of course, that its going to be Boris Johnson. I likely of course, that its going to be borisjohnson. I do apologise, its wednesday, im getting confused with all the dates. On thursday, we will have the parliamentary recess which means basically mps head off for the long slow summer but for borisjohnson, if for the long slow summer but for Boris Johnson, if it for the long slow summer but for borisjohnson, if it is Boris Johnson who is Prime Minister, he will have to get down to the hard business not just of will have to get down to the hard business notjust of forming a new government, but trying to break the brexit deadlock. All the signs are from team johnson, their game brexit deadlock. All the signs are from teamjohnson, their game plan is to massively ramp up no deal planning so they are talking about a huge Public Information campaign to advise and alert businesses, ordinary folk about how they might prepare for no deal and the thinking here is mrs may never really did that. In fact, here is mrs may never really did that. Infact, it here is mrs may never really did that. In fact, it now appears she didnt even threaten to leave without a deal. Team johnson think if they go into these negotiations deadly serious and the eu are convinced we are ready and willing to leave without an agreement they may be prepared to strike a deal, albeit we know when you look at someone albeit we know when you look at someone like sir alan duncan resigning this morning, the chancellor Philip Hammond saying he will go, another cabinet minister and others saying they will go, already building on the tory backbenchesis already building on the tory backbenches is the borisjohnson opposition, opposed to his premiership and to no deal. We face a ferocious parliamentary tussle when mps come back after the summer recess. Norman, thank you. Weve not even talked about whats going on with the labour party. Piers are expected to meet to discuss something as symbolic vote of no confidence inJeremy Corbyn. Lady hayter lost her job after she likened his handling of allegations of anti semitism in the party to the bunker mentality of adolf hitler in his final days. Labours leadership said her remarks had been contemptible and deeply offensive. Joining me now is lord desai he signed a letter that was published in the guardian which says Jeremy Corbyn is presiding over the most shaming period in labours history. Also with me is lord adonis a prominent anti Brexit Campaigner and former transport minister. He didnt sign the letter but has been critical of the way the party has handled antisemitism. We asked to speak to a member of the shadow cabinet too but no one was available this morning. Welcomed both of you. Do you think you should be a vote of no confidence inJeremy Corbyn this week . We are profoundly unhappy with the way this has been handled. You can get someone with Greater Service to the labour party than diane hayter. This is no way to conduct the affairs of a great party and i can tell you the labour party in the house of lords is very unhappy and we are mystified really, how can this sort of standard of peru behaviour be allowed to continue . Its not what we expect in a country like ours and im afraid it typifies what is happening in brexit britain. Its being discussed today by labour peers, would you support a vote of no confidence in jeremy peers, would you support a vote of no confidence inJeremy Corbyn . Peers, would you support a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn . will be very much guided by the discussion, but i dont like making a futile gesture is, theres no point. It would be a strong gesture. Thats the issue to be discussed, whether it can be a strong gesture. Why do you think it would be futile . There are 150 labour peers, 300,000 labour Party Members in the situation we are in which i think is really serious for our democracy, is now a serious breach between the labour party in parliament notjust in the house of lords but also the house of commons. And labour members in the country. There was a survey in the country. There was a survey in the Times Newspaper this morning that showed labour members in the country are also becoming very unhappy with the way the Party Leadership is dealing with anti semitism and brexit. But the only way because of the peculiar changes weve made to the constitution which means the leadership is entirely chosen by activists, activists move we cant change the leadership. activists, activists move we cant change the leadership. I hear what youre saying about your caveats around not wanting to do something thatis around not wanting to do something that is futile but it sounds like you are deeply unhappy and therefore if you think its going to make a difference, im assuming you will go ahead and support this vote of no confidence . If the general will of the labour peers is that the way we should stand up for diane hayter and make clear what is your will, what would you like if you were guiding everyone . The vote of no confidence . Do i have confidence in the labour Party Leadership at the moment . No. Ican the labour Party Leadership at the moment . No. I can be quite open. Is ita moment . No. I can be quite open. Is it a sensible step for us to start taking, making big declarations and all that . Im not sure yet is the a nswer all that . Im not sure yet is the answer because as i all that . Im not sure yet is the answer because as i say, the way weve changed our own constitution asa weve changed our own constitution as a party, its actually the Party Activists who decide what happens in the leadership, we dont have any power over this. Do you want a vote of no confidence . I most probably will. Im saying i probably will. It is very likely we may not put a no confidence motion. Things are moving fast. We may do more on diane hayter, her being defended and some peers dont want if there was a vote for no confidence in the leadership, i would say i have no confidence in the leadership. That does not constitutionally have any meaning whatsoever but it is a gesture, it is a declaration by me personally. That i am very unhappy with the way the labour party is going on. For you, youre both linking to what happened with baroness hayter and her being sacked after describing whats going on around the Party Leadership is being bunker mentality. Is that the Tipping Point for you, is that the anti semitism Tipping Point for you, is that the antisemitism it happened much before diane hayter was sacked. Ive been feeling very uncomfortable for a very long time about anti semitism. And i said that in our peers meeting in the labour party about a year ago. Although i am not of jewish party about a year ago. Although i am not ofjewish ethnicity, i belong toa am not ofjewish ethnicity, i belong to a minority and if i did not belong to a minority i am unhappy about the sort of racism and i think this has no place in the labour party. Today, yesterday, Jeremy Corbyn wrote to labour Party Members saying a section of the Party Website is now hosting educational material and he wants everyone to go on their and look at what should be done, but the approach should be. He himself has said hatred towards jewish people is rising in many parts of the world, our party is not immune from that poison and we must try that out from our movement. While other Political Parties and some of the media exaggerate and distort the scale of the problem in our party we must face up to the unsettling truth that a small number of labour members hold anti semitic views and a larger number dont recognise anti semitic stereotypes and conspiracy theories. He says the evidence is clear enough, the worst cases of anti semitism in our party have included holocaust denial, crudejewish have included holocaust denial, crude jewish bankers have included holocaust denial, crudejewish bankers stereotypes, conspiracy theories, blaming israel for 9 11, i could go on, im reading out a lot but i want to say hes put out a lot but i want to say hes put out the strong statement, he says ive learnt so much, i hope you will too so that together we can fight these evils. Can i say, that statement is quite unsatisfactory because what he says is those people who have been criticising the handling of anti semitism inside the party have exaggerated, that is in the statement, people have exaggerated and in particular at the very good bbc documentary that was done two weeks ago where Party Staffers whod been in charge of dealing with these cases had made clear her position had been undermined. For you, that sentence undermines everything else. What we should be as a party a zero tolerance of anti semitism, this is back to the 1930s, the stuff which led to the undermining of european and civilised values, there is no place for it all, its not been exaggerated, there is anti semitism inside the labour party, some of the people very close to our leader are clearly anti semitic and needs to be driven up completely. clearly anti semitic and needs to be driven up completely. I hear exactly what youre saying about the language but what about what is being done now and him saying, you know, he says there has been a problem and hes learned a lot. Could things change under his leadership . Let me put it this way. The speed with which diane hayter was sacked as lacking in the speed with which we fight anti semitism. Chris williamson could have been sacked on the spot without anything, he was not sacked. But you know, this website and all that is too late. Ina this website and all that is too late. In a sense, a lot of people whojoined the late. In a sense, a lot of people who joined the labour late. In a sense, a lot of people whojoined the labour party late. In a sense, a lot of people who joined the labour party know for anti semitism comes from. And i think its too late now for the leadership to start pontificating about what a terrible thing anti semitism is. They have not done anything to eliminate it, despite being told again and again that it is going on. So do you both expected to bea is going on. So do you both expected to be a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn this week . to be a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn this week . I genuinely dont we havent yet met as a group of colleagues to discuss it, there is huge unhappiness at the way diane been treated and as you heard, she was sacked without being told in a matter of minutes, the steep and reprehensible cases of anti semitism month after month is passing and they are not being tackled. We cannot continue as a party on this basis, we have the equalities and Human Rights Commission in a totally unprecedented action investigating the labour party as a party. For anti semitism. All i can say is after whats been happening in recent weeks i hope that investigation is thorough and is completed quickly because i think there could be significant repercussions from it. there could be significant repercussions from it. I am personally ashamed. And i have been for some time now. And its very difficult to hang on in the party which is so badly behaved. Might you leave the party . Well, you know, ive been in the party for 48 years. And you know, its a deep commitment on my part. I tried very hard to do what i can. And i think it will be very difficult to leave but i think. It very difficult to leave but i think it sounds like youve thought about it. We may be sacked for having appeared on your programme, that would solve my problem having appeared on your programme, that would solve my problem i may be expelled. Lets be clear, we are staying in the party, its our party, the anti semites should be leaving the party not good decent social democrats, youve been in the party for almost 50 years, ive been in itfor party for almost 50 years, ive been in it for almost 30, we stand for true democratic social values and look at the brexit mess we are in at the moment, we practically have no government at the moment, we are committing going over the edge of a cliff as a country, so the more important that sensible, decent Labour Party People stick with the party and our voices heard. Thank you both so much for coming in. Thank you. Now, as we speak, the Prime Minister theresa may is chairing a meeting of the governments emergency committee, cobra, to decide how to deal with the seizure of a British Oil Tanker by iran. Troops from the Iranian Revolutionary guard got on board the ship on friday the foreign minister in the capital, tehran, had said it was violating International Maritime rules. The foreign secretary, jeremy hunt, is expected to push for a global diplomatic response instead of immediate sanctions. Lets talk now to our chief international correspondent, lyse doucet. Good morning and thanks forjoining us. What might those measures look like . There are measures of symbol and measures of substance. They can look for some kind of sanctions but of course, with the us policy of maximum economic pressure on iran, iran is almost sanctioned out. They could look for ones of substance, the most dramatic would be to cut off diplomatic ties. It looks like britain wants to avoid that and it looks, as you just mentioned, they are looking for more regional diplomatic response. The kind of response they chose after the poisoning here in britain, of the skripals. Take us back, its a situation that has been escalating quickly, how did we get here . Theres been tension in the persian gulf for some time, you can sate the tension started to slowly ratchet up ever since United States unilaterally pulled out of the iran nuclear last year. But for the tensions really started to spike was after a new round of us sanctions, which basically cut off a lot of the avenues for iran to sell its oil. This is the red line. If it doesnt have its oil it isnt able to run its country. So therefore end of april early may then we started first of on the tankers in may, attacks on the the tankers injune, and now we have the seizure of this british flagged tanker in response, in retaliation, iran confirms, for britains seizure in earlyjuly of the straits of gibraltar. The difference with this, iran could deny the other attacks saying it wasnt us, it wasnt revolutionary guard which carried out the attack on the tankers in this crucial waterway, now it cant it, it is posting that it has taken this tanker. It allowed press tv onto the ship over the weekend. It pulled down the british flag, hosted an iranian flag and it has now said its investigation into what it sees as piracy will take a month which is exactly the amount of time the authorities in gibraltar have said they will continue to hold the iranian tanker. How many are on the tanker, whats happening . We understand there is about 23 crew members on the tanker. Indians, russians, latvian, no british nationals, no oil on the tanker. Which is leading some observers, if we can look at it in this way, iran s responses are carefully calibrated. They dont want to go beyond a red line which could provoke a military escalation which nobody wants including iran. But iran has all kinds of pink lines, if you like, it knows it has the ability in the persian gulf to poke and provoke, what it wants to do is remind the world that if they are inflicting pain on iran and not allowing it to sell its oil iran can do the same to others as well. Thank you very much. In the past six years the private Security Company g4s has made more than 14 Million Pounds profit from running an Immigration Removal Centre. Thats despite an undercover investigation by the bbcs Panorama Programme in 2017 showing detainees at brook house near Gatwick Airport being verbally and physically abused by some of its employees. After this footage came to light 21 members of staff either resigned or were sacked. At the time the Home Office Said it would monitor the company more closely and review its contract with them. Now, a report by the National Audit office, commissoned by mps has criticised the way the home office managed the g4s contract. It found that 84 incidents of abuse indentified in panoramas footage didnt amount to a breach of the contract and didnt lead to significant penalties nathan ward was a senior manager at brook house for four years. He quit hisjob and became a priest after he says his employers ignored his concerns about the way the Immigration Removal Centre was being run. The immigration removal thanks the immigration removal for joining thanks the immigration removalforjoining us. Tell us you experience thanks forjoining us. Tell us your experience of working there. worked in brighouse and tinsley has for the period you said and i think its important for people to understand these are complex and challenging environments for people to work in. With complex needs within the people that live there. But the issue for me was that actually the system wasnt actually set up to support and look after those people in a decent and humane way. And the way g4s operated also was counter to that as well and thats why in the end, i thought the only thing i could do was leave. What has come out today from the National Audit office is concerns around the contracts, around the profits that g4s was making at a time of criticism about what was going on, that panorama footage that we we re going on, that panorama footage that we were talking about. And questions about the contracts themselves, at the time of the panorama investigation the Home Office Said it would look at the contract with g4s it would look at the contract with 645 to it would look at the contract with g4s to try to stop failure is, in other words have something of a lever against g4s. But its been criticised today for how the contracts are being run. Whats your view . I think the main thing for me is what the report today which we welcome it says is that 20p in every pound spent of taxpayer money was actually profit for g4s, but it also saysis actually profit for g4s, but it also says is that the spending on staff training went up after panorama which means that to be fair, g4s must have known they were cutting corners before that time and thirdly, the home office has finally admitted that the contract they have with 645 admitted that the contract they have with g4s is not fit for purpose and what i would say in response to that is that actually the whole immigration detention system that we have at the moment is not fit for purpose. In this report supports that further. I mean come on that matter that you mentioned, training went up, profits then went down because more money was being spent on training. In your experience, what was said to staff around these issues of training and what was inappropriate and what was right . Well, people were having to not undertake training because the numbers of staff were short on the floor. So when you are working long hours, initially the contract for staff was 48 hours, throughout the week, they are tired, inexperienced and undertrained. What do we expect asa and undertrained. What do we expect as a society when we put those things in place with some challenging and Vulnerable People . So now the contracts are being looked at again and its so now the contracts are being looked at again and its expected any new contract would include Performance Measures to cover all of these training issues and also there should be a contractual role for the home office to monitor the appropriateness of the use of force against detainees and the care staff. Do you feel the spotlight is being properly shown . To be fair, theres two things to point out i think in relationship to that. Within the existing contract when i was working there if there was a substantiated complaint that would actually be a performance measure so we are seeing in this report, the home office havent taken the issues raised by panorama as complaints. Wheat was always told if a detainee makes a complaint whether its written or verbal, we should be the ones that fill out the forms so its clear today and evident but neither g4s nor the home office have followed their Complaints Procedures in relationship to panorama. And secondly, within the contract, there is an overarching requirement for the contract in this case, the contractor, g4s, to look for savings within the operation of the contract and declare those to the authority and declare those to the authority and there spot called a cost sharing initiative where they divide the savings between the authorities and the contractor. So therefore, to say that they are making 20 profit, actually, they should be declaring that as cost savings because go on. Nathan, we are out of time but thank you so much forjoining us. A Home Office Spokesperson said the events at brook house highlighted by panorama were shocking, and from the very beginning we have been absolutely committed to understanding all aspects of what happened and embedding learning we are making significant changes to the contracting model and have developed new ways to further ensure that the safety and dignity of those detained are at the heart of what we expect from the provider, including having more staff dedicated to monitoring the performance of our service provider. The home office and g4s have been working together and we remain some breaking news in the last few minutes nearly 70,000 volvo cars in the uk are being recalled over a fire risk related to an engine problem, the manufacturer has said. Thats all we have at the moment. We will keep you and updated and that throughout the day. England has won bronze in the netball world cup, after beating south africa 58 42 in liverpool. The roses narrowly missed out on a place in the final, beaten in the semis by the eventual winners, new zealand. Lets have a look at the last few moments of the match that clinched third place. South africa, they have had an amazing netball world cup. They are going to finish in fourth. In 2023, the world cup goes to cape town. Five, four, three, two, one but the buzzer goes, Tracey Neville wins a bronze medalfor the england roses here in liverpool in 2019. Its another bronze medal for the england roses, theyll finish in third, south africa will finish in fourth. Thats the performance the england fans wanted after yesterday, thats the performance that everybody involved with england wanted. They win the bronze medal 58 42. Lets talk to england roses most capped player and team vice captain, jade clark. Welcome and good to have you on the programme. How are you feeling today . Iamso i am so proud of the way we lost the semifinal but the way we were able to turn around in 24 hours, it felt like the whole country was behind us, everyone got involved, sending us, everyone got involved, sending us messages of support and that bronze medal match was like nothing ive ever felt, that wave of support, amazing experience. The bark was so high, the expectations so high after that commonwealth gold last year. Did you feel the pressure . We didnt feel it is pressure, we saw it as a huge opportunity, notjust pressure, we saw it as a huge opportunity, not just to pressure, we saw it as a huge opportunity, notjust to get the gold but to leave a legacy, to get eve ryo ne gold but to leave a legacy, to get everyone in the country playing. We couldnt get the double gold we wa nted couldnt get the double gold we wanted but we got everyone out playing, everyone watching nipple which is something we can be proud of. Change ahead, Tracey Neville standing down after four years on thejob, how are standing down after four years on the job, how are you feeling about that . Happy that we could send her out on a high, i played with tracy when i started playing and shes gone from that to my coach, she is processed through and through and i think even though she wont be coaching us for the next few years she will be back and hopefully we will see her back with england nipple in some capacity. Its a little while to go until the next major international, 2022, the Commonwealth Games in birmingham. Are you hoping to play in that . Yes, ive always said i didnt want to know when my last game would be, if that was my last game for england thanit that was my last game for england than it would be an amazing man but yeah, not making any decisions just yet, want to keep soaking in the atmosphere for the next couple of weeks and enjoying what happened. Said obviously about the huge level of support theres been and growing grass roots playing of netball. With that next international event, sometime of right now, is there any danger of the momentum stopping because particularly after what happened last summer, its really building . I think with womens sport right across the board that momentum is going and we want to keep that going, weve got super league, that will start next year, so yeah, all the england girls will be out pushing the sport further and we just hope the support continues in the media. We love seeing all the matches covered on tv and its been in the papers so i really hope it continues. Its great to talk to you, congratulations and thank you very much.
