Of politics and public debate here and abroad. The us house of representatives votes to condemn President Donald Trump for racist comments aimed at four congresswomen. And in the netball world cup, england look set for the semi finals after defeating trinidad and tobago 72 46. Hello, good afternoon. Its 5pm our top story. The younger brother of the Manchester Arena suicide bomber has been extradited to the uk to face murder charges. Hashem abedi was arrested in libya shortly after his brother salman abedi blew himself up in a suicide attack. 22 people died in the bombing, and a total of 112 needed hospital treatment after the attack, which happened at an Ariana Grande concert on the 22nd of may 2017. Both brothers travelled to libya in april, before salman abedi returned alone. Hashem is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court. Speaking after her last major speech as Prime Minister, theresa may paid tribute to the victims of the attack. The attack that took place in the Manchester Arena was an appalling attack, a senseless attack, and this is clearly an important moment in the investigation. I hope it is a welcome step for the loved ones of all of the victims, those people who have commanded themselves with such dignity through what has been a deeply distressing and difficult time for them, and conducted themselves with that dignity as they search for justice. I want to thank all of those who have worked so hard to come to this point, and no doubt will continue to work hard. I think what we all now need to see is to see that all involved in this case are able to see that case progress and that case brought to the courts. 0ur correspondent fiona trott is outside the headquarters of Greater Manchester police for us. Fiona, Senior Officers have been speaking about this. What have they been saying . They have outlined the charges that he will face in court, but of course what we know is that this has taken over two years to get to this stage. Hashem abedi was arrested shortly after the Manchester Attack after his brother, salman abedi, detonated at device and killed over 20 people, the youngest of which was eight years old. In august of that year, three months later, the crown positives crown persecution service. Of course come in the extradition process is a lengthy one. 0nly course come in the extradition process is a lengthy one. Only now, today, Greater Manchester police today, Greater Manchester police today confirmed that he 22 year old was brought back to the uk by British Police officers and the chief constable in is explained the charges he will face the chief constable, ian hopkins. Greater Manchester Police officers have arrested hashem abedi for murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life. He will be transferred to a custody facility in london. Previously, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge of hashem abedi in respect of the murder of 22 victims. The attempted murder of persons other than the 22 deceased victims, and conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life. After processing at the police station, he will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in relation to those charges. Of course, this is a very important day for the families affected by the Manchester Arena attack. They were told first by the police today and they were the people, the people the chief constable spoke about at the very beauty of this News Conference this afternoon. They can now see that the criminal process is moving along. That in turn will affect the inquest of course, following todays news, we have heard they were now be another pre inquest hearing injuly. The inquest may be not expected to ta ke the inquest may be not expected to take place, the full inquest, until 2020. Theres also been a statement from the mayor of manchester, any burnham. He says this, it is right and proper the people affected will be able to see a process on british soil. We commit to sort them in every possible way on the difficult road that lies ahead. Today is an important day in the Recovery Process for our city. And hashem abedi is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court later. Fiona, thank you. Correspondent fiona trott there. In her last speech as Prime Minister, theresa may has warned that british political discourse is being driven down the wrong path. Speaking at Chatham House in london, mrs may said there had been a coarsening of debate which could be pushing the country to a much darker place. Her speech this afternoon came ahead of the final hustings between the two candidates vying to replace her as leader of the tory party and Prime Minister. Mrs may warned that we cannot take our values for granted. Both domestically and internationally, in substance and in tone, im worried about the state of politics. That worry stems from a conviction that the values on which all of our successes have been founded cannot be taken for granted. They may look to us as old as the hills, we might think they will always be there, but establishing the superiority of those values over the alternatives was the hard work of centuries of sacrifice. And to ensure that liberal inheritance can endure for generations to come, we today have a responsibility to be active in conserving it. If we do not, we will all pay the price rich and poor, strong and weak, powerful and powerless. 0ur Political Correspondent iain watson is in east london, where the final hustings of the conservative leaderhip contest take place shortly. First of all, those comments by mrs may in this final big speech, how would you sum them up . How would you assess them . I think what was interesting about that final big steve don final final big speech, notjust journalist but those intervals with politics nationally and internationally, putting on the heavy political artillery. She refused to say who she was really aiming her weaponry at, who was in her sights. And i think she left us to fill in the blanks but here are a few big clues. She talked about age of absolutism, people putting forward arguments based not on hard fa cts. Forward arguments based not on hard facts. She also talked about active solutions than just to adopt populist policies. Given we are having the last hustings in the conservative leadership election here, it is not hard to imagine she could be aiming those words at her successois, saying could be aiming those words at her successors, saying they will effectively cut taxation when they ta ke effectively cut taxation when they take over but keep the public finances on course and insisting they can leave the European Union by 0ctober they can leave the European Union by october 31 without a deal, and that the cons consists wont be perhaps as great as theresa may believes it would be, because she was so singing that final speech it was important there was some kind of compromise on brexit. And her wider argument was that politicians across the board should fight for Common Ground and copper mines. Ifollow should fight for Common Ground and copper mines. I follow compromise. I think internationally, she was talking about rules based order. There was curtis is in there of positions taken by b Vladimir Putin and donald trump. What is important about her final speech was that she wanted to justify what she had done in power as well, sure she talked time and again about how she tried to bring about change for people who were perhaps struggling. In the audience, talking about, youve talked about this geopolitical environment, this difficult political environment, but you are partly responsible for it the go home vans, citizens of nowhere. She said she was always trying to achieve a consensus. She was trained to leave that behind with a parting shot to her successors, notjust to surrender to populism but to think of Actual Solutions they wouldnt lament if in power. Her to potential successois, lament if in power. Her to potential successors, jeremy hunt and boris johnson, or taking part successors, jeremy hunt and boris johnson, ortaking part in successors, jeremy hunt and boris johnson, or taking part in the final hustings where you are. Is it the case, do you think, the fact she has called for copper mines is going to be heated by either of them . Called for compromise. If anything, on brexit, they have hardened their positions. That is right. This is not so much a meeting of minds but their positions coming closer as they appeal, in the last few days, to the conservative members who have yet cast their vote. Theresa mays successof yet cast their vote. Theresa mays successor will be announced on tuesday next week, take over in a weeks time, so i imagine most people are made up their minds but it is interesting that on brexit, both of them are effectively saying the same things and there is a risk, as theresa may would say an Philip Hammond would say today, that a notable brexit becomes former likely. A no deal brexit. They are projecting each otherfrom cou nterattacks are projecting each otherfrom counterattacks to some extent, but i think what is interesting is the final hustings the 16th hustings, it will take place in this vast arena. This is usually where boxing matches ta ke this is usually where boxing matches take place, but usually the opponents are in the ring at the same time. Here, we will have both of them making their pitches once again separately to conservative members, question separately by deacons of the neck members, not having a go at each other. Questions happily by conservative members. They will. Questions happily by conservative members. They will. Rather than have a complete go at each other, and in that sense, compromise but i think the two are far apart. Many thanks. 0ur correspondent iain watson there. Now, some news to bring about our top story, the news that the brother of the Manchester Arena bomber salman abedi, hashem abedi, has been extruded from libya and arrested here in the uk. A short while ago, the mayor of manchester, andy burnham, gave this reaction to that news. Today is an important day for oui news. Today is an important day for our city and the recovery progress thats its going through, and the attack on the Manchester Arena was an appalling act and many people suffered consequences of every it everything will day. It is right and proper that those people affected will now see a judicial process on british soil. Today, we are thinking of the families and everyone affected, and we create recommit in manchester to support them every saturday. The fact that it has finally arrived is down to the determination of Greater Manchester police. I would particularly like to think the security minister, ben wallace, for his ongoing support to this whole process , his ongoing support to this whole process, but also to pay tribute to oui process, but also to pay tribute to our chief constable, ian hopkins, and all of his team for the exam flurry work with which theyve handled this compact process. Exemplary work. That is the mayor of manchester, andy burnham, reacting to the news of the arrest of hashem abedi. We are expecting to hear from the home secretary, sajid javid. The us house of representatives has voted to condemn President Trump as racist, after he told four democratic congresswomen to go back to the countries they came from. Every democrat in the house supported the symbolic resolution, which said the president had legitimised hatred but only four republicans backed it. Three of the congresswomen involved were born in america the fourth is a us citizen. 0ur north america correspondent david willis reports. These comments from the white house are disgraceful and disgusting and these comments are racist. A row that started in cyberspace became all the more human, not to mention personal, on the floor of the nations capital. President trump urged these four congresswomen of colour, vocal critics of his administration, to go back to where they came from. They should love our country. They shouldnt hate our country. You look at what theyve said. I have clips right here. The most vile, horrible statements about our country, about israel, about others. Its up to them they can do what they want. They can leave, they can stay, but they should love our country. America has always been about the triumph of people who fight for everyone versus those who want to preserve rights for just a select few. And there is no bottom to the barrel of vitriol that will be used and weaponised to stifle those who want to advance rights for all people in the united states. Republicans sought to have Nancy Pelosis racist accusations struck from the record. Can i ask her words be taken down . I make a point of order that the gentlewomans words are unparliamentary and ask for them to be taken down. The ill tempered partisan brawling that ensued proved too much for the acting house chairman. We want to just fight. I abandon the chair. The house voted to allow nancy pelosi to call the president a racist and lawmakers lined up to tell of the effect racism had had on them. I know racism when i see it. I know racism when i feel it. And at the highest level of government, there is no room for racism. And make no mistake, when people tell me to go back to where i came from, that is a racist insult, because thats based on race i am a proud naturalised citizen, born in india, a proud patriot, a proud person who belongs in this country and its not the first time ive heard, go back to your country, but it is the first time i have heard it coming from the white house. The president has said he does not have a racist bone in his body. But in a virtually unprecedented move, the house voted nonetheless to condemn his original tweet. Yet far from settling the matter, the debate served to underline how combustible as an issue race has become in 21st century america. David willis, bbc news, washington. Lets get more on this now with Professor Larry sabato, whos an american political analyst. Professor sabato is the professor of politics at the university of virginia, where he is also the founder and director of the centre for politics. Thank you so much forjoining us here on bbc news, professor. This is an rendering situation, isnt it . Grace is always one of the fault lines of american politics, but for her to come to the fore with this ferocity, does it surprise you . Not during the trump presidency. Nothing surprise me during the trump presidency. But the condemnation of the president in either house of congasis the president in either house of congas is extremely red. 0ver the president in either house of congas is extremely red. Over 100 congas is extremely red. 0ver100 yea rs congas is extremely red. 0ver100 years ago, president William Howard taft. The effect is not as clear as one might think. Almost no one privately says that President Trump has not used racist terms or racially sensitive terms, depending on which party you are in, but it helps him in some ways, her seven others, but overall, i think hes very pleased with the reaction, believe it or not. It has strengthened him with republicans, conservatives and the source of almost all of his votes, whites. Has there been recent polling on this . Its been going on for a few days. Just expand a bit. Yes, im referring to that private. The latest public poll, trumps support among republicans and conservatives has intensified because of this controversy. Will that have increased enough to make an appreciable difference with a view to the election next year . Thats a great question, of course. The election is next year. Its a year and a half away for we forget about things rather quickly because there are 70 controversies, but that is the key. This is not an isolated event. President trump has used race decades before he was ever in politics, and throughout his presidency. And he has done it so frequently that i think he is conditioned his supporters to expected, and every time he does it, his support does intensify. Candy Democrats Use that, use the way in which he uses race, to their own advantage . They have heard used it to advantage and one key way. The democrats, as they are wants to do, have been fracturing and arguing among themselves and splitting into factions. This actually has helped unite them. The moderates and the liberals in the left wing of the party joined together to condemn President Trump and to support the four Congress Women who, in particular, were attacked by trump. That is a plus for them. And it also increases their support among the 30 of the american electorate that are members of minority groups. But, again, 70 of American Voters are white, so what Democrats Gain among minorities may be two stomach too outclassed by what republicans gain from whites. And. Are there any practical outcomes from this compline, condemnation, and doesnt feed into any this talk of impeachment . The condemnation itself has no consequent is, although it has political consequences, and these temporary ones, for both sides. What a thing is interesting is that this is actually released some of the stea m is actually released some of the steam in the volcano that has been building among democrats to impeach President Trump stopped youre going to hear about an effort today and tomorrow to push this to the floor, and it may or may not get to the floor, but its not going to happen because the leadership of the Democrat Party understands they dont have votes, probably not in the house and certainly not any sadness, where 60 stomach the Democratic Party understands they dont have the vote, probably not in the house and certainty not in the senate. It would probably backfire on the democrats. We are going to have to leave it there. Professor sabato, have to leave it there. Professor sa bato, thanks for talking have to leave it there. Professor sabato, thanks for talking to us. Things very much. Time for a look at the headlines here on bbc news. This week, weve been hearing the remarkable story of safa and marwa twins bornjoined at the head and how they were separated at great 0rmond street hospital. Such cases are incredibly rare, but the surgeons performed a similar separation eight years ago, on twins rital and ritaj. Theyve been to see the family in ireland for the First Time Since those girls left hospital, to see what life is like for them now and what the future may perhaps hold for safa and marwa. 0ur medical correspondent fergus walsh reports. Hi quite a moment. Im good. The twins ritaj and rital meeting the surgeons who separated them eight years ago. How are you . Born in sudan, they now live in ireland, where their fathers a doctor. Its hard to imagine they were once joined at the head. Doctors feared the girls might die unless separated, so like safa and marwa the division was performed over several stages. And this was rital and ritaj just one month after surgery. Each parent able to hold a child in their arms. I hope that they will get a normal life and be treated as normal human beings. Which one are you . You get it right every time so what do they think now . We are sitting here with two healthy twins, just like what i hoped at that time, so its a great moment in my life. The dream came true . Exactly, yeah. Im very proud dad now. Laughter that was very hard time. And at the same time, it was happy time because of the conclusion. We just get our girls, everyone is separated and can live her own life. And now, enas is pregnant again. One child this time . Yeah. Laughter. I think itsjust amazing to see, yeah, how theyve come on and grown into happy children. Itsjust wonderful, really. Rital has some learning difficulties, but the long term outcome of the twins separation has been hailed as a major success. The surgeons believe its because it was done in the first year of life, when the brain and body have the strongest ability to heal. What we put the two kids through, and the brains through, is a lot. And the younger brains and their younger circulations are better adapted and have better regeneration potential, so to do the surgery early does make a difference, we feel. Everything is easier. A one year olds regenerative capacity is so much better. The skin heals better, it stretches better, the bone grows in better. Ready, steady, go theyve set up a charity so that funds are available to allow Early Intervention in future cases, and to further research. Safa and marwa were two when they were separated. The delay was due to problems finding a charitable donor. The surgeons say the girls would have done better if theyd operated earlier. Theyre clearly going to face some challenges, but i think overall, its a positive outcome for them. Theyre going to need support, but they have a chance of leading a happy life. No one can be sure what the long term outcome will be for safa and marwa, but the experience of rital and ritaj shows just what is possible. Sisters bornjoined at the head, now able to lead independent lives. Fergus walsh, bbc news. And you can see a special programme about safa and marwa this weekend on the bbc news channel. Many thanks. Theresa may has made her last major speech as Prime Minister, calling for an end to what she calls uncompromising absolutism in politics. She says public debate at home and abroad has become coarse and adversarial, often leading to hatred and prejudice. Shes due to stand down next week after three years in the job. The two leadership contenders borisjohnson and jeremy hunt will take part in the final hustings tonight. With me now is tim montgomerie, conservative writer and founder of website conservative home. Thank you for coming in. You listened to the speech. What did you think . Somewhat disappointing, im afraid. Everything she said, i agreed with, describing the anger that we often see on social media, the sense of exclusion. A lot of people have that from politics. But it was as if she hadnt been by minister for the last three years. This is the sort of speech i could have expected from her three years ago. In fact we heard that speech on the steps of downing street at that time. What i thought was missing was a sense of self reflection, a sense of having been at the heart of power, at the heart of the government machine. What she had wrestled with, what she couldnt overcome, how she would have done things differently, it was just something of a nonevent, i thought, for me, and i thought it was a missed opportunity. You made very clear that her biggest regret was not being able to deliver brexit. Surely talking about the merits of compromise, thats what she meant, she meant she couldnt deliver brexit, or she meant that because people wouldnt compromise. A lot of people wouldnt compromise. A lot of people wouldnt compromise. A lot of people would say they did compromise. I think a lot of brexiteers would say they did compromise on things like the divorce payment. The idea we would pay nearly £40 billion for the price of leaving the eu would have appalled many people. People would say they compromised. Whether they compromised enough, she probably has something of a point. I did not particularly approve of her Withdrawal Agreement she negotiated Withdrawal Agreement she negotiated with brussels, but i thought it was better to have that and leave the eu than be in the mess we are in now. I think she failed ever really to persuade the public that the deal she made was a realistic or good compromise. And im afraid thats still in her rhetoric, still in her speech today, we saw a lack of persuasion, a lack of leadership, of giving the country hope, and a sense that she was taking britain in the right direction. What about her comments about the coarsening of political debate . She did not make clear who she was talking about. Probably the american president. Chuckles well, yes. I think thats whats likely frustrates people about theresa may. We know she was talking about donald trump. Every commentator has deduced that, it seems. But she kind of never quite connects with people in a way where she levels frankly. Because she is too cautious . Perhaps. Her nickname has been the the maybot. I think she would have got more affection from the british people in the conservative party if she had let off stea m conservative party if she had let off steam a little bit, said what she thought about some of her collea g u es she thought about some of her colleagues inside and outside of the conservative party. She talked about President Trump in a more direct way. He might have respected her a little bit more, as well, and fought back, and they might have had a more honest relationship. But she was far too much, i think of a diplomat in a period where people wanted plain speaking. And a period after the eu referendum. People, of course, voted to leave the eu, but they voted for change, as well. All of those voters who had never voted previously, who came out in the eu referendum, particularly from the labour heartland, they were saying to the government they wanted things to change. And they appointed somebody like Philip Hammond as chancellor. Right from the oft she was complicating that it was going to be a pretty, steady, unchanging status quo regime, and im afraid thats partly why the her premiership failed. You are underwhelmed by the speech. But do you detect in anything she said the sort of stance she might take in a few days time when she becomes the former Prime Minister . We are all waiting for that. Lots of your colleagues were tempting her in their questions to make a comment on borisjohnson or jeremy hunts plans. She isnt doing that now but that might change. 0ne thing that could be said about theresa may, she has loved the conservative party, she has grown up in it throughout her life. She doesnt want to be a person who undermines the new Prime Minister before theyve even started. I dont expect she will be a ted heath type character who famously was known as the sole car on the backbenches. I think she will want the conservative party to succeed. The great sulker. She will be reluctant to criticise the new Prime Minister directly, unless she feels her legacy is in great danger. I think it would be wise for her to take a period of diplomatic silence. After just telling you i think she should be more of a straight talker chuckles you are having it both ways perhaps. But i think giving the new Prime Minister a honeymoon period, if they possibly could get one they deserve, and not being undermining of him, thatll be quite important. Yet it could be that whoever succeeds her takes the country into a no deal brexit, which she is com pletely a no deal brexit, which she is completely opposed to. She is, but we all remember that she was quite clear that if britain couldnt get a deal that was satisfactory, no deal was better than a bad deal. She distanced herself from that eventually. She did, but it was the policy position she stood on at the last general election. She cannot distance herself from it completely. And even if she stays silent i think the current chancellor of the exchequer, soon to be the former, Philip Hammond, he certainly will not hold back in criticising that position. The one thing the Prime Minister the Prime Ministers about to change, but the tories have the majority, and it only takes a couple of mps to wipe out that majority, and i feel one couple of mps to wipe out that majority, and ifeel one of couple of mps to wipe out that majority, and i feel one of them might be the current chancellor of the exchequer, Philip Hammond, causing difficulty for the next occu pa nt of causing difficulty for the next occupant of ten downing st. A bbc investigation has found the National Crime agency failed to arrest a paedophile for 18 months after receiving an initial tip off about him. The nca was warned about matthew bell in september 2016, but didnt arrest him until march of 2018. During that time, bell continued to direct the sexual abuse of children in the philippines. The nca said there wasnt enough evidence to arrest him when they were first contacted. Daybreak, a tower block near glasgow. Behind the door, matthew bell, a sex offender, on his hard drive evidence of child abuse. Matthew bell has now pleaded guilty to five offences. Hell be sentenced later this month. But weve uncovered serious concerns about the way British Police handled the case. Here is matthew bell on his youtube channel. Here he is again, in the same room, directing the sexual abuse of an 11 Year Old Girl in philippines, using skype and a webcam. And this is the man who actually witnessed it and took that picture of matthew bell, investigative journalist peter dupont from belgium. And the little girl on the bed. What sexual act to do. He infiltrated a gang, Live Streaming the sexual abuse of children, and stumbled across a skype session with matthew bell in charge. That was one of the most gruesome things. He was enjoying it very much. The journalist told police in the philippines and was there filming when five men were arrested, and 12 children rescued. But he wanted matthew bell behind bars, too, and set out to contact the Child Protection unit of britains National Crime agency. In july 2016, dupont contacts the Regional Office in thailand, no response. In september, with help from interpol, dupont is put in touch with a office in london, sending screenshots of matthew bell and his skype id. Dupont is even interviewed by the daily mail, which publishes matthew bells picture. Interviews and phone calls continue but no action is taken. Matthew bell remains free and Court Documents show he was still abusing children. In early 2018, we travelled to meet dupont in belgium, and we asked why nothing has been done. Matthew bell is arrested one month later. Nothing has been done. Matthew bell is arrested one month latenm nothing has been done. Matthew bell is arrested one month later. It is very strange. Maybe they had other priorities. At the same time, it isa priorities. At the same time, it is a huge shame. And it is negligence. The nca insist Child Protection is its top priority. In a statement it said i think this is incredibly disturbing. To have delays in a case like this which is so serious with such a vile crime against children is really worrying. So i think we have to know from the police what went wrong in this individual case, but also what are the wider problem is that they are facing. Because ive been concerned for many years that there are just not enough resources going into this, given the scale of the escalating problem that we face. Matthew bell is now behind bars, but questions remain for the nca, why did it take so long to catch him, and how many children we re catch him, and how many children were left at risk . People who are victims of Domestic Violence in rural areas sufferfor longer, and struggle to get support. A study by the National Rural Crime Network has found that people whove been abused often feel isolated and have fewer means of escape. Frankie mccamley reports. Making the idyllic move to the beautiful countryside to enjoy a quiet life. For some, though, this isolation is used as a way to control and abuse. Sarah, not her real name, was in a controlling relationship for years, living in a Rural Community made her feel like she couldnt ask for help. Ifeel like a prisoner, and living so far away in the middle of nowhere its dark, and its quiet, and you havent got people around you. Like many abusers come her ex was manipulative rather than physical, which is harder to prove in court. Ive always said, in some ways, if hed punched me in the face and emptied my bank account id have a physical track and trace of what hes done to me. And i dont have that. Ive just got years of absolute hell and anxiety and feelings i cant explain to anybody because no one can understand what ive been living with. She managed to access help, but finding it wasnt easy. I was scared to go to the gp, because the gp, the receptionist, everyone in there knows you, or know somebody to do with you, and i dont want my life out there. But that could change. This is the first time that anybody has looked at Domestic Abuse specifically through the lens of rurality. A Research Project has found victims of rural Domestic Abuse are half as likely to report it and the abuse goes on significantly longer than urban areas. Weve had very clear examples of an entire community that had been roped into the abuse by the abuser, and so when the police knocked on the door of potential witnesses, they are always on the side of the abuser, and not the abused. This research is just a starting point to find out how common this crime is in the countryside. But the bigger challenge is going to be changing some of those entrenched views that protect the perpetrator rather than the victim. The research will be discussed in Parliament Later today in the hope of protecting those victims hidden by isolation. Frankie mccamley, bbc news, north yorkshire. House prices in london have fallen at their fastest pace since the financial crash a decade ago. New figures from the office for National Statistics show that while average prices across the uk are still rising, prices in the capital were 4. 4 lower in may than a year earlier. 0ur economics correspondent andy verity reports. Over the whole of the uk, on average, house prices are still rising, even at a slower rate of four of 1. 2 . In the year to may the average price rose by £2000 to 229,000 according to the land registry. House prices have been doing that for a decade, becoming less and less affordable and forcing young families to live in rented accommodation. But in the British Housing market, london usually leads the way in booms as well as busts. Prices rise first in the capital in the boom, and when theres a downturn, they tend to fall before the rest of the country. Londons price fall of 4. 4 on average is the biggest fall since 2009 when the financial crisis was in full swing. What these figures show is that the average london home fell in price by £21,000 in the year to may. The average terraced house, that fell by about £14,000. The average semidetached by £23,000 and the average detached house by £55,000. Whats striking about the price falls is that they are taking place at a time when mortgages are much cheaper than they used to be. The house price falls acceleration within london comes down to two factors, one that is short term is uncertainty around future Household Finances and what brexit might mean. Clearly, there is that uncertainty that drags on and that becomes a realfactor in london. Secondly, long term. The house price growth we saw about 2016 meaning that in an age where mortgages are regulated, you are hit up against the limits of how much people are able to borrow and the amount of debt which they are able to get from their lender. That is set to act as a longer term drag on london house prices. The big freebie that many homeowners thought they were enjoying between 1996 and 2008 when prices trebled was often at the expense of their children and grandchildren. Borrowing very large sums to pay barely reachable prices of those who have enjoyed the decades long run up in house prices may fear a house price crash but many younger people who cant afford to own their own home would welcome it. Andy verity, bbc news. The most played song on uk radio of the 21st century has been revealed it is the snow patrol ballad chasing cars. Released in 2006, the anthem never reached number one, but did spend a total of more than two years in the top 75 singles chart. 0ur entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson has more. Well do it all everything on our own. Snow patrols chasing cars was released in 2006 and never reached higher than number six in the charts, but it returned again and again and again, appearing in the top 75 eight years in a row the bands singer, Gary Lightbody, has a theory as to why its become the most played song of the century on tv and radio. If i lay here if ijust lay here. Chasing cars, ive said it before, that it was the purest love song, mainly because most of the songs id written were more about the end of relationships, you know . Normally when youre in a relationship or youre happy, you dont think, you know what im going to do right now, im going to write a song. If i lay here if ijust lay here. A huge part of chasing cars success was the broadness of its appeal, not many tracks have ever been on heavy rotation on both indie Radio Station xfm, and the easy listening specialist, magic. Whats interesting is what this says about us as a nation. That we are pretty romantic. Its not like a brash pop song, its not a realist r b track, its this rather romantic, non ironic, beautiful love song, and i think that says quite a lot about the kind of people we are as a nation. I dont know when. And the amazing thing about the making of chasing cars, Gary Lightbody said it was the quickest song hes ever written. In fact, it was one of ten composed in a single night. And that title, well, it came from a comment made by his dad, he referred to his lovesick son as being like a dog chasing after a car. Colin patterson, bbc news.
