Explain a little background to this because it has been a long running issue, hasnt it . But as we said you are reporting a record fine will be imposed on the firm. Correct, what we reported a little while ago was that the ftc did vote and this was a long running probe about these facebook privacy missteps and with a 32 facebook privacy missteps and with a 3 2 majority, they voted to approve a roughly 5 billion settlement with facebook. So they have approved that. What do we know about the timing then because we have not heard from facebook themselves, they have been tightlipped about this. We expect this will be imposed and they will have to pay it . That is they will have to pay it . That is the big question right now, we do not know exactly when this will all be finalised but what we do know is that the matter was moved to the Us Department ofjustice of the civil division, and it is unclearfrom now how long it will take for them to finalise at this is common where the Justice Department does finalise these types of settlements. So it is not unusual that it was moved there, it is just hard to know how much time it will take. He did not know that facebook were reported will report its earnings in two weeks of that will be something that people are looking for clarity on as well. Certainly when we Start Talking about the numbers, rough estimate in terms of how significant this fine is, one third facebooks profit . 5 billion may sound like a lot but in the scheme of things some are saying perhaps it should be higher. Definitely something to keep in mind, 5 billion is definitely not pennies but when you are talking about a tech giant as big as facebook, this is not something that will crumble the company. I used to cover the Banking Industry and it was similar, these large billions of dollars in fines would sound like huge numbers but really, the companies could quite easily go on from there. In fact, facebooks stock price rose after the article came out which meant the market saw it as came out which meant the market saw itasa came out which meant the market saw it as a good sign and was able to get this settlement and perhaps move on. Even though there are a number of other investigations and probes ongoing. I wanted to ask you about that, we were looking at pictures of mark zuckerberg, talking about privacy being key and putting it front and centre in their response but i wonder whether this fine also comes now with new regulation on these social media firms to get their house in order. And they could be more worried about that rather than the scale of the fine. Indeed, there is somewhat of a spotlight on regulation of Large Us Technology companies right now. The us broke the article that the department of justice is investigating google over anti trust and we know that the ftc, the same regulator that is now enforcing and likely to impose this 5 billion settlement on facebook, also has its sights on amazon and the department ofjustice could have its side on apple so this is a time right now when it is long awaited, when large Us Tech Companies that do not have quite the amount of regulation as any other big industry and have continued to balloon in their growth are finally now facing this reckoning with a large amount of regulators looking to impose more rules. It is expected to make landfall in louisiana later this morning, early afternoon for us, morning in the United States. It is a significant storm. From as early as wednesday it was giving flooding in new orleans. They are expecting 600 millimetres default in the next four or five days on top of what has already fallen, not just days on top of what has already fallen, notjust for days on top of what has already fallen, not just for louisiana. There is a chance it could strengthen to Hurricane Force before it makes landfall. The storm surge is something that is concerning along the gulf of mexico coastline, inundated with those waters being pushed on shore by the strengthening winds, currently sustained around 65 mph. If it reaches hurricane strength, it is borderline, then as winds are up. Potentially some damaging winds as well. It is one we are keeping a close eye on. Back to you. So we have two cops, adam driver and bill murray, who are driving around centerville which is a real nice place. Then they start to think Something Weird is happening, there are news stories about the world being knocked off its axis by polar fracking. Daylight ending when it shouldnt do. By the time they get to to the station, things are going severely wrong and the dead are coming back to life and walk on the earth, not to the delight of everybody. Guys. Shouldnt we be telling each other that its all going to be ok . Like this will all go away like a bad dream . Ronnie . Gee, wendy, im not sure i can say that. Cliff . Please . You might see it as a sister picture to only lovers left alive. The weirdest thing about it is that it takes a lot of tropes from george romeros zombie movies, particularly the dead trilogy. Which i know you watch on hard rotation. Each of which are about a specific thing, dawn of the dead is about consumerism. The sort of is seems to be saying, we are all consumers, and what we are looking for is wi fi, zombies Walking Around looking for wi fi. In passing, it is funny up to a point. There is also a fourth wall breaking device, there is a song by sturgill simpson, it is on the carved and bill murray and adam driver says it is the theme song. And also how do you know this is going to happen . Well, we have seen the script. There is a weird fourth wall breaking. You think it is handily going to do something really interesting and magical and itjust doesnt. Every now and then, it cuts back to tom waits who plays this sort of wild man and lives in the words and quotes henman melville. And does a lot of being tom waits with hair. Tom waits is that the only impression i can do. I wanted more. I think there are individual funny and quirky moments but itjust felt like yeah. It seems to me like youre saying it doesnt quite hold together. Like the zombies, it doesnt go anywhere itjust wibbles around and then falls over. Wibble i love that lets move to the second film, which i havent seen, but i like the premise. Kumail nanjiani and Dave Bautista in a comedy. I think Kumail Nanjiani is really funny, he is an assuming uber driver. Dave bautista is a Law Enforcement agent, who due to a complicated plot contrivance, there is a bad guy he has been trying to get for ages. He has a laser surgery, therefore he cant see. He knows where the bad quy cant see. He knows where the bad guy will be. He has to get an uber driver to help him. So they are thrown together like a sort of odd couple buddy cop movie. I think Kumail Nanjianis always funny, he does get the maximum laughs. He isjust a driver driving an electric car. The problem is, it is not really enough for the film. Also they have a brilliant martial a rts also they have a brilliant martial arts performer who is never really given the chance to shine. So in the end it comes down to whether you find Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista sparking off each other. Dave bautista plays the whole thing like a short sighted bear with a sore head, which is a joke that lasts around 15 20 minutes. Afterwards it starts to kind of. Again, a talent that i wanted more. I will confess that i did laugh four or five times and all of those laughs were because ijust find Kumail Nanjiani just funny. Number three is a documentary but this has a regular cinema release . Yes, documentaries are now a very important part of cinema. This is directed by alison klayman, it is a documentary about steve bannon. For complicated reasons and is now going around the world trying to drum up support for his populist nationalist movement. In doing so, we see him, inserting with a rogues gallery of people, people with links to far right groups, on the other hand, opportunist millionaires and nigel farage. If youre interested, what i like to do is set up something and ill fund it somehow and i think youre the perfect guy. We help knit together this populist nationalist movement throughout the world. Because guys in egypt are coming to me, the modi guys in india, duerte. You know, and we get orban, and. We are somehow some sort of convening authority for conferences and stuff like that so we get ideas out. I mean, you think thats a worthwhile thing . Yeah. Nobodys got it, nobody is doing it right now. Its not being done. The reason that we are going to beat corbyn and sanders is theyre not prepared to take on any powers that be. Were fire breathers, i mean, were taking on the establishment every day. Youve taken on at the tory party, im taking on the republican party. They dont have that. And thats why we can steal a march on them. And the reason they dont want to do it its immigration. As long as they dont take on. Theyjust refuse to take on immigration, were prepared to take it on. Yes. Its a global revolt. Were fire breathers and were taking this on. The thing is, the documentary doesnt interrogate them at all, it is a fly on the wall documentary. It is like spending time in his mind. The film maker had very good access. Yeah, great access. In a way, it is left to journalists who we see actually challenging bannon. Great interventions from paul of the guardian and others who do actively challenge him, talking about charlottesville, affiliations to people who are appallingly racist and have extremist views. Those sections remind you the importance of good journalism, ofjournalists who are willing to raise the hard questions, willing to integrate and ask things that are difficult. Do you really need to be interested in the minutiae of us politics to enjoy it as a film . Enjoy is a strange word because i found it very hard company to be in. I respect the film makers decision to literally stand back and let people have their say. Give them enough rope, let them say what they want. Obviously, there are moments in the documentary which do cause an intake of breath in which people say things which are quite outrageous but the documentary is very keen to just stand back and say, judge it yourself. Which i did. Anyone who follows you on twitter can imagine how you judged it. Lets talk about best of the week. This film hasnt been a wide release, it is never look away. I think it is a very smart film. It is a film about ways of seeing, talking about complicated ideas but wrapped up in melodramas. What is interesting about it, on the one hand, it is a very mainstream and accessible film of a love story. And a mystery. On the other hand, it is a film which is asking about the ways in which artists can look at things like looking at them from the side. Sometimes you can only look at something by looking away. Its three hours long but it flew by. Im terrible with long films but i thought it absolutely flew by. All right. And dvd . Yes, the documentary about Neil Armstrong is coming up next week. We are at the anniversary of the moon landings, we have seen a lot of films about it recently. The fact of the matter is that it is such an astonishing story. This documentary is his life story, before and after the mission. It is all fascinating. Every single time, i am astonished at what was achieved when people work together, what you can actually do. At the centre of it is this very enigmatic character who was never very emotional in public but did something extraordinary. Fantastic. And grab thank you very much. See you next week. Well right now the winds are at 65 miles an hourgoing right now the winds are at 65 miles an hour going throughout the south of the city. The hurricane or Tropical Storm actually right now is starting to go south west of the city and the problem is as it goes in it brings potential floodwaters into new orleans. So there has not been a Mass Evacuation and people are of course been told to prepare for this and for the rising waters. What kind of things are people doing . We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. So said president John F Kennedy in 1962. On july the 16th, 1969, three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, edwin buzz aldrin, and michael collins, made ready to fulfil that promise as they prepared for apollo 11. The First Crewed Mission to land on the moon. Three men to represent the culmination of a dream. Here at nasa in houston, texas, Mission Control monitored every aspect of the moon shot. These days its used to monitor the International Space station, the actual control room used for the apollo 11 mission is undergoing a bit of a refurb in honour of the 50th anniversary. Marcos flores is one of the current Mission Controllers for the iss. There was no guarantee that apollo 11 was going to be successful. I mean, it was really cutting edge, dangerous stuff, wasnt it . Yeah, definitely. There was a lot of risk involved in the missions themselves and how dangerous they were, but also a lot of unknowns in terms of being able to successfully land on the moon. The 36 storey tall saturn v moves out of its Huge Assembly building and heads for the launchpad. To build the launch vehicle, nasa contracted boeing, north american aviation, the douglas aircraft company, and ibm to help build a rocket that would end up being the biggest and most powerful ever built. Call that a rocket . This is a rocket. Inside here is the saturn v rocket. Stage 1 gets you off the launchpad and up to a speed of 6000 mph. Two and a half minutes later all of this fuel is burnt. You dont want to carry an empty casing into space so you ditch it to save on weight. Then five rocket engines in stage 2 ignite and send you into the upper atmosphere. At 115 miles up all that fuel is gone, too. You ditch the second stage. And this rocket on stage 3 fires you around the earth and into orbit. Then it powers down and, a little while later, it restarts. This time it sends you to the moon. So heres the thing. That bit there. Thats where the people sit. All the rest of it is fuel. Laughter. So lets head to the front of the International Space station. Thats not something you get to say every day. A recent poll suggests that one in six britons believe the moon landing was staged. In the age of the internet, conspiracy theories run rampant, and claiming the moon landings were a hoax is at the head of the pack. Oh, radiation, thats the other one. There is no way they could have gone through the deadly van allen belt that surrounds planet earth. Theres the anomalies with the photographs, all of which are ridiculous. Stanley kubrick directed it in a film set in area 51, somewhere in the desert. The technology to fake the moon landings did not exist in 1969. The technology did exist to get to the moon in 1969 just. Radio three feet down, 2. 5, picking up some dust. Big shadow, its different but its very pretty out here. The lunar surface cameras were based on our 500 el systems. We had many modifications. The viewfinders, and the mirror system, all of this was removed to save weight, which then locked into a chest bracket on the astronauts suit. And it was literally moving their body, tilting their body, to frame up the images. You cant see any stars because the contrast range of the surface images is too high. If its a bright day and you stand outside a house and open the door to the house and look in, you cant see any of the detail because its too bright where you are. So this is as close as a modern equivalent as we would have. It has a 100 megapixel sensor. If we took it to the surface today would not be able to capture stars and lunar surface detail in the same image. Radio oh gee, thats great. Is the lighting here decent . One of the issues of doing it in a studio is the dust on the moon. And when there is no atmosphere, dust behaves differently to when there atmosphere. So now you would have to have a studio that you evacuated and had a vacuum in. The Lunar Mission comes as a climax of the space race that the United States and soviet union have been competing in since the mid 1950s for technological and scientific supremacy. The soviets possessed advanced tracking capabilities of their own, and have used them to track icbm missiles as well as spaceflight. So their inability to detect a conspiracy of this nature seems unlikely. Moreover, they would have had every incentive to expose this in order to score a major propaganda victory. Apollo engineers were very well aware of the van allen belt. A, it wasnt in them for very long, and b, it charted a course actually where the van allen belt it is quite weak anyway. You would think that having moon rocks on the earth would be living proof that the conspiracy theories can be debunked. Those rocks are still being studied today. Some of them are sealed up, never yet been touched, because the scientists, even back in the 60s in the 70s, knew that technology would get better with time and they would be able to make new scientific discoveries. We have, left by the apollo astronauts on the moon, retro reflectors, these are passive experiments, where, a bit like cats eyes, we can fire a laser at them. Bounce lasers from the earth to the moon to understand the changing behaviours of the moon and its orbit. It is sadly not enough for the deniers, they will always see conspiracy. While conspiracies have been around for decades, they certainly have a new lease on life in the age of the internet. Things like facebook groups, let all these disparate ideas where people come together and find each other in a way we have never had before. So the romans had conspiracy theories, theyjust didnt have the internet. Now we still have conspiracy theories, because we are humans and our brains are fallible, and we have the internet, its a perfect storm. That is it for the short short cut of click.
