More than 20 allegations. Waterspouts and flooding in Louisiana Residents of new orleans are urged to leave the city or take shelter as a powerful Tropical Storm bears down on the coast. And englands commonwealth champion netballers start their World Cup Campaign tonight with a match against uganda in liverpool. Good morning. Welcome to bbc newsroom live. Im Rachel Schofield the American Military says its trying to put together a coalition to protect commercial shipping in the gulf after the royal navy had to intervene to help a british tanker which was being confronted by iranian vessels. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt has promised to reverse cuts to the size of the royal navy if he becomes Prime Minister. Rising tensions with iran have led to uk merchant vessels being placed on the highest security alert near the strait of hormuz. ani on one side are the arab states including a number of key allies. On the other iran. Between them the strait of hormuz at its narrowest point its only 21 miles across. But in total, a fifth of the worlds oil exports are squeezed through this tiny corridor. So any disruption there affects Global Oil Supplies and as a result prices. Heres our north america correspondent peter bowes. The plan is to put together a coalition of nations providing military escorts to commercial shipping in the gulf. The us navys fifth fleet said it was working closely with the royal navy as well as regional and Global Partners to preserve and defend the freedom of navigation. On wednesday, three iranian boats tried to block a british flagged tanker passing through the strait of hormuz. Donald trumps nomination to become chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, the most senior officer in the us armed forces, said the intention was to move quickly with a joint effort. Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle and a norm for the international order, it has been in place for seven decades and we have a crucial role to enforce that norm. So what were trying to do with the coalition to put that together in terms of providing military naval escort to commercial shipping may be an important factor and i think that will develop over the next few weeks. The tension with iran has risen because of crippling economic sanctions which donald trump imposed on the country after the us pulled out of the deal to prevent tehran from building a nuclear weapon. Like the United States, britain and france both maintain a constant naval presence in the gulf. Neither country has confirmed it is discussing plans to form a coalition with the us to escort tankers. Our Diplomatic Correspondent Jonathan Marcus is here. A lot being made of this idea of a coalition the us military might put together. It is not a new idea . Coalition the us military might put together. It is not a new idea7m is not a new idea. The americans have been trying to get support for this in the last few weeks or so. It is clearly, given the incident involving the isle of man flag tanker, there is clearly a problem that needs to be addressed. A number of countries including britain do have naval forces in the of countries including britain do have navalforces in the region. There is a genuine concern, certainly in london and shared elsewhere, that nobody wants to escalate tension. Ramming and loads more warships could escalate tension. It has to be set against the risks to maritime traffic. The other difficulty here is a wider one, which is the row between iran and america over the nuclear deal. The reason there is no take up is that many countries feel the americans, american headliners hardliners are as bad as iranian headliners hardliners. They do not want to get involved in a time when a real shooting war could break out between the United States and iran. It is that contest which makes it difficult but is there a need for Merchant Shipping to be defended . Evidently clearly there is. What is perhaps the middle way if people are not willing to form some coalition, some formal coalition in that way . One factor is many have warships in the region already. Is there enough to protect the various tankers, no there is not. That is a difficulty. It depends on what the wider problem over this Nuclear Agreement plays out. The suggestion is strongly that it is the iranians who were behind this most recent approach to the isle of mann flagged tanker. The americans think it was the iranians who wanted to blow up a number of other vessels over recent weeks. On the iranians side that raising the pressure, hoping to bring more pressure, hoping to bring more pressure on the europeans, to relieve economic sanctions that they are suffering from. That is probably are suffering from. That is probably a mistake view because i do not think the europeans can do anything much to relieve that pressure. So this is the conundrum, do you assume that things will get worse and put in more navalforces, perhaps again escalating, or do you try some out to calm things down, bearing in mind that it looks as though the iranians on one hand i going to carry on provocations and the americans are absolutely not going to relieve the economic pressure on tehran. Big geopolitical discussions going on but in the meantime there are british vessels going through their which will be concerned about their safety. What do we know about what advice they are getting and what support . The advice is to stay out of iranian waters. You showed in the lovely map, this is a very narrow waterway. Shipping channels are clearly marked. It is really rather. It is not the wide open ocean, there are limited places you can actually sale. It is hugely congested. So it is a problem. As i say there are some warships on the sea. There be diplomatic efforts to try and de escalate. Many gulf states will be sending signals to the iranians by various means. The iranians will be sending signals back. It is a concern. The last time this happened in the 1980s was in a different context when there was an organised system of protection. That was a war between iran and iraq when tankers were being attacked as collateral damage. In some cases quite deliberately. Today, the row is between one of the protectors, or there would be protectors, america and iran. So it is a different context and iran. So it is a different co ntext a nd and iran. So it is a different context and the stakes because of the economic sanctions on iraq are heavier. On orion. On iran. The home secretary, sajid javid, has given his backing to the police in their trials of facial recognition software, which is designed to help spot suspects in public places. Mrjavid was speaking at the launch of new Computer Technology which makes use of Artificial Intelligence to speed up analysis of child abuse images. Our home affairs correspondent, danny shaw, reports. A unique glimpse inside scotland ya rds digital investigation department. This is where computers, smartphones and memory sticks are brought for analysis to provide evidence in the most complex crimes. These components are being repaired in the electronics lab. They are from a phone seized during a murder enquiry. Scientists can restore phones thrown into water, set on fire or stamped on. But its painstaking work and there are lengthy delays. The problem for police is that there are so many devices, its taking too long to gather all the evidence, around four months on average. So new techniques are being introduced to speed up the process. So i have started off and it should find something relatively quickly. There you go. A match in seconds. The new technology, shown to the home secretary, will help police scan for images of child abuse. Itll take 30 minutes to examine a hard drive, compared to 2a hours now. It should also make it easier to identify victims. You could describe it as a game changer in that it means that more of the victims will be protected. But also, just as importantly, more of these vile paedophiles will be caught and taken through the courts and this will be presented as evidence and i hope more will be locked up behind bars where they belong. Another benefit is that investigators wont have to spend so long looking at images of abuse because Artificial Intelligence would do it for them. Controversially, ai is also being used to help police spot suspects in public places. The technology is called facial recognition and the home secretary said police had his backing to try it out. Turkey has taken delivery of a Russian Missile defence system, which the United States had repeatedly warned against. The first part of the s 400 arrived in ankara on friday morning. The us said the shield would compromise nato, of which turkey is a crucial member, and warned ankara of consequences if it went ahead. Our turkey correspondent mark lowen joins me now from istanbul. A fairly tense situation . Yes. More than tense. It plunges turkeys relationship with the us and nato potentially to a new low. The us had warned turkey repeatedly not to buy our elderly from its archrival, russia. Artillery from the uss archrival. 5 400, the first parts of which have been arriving in ankara. The president has said they are free to pick their own artillery. The problem for nato is that Russian Military equipment here would potentially compromise natos own equipment. We have had a statement from nato saying we are concerned about the potential consequences of tu rkeys about the potential consequences of turkeys decision to buy these missiles. It has warned it will be expeued missiles. It has warned it will be expelled from a programme. It would lead to economic sanctions now it is engaged in Missile Defence deal with russia. What are your thoughts on how this will play out, there is a lot of anger and hostility . The turkish government is still hoping that president trumbull intervened to block any sanctions. The president of turkey appealed to him earlier this month. The turkish government have put all their chips on President Trump. The problem as far as jack is concerned, the us congress believe that sanctions need to be applied. Sanctions have been a key pa rt to be applied. Sanctions have been a key part of the tram white houses armoury against other countries, china and iran. So they need to be tough with turkey to maintain that and if sanctions are applied, it could really hurt the turkish economy at a time when turkey is facing huge economic problems. And the president is not a man who likes to give ground when he feels pressure from outside. A real rift could develop between turkey and the us, turkey and nato. Turkey is natos hugely important member in the southern flank. It could have serious consequences. Thank you very much indeed. Theresa may has said that whoever succeeds her as Prime Minister must be more interested in Public Service than power. She made the comments in an interview with the daily mail as the final two contenders, Boris Johnson and jeremy hunt, prepare to set out their stalls in interviews with the Bbcs Andrew Neil in a special bbc programme tonight. The postal ballot for conservative Party Members will close in ten days. Our Political Correspondent chris masonjoins us from westminster. The Prime Minister speaking in su btle the Prime Minister speaking in subtle tones but people are interpreting what she meant. Yes, morning to you. Subtle tones but you can read firmly distinctly between the lines. The merest hint of who she might be referring to. Let me show you the key quote from this interview in the daily mail this morning. She says too many people in politics think being Prime Minister isa politics think being Prime Minister is a position of power. Actually it is a position of power. Actually it isa is a position of power. Actually it is a position of power. Actually it is a position of power. Actually it is a position of service to the country, all too many those who see it as country, all too many those who see itasa country, all too many those who see it as a position of power see it as it as a position of power see it as it being about themselves and not the people that they are serving. So i think you do not need to be a cluedo king or poirot tojoin i think you do not need to be a cluedo king or poirot to join the dots and think that might be a reference to the former foreign secretary rather than the current one. She also sends geed off about the promises we have had from the various candidates all sing we can go back to brussels and get a better dealfrom the eu and go back to brussels and get a better deal from the eu and then go back to brussels and get a better dealfrom the eu and then hey go back to brussels and get a better deal from the eu and then hey presto we can get regular macro. She paraphrased but only madly. She has reminded them that the eu will not reopen the deal. But they certainly have not done until this point. And she also emphasises what we already know which is that she tried everything to try and get brexit delivered and her deal developed. She was willing to resign, to sit down with jeremy she was willing to resign, to sit down withjeremy corbyn and find out if labour would come on board. But none of those things work. And of course the context for this is that she is saying this, doing these valedictory interviews less than a fortnight before she leaves and right now as we talk, jeremy hunt is sitting down opposite andrew neil with nobody but the two of them in a studio for a half hour interview being recorded for broadcast tonight. A little later on Boris Johnson will do the same thing. What is fascinating about this is that they are one on one interrogations for a full hour with one of the most respected political interviewers. And for borisjohnson in particular who has not done all that much in terms of Television Debates and discussions, not as many as some people would like to have seen him to do, without a studio audience or without a contributor who is sitting ina studio without a contributor who is sitting in a studio somewhere around the uk and asking a question that perhaps a politician might be able to add a certain amount of flannel to in the answer, just andrew neil and those two candidates should be quite a watch. There will be politicians who would walk over an alpine ridge without footwear on rather than speak to andrew neil. But for these two there is no avoiding this appointment. When we were saying an error introduction, the votes have been going out and a lot of talk has been going out and a lot of talk has been going out and a lot of talk has been going around that many may have cast their votes already. So these broadcast are irrelevant. Some say that the numbers may not be quite as we thought. The expect patients was that when the ballot votes went out a week ago, the woods like they would select their vote. Team hunt have been saying that you should hold fire filling in those forms until you have seen more of both of us. Until you have seen more of both of us. Maybe they were hinting at maybe until we have both been in front of andrew neil. Most members have not filled in theirform, either they have heard the pleas from jeremy huntare have heard the pleas from jeremy hunt are more likely they have not got round to it yet and they have put the envelope down somewhere. It is further down there to do list. What it means is that there is a substantial number of conservative members who have not yet voted which adds a certain amount ofjeopardy to tonights occasions. But in all honesty given that the survey suggest that Boris Johnson honesty given that the survey suggest that borisjohnson is i million miles ahead, what happens tonight will not be sufficient to change the dial and see the whole race turned on its head but what it absolutely could do is shape how the candidates are see perceived in the future. These kind of interrogations, they have a long ha rd life interrogations, they have a long hard life these days. Stuff looks around on the internet for ever. So they could be influential even if they could be influential even if they dont shape the outcome of the contest. Indeed. Things come back to bite you, shall we say. Chris mason there. At least some of those being held are from an International Language school, education first. Police injiangsu province said all 16 foreigners had tested positive for illegal drug use. Our china correspondent Stephen Mcdonnell is following the story. Four britons were amongst 16 foreigners, or language teachers or language students, who have been netted in this drug sweep injiangsu province. Police say acting on a tip, conducted a raid and they all failed a drug test. Now that doesnt mean they had drugs on their possession. Or that they were buying or selling them. It means they had illicit substances in their bloodstream. In china, it doesnt matter if last week you might have been have been in colorado, smoking marijuana where it is completely legal. If you return to china and you fail one of these drug tests which can be completely random, it doesnt matter. Bad luck, you are busted. I have seen these drug tests take place. The police willjust go into a bar and say to everybody in there, you must give a urine sample on the spot. They hold it up to the light. If the crystals change colour, you go directly to a police van, then to a Detention Centre, which is effectively a jail, where you are held for two or three weeks, and then you are told to leave the country. You lose yourjob and you cant return to china for the next several years. And i would imagine that that is exactly what is going to happen to these four britons. There has now been a Statement Released from gibraltars chief minister, saying they have had Laboratory Testing on that cargo which has now confirmed that it was containing 2. 1 Million Barrels of light crude oil. They make the point that this was of course because they has reasonable grounds to believe that it was taking actions and because it was found to be carrying this crude oil, that would put it in the position where it was flouting those sanctions. That is the latest from the scenario in gibraltar. All of this coming against a background of this coming against a background of today, the American Military trying to put together a coalition to protect commercial shipping in the gulf after the royal navy had to intervene to help a british tanker which was being confronted by iranian vessels. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt has promised to reverse cuts to the size of the royal navy if he becomes Prime Minister. Rising tensions with iran have led to uk merchant vessels being placed on the highest security alert near the strait of hormuz. We can speak now to former nato commander and retired rear admiral chris parry. He served in the royal navy protecting shipping from iran in the 1980s. Very good idea to be with us. The talk today first and foremost of the us military trying to build a coalition to offer protection to vessels in that area, of course, not a new idea and one that seems not to beginning in attraction that the us might want . Yes but actually it is the right approach. I think when shipping is threatened like this by a rogue state or nation, it is up to the International Community to say, the International Community to say, the ocean is the Global Commons and affects all of us when you attack or threaten to attack shipping sodas entirely appropriate that you put together a coalition of all those countries that have an interest in the sea to make sure this doesnt happen. If that were to happen, what kind of military might might be brought to bear in that area . But at the heart of it, you will see american give ability based on prior grip. A lot of land based aerodromes, significant capability and also americas nato and other allies will be involved as well. Right at the heart of it will be those countries that rely on gas and oil that come from the gulf but i think all those with an interest in the sea and the way in which we use it as the engine of globalisation wa nt to it as the engine of globalisation want to contribute. I dont think you can stand aside from this because if iran get away with that, other countries in the world, particular in the south china sea, the architect, they will say, ok, we will start interfering with merchant traffic and all the supply chains that we have throughout the world suddenly starting a disrupted Service Important that iran understands it is part of the International Rules based system which needs to be upheld. He talked about the risk of disruption, what would that look like . At the moment, it is harassment, threats but i think if we go back to the 1980s, you will see boarding is and attacks by the indian revolution regard. They are at the heart of this, it is not really the rest of the indian armed forces. Extending well into the future. My own hunch is that suddenly you might actually see some sea mines deployed by the revolution regard. It also disrupt the sea lanes. What is significant is that there are lots of radars, lots of sensors in that part of the world, also batteries of service to surface missiles but that is very high end. I think you will continue to see attacks by these small craft. The dangerous thing will be if they attack in a large swarms of ten or 12 because that is quite difficult to deal with and quite difficult to identify what their intentions are. It sounds like a precarious position for companies that are trying to send ships through that area, what would your advice be for them . My advice to them with b, make sure you read properly going through the straits, stay on the money aside rather than the arena inside. Take the protection of the 19 states navy and the royal navy, that is what they are therefore, and also take good precautions for protecting your crew against a rogue tax. Already, insurance premiums have gone up for the ships going through the gulf but you can take practical measures, you can avoid those areas where there are millions might intercept you. You mentioned the protection provided by the royal navy, we heard today from jeremy hunt that he would reverse cuts to the royal navy if he became Prime Minister, making the point that perhaps give ability that we currently have is not enough. Do you welcome that announcement . Yes, of course i do but i am surprised thatjeremy hunt has not noticed thatjeremy hunt has not noticed that the royal navy has been run down for the last 15 years or so. It strikes me as being opportunist to say this at the moment when evidently with what is going on but i would welcome any post because of the end of the day, we are a maritime nation, the see of the day, we are a maritime nation, the sea is the physical equivalent to the World Wide Web and we need to be strong and see if we want to be global written. Its 80 years since the first kindertransport broughtjewish child refugees to the uk, after they were forced to flee nazi persecution. Around 10,000 children were evacuated to Great Britain and now survivors and their families are retracing the rail route from vienna to london. John maguire has been to meet them. Newsreel 200 boys and girls wave a greeting to england, land of the free. With the nazis intensifying their persecution ofjewish families come, in 1938 a delegation appealed to the British Government to take in thousands of child refugees. This was the kindertransport german for child transport. 80 years on, some of those children now with families of their own, have recreated the voyage across europe and to harwich to board a train and complete the final leg of theirjourney to london. Ilse melamid made the trip is an 11 year old alone. Unfortunately my sister hadnt yet found a place and so she and my mother remained behind. They were, you know, pushed around from place to place by the nazis. And the last two places the red cross confirmed was where they were was theresienstadt and auschwitz. Both died in concentration camps. As the war intensified, the exodus ended around. In all, around 10,000 children escaped their nazi occupied homelands. I remember my grandmother took me to the station. And when it was time for me to get on the train i didnt want to let go of her. I literally held onto her skirt and they had to pry my fingers loose. Once i got to the coach i was quiet. I knew it was no use. This is what they gave us when we arrived in harwich in 1939. Among those who arrived here injuly 1939 was Dame Stephanie shirley. At the time just five years old. One hand holding onto her older sister, the other a piece of paper her life depended upon. And this is a document of identity issued with the approval of her majestys government. Dame stephanie has forged a varied and very successful live here. In recent months the German Government has been making reparations to the kindertransport children, paying them thousands of euros. Now theres a call to donate that money to charities that help child refugees today. I decided to send the precise amount that had been sent to me, which was £2087. 60 or Something Like that to the Safe Passage Charity which looks after todays child refugees. And i thought that was very appropriate and im encouraging other people to do the same. Despite the changes, the improvements in life these people have seen over the past decades, around the world children are still being driven from their homes by terror. The survivors now want them to receive help, just as they and thousands of others once did 80 years ago. In a moment well have all the business news, but first the headlines on bbc news. Our contribution in belfast was to design an Innovative Carbon fibre composite wing using technology that we develop ourselves which has made a significant contribution to the overall aircraft. It means the aircraft is more environment friendly, less polluting . Absolutely, the aircraft has about 20 lower Carbon Dioxide footprint and about 50 lower oxygen footprint and about 50 lower oxygen footprint than other aircraft in the marketplace. Waterspouts and flooding in Louisiana Residents of new orleans are urged to leave the city or take shelter as a powerful Tropical Storm bears down on the area. Good morning. Welcome to bbc newsroom live. Im Rachel Schofield. The American Military says its trying to put together a coalition to protect commercial shipping in the gulf after the royal navy had to intervene to help a british tanker which was being confronted by iranian vessels. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt has promised to reverse cuts to the size of the royal navy if he becomes Prime Minister. Rising tensions with iran have led to uk merchant vessels being placed on the highest security alert near the strait of hormuz. On one side are the arab states including a number of key allies. On the other iran. Between them, the strait of hormuz at its narrowest point its only 21 miles across. But in total, a fifth of the worlds oil exports are squeezed through this tiny corridor. So any disruption there affects Global Oil Supplies, and as a result, prices. Earlier i spoke to guy platten, general secretary of the International Chamber of shipping, about why accessing the area is so important for his members. This is a vital strategic waterway, about 10,000 vessel this is a vital strategic waterway, about 10 , 000 vessel tra nsited a year. That equates about 19 Million Barrels per day. It is a key bit of water space. With this recent incident, how concerning is that to your members . We are deeply concerned about instant, not the one just a few, days ago, but the one a month before that. We have to have some context about it, these are a small number of incidents against safe transits a year. Nonetheless we are concerned. It is about freedom of navigation, it is important for the free flow of world trade. It is enshrined in International Law and needs to be upheld by all member states. With the security setting for uk merchant vessels now being on the highest level, what does that mean in practical terms for those passing through the area . We regularly issue guidance. You need to cooperate closely with your flag state. Every ship will have a security plan, there are Additional Securities you can take, extra lookouts to making sure your watertight integrity is as good as it can be and plan more transit. There are various precautionary measures you put into place and we issue guidance on a regular basis to shipping companies and ships cruise as well because primarily this is about the safety of the cruise. In terms of taking extra precautionary measures, is there a cost . Additional finances insurance. You are entering an area in which you need to inform your insurer is that youre entering and that will result in quite significant additional premiums. After the events of last month they quadrupled the amount of premium you needed. It has come down a little bit since then. It is a significant premium and Insurance Companies will keep the whole thing under constant review. What are your views about proposals being talked about this morning, the military in the us talking about building a coalition to protect allied ships. Jeremy hunt singh perhaps a military presence needs to be looked at that ain . Presence needs to be looked at that again . We can see that there is a sort to countries coming together, it did secure that freedom of navigation and in this case the threat of somali piracy. What we wa nt to threat of somali piracy. What we want to make sure is that any coalition, it does actually achieve that, that freedom of navigation, the freedom of shareholders to trade smoothly and safely through these waters. The former television presenterjohn leslie has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman over 10 years ago. The alleged incident took place in 2008, when the woman was 30 years old. John leslie is due to appear at Wesminster Magistrates Court later this month. Earlier i spoke to our turkey correspondent mark lowen. It plunges turkeys relationship with the us and with nato potentially to a new low. Because the us had warned turkey repeatedly not to buy military equipment from natos archrival, russia. And yet, president erdogan was absolutely clear that they would stick to the plan on this one and that they bought for 2. 5 billion dollars, a s 400 Missile Defence shield. And the first parts of which have been arriving in ankara. President erdogan has said turkey has the right to choose its own defence capabilities. That it faces numerous threats from across the border in syria. You will remember the attempted coup in 2016 when parliament and the presidency were bombed. The problem for nato is that Russian Military equipment here would potentially compromise natos own equipment. We have had a statement by nato saying we are concerned about the potential consequences of turkeys decision to acquire the s 400 system into operability of our armed forces. It is fundamental to nato for the conduct of our operations and missions. On top of that the us has warned it will be expelled from a programme. On top of that, the us have threatened to turkey that it will be expelled from a programme to sell ankara the f35 fighterjets and also that it would lead to economic sanctions on turkey, even that it has now engaged in a Missile Defence deal with russia. What are your thoughts on how this will play out, clearly there is a lot of anger and hostility . I think the turkish government is still hoping that President Trump will intervene to block any sanctions. President erdogan appealed to him earlier this month. The turkish government have put all their chips on President Trump. The problem as far as turkey is concerned, the us congress believe that sanctions need to be applied. Sanctions have been a key part of the trump white houses armoury against other countries, china and iran. So they need to be tough with turkey to maintain that and if sanctions are applied, it could really hurt the turkish economy at a time when turkey is facing huge economic problems. And president erdogan is not a man who likes to give ground when he feels pressure from outside. So a real rift could develop between turkey and the us, turkey and nato. Turkey is natos hugely important member in its southern flank. And so once you start having tensions between the military alliance and ankara, it could have serious consequences. A man is being questioned by detectives investigating the killing of a heavily pregnant woman and her baby in south london. The 25 year old was arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday. The mayor of new orleans has warned that a Tropical Storm moving towards the coast of louisiana could bring 48 hours of continuous rain. Storm barry could become a hurricane when it makes landfall. Residents have been warned to seek shelter or leave new orleans. The low lying city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The region has already been saturated by days of heavy rain, as our correspondent sophie long reports. The streets of new orleans were turned into rivers by the thunderstorms and flash floods of barrys warm up act. A state of emergency across louisiana is already in place as people await the main event. As the storm creeps towards the coast, it is growing in intensity. Forecasters predict it could reach hurricane strength, just in time to strike land late friday or early on saturday. Residents of new orleans, who are no strangers to storms or hurricanes, are making the relevant preparations, stocking up on water and emergency supplies. While it is uncertain what the impact will be, we will be affected and we need to be prepared and we are prepared to respond. This doesntjust mean the city of new orleans by itself. It means all of our residents as well. The main concern is the already swollen mississippi river. If a storm surge, predicted to move up from the gulf of mexico, pushes water levels over 20 feet, it could overwhelm the levees protecting the city. People here know what the consequences of that could be. No one has forgotten the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which claimed more than 1,800 lives. Four time winners new zealand got their campaign off to a winning start, comfortably beating malawai avenging the shock defeat they suffered to them at the Commonwealth Games last year. All the scores you can find on the bbc website. Lets go back to that breaking news. What do you know . Warships potentially escalating the situation. There is an urgent need to be sure that british flagged vessels are to be sure that british flagged vessels a re protected. To be sure that british flagged vessels are protected. The departure of hms duncan, at 845 destroyer has been advanced a few days. That will been advanced a few days. That will be on its way to the goal. For a time there will potentially be to uk warships in the area. The existing worship is due for some maintenance and so on. So that will eventually go back for its maintenance and whatever. But as i say, it does give the opportunity a greater flexibility to have two warships in place for a particularly sensitive period. In terms of the ground these ships have to cover, how significant, how helpful does it make it to have a second question mark that a vast of ships in the region. The number of actual british flagged vessels are smaller but even so, if they have to be shepherded, watched over one by one, the only options are either you gather them together with one sort of effective convoy. That is difficult because they do not arrive at the same spot at the same time, it is disrupt them. Or you need more vessels in them. Or you need more vessels in the water to carry out the mission. We do not know how long there will be two warships present and operational in the gulf, but it gives that option should it be needed. And how much thought do you think has gone into this decision. As you highlighted there is a tension between wanting to protect and not wanting to inflame an already delicate situation. A huge amount of thought has gone into it. It isa amount of thought has gone into it. It is a hugely complex situation at the moment. On one hand you have the broader context, there are row between iran and the us, trungs decision to walk away and reimpose a crushing secondary sanctions. President trump. Iran pushing back by attacking shipping in the gulf. Then you have that particular bilateral aspect between britain and iran, a tanker containing oil, Royal Marines were involved. The gibraltarians authorities and have insisting that is not to do with iran, it was about where that tanker was going to. They believe it was going to syria. The position all along and the chief minister was emphasising it, in their view this is entirely separate. It is just another element of tension in the gulf region. British flagged vessels are underan gulf region. British flagged vessels are under an additional potential threat. That is why the threat level, the warnings have been raised to the very highest level and clearer were clearly at is why another vessel is being sent out. Thank you very much. Theresa may has said that whoever succeeds her as Prime Minister must be more interested in Public Service than power. In terms of the numbers, a lot has been made of tonights interviews with andrew neil with both candidates do not have much difference to make because eve ryo ne have much difference to make because everyone has voted. The suggestion todayis everyone has voted. The suggestion today is that maybe not. The ballots went out a fortnight ago. The expectation was that they would be filled in quickly. Therefore you get to this stage in the race and there would still be an air war going out, lots of arguments on tv and everything, but it would not make any difference. But the suggestion as there are loads of members who have not voted. Jeremy hunts team have not voted. Jeremy hunts team have been hoping that members would hold off from voting. Who knows if that has happened. Either way, it means there is jeopardy there that perhaps we were not expecting to have. It is the oldest brand in travel, been going for 178 yea rs, brand in travel, been going for 178 years, its been through some tough, tough times but at the moment with debts of 2 billion, something had to happen and if you happen to work for thomas cook, if you happen to be a hotelier supplying rooms to them and crucially if you happen to be a holiday maker with something booked with them, its good news this morning. Four british people in a group of foreign teachers and students, have been arrested in eastern china. At least some of those being held are from an International Language school, education first. Police injiangsu province said all 16 foreigners had tested positive for illegal drug use. Our china correspondent Stephen Mcdonnell is following the story. Four britons were amongst 16 foreigners, all language teachers what language students who have been netted in this drugs sweat. Police say, acting on a tip, conducting a raid and they all failed a drug test. That does not mean they had drugs on possession were buying and selling them, it means they had illicit substances in the bloodstream. In china, it doesnt matter if last week you might have beenin matter if last week you might have been in colorado smoking marijuana where it is completely legal. If you return to china and you fail at one of these drug tests which can be com pletely of these drug tests which can be completely random, it doesnt matter, you are busted. I have seen these drug tests take place. Police will go into a bar and say to everybody in there, you must give a youre in sample on the spot. They hold it up to the light under the c rysta ls hold it up to the light under the crystals change colour, you go directly to a police van, then to a Detention Centre which is effectively a jail where you are held for two or three weeks and then you are told to leave the country. You lose your job you are told to leave the country. You lose yourjob and you cannot return to china for the next several yea rs return to china for the next several years and i would imagine that is exactly what is going to happen to these four britons. Rory kath and jones has been receiving treatment for cancer. It is the only place to offer this treatment in the uk. He has been keeping a video diary of his experience of this innovative treatment. We are in the retreatment room for our rehearsal day for treatment on this by. This is the i behind which there is a melanoma stop it has been there is a melanoma stop it has been there 14 years ago but it now needs further treatment that there are signs it is growing again. This is the seat where i will be treated and this is the machine which will fire the proton b into my eye and behind it, on the other side of that wall, isa it, on the other side of that wall, is a great big machine and we will find out if we can have a look at that. Time to come face to face with the machine that will blast protons into my eye. Im going to be on the other side of that . The protons go along that aluminium pipe there. Now we get the Hannibal Lecter style glasses. Youre not hungry, are you . Can you see this red light here . Keep looking towards that for me. The team retire to Mission Control to monitor the procedure. Keep looking towards the red light for me. The actual beaming lasts exactly 31 seconds. I see a strange blue light but feel nothing. We are all done there. Perfect. It is the following morning. The eye is feeling ok, a tiny bit irritable and a bit sticky but all right. It is on to the next round of proton b. Iam to the next round of proton b. I am delighted to say that rory joins me here now. You have brought the mass quickly. Presumably to keep you aligned in the right way . Absolutely, this is a very rare condition, seven people in a million get diagnosed with it every year. It is fewer than 500 and nearly half of them end up going to the centre for this treatment. I have had several forms of treatment but it is an incredible centre which is actually a collaboration between doctors and Nuclear Physicists. I was talking to Nuclear Physicists. I was talking to Nuclear Physicists. I was talking to Nuclear Physicists who make sure the machine is all running exactly to plan and you are in exactly the right position for the therapy. An extraordinary large piece of kit but you said you dont feel anything as it is happening . No, i said its a bit like a large hydro and collider. Except its colliding particles with your eye. It would be much smaller, they built it quite a while ago, but it is very expensive to build on the first place and maintain it. In terms of how the treatment works, this was last week . Yes. He went on everyday for 31 seconds, as you said, and that it needs to settle before they can see what has happened. I have been under constant treatment for the last 14 years and igo treatment for the last 14 years and i go back every few months and i will go back at the end of august and they will have a look behind my eye and see how much damage has been done to the tumour and hopefully, a lot. Absolutely and how does the treatment differ from the kinds of things you have gone through before . I had to have an device inserted behind my eye some time ago. I have since had some laser treatment but i think gradually, this proton b, which is a very sophisticated approach, is being seen as one really valua ble approach, is being seen as one really valuable way of treating this and other cancers. This unitjust does the eye cancer, there are other units being built around the uk which did with other forms of cancer. They are hopeful that this has wider treatment applications cosmic yes, proton beam is one radical method of treating various cancers. It is expensive, it is sophisticated but it works well with others and not so well with others. It is one exciting way of treating cancer. When you went along, there we re cancer. When you went along, there were other people who were being treated, presumably everyone has a sense of, drudgery . Yes, we were all put up in a hotel and we gradually recognised each other. About a dozen or so being treated at wake were saying, how your feeling, or so being treated at wake were saying, how yourfeeling, good luck with the appointment. A real sense of different people, a builderfrom cumbria, it retired getty from cheltenham, an accountant, and the unit itself, i cannot stress enough what wonderful place it is and how compassionate people are and what a greatjob compassionate people are and what a great job they compassionate people are and what a greatjob they do. Compassionate people are and what a great job they do. Clearly very helpful for you that in six weeks time you will go and get a good result. The people at home thinking, could this help me . What is the sense of what cancers that might have an application for the timescale of when it might be available to others . Obviously it is different for different cancers. I knew about this rare form of cancer andi knew about this rare form of cancer and i think the message i would like to get across is, it is very frightening when you are diagnosed with this the first time but the level of expertise that is available in this country is extraordinary and treatment itself, which you might think is frightening, is not. I said to somebody the other day, i find it easier than going to the dental hygienist despite the weird Hannibal Lecter in mask . Yes, i had this personal mask vetted, each person gets a precise mask so that headis person gets a precise mask so that head is completely still during treatment. Well, good luck six weeks time when you go back, it is very good future come in and talk about it. At least 35 people have been injured after severe turbulence on an air canda flight, which was forced to make an emergency landing. The boeing 777 aircraft, from vancouver to sydney, hit trouble around two hours beyond hawaii and diverted back to the capital honolulu. The aircraft was carrying 269 passengers and 15 crew members. Lets speak to a specialist in Atmospheric Science at reading university. This is a story that has been getting a lot of hits on our website, it fills people with horror. What we know about the kind of turbulence that seem come out of nowhere and affected this particular plane . The fear of flying is very common and psychologists have a name for it. It may be affecting 2030 of the population so im not surprised at all the Public Interest in this turbulence encounter, and we all fly these days and encounter trouble and is. The airline says this particular encounter was clear evidence and if that history, it would have been invisible, not to be seen out of the cockpit window. The radar were not affected up, it literally would have come out of the blue. People were moving around inside the cabin. How does that differ to the normal turbulence which has as being told, sit down, built on. If that is toby la nzer sit down, built on. If that is toby lanzer associated with sit down, built on. If that is toby la nzer associated with clouds sit down, built on. If that is toby lanzer associated with clouds and storms, at least you can see the clouds out of the window and the radar picks up the gloves as well so there is a warning. That turbulence tend not to injure people because the seat belt sign goes on and that is virtually a guarantee of safety but this invisible kind, especially if it is not forecast ahead of time, thenit if it is not forecast ahead of time, then it really can be quite hazardous and the injuries we have seenin hazardous and the injuries we have seen in the past 24 hours are testa m e nt to seen in the past 24 hours are testament to that. Many people looking at this because it worries them, they think, when this happened when i am on a flight . How common is clear evidence . It is pretty rare, we think about less than 1 of the atmosphere at 35,000 feet has moderately strong turbulence in it so the chance of your particular flight, so the chance of your particular flight, maybe if youre going later today, youre maybe unlikely to encounter it. Add it up to other flights in the sky at the time, sooner or later, someone will encounter this. We think Climate Change will cause it to become stronger in future so we will see more episodes like this unless we ta ke more episodes like this unless we take some action to stop it. Thats very interesting and i get scientists, if they think this will increase, well look at better ways forecast evidence . Thats one of the priority areas. There are three things we can do, we can try and better forecast the turbulence in the same way there are weather forecasts, there are turbulent forecasts, there are turbulent forecasts and they are Getting Better all the time. We could perhaps stop changing the climate in the first place, and we could also invest in technology to detect this invisible turbulence. It already exists today but it is not being used because it is too expensive and equally need more research to bring the cost of that down to the pilot can see this invisible prevalence and then clearair can see this invisible prevalence and then clear air turbulent encounters could be confined to the history then is, that could be a game changer if the Technology Advancesin game changer if the Technology Advances in the way i hope it will. Around 10,000 children were evacuated and no survivors and their families are retracing the real boot. And when it was time for me to get on the train i didnt once i got to the coach i was quiet. John maguire, bbc news, london. The french environment minister is under pressure after providing lavish dinners. Media part also alleges he carried out extensive renovations to his official residence. The investigative website, media part, say he hosted a dozen luxury dinners between 2017 and 2018 and his official residence. On the menu, expensive shellfish, champagne and vintage wines costing more than 500 a bottle. Theres a suggestion of illegality but his future is very much the spotlight. Translation there are ethical rules which must be followed when representing the electric in the nation and in this case they were simple not respected. He should not be part of the government. Things got worse for him later when media pa rt got worse for him later when media part said the taxpayer had paid 71,000 for the renovation of his government provided apartment. This included 19,000 on a dressing room. These are the headlines he and president michael would have wanted to avoid. This damaging row comes as they try to recover from more than six months of Anti Government protests, protests which were in pa rt protests, protests which were in part fuelled by claims that the political elite were out of touch with ordinary people. Has insisted that the dinners were linked to his job and the renovation work had been necessary for the apartment because some rooms were in repair. Translation there were checks to be made and i am quite ready to comply and if they have been errors on my part, i will also be ready to correct them. It is normal we have to show accountability to the french people. I have been elected since 2001 and i have always been accountable to the french people. Later, media part also said he had rented social housing since 2016. He denied he had any knowledge of this and posted details of his agreement for the apartment on his facebook page. But this image will be hard to forget and for many, this scandal has put not just forget and for many, this scandal has put notjust him but the whole government in hot water. The parents of a 4 year old boy had described their horror when he vanished down a hole while working in the peak district, leaving him with life threatening injuries. He was enjoying a family day out when he suddenly disappeared as he was working with his six year old brother. We were out working as a family and our two older boys were in front of us and suddenly sam just disappeared and mark and i looked at each other and mark and i looked at each other and said, where did sam go . We thought he might have fallen a bit and then we realised we could not see him anywhere so we just ran towards him and we sell a gap in the ground that was 40 centimetres wide between two big deep cliffs and we look down and summers at the bottom of them, so had fallen through this gap about six metres down onto the rocks. Could you communicate with him . No, he was too far down and obviously because he had full and on his head, it was very difficult at that point taken it with him and he was only three at the time to market scrambled down. We could not climb down either sought mark had to find a way around the rocks and down to go and be with him. How did you manage to get to him . It probably took me a minute or so to scramble down with the rocks and to scramble down with the rocks and to squeeze through a couple of gaps to squeeze through a couple of gaps to get into him and i realised then that he was still with us but he was clearly quite seriously hurt. I picked him up and he managed to get him out of where he had fallen and then we made our way back to the road. Maybe ten or 15 minutes walk from the road and we met up but then the road. What injuries had he sustained . At that stage we didnt know so we could tell that he had hurt himself, he had fallen a long way, but it wasnt until we eventually got to the hospital that they were able to doa the hospital that they were able to do a proper test and scan. The obvious thing that point was the head injury, he had of a slow bind it very hard but we didnt know what else had happened and that was the hospital dealt with, trying to understand what is injuries were and they were weighed about damage to his brain and his spine as well, obviously he had fallen a great distance and he was only three so that what they were most read about. He looks to be in great help today, is he completely better, is there any legacy from it . At the moment we think he is absolutely normal. He did have a blade on his brain and there is a time period at which things might change and they say 20 years but at the moment, from our perspective, he isa the moment, from our perspective, he is a normal, healthy, happy, four year old boy and that is incredible. Hes going to school in september so that will be a big for him but yes, hes wonderful and we arejust him but yes, hes wonderful and we are just really grateful to the hospitalfor are just really grateful to the hospital for everything they did because they were brilliant with us that hole. One lucky little boy. In a moment its time for the 1 00 news but first, look at the weather. Most of us set for a fine weekend. Many of us have seen some sunshine today. Not everyone they were. This year shows it cloudy and damp this morning. We have a north westerly flow that is bringing cloud towards Northern Ireland and wales where we have seen some light showers so far today. If your spots will brighten up today. If your spots will brighten up through the afternoon. At the same time, we are watching eastern parts of scotland down the eastern side of england where we will see a few showers, anyone to thundery ones developing, especially deeper into the afternoon and the evening. As for temperatures, will still stay dry with sunny spells wimbledon, said buddy much fairfor the next three days, for the remainder of play. We cannot rule out a shower tomorrow but sunday is looking dry. Any showers that have developed today, any thunderstorms to the east will gradually fade into tonight. Most again will be dry overnight. The cloud bubbly increasing from the north but temperatures down compared to recent nights, maybe a little easier to sleep. That takes us into the weekend. This is how saturday is looking. A lot of cloud to begin with. Some sunny spells coming through. So the chance of one to showers in parts of scotland, Northern England and the midlands. Very hit and miss. There is more of a breeze and some low cloud at times towards the coast so just need to high teens whereas elsewhere they are in the low 20s. No pressure slips in right across the ben showers so we are expecting a fine day on sunday. Quite a bit of cloud around, a lot of that filtering down through eastern areas. It is going to beat cooler still along these coastal areas where there will be low cloud in places. Elsewhere, many places will be into the low 20s and some occasional sunny spells to be had. High pressure stays with us into the start of next week. From tuesday onwards, there will be an increasing chance of us seeing some showers at times.
