Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are former fleet street editor eve pollard and stephen bush the political editor, new statesman. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. thrown under the bus by boris thats the metros lead as britains ambassador to the us quits over his leaked critical comments about donald trump. The paper reports that Sir Kim Darroch felt forced to resign because borisjohnson refused to back him in last Nights Television debate. Meanwhile, according to the daily telegraph, allies of mrjohnson have insisted he must be free to choose the uks new ambassador to the us, should he become Prime Minister. The times has a similar line, reporting that theresa may has been warned that she must not tie the hands of her successor by appointing a replacement for sir kim. The paper also has an image of the duchess of sussex holding her son, archie mountbatten windsor, on his first public appearance outside windsor castle. The guardian leads with Sir Kim Darrochs resignation but also features claims from former labour staff that efforts to address anti semitism within the party were undermined. The eight whistleblowers defied gagging orders to speak to the bbcs panorama programme. And the daily mail has the findings of a study which shows that fruitjuice and fizzy drinks significantly raise the risk of cancer. So lets have a look at those in more detail over the next 15 minutes. Now, the times, theresa may told to keep out of talks on the new ambassador. Yes. Around with the top of the conservative party, about who should replace kim darroch, the former ambassador to the us who has resigned after his confidential briefing notes have then leaked. Theresa mays allies are pointing out that david cameron, shortly after announcing he would stand down, appointed his former chief of staff for to the ambassadorship and france. Boris johnson staff for to the ambassadorship and france. Borisjohnson allies are going on record saying that this is a key role and it should be made, the appointment should be made by the appointment should be made by the incoming Prime Minister. We know that theresa may was David Camerons preferred candidate whereas we also know that Boris Johnson is preferred candidate whereas we also know that borisjohnson is very preferred candidate whereas we also know that Boris Johnson is very far from theresa mays preferred candidate in this leadership race. She has not said that publicly but you are discerning that. We have pick that up. A couple of minor hints. What you make of this and how it may be resolved . We have ten days before the coronation of king boris andl before the coronation of king boris and i guess that actually the sitting Prime Minister can do what she wants, really. It is an importantjob. She wants, really. It is an important job. On the she wants, really. It is an importantjob. On the other hand, everyone is about to go on holiday and even donald trump goes down to florida from time to time. So maybe it will not be that important. It is just a classic vilification argument at the top of the tory party. In fa ct at the top of the tory party. In fact i think adam duncan said, you know, this should be, this was all to do with boris. Actually, nothing that darroch had written. Can you imagine what the french ambassador is writing back . What all of them are probably saying . This is the most extraordinary white house. Diplomats normally deal with the state department. Not here, not now. They deal with the white house and you have to deal with the president. It isjust a completely you have to deal with the president. It is just a completely different way of running things and in fact it is very sad that this is happened to lam much is very sad that this is happened to i am much more interested is very sad that this is happened to lam much more interested in is very sad that this is happened to i am much more interested in who leaked the cable and how it got leaked the cable and how it got leaked and how many more cables perhaps could be leaked in the future because it is quite scary that you have a diplomat doing the right thing saying that this is how things look over here and you need to be able to say that to your Prime Minister. If you get a series of these, we are in trouble. Can we have confidence in the process that searches for the leaker . have confidence in the process that searches for the leaker . I hope so. And i will also like to know how many people see these cables. I thought they were very much 121 and wrapped in a secret bag of silk and carried by carrier pigeon. Not really. I do like that image. Carried by carrier pigeon. Not really. Ido like that image. In carried by carrier pigeon. Not really. I do like that image. In the old days when you read books about spies, that is what they were. And you hope that within the digital age it would be the same. Although there isa it would be the same. Although there is a serious ongoing enquiry may be the police being brought in, it is not like the leak of information from the Foreign Office. The role of the Foreign Office is notjust to prepare the Prime Minister for visits but if the junior minister for trade goes to talk to senators they will also get diplomatic telegrams, the circle of suspicion is rather wider than that. You would assume that unless the leaker has been spectacularly stupid they are probably going to get away with it. The damaging thing here is not. In many ways it is a bit like spying. We know every embassy doesnt but we also know that if the embassy gets caught need a new embassy. The damaging thing is that many civil serva nts damaging thing is that many Civil Servants feel that the message here is that if my confidential information ends up in the newspapers, the government will not support me and that will have a Chilling Effect on the quality of information. And if you are saying that many people get these missives, maybe that sort of cable should be limited to three pairs of eyes. That things need to be rethought. Given what donald trump said about Sir Kim Darroch having had this airing of all this, was his position tenable oi all this, was his position tenable ordid he all this, was his position tenable or did he realise that he had to go . He was not being allowed into meetings. He was being disinvited from things. I think he probably thought there was no point in staying. It is also possible, he has worked with boris and boris at a long talk with him this afternoon that was warm and friendly. But it is possible that he thought this is not a job i want to be back for a maybe he will go on and find a great job for himself. On the internal Party Politics of this, the metro carries a quote from sir alan duncan who is no fan of borisjohnson so perhaps it is not surprising but it is strong language. It is very strong language. And even allowing an important caveat that he is Boris Johnson s number one critic, what this underlines is that this is the point when you expect people to say 0k, point when you expect people to say ok, idont like point when you expect people to say ok, i dont like him but it is not time to start saying hail to the chief. But instead you have alan duncan and the chair of the Foreign Affairs select committee essentially saying the same thing. It underlines that this is not a happy party and not a happy ship. It increases the chances he will have to look at the parliament and say i need my own mandate if i am to get anything done. That is bad and it makes the public s view of politicians as self centred and thinking about themselves and not about the country all the people who put them there. Just pleasing themselves because of their own likes and dislikes. Where is the sense of duty . Where is the sense that we should all come together. A final thought on this before we move on to labour, does any of this have any bearing, do you think, on the way conservative Party Members will vote . They went in on saturday. These are people who lay out their breakfast settings the night before. They are careful. They are older. They are tories. They can be laughed at but they get a letter, they reply to it and get on with it. Most people who vote by post whether it is this one or a nationwide ballot, no matter what, they vote when it arrives. The contest is ready much over. I mentioned the front of the guardian. A reference to panorama where x labour staff have defied a gag order. Eight of them, at the heart of the disciplinary process have told panorama about what they describe as a process of deliberate blocking and sabotage of attempts to remove anti semites from the labour party. The follow on story that will dominate over the next few days is that this is an issue of profound anxiety and nervousness for the labourmps, anxiety and nervousness for the labour mps, not just that they think
