Are bracing themselves for aftershocks after the region was hit by its biggest earthquake in more than 20 years. Its the second big tremor in as many days. The epicentre of the quake was near the city of ridgecrest, north east of los angeles. Angus crawfords report contains some flashing images. Oh, my god. Fear and shock. Two quakes in two days. This one with the magnitude of 7. 1, the strongest for 20 years. Evacuate nerves stretched to the limit. Go, go, go panic is infectious. 8 21am here on the air, we are experiencing. And very public. I think we need to get under the desk. 0k, were going to go to break. Well be right back. Wow. In hollywood, tourists werent sure what to make of it. Everythings moving, and the chandelier was shaking, and the kids were saying, its an earthquake. We saw that the rest of the people in our neighbouring rooms were looking at each other. We were all kind of scared, just freaking out about it. Landslides blocked some roads. Motorists using their bare hands to clear the debris. Broken gas pipes caused fires, though no serious injuries were reported. And heres why. The epicentre, remote ridgecrest near death valley. But theres more to come. This was a very large earthquake. And we also know theres going to be a series of aftershocks as a result of the main quake. So we want to prepare ourselves in being able to have those resources in place as the days go on here. For now, california counts the cost of this quake and waits for the next. Angus crawford, bbc news. Susan hough is the Earthquake Response co ordinator for the the Us Geological survey. She says the damage is substantial. The Property Damage losses could be as high as 1 billion from this earthquake all totalled. That is still being looked at obviously. There is one important point. Apart from the location, the ridgecrest in china lake only started after world war ii and that was after california had a state wide Building Code that was implemented after the 1933 long beach earthquake. So it made a big difference that there is very little old, vulnerable building stock like we have in other parts of california. People are scrambling to map out the surface break where the fault actually got to the surface. They had done that after the 6. 4, but now it is a much biggerjob. People are going to try to deploy portable instruments to get better recordings of the after shocks. Most of the break is actually on a navy base and so access is restricted, so theres a lot of coordination challenges. After the 6. 4 we said there is a small but not zero chance of something even bigger and sometimes those low probability, one in 20 events happen, so now weve reset the after clock. Theres the 7. 1 having its own after shocks, it is more energetic than the 6. 4, and we are back to that one in 20 chance that something even bigger will happen. There is no guarantee that we have seen the last of this and at a minimum, those after shocks are going to continue, as people in that area know very well at this point. They are going to continue for some time. The bbcs peter bowes is in los angeles. He explained more from there. This is really a story of dodging the bullet. The local police chief in the town most badly affected in the town very close to the epicentre has said it is difficult for the wa nt to has said it is difficult for the want to understand what we have been through in the past 48 hours and what he is getting at is the fact there have been no significant casualties, all the buildings are still standing, yes there has been some structural damage and for the people there living, this was terrifying, 7. 1 is a huge earthquake. I felt it in los angeles, 150 miles away. There were pictures falling off the wall in my home. You can only imagine what it was like for those people at the epicentre, but amazingly local Officials Say everyone is ok. Iran says it will start to enrich uranium to closer to weapon grade level, if European Countries dont find a way to save the nuclear deal by sunday. The us has pulled out of the deal and introduced new sanctions. The Reuters News Agency is reporting that iran will go 5 above the enrichment limit set out in the nuclear deal. Kia atri is with bbc monitoring and explained what tehrans motive is. I think they have opted for a graduated approach since last year, when the americans pulled out of the nuclear deal and this is their way of saying that when the other side is not acting on their obligations, then this is our way of reversing that pressure. In order to reap the benefits, the economic benefits of this nuclear deal. Thats the official line. They are really struggling under the sanctions at the moment. The sanctions are really biting hard. Its really affecting their oil exports adversely and they have no International Banking links, so thats making the repatriation of oil revenues very difficult and there were incomes have dwindled over the past few months. This is what President Trump wanted. He has tried to get them back to renegotiate. President trump didnt believe the nuclear deal that was signed in 2015, officially known as thejoint comprehensive signed in 2015, officially known as the joint comprehensive panel action, did not go far enough to address the Nuclear Consent of the west and therefore he said that he will continue to exert these precious to bring iran back to the negotiating table. We know the iranian president has spoken to the french president and the past few hours. How did their conversation go . It is the statement of the same position before. The french have said the europeans are committed to preserving the deal and the iranian president has repeated the same old line that this is economic terrorism against iran. Iran is not benefiting from the sort of economic fruits of this deal and the french have said that the European Union is going to do its best to preserve the deal. Tough issues to deal with but very positive and i think this is something they can deliver on. Stay with us on bbc world news, still to come a private ceremony and a special moment the duke and duchess of sussexs son is christened at Windsor Castle. Welcome back, this is bbc world news today. The latest headlines a powerful earthquake has hit Southern California for the second california for the second time in a matter of days. Its the strongest in the region for 25 years. A charity boat carrying 41 rescued migrants defied a ban from the countrys far right interior minister, matteo salvini, on docking at italian ports. The captain of the italian registered ship, the alex, said he had to come into the port of lampedusa because of intolerable hygiene conditions aboard. The authorities have not allowed the migrants to disembark, although they have sent food, water and medicines on board. For more on this i can speak now to amien essif, a reporter with the german broadcaster deutsche welle. He is at lampedusa port. Thank you for being with us. What more do we know about this boat and those on board 7 more do we know about this boat and those on board . We know that they are still on board. I talk to somebody from the italian ngo in charge of the ship. She told me that they are working, trying to get the people of the ship, cooperating with the coast guard at this point. She said the people they rescued are not sure why they are still on the boat. It has been difficult to explain to them why after spending two days at sea they have not been able to come onto dry land. Do we know the kind of conditions they are in . She said they are extremely exhausted. Just yesterday the Italian Coast Guard went out to that ship, the small sailboat which was not equipped to deal with so many people, went out there to pick up women, children and those with medical conditions. They we re those with medical conditions. They were brought to the same port yesterday, so the people on board we re yesterday, so the people on board were deemed more healthy and more fit, but she said they are exhausted. We have seen People Holding reflective bankers to help protect themselves from the sun. The sun has gone down, it has called off a bit but they need to get off the boat as soon as possible. We know the government, in particular the interior minister, has taken a hard line approach against the ships carrying migrants saying they are illegal, they are not allowed on land in italy. This is an italian registered boat though, does that change anything . It could change something. The german boat is still out at sea. But this boat, unlike the sea watch that had a stand off with the Italian Government last week did not bump any patrol boats, no police boats. They said they were neither given permission to come into port nor did the coastguard try to stop them when they came in. It is unclear what the interior minister will say about this, but so far there havent been any arrests and the crew and the captain according to what the spokesman sunset are waiting to find out what happens next. The sea watch was involved in an incident with the Police Patrol boat and the captain of that boat has been arrested, but the migrants were allowed off that boat. What is the difference . Well, you mean they were allowed into port . Yes. The difference is they came into port. Dci is still out there and is still waiting for some of single from the government. They have not disobeyed orders as the sailboat did today. They are a much larger ship and they have a lot of supply so they cant declare a state of emergency as this ship did right now. But it seems the italian coastguard is required to take people off the ship and take them to immigration once they come in. This boat will most likely be disembarked shortly. There have been ambulances who have come in and otherfans to ta ke who have come in and otherfans to take them away to the Immigration Centre later. The 0rkney islands off scotlands mainland contain archaeological treasures of global significance, but their World Heritage status could soon be under threat because of climate change. Experts say rising seas and higher rainfall mean popular sites like the ancient village of skara brae are extremely vulnerable. The bbcs james cook reports from 0rkney. Skara brae is important to me because its part of 0rkneys history. They taught us about skara brae at school, and it was a really interesting thing to learn about. It brings a lot of people into orkney, and into the surrounding areas. And personally, for me, i had a lot of great experiences there when i was younger, as well. It draws tourists, and it generates a lot of interest which, like, everyone benefits from. Everywhere where you we go in 0rkney, you meet history. But now, that history is under threat. Skara brae is onlyjust clinging on. For years, ewan hyslop has been watching nervously as the sea advances on the village. This has been here for, what, 5,000 years, this site . Is there really that severe a threat from the way that climate is just changing in the last few years . The threat here is very real, in terms of the survival of this site. The global projections for Sea Level Rise are quite astonishing, in that by the end of this century, by 2100, sea level around most of the planet could be a metre higher than it is now. If these defences werent here, what wouldve happened to the site . We certainly would have lost parts of the site, and possibly up to two thirds of the site would have gone. Two thirds of skara brae would have been washed away . Yeah, yeah, so these defences are absolutely essential. And it isntjust skara brae. Access to the ancient ring of brodgar is also threatened by climate change, say conservationists. Well, the treasures of 0rkney have weathered the elements for thousands of years, and so it is tempting to think of them as robust. But Scientists Say theyre actually more fragile than that, and they are now extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change. But there is some good news. This report also finds the community here is tough enough to respond to the challenge. This is the Main Business in the world for wind power and tide tested. We make the most of what has come along. So there are grounds for optimism. After all, 0rkney has been adapting to the climate for thousands of years and people say this island too, their Island Heritage would enjoy. The duke and duchess of sussex, harry and meghan, say theyre overjoyed at the christening of their son, archie, at Windsor Castle earlier. It was a private affair with no press allowed, and not all the senior royals there. Theyve also kept the identities of archies godparents private. The bbcs royal correspondent, nicholas witchell, has been scouting for information on this very secret ceremony. We have two macro photographs, issued by kensington palace. And it issued by kensington palace. And it is the first proper site we have heard of baby archie because he was so heard of baby archie because he was so wrapped up just after his birth. There he is on the terrace and here the family group and a very clear picture of him sitting on his mother slap in picture of him sitting on his mother s lap in the green drawing room to Windsor Castle. Interestingly in the back row behind the success, megans mother and the assistance of wales, so mother and the assistance of wales, 03 mother and the assistance of wales, so a very mother and the assistance of wales, so a very deliberate attempt to include diana, to have her sisters there. Queen, queen elizabeth, was not there, she has another engagement and the thing that has caused a little bit of controversy here is the fact that there were no press a ccess here is the fact that there were no press access to the guests arriving as they would normally be and they have kept secret the identities of the godparents. A few showers across northern and eastern scotland, but with some sunshine and light winds for the majority and more sunshine coming through for england and wales, it will feel pleasantly warm, the sun is still strong, pollen levels very high again. Quite a chilly start for monday. But it will soon start to warm up. We lose that north westerly breeze, we pick up the atlantic influence with the approach of rain late in the day. For most another dry, bright day, good spells of sunshine, light winds and feeling quite well in that strong july sunshine.
