Talking to conservative members, as they make their choice for their next party leader. Jeremy hunt and borisjohnson have both promised to protect the union while delivering brexit. But Nicola Sturgeon says scotland is heading towards independence, regardless of who wins the contest. Our scotland editor sarah smith sent this report from perth. Welcome to scotland. Noisy independence protesters are determined to be heard, as the tory leadership race arrives north of the border. At the nearby scottish game fair, voters were considering how the contest could affect scotland. Borisjohnson would be more likely to lead to an independent scotland in the shorter term. Why . Just because he is rather outspoken, and to a certain extent, hes the antithesis of what people in scotland are looking for as a politician. I think boris is not popular in scotland. Why is that . Why is boris not popular in scotland . I think hes too flippant. I dont think hes serious enough for the scots. Hes not down to earth enough. Despite the foxhounds, not everyone here is a hunt fan. I hate to say it, but probably boris. Why . Oh, gosh, i dont know. Because he has more personality, i think. Borisjohnson has got eager support from several scottish tory mps, who clearly dont think him or his brexit plans are a threat to the union. My First Priority is obviously the union, and that would, i hope, be obvious. Would you say the same if someone in england asked you . And i tell you what, i think actually a great brexit, and a successful, pragmatic brexit, can be a good thing, a wonderful thing, to entrench and intensify the union. Jeremy hunt gave a much more explicit promise that he would never allow another Scottish Independence referendum. Im a unionist to my core, and i say this. As Prime Minister of the united kingdom, iwill never allow our union to be broken up. And, if the first minister of scotland asks me for a second independence referendum, i will muster up my british politeness and i will say no. Both candidates have said tonight that they are passionate unionists who can deliver a brexit that wont break up britain. There scottish tory members now need to decide which man they believe can really do that. I shall definitely be leaning towards boris johnson. Before i came tonight, i was backing boris. After leaving the hustings this evening, im 50 50. They both gave good arguments. Im voting for hunt. I like him very much, i like his attention to detail. Some tory members have their ballot papers already. Voting has begun. They are choosing our next Prime Minister right now. Sara smith, bbc news, perth. We saw the peak in the heat yesterday, and the top temperature, 28 celsius, 82 fahrenheit, compared with the cooler, cloudier 16, 61 fahrenheit further north. That cool, cloudier air is heading southwards, on a weather front that has been meandering very slowly south, from northern ireland, Northern England, heading towards north wales and the wash by the time we get there. The warm air uncomfortable for sleeping but it will feel much fresher by morning further north. That fresher air is on a cold weatherfront and is heading southwards, so i think it will introduce more cloud across england and wales during the course of saturday, in particular today, so it will feel cooler as a result. That cold weather front is also followed by a north westerly breeze which is never a warm direction. If you are sheltered from the breeze in the sunshine that follows across scotland, Northern England and northern ireland, it will feel pleasant. This weather front will take much of the day to meander across wales, the midlands and east anglia into the south east. Introducing cloudy skies and even the splash of rain, so if youre heading to wimbledon, it does look cooler, more cloudy, there could be some sunshine getting through that cloud, but i would not like to rule out a shower later in the afternoon, early evening, because that weather front could give a few sharp splashes of rain here and there not for all but what it does do is dampen the heat. 28 we saw on friday not repeated, still warm across the south coast but for most of us, it is cooler temperatures, down to what they should be, there should be some lovely sunshine heading down beyond that weather front, it does not mean the temperatures are lower but it is just as strong. A few showers across the north and north east of scotland, they will continue through the evening and overnight, blowing further southwards, blowing that fresher air so it looks like a fresher night on whole, even further south just a little bit of warmth maintained in the towns and cities. But it could be that on sunday we still have that weather front dragging its heels across southern parts of england, still giving the odd shower and slow to clear. A little more cloud in eastern parts of england and scotland with the odd shower around but some dry, bright weather for the majority, the best of the sunshine in south west scotland in north west england, further south as well, feeling fresher, temperatures down to where they should be, and that is maintained into next week but it looks more unsettled further north.
