Police believe up to 400 victims were forced to work by a gang of polish criminals in the West Midlands who raked in millions. The gang lured Vulnerable People from poland to the uk where they forced them to work for a pittance. Eight people have been found guilty of offences including trafficking, Money Laundering and forcing people to perform forced labour. Sima kotecha has been at Birmingham Crown court and sent this report. Their victims, some as young as 17, were made to live in rooms like these filthy, often rat infested, with no heating or light, toilets blocked and the stench unbearable. The gang was made up of five men and three women, all from poland. 52 year old ignacy brzezinski, 41 year old Wojciech Nowa kowski and 26 year old jan sadowski were sentenced today to more than a total of 20 years for modern slavery offences. For the first time, the bbc can report that, in february, five others were convicted of their roles in the conspiracy and were also jailed. Together, they preyed on the vulnerable in poland and lured them to the West Midlands, promising them a wealthy life. They targeted former prisoners, the homeless, alcoholics. Translation to be honest, i came here to start a new life, but i didnt know that this new life would start with such really big problems. I couldnt even leave the house to go for a walk. They were following me, spying on me. They were controlling me. More than 90 victims gave evidence during the trial here, but Police Believe the true number of victims is in the hundreds. They were forced to carry out manual labour on farms and in factories and were paid as little as 50p a day, while their masters kept most of their earnings. The anti slavery commissioner said this case sends a strong message that trafficking will not be tolerated. West Midlands Police began looking into what was happening four years. They would convince the victims, for example, that they were unlawfully in the country, that if they left the house that the traffickers provided for them, that they would be arrested by the police. Sometimes, they were given a debt, so they were told that they owed the traffickers £5,000 and they had to work off that debt. So theres a lot of these methods the traffickers would use to make them feel trapped. 0ne slave was given a chicken as payment for redecorating a house. Another man had to wash in a canal because he had no other water. The gang was discovered after charities identified victims. This man works undercover and wants to remain anonymous. Very withdrawn, physically shaken, disorientated. We had victims presenting with black eyes, one victim presented with a broken arm, so his broken arm had re set itself out of alignment. Ripped clothing, emaciated. While the victims suffered, the gang bosses lived an opulent lifestyle, driving lavish cars and buying designer clothes. Over five years, they made at least £2 million. After sentencing, judge mary stacey told the court, the harm in this case was at the very highest level, and she warned that all too often such offences were being carried out in plain sight. Lets speak now to dr ella co bain lecturer in security and crime science at University College london specialising in human trafficking. Thank you forjoining us. We were hearing and that report, notjust the appalling details of the treatment of these victims, but the scale of it. 400 victims. Were you surprised that . I think in terms of the investigation and the prosecution, absolutely this is a huge scale. In terms of the pattern of offending and exploitation, it is definitely towards the extreme end of the spectrum, but i wouldnt say it is exceptional and what is happening in the uk. We are hearing about the way these men and women we re about the way these men and women were treated, how typical do you think that is in these sorts of cases . In terms of the work that we have done on trafficking, 450 cases of trafficking victims than the eu, it is enormously typical. So the stories about Bank Accounts being controlled and recruitment mechanisms being used, about the limited money, the squalid conditions. These very much resonate with the standard patterns. Of course, much of this is hidden, but how big a problem do you think it is in the uk today . Nobody really knows. What we do know is year on year, there has been a steady increase in the number of suspected victims in exploitation, but that only is a fraction of the two problem. True problem. The impact of the grooming process, worrying about their own immigration status, shame and harassment and so forth. No one really knows the exact scale, but under worrying usually we should take the cases like this and focus on the offenders as bad apples and by the offenders in question clearly have done horrific things and are bad apples, there are also bigger problems of the bad system, the bad barrels. The ways in which our Labour Market and immigration policies actually facilitate and perpetuate labour like this stop by theresa may did try to try try and crack down on the problem but are you suggesting that further changes need to be made so people responsible for this sort of behaviour are going to be brought to justice . Yes and the modern slavery agenda is very much but the hostile environment agenda. Tension is there, things that happened on her watch, the working offence that creates whole categories of people who are vulnerable to exploitation. We also have problems, for example, with labour inspectors being woefully under resourced. The chances of businesses being inspected are very low and declining medicine and it immunisation, people able to access their rights and the rights of nonstandard work, temporary work, all of these things that contribute to the precariousness of the workplace stop idfor precariousness of the workplace stop id for the public could perhaps play a role in this . Are there specific things they could be looking out for . In some instances, particularly in the most extreme ones, absolutely there are things of the public can do. But relying on the public is the way to solve this is not going to work. Hey, it is a far bigger problem than that and be, there is a real risk that the indicators that exist have not really been tested and we do not know how effective they are and a lot of them can inadvertently result in discrimination and profiling. Racial profiling, profiling of certain groups of workers, some big changes as well. Thank you very much indeed for talking to us this evening. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages. At 10 40 and 11 30 this evening in the papers our guestsjoining me tonight are editor of politics home, Kevin Schofield and uk correpondent for france 24, benedicte paviot. The former leader of the far right English Defence league, Tommy Robinson, faces jail after being found guilty of contempt of court. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley lennon, was convicted of filming defendants in a child sexual explotation trial and broadcasting the footage on social media in breach of a reporting ban on the case. Our special correspondent, lucy manning reports. Shame on you the news that Stephen Yaxley lennon had been found in contempt of court did not go down well with his supporters outside the old bailey. Some surged at the police missiles thrown, batons raised. It had been calmer in court, where the man also known as Tommy Robinson just shook his head as thejudge said he had interfered with the justice process. How are you feeling about your verdict . About your verdict . What verdict . How are you feeling about the verdict . It was this controversial broadcast live on social media last year that meant he had broken strict rules about what can be reported about court cases. It doesnt seem like much guilt. Hed filmed and confronted defendants accused of Sexual Exploitation of girls outside leeds crown court. It was viewed more than 250,000 times. Thejudge said mr Yaxley Lennons behaviour, aggressively confronting some of the defendants, Live Streaming from outside leeds crown court, and breaking reporting restrictions was a serious interference with the administration ofjustice. Leaving the courtroom, mr Yaxley Lennon claimed, ive been convicted for who i am, not what ive done. You have now been found in contempt of court, do you think the myth of Tommy Robinson has been burst now . You dont care that peoples freedoms have been taken away that a judicial system has just prosecuted someone because of who they are, not what theyve done, you dont care, do you . Do you not care about peoples freedoms to report . You are meant to be a journalist do you think you are going back to prison . I know i am going back to prison. Last may, mr Yaxley Lennon was sent to jail for 13 months but released after just two because it was found the decision had been rushed. He will now be sentenced again and could return to prison. A warning that Police Numbers are dangerously low, which is contributing to a feeling of lawlessness, it comes from six former heads of the metropolitan police who blame cuts to Police Resources , police who blame cuts to Police Resources, which have undermined their ability to solve crime and restore public confidence. The government responded by saying its been a record amount on policing last year. A virtual destruction of neighbourhood policing, resources drain to dangerous levels. People left with perilously low expectations. Some of the words used by former Police Commissioners to describe the state of policing in the uk. In the letter to the times, they blamed cuts and sing the system must be overhauled. Everyone notices that it has been cut back to extreme levels and people noticed the police struggling to respond to all of the calls they put in and increasing the, we have had eight years of policy misdirection stop by the former commissioners ranted between 1993 in 2017, they say contributing to the feeling of lawlessness with truck and knife crime, major factors. Stabbed to death five years ago, set up a charity helping young people stay safe. Do you agree with that the former commissioners said today . It is not all about police cuts, but the police cuts have a very large factor in terms of why knife crime and Youth Violence have gotten out of control to the degree that it has. If we had more police, they will be able to do theirjob more right now because of the cuts to the police, because of the cuts to the police, because of the cuts to Community Groups and within the social surroundings, we are now dealing with a horrendous, horrifying problem of Youth Violence. Funding has increased in the system is being reformed, while it may feel like lawlessness to some, stats show Violent Crime is down year on year but more must be done. The last eight to nine years, offices being lost from london, Community Offices being lost from london, hollowing out of neighbourhood policing, that is why its real important for the experts to speak out and that the government reverses the message on policing, but Preventive Services too. Sport now and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres Lizzie Greenwood hughes. Another victory for the 15 year old sensation. Exactly, it hasjust been an incredible show. The american wild card had an incredible comeback and those waiting to watch andy murray and Serena Williams play their mixed doubles left to wait until tomorrow because golf game went on so long, lets go live to where he is following us and he has done it, the 15 year old is into the fourth round you think those sorts of chairs are only reserved for british players here at wimbledon, the likes of andy murray, but not tonight with the sensational player in the fourth round. When you consider that she was almost out of this match, saving two match points. It was the first set that she dropped. We know how calm and how well she has been playing despite being only 15 years old and she did look as though the occasion, playing on centre court got to her, but having dropped the first set, she came back and took the second set and then the match point, it was her who said that long. Jumping forjoy, an incredible result and it means that she is into the next round, where she will play again and you can expects plenty of support as she has cemented yourself and wimbledon history with her performance of this year. We were expecting to see them out today, but not so this evening. When confirming that they will not be playing today, they will be playing tomorrow instead. We did think at one stage, perhaps they might begin this match but with the golf match going on, and other matches on the court, thats where they will see them play and tomorrow instead. A huge cheer is expected when they do to court because much returns for andy murray here, not in the singles but in the doubles, the mixed doubles to come and all eyes will be on her once again after that sensational performance booking her place in the fourth round. The bbc understands from multiple sources that downing street tried to withhold some of the most sensitive security information from work Boris Johnson due to a lack of confidence on his part. This evening the two leadership hopefuls are in scotland for Party Hustings in perth. Both men have promised to protect the union while delivering brexit. But Nicola Sturgeon says scotland is heading towards independence, regardless of who wins the contest. 0ur scotland editor sarah smith has been speaking to tory Party Members and sent this report from perth. That question of the union moving large, but have they been saying . Both of them have been touching on Scottish Independence in the speeches when they are behind the podium this evening, this is halfway, the Halfway Point through the hustings and they have talked about the union and they have both talked extensively about brexit and here in scotland, they have also been talking about the formula, but jeremy hunt and borisjohnson say that the formula will stay but the union has loomed large. Boris johnson was the first take to the stage and said that he thought that since the 2014 independence referendum that the uk had become complacent on the union and he said it if he became Prime Minister he would not allow the break up of the union to a occur. As Prime Minister of the United Kingdom i will never allow our union to be broken up and if the first minister of scotland asks me for a second independence referendum, i will muster up my british politeness and i will say, iio. The format of these events is such that you do not get both men on the stage with candidates on the stage at the same time and instead, one comes on, gives a speech to the conservative Party Members and then ta kes conservative Party Members and then takes questions from the moderator and then from the audience. Jeremy hunt was up for the first hour and borisjohnson took hunt was up for the first hour and Boris Johnson took to hunt was up for the first hour and borisjohnson took to the stage just a short while ago. Tonight, i want to salute everybodys year, scottish conservatives what youre doing to uphold and protect that Precious Union and amazing job you have done in defeating those who would rip our union apart. And i want to thank very much Ruth Davidson and all of my scottish friends and colleagues here. Boris johnson and jeremy hunt speaking to an audience of conservative Party Members, they got loud cheers when theyre talking about the United Kingdom, but it is not so clear cut here that you decide to look outside the concert hall before the event got under there was a large crowd of a couple hundred protesters who were anti brexit and pro Scottish Independence, booing and jeering at conservatives as they made their way into the concert hall this evening. But in terms of conservative party leaders, that comes down to the party itself. When hundred 60,000 or so members of the conservative party who will decide who becomes the next conservative party leader and who becomes Prime Minister as well. And the double match has been postponed until tomorrow. Welcome to bbc ask this, where well be answering your questions about the future of electric vehicles in the uk. Were talking about this today because britsh car maker, Jaguar Land Rover is investing hundreds of millions of pounds to build a range of electric vehicles at its plant in birmingham. It will begin with an electric version of the jaguar xj from 2020. The company says it will help secure the jobs of more than two and a half thousand workers at the plant although it announced almost double the number ofjob losses earlier in the year. But with purely electric cars accounting for just 1 of the market, does todays decision reflect Consumer Choice . Our Business Editor simonjack reports. Lets have a look at some of your questions then. Roger atkins and stewartjoining us. But first, our Business Editor simon reports. After 6000 lay offs in the last two years, workers at Jaguar Land Rover finally had a reason to be cheerful as they arrived at work today. The boss announced the company was spending nearly £1 billion on electrifying one of its most famous models. Julia and Martin Davies got married after meeting at the plant. 0ur son in laws here, so this is the next generation, theyre taking it on. Its secured their futures, it is just fantastic. And that genesis. Jlr has been very downbeat about the damage a no deal brexit could do to future investment. Today there was a change of tune. Today is the day of electrifying the plant and honouring our people who are going with us to define a new electrified future. You are spending nearly £1 billion when you said the prospect of a no deal brexit would stop investment in the uk. Some will say you were crying wolf. We have made clear our statement to brexit, and nothing has changed. However, its also quite clear that we have a clear strategy, and we really want to go ahead, and we are, from our heart and soul point of view, we are a british company. Seeing a production line standing idle like this is not normally good news, but not today, this lot is going to be stripped out, totally re tooled to make the electric successor to the xj model. In the race for electrification, Jaguar Land Rover started almost in last place, with 90 of its fleet powered by diesel this is a very big step into an electric future. £1 billion sounds a lot, but it is tiny compared to what others are spending. The big manufacturers are making very big moves. Vw alone is investing £70 billion in electric cars. Daimler, the owner of mercedes, is spending 33 billion. In total, car makers have announced investments of £240 billion, with nearly half of that earmarked for projects in china, with the rest in north america, europe and japan. The car industry has fundamentally changed. There is going to be more change in the next ten or 15 years than the previous hundred years, and its a great shame that at this critical moment, the uk is punching below its weight because of concerns and uncertainty over brexit, for example, and weve got to cut through that as quickly as possible. There might be a risk that companies are moving faster than consumers here. Although the numbers are growing fast, electric cars only make up 1 of those on the road, principally because there arent enough of these charging points. Theres got to be a risk that were not ready to buy the cars they want to make. Its the end of an era for the xj, as the last of the old generation leaves the building. Privately, the company says, brexit permitting, other models may follow where the xj has led. Simon jack, bbc news, castle bromwich. Lets have a look at some of your questions then. As we were hearing, only 1 at the drivers are driving electric cars, but first we had a question here from roberto who wants to know from production to disposal how clean are electric vehicles because obviously the admissions are much less, but you have to think about battery and all of that. Its a good point, and as like an analysis showing how it works and variables around the world so if you had a clean grid then obviously there is a better proposition in terms of electric vehicles. Our grade in the uk is cleaner all the time in more solar and wind going into it so its only going to get better, so lost some of the comparisons are well to wheel if you like in terms of weather an banded c02 is, is pretty critical and important, its not that big issue people seem to assign it to kind of put detriment to it. I the whether bit is between imperative, not to c02 reduction its quality, so an electric vehicle almost regardless of where materials have come to build the battery and etc, the vehicle is clean at the point of use, because it doesnt have a tailpipe like a full battery electric vehicle, and that is something we should consider, is twin imperative, c02 and clean air. But of course there are difficult choices, we have a question here from dawn who says that electric ca rs from dawn who says that electric cars with a considerable range are simply too expensive for him, hes ona simply too expensive for him, hes on a low income and lots of people may be thinking of changing their cars, but looking at it, its a big problem. Right now it is, if youre talking about a brand new electric car because theres not many available for use its still a new thing, so for a available for use its still a new thing, so fora new available for use its still a new thing, so for a new electrical wires cries you have a good range, and relatively inexpensive, youre thinking they are expensive youre thinking about £30,000 for ca rdella youre thinking about £30,000 for cardella do more than 300 miles and for lots of people, its not in the budget. Its changing and let things like Jaguar Land Rover investing money in saline really committing to electric future, and five years time itll be different but for the average consumer right now electric is not the default option. We have a question here from manchester who wa nts to question here from manchester who wants to know what the Life Expectancy and the battery and an electric car is and what is the cost to replace it because you hear about significant investment to buy the vehicle in the first place but then what about battery . Heres the thing that battery for a while the scene of the liability of analysis enough to affect because increasingly increasing the manufacturer is look at second and third life to a battery for an Energy Storage device that once it fulfilled the initial work in an electric vehicle that may be ten years and then it can be removed and used for Energy Storage for renewables, so. But they still have to pay to replace that so whats the cost . A success it if you are looking to swap and vehicle electric battery at a big cost absolutely. How much would someone typically have to expect to pay . Again at £20,000 vehicle its probably four five grand for the battery its a huge chunk. To be fair though if you would to replace an engine its the same amount of money. Good point. Live and the battery is going to last longer originally it was a worry but now they find that the battery last longer than the car. The scene as assets rather than liability and that impacts right through to supply chain to use to ultimately disposal, because you do have to look at the whole life, can i congratulate jaguar the news today because it is fantastic and i think what illustrates when the simon reports that it was dwarfed in relation to volkswagen, but what the uk is good at is low volume high value engineering and develop a product like you see a jaguar, and aston martin, sal aston martin had their own factory right now and its spreading. 0k we have another question from dave who has to travel from aberdeen to norfolk and he finds the amount of time it takes to recharge the car is very inconvenient is there anything thatll be done about this . Its improving all the time as of right iiow convenience improving all the time as of right now convenience is a shortfall and drawback for electric vehicles if you are doing long distance. If youre around town, say you stay around aberdeen and are staying in the local area had the electric car is great but driving to north because a weakness for electric cars. No problems but norfolk is just a long way to get there and motor day driving is not a forte for them just been really for right now and suffer most people picture for a start on the car, right now its not the best option. Itll be though but not for another ten years. the best option. Itll be though but not for another ten years. I hope he is not making a trip every day. hope not i think he said a few times a year. Another question, im typing. We have had eric who got in touch on twitter and he wants to know if its safe to recharge your car in the rain stopped and love there are many myths like can you ta ke there are many myths like can you take it to a car wash its all crazy because thats exactly what they are damaged, the vehicle is totally safe and if that safe as any conventional proposition. It has to be because legislation has to be fulfilled in all of the things have to be in place before you go anywhere near the market, so yeah, some of these crazy stories and nets are just that, they are met. Who puts in about, i do not know. But i dont have time for them. We also had a question here from wants to know i think its a question for you roger, lots of people being encouraged to switch to electric vehicles. If the uk really going to be geared up if there is increased demand . Over many yea rs there is increased demand . Over many years now, the National Grid who understand how energy is made and distributed, they are quite confident about how the take up will happen. And indeed some of that development with a bigger vehicle park and batteries is an advantage again ifan park and batteries is an advantage again if an asset because they can be used to balance the grid, we can push the energy in and take it out. So theres a lot of dynamics to the shaft that are actually benefits over and above what a Combustion Engine vehicle is which is fairly sort of simplistic thing, and this is more sophisticated but in a good way. Not complex on my guideway. And thats positive. Itll depend on how quickly demand rises if Everyone Wants an electric car tomorrow, we will be in trouble, but we are currently 1 of new cars that are electric, we want to get about 100 by2040, electric, we want to get about 100 by 2040, we have 20 years to get there, and assuming its managed well, 95just had invested interest in making it work a set of government, but we need to see lots of effort to make it happen. Another one, dave has gotten in touch and againa one, dave has gotten in touch and again a question about charging, he says its a complicated cumbersome process every time he arrives to a new station he has to register himself as a user input in his debit or credit card details and he wants to know is there any way that can be simplified . Hopefully as he get better, like like the technologies, when things are new they are more complex and then we eventually work out better way forward, people co nve rg e out better way forward, people converge on a way of out better way forward, people converge on a way of doing it. Electric car charging has been an issue in terms of charging points in Different Companies in different systems and they different manufacturers with different plugs but we are getting there and again, its difficult at the moment
