Tens of thousands of people took to the streets to keep up the pressure on the countrys interim military rulers to hand power over to a civilian administration. The protests on sunday were the largest since a deadly raid by Security Forces on a protest camp outside the defence ministry, three weeks ago. Gareth barlow has more. The rallies across several cities were the largest since dozens were killed in a crackdown at the start ofjune. Despite troops being deployed and tear gas being fired, protesters continue to demand the Ruling Military Council hands power to a civilian led administration. Translation i felt the blood boiling in my veins so i had to come out tonight, i had to march, i had to march for everyone killed, i had to march for the martyrs that died, march for the girls that were raped, had to march to do something, anything. Translation i want to give a message to the military council. If you dont stop the nonsense, we wont leave you and we will take our rights back. But the military claimed they had to intervene during sundays protest to deal with an unidentified threat. Translation now, in front of the military medical centre and from the youth centre, there are snipers shooting at people. They have shot three members of the Security Forces and maybe five or six civilians. This is now. That is why we were upset and trying to get things under control. Those claims strongly rejected by protesters still mourning those killed in the military crackdown four weeks ago. Translation the military council must fall because it only brought us martyrs. We celebrated with the sound of bullets and with the blood of our martyrs. Despite an internet blackout and Security Forces blocking bridges, sundays protests were the biggest since the military took power. A display of strength by the people, another challenge to the ruling authorities. Gareth barlow, bbc news. Senior politicians in hong kong have been celebrating the moment the city returned to chinese rule 22 years ago. Led by chief executive carrie lam, and joined by officials from china, they attended a reception just in the last hour. Outside a flag raising ceremony was held at the harbour front. In her toast, carrie lam wished success to the motherland and to the stability and prosperity of hong kong. Away from this, though, the mood is quiet different crowds of activists gathering from early this morning are now in a peaceful stand off with police. Live now to our correspondent karishma vaswani. Welcome to you. A peaceful stand off now but there were some quite angry seems a little earlier. Yes, absolutely. Just down the street where you can see that the of some hundreds of protesters dressed in that unofficial black uniform that the pro democracy protesters have taken to wearing. You can hear them chanting is well behind me. It is a peaceful demonstration, may have to add, at this point, but earlier today there were clashes on the street, the main arterial road here in hong kong, between police and protesters. Police ordered the protesters. Police ordered the protesters to dispose, they said that some of them were carrying bricks. On our way down to this area we spoke to some of them and they said they were loosening up barricades, iron fences from the street, so they could use them as barricades to protect themselves. Annelise the people we spoke to said they had no intention of using those bricks for violent means. One thing is clear, they feel very strongly that today is the opportunity to demonstrate just how angry they are about the increasing influence of china in hong kong. They see that symbolised through the extradition bill, that controversial bill, that had it passed would have allowed the extradition of individuals in hong kong to Mainland China. They wanted want to completely withdrawn and the resignation of carrie lam and many of the protesters who were detained in earlier clashes earlier this month to be released to. Has a been any response from china over todays protests . Has there been . So far we havent heard any official response. Typically what you will see ina response. Typically what you will see in a situation like this is that meeting would like to ignore the demonstrations altogether. Having said that, however, laterthis afternoon we are expecting annual mites to take place that happens every year here marking the Handover Ceremony to Mainland China march. In previous years it has typically been an opportunity for demonstrators to show just been an opportunity for demonstrators to showjust how disenchanted and dissatisfied they are with the state of affairs in hong kong. This year takes a special significance and symbolism. Organisers say in previous protest this month there was Something Like 2 Million People out on the streets. The police say the figures much lower. Many are saying they expect numbers to swell this afternoon so they can really show how they feel about the fact that they believe their freedoms are about the fact that they believe theirfreedoms are being eroded under the one country two systems principle. Karishma vaswani in hong kong. Thank you. North korea has described sundays the meeting between donald trump and kim jong un as amazing. In a moment broadcast around the world mr trump walked across the border into the north from south korea shortly after meeting the north Korean Leader. The mr trump has now returned to the us, as critics dismiss the occasion as political theatre or a tv stunt. But mr trump is claiming to have brought peace to the korean peninsula. Lets go live to our correspondent Stephen Mcdonell who is in seoul. Stephen, nearly 2a hours on from this historic moment, what is the reaction now from the media in north korea, which are finally reporting on this, and south korea, as the news settles in . Well, here in seoul does a bit like the morning after a big party or something. People are thinking did that really happen yesterday . If thinking did that really happen yesterday . If there were under any illusions that this took place, newspapers have turned up to show them yes, it did happen. We have headlines saying what an historical moment this was. There is one newspaper. They will give you a look ata newspaper. They will give you a look at a couple of them. This one is the largest circulation from a very conservative newspaper here in south korea. This headline is talking about donald trump stepping onto north korean soil and also referring to the invitation to come to the white house from donald trump to kim jong un. And then here we have the english language daily, where a picture speaks a thousand words. No headline but just picture speaks a thousand words. No headline butjust this photo, as you can see. Quite a remarkable picture. They have just splashed out across the front page. So, yes, naturally the front page. So, yes, naturally the press is focusing a lot on that very historic moment when sitting United States president step across that frontier, shaking hands with the north Korean Leader. And, of course, in north korea, as you might expect, it is also receiving a lot of attention. The north korea newspapers have also splashed with it. Several pages worth of photos and headlines trumpeting this. This is exactly why some have criticised donald trump, because they are saying, you know, you have given that north Korean Leader this big propaganda opportunity without him moving any closer at all to denuclearisation. You can see how happy the north korean regime is with this by its coverage in the local press there. However, those who have praise donald trump have said at least it is dialogue, at least it is easing the tensions, and that means we are further away from war on the korean peninsula. Stephen mcdonald in seoul. Thank you. Lets brief you on some of the other stories making the news. Both williams sisters say they are available and willing to work with andy murray. It has been a phenomenal return from that hip shaving, the excruciating bone pain he had. A brilliant operation that has done well. So who knows . They think it is too early for him to return to the singles. I think. I have been looking at figures the prize money is huge. It is like to point to 5 million to each of the singles winners. When women have had parity since 2007 2. 25 million. It is incredible. Novak djokovic they want to meet. I nearly met him in dubai. At least seven people have been killed in sudan after tens of thousands returned to the streets to demand civilian rule. Lets stay with that now. Tomi olidapo is currently in nairobi and has the latest updates on the ongoing sudan mass protests. Welcome. When we spoke yesterday as the protest got under way, there was surprise at the sheer number on the streets and that did continue over the coming hours, didnt it . Yes, it did. Itjust wasnt in the capital city where people turned up, but also in several other cities across the country. They came out in the numbers, marching and chanting for a fall of the regime, the military regime. Then Security Forces fired tear gas and also live ammunition to disperse these protesters. But the military regime also says that there were snipers who targeted some of the police who we re who targeted some of the police who were guarding the procession, and also targeted some of the protesters. They have not given the details of who they think these snipers are, but when the protests we re snipers are, but when the protests were planned, the military did say that it thought that they would be some saboteurs taking part. And what progress, if any, on attem pts and what progress, if any, on atte m pts to and what progress, if any, on attempts to broker some kind of truce and talks . Well, the African Union has been the one spearheading these attempts to bring the Opposition Alliance and the military back together to the negotiating table. The military says it has accepted the rus proposal for these talks to go ahead, but the Opposition Alliance is not really brought about all responded to this. Matt au. Brought about all responded to this. Matt au. They have been focusing on the protests that were launched yesterday. So i think it will be a major challenge to bring these two sides again together and to get them to make concessions at the negotiating table. And other protests expected to continue . There is no clear word on whether these protests will continue or how they will carry on over the next few days, but i think its clear that the anger, the discontent among the public still remains despite the militarys attempts to suppress this kind of dissent, by switching off the internet and placing Security Forces on the streets. There is still that anger and people are still that anger and people are still calling for a civilian government to be put in place. Thank you for the update. The way in which the boys went around the batting, bowling and fielding, i thought the fielding was outstanding, the desire in the field, throwing, the catching, the run saving and everything was great and, yeah, the whole round performance was more complete than we have had so far. Hundreds of thousands of people have lined the streets of new york to watch a massive pride march, marking the 50th anniversary of riots that helped spark the modern gay rights movement. A smaller unofficial march has also been held. Its organisers claim they represent the true spirit of the movement. Our lgbt correspondent ben hunte sent us this report from manhatten. New york has always been a major destination for lgbt pride festivals. But this weekends events where their biggest yet. A message of inclusion and equality could be felt across the city. There has been true duelling pride parade marching through the streets. One with huge floats, Major Corporate sponsors and millions of people lining the streets. The other taking a com pletely streets. The other taking a completely stripped back approach. Many would not even recognise it as a modern lgbt pride parade. The team behind it reclaim pride were protesting the commercialisation of with home made banners, political chanting and a rally in central park. What we are seeing is they are co opting this very important activist holiday as a corporate platform for profits. We want to return it to its roots, which was a protest march put on by activists in the wake of the 1969 stone well rights. So, has pride become too commercial . Virgin ceo sir Richard Branson doesnt think it matters. |j think it is a start in the right direction. I think they are better than the companies that are doing nothing. While people debate whether pride has lost its message, it is worth remembering that neither of his weekends pride events here would be welcome in several cities in the United States and in many countries across the world. But as our entertainment correspondent lizo mzimba reports, one of the biggest receptions was for the veteran naturalist, sir david attenborough. This year is the first time glastonbury has taken action against single use plastics. No longer selling water in plastic bottles and banning many other plastic items. No surprise then that the festivals environmentally aware audience gave a huge reception to sir david attenborough, the man who inspired the plastics ban with an episode of blue planet ii. It was one in which we showed what plastic has done to the creatures that live in the ocean. Cheering. But of course, the main way people willjudge the success of the festival is through its music. Kylie minogue drew a massive audience for herfirst ever full glastonbury set. Cant get you out of my head. I came in like a wrecking ball. A successful glastonbury debut too for miley cyrus. Yesterday, felt so old, felt like i could die. While the cure closed the festival with a record equalling fourth headlining slot. Lizo mzimba, bbc news, glastonbury. Looks like a great event, doesnt it . Although a huge success, this year they only had 42 of acts as women. They have said they would like to get that to a 50 50 split. We are asking today, why are festivals finding it so hard to reach the 50 50 gender equality . This 20 says what matters is the quality of the music, not the gender of the performer. Uk forecasts coming up in a moment but first of all, well start off with a look at what has been an incredible week in europe. The new record of 46 beat the old jun record by five celsius and is now the highest temperature ever recorded in france. Cooler, fresh air removing and across the uk will be spreading in to europe, really moderating those temperatures significantly so the extreme heat wave is finally coming to an end. Here, most of the next few days are looking dry with sunshine. There will be a bit of rain at times across the north west of the country and if you are heading outside could get wet in scotland with low pressure nearby and you have a number of showers moving in, pushing across Northern Ireland into the far north of both england and wales. A mild start to monday, temperatures 11 to 14 mild start to monday, temperatures 11 to 1a degrees. This is how the weather chart looks for the start of the new week. I pressure to the west of the isles, a weather front slipping south bringing an area of the cloud and showers south across Northern Ireland into the far north of england and wales. For southern wales, the midlands, east anglia and southern counties, the cloud will be broken with fairly lengthy spells of sunshine. Quite a breezy day. Warmun sunshine. Quite a breezy day. Warmun sunshine in the south but it will feel cool where temperatures are a little disappointing across the very far north of scotland, and another reminder that summer is here. Wimbledon starts today. Dry day with sunny spells and that is how the weather should stay for the first week of wimbledon as well. Tuesday weatherwise, a few showers around but mainly limited to the north west of scotland. Elsewhere, pressure builds a little, we should see increasing amounts of sunshine across the country and temperatures generally into the high teens to low 20s, a little bit cool across the far north of scotland. A height of only 11 degrees with the risk of a few showers. Later in the week across scotland cloud will thicken further to bring the threat of rain of northern and Western Areas towards the end of the week. Further south across england and wales, the weather stays dry with temperatures in the low to mid 20s, getting a bit warmer by friday in london. Highs up to 24. That is your latest weather.
