Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me arejohn rentoul, the chief political commentator at the independent, and ruth lea, whos an economic adviser for the Arbuthnot Banking group. Lovely to have you both here. Jeremy hunt offers tax cuts in a package to keep britain open for business after brexit, says the front of the telegraph. The theme continues in the guardian, they say business groups have expressed anger afterjeremy hunt said he would tell people whose Companies Went bust after a no deal brexit that their sacrifice had been necessary. Kylie minogue is on the front page of the independent, for her performance at glastonbury, while the headline says cases of children with Mental Health problems have doubled. In the Financial Times its a photo of donald trump and kim jong un dominating the front page, after their historic meeting in the demilitarised zone. end tv licence scandal now mrs may the mirror has gordon brown demanding theresa may steps in to keep free tv licences for the over 75s. The times says the church of england is to issue its first set of digital commandments to combat cynicism and abuse on social media. labour tax raid on family homes the daily mail warns that the middle classes will be hit byjohn mcdonnells inheritance tax reforms. John, the telegraph and it isjeremy hunt. Turbocharging the economy and admitting that a no deal brexit would be disastrous and disagreeing with ruth here. You cannot do that in effect he is saying a no deal brexit would cause such damage we would have to pump in an emergency 20 billion in tax cuts just to keep the economy afloat which doesnt sound like a brilliant advert for his tough approach to brexit which he is trying to sell to conservative party members. Brexit which he is trying to sell to conservative party memberslj brexit which he is trying to sell to conservative party members. I do not totally agree with what john says because i take the view that the economy has been remarkably resilient even though there has been uncertainty with brexit. I personally take the view that the impact ofa personally take the view that the impact of a no deal exit would be fairly minimal on the economy. Possibly some disruption but basically the economy has such resilience i think it would see its way through. I do not really see any turbocharging of the economy would be required. But boris is promising to do it as well. He is splashing money around like there is no tomorrow. I do not disagree with you but i do not entirely agree with either when it comes to the economic policy. What are they getting wrong . £20 billion is a substantial amount of money, 1 of gdp and if they are seriously going to be cutting taxes, which is a good idea in itself, they should be set that it is appropriate and, when you have full employment, the big question is, do you really give the economy a big push . I suggest not. And it would be better under the circumstances, when you are in these situation, i do not think a major physical burst is very sensible or required. But they are in election hearing mode. Is using this sort of language because he is the business candidate . Which is fairenough. If the business candidate . Which is fair enough. If you want to cut corporation tax, which might cost 30 billion quid but whether he would do that in one go or over a period of 5 that in one go or over a period of 5 six years is hard to say. Lets be frank about it, this is election not a serious budget. You were shaking your head. Lets turn to the guardian because it is the same story but a slightly different angle. Jeremy hunt saying that a no deal brexit is a price worth paying. I think i disagree. I think reese is far too complacent about the effects of imposing tariffs. Realistic. The effects of imposing ta riffs realistic. The effects of imposing tariffs trading in the eu is going to give a huge amount of damage to the economy and jeremy hunt knows that which is why he gets into trouble with these interviews where he has to say why he wants to inflict the least damage amount. At least hes honest about the damage. Boris says it will not happen. We are both optimistic people. But optimism is not good enough in these circumstances. I concede that there are some british experts that will face big tariffs. They are mainly agricultural and i looked at the figures and our agricultural exports are not huge and you could easily compensate front for that. The wto tariffs . If youre talking about tariffs . If youre talking about tariff levels, on agricultural products, they are high, iaccept that. Under those circumstances you can see them being affected but they are very small numbers, quite honestly so why not just compensate the farmers. It boggles the mind about why we still have confusion about why we still have confusion about this. The numbers not clear. The tariff levels are pretty clear. Well, you know how bad it is going to be. How can you pretend it does not matter. Sizing things up. Boris johnson and his team says it is about time we started showing some love to the Public Sector. They only just realised this electioneering. He is saying Public Sector workers have not been rewarded. When you compare benefits for the Public Sector they do pretty well. And they go on about Public Sector pay has been kept low but private sector pay has not been rising at a brilliant level this isjust has not been rising at a brilliant level this is just electioneering. Salaries have not been rising. You say the economy has been doing well but. People do not believe austerity is over, despite theresa may saying so, so this is Boris Johnson trying to inject a bit of your optimism into the situation. Which is misplaced. Absolutely. What do you make of this . Labour tax rate on family homes. This isjohn mcdonald, the shadow chancellor, is looking at. Is interested in, sorry, replacing inheritance tax with a lifetime gives tax. People on the left of been interested in this for a long time because inheritance tax does not raise a very large amount of money and it would be fairer, it is sad, if you taxed the beneficiaries of inheritance tax but obviously more people would pay and the fault it would be highly controversial. Probably. Not surprised about this because the labour party at the time of the 2017 general election manifesto was talking about very big increases in public spending and they would have to pay them away or another. They do not think so, they think they can borrow it all because it is a free money. The idea that labour party is not going to increase taxes. Well they are going to increase taxes. 125,000, they are going to increase taxes. 125, 000, thats they are going to increase taxes. 125,000, thats nothing, your pa rents, 125,000, thats nothing, your parents, the house. Everybody is going to be included in this and people are struggling as it is. Amounting to a total of more than 125,000 over a lifetime instead of the current threshold which is 475,000. Giving a child a car. It isa 475,000. Giving a child a car. It is a very expensive car that would affect a lot of people. It would ta ke affect a lot of people. It would take in almost all property whereas at the moment it is mostly the top and property in london. This is the labour party for you and i am not a memberof the Labour Labour Party for you and i am not a member of the labour party. Laughter. Well, theres a surprise. It would never happen. Even second place in the korean peninsula. Donald trump making history. He is a great man. A great man he has also been talking to the chinese. I think this is actually a good. A good strategy on his behalf because he does keep contact with mr kim of north korea and he wants north korea to get rid of it nuclear weapons. Whether that will happen, in the near future or perhaps not the near future, but the fact they are talking is a plus. Better to talk than not talk. Did you believe what you are saying that, in terms of. This isjust a show what you are saying that, in terms of. This is just a show they are putting on. But it is quite interesting for the president of the worlds largest. Well, most powerful democracy to be visiting north korea. I mean, north korea is a remarkable state, closed society, paranoid, developing these weapons, you know, it might work. It didnt work last time. I doubt if it is going to work last time but at least its worth trying. Were going to turn back to the times, something that you think is going to work . Do not tweet in anger. Guidelines for social media. Speak to others online as it was speak to them in person. I should think it would get worse. The guidelines are quite sensible, actually. I was imagining moses coming down from the mountain with his tablet, with his ipad, and his family social media commandments on it. Laughter. You can understand what they are trying to do but look at the timing. We should have come out a long time ago. We are past this. I dont know. Out a long time ago. We are past this. Idont know. Im out a long time ago. We are past this. I dont know. Im on twitter all the time. Here is a test. Looking at this, they are setting out guidelines. Nicola mendelson, archbishop welby, he will be in a 0 a tomorrow, the church of england. They do not mention anything about this. Dont they . Archbishop welby is an interesting chap. I sometimes do see him on twitter. But if they wa nt to do see him on twitter. But if they want to be so claimed then, you think they would be shouting about this but there is nothing perhaps they do not know about it yet. I cannot say i am terribly interested in this historic but it is a super story and well chosen by the bbc but lam not story and well chosen by the bbc but i am not very interested. Who is going to take these points on board and have they come too late . Nobody is going to listen, im afraid. Actually, through painful experience, i have sort of learned that you can get entered toxic space. Who is learning anything new from this . It too late. It is not the churchs fault. It is there to guide people morally so this is jolly good. Nothing they are going to read on line i can tell you that, its not there do we have time for one more . Yes, we do. In the mirror, the free tv licence for the over 75. Gordon brown is back defending his free tv licences and for theresa may to spend more money which she doesnt have. So she can preserve his legacy. What do you make of this . The fact that it will be taken away . This . The fact that it will be taken 7 i this . The fact that it will be taken away . I think the point is the bbc is saying it is going to be means tested. I cannot really see any big problem on that. It is very unpopular. I am not far off, you know. I think the country has bigger problems, next spring, when the chancellor. It is ultimate now. They have changed that. Is that after the brexit deadline. It could be october. We have more on our plate. Neither review our spring chickens. I think we fizzled
