Good, good, good. Looking at the weather now and we have been talking about the high temperatures. Sarah will let us know what is coming up here. Good morning to you. We will not see temperatures as high as they have been across Central Europe. We have something of a mini heatwave lasting a few days. Yesterday temperatures got to 30 degrees. Today we are likely to see highs of up to 34 celsius. It will be different parts of the uk that said heat and humidity. Scotland was hottest yesterday. Today that here will be concentrated across southern and south eastern parts of england, in particular, with a southerly breeze lifting the temperatures also lifting the temperatures also lifting the temperatures also lifting the humidity as well. Not everywhere will stay dry. We have showers in the west, particularly affecting Northern Ireland and scotland. Temperatures here typically in the low to mid 20s but for england and wales, 33 or 34 degrees possible. High levels of uv and pollen out there as well. We have thunderstorms which will rattle their way across Northern England and scotland through the course of the night. Some gusty winds and hail around some of those thunderstorms. Then a clearer and slightly fresh air works then a clearer and slightly fresh airworks in then a clearer and slightly fresh air works in behind that. In the north and west it wont be quite as hot and muggy as it was last night. It was the south east 17 degrees or so. Still halting holding onto the hot and humid effort time. If you are not a fan of heat and humidity youll be pleased to know that tomorrow will be a fresher feeling day and there will be a mix of sunshine and showers. The heat we have got with us today gets pushed away towards the east as it does so across much of europe as we move through the day tomorrow. This cold front introduces more of a westerly influence to the weather as we had through tomorrow. It will still be a pleasa nt through tomorrow. It will still be a pleasant enough day but it wont be as hot as it will be today. We will see some showers initially across Northern Ireland and the west of scotland, they work their way into parts of Northern England and north wales into the afternoon. Further south and east you are likely to stay dry again with plenty of sunshine around. Temperatures doing pretty well tomorrow, up to 25 in the warmest spots in the south east. For many of us the high teens or low 20s. Much more typical of this time of year. Not a washout, still some sunshine around. Heading through sunday night into monday we have a big area of High Pressure towards the south west, low pressure clearing to the north west. That leaves more of a northerly influence of the weather north east. Monday into tuesday, it will be mostly dry. Afairamount of into tuesday, it will be mostly dry. A fair amount of data around. One or two showers. Still some sunny spells. Nothing like today. Nina and roger. Our little heatwave has been a little ripple yesterday and today. It will cool down. However, just before you go, bring us up to date with the situation in europe. Records have been tumbling there already, havent they . That is right. We have seen very high temperatures across many parts of europe. The temperature records have been absolutely tumbling. In pollen, the czech republic, germany, we have seen the highest everjune temperature, but in france, in particular, france temperatures have reached 45. 9dc. That is not only beaten the all time previous record of the highest temperature in france, but it has beaten it by quite some way, almost two degrees. The previous record stood at 44. 1 celsius. The new record we saw yesterday, all Time Temperature record, temperatures reached 45. 9dc. Extremely hot weather yesterday stop by scorching. As the records continue to be broken there are the inevitable questions around the extent to which it is linked to climate change. That is right. Most summers in Central Europe we see periods of hot weather. We do see heat waves. But this particular heatwave is very extreme. And as the climate is warming these heat waves are superimposed on top of that warming climate. They are likely to become more extreme as we head into the future. In fact, temperatures globally have raised by about one degree since the preindustrial era. Temperatures like this could become more common. The average temperature certainly rising as we had on through the future. Climate scientists are in agreement now that we are likely to see more of these events happening. There will become more common as well. Interesting that you see more of the same. Talking about this, this has been drawn up from the sahara, this particular hot weather, hasnt it, are we likely to see this as an increasingly recurring pattern or not . We are likely to see heatwave is becoming more extreme and potentially more common as we had on into the future. The Climate Science is in its relatively early days. We are in agreement that things are going to get more extreme into the future, but certainly over the next week or so we are expecting things to come down. We have had those record breaking temperatures but as we look ahead, today is certainly another very hot day. We see temperatures again in the high 30s, early 40s across parts of france was again. Not quite as hot today further east across europe. As we had through tomorrow that heat is pushing its way eastwards. It is parts of germany and pollen that will see the most extensive high temperatures. We could be the all Time Temperature record in germany tomorrow as well then as we move through the course of this coming week it looks like eventually things will turn to something a little more normal for things will turn to something a little more normalfor the time things will turn to something a little more normal for the time of year. Temperatures generally back into the 20 through the second half of this coming week. This particular heatwave, although extreme, is not going to be very long lived over the next few days. Roger and nina. Thank you so much. There will be on into a coming up this week. You at those temperatures and it is easy to feel quite envious, but imagine 45 degrees day after day. It is astonishing. Iceland was the place to be. 12 degrees in the capital. Much more bearable. Youre up to date with the weather situation. It is going to be hot. This 20 past seven. This was the main story at the end of the day yesterday. The coroner at the inquests into the deaths of eight people who were killed in the London Bridge terror attack says Security Services should not be held responsible for failing to prevent it. The ruling comes despite criticisms about a lack of barriers, at whats been described as a particularly vulnerable location. We can speak now to mike granatt, the former head of the civil contingencies department. You have been heavily involved in the way Government Agencies can and do prepare for extreme situations like this. There was criticism yesterday about the fact that barriers had been put up, despite this being a vulnerable location. The head of operations that we were not to know that this was coming. He was right . Well, hindsight is a great thing, isnt it . Clearly if the barriers had been that the people on the bridge would have been much safer. That is not to say that the people who planned the attack would not have done something there or somewhere else. That set, there had been a warning there had been earlier attacks, so it was a vulnerable location and it would have been relatively easy to get the barriers up quickly. Barriers can be put into place very quickly, as you say, if people think theyre necessary. As a recall, the commander made the decision said there was no event there that would have been an obvious target, a specific event. And there had been no warnings. So having identified the site, as one that could have been used for an attack, they looked at the risk of it happening and decided the risk was low. But fortu nately decided the risk was low. But fortunately turned out to be wrong. Because of the way that london has evolved as a city, it is higgledy piggledy, that is part of its charm, how do you go about making sure it doesnt happen again . How do you protect such a density like that . There are a lot of things you have to do to protect people in a city. Youre quite right. London has been there for 1000 years or more. The waiters laid out reflects that. In the mixture people and traffic the way it has laid out. It allows you to them as a terrace, weaponising vehicle and used against people, it means you have to take certain precautions. I think we will see more barriers in places where there are crowds at terrorist. There will be more barriers next arose. You can try to prevent terrorism arising, which is the prevent programme, preventing radicalisation, the second thing you can do is train people to act in circumstances that help protect themselves and to look out for those who might be likely to cause an attack and report them. The thing you can do, of course. Mike has lost his microphone. He is going to back on. Hopefully we will hear him shortly. It is there wills longest microphone. Goodness me. I am going to hold it. I think it is safer. 0k, good. Im not sure where i got two. The point is the best thing you can do is try to prevent terrorism arising and secondly you can look at the architecture of the place and thirdly, but not least, you can help people reject themselves. A city like london is or was going to be vulnerable. Most big crowded places in the world are like that. We can keep our eyes open for terrorists and report things that are suspicious. Looking back at what happened and looking at the coroners decision, it was the lack of information coming forward from people who were close to the terrorist that actually lead to whatever decisions there were not to follow as closely as they might have been. That is one of the criticisms. We know that the ringleader, khuram butt was known to authorities. The pa rents of butt was known to authorities. The parents of the youngest for them so that those red flags were unacceptable. Why was he still allowed to be a large . Welcome i think you have to look at the context of this. The people who have been affected by this tragedy will never forget what has happened and they will always ask questions and we have to accept that and listen to them. The other side of this is that them. The other side of this is that the Security Service and the police are watching literally hundreds possibly a one time thousands of people and assessing each and every one of the people they are looking at as one of the people they are looking atasa one of the people they are looking at as a risk. Some would obviously bea at as a risk. Some would obviously be a higher risk than others. They will focus their limited resources im inevitably limited, however iupati, on those people others will get slightly less attention. However you put it. That is a process that needs co ordination, careful review every time Something Like this happens, and you can be quite sure that the day after this event the postmortem started into what happened in terms of operational failings what happened in terms of operationalfailings or what happened in terms of operational failings or failings in Decision Making about protection. Whatever the reasons behind it, utterly, utterly devastating for the families. Thank you forjoining us this morning. Its a pleasure. Breaking the 20 mile per hour speed limit near schools is particularly important for the safety of children, with just the fear of accidents putting many parents off allowing their kids to travel to school alone. The metropolitan police and transport for london have now enlisted the help of school children, as a way to encourage motorists to change their behaviour. Dougal shaw reports. If you get caught speeding near this Primary School in south london you might be in for a surprise. The police will tell you that instead of facing a fine or points on your license, you can instead agree to be questioned by a panel of Primary School pupils about your actions. Which is exactly what this motorist decided to do. Do you have any points on your license . No, totally clean. Do you realise the dangers you are putting yourself and others in . They didnt realise they were speeding, didnt realise it was a 20 until i was pulled over. He didnt realise the danger. So let us tell him some. What are they . realise the danger. So let us tell him some. What are they . If you have someone there is the potential of them dying. So how did he take the judges criticism. It was a shock that made it a reality, that is official. It didnt realise questions i was going to get. It was, yeah, it may be so different. The idea is to enforce the 20 mph speed limit to protect children at school. The police dont offer this option to drivers who they think are significantly broken the speed limit. In this 90 minute session, 32 motorists were stopped. All of them chose to face the children rather than accept a traditional penalty. It was very fun, because they are random people and you just get to tell them often they cant do anything to you because the police are there. To tell them off and it is fine. It is quite surprising that there are that many people speeding around a school. The metropolitan police and transport for london are hoping to roll out the scheme across the capital. You shouldnt need an eight year old to explain this to you. The fact that these kids are having to come out and do this or to make you rather ashamed. Importantly, though, make you rather ashamed. Importa ntly, though, the make you rather ashamed. Importantly, though, the final act in this confrontation is always one of reconciliation. Do we forgive him . Yes. We forgive him and hope you will learn from that. |j him . Yes. We forgive him and hope you will learn from that. I will now, for sure. Dougal shaw, bbc news. Good on them getting stuck in. Hello and welcome to newswatch with me, samira ahmed. Was borisjohnsons noisy domestic argument with his girlfriend a matter of Public Interest or none of the medias business . And with broadcasting a photograph of a father and child who drowned trying to enter the United States gratuitous and intrusive . Concerns about intrusion and taste and decency around reporting private lives define todays newswatch. It was saturdays Guardian Newspaper that broke our first story, that of borisjohnsons row with his girlfriend recorded by a neighbour but bbcjournalists followed it up extensively during the day. Reporter mrjohnson, why were Police Outside your house last night . He has been accused of hiding from scrutiny, avoiding detailed answers about his policies on brexit and tax. We meet in dark days for our party. Today the questions were more personal as Boris Johnson faced hundreds of conservative Party Members and was asked why police had been called to his flat in the early hours of friday morning. I dont think they want to hear about that kind of thing. Unless i am wrong. But the judgments of bbc news, along with much of the news media, was that people did want to know more. It featured prominently in the News Coverage of the conservative leadership contest for the next few days and would also brought up on mondays panorama. Carefully rationing his tv appearances and interviews may only have sharpened their medias appetite for stories like this. Police called in by a neighbour after a domestic row at the home that he shares with his partner and it all being unhelpfully leaked to the guardian. It is all adding to the questions about borisjohnsons character. Would making him the pm amount to a gamble . That night, Laura Kuenssberg spoke to borisjohnson, asking what happened in his girlfriends flat, and about a photograph of the two of them looking happy which had emerged the previous day in newspapers. He was not forthcoming. You seem to care about your privacy so much of that yesterday a photographer or someone with a phone just happened to stumble upon you in the middle of the sussex countryside. Are you not trying to have this both ways . Ijust do not get into this stuff and there is a good reason because i think what people want to know is what is going on with this guy, when it comes to trust or when it comes to character, does he deliver . Some viewers thought all this attention paid to mrjohnsons private life was unwarranted. Sharon taylor contacted us over the weekend to say on monday, on monday, joan adams wrote and venetia tester reacted to the interview like this meanwhile, tracy mason recorded her thoughts for us on camera. I dont care about what happens behind closed doors in their private life because it happens to us all and we dont need to hear about that as long as they can do the job that they are being paid to do. Thats all we want, we want to know what they are going to do and how they are going to make it happen. Thats all we are really interested in. As was the case last week, our requests for an interview with someone from bbc news were declined. Instead, they gave us this statement but we have also heard from many of mrjohnsons supporters and others who believe this is a private matter and not relevant to his leadership bid. We will continue to report on the conservative leadership contest impartially, offering Detailed Analysis of the policies and views advocated by the remaining two candidates. Do let us know your thoughts on what we are covering this week or on any aspect of bbc news. Details on how to contact us at the end of the programme. Four years ago, a photograph of a three year old syrian boy aylan kurdi, who drowned trying to reach the greek island of kos went around the world. Will about the debate of migration into europe. Oscar, the young father, had hoped to earn enough money in the us to build a house. His body and that of his daughter valeria were found in the rio grande, which separates mexico and texas. They had apparently given up hope of reaching the us through legal means. Was it necessary or appropriate for the bbc to broadcast the photograph, as it went on to do . Jill corin thought not, asking David Keeling objected to the picture being shown on the bbcs news website and a twitter user called becky had this to say we also received this video on the subject from karen hingston. I was absolutely disgusted whilst watching the bbc news on wednesday the 26th of june. The story headline was about a migrant father and daughter trying to cross a river into texas. The image shown was of the father and daughter face down in the river, drowned. Was this really appropriate at any time, let alone at 6pm during family prime time viewing . We wanted to discuss those points with someone from bbc news but that 00 55 20,829 2147483052 04 25,130 wasnt possible and they gave us 2147483052 04 25,130 4294966103 13 29,430 this statement
