President trump says he is imposing more sanctions on iran to stop it developing nuclear weapons. But he says military action is still on the table. Iranian forces shot down an american surveillance drone on thursday. Mr trump then ordered three air strikes in response. But he says he called them off with minutes to spare because too many people would have died. He told reporters its now up to iran to stop the tensions escalating further. If the leadership of iran behaves badly, then it is going to be a very, very bad day for them, but hopefully they are smart and hopefully they really care for their people and not themselves and hopefully we can get iran back to an economic track that is fantastic, where they are a really wealthy nation which would be a wonderful thing. All those things i want to do but if they are going to be foolish, that is never going to happen. Our correspondent Chris Buckler is in washington. What was mr trump trying to achieve with his comments today . He has been trying to do two things. On one hand you could argue he is trying to reach out, talking to the iranians about what the economy could be and the idea that they could be talks between him and the iranian leadership if that was possible, but at the same time he is threatening of dire consequences if there are further attacks in the gulf. On the one hand you could argue he is doing his best to try and build relationships, but the problem is that many in the white house are concerned that they could be further attacks in the gulf. It remains not just one of the worlds biggest and most important trading routes but also a centre of International Concern and as a result, President Trump has had to accept that there we re trump has had to accept that there were people inside the white house, including his National Security advisor who are pushing for the strikes to send a message to tehran and there is an argument that if he continues to say this one hand, i will try to reach out and the other hand i will threaten you with strikes, that he is sending a mixed message as opposed to a clear warning. Iran hasnt responded to those comments but how do you think they will be reacting behind the scenes . They will be reacting behindthescenes . They have made entirely clear that they dont want to have any part in talking to president trombone negotiations or discussions as long as american sanctions remain in place. The president is now saying that there will be further sanctions in place. It does give you this idea that iran is going to become increasingly frustrated. There is also another thing happening which is very important as the week goes on, and thatis important as the week goes on, and that is the fact that tehran has made clear that it will breach the Iran Nuclear Deal is the week goes on because it is going to get to the point where it has stockpiled more enriched uranium than it is allowed to. That again puts pressure on that record and by doing that, you could argue that they are trying to put pressure on those still part of the agreement, the us walked away from it, but europe and other countries that are allied to the us are still a part of that Iran Nuclear Deal and you could argue that tehran is using that to try and put pressure on them to try and force the us to ease sanctions which have caused real problems for the country. You mentioned the sanctions, will they have an effect on relations are will iran have expected those all along . In some ways they will have expected it but you can certainly argue that it but you can certainly argue that it is not going to help relations. Certainly there are other people within the iranian authorities, for example there was a spokesman for the armed forces who were threatening that if a bullet is fired towards iran, it could go on to more fire. Those are the kind of threats, sanctions will not be taken well and there is this question about what iran will do next. Theyve humanly denied that they we re theyve humanly denied that they were not responsible for those attacks on tankers but that the americans believe they were and that is consent that they could be further action that iran is not happy with how america is acting and what President Trump is saying. Ive been speaking to the bbcs tom bateman, whos in fujairah in the united arab emirates. I asked him for his thoughts on how President Trump had pharased his comments towards iran. I think what we got from donald trump was something of a mixed message, the kind of thing perhaps we have been used to. Almost like it was being delivered with an olive branch in one hand and a pistol in the other, because he said that on the one hand he felt he could be best friends with the iranians if they would comply with his version of nuclear disarmament, but he said if there continues to be a ramping up of tensions or if there is conflict in the region, he said that it would bring an obliteration. After those events here a couple of days ago, where that us drone was shut down and donald trump revealed he was perhaps moments from retaliatory strikes but stood it down because he was worried about any iranian loss of life, i think we now have an atmosphere where there is more rhetoric, there is more discussion but perhaps a willingness between the two sides a little bit more to engage again, but the reality is things here remain pretty tense in the gulf. There is always the danger though with donald trump, isnt there, tom, when he says things like iran would be obliterated in the case of a war, that he is going to escalate tensions, especially when he is speaking off script. Yeah and i think one of the characteristics we have become used to is a sense of unpredictability about him and perhaps it has played to his advantage in some cases in the past, but he is somebody we know is preoccupied with his portrayal at times and he referred to that straightaway today on the lawn of the white house, by saying that people were now trying to say he is a dove, whereas before they were saying he is a warmonger. He said that he is neither, that he was actuallyjust applying common sense when it came to his decision over those events in the gulf here. I think we have to remember the wider context to all of this, because on sunday, there will be a british ministerial visit to tehran and the british, i think, among the issues of discussion undoubtedly will be a demand by the iranians for a continuation or at least a degree of certainty about the desire that the punishing us sanctions are mitigated. The europeans have a mechanism which would allow European Countries to trade with iran but it hasnt kicked in yet. The iranians desperately want that and next week, they will, they have said, will technically breach an element of the nuclear deal. All of that designed to ramp up pressure notjust on the americans, but particularly in this case on the europeans, so that will take place tomorrow and all of that in an environment of heightening volatility here in the gulf. The two remaining contenders in the race to become the next british Prime Minister borisjohnson and jeremy hunt have been making their pitch for the job at the first of 16 meetings with conservative Party Members. Boris johnson was the first to speak, but he avoided answering questions about why the police were called to the flat he shares with his partner on thursday night. Heres our political correspondent, vicky young. Have you ruined your chances of becoming Prime Minister, mrjohnson . Mrjohnson, why were Police Outside your house last night . Hes been accused of hiding from scrutiny. Avoiding detailed answers about his policies on brexit and tax. I cannot hide it from you that we meet in dark days for our party and i have never known us to be down at 17 points in the polls. Today the questions were more personal. As borisjohnson faced hundreds of conservative Party Members and was asked why police had been called to his flat in the early hours of friday morning. I dont think they want to hear about that kind of thing. Unless im wrong. I think, forgive me, i think what they want to hear is what my plans are for the country and for our party. Police were called to the flat mrjohnson shares with his with his girlfriend, carrie symonds, after neighbours reported hearing an angry row and were concerned about her welfare. A neighbour passed on a recording to the guardian newspaper. Its reported a woman can be heard screaming and saying, get off and, get out of my flat the metropolitan police told the bbc there was no cause for police action. So what about questions of character . Would mrjohnson answer that . Does a persons private life. Booing dont boo. No, no, dont boo the great man. When he answers this question i will move on. Does a persons private life have any bearing on their ability to discharge the office of Prime Minister . Well, look, ive tried to give my answer pretty exhaustively. On brexit he said he was determined to take the uk out of the eu by october the 31st. What i said was that leaving on october the 31st was, my words were eminently feasible, which was taken to mean i wasnt ioo determined to do it. Eminently feasible means it is not only that we are going to do it, that it is possible. Up next foreign secretary jeremy hunt. He campaigned to remain during the referendum. Now he wants to lead a pro brexit party, so could he be trusted to deliver . If we got to the 31st of october and the eu have not shown any willingness to negotiate a better deal, that can get through the house of commons, that is not going to trap us in the customs union, then myjudgment is that weighing those difficult options up, the Political Risk of no brexit is far worse than the economic risk of no deal. And what about his character . Did he have the charisma and steel to be Prime Minister . Some people would say he is too nice. I think it is possible to be very polite and very tough. And i think my track record shows, you know, some very difficult industrial disputes that i had at the department of health. The advantage of the politeness is that people will talk to you, but by golly, i hope they dont underestimate you, because im going to get that deal. There will be 15 or more of these hustings before conservative members choose our next Prime Minister. Plenty of time for more questions. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Polling stations have officially closed in mauritania, a country marking its first democratic transfer of power since independence from france in 1960. President mohamed ould abdel aziz seized power in a coup in 2008, but he has agreed to step down and abide by a two term limit of office. Six candidates are running to replace him. Three suspected al Shabab Militants have been killed after they attacked a police camp in kenyas Eastern County of garissa, close to the border with somalia. The alqaeda linked group has carried out attacks and kidnappings in kenya, vowing retribution for the countrys involvement with amisom a 20,000 Strong African Union force helping to support the government in somalia. Hundreds of climate activists have entered a huge coal mine in northwest germany as part of a protest against global warming. 20,000 campaigners from 17 countries have also been carrying out acts of civil disobedience around the nearby city of aachen in the past few days. The protest at the mine saw activists storm the 48 kilometre site before being stopped by police. Anti russian protesters in georgia have held a third day of demonstrations. Thousands of people gathered in front of the Parliament Building in the centre of the capital tbilisi calling russia an occupier state and mocking president vladimir putin. The protests were sparked by a russian mp addressing the Parliament Earlier in the week. In response to the protests russia has announced a ban on flights to and from georgia citing security concerns. The kremlin decree attracted criticism from russian tour operators. Sri lanka has extended a state of emergency imposed after the Easter Sunday suicide bombings that killed more than 250 people. The measure which has already been in place for two months gives powers to the security agencies to detain and interrogate suspects without court orders. Asanga abeyagoonasekra who heads a Defence Ministry run think tank explains why the government took this decision. I think the complexity of the attack as well as the magnitude, this is the largest attack ever to happen in sri lanka by a terrorist group, and it is right for the president to extend because if you look at the amount of work that has been done in the security sector, in terms of improving the security environment of sri lanka by the military forces, has been quite a success i would say. The first cell has been completely dismantled, has been arrested, the members and also you can see a tremendous improvement in the Sri Lankan Security sector right now. So it happened in about 60 days, two months and the country has bounced back, i would say, to a degree, a certain degree. Stay with us on bbc world news, still to come a nail biting finish in the cricket world cup, as afghanistan comes close to the upset of the tournament but were beaten by india byjust eleven runs. This is bbc world news today. The latest headlines President Trump announces more sanctions against iran and warns military action is still an option. The frontrunner to become britains next Prime Minister borisjohnson refuses to answer questions about police being called to the home he shares with his partner. The Trump Administration has released details of a fifty billion Dollar Initiative for the middle east. It calls for a Global Investment fund to reform the Palestinian Economy and link it to those of arab neighbours. The plan which would only be implemented after a middle east political agreement is to be presented next week by President Trumps son in law Jared Kushner at an International Conference in bahrain, and hes been speaking ahead of that announcement. The plan would invest about 50 billion in the region. It would create a millionjobs in billion in the region. It would create a million jobs in the west bank and gaza, take their Unemployment Rate to single digits. More than half goes to the west bank and gaza and then what we also want to do is stimulatejordan, egypt and lebanon because if you can get that whole region to lift, and israels economy is doing well but if you integrate everything and get a quickerflow of goods, integrate everything and get a quicker flow of goods, people, and then people are able to invest in education and infrastructure and all the different areas that are necessary in industry instead of billets and munitions and war, then i think that will lead to a big increase in investment in the area. The political side and the economic side are two very robust efforts and to digest both of them at one time would be very hard, so it was necessary to break them up so the question is which one do you put first . Are thought was it was better to put the economic plan first, it is less controversial, lets get people to study, give feedback, all agree what that will look like as a peace agreement. It is an extensive document, something that i think will make people look at this differently and hopefully bring people to the table, to start having a discussion. A British Foreign Office Minister is going to iran on sunday to call for an urgent de escalation of tensions in the region. The situation also has a bearing on the case of Nazanin Zagari ratcliffe, a british iranian woman imprisoned in iran on charges of spying. Both she and her husband are on Hunger Strike in protest over her treatment. Richard ratcliffe is camped outside the Iranian Embassy in london and spoke to us about the diplomatic tensions. Certainly increased tensions are never good for us, certainly we watch the news closely and we would be worried if things get too far, so im glad the minister will be trying to lobby both for the de escalation of tensions and a chance for him to talk about nazanins case. She is still where she was, she is still in the general ward with the women. Some of the women are checking she is ok and certainly the clinic is starting to worry and keep checking on her. She was off to see the head of the prison clinic and they keep wanting to put her on a drip which she has refused to do. We are waiting to see what the response is from the iranian authorities. Day eight is getting tough. I am sitting down, i am getting tired and slower in thinking. Half a Million Pounds of government funding has been made available for Community Events all over the uk, to celebrate members of the Windrush Generation and their families. I dont need nobody. It is hoped these extraordinary stories will help us remember their valuable contribution. All i need is you. Adina campbell, bbc news. Good evening. Its been a while since ive been able to say this, but a lovely start to the weekend for many. Most places were dry. Most places had the sunshine as well and skies a little bit like this. But over the next few days, were going to see a few changes. It will get humid in a few areas but could also turn quite stormy particularly across parts of england, wales, and eastern scotland before later in the week, the sunshine returns and the temperatures really will start to shoot up. Now bringing about the change for the next few days is the proximity of this area of low pressure which is spinning towards us. High pressure has been with us to start the weekend and it will be to a certain degree through the night and into tomorrow keeping most places dry. Will be some thicker clouds but some patchy rain into northern scotland. And then later in the night, the isles of scilly, West Cornwall could turn increasingly wet and increasingly breezy. But for most, partly clear skies and staying dry with temperatures roughly around the 10 12 degree mark. Now, as you go into sunday, it should be a bright start for many. The main exception initially will be the far north of scotland patchy rain in the mainland and then rain toward western cornwall. But that wetter weather will spread across parts of cornwall, wales, South West England and into Northern Ireland during the afternoon. A few isolated, maybe thundery showers across the highlands of scotland but much of scotland, good part of england though, staying dry. Morning sunshine giving way to cloudy conditions turning very humid in the south. And as humidity increases, the threat of thunderstorms increases as we go into sunday night. Particularly across parts of wales, into the midlands, and northern england. Now, rainfall amounts will vary quite widely but we could see up to 50 mm, two inches of rain in one or two spots. That could cause some flash flooding in places certainly through the night and into the early hours of monday, the worst of those storms and as we creep into monday, eastern scotland could see some heavy and persistent rain. Still the chance of the odd rumble of thunder but its just the sheer persistence of it accompanied by some other cool easterly winds which will continue to blow that rain in. Still some heavy rain across the far north of england, particularly north east. Elsewhere, isolated showers in Northern Ireland, england, and wales. The morning cloud, when it breaks up, it is going to feel increasingly humid with temperatures in the mid to upper 20s. Still in the teens across some parts of scotland. So, there you go through monday night into tuesday, the rain is across northern scotland but through monday night into tuesday, more thundery downpours could return. Pinpointed exactly where they could be but uncertain at the moment. But certainly for parts of england, some torrential storms possible and as i said, it gets even hotter and even more humid as we go through the rest of the week. Bye for now. This is bbc world news, the headlines. President trump says the us will introduce more sanctions against iran and warns military action is still an option as tensions continue to escalate between the two nations.
