Slumped or shrank at headingley meaning life gets much harderfor the hosts now. Good morning, all quiet on the weather front, at least for today. It isa weather front, at least for today. It is a lovely start to the weekend, but there are stormy days ahead and for some of us, hotter ones too. The full weekend forecast is on its way. Its saturday the 22nd june. Our top story is police were called to the home of conservative mp borisjohnson in the early hours of friday morning because of reports of a domestic disturbance. Mrjohnson and jeremy hunt are due to address Party Members in birmingham later today as part of their leadership bids. Our Political CorrespondentHelena Wilkinson is in our london newsroom. Helena, what more do we know . The police were called to Boris Johnsons address. Tell us what we know about the sequence of events. We know this address is mrjohnsons which he shares with his partner, the officers from the metropolitan police went to their flat in the early hours of friday morning. The reason we know about this, it has emerged in a guardian article, the Guardian Newspaper, who say they have spoken to a neighbour who says that they have a recording of the alleged row, that recording was done in this neighbours property was a bit as important to stress that we have not heard recording ourselves, but the woman says that she heard woman screaming following by slamming and banging coming from the flat where mrjohnson and his partner live. In that recording, it goes on to say that mrjohnson was my partner is allegedly heard, get off me and get out of my flat. Mr johnson can be heard allegedly refusing to leave the flat and telling the woman to get off his la ptop telling the woman to get off his laptop before there was a loud bang. There is one other comment in that recording where mrjohnsons partner allegedly says, you just dont care for anything because you are spoilt, you have no care for money or anything. We have had a statement from the metropolitan police who have confirmed that they did go to the property in camberwelljust after midnight yesterday in the early hours of yesterday morning. They had a call from a person who was concerned for the welfare of a female neighbour. The police say they attended, spoke to all the occu pa nts they attended, spoke to all the occupants at the address who were all safe and well, there were no offences, the police say, or concerns and there was no cause for any police action. The police left the property. We have tried to contact Boris Johnsons spokesperson. It is a no comment from then. Significant that it isnt a denial at this stage, but you have probably seen the front pages of a lot of the papers this morning to stop this is a many of the front pages and headlines that Boris Johnson would have been very keen to avoid, especially at this point in the leadership contest. In terms of that, all eyes on birmingham today for the. One ofi6 of birmingham today for the. One of 16 of the hustings, the first one this afternoon. Both of the candidates are going to have about 45 minutes each, they will first do about five minutes where they will put their pitch forward to the tory members who will decide which one of the two will become leader and then at the tory members will be given an opportunity to put their questions to these two candidates. We heard earlier run from jeremy hunt, one of the two candidates, hugh has called on borisjohnson to take part in televised debates much sooner. The point i am making is it makes a mockery of this leadership contest for the conservative party if people will have started voting before they have a chance to see the two protagonists on tv. We are going to be able to see those hustings, the cameras will be allowed in, the media will not be allowed in, the media will not be allowed to ask any questions, it is just for the tory members. But this is going to go on for about three weeks, so expect to see much more of the two candidates. Helena, thank you. Churches could become safe spaces for children at risk of becoming victims of knife crime under plans to be discussed at next months meeting of church of england leaders. A priest from south london wants parishes in Serious Violence hotspots to open their doors to Vulnerable Children during the period immediately after school and to provide knife amnesty bins. Charlotte gallagher has more. The tragic toll of knife crime in the uk. More than 100 people have been stabbed to death so far this year. Many, just teenagers. Scenes like this all too familiar. Now a london vicar says the church of england needs to do more to help children at risk of being attacked. Canon rosemarie mallett, whos a vicar in brixton, says churches should open the door to pupils after schools finish, providing a place where they can relax and importantly feel safe. She has also suggested placing knife amnesty bins in churches to encourage more people to hand in their weapons. The proposal will be discussed by Church Leaders at next months general synod. And as knife crime continues to rise, more families grieve their loved ones. Canon mallett hopes her plan will save lives. Charlotte gallagher, bbc news. Schools should teach children about the dangers ofjumping into cold water thats according to the local government association. The number of young people who drowned accidentally in the uk went up by almost a quarter last year 31 died and the lga says lessons on water safety could save lives, as even strong swimmers can suffer from cold water shock. The uks self employed workers need measures to protect them from the impact of being paid late by some biggerfirms. Thats according to the organisation that represents them. Ipsa says the problem has been increasing, and that freelancers are particularly vulnerable. When london based james does work for businesses, he asks for payment within a month. When that comes late, it has a big impact as hell already have paid for parts. If i pay for it on the 15th, and youre not paying me straight after, im then using my own personal money and money that i have had to put aside for rent and for bills. The group which represents self employed and freelance workers known as ipse says two thirds have had trouble with late payments across all sorts of industries. Late payment in real terms means empty bank accounts. It means going into debt sometimes, it means that you cant meet those essential expense payments such as your mortgage or rent payments and this can cause pretty Serious Problems around stress, anxiety, depression and it can even cause problems within personal relationships. The government said this week that while the majority of businesses pay their bills on time, its looking at new measures to make sure that always happens. These include possibly giving the Small Business commissioner powers to find Large Businesses or introduce binding payment plans, making Company Boards more accountable for payment practices to Small Businesses and a new fund to encourage small firms to use technology, which it says could reduce the time spent chasing payments. Labour has said the proposals dont go far enough butjames welcomes any action that will protect businesses like his, as does ipse, although it says the government must follow through on its promises and that ultimately some larger businesses need to change a late payment culture. Katie austin, bbc news. Almost half of packaging used by supermarkets in the uk cant be easily recycled or recycled at all. The Consumer Group which says a lot of material used to keep food fresh is unnecessary. A little bit of french at the end, the legion dhonneurfor eltonjohn. Its the First Ever National windrush day today, celebrating the contribution of the carribbean immigrants who helped to britain in the decades after the Second World War. The tv presenter Floella Benjamin was one of them and windrush day was her idea. Well speak to floella in a moment. First, the bbcs Adina Campbell went to meet some of those taking part. One last practice for these schoolchildren. For weeks they have been preparing performances for a special audience. Some of the residents in this care home belong to the wind rushed a and have been sharing their stories with their younger guests. Hi, my name is taylor. Where do you come from . Lam fromjamaica. Do rememberthe lam fromjamaica. Do remember the day you came . 1959. What was your first day like in the uk . It was all right. I settled down. The empire windrush brings 500 jamaicans. The empire windrush docked in essex backin the empire windrush docked in essex back in 19118. Hundreds of passengers from the caribbean who were invited over after the Second World War left theirfamilies are over after the Second World War left their families are to start a new life in the uk. Taking upjobs in the nhs, armed forces and other public services. Some of these experiences are reflected in the Group Performances at the care home. Half £1 million of government funding has been made available for Community Events all over the uk. This is to celebrate members of the wind rushed a and their families. I dont need nobody. It is hoped these extraordinary stories will help us remember their valuable contribution. All valuable contribution. All| valuable contribution. All i need is you. Deena campbell, bbc news. Baroness benjamin of beckenham also known as the tv presenter Floella Benjamin came to the uk from trinidad in 1960, at the age of ten. Good morning to you, Floella Benjamin. Thank you forjoining us. Good morning and happy windrush day. Indeed this was your idea. It was notjust my idea, i was a number of people who pressed for windrush day for many, many years, because i wrote my england which talked about windrush and talks about how it was, how it had it was coming to britain, so i have others wa nted coming to britain, so i have others wanted to celebrate the Windrush Generation committee so today, windrush day, the first National Windrush day, the first National Windrush day, is a triumph and for many others. What will happen today . Celebrations across the country, there are celebrations in liverpool, although their way up to newcastle, coming down to the south, to bristol and london itself. It is a day of celebration. It is also a day, as you know, is announcing where the windrush monument will be, because the Prime Minister asked me to chair the Prime Minister asked me to chair the Windrush Commemoration Committee to put up a permanent and significant monument somewhere in Central London where as many people, millions of people will see it day, so my committee, we have come up with an idea of putting it in a place that is historic, heritage, Central London, high footfall, and i think it will be great for all the people, all ages to come and have a pilgrimage on windrush day, 22nd june, to see the money and celebrate. Many people in recent memory, the windrush scandal, there was so much controversy about the treatment of some commonwealth migrants and their relatives living in the uk. Didnt need that to happen before this date could be recognised the government . I always say, after bad comes good. We asa i always say, after bad comes good. We as a people of caribbean heritage, we know how hard it has been for us for the last 500 people, a struggle for us to get to where we are today, but we have always persevered and believed in ourselves and it is great that the whole nation, all british people now recognise the contribution that caribbean people made when they came in the windrush and the windrush era. Caribbean people and black people have been in britain for centuries, we have always been here, but the most people came in those yea rs, but the most people came in those years, and we have never been recognised and acknowledged by the contribution we have made, always taken for granted even though we have always been dedicated, passionate, committed to help rebuild britain in any way we have done. Ifeel as rebuild britain in any way we have done. I feel as though rebuild britain in any way we have done. Ifeel as though i have been embraced to playschool contribution, but we have never been truly recognised as caribbean people, so having a windrush monument will be the idea of saying yes, we appreciate you, you do belong to britain, you are entwined in British Society like society and history in a way we are recognising and we need that for children. They need to see they belong, they are part of a great britain, they are part of something that is worth celebrating and the windrush monument, shall i tell you where it is going to be . Please the monument will be on the concourse of waterloo station. Waterloo station, where thousands of people from the caribbean came from on that trip from southampton on the train to the station, waterloo station. I was one of those people. Icame station. I was one of those people. I came there and i looked at this great place, fantastic, fallacious, it has heritage like a palace. It isa it has heritage like a palace. It is a go to destination, they will refurbish the pace, develop it with restau ra nts a nd refurbish the pace, develop it with restaurants and shops, opening it to the south bank. Millions people will see it. Tell us about your experience when you arrived in 1960, because it is very interesting you chose your title baroness benjamin of beckenham. The reason why i chose that is because the way i was treated when i first came here, i was spat on, told to go where i came from, i wasnt wanted. My mother decided she would live in beckenham. If we live there, we will get the best health care, best jumble sales. We we will get the best health care, bestjumble sales. We turned up to look at the house and it was a wonderful house and we were really happy and running around and thinking which room we were going to have, and we heard, we looked out the window, the streets were full of policemen. The neighbours had it wrong 999 to state that black people we re wrong 999 to state that black people were in the house stealing the fixtures and fittings and my mother said, hey, you know something . We are going to buy this house, we will live here. And she lived there for 40 live here. And she lived there for a0 yea rs. Live here. And she lived there for a0 years. In fact, she died in that house of bowel cancer. That is why i ama house of bowel cancer. That is why i am a patron of bowel cancer. So my mother and father, they didnt see me become a baroness in the house of lords, so they are both buried in beckenham cemetery, so i went there andi beckenham cemetery, so i went there and i said, mum, dad, im going to claim beckenham for you, i will call myself baroness benjamin of beckenham. And now beckenham treats me so affectionately for stop there is even a pub there, that knows me as one of the well known people of the town. Part of the windrush monument will have that change there, it will have the educational element, on the plinth there will be an educational element where you can understand the history so can look at Something Like the National Archives. I went to the National Archives. I went to the National Archives and i was amazed to find, there was a log, a passenger list of when i came to britain as a ten year old and where i ended up in chiswick. It was things like the black cultural archives, their elements will be in there. I want the rest of the country to know, i havent forgotten you for stop there will be some kind of element where physical as well as educational will be brought into this statue and to this monument and i want to do celebrated in a way that has never been done before and it is a great day, a great windrush day and from now on there will always be windrush day and i want people to come when the monument is unveiled, we are looking for a fantastic artist, we do not know what it will be yet. We wa nt do not know what it will be yet. We want someone with creative thoughts to come and create something that children, adults, grandparents, great grandparents will come and see it and celebrate. Any artist watching will be in touch with you. Your joy any artist watching will be in touch with you. Yourjoy for this day is infectious. I am so pleased for you. Thank you so much for talking to us. Hgppy thank you so much for talking to us. Happy windrush day, everyone this morning we have had some fantastic energy from our guest this morning, havent we . And if there were a theme and floella said it herself, how do you get to something good from something bad . And her enthusiasm and her smile and everything, you see that pathway. Really properly made me smile the weather is going to the same, i think. Same, ithink. Tell us same, i think. Tell us more. Iso same, i think. Tell us more. I so wish i had a picture of beckenham behind me, but we are in northumberland. Just about across the uk it is a sunny start but it will stay that way for many of us. Most of us. High pressure is in control, it is settled and not too hot as well for stop temperatures are heading up for some of us next week, but right now we are in the comfort zone with the area of High Pressure. Yes there is a low pressure. Yes there is a low pressure lurking to the west and that will make more of an impact right at the end of the week. This is the rest of today. A bit of cloud across eastern parts of england and may squeeze out some isolated showers. How to start in Northern Ireland and more sunshine this afternoon. The crowd in scotland will produce some showers, but for many it is sunshine, highs of high teens, low 20s, very high pollen levels in england and wales so there isa levels in england and wales so there is a price to pay possibly. This evening coming barbecues are in good shape, overnight variable cloud, the odd shower in northern scotland and a hint of the weather front coming closer will produce outbreaks of rain to the very south west of england, not as chilly overnight as it was last night. Low pressure making more of an impact tomorrow, particularly further west and south west you are as the weather front gets closer. For many it is still High Pressure in control of the start of tomorrow with sunshine, clouds will increase, the breeze picks up as well, there may be some showers breaking out, possibly thundery, but the low pressure are giving rain to Northern Ireland, South West England, some of that turning thundery later in the day. Perhaps feeling cooler towards the north sea coast, but one in south east england up to around 25 celsius. Feeling as humid as well. The area of low pressure will turn things wetter for many, met office warnings. Northern ireland seeing rain, bit parts in england and wales, 20 to 50 millimetres of rain in some spots. It could cause some disruption, may be flooding in some spots. The risk into scotland, may be 100 millimetres over the higher ground. A big variety of rainfall totals, not everyone will see has much as this, but it shows you the potential for more weather disruption going into monday and and monday to tuesday, especially parts of england and wales, with the main area of rain clearing away, plenty of thunderstorms around us are based on the start of the week, but it will also become very warm, even hot in some spots. Not everyone will get temperatures this high, but the highest temperature next week could be around 30 or 31 celsius, inevitably towards the south and south east where it becomes very humid, very warm nights as well fuzzed up for many it will turn warmer, feel my humid, feels there would be mars sunshine for the second half of the week. We are one. Warned. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news. Now for a look at the newspapers. The writer paul vallely is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Good morning. Well speak to you in a minute. Lets take a look at the papers. One story dominates the front pages this morning. The reports that police were called to the london home of borisjohnson and his partner Carrie Symonds in the early hours of friday morning. A neighbour reportedly heard a loud argument. The police said, there was no cause for police action. A spokesman for mrjohnson has said no comment. Paul, you are taking a look at rylands who has made a stand. They will remember he was Thomas Cromwell in wolf hall, but he is also largely a theatre actor and he is an associate artist of the Royal Shakespeare company for about 30 yea rs Shakespeare Company for about 30 years and he has resigned because the rsc is sponsored by bp and he thinks they should not be sponsoring a fossilfuel atmosphere thinks they should not be sponsoring a fossil fuel atmosphere destroying company. So he has written a piece in the guardian announcing his resignation and he compares them to arms dealers, tobacco salesmen or anyone else who wilfully destroys the lives of others. And he says he thinks William Shakespeare would agree with him was up and what i would say is we have not had a reply from bp, but it would obviously deny being that side of company. And the rsc themselves say they have to be pragmatic and 10,000 young people a year get a £5 cheap ticket to see their shows of as a result of the sponsorship. We know cass is sharp cash is short. People need to think more carefully about where they get their money from our weather it stands up to scrutiny. One arts person told me that when you need money, you go to the companies that need to launder their reputation, so it is almost like the people. Rylance use the phrase that philanthropy is used to hide culpability. In a world where increasingly companies are sponsoring, it will become more problematic. The parents of a muslim convert spared jail yesterday but were found guilty of funding terrorism. Explain what has happened here. Their son to a School Project on islam and as a result of it became obsessed with it and converted. He went off to syria to fight the islamic state, his parents sent him money. Initially they said, he wrote, he said he wants to leave. And they sent him money for and he didnt leave and he asked for more. The plea said to not send any more money and you will be breaking the law. And they carried on sending money. He said he wanted to leave syria and the crown prosecution has said, it is naturalfor parents syria and the crown prosecution has said, it is natural for parents to ca re said, it is natural for parents to care for their son, but they were actually told not to send any money for sub it is a heartbreaking thing, if you put yourself in the parents situation. There are interesting e mails in the times back and forth from them and the father in one of them says he is a self confessed armchair revolutionist. When he went off, he said he admired his bravery. And then his mum says, clearly i indulged you, i made you think you are the centre of the universe, i regret this. It is really heartbreaking. You can see, you put yourself in that position as a parent, what do you do . No black and white there. When restorations dont go quite to plan. Slightly over enthusiastic. We have pictures before or after and after after, because you can see the original statue of george and the original statue of george and the dragon in a church in northern spain, and then over enthusiastic well intentioned local artist, they got to work on it and painted it blue. According to what they say here, he went a bit over the top and made him in an extremely pink nose which would not have been in keeping of how it originally would have been. It might be quite tempting, given thejob of. You might want to it might be quite tempting, given the job of. You might want to add your own little dash of something. They said he looks like tintin. It would have cost 6000 euros to fix it, but it is now cost 30,000 euros. They had to undo the work and then redo it. They said they dont want people to come to our town thinking, just to look at this. If you remember, there was another botched restoration, a local woman touched up restoration, a local woman touched upa restoration, a local woman touched up a picture of christ and everyone called it the monkey christ because she turned it into a very unrecognisable thing. You have got to be careful it turns out that the tourism in that town has increased fourfold because people are keen on seeing mistakes. I always love it when they unveil a statue of someone and then they unveil it and it looks arsenal. Maradona and ronaldo. There has been some good ones. It has been lovely talking to you. Louis mccarthy scarsbrook, with two of their tries. There were wins too for salford and wigan. Its considered to be the ultimate test of sporting prowess. This week the modern pentathlon World Cup Final takes place injapan and the british Team Includes the current mens World Champion. But if all five events feels a bit out of reach, theres now a safe way to try out the last two disciplines running and shooting. Ive been to bath to join the british team and find out more. It is one of the oldest olympic sports and in the 19th century was developed to test the skills of the ideal soldier, the ability to run to and from battle, to shoot your opponent, to put them to the sword, to swim with power and speed and to get on an unknown horse unclear whatever obstacles your way. This is where my love challenge will end, they show jumping may where my love challenge will end, they showjumping may pit many of getting involved in the sport, but there is a way of us to get a taste of what the athletes do. There is the laser run, still be finale, the elite tent athletes from team gpa, but its also a sport and its own right, which is on tourfor everybody to have a go at this summer. It is simply running and shooting lasers. You have got 50 seconds. To hit the target five times. The athletes have early gone. Running and shooting is to be separate events and pentathlon but they are now combined to make the final stages of a competition more exciting. Athletes have to run 800 metres, hit five targets and then repeat three more times. A scaled down version of a laser run with shorter distances will now be taken around with shorter distances will now be ta ken around towns with shorter distances will now be taken around towns and cities this summerand taken around towns and cities this summer and the lasers are also safe, look, the athletes can run binding targets as they like me. It is fantastic, it is relatively quick, the equipment is provided on the safety of the laser is as plain because you can host in schools and town centres are getting atmosphere. It is the entry drug we hope for modern pentathlon long term. We are hoping with all these youngsters coming in to try laser run, they will then get the idea of trying say, three or four different spots and ultimately leading up to trying modern pentathlon. The athletes make it look so easy, but once i have been a running making the targets turn green with an accurate shot so much of a challenge. It is exciting because you can see where the winner of the leader is and you have got your eye on them, you are trying to catch them, but you have got to keep really composed in the shooting because it can be won or lost on the shooting range. Before they even get to the laser run, they have already been put through the mill starting with the 200 metres swim. Many of the british tea m 200 metres swim. Many of the british team heading to the woke up and take it as as swimmers, once they have dried off they will have to face 35 other opponents on the fencing. Once right now and you win. You have to be very tactical and committed for that one hit in one minute. Its over, the beeb has gone, the contest is done. All these days they are held over five hours, is done. All these days they are held overfive hours, with the is done. All these days they are held over five hours, with the laser run finale it often comes down to the wire, like in the World Champions last year. They started celebrating a fraction too early. Ican celebrating a fraction too early. I can remember a lot of pain, the altitude in mexico city, it was suffering, he looked at me afterwards, i am so stupid. Suffering, he looked at me afterwards, i am so stupidlj suffering, he looked at me afterwards, i am so stupid. I cant disagree with that one. Jamie settled for a similar close finish in this competition in bath in august. They will be there on that track come august, you have got the World Cup Finalfour come august, you have got the World Cup Final four pent athletes in japan this week, and laser run has become a sport in its own right with different differences, the british champions for those are in solihull tomorrow in fact. Eagle eyed viewers will notice you did not have the horse riding in europe, is there is a reason . |j mentioned europe, is there is a reason . mentioned why i became unstuck on the writing, i showed the pictures from 2013 when i fell off, and the showjumping feature i did, at Bath University debated whether they would bring a hostel along to both fulfilment day, and they quickly said, no hostas. Mike no horses. They have to write unknown horses, they do not get used to, you have to try and work out how to write it on the day. That would be really hard because people teach horses different signals you have to get to know the horses. In laser run throughout the summer, it is coming to towns and cities near you , it is coming to towns and cities near you, go to the website have a look. Mega hard to do the shooting after running. It is 200 metres running, i found it after running. It is 200 metres running, ifound it impossible because i stopped running. Have you got a steady hand . Not a study as i would like. Mike, thank you very much. Glorious weather coming up. A lovely picture as well. Good morning. A glorious the weekend, plenty of sunshine out there from the word go, the slight chance of an isolated shower, we will pick up the edges are just a moment. Feeling a bit warmer, next week will be hot and humid for some of us but we are in the comfort zone today. It is High Pressure across us, yes, i know, low pressure weather fronts waiting in the winds, more of an issue later tomorrow, to my night and into monday, as we will see. This is how the rest of the day is shaping up. Some cloud there are parts of eastern england, may produce isolated showers, some in northern scotland, one or two showers passing through this afternoon. The cloud we have had so far in Northern Ireland, a lot of thatis far in Northern Ireland, a lot of that is going to clear to allow some sunshine to come through and temperatures, low teens, high 20s, high pollen levels, especially in england and wales. Not a great day for everyone. Into this evening, the barbecue is looking ok, staying mainly dry, the shower in northern scotland, the weather front hinting some habits of rent was the far south west, the isles of scilly and overnight temperatures, not as chilly as it was this morning. Low pressure taking over to andy we can, especially down to the south west, close to this weather front. Tomorrow will start just as we have done today, with sunshine. Cloud is going to build tomorrow, the breeze. To pick up, there will be one or two showers breaking out here and there, close to this weather front some outbreaks of rain, Northern Ireland, parts of south west wales, South West England slowly making further progress in switching the day. Perhaps a little cooler along north sea coast, more of a breeze, warmer in South West England, up to 25 celsius in the warm spots. It tends to rein going sunday to monday, yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms, this area of rainfall, went two for a time in Northern Ireland, pushes its way northwards, some intense thundery bursts that time, might produce between 20 50 millimetres in rain. If you end up with the wetter stuff, thatis if you end up with the wetter stuff, that is the potential for some disruption going into monday and that the thunderstorms at times, monday into tuesday as well before things look a little bit quieter later next week. A storming start to the week, the possibility of getting some travel disruption, but some flooding, some warm sunshine. Hot sunshine in some places, not everybody will see attempt at the side but the hotspots could pass 30 celsius mark for a time, but the further south you are in particular it will become very humid, very warm nights as well. I know that is not everybodys cup of tea, but some proper british summer weather looks to be around the corner. Thank you very much. The accolade follows the release of a biopic about sir eltons life, depicting his battles with drink and drugs over a 50 year career. Hes currently on his farewell world tour, but the people of france will clearly welcome him back for an encore whenever he wants. Soap opera storylines about sexual abuse normally show an older man preying on a young girl. But the itv soap emmerdale has been exploring the reverse situation. This week fans saw a female teacherjailed for grooming a teenage pupil whos also her step son. Lets see the moment she gets sent down. Your relationship with jacob is compromised by the fact you are in a serious relationship with his father. Not serious enough to stop humiliating him. You betrayed your employer, your partner and the young man at the centre of this. He is 15 yea rs old man at the centre of this. He is 15 years old when the sexual communication took place. And the rest. I am in no doubt that this case passes the custody threshold. Why give credit for the guilty plea, i sent you to 12 month immediate imprisonment. Matt wolfenden plays the victims father, david. He joins us now along with emma naylor, from the Child Protection charity, barnardos. Good to see you here. Soap opera is more and more increasingly over the yea rs, more and more increasingly over the years, other soap operas is well have embraced some tough subject matter. I am curious, this idea, the scriptwriters presumably come to you, here is what is going to be happening. The producer essentially called a certain and said we are going to approach the storyline, we wa nt going to approach the storyline, we want your character to be involved in it. I was sent to amanda, as a actor, you go thats amazing, brilliant story on to be involved when. Then you go crikey, how are we going to do this . It is going to be a huge storyline, the reverse role. She is his stepmum, you said, he is my stepson, she is his teacher. To approach that, we needed barnardos help and we had an incredible day with four young men heave visit happen to them, they had been sexually abused. They gave us a lot of information, the storyline writers, the righteous and the producers, the actors, and it was because of that that we moved forward , because of that that we moved forward, they made the storyline what it was. Amanda, what will make this interesting is the situation, the older women, the younger guy, a teacher, it has often been joked about as a schoolboy fantasy, to fa ncy about as a schoolboy fantasy, to fancy the teacher and fantasise about her, and if it happens, great. It is never seen as abuse, as it would be more traditionally if it was a male teacher and younger girl. This is the side that is being addressed now. And it is so important that we address it because we know the impact on the base is exactly the same of the impact of details. There is a myth that you are talking about, every young boys dream, ora boy should be are talking about, every young boys dream, or a boy should be able to stop exhortation is another matter, all that women cannot abuse is another myth that silence is poise. What we know is impacting on the future relationships, it can lead to some Serious Problems so it is something we need to address and we are thankful to emmerdale for doing it. It needs to be done responsibly. Youve seen the script play out, and you are in agreement with how it has been approach. The collaboration has been approach. The collaboration has been great. The fact that the boys we nt been great. The fact that the boys went up initially, but every step of the way, we have shed scripts, we have been able to comment. The the boys have been able to make it authentic, it is subtle and complicated, but the way they have done it has shown it true to real life. Have you had a pick up of people getting in touch . We have seen this before, havent we . What we think in terms of scale, it is difficult to know exact data but we think about a third of all sexual abuse happens, happens to boys. Two thirds girls, one third boys from what we know. Only 5 of children in our services have been boys up until now. What we really wanted was for boys to be able to identify it as vulnerable, often professionals do not see them as vulnerable, they see them as difficult and they label them in different ways. We are really hoping that professionals will not see them as vulnerable, they see them as difficult and they label them in different ways. We are really hoping that professional. To identify boys and that them in contact with our service and get the help that they need. You have spoken to young men who have been green by older females, when you are talking to them, what is that moment that they realise that they cream to . We did not talk about the exact cases, particularly for me, i had to ask the question what their parents felt like so when the parents did find out, did they blame themselves, did they blame the child . Who did they blame . They absolutely blame themselves. I think what we have shown in emmerdale is the more than one victim to crimes like this. It affects a massive amount of people around that one victim. I hope we patrolled they portrayed that right, we really wa nted portrayed that right, we really wanted to get that right and i think the writers on our show this hit the nail on the head. Soap fans nail on the head. Soa p fa ns love nail on the head. Soap fans love their soaps. You know there is. Emmerdale fans love emmerdale, if had much feedback . Massively. From people going this as every schoolboys fantasy, this is not sexual abuse this way round, we have had that from that spectrum, people think im switching the south, this is disgusting, i cannot watch it any more. People saying iam watch it any more. People saying i am switching this. The people who said they were going to switch off never did. They have kept watching. When david found out, it was a year coming, but when he did find out, the audience got what they wanted, particularly last night, she got sentenced to a year, that is something that barnardos wanted, throughout the storyline, she had to getjustice. Lovely speaking to you this morning. Emmerdale is on itv every weeknight at 7pm, with an extra episode at 8pm on thursdays. Thats it from us this morning. Brack practice will be on tomorrow from 6am. Goodbye. This is bbc news. The headlines at 10. It has emerged that police were called to the home of the tory leadership candidate Boris Johnson it and his partner late on thursday night after a neighbour heard a loud argument. It comes as mrjohnson and jeremy hunt prepare to hold the first of 16 hustings each trying to persuade conservative members that they should become the next Prime Minister. I think we should be doing debates early, we should be doing them often. If the party wants him to go out to battle against nigel farage, jeremy corbyn, 27 eu countries, then surely it is not such a big deal to go outside with a friendly foreign secretary.
