And at 11 30 well be taking an in depth look at the papers. Stay with us for that. Good evening. Four men are left in the race to be next Prime Minister after rory stewart was knocked out of the conservative leadership contest. The International Development secretary was eliminated after coming last in this afternoons vote by tory mps. Jeremy hunt came second, with 5a which was narrowly ahead of michael gove with 51. Sajid javid also made it into the next but mr stewart has been knocked out after receiving just 27 votes10 fewer than last nights with 2 more rounds of voting to go, by tomorrow evening we will know the last two candidates in the race. 0ur Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg has the latest. Good morning, mrjohnson. Mrjohnson, youve been fired. Not a shabby birthday present. A gift from boris johnson, support from nearly half of all tory mps, as he turned 55. Are you an honest person . Despite the appearance of chaos, no blunder so far from the former foreign secretary. Can the nation trust you . 0ut front in the final four. The following candidates are now eligible to continue onto the next ballot on thursday the 20th ofjune at 10am. Michael gove, jeremy hunt, sajid javid and boris johnson. The formal announcement revealing three senior cabinet ministers are the ones to take him on. Boris continues to build his lead and build a wide field across the party. We keep going, hopefully well be lucky enough to get down to the last two and then we can go and really sell a vision to the country, which will be the really exciting part. The insiders outsider did draw a crowd. Relax, im not going anywhere. Except he was going out. The momentum for rory stewart was punctured. In the end, perhaps, some of the things i was saying, that a no deal brexit would be catastrophic or that you cant negotiate a new deal with europe, probably proved to be truths that people werent quite ready to hear. Three ministers now grapple for the silver medal. Right now, the foreign secretary has it in his grasp. I think that he did very well in the tv debate last night. He came across as clear, concise, authoritative. I think he has a calm presence that people are beginning to increasingly participate. But with the trio, including michael gove, struggling to keep up with borisjohnson. Do you want to get through . Yes, absolutely. There are whispers of pacts to provide a genuine challenge. At some point, theres going to have to be a deal, isnt there . No, i think michael has begun to make real progress. Hes put on a tremendous spurt over the last couple of days. I believe he won last nights debate. I believe genuinely there is a proper challenger to boris johnson, and that is michael gove. And the home secretary, whose support looked wobbly, is through and reckons he could still do it on his own. What will happen overnight, and im already hearing it from colleagues, theyre going to go away and think very carefully about this. Everyone realises, and they accept absolutely, that borisjohnson will be one of the final two, and well done to him, and now its about who will be that second person. I think what my colleagues want, at the end of the day, they want a winner. Remember, though, its tory Party Members like jeremy, richard, kevin and nabeel that will make the final call. After mps choose the final two tomorrow night, they are the ones wholl chew it over. We have a fantastic pool of prospective future cabinet members, prospective leaders, and i think a lot of people have done themselves a Great Service being in this race. Borisjohnson has got a lot of baggage with him. I think, if you wanted somebody that was high in morals, then you wouldnt have got rid of theresa may in the first place. Ive not been the biggest boris fan in the past. However, hes providing a unifying factor, both inside the party and perhaps more importantly to other people i talk to. Hes a little marmite, but more people seem to be willing to rally around him than not. Its getting very wearisome. Texts from my daughter today, will you get the conservatives off the news for me, please . Not likely. Pencil in tomorrows headline, borisjohnson speeding towards number ten. The unknown, who will be the last man standing in his way . Jonathan blake is at westminster. The big question is, word of the votes of rory stewart go for tomorrows latest round of voting . Yes, can bet that michael gove, jeremy hunt, sajid javid and Boris Johnsons campaign will be working the phones, twisting the odd arm, whispering in as many as they can find. The race at this stage is interesting. Consolidating the boat just between second and third place. And then sajid javid in a distant fourth place looking to really need something of a surge of support hes going to go into the final ballot and reach the final two. All to play for that second place. So far it seems, none of the candidates appear ready to drop out orjoin forces. Deals may yet be done during this campaign but at the moment, they still saying they are in it to win it. He is at the bottom of the four the moment. Is there any sense that if he was potentially promised something by boris johnson, if he was potentially promised something by borisjohnson, there is speculation he could be the next chancellor. That he could perhaps lead the race . In exchange for any promised like that. Sajid javid has said he has never borrowed anything, never been given or handed any opportunity. Wasnt privately educated, didnt go to a top university, went to a state school while the background isnt enough on its own. He will need a significant increase to support. In response to those claims, he is pushing back and saying is going to stand this race. Jonathan, thank you for that. The bbcs vetting process has been called into question after it was alleged that one of the contributors to last nights Leadership Debate has extreme views. Abdullah patel has been suspended from his job as deputy head at a Gloucester School and relieved of his duties as a local imam after controversial social media posts were revealed. Heres our media editor amol rajan. In politically febrile times, any editorial error or shortcoming by the bbc can prompt huge anger. Hello, good evening. One of the men on stage will become our next Prime Minister. 0ne contributor to last nights tv debate was Abdullah Patel from gloucester. I see first hand the every day impact of islamophobic rhetoric on my community. Following the programme, it emerged mr patel had previously made offensive comments on social media, including about israel. The bbc say they carried out Extensive Research on all contributors. A researcher was told he had a twitter account which had been deactivated. Once he reactivated it after the debate, the remarks came to light. Words have consequences. The editor of the show last night tweeted to say that we wouldnt have put him on the programme if these were public before broadcast. But they were not. Mr patel was suspended today by the school in gloucester where he is deputy head teacher. His local mosque is also investigating, he says the remarks were not anti semitic. This is amman who is going to talk to us. The final question in yesterdays show was from aman thakkar in london. When will you do the right thing and call a general election . But last year, mr thakkar, who is a solicitor, stood as a candidate for labour in local elections. His employer has been commissioned by the labour party to work on anti semitism. And last october, mt thakkar was appointed to arrange conduct of the partys investigation. He was given a labour e mail address. This connection with the labour party was not conveyed to viewers. And mr thakkars social media past was also under the spotlight. He was suspended today by his legal firm while they investigate tweets for which he has apologised. I think today theres a lot more checking that needs to go on, because the whole sort of social media profile and that sort of thing and i think its the duty is on the producers or the researchers and the production teams to do their absolute best to make sure they are doing due diligence. There are two editorial issues here quality of vetting and transparency. Given there were thousands of submissions, the fact that two out of eight contributors were suspended from their roles the following day is not a good look, and on honesty with audiences, there is no suggestion the bbc tried to deceive anyone, and it doesnt as a rule reveal political affiliations, but perhaps some viewers would like to know more about who is asking the questions. In an age of instant outrage on social media, a debate watched by millions is no place to let standards slip. Amol rajan, bbc news. Detectives investigating the death of the cardiff city footballer Emiliano Sala say a 64 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. The 28 year old argentinian in a plane crash injanuary. Our correspondent sian lloyd gave us the latest tonight from cardiff. The football that was on his way he to start a new chapter to in his career when the plane he was travelling in crashed north of guernsey and that was back in january. Both Emiliano Sala and the pilot, David Ibbotson, were killed. A month later, Emiliano Salas body was found and taken to dorset and since then, Dorset Police force of been carrying out enquiries on behalf of the coroner in tonight they confirmed the 64 year old man from North Yorkshire had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in an unlawful act. They say he has been helping them with their enquiries and has been released from custody pending further investigation. The families of both Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson are being kept informed of these developments. Meanwhile, an error investigation by the air Accident Team into what caused the plane to crash is continuing. Four men have been charged with the murder of almost 300 People Killed when a passenger plane which took off from amsterdam was brought down in Eastern Ukraine, almost five years ago. Dutch prosecutors have issued International Arrest warrants for three russian citizens and a ukrainian who they say brought a missile launcher to Eastern Ukraine, which was then fired at the plane. 0ur correspondent Damian Grammaticas has more. Charged with mass murder. All former military and in diligence offices and one ukrainian. Prosecutors say there were commanding separatists in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, losing on the battlefield, they phoned senior military and government officials in russia desperate for weapons and support. The calls intercepted by ukrainian intelligence are part of the evidence unveiled today along with footage found on the internet of the missile launcher dispatched from russia and more. There is forensic, there is witnesses, there is wiretap and when you go through all those layers, than at the end you could say one and one and one is five. We have enough evidence to go to court. And this is what happened when the missile was fired. Ukrainian fighter jet but when the missile was fired. Ukrainian fighterjet but Malaysia Airlines mh17 brought down. The pieces retrieved from ukraine were reassembled by prosecutors. They said amendment notified the missile but are culpable anyway. Celine fredericks s son and girlfriend we re fredericks s son and girlfriend were among the 300 people on the plane. Bryce and daisy heading to bali on holiday. Who do you think is ultimately responsible for what happened that day, the shooting down . Vladimir putin. He knows everything. This could not have happened without his permission. This is farfrom happened without his permission. This is far from the end of the investigation. Prosecutors say they will go as far as they can from those who press the button all the way up the chain of command to those in russia who may have had anything to do with it. You saw telephone call from a high ranked person in the russian federation. It can go high up. Russia maintains the investigation was biased. It wont send its citizens to stand trial abroad but the family say just the truth being established will be just as enough. Earlier i spoke to nick vamos, partner at Peters Peters solicitors and former head of extradition at the crown prosecution service. He said russias policy was not to extradite its own citizens russia doesnt extradite its own citizens. It is very clear on that, and ukraine is the same. Thats not actually an unusual position for a country to take, many other countries follow the same policy. The quid pro quo, of course, is that the country that refuses to extradite its own nationals would prosecute them itself instead. The problem we have here, which is the same problem as with the litvinenko case and the poisoning, is that we dont expect them to do that. So there is a legal impasse. Given that, then, explain the significance of holding the trail anyway, in absentia. Well, the significance to the victims, the families of the victims, i should say, and to the criminal Justice System victims, i should say, and to the criminalJustice System as a whole is that you can still hold people accountable. You can still show that the evidence is there. That evidence can be properly tested, a verdict can be properly tested, a verdict can be properly tested, a verdict can be returned, and the public can see that a fair process was followed. And if the suspects and the state that protects them doesnt engage in that process, then they can still be held accountable. U nfortu nately can still be held accountable. Unfortunately they cant be punished. Yes, that is the big problem here, isnt it . Is there. What kind of pressure might be put behind the scenes on the russians to try to yield on this . Although it is probably likely it is not going to work. Well, as i said, there is no legal solution, unfortunately. There isa legal solution, unfortunately. There is a real impasse there. So one has to look at diplomatic and political measures which can be brought to bear, sanctions and so forth. These things have all been tried before in other high profile cases. The death toll, of course, in the mh17 atrocity is massive compared to the other two cases i mentioned, litvinenko and skripal, so you can see that the pressure is there, but iam sure see that the pressure is there, but i am sure that the russian state will just continue to i am sure that the russian state willjust continue to deny, as they a lwa ys willjust continue to deny, as they always have done. I dont think it will make a shred of difference, u nfortu nately. The headlines on bbc news rory stewart is knocked out of the conservative leadership contest, leaving four in the race to be the next Prime Minister. An investigation for the United Nations into the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi has concluded there is credible evidence the crown prince of saudi arabia was behind it. Mr khashoggi, who was a critic of the prince, was killed inside the saudi consulate in istanbul last year. 0ur Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale reports. Jamal khashoggi was a columnist for the washington post, a critic of the saudi leadership, and a proud husband to be. But, in october last year, he entered the saudi consulate in istanbul to get some papers he and his fiancee, hatice cengiz, needed for their marriage. He was never seen again. An independent investigation for the United Nations has now concluded he was the victim of a deliberate, premeditated execution by the saudi state. The 100 page report sets out in grim detail how officials at the saudi consulate planned and carried out the murder, from the initial struggle to the sound of the body being dismembered. Many of the saudi officials who flew into istanbul and are suspected of involvement are named in the report. But crucially, it also says mohammad bin salman, the crown prince and de facto ruler of saudi arabia, should also be investigated, citing experts who said it was inconceivable he was not aware of the operation. That evidence demonstrates that further investigation is required to determine individual liability, including at the highest level of the government of saudi arabia. That includes the crown prince. Her report urged un Member States to impose targeted sanctions against individuals allegedly involved in the killing of mr khashoggi. These should include the crown prince of saudi arabia, unless or until proof emerges he had no responsibility. The crown princes foreign minister said the report contained nothing new, just contradictions and unfounded allegations. But this report matters because it puts pressure on saudi arabias allies, the united states, the United Kingdom and others, that they cantjust ignore this murder and carry on with business as usual, such as ministers discussing trade and intelligence as if nothing had happened. The Foreign Office said those responsible must be held accountable, but right now that only includes 11 unnamed suspects being tried behind closed doors. So this report is not the last word on what happened to Jamal Khashoggi. James landale, bbc news. A woman in her 80s is in a serious condition after an accident involving a Police Motorbike on monday, which was part of a convoy escorting the duke and duchess of cambridge. The royal couple are said to be deeply concerned and saddened to hear about irene mayor. The incident is now being investigated by the independent 0ffice for police conduct. Donald trump has officially launched his campaign for re election as president in 2020. He unveiled his new slogan, keep america great, and told thousands of supporters at a rally in florida that the American Economy was the envy of the world. Mr trump also pledged to continue to crack down against illegal immigration, and lashed out at democrats, accusing them of trying to rip your country apart. The bbc has learnt that the uks biggest gambling firms are offering a tenfold increase in the amount they contribute to tackling problem gambling. This could after five years amount to £100 million a year. In a letter to the government, the Companies Said they would also consider reviewing the tone and content of their advertising in order to protect young and vulnerable people. Excluding children from school who have not been vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella is being considered by the health secretary. That is as the government tries to tackle an increase in the numbers of children in england contracting the diseases. The uptake of the mmr jab has fallen for the last four years, as our Health Editor hugh pym reports. He was funny. He used to make up dances, make up songs. Gemmas son sam had measles at the age of three. He hadnt had the injections because of other health problems. Earlier this year, he developed a rare brain disorder, sspe, linked back to the measles virus. He died in hospital. Its left a six year old sized hole. Even at the hospital, he had the nurses laughing and. Yeah, its hard. Measles is highly infectious. This little girl was too young to be vaccinated. She recovered in hospital. Some families, perhaps influenced by false claims about vaccine safety, are refusing jabs, and now there have been calls for them to be mandatory. The idea of a compulsory vaccination system is now part of the debate. Other countries, other european countries, are moving there, and some states in america are moving there. But id rather we didnt do that. Historically, weve had very high vaccination rates in the uk. Persuasion doesnt always work. This gp and others in west london was told by officials to contact parents about vaccinations after measles outbreaks at local schools, but there wasnt much response. We suspect that its not a Strong Enough message, perhaps, to convince people who are very convinced that they dont want the vaccine to then change their mind. Theres a balance between educating, encouraging, but also not insisting. And gemma has this message for parents. Its not alwaysjust about your family. Vaccinating your child, if they can be vaccinated, you could help save another parent from burying their six year old. 0r younger. 0ur Health Editor hugh pym reporting there. The us military has ratcheted up still further the tension with iran, following the attacks on oil tankers near the strategic straits of hormuz in the last month. The us is blaming iran, and today has tried to bolster its case by displaying fragments of mines which it claims iran planted on the ships. Iran has denied any involvement, and the us navy has taken journalists to see one of the damaged ships, currently docked nine miles off the united arab emirates. 0ur correspondent mark lowen was among them. It has brought a volatile region closer to conflict attacks last week on two ships in the gulf, that the us is blaming on iran. Washington says this was the iranian patrol boat involved. Tehran denies it. Today, American Forces showed us what they say are fragments of the mine that caused the blast, and a magnet, allegedly part of an unexploded device, resembling those iran is known to have. This type of attack is a threat to International Freedom of navigation in international waters, as well as freedom of commerce. As they build their case, the us navy took us out on a rare trip to see one of the stricken tankers. We travelled for an hour from the coast of the uae, through choppy waters, where a fifth of the worlds crude oil is transported a geopolitical flashpoint that feels nervous. As we approached the japanese owned vessel, the impact of the attack was clear, gouging out the side. If it was a warning shot, it had a crippling effect. Well, you can see the force of the blast here. This is the hole that the americans say was caused by the iranian limpet mine that ripped through the outer and inner hull of this ship. It may have been designed to damage rather than sink, but either way, it has sparked Huge International tension. Iran says it will increase its Nuclear Stockpile next week, due to us sanctions that were meant to force tehran to the negotiating table. Theyre putting us under economic pressure while at the same time asking us to talk, said president rouhani. That would be like an act of economic surrender. In this crucial choke point, peace is being strangled. Neither side may want war, but the risk of an accident is perilously real. Mark lowen, bbc news, off the coast of fujairah. And well be taking an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers, jo tanner and jessica elgot. That is coming up after the headlines at 11 30pm. Now its time for the weather. Hello again. Well, some parts of the uk have already had more than twice the amount of rain we would normally see in the whole ofjune, so two days dry weather back to back, not much to ask, at this time of year. And we might manage that in a few days, as well. Low pressure influencing our weather and close to the low Pressure Centre in scotland, those showers will be with us from the word go and spread inland through the morning. Northern ireland, showers also developing through the morning, but for england and wales, most places probably starting off with a dry morning with some sunshine. Shower clouds will develop later in the day. It will be a fresher kind of day and the showers through the afternoon still having some pretty big gaps between them. There will be some sunshine, top temperature is about 19 degrees. We start to see some changes in the weather as we head into friday. Low pressure in the north of the uk, we will start to build a bridge across the south of the uk, so the weather in southern areas will become drier, with more in the way of sunshine. A fine looking day for most of england and wales, probably Northern Ireland as well on friday, showers are still in the forecast for scotland, particularly affecting northern and Western Areas. Temperatures for most between 16 and 21 degrees, but i will show you something i have not shown you for the whole of the month. An area of high pressure, we have not seen one of these at all in june, but this one is arriving in time for the weekend, and it means that for most of us the weather should be dry. I say most because there will be quite a bit of cloud for the Western Hills of scotland, threatening a few showers to coasts and hills, away from that it is a dry start to the weekend with some decent spells of sunshine. The sunshine probably quite hazy at times, and those temperatures are coming up, hires for many of us between 18 and 22 celsius. Similar Weather Forecast for most of us on sunday, as we look at a dry weekend. High pressure is still there. However, you cant help but notice this area of low pressure starting to approach our western shores. Weatherwise, on sunday, for much of england and wales it is another dry day with some sunshine. The cloud could thicken for northern england, a bit of rain arriving across Western Areas late on, more especially towards the evening time, and an improvement in the weather in scotland. A dry day for most areas with some warm june sunshine. Beyond that, as we had on into monday, that area of low pressure moves closer, and we will start to see some heavy and we will start to see some heavy and thundery outbreaks of rain breaking out. The exact position of rain is open to some degree of uncertainty but because the rain could be heavy, we could see some impacts from that in terms of localised surface water flooding on monday. Perhaps some hot sunshine towards south east england. Temperatures could reach 27 degrees if that weather front stays away. Beyond that we are looking at the jet stream, and this is a classic block pattern, where the ridges and blocks in the jetstream dont move very far or very fast, and that means our very far or very fast, and that means oui weather very far or very fast, and that means our weather pattern once again thisjune means our weather pattern once again this june is going means our weather pattern once again thisjune is going to get stuck. We are stuck with our area of low pressure to the south west of the uk. It is a little bit different from last time, we will start to dragon some of this hot and humid airfrom the continent, mixing it with cooler air coming end of the atlantic, and they are the ingredients to make some big storms. For some of us it could get very warm if not hot, humidity levels picking up and they will power some torrential and thundery downpours, bringing the risk of some localised surface water flooding into bringing the risk of some localised surface waterflooding into next week.
