Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With us are the broadcaster John Stapleton and Nicola Bartlett the Political Correspondent for the daily mirror. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. The conservative leadership leads the metro, focusing on the fallout from this evenings tv debate which frontrunner borisjohnson did not attend. The daily mirror calls the uxbridge mp a chicken for not attending, and he was condemned by the other contenders. While the daily express reports that the other leadership rivals criticised the former london mayor for his absense. That story also makes the front of the guardian with the contenders using the debate to set out their vision for the future of the uk. Indias win over pakistan in the cricket world cup makes the front of the Financial Times millions worldwide watched the match making it one of the most viewed events in world sport. The i leads with theresa mays plan for a £27 million boost to education spending. The daily mail say nine in ten cannabis users and growers in some areas of england are being let off without a criminal charge, according to an investigation and the telegraph has the picture released today fathers day of the duke and duchess of sussexs son archie as prince harry celebrates his first as a dadso, the conservative leadership contest makes most of tomorrows front pages. Will start with this. So gas, hamlet with no prints. Channel 4 did a good report on this with no prints. Channel 4 did a good report on this yes, hamlet with no prints. We did get a bit of contention between the various candidates, but no points no price. As he said, what does he have to fear . If you wont face five of his own mates in a Television Studio with a fairly tame, polite audience, what chance does he stand in front of the 27 eu countries, in front of trump, angler merkel or macron . Angela merkel. And you say he is not going to the hustings tomorrow . Yes, againa going to the hustings tomorrow . Yes, again a no show, and clearly he is the frontrunner in this race. Ijust think it is his to lose and if you we re think it is his to lose and if you were his team keeping him away from scrutiny kind of works in their favour. But the chicken. Yes, chicken boris. It evades pm leadership clash over fears that his record would be exposed. Yes. Well, pppin9 record would be exposed. Yes. Well, ppping up record would be exposed. Yes. Well, popping up all over the place with oui popping up all over the place with our chicken, we have, because he is a serial offender with not facing scrutiny, and there is so much to question him on. It is notjust his record as foreign secretary, you know, you had the story about Nazanin Zaghari ratcliffe earlier, but also his record as london mayor, and his big thing to the tory faithful is to say, i won labour london. The disparaging remarks about muslim women and homosexual men. He is welcome to his opinion but is he the sort of person who should be our next Prime Minister . Perfectly valid questions, and he is dodging them. White might do the people who are ultimately going to be out for him, assuming is in the last two, 160,000 conservative party members, do they care about that . This is the interesting thing. The thing i find most amazing about the situation regarding boris, a lot of people doubt seem to care and those 160,000, as you rightly point out, will in the end determine the next leader of the tory party and next Prime Minister, at least in the short term, and they are according to the research i have seen, predominantly male, middle class, living in the east or south of england, and have also been infiltrated by hardline brexiteers. The membership. Yes, perfectly legitimate for these people tojoin, but it has changed the complexion of that bout. If they know that boris johnson, you know, we must call him by his full name as we would with any one. Yes, why do we call him boris and everybody else. We are trying to stop that, which is why. Im sure he loves it lets look at the final paper on this particular subject, there you go, they are doing it, johnsens rivals compete to offer visions of britain beyond brexit. Jeremy hunt quoted on the same page saying the same as you, john, there, if he cant cope with his colleagues how will he cope with the eu 27 . Brexit did dominate this, but there were other elements, other subjects covered. Yeah, i think what was interesting is the candidates almost had to be pressed to talk about those other subjects. Christian guru murphy asked them the thing that was most important to them other than brexit. Krishnan guru murthy. They were kind of competing with ideas, people talking about social care, a big one for jeremy hunt. But it almost caught them off guard, these other things, andi them off guard, these other things, and i think that is what is really lacking, the vision. I found the five people standing there, without having to deliver much detail. It is not a criticism of the programme, the allocation of talent, they can do or say anything they like, but the most important thing for me was rory the tory, as he is now called, saying he thought social care in this country was a disgrace. Incidentally for me he won hands down. The audience thought so, as he got more applause than the rest of them put together, rory stewart. He said in his opinion social care in this country was a disgrace and sajid javid said i think weve cut back education too far stop either criticising themselves, exactly. And far more qualified to talk on these matters the knee, Robert Peston picked up on that on twitter tonight saying he had never heard a tory admit they had actually cut education, but sajid javid seemed to be saying they had and he was embarrassed by it. They keep repeating the line people funding has gone up and keep getting ticked off by the National Statistics authority so you will probably regret saying that. Like mikejeremy hunt was home secretary before social secretary, so you could have done something about social care butjeremy hunt was home secretary. Health secretary first of all, then minister of social care. Today he also went further than he has done on theJunior Doctors also went further than he has done on the Junior Doctors strike and admitted the way he handled that was wrong so admitted the way he handled that was wrong so there were a few very slight. I thought it got more interesting toward the end. But neither of you obviously can vote. Sigh ami neither of you obviously can vote. Sigh am i a fairly safe assumption, yes. Lets look at the i sigh am i a fairly safe assumption, yes. Lets look at the i yes, a fairly safe assumption. Theresa may trying to make sure she leaves with something to her name other than the brexit. Something to her name other than the brexit. Yes, weve had something to her name other than the brexit. Yes, weve had a kind of series of announcements, we had her announcement on Climate Change recently, talking about education. She is also talking about Mental Health and she is kind of trying to go back to the things she introduced when she first came into being Prime Minister, but when you look at the detail on this, there is not a lot to go on. The Mental Health pledge, a lot is about getting teachers to do more to identify the kind of Early Warning signs with pupils and so Early Warning signs with pupils and so on, but not a lot of funding. The funding has already been announced last year as part of the boost to the Health Service so i think for a lot of people it will ring quite hollow, the last few. Dying gasps of her premiership. The second point, the battle for the £27 billion spending on education to be remembered for far more than brexit, but where is that money going to come from, has she indicated that . Ella not as far as i have seen. That battle implies, what she is arguing with the chancellor, not as far as i have seen. It implies she should have seen. It implies she should have won any argument on this. Lets look at the daily mail, cannabis laws up in smoke, an exclusive story, they say, where nine in ten users and growers are let off without a charge by some police forces. This could reflect to make things for me. Lets not forget the police force in england and wales have been cut back by 20,000 people and that was the work of theresa may when she was home secretary, and now of course they are talking about reinstating some if not all of those. That could partly be the reason, the police just dont have the time to prosecute people in this situation. We know that for a long time it is have not prosecuted in many cases for possession of cannabis, just for trading and dealing. This takes it into a different league, though, if they are effectively turning a blind eye to people growing. And many people would argue, why shouldnt they . Because it is arguably less harmful than knee smoking cigarettes, as i used to do, and drinking alcohol, as i still do, etc, and it has many medical benefits. We have spoken a lot about drugs in recent weeks, largely the tories and their personal use of them, but cannabis is interesting, because as you said possession has not been treated as a serious crime for a long time. Is this people growing for their own use . Presumably not those people growing in significant quantities to supply, growing in significant quantities to supply, and it seems to be part of this wider issue of how we treat drugs in this country, which i think is more and more there is a consensus it is not working. If this isa crime, consensus it is not working. If this is a crime, as it is, if there are serious concerns about cannabis, this isnt really treating it in the proper way. And it is across the country by the looks of things as well. But the potency of some of the strains of cannabis. Yes. Available these days, so much stronger than it was 30 years ago, and it can be related to some quite serious health. I would like to know more and i think later on we will get the rest of the story beyond the front page but i would like to know a bit more, i mean, how big are these . The picture the other day of an old cinema, did you see that . I think it might be somewhere in south london that had been laid derelict, turned into a bingo hall, and entire cinema dont like it was full of cannabis. A great big green house. Am i cricket . Hong kong first. Telling me off again. Not so fast. Hong kong protesters on the ft call for the axing of the resignation bill and carry lands resignation. This law has already been suspended, but that is not enough for these protesters. They wa nt enough for these protesters. They want assurances it is going to be com pletely want assurances it is going to be completely withdrawn. Want assurances it is going to be completely withdrawnlj want assurances it is going to be completely withdrawn. I think it is astonishing looking at some of the pictures, these mass. They claim 2 million. Really quite striking, and to see the kind of strength of feeling on this. That is kind of a bit of a win for the protesters at the moment, but as you say they will keep pressing, they are not going to go away on this issue i dont think. Like my quite extraordinary as well that carrie lam, the chief executive, apologised for the people and it is quite extraordinary. She also apologised for bringing in the law in the first place. She is on the ropes. White not be happy about that. Not at all. The protesters argue this will used as an excuse to grab the Political Prisoners and take them back to china where they will not face our kind ofjustice china where they will not face our kind of justice anyway. China where they will not face our kind ofjustice anyway. Their argument, that the Hong Kong Government argument is that they dont have this kind of legislation to extradite people back to china, if they dont, then it could become a haven for criminals, it could be a big centre for criminal people. People with criminal intent. But, you know, it is clearly very, very unpopular. If it was 2 million people, that turned out on the streets, and we dont know, the police said it was far less, but if it was, it is a massive proportion of the people who live there. Get now. Thank you very much. Bowled over, they reckon a billion people watch this. That is what we claim and again we have no way of verifying that but they claim a billion people watched this game, india and pakistan, always a hot ticket and i think 0ld india and pakistan, always a hot ticket and i think old trafford holds about 25,000, Something Like that, and they had 50 times applications for the number of tickets 20 times applications. India walked it, basically, over300 runs when they departed and then it being manchester, and i can say this because i come from that part of the world, it rained. Pakistan went into bat and didnt do that well and in the end they had to readjust their target. Cricket aficionados will understand that. Always a big grudge between these two might. Yes, but a great atmosphere. That is it for this error. John and nicola will be back again at half past 11 for another look at the papers. Coming up another look at the papers. Coming up next, it is time for click giant alien heads, pokemon gyms, and massive queues to get into the Los Angeles Convention centre. For hard core gamers this can only mean one thing its time for the electronic entertainment expo. 0rjust plain old e3 to those in the know. Almost a quarter of a century on from the very first show, its now the premier event in the gaming calendar, with over 70,000 people making the annual pilgrimage to the show floor. Although, why they need a Rock Climbing Wall im not quite sure. And so we sent sent along our very own gaming gurus, kate russell and marc cieslak, to see what everyone will be talking about this year. This e3 is a little bit different, though, since 2017 the public has been allowed in, before that this was a Games Industry only affair. Usually, playstation and xbox hold giant computing press conferences to show off their latest software and hardware. However, playstation isnt attending e3 2019 at all. And that left xbox is the only big Games Company with an actual piece of hardware doing a press briefing. Get ready. In typically bombastic fashion, xboxs event is big and loud. Please welcome keanu reeves. Keanu reeves brought some star power to proceedings, turning on the charm. Youre breathtaking youre all breathtaking as it was revealed, hell be appearing in the highly anticipated cyberpunk 2077, which will be released in april next year. As well as this, we got glimpses of gears of war 5 and minecraft role playing spinoff minecraft dungeons. But in the battle between playstation, xbox, and nintendo for domination of the games console market, the biggest announcement wasnt a new game. Xcloud is microsofts new games streaming service, allowing xbox games to be played on a host of devices, like smartphones, by streaming the games visuals from a microsoft data centre. Im streaming a game using xcloud right now. This is actually an xbox 0ne console game that im playing on a mobile phone. Now, normally, of course, a mobile phone wouldnt be powerful enough to play a game like this one. The game itself actually being hosted on a console inside a server 400 miles away. The service will preview in october. There isnt any word on pricing yet, though. But while streaming movies and tv shows is fairly commonplace, Big Questions are being asked about this kind of technology and if games can be reliably streamed over domestic internet connections. One of the biggest comments that weve had from our readers on our site is about the performance and how fast the internet that you have at home is going to be able to support this kind of game streaming. You know, people are struggling to run 4k netflix, long youtube videos, and things like that. Are you going to be able to have the internet speeds to match that performance . Imagine streaming tv and movies as data travelling down a 1 way street in the direction of your television, computer, or mobile device. Streaming video games is a lot more complicated. Here we have a two way stream. In one direction we have the graphics, thats the on screen visuals, and then in the other direction we have the inputs that the player is making to control the game theyre playing. All of this has to happen incredibly quickly. If it doesnt, well, then the whole thing breaks down. Despite these reservations, Games Developers believe that although quality might sometimes be an issue, modern Home Networks can handle it. Companies tried in the past and weve been experimenting with them. I think what really changed is your connectivity in your home is better than ever. Those Internet Companies have built network data centres closer to your home to bring a lot of content already through video netflix, youtube, et cetera so we can rely on a much better infrastructure to bring the game. The second thing is that we learned how to adapt the game to your Network Conditions so that we can really make sure that even if your quality is a bit lower because of your network you can still enjoy the game as best as possible. Microsofts announcement comes after tech giant google caused a stir, signalling it wanted to get into gaming. Google says its new games streaming service, called stadia, could signal the end of the physical console. Googles making bold claims about stadia and no console required. Some people are saying that the console is dead, is that true . For us, weve learned that its always about gamers choice. Listen to what your customer wants. The industry has millions and millions of customers who look at the console experience that they have as something that is vital to their gaming experience. Were not here to try to take that away or tell somebody that the choices theyve made are wrong. Both microsoft and sony seem to be hedging their bets as a new more powerful playstation 5 console is already in the works and xbox has announced project scarlett, which will be capable of 8k graphics and will do away with load times due to processing grunt. And will be backwards compatible with the entire xbox library of games. And thats on the way for november next year. Games streaming may well be the future, but it isnt over for the physical console just yet. Welcome to in indie zone. With understated booths and a noticeable lack of queues, this is where you will find true originality on show. You must blend seamlessly into human society. The speaking simulator is about a robot whos trying to infiltrate humanity just by having conversations like were having now. So players have to manipulate the mouth and the tongue to make their words come out. And you have to do it very quickly. Because if you dont your face will start to explode, because youre a robot. And humans find that a little bit suspicious. Oh, my teeth are falling out. 0h oh no its all gone horribly wrong. Well, thats the way i end most e3s, to be honest. Its a place where you can sit down and talk about art. Earthnight is a hand painted dragon apocalypse, 2 d platformer, love letter to classic games like mario and sonic and old arcade games. Its a i dont know its a procedurally generated nightmare, i guess. Everything is trying to kill you. But everything is really beautiful. Youre so close you are so close yes now youre a dragonslayer. I am a dragonslayer do you have a painting you would like to play with . Um, yeah, lets go with the scream. All right. Sounds good. We have a minute and a half to try and recreate the painting. A bit of that there and, um. 0hhhh. 0r take a detour into alternative pop culture. Boyfriend dungeon is a dating simulator dungeon crawler mash up. Basically, your weapons turn into Beautiful People and you take them out on dates to make them grow stronger. We love dating sims, but we always thought it would be really fun to kind of break it up with, like, some sort of action and that was combat for us. And, basically, we thought a lot of dating sims were really geared towards a certain kind of audience. It was very r rated, a lot of females wearing not a lot of things. So we kind of wanted to make a game that felt like it welcomed us and we have, like, male, female, non Binary Options in the game and you decide to date whoever you want and we also have a cat if you decide you want to be single, cause, you can be single and still have a fulfilling life. I appreciate that. Yes a trip to the indie zone always reminds me that gaming isnt just about consoles and big fat pcs. Check out these. Blinks are smart tabletop game pieces and each one knows its own game. Its like a Nintendo Game cartridge and it can teach all the other blinks how to play the game. I will challenge you. We are playing mortals. Nice, smart. Purple. Victorious. Well played, kate. Watchdogs legion is set in a post brexit dystopian near future london. Had a good run there for a while. Now its all right. Bombings. And people thrown in cages like animals. A bleak surveillance state where abuse of technology has led to huge unemployment, a privatised nhs and massive levels of civil unrest. Its not a particularly flattering picture of britain. Before e3, i went behind the scenes at its developer ubisofts studios in canada. Studios in toronto, canada. The brexit vote happened, we were 1. 5 years into development and we settled on london as a location and an important decision for us was to address it had on and say yes, this is part of our world and backstory. Brexit in our game is not sort of the cause of the problems we are depicting in the game world the causes of brexit really are the causes of the problems in our world and that is really how we address it. In the game, the player assumes the role of an anti authoritarian hacker, recruiting a team of characters to help bring down the regime. A large area of london has been mapped in this game and every Single Person that you meet in the city streets is playable. As you interact with them, a unique character, personality and backstory is filled in for them by the games artificial intelligence. We have video games about the apocalypse, we have nuclear disasters, we have world wars and now we have brexit, which really means the rest of the world is looking at brexit as a legitimate disaster and its quite fascinating and the fact that its something that we should be taking seriously, its not something that is just happening on our stage, its on the world stage and that is particularly interesting and kind of scary. Developers, along with many people who play games, regard them as a 21st century art form which can and should deal with thought provoking content. Games are just another form of media and they are another part of our culture. We, as game developers, in my opinion, not only should do this we have a responsibility to do this, to make games speak to broader cultural issues at large, in order to not to educate but provide that context for people who choose to engage with games as their primary form of culture and entertainment. Art, movies, literature and music all tackle difficult and challenging subject matter. 0ften its a way of helping us better understand our world and it seems the same is true for videogames. Thats it for the short edition of click. You can find the long version on the iplayer. Behind us . Gaming cabinets. Bye bye hello again. Parts of the uk were hit with a real deluge last week.
