Talks to George Alagiah in talking books, in half an hour on bbc news. Good afernoon. Following huge protests, the leader of hong kong has suspended plans to introduce a new law that would allow extraditions to mainland china. The proposals have prompted big demonstrations, including one last sunday where organisers said more than a Million People took part. Our china correspondent Stephen Mcdonell reports from hong kong. And a warning, the report contains some flashing images. The large demonstrations just days ago turned into running street battles with the police. It would prove the turning point in this stand off. The Hong Kong Government has been forced to concede that its controversial extradition bill has prompted ill will and division here. And the announcement came that it would be shelved, at least for the time being. I now announce that the government has decided to suspend the legislative amendment exercise, restart communication with all sectors of society, do more explanation work and listen to different views of society. A vast array of opposition groups say the extradition bill means facing mainline chinese courts controlled by the communist party, which cant guarantee a fair trial, and they say carrie lam ultimately still wants it introduced. Translation hong kong people wont be cheated by the temporary suspension and carrie lams comments will only make us more angry. The city enjoys freedoms guaranteed when the former british colony was handed back to china. A key part of that is having an independentjudiciary, which is why, for many people, the fight against extradition is a fight for everything this place stands for, and its why they say they wont give up until the extradition proposal has gone for ever. Protests planned for tomorrow will go ahead, with some calling for carrie lam to resign. The government hasnt given up yet, so i think we still have to fight for what we want, because this is not the end. Delay of this bill may provide a truce for now, but with both sides digging in this relief of pressure could also only be temporary. Stephen mcdonell, bbc news, hong kong. Iran is almost certainly responsible for the attacks on two oil tankers in the gulf of oman, according to the foreign secretary, jeremy hunt. The us military released video footage yesterday which it said proved iran was behind thursdays attacks on two oil tankers, something iran has categorically denied. The labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn says theres no credible evidence iran is responsible, tweeting that the uk should ease tensions, rather than fuel a military escalation. Nazanin zaghari ratcliffe, the british iranianjailed in iran, has begun a new Hunger Strike in protest against her imprisonment. Her husband, back in the uk, also plans tojoin her on Hunger Strike. The mother of one has been detained for the past three years after being accused of spying by the iranian authorities, a charge she strongly denies, and sentenced to five years in jail. Our Political Correspondent nick eardley is in Central London net start off with something of a twitter spat taking place between jeremy hunt and Jeremy Corbyn. Lets start. Over where the blame lies with iran. Yes, a huge row brewing over this, started yesterday, when the Foreign Office said it agreed with the united states, that iran was almost certainly behind those attacks on two oil tankers in the gulf of oman and in response to thatJeremy Corbyn has said, we need credible evidence, questioning whether that evidence, questioning whether that evidence was actually there yet. We know thatJeremy Corbyn is someone who has questioned uk Foreign Policy in the past, and he also said in the comments that he was saying that the rhetoric of the uk government was making conflict more likely. His shadow foreign secretary, double down on that message, on airwaves this morning, saying it was important that the uk made its own assessments, jeremy hunt has just arrived, i understand, a tory leadership hustings is taking place nearby, and has said that he thinks the labour party is in the grip of virulent anti americanism, a huge conflict between the two parties. News also regarding Nazanin Zaghari ratcliffe, update us on that, please. The situation for Nazanin Zaghari ratcliffe and her imprisonment in iran has been at the heart of some of the tensions between the uk and tehran, in recent yea rs. Between the uk and tehran, in recent years. The foreign secretary was with her husband this morning, sending out a message on social media that the Iranian Regime now needed to show some compassion, and let her free. Needed to show some compassion, and let herfree. No needed to show some compassion, and let her free. No signs that has happened so far, interestingly, the foreign secretary would not talk about his predecessor, boris johnson, someone whose comments about her activities in iran have been blamed in the past for her imprisonment being extended. Would not criticise borisjohnson on that. Borisjohnson himself has been at this venue this morning, he would not speak to us about the case. Tell us not speak to us about the case. Tell us what is going on at that venue, at the hustings, taking place in Central London. Boris johnson is the man to beat now absolutely in the conservative leadership race, miles ahead of everyone else when it comes to the number of mps backing him, we are told he got a really good reception in there, hard for him to leave, his supporters say, so many people wanted to get a picture with him. The other candidates coming very strongly, as they arrive this morning, saying that a coronation, not going to the membership with the last two candidates, the tory membership, to let them have a say, would be a bad idea. And i ask the International Development secretary, rory stewart, if he was concerned . Yes, that would be a disgrace. The public deserve a chance to look at these leaders, the members of the conservative party particularly, they deserve to have a choice. We should have learnt from the last time round. Coronations are not helpful to the democratic process. Borisjohnson is helpful to the democratic process. Boris johnson is going helpful to the democratic process. Borisjohnson is going to be on the ballot, they want to be the person to go up against him, sajid javid, home secretary, saying exactly that, he thinks he has the back story to do it, jeremy hunt, foreign secretary, who came second in the ballot of mps, was pretty punchy, as he arrived, saying, that in 2016, the front runner was correlated, that was theresa may, look what happened there, not a great outcome for the party, wants to be more like david cameron, who was behind voting with mps back in 2005, came from behind to win the conservative leadership. The message that the others want to get out is there is still all to play for, and there is one man they are chasing, boris johnson. The health secretary, matt hancock, has ordered what he called a root and branch review of hospital food after two more patient deaths were linked to a listeria outbreak. A total of five people have now known to have died. Production has been halted of the sandwiches and salads thought to have caused the outbreak. Leigh milner reports. Five people have now died after eating hospital sandwiches and salads containing listeria. Two lost their lives here at the manchester royal infirmary, another at aintree hospital. Its not yet been revealed where the other two patients died, but Public Health england has confirmed that seven trusts across the country have been affected. The Food Standards Agency ourself are trying to identify how this could have got in to the food chain. That is going to take some time to do. But what we have done is taken steps to make sure that the product is no longer distributed and therefore the public and the nhs patients are safe. The health secretary, matt hancock, has now called for a review of nhs food. In a statement, he said. I have been incredibly concerned by this issue and strongly believe listeria typically causes mild food poisoning, but can prove fatal if people are already seriously ill. The first patient affected showed symptoms on the 25th of april. Suspect salads and sandwiches were withdrawn on the 25th of may. Public Health England first warned about the outbreak on the 7th ofjune. The good food chain, which is being linked to the outbreak, has since voluntarily ceased production. As investigations continue, Public Health england insist any risk to the public remains low. Leigh milner, bbc news. Exam board edexcel has launched an investigation into how part of an a level maths paper was leaked online. Blacked out images of two questions were shared on social media ahead of the exam yesterday. Pearson, which runs edexcel, said the images were circulated in a very limited way. It reassured students no one would be advantaged or disadvantaged and they would not have to re sit the paper. Joining me now from waddesdon in buckinghamshire is mary wagland, one of the students who sat the maths paper. You sat the paper, how did you feel coming out of it . I tried my hardest, maths is not my strong point, but i have worked very hard over the past two years and i had logged on to the Student Forum to see how everyone else found it, about the answers we had, that is when i found out that paper had been leaked. On the student room and it was heartbreaking, you have put so much effort in, for someone to cheat and disadvantage you, it is really hard. What do you make of the response from edexcel, that no student would be advantaged or disadvantaged, do you have confidence in that . I do not, they are not acknowledging how widespread this issue is at all, evenjust by mentioning it was only two blacked out images, that is not the case, i am underthe out images, that is not the case, i am under the impression it was the entire paper. I have seen multiple screen entire paper. I have seen multiple screen shots of group chats with the whole paper in, from the morning of the exam, but also, ed excel were aware of the tweets a full day before, before they were leaked, on the friday evening. On the thursday evening, surrey, and we sat the paperon evening, surrey, and we sat the paper on the friday afternoon, sol think they had an opportunity to do something about it and they did not. Looking at their history, their papers have been leaked for the past three years. You would have thought they would be able to come to a solution by now. Are you aware of what is going to happen next, do you know if you will have to reset the paper, have you heard anything from the exam board orfrom paper, have you heard anything from the exam board or from your school . The exam board have given a very brief statement saying, we will not have to resit the exams. Which, i believe, because of the enormous expense it would cost, but, i dont see how they can ensure that we are not disadvantaged as students. Given that this is a new specification, a linear spec, that paper was one third of our grade, that is quite a contributor, that is why so many people are upset, you cant tell how many people have seen this. And i dont see how ed excel are going to be able to catch every single person. Im going to take you forward , person. Im going to take you forward, august, is that right, when the results come through . How are you going to feel, when you get that result, and you have worked so hard. Like you said, i understand there was some questions on their that you would only have been able to answer if you had studied higher maths. How will you feel if you dont get the grades you would have liked to have received . As i said, i am one of those students, maths is not a natural ability to me, sol those students, maths is not a natural ability to me, so i have worked really hard, as many other people have, over the past two years. So, full results day, for me, it is going to be a big date of whether i am able to achieve my target and whether my university will take me. I have been more stressed since the finished than i was during them, because ed excel failed to acknowledge just how widespread the magnitude of this issue is, and if we come to results day, and i have not received, have not accepted my offer from university because of an exam board, not only putting further maths into our exam but also i feel the way they wrote the exam was very tailored to a further maths student. Which is someone, as me, who only did single maths, i did feel disadvantaged from it. And so if i have to suffer because of that, it is going to be heartbreaking. Because i cannot resit this exam, i will not, i do not want to go through another year of that stress, i dont know what i will do if i dont reach my grades. All very understandable, how you are feeling, but good luck, good luck for august and your further but good luck, good luck for august and yourfurther studies but good luck, good luck for august and your further studies at university. Thank you. Nearly 300 more homes are being evacuated in lincolnshire because of fears a river could burst its banks again. People have already been moved to safety from a hundred properties in wainfleet near skegness after the river steeping overflowed. The raf flew in tonnes of gravel to try to repair the breach, but new areas are now under threat. Our correspondent Michael Cowan has spent the morning in the town. It was after the river steeping broke its banks after two months of rainfall fall into days that raf Chinook Helicopters were flown in to fill the burst banks with 270 tonnes of sand bags, good news when they said that had stopped the flooding and river levels were starting to recede. But, people here still do not know when they can get back into their homes, and now fire crews work across the county, to feverishly pump water out of those affected houses. This is a very difficult situation for a close knit local community. Two teenagers have been killed in london in separate attacks within minutes of each other. Police are investigating after one was stabbed in wandsworth, shortly before 5pm yesterday afternoon. Another was shot in plumstead. Police have made arrests in connection with each death. The leader of hong kong backs down indefinitely after mass protests over their controversial extradition law to mainland china. The political row intesifies over gulf tanker explosions, two senior cabinet ministers accuse Jeremy Corbyn of not backing britains interests by questioning if theres credible evidence for the attacks. A major review of hospital food after the deaths of five patients from listeria is announced in england. The italian film and opera director Franco Zeffirelli has died at the age of 96. In a career which spanned over 60 years some of his best known work included the taming of the shrew starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and hamlet with mel gibson and glenn close. Lizo mzimba looks back at his life operatic music Franco Zeffirelli made his name as an opera director, on stage and occasionally on screen. Opera taught him how to deal with highly strung and highly talented performers. It is a simple as that, holding their hands. Really dealing with vulnerable people. Really charming little kids. They cant believe their luck and they are afraid. His experience proved useful when he made a film with a famously temperamental couple, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. His film version of romeo and juliet was nominated for an oscar but was controversial. Olivia hussey, then just 15, appeared topless. Franco zeffirelli, who started out as a stage and screen designer, was sometimes attacked for Self Indulgence and sentimentality. But jesus of nazareth, made for television, showed a different and more austere side to his work. If my kingdom were of this world, my followers would have fought to prevent me from being captured. In 2004, he was given an honorary knighthood. He had always been an anglophile. In terms of the country, i would like to see it married with my country. To make this marriage happen with my work. Such a traditional honour meant a lot to a director renowned for his love of formality, opulence and beauty. A huge Cannabis Factory has been discovered inside a disused bingo hall in kettering. Police raided the building in the centre of town and found around 2000 plants, and a sophisticated hydro ponics system to water the plants. They saids the factory could produce drugs with a street value of nearly two Million Pounds a year. What has surprised me is how criminally audacious this has been, it is in the middle of a town centre location, normally you get these in industrial type warehouses, isolated locations. But this is quite sophisticated, this set up. People from black, asian and other minority ethnic communities are more at risk of developing some cancers and other life limiting illnesses, such as kidney failure and type 2 diabetes. Theyre also less likely to access, or be offered, Hospice Care Services and now new government funded study aims to increase take up rates across england. Our Community Affairs correspondent, Adina Campbell can explain. Are you comfortable . This retired businessman was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma 2. 5 years ago. Part of his healthcare planning includes coming here to his local hospice in luton. A service he and many others wouldnt normally consider. The concept the Asian Community have of hospice is a place you go to die. I didnt want to come here, there was a certain nurse at the health centre, she said, just try it. And then come and tell me. Im so grateful that i came, and its made my life a lot more comfortable. A new two and a half year study, the first of its kind in the uk, will now look at the improvements needed to encourage more people from asian, black and other minority groups accessing this type of care, using more than £a00,000 of government funding. There has been quite a lot, relatively quite a lot of research about establishing that people from minority ethnic communities are disadvantaged and the end of life, theres not a lot about what those disadvantages look like, in terms of health outcomes. There are many reasons for a low take up of Hospice Care Services by these communities. Including cultural, language and religious differences. And often families take on the full responsibility of caring themselves. But some doctors are also unlikely to recommend this kind of support in the first place. Because of a lack of understanding or fear they may cause offence. The uk is set to become one of the worlds most ethnically diverse countries over the next 30 years or 0. Take leicester, for example, and this busy cosmopolitan high street. We hear all the time about the pressures of an ageing population. But theres also an increasing need to ensure our Care Services also reflect and serve a wide range of cultural groups. These women in birmingham were brought together through a Hospice Service which cared for them and their children before they died. I didnt know what a hospice was, i didnt have understanding because i had a child before who passed away, whose life was mostly spent in childrens hospital. The quality of life of one individual is so important to embrace, that we need to look at community resources. We learn a lot and now we try to give other people information. The results of the new study will be published in 2021. Researchers say it will help develop real change for ethnic minority groups all over the uk. With Specialist Training for those working in our Care Services. Tens of thousands of cricket fans are converging on manchester this weekend as india take on pakistan in the world cup. Both sides have large british fan bases and there were half a million ticket applications for the match, meaning old trafford which has a capacity of 25,000, could have been sold out 20 times over. The game is expected to attract a worldwide audience of over half a billion, making it one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Secunder kermani has been speaking to some of the many pakistanis who will be watching the game. There were cheers as pakistan took on australia earlier this week. But the night ended in disappointment for these fans in islamabad as their team narrowly lost. The passion inspired by matches against india, though, is on another level. Is it a big deal to beat india . Its a pretty big deal, and notjust because its india versus pakistan, but because, you know, like, real madrid versus barcelona, its sport rivalry so that makes it very exciting as well. Sundays game will be the first between the neighbours since a conflict in february that saw pakistan shoot down and capture an indian pilot. Im sorry. Im not supposed to tell you that, sir. This advert, spoofing his interrogation video in which he politely refused to answer questions, whilst sipping tea, has attracted both laughs and some criticism. You can leave now. 0k, sir. For most fans, though, cricket is a rare opportunity to unite the two nations. I think primarily we have the same culture and i think cricket can be used as a bridge between the two countries, for peace and for stability throughout the subcontinent. I think irrespective of who wins, at the end of the day, a good game and peace is what matters most. Pakistan india games have at times produced some of crickets greatest moments. Players know tens of millions will be watching. Theres a massive amount of pressure, and now that India Pakistan games dont happen so frequently, theres more pressure. I feel someone who is in good form would probably be looking forward to doing well against india, because if you do well against india, you could be a hero overnight. Come sunday, grounds like this will be deserted. Because of tensions between the two countries, it has been years since pakistan and india have been able to play against each other in front of a home crowd. Cricket fans will hope that can change some day soon. This weekend marks the 100th anniversary of one of the most important milestones in aviation history the worlds first non stop transatlantic flight. The journey byjohn alcock and arthur brown lasted more than 16 hours. Phil mackie reports on how the centenary is being marked. Newsreel they take off in their vickers vimy from newfoundland, 1900 miles of atlantic between them and ireland. They had an unsteady start in newfoundland, and an undignified finish in an irish bog, but it was a landmark journey in the history of aviation. John alcock and Arthur Whitten brown survived Dangerous Missions in the first world war, only to risk their lives again. They returned as heroes and won a £10,000 prize, worth closer to half a million today. They flew in a vickers vimy. This is one of only three still in existence. Its in the raf Museum Reserve collection, where it has been disassembled like a giant model kit. Theyd flown many Risky Missions before. The chances of survival if things went wrong were pretty slim. Even if they survived crashing into the sea, really the north atlantic will kill you very quickly through hypothermia. But they were still willing to take the risk . They were still willing to take the risk, yes. To get a sense ofjust how difficult this journey was, you really have to look in the cockpit to see how cramped it was, basic instruments, and think that brown, in the navigator seat at one point had to climb out over the fuselage to clear ice off one of the gauges. They couldnt have done it without this the rolls royce eagle engine that propelled them across the atlantic. One of the first things alcock and brown did was send a telegram to thank the company. The engine will form the centrepiece of a new museum in its home city of derby. We want to hear from people who are connected with the making of this object. You may have had grandparents or parents who were involved in the manufacturing and design of this, and we want to tell their stories in our new museum. Rolls royce engines still power transatlantic planes, but it was the eagle that made the trip possible. A lot of people still believed aviation wasnt here to stay and didnt believe it would ever happen. Many had never seen an aircraft in 1919, even. And so it was very new, but this showed that it was here to stay and it was reliable, which was very, very important. In the century since they became the first to cross the atlantic in less than a day, their bravery has continued to be honoured. We are going to find out how the weather is looking now. You have some lovely pictures behind you, may bea hint some lovely pictures behind you, may be a hint of Better Things to come. That is stretching it a little bit. Lets get through the rain first and then well get to the promised
