Battery acid at politicians. And at 11. 30, well be taking an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers dawn foster and lucy fisher stay with us for that. Good evening. Boris johnson has overwhelmingly won the first round of votes to become the next conservative leader and Prime Minister. The former foreign secretary now seems almost certain to make it into the final two after picking up the support of 114 of his conservative colleagues. 10 candidates were in the running. Borisjohnson was way out in front followed byjeremy hunt and michael gove. Three candidates andrea leadsom, mark harper and esther mcvey didnt get enough support and were eliminated from the race, leaving seven mps to face more votes next week. Heres our Political Editor laura kuenssberg. Who was it to be . Mps voting behind the gates of the commons. I shall be voting for boris. I will be voting for boris. Borisjohnson. The person who might beat boris is boris himself. Get used to seeing this room where the Tory Committee announces results. Jeremy hunt, a3. And by a clear margin. Borisjohnson, 114. Murmurs of surprise at the numbers. Boris johnson way ahead, with 114 votes, almost certain to be in the final two. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt a clear second, onlyjust ahead of michael gove. Ten votes behind, brexiteer dominic raab. The home secretary and Health Secretary both tucked in after him. A fifth member of the cabinet, rory stewart, just makes the cut, but three others are knocked out. Will you top the ballot today, mrjohnson . So the numbers proved. Borisjohnson, whose reputation has sunk and risen like the sun, really is the frontrunner in this frenzy. This is a very strong result for boris and i think it really shows how he has united our party, bringing people together from all different sections our party, both remain, leave, but also people with different ideas as well. With no other break out candidate, despite the smile, the contest now is not about catching up with mrjohnson but grabbing the other spot in the final two. Boris did well today, but what the result shows is that when it comes to the members stage, im the one to take him on, and the argument ill be making is a very simple one. That if you choose me, ill be the first Prime Minister who has a background as an entrepreneur. I can negotiate a deal with the European Union that is a better way forward. Right now, none of the middle of the pack are giving up on the race. Morning even if they are huffing and puffing to keep up. We are going to succeed as a country. Whether former remainers in cabinet. And we have a dog called bailey that you might have seen recently on twitter. Or brexiteers who quit, they are all hoping to pick up votes from those who dropped out. We have got a strong base and we are looking forward to the next rounds. This is round one, so we are off and running, and looking forward to building on that support, particularly given the way the votes fell. The outsider candidate who just made the cut says he believes anything could happen. Are you, at this moment, really in a position where you, rory stewart, can see yourself moving into number 10 at the end ofjuly . Im much closer to it than i was four weeks ago, im closer than i was to it two weeks ago. We shall see. Politics can be a lonely old game. Those who lost out today put themselves on the line, but its the contest to be all of our Prime Minister, notjust some tory family business. I think its a fine result and lets see what happens on the next round. Have you spoken to your son . No, i havejust sent him something called a whatsapp, do you know about whatsapps . Havent heard of it, actually. Yeah, its a very modern thing. Theres a Long Distance to go, though. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, westminster. So what happens now . Tory mps vote again onjune 18th. Each candidate needs at least 33 votes to stay in the contest. The plan is that further rounds of voting will whittle down the remaining candidates tojust two by the 20th june. After that the tory Party Membership have their say. The name of the new Prime Minister will finally be announced in the week ofjuly the 22nd. 0ur Political Correspondent jessica parkerjoins us now from westminster. Seven candidates remain, but are some of them about to join forces . That is a good question. Boris johnson street to head regarding that 114 votes, more than double jeremy hunt. There was a meeting between two of the candidates, sajid javid and matt hancock. Sources close to matt hancock say he is mulling over whether to pull out in this race as it is at the moment, although things can change and its really important to stress this isnt necessarily done and dusted, as some people might say it is, a lot of people are seeing this race potentially as those candidates, the six aside from borisjohnson, vying for that second place spot. Look at is the because it is the final two. I think you are going to see a lot of conversations going on between those rival camps, whether they want to keep going, ploughing their own furrow or whether they wa nt to their own furrow or whether they want to perhaps look out whether they need to get behind one of the particular candidate, to bring their numbers together and create arrival to boris and propel someone into second place. Those are the kinds of conversations that are going to be going on over the next couple of days, head of that boat on tuesday where those candidates will have to drum of 32 mps in order to get through to the next round of voting. Growing pressure on borisjohnson to ta ke growing pressure on borisjohnson to take part in a tv debate. The six other candidates, you can see a pattern emerging, really trying to put a rush on borisjohnson by saying they will definitely commit to taking part in sundays tv debate and the following tv debate on the bbc. This is all after borisjohnson came under some criticism for not doing broadcast interviews as other candidates have and for not committing to those tv debates. I guess Team Boris Johnson committing to those tv debates. I guess team borisjohnson are going to be making a calculation, saying he is far out in front, does he need to ta ke he is far out in front, does he need to take part in these leadership debates. There is sometimes a suggestion that borisjohnson can be prone to gaps. They sometimes might see that as an unnecessary risk. What he does indeed turn up. Elsewhere in westminster, change of foot. We might call it political promiscuity. Chuka umunna, the previous labour mp, and one of those who enquired dramatic style quit the labour party due to serious concerns that he and others had withjeremy corbyns leadership. It is very pro eu and wants there to be another referendum. He and a number of collea g u es referendum. He and a number of colleagues left the labour party and teamed up with the three conservative mps who left the tory party. They formed change uk. Change uk didnt really seem to take off and it didnt garner as much of the vote as it might have hoped, and a number of people left change uk including chuka umunna and this evening he has announced that he is joining the liberal democrats. Evening he has announced that he is joining the liberal democratslj evening he has announced that he is joining the liberal democrats. I got the press release here. Chuka umunna joining the liberal democrats because he says it is at the forefront of a renewed progressive and Internationalist Movement in british politics. He says labour and the tories are committed to facilitating brexit. Its not a massive surprise i would say that his done this. The liberal democrats view on brexit does match with his own. Some people have been wondering where he might go after he left and of course, its a big coup for him but others will criticise chuka umunna for having jumped across a number of parties over the last few months so we will see how it all plays out in the morning but certainly the liberal democrats will be celebrating tonight. Jessica parker in westminster, thank you very much. The Foreign Office says it agrees with the assessment of the United States that iran was responsible for the attacks on the two tankers in the gulf. Dozens of crew members had to be rescued after the explosions on both vessels. Iran has denied being behind the attacks, which took place in one of the worlds busiest oil export routes. News of the blasts sparked a rise in oil prices. Heres our chief International Correspondent lyse doucet. This morning in the gulf, a First Oil Tanker set ablaze, ignited by an explosion. Crew members on this norwegian vessel were rescued by a passing cargo ship. These scenes filmed by irans navy. An hour later, another tanker, japanese owned, also hit by an explosion. Its still not clear what caused these latest attacks in one of the worlds busiest shipping lanes. Today in washington, unequivocal condemnation of iran. These unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to International Peace and security, a blatant assault on the freedom of navigation and an unacceptable campaign of escalating tension by iran. The attacks took place close to the strategic strait of hormuz, vital to world trade, where tensions have been mounting for months between regional rivals. On one side there are arab states including key us allies in the gulf. 0n the other side is iran. At its narrowest point, the strait of hormuz is just 21 miles wide, and there are two lanes for tankers to pass in opposite directions. A fifth of the worlds oil exports, almost 19 Million Barrels a day, passes through. So attacks on tankers can threaten oil supplies, drive up prices and fuel the tensions many worry could tumble towards war. This was meant to be a week of diplomacy. Japans Prime Minister, shinzo abe, is in tehran, hoping to help ease tensions, only to see them escalate. Today he met irans top leader, ayatollah khamenei. Iran calls the timing of these attacks are suspicious, and reject any responsibility. Iran is also blamed for this. An attack yesterday on an airport in saudi arabia, 26 injured. Yemens houthi rebels, aligned to iran, say this was their work. Two weeks ago, king salman called arab and Muslim Leaders to mecca, islams holiest site, urging them to condemn iran. Saudi officials told me then they dont want a war, but some sources spoke of a proportionate response. So whats next . Last month the us moved an Aircraft Carrier and bombers to the gulf. President trump says he wants to talk to iran. They wont, not while he imposes crippling economic sanctions. Everyone says they dont want a war, but everyone is on edge. Lyse doucet, bbc news. The public spending watchdog says that nearly two thirds of the people in england who have bought their homes through the governments help to buy scheme could have purchased a property anyway without help. The scheme, which was introduced in 2013 under david cameron, offers loans of up to 40 of the house price and requires only a 5 deposit. Heres our Business Correspondent coletta smith. Help to buy loans are popular very popular. More than 200,000 people have got a top up for their mortgage for a new build home. Hayley is one of them. For us to be able to buy this, yeah, it was huge. Weve no reason to move. This could be our forever home. The governments spending watchdog has now reviewed the whole scheme, and theres a lot to say about the three different groups whove been impacted. The National Audit office say nearly two thirds of those who got a loan would have been able to buy a house anyway. Thats true for hayley, but she wouldnt have been able to get this house. The houses we were looking at were sort of like terraces, doer uppers, mid terrace, maybe, probably only two bedrooms. It never entered my head that we could get something of this size or this nice. What percentage does the government own and what do you have to pay back . Yeah, so it is a little bit daunting when you look at the figures. Weve got a huge loan thats like separate to our mortgage, and it is quite easy to look at that and get worried. The report also points out that some of those the governments lent to have incomes of more than 100 grand a year. Two thirds of the take up is from households on incomes of less than £50,000, so its a very small fraction. Its1 in 25 have Household Incomes in excess of 100,000, and thats the reality of Household Incomes in parts of the country, particularly in london and the south east. The report says House Builders have been boosted by the extra government money sloshing round the system. With the big players like persimmon making a record £1 billion profit last year, with half of their sales coming from help to buy homes. Its easy to be cynical and suggest perhaps they were trying to help House Builders and their shareholders. Theyve certainly benefited since it was introduced in 2013. Theres undoubtedly been additional profit in the market, but thats not directly linked to help to buy. Its a function of the fact weve built as many homes as we have over the last five years. The governments spent £11 billion on this scheme so far. Its all in loans, of course, so they are hoping to get that money back, but its a lot of public money to have tied up in a scheme thats effectively underwriting the Housing Market at the moment. If the value of properties goes up then the government will make more money, but if it falls then the value of those loans falls, too, which leaves the government exposed. And thats the biggest concern for the spending watchdog. If things go wrong, we may all end up shouldering the cost of those 200,000 dream homes. Colletta smith, bbc news, in skipton. The headlines on bbc news borisjohnson emerges as the clear frontrunner to be the next conservative leader, after the first round of voting by tory mps. Three former ministers are knocked out, narrowing the field to seven. The uk hasjoined the usa in blaming iran for two suspected attacks on oil tankers in the gulf of oman one of the worlds busiest oil shipping lanes. The former labour and change uk mp chuka umunna joins the liberal democrats. He says hes been made to feel very welcome. The suspected white supremacist, brenton tarrant, has pleaded not guilty to all charges over a mass shooting at two mosques in christchurch in march. He now faces a total of 92 charges, after additional charges were added today. 51 people were killed and dozens more wounded in the attack. The judge today ruled that mr tarrant was fit to stand trail and that there were no issues rising from Mental Health assessments. A man found guilty of killing a woman in a speedboat accident on the river thames will find out next week if his manslaughter conviction will be overturned by the court of appeal. Jack shepherd was jailed for six years over the death of 24 year old charlotte brown, who died when the boat they were in capsized during theirfirst date. Shepherds lawyers say a mistake by police means his conviction for manslaughter by gross negligence is unsafe because police failed to caution him or offer him a solicitor. The bbc says a joke made byjo brand in its radio 4 show heresy will be edited out of future broadcasts, following complaints that it was an incitement to violence. The comedian was commenting on milkshakes being thrown over politicians and suggested using battery acid instead, but immediately qualified her remarks by saying she had no intention of doing any such thing. Sudans military rulers have tonight admitted that they did give the orders for an operation that led to the killing of more than 100 peaceful protestors ten days ago. The Un Security Council has condemned the massacre and called for an end to attacks on civilians. 0ur africa editor fergal keane has been talking to some of those who witnessed the atrocity first hand. The massacre had one aim to break the revolution by traumatising its supporters. The Rapid Support force militia was unleashed on peaceful protesters. In the weeks before, id seen how thousands believed that peaceful protest could end decades of military rule. Everybodys chanting, everybody just feels the sense of freedom. They have never felt before. And i feel i am very empowered. Its the sudan that i wanted to have. But in the dawn hours ofjune the 3rd, freedom was stolen. Now for the first time, some who witnessed the worst of the brutality are speaking. Translation there was a huge number of these soldiers, and there was very intense shooting. People who were getting shot and falling. Along with the shooting, there were people around us who were hitting us with sticks and whips and things, so we werent able to carry all the people who were shot. Ahmed was shot himself as he ran. Wasab al tahir was badly beaten when militia attacked a clinic. Only the intervention of the regular army saved his life. Translation i was beaten all over my body until i passed out. All the people with me had serious injuries. One of them was a doctor with broken ribs and arm. He was also hit on the head. At that point, they had already cocked their weapons, and were ready to shoot us inside the clinic. The Army Officers took them outside. If they hadnt arrived, we would have been executed. After the killings, the round ups began. The massacre scattered the opposition, but there are activists hiding out all over the city. We are on our way now to meet some of them at a safe house. These witnesses asked for their identities to be protected. The man on the bed was shot, and on his way to hospital when the militia stopped the ambulance. Translation there was another patient lying next to me. His stomach was open from one side to the other, and some of his organs were outside. One of the people with me said to them, this guys stomach is open, his intestines are out. He could die. They said, let him die. Then they hit the female doctor with a stick. The militia are also accused of rape. An ambulance driver witnessed the attack on what appeared to be a wounded woman being helped by an activist. Translation they were feeling her up. They were arguing over who gets her. Each one of them wanted to take her off the shoulder of our brother. Whats important is that they took her and they did what they did. At the end, we found out that the girl had been dead from the start, but they still didnt let her be. I told you i cannot describe 1 of what i saw. Death in all its forms, ugliness of all kinds. The details. The regime tonight denied any arrests took place, but it is refusing to allow an international investigation. Its left the revolution in trauma. Even women older than me, could be 50 or 60, they made them lie on the road and they beat them up. You saw this . Yes, i saw this, and then i stopped looking out the window. Ifeel guilty, actually, because im safe. This sudan of protest has been driven underground, but all ive met in the last few days still believe in peaceful change. After whats happened, that feels remarkable. Fergal keane, bbc news, khartoum. President trump has revealed that his press secretary Sarah Sanders will leave herjob at the end of the month. She has been a fierce defender of the president. Our north america editor jon sopel gave his assessment of her departure. She has had a turbulent relationship with the press, added to mulch with time. But she has been Donald Trumps kind of mouthpiece for the last 2. 5 years. She was meant to preside over the daily briefing. There has not been one for three and a half months. And i think what really compromise the relationship was when she was found to have lied to and because of the Mueller Report over the firing of the fbi director james comey. I met her in her office a couple of months ago and we were talking about what its like doing thejob and talking about what its like doing the job and they said how do you cope with the madness. And without missing a beat she said burban. They only think she was halfjoking. Two trains have been trapped by a landslip and flooding for several hours on the line between leicester and corby. Hundreds of passengers who were on board have been transferred to a coach in the last hour. Liam mccarthy was one of the commuters stranded for hours. Full disclosure. Are used to work for him in my radio leicester days. Nice to talk to you, but not under these circumstances. Tell us what happened. Im just these circumstances. Tell us what happened. Imjust about these circumstances. Tell us what happened. Im just about to get off the train in leicester, having got on it at three oclock this afternoon to go to london. I have not been to london. I have been stuck forfour, not been to london. I have been stuck for four, five, six not been to london. I have been stuck forfour, five, six hours, on a trainjust outside stuck forfour, five, six hours, on a train just outside corby station, flooding behind, and a land slip in front. As we took our diversion from leicester through to corby, because ofan leicester through to corby, because of an incident on the bridge, came up of an incident on the bridge, came up to corby and found a train that has been derailed. So we put their passengers on our train and then headed back to leicester to be cut off by floods, and then we went back emma carter by a landslide. So they have just been 500 people evacuated from this train using the original wooden ladder to get us out onto the trackside by fireman. And then walked along the track for a few yards and then down the embankment onto coaches. It has been an absolute nightmare. At least one person has taken ill on the train, because it was a bit claustrophobic for people on it. And we were stuck ina tunnel for people on it. And we were stuck in a tunnel for for people on it. And we were stuck ina tunnelfora for people on it. And we were stuck in a tunnel for a bit an hour. Does make for about an hour. Often people need feeding are given something to drink after all that time. We soon went after the water. The staff and the train were absolutely fantastic. You could not fault them. They were co nsta ntly you could not fault them. They were constantly keeping us informed. And i feel for the driver. Every time he had to move the train forwards and backwards he had to get out of the train, run the length of the train and get in, and then he was told to move it backwards, to get out of the train and go back again. There were quite a few people who were evacuated off the train onto our train, the northbound train as corby onto our train. At least they have had a dry note. They have not had the night they were expecting in night. Do you know what the impact will be on Train Services on that line, if it is flooding and a land slip is not easily cleared up. The line between corby and oakham, one is derailed in a few yards away there is another 125 for passenger luggage. It is going to take a day to sort that out, at least. Although it is not a major route. It is used for diversions, normally, for Engineering Works on the mainland and line. So hopefully it wont cause too much disruption. When are you likely to get home . Am just walking off the train la10 minute walking off the train la10 minute walk up the hill and i will be home. Iam glad walk up the hill and i will be home. I am glad to hear a walk up the hill and i will be home. I am glad to heara i am walk up the hill and i will be home. I am glad to hear a i am just walking off the train now, so a ten minute walk. He gave me a job ones. Britains oldest person, gracejones, has died at the age of 112 at her home in worcestershire. She was born in september 1906 and lived through 21 Prime Ministers and five monarchs. Her daughter, who is 80, said her mother, known as amazing grace, was very fit and active right up until the very end. Now its time for the weather with ben rich. Hello. If you are watching this in one of those parts of the uk that have had yet another wet day on thursday, you may well be wondering when will it end . The rain for some of us has been relentless. Parts of shropshire since the weekend have recorded over 150 millimetres of rain. It would normally take a couple of months to get that much rain. This is the satellite bit stop you can see all these different spirals of cloud that have been rotating around on top of the British Isles for the last few days. We had a very slow moving area of low pressure. It wasnt only wet during thursday. For some of us, underneath the cloud and rain, it was very cool indeed. Nine degrees was very cool indeed. Nine degrees was the top temperature of north east england. Things will begin to change over the next few days. It will turn a little bit warmer, quite a lot warmer for some of us. We will see a mixture of sunshine and showers. Still some more persistent rain for a time on friday, across wales, the midlands, pushing up across Northern England and eastern scotland. Away from these areas it is essentially sunshine and showers. East anglia and the south east may dodge most of the downpours and stayjust about right. With the wind is coming up from the south west those temperatures start to claim, 14 19 degrees. Low pressure will still be in charge on saturday, but the centre of the low is shifting its way westwards, so that will still introduce some showers or longer spells of rain at times. Hopefully not the torrential downpours of the last few days. Between the showers on saturday there will be some spells of sunshine. The winds generally coming from the south west and the temperatures 16 in glasgow, 19 in london. Some forget to 20 degrees. A similar story on sunday. Sunny spells and showers. Some of the showers, where they develop, could be heavy, could be thundering. Still some wet weather around. Some sunny breaks as well thundering. Temperatures 14 19, possibly 20 degrees. As we move out of sunday into monday, that area of low pressure continues to retreat north westward. High pressure continues to retreat north westwa rd. High pressure pressure continues to retreat north westward. High pressure tries to ta ke north westward. High pressure tries to take more control of the scene. It is likely to have the impact south and east. The further south and east you are the more dry weather and spells of sunshine. For Northern Ireland and scotland will see some showers, which could be heavy and buttery. Confirmation of those temperatures up to 20 degrees. Closer to where we should be at this time of year thundering. It looks like High Pressure will for a time slide its way northwards. We will see some dry weather, spells of sunshine. And we will start to introduce some even warmer air from the south. Tuesday could well be the warmest day of next week. We have had a lot of dry weather and spells of sunshine we have. Those temperatures, four summers, could get up to 23 24 degrees. Always a little cooler for the north and west. Not as cool as it has been the last couple of days. As we head towards the end of next week, there is some uncertainty. We could see heavy, thundery rain pushing up from the south. Then it looks like High Pressure will be fairly close by. That does mean more in the way of dry weather. Low pressure areas a lwa ys dry weather. Low pressure areas always threatening the north west. Here the greatest chance of seeing some
