Great with leinster, 95 caps for his country, forced to retire for his country. Darren has more on that beast from the east. Doesnt sound good, does it . Were going to find more snow falling and strengthening wind. The air is quite dry so it is fine powdery snow but that will change over the next few days. More later on. Also coming up a warm welcome, despite the weather, for the returning members of teamgb, back from south korea with a Record Number of medals. Iamat i am at Heathrow Airport terminal five where britains winter olympic team, the most successful ever, is due to land in the next 15 minutes. So, Jeremy Corbyn has put some clear blue water between his party and the governments position on brexit, saying a Labour Government would support a Customs Union with the eu after brexit. He said it would mean no tariff barriers, and no hard border in ireland. Its a change of policy which mr corbyn says puts peoples jobs and Living Standards before ideological fantasies. But, and its a very big but, none of this takes into account what the eu will think of all this. The real significance of what the labour leader has said may be on the domestic political agenda. If a number of tory rebels agree withJeremy Corbyn, that could spell real trouble for theresa mays government. Our Political Correspondent chris mason reports from westminster. Monday morning in coventry. Jeremy corbyn has come here to to talk brexit and spell out how his outlook is different from the governments. The leader of the labour party, Jeremy Corbyn. The backdrop at the university, the next generation of cars. A good example of industry, he said, reliant on european co operation. A mini will cross the Channel Three times in a 2,000 milejourney before the finished car rolls off the production line. Starting in oxford, it will be shipped to france to be fitted with key components before bringing brought back to bmws hams hall plant in warwickshire, where it is drilled and milled into shape. Once that process is complete, the mini will be sent to munich to be fitted with its engine before ending its journey back at the mini plant in oxford for final assembly. If that car is to be sold on the continent then many of its components will havecrossed the channel four times. The sheer complexity of these issues demand that we are practical and serious about this next stage. And so, he said. Labour would seek to negotiate a new, comprehensive uk eu Customs Union to ensure there are no tariffs with europe and to help avoid any need whatsoeverfor a hard border in northern ireland. Goods can then move freely without tariffs around the block but members cannot do their own trade deals. The eu also has a Single Market that allows capital, services and people to move freely around member states. The government says we will leave the Customs Union and the Single Market after brexit. Back here at westminster, whatJeremy Corbyn was saying about a Customs Union matters because there may well be a majority of mps in the commons he broadly agree with his outlook and that could eventually force the government to change its position. For their part, the government is repeating that doesnt want to be in a Customs Union after brexit and downing street has confirmed this morning that the Prime Minister will hold a special Cabinet Meeting on thursday ahead of her big speech which is taking place on friday and mrs mays ministers have repeated that they think mr corbyns outlook on a Customs Union is a mistake. If were in a Customs Union that means we have to be rule takers, we cannot negotiate trade deals with the rest of the world and these are things that we absolutely have said that we need to rule out if were going to deliver a smart brexit can ijust tell you this, i find it fascinating to see the labour partys hokey cokey on brexit, were in, were out, well shake it all about. And some within labour fear it wouldnt amount to a proper brexit or be achievable. There is no way that it could be delivered and i wish it were, if he could deliver it, it would be terrific if he could but he knows what they are like in brussels. It is a reminder that both of our biggest Political Parties are guaranteed to alienate some as they choose the type of brexit they want but there is now clear blue water between labours instincts and the governments. How will the eu react to the labour leaders speech . Lets talk to our adam fleming who is in brussels. Asi as i was saying as i introduced this, it is a huge butt of all this because the eu will have the final say. Technically the eu only negotiates with the uk government at the place in the time. It is considered interesting but theoretical here in brussels. When theoretical here in brussels. When the European Commission have their conference as they do every day, all the questions were internal matters and just one question was put about corbyns speech and there was no a nswer corbyns speech and there was no answer which was frustrating. Some of the principles we know the eu has about the brexit negotiations we can pick out two things. The eu is concerned about what they called a level playing field, which they see is fairand no level playing field, which they see is fair and no undercutting of one side by the other and they are concerned about state page which is the idea of the government intervening in certain areas of the economy with loads of money that would benefit the uk at the expense of the eu. A Prime MinisterJeremy Corbyn would want to do that and convince the eu that it was ok for him to do that. The other big thing that the eu are talking about is they do not want to uk after brexit that has a massive influence and as a constraint on what the eu itself can do so again Prime Minister corbyn would have quite a big job to convince the eu that the uk should have a big say of the trade deals at the eu was doing after brexit. There isa the eu was doing after brexit. There is a too tricky things that he would have to contender with. In terms of the brexit talks that are happening right now, there are technical talks happening at the moment. Officials are meeting today to speak about the transition period and implementation stage and enable talk about governance which is about how you how you carry on. Lets get more reaction from that speech now. The leader of the liberal democrats, said vincent cable, is with us now. Do you agree with the pragmatism . Im not sure we can say that it is pragmatic. It is a small direction in the way of sanity but he is still splitting hairs and saying that we should be part of a Customs Union rather than the Customs Union that we currently belong to actually provides the stability that the car industry and others enjoy. On the bigger issues around the Single Market he is still in virtually the same position as theresa may. Arguing that we can have our cake and eat it. Except in his case he wa nts to and eat it. Except in his case he wants to pick out the red cherries rather than the blue raisins, the bit that might impede a was a socialist economy but he hasnt moved very much. He has moved a little and maybe in westminster terms that is positive but we shouldnt overstate what has happened. Boris johnson says this is a white flag eu before the talks get underway . That is pathetic rhetoric. The truth of the matter as there are some very real problems. Our major Manufacturing Industries and they are right that they highlighted this morning, also aerospace and food manufacturing, they are desperately anxious to know there will be a Customs Union arrangements because they dont have it then many british facilities will no longer be viable and suffer extreme competitive disadvantage is that they do need clarity. It is not a question of waving a flag, it is acknowledging the realities of business. What borisjohnson are saying is that this policy, which enables take back control of our borders policy. He is right that we would no longer be able to negotiate global trail deals, isnt it . But this has been a lwa ys deals, isnt it . But this has been always accepted that weakens sign more deals as a result of being part of the European Union. We have large numbers of preferential trade deals with members of the commonwealth, countries such as canada and korea. We would lose those if we left the Customs Union. We would be in a worse position. Exporters would be ina worse position. Exporters would be in a worse position than they are now. All this fancy about, why dont we have a special trade deal with america, we havejust seen we have a special trade deal with america, we have just seen this morning the kind of things the americans are which is cutting food standards so we can import less high quality milk along with beef hormones, chlorinated chicken and the rest and cherry picking the health service. This so called freedom to sign trade deals is very much an illusion. Thank you for joining us. Just to bring you some breaking news that were getting from leicester. We arejust breaking news that were getting from leicester. We are just hearing from leicester. We are just hearing from police that a fifth person has died asa from police that a fifth person has died as a result of an explosion. This happened on hinckley road in leicester. We can show you the devastation created by that explosion. Police are still concerned that there are some unaccounted for but a confirmation that a fifth person is to have died in that blast in hinckley road in leicester last night. The Cabinet Office minister David Lidington has set out the governments preferred position on devolution after brexit with a promise to strengthen and enhance powers for wales, scotland and northern ireland. Mr lidington said the vast majority of powers returning from brussels will start off in the devolved nations, not in whitehall, and he explained how the government would decide who got what powers. How wales Political Editor is where mr lillington has been speaking. Mr lillington has been speaking. Mr lidington has been saying. This is about the stall between the uk government and the devolved administrations. Frankly there has been little progress for months and months and these talks although there have been some Significant Developments last week in the negotiations. A quick word of what theyre talking about here is there is whole raft of regulations and powers that will be transferred to the uk and a quick word of what theyre talking about here is that there is a whole raft of for example subsidies behind the farm payment in brussels and afterwards the governments in scotland in edinburgh are saying they should go directly to those administrations and the uk government is saying we need to have what is, they are proposing a Holding Pattern and those powers should temporarily reside at westminster and has not been good enough for the governments in cardiff and edinburgh and what we saw last week from mr lidington is a proposal from many more of those powers to go directly to the devolved administration, although it should be said that a Record Number of them will still go to westminster so of them will still go to westminster so still a great deal of work to go through to get some kind of resolution. In tandem to all of that, i think what we had in a speech in the past hour is a strong unionist message if i could call it that, in a sense that we talk a lot about the importance of the Single Market in the European Union in the brexit negotiations and what he tried to do today will show how important the Single Market of the uk is. Scotland and wales for example. An example is that a cheese seller in wales could do that in bristol without any trade barrier. Eight out of ten lorries and wales are destined for the british economy so are destined for the british economy so that is for the isa is a flavour of g i sense
