The players become stars, not stars that have a lot of gold around their neck and fancy cars, but stars who are warm, loving, caring. The football season is just starting in sweden. Ostersunds have only played one cup match so far, but you learn to warm up quickly around here. So arsenal will be next into the chiller, and they will, of course, be big favourites, but they wouldnt be the first side to come to this remote little town and find that they suddenly freeze. Patrick gearey, bbc news, ostersund. Time for a look at the weather. Heres stav da naos. Ill start with the rain and snow radar, because i want to draw your attention to where the snow is falling, north and west scotland, very heavy in places. The blue showing where the rain is. A widespread frost, and watch out for ice over the northern half of the uk. Into friday, the best of the weather further south closer to an area of High Pressure near the near continent. Lots of sunshine. Western parts of scotland, particularly the north west, breezy in Northern Ireland. Cold in the north, not quite as cold as recently. For the weekend, things look pretty good. High pressure across the south, so plenty of sunny spells. More cloud in the north and west, with a fuel showers, and you can see temperatures range from between eight to ii between eight to 11 degrees, so a bit milder across the board. A reminder of our main story this lunchtime the former football coach Barry Bennell has been convicted of a total of 43 counts of child sex abuse against 11 victims. On bbc one, we nowjoin the bbcs news teams where you are. And it is time for some sport on bbc news. Britain could claim its first medal of these Winter Olympics after skeleton slider dom parsons put himself in a good position half way through his competition. Hes in fourth after two of his four runs. Just three hundredths of a second from the bronze medal position with his final two runs in the early hours of tomorrow morning our time. A few mistakes on the first one, probably a bit of race tension, ended up over driving a couple of bits, ended up off line. It is what it is. I am still in the mix, so i will take that. The curlings back on today with the round robin matches continuing. The mens team responded to their defeat to defending champions canada with a win this morning against japan. Skip kyle smiths hammer on the final end was enough to win 6 5. It is something we talked about, to try to be consistent throughout the entire game instead of having good spells and bad spells. I think we put that into action today. We managed to get the bail out short when we needed it and we ground out the win. It might be a similarly close match in the womens, against china. They need this one, and in the final end, ten of ten, Great Britain leading china 7 6 but china do have the final stone of this final end. If they get on, they will go into extra ends and you can watch that on bbc one, it will be a close one. After a series of postponements the Alpine Skiing is back on in pyeongchang. In the blue riband event norwegian Axel Lund Svindal became the oldest Alpine Skiing champion when he won the mens downhill. Its the 35 year olds second olympic gold but first in downhill after he finished fourth as the favourite four years ago in sochi. Mikaela shiffrin is expected to be one of the Success Stories from pyeongchang. The american skiier won her first gold medal of tge games in the giant slalom. Shes bidding for three more titles on the slopes. Nine gold medals in total on day six in pyeongchang. So heres our round up of all of them. The thrills and multiple spills of snowboard cross eventually brought a gold medalfor frenchman and defending champion pierre vaultier, who came through the carnage to win the mens title. Swedens hanna oeberg had a perfect shooting performance to thank for her gold in the womens individual biathlon. Thats 20 out of 20. This was one of the events postponed yesterday because of the bad weather. After two golds so far in pyeongchang, germanys lara dahlmeier picked up a bronze. In the mens individual event over 20 kilometres, it was the skiing performance ofjohannes thingnes boe that brought the norweigan a gold medal. He makes amends for a disappointing games so far in his other events. A dominant performance from Ragnhild Haga saw her claim gold in the womens Cross Country skiing iokm freestyle. Something of a surprise. Germanys Aljona Savchenko and bruno massot won the pairs figure skating gold after recovering from a mistake in theirfirst programme yesterday. They had been fourth overnight after massot had completed a double instead of a triple salchow but they beat their own world record in todays free skate, ahead of the pairs from china and canada. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the bbc sport website. More now on the trial of the former football coach Barry Bennell and within the past half hour weve learnt hes been found guilty of the remaining child abuse charges against him. Lets go straight to the scene outside the court now. Throughout the 1980s, he used his position of trust as a football coach to sexually abuse innocent young boys who dreams of a professional career. He abused them time and time again. He abused them time and time again. He abused them at his home, in his car, at butlins holiday camp, and while on tour. Bennell groomed his victims in the calculating manner. In many cases he began with so called games involving play fighting and physical contact, but this quickly progressed to serious sexual abuse. Despite the compelling evidence bravely put forward by his victims, bennell continued to deny all of the serious charges against him. He claimed in effect that he was the victim of false allegations. Through careful presentation of the evidence, the prosecution demonstrated to the jury this story was nothing more than the latest lie told by Barry Bennell. I would like told by Barry Bennell. I would like to pay tribute to the victims who have come forward to give evidence against bennell. It is they who made this prosecution possible. For many of the victims, it was the first time in over three decades they have felt able to come forward to speak about what happened to them. I hope the outcome of this trial will give these men some sense ofjustice being done after so many years. The prosecution also serves as a reminder that the passage of time need not prove a barrier for sexual offenders to be brought before the courts. Thank you. Good afternoon, i am detective inspector sarah oliver andl am detective inspector sarah oliver and i have been the senior investigator in this case. Barry bennell, now known as richard jones, has been found guilty of child sexual abuse, offences that occurred over 30 years ago. As a football coach, he should have provided nothing more than safety and support for the players in his care. Instead he abused them. He also abused the trust of their families who placed them into that care so they could pursue their dreams of being professional footballers. He pursue their dreams of being professionalfootballers. He has shattered those dreams and left them burdened for decades. I would like to thank the victims who have come forward , to thank the victims who have come forward, and knowledge their bravery in doing so, and recognise their incredible dignity throughout these proceedings which i have no doubt have been extremely difficult for them. I hope these verdicts will help them each take a step closer to the closure they seek no injustice has been done. A team of dedicated and specialist officers have worked tirelessly on this inquiry and i would urge anybody who has been the victim of sexual abuse, no matter how long ago it took place, to come forward and report it to the police fire on 01. We will listen to you and support you and hopefully you too can achieve yourjustice. Reported to the police via 101. That was the senior investigating officer in that case, an update for you of course that Barry Bennell has been found guilty of 43 counts of child sexual abuse against 11 victims. Ben ando is at Liverpool Crown court. Just described the scenes in court as these verdicts were delivered. Just described the scenes in court as these verdicts were deliveredm had taken the jury 21 hours and 48 minutes to deliberate over these cases. We had 36 verdicts on tuesday afternoon but at that time the jury said they were still undecided on a further seven counts. This morning another three verdicts, all guilty, then finally four remaining counts, guilty verdicts again. Only three acquittals and they were on the legal directions of the judge, who as thejury legal directions of the judge, who as the jury gave their verdict, said to them he would not expect them to carry out jury service for another 15 years. He said they could have counselling if they needed it. He perhaps acknowledging the horrific nature of some of the evidence they have had to listen to over the four weeks of this trial. Then the jury giving their verdict this morning, and as you have heard, guilty counts 110w and as you have heard, guilty counts now involving a total of 11 victims that Barry Bennell abused over a period during the 1980s and 1990. And although there were 48 counts in this indictment, 43 convictions, thatis this indictment, 43 convictions, that is not the full extent of his offending because some of the witnesses described how he had assaulted them on hundreds of different occasions. What the lawyers do in these circumstances is bringing whats described as specimen charges, individual charges intended to reflect a far wider amount of offending and certainly some of the evidence the jury had to listen to during the course of this trial was absolutely horrific. Jurists were in tears as the verdicts were given. This has been ruling for them jurors. We are hoping to hear from two or three of them soon, they have waived their right to anonymity and will speak out in public about what happened to them. We also understand police are looking at allegations from a number of other individuals, as many as 98 other allegations involving Barry Bennell, who of course we must not forget has been convicted of paedophile offences on three previous occasions, twice in this country and once in the united states. Weve also had reaction from football clu bs, states. Weve also had reaction from football clubs, manchester city, Crewe Alexandra, and form look and here is my colleague david ornstein. We are not able to bring that piece at the moment, can we just follow on what you have just said about the football clubs Barry Bennell was involved in because this case, as well as affecting the victims so terribly, it has rocked the football world as well. Yes, it has, and in the aftermath of the initial allegations made against Barry Bennell there were a number of other people who came forward. Allegations now involving more than 300 clubs. There are other cases currently being investigated. For legal reasons we cant go into too much depth about those. Manchester city have released a statement in which they acknowledged the traumatic experience of the victims in this case. They have offered their sympathy. They are appointing aqc their sympathy. They are appointing a qc now to leader full their sympathy. They are appointing a qc now to leaderfull to their sympathy. They are appointing a qc now to leader full to lead their sympathy. They are appointing a qc now to leaderfull to lead a full independent investigation. They have two named individuals who carried out sex attacks on young boys, one of them Barry Bennell, another man named john broome who is 110w another man named john broome who is now dead. Crewe alexandra also released a statement expressing deep sympathy for the ordeal of the victims in this case, but saying as far as they are concerned, and they have gone back through their records, of course from those days a lot of records have been destroyed, saying there is no evidence they had any knowledge of what was happening at all. Although one former managing director, hamilton smith, has told the bbc he did try to raise this issue with both Crewe Alexandra and the fa but in his words at that time no one wanted to know. No one wanted to rock the boat. Many thanks. In a moment summary of the Business News this hour but first the headlines on bbc news. The former football coach Barry Bennell is found guilty of the remaining child abuse charges against him. It means hes been convicted of 43 counts from 11 victims. I declare the honourable Cyril Ramaphosa duly elected president of the republic of south africa. South africa has a new president in a ceremony in the countrys parliament Cyril Ramaphosa replaced jacob zuma, who resigned last night. 17 people have been killed after a gunman opens fire at a high at a high school in florida a nineteen year old former pupil is being held on 17 counts of premeditated murder. Members of the British SteelPension Scheme were targeted by vulture Financial Advisers after tata was allowed to off load its Retirement Fund thats according to a report from the work and pensions select committee. The uk government has yet to issue its response to the neglect claim. More on that in just a moment. European plane maker airbus has taken another £1. 2 billion hit on its troubled a400m military transport plane, bringing the total charges on the troubled defence project to over £7 billion so far. The news overshadowed otherwise upbeat full year results. Net profit increased 35 to almost £2. 56 billion. Supermarket chain lidl has hit a milestone of 700 stores in the uk, after it opened five new stores in one day. The new shops in edinburgh, stockton, hull, polegate and rosehill in south london have led to 200 newjobs. The budget supermarket chain, which has operated in the uk since 1994, says it plans to open more than 50 new stores this year. Shamelessly bamboozled thats how a parliamentary report has described members of the British Steel workers Pension Scheme, who were given unsuitable financial advice, leading some to lose out on thousands. It happened last year when tata restructured the scheme, meaning its 124,000 members had to decide what to do with that money. Earlier we spoke to tom mcphail, head of policy at hargreaves la nsdown. There were clearly some system failures here, the report highlighted various things which could have been done differently to protect the steelworkers. There was a particular set of circumstances towards the end of last year where they had to make a fairly complex decision in a short period of time. The trust and Pension Scheme had been undermined, they knew whichever of the two options they were presented with, the new replacement scheme or going into the lifeboat Protection Fund would have resulted in some loss of money for them. In that environment, unscrupulous advisers started knocking on their doors and offering a third option which involved transferring money out of Pension Schemes into an individual pension and in the process giving up the valuable guarantees they had built up in the original final salary scheme. Some scheme members chose to take that option, a couple of thousand of them. The transfer values were hundreds of thousands of pounds but the fees being taken were clearly not appropriate for the circumstances and so now some of these workers have found themselves seriously out of pocket as a consequence. Now, are you finding it hard to keep tabs on your childrens spending . Data out today from the office for National Statistics suggest that girls start spending more than boys as they enter their teens, as they discover the delights of expensive shampoo and make up. But in the lead up, at the ages of 7 9, boys are the big spenders. So should we be teaching them about how to manage their money better . Joining us now is steve korris, from mank, a Financial Education charity for young people. Pa rents always parents always worry about childrens spending when they get older but these days children are getting pocket money at a younger age. Why is it important to teach them the benefits of budgeting . The Research Suggests habits and behaviours we have around money will behaviours we have around money will be the key drivers for peoples Financial Literacy later in life. Historically only one in ten adults have any Financial Education at school. There are 16 million adults with less than £100 saved and really there isnt being enough done to help younger generations manage their money themselves so it is coming on the National Curriculum at secondary school age but not being done effectively. We are going to ta ke done effectively. We are going to take you straight back to Liverpool Crown court where some of the victims of Barry Bennell are speaking. I am proud of what i have achieved in terms of allowing these lads upstairs to get the justice they deserve for many years. It has been a really, really tough 15 months or so for me and my family. I recently lost my father so i know hes looking down on us now. Im proud of my wife for sticking by me, im proud of my children, and more importantly that justice has im proud of my children, and more importantly thatjustice has been served today. People will be able to move on with their lives, including myself, and hopefully fix themselves out because ive had many years of therapy and i just out because ive had many years of therapy and ijust hope they out because ive had many years of therapy and i just hope they are able to move forward and live some type of normal life like i want to do now. I want to also thank the judicial system and the jury for having to go through such a long process and deliver the right result because it must have been very difficult for them to listen to this. Ijust hope this goes down as a legacy, and i am proud, and i hope i will help so many other people in different walks of life to have the courage to speak out and to let go of this horrible feeling that we have all had to suffer for so many yea rs. Have all had to suffer for so many years. I do hope it goes global and people around the world have that courage to believe in the system and believe justice will be served. I just want to also thank every single one of you in the media, the way you have all treated me and dealt with me and been so respectful from have all treated me and dealt with me and been so respectfulfrom day one right until this day because it must have been very difficult for you as well. You are a credit to society really and ijust you as well. You are a credit to society really and i just want to thank you all. If there is any other victims, which i believe there is, it is up to each and every one of them whether they feel they are Strong Enough to come forward but i hope this has given some more courage thatjustice has been served today. I really would like every Single Person to get the justice they deserve. Is it worth speaking out in your view . Is it the right thing to do . It is a very difficult thing to do and it is life changing. It not only affects just yourself but it has a Ripple Effect on yourfamily. Yourself but it has a Ripple Effect on your family. Clearly today justice has been served and yes, i do believe it is the right thing to do. Inaudible. I knew he was prolific, i knew it was on an industrial scale. I didnt believe so many people would have the courage to come forward but im so proud of every single one of them that are still waiting now for justice still. I hope they will get theirjustice. Inaudible. I cant put it into words how difficult this last 15 months has been for me and my family. And my wife zelda who has had to stand with me through this. I have had a number of problems over the past 15 months but do you know something, i feel such gratitude and such. I am proud of what i have achieved in terms of these lads have got the justice and it was all worthwhile. Inaudible. I think now is the time. We have sat in silence for all of this time because of reporting restrictions but i do believe the football clubs that were accountable for this, that could have stopped this for so many yea rs, could have stopped this for so many years, and so many of us, some not even with us now, that could have been stopped and now is the time that it comes out. I would personally like, now after 15 months, an apology from Crewe Alexandra for what happened to us boys. Inaudible. The fa have been very quiet and i hope now they will speak out and do something that they have been promising to do for 15 months, and i have been working tirelessly trying to work with them, that they will do something now. Inaudible. In my opinion, no, but that isjust my opinion. Inaudible. I think he has been nothing but cruel, he has tortured these poor men. I have witnessed them crying day in, day out and there is no justice in terms of what he should serve. Justice is what it is but there is nothing, for what he has put those individuals through, and not only that, the jury members on society, i have no words. I cannot put it into words how i feel about what that man has done. Thank you. Thank you, everyone. So that was Andy Woodward there, the first of Barry Bennells victims to give a statement outside Court FollowingBarry Bennells conviction ona following Barry Bennells conviction on a large number of counts. Lets go to our correspondent. Who else are we expecting to hear from today . That was Andy Woodward as you know and in many ways it was he who started this latest case when he spoke out first. Here we have three more victims and they are chris unsworth, Mickey Fallon and steve walters. Lets hear what they have to say. My name is Mickey Fallon, i was abused by Barry Bennell as a child. Today he has been found guilty of those charges. We stand before you today as men united in justice, united under the before you today as men united in justice, united underthe banner of the Offside Trust, the organisation that set up survivors, by players for players. We stand before you as men united but at the same time we we re very young men united but at the same time we were very young boys. Little boys with a were very young boys. Little boys witha dream, were very young boys. Little boys with a dream, and our innocence was shattered. Our dream was turned into the most horrendous nightmare. For decades, that nightmare has haunted us. Decades, that nightmare has haunted us. For decades, we held our silence, just like our abuser told us silence, just like our abuser told us to. For decades we have lived in fear because we may be grown men standing in front of you now but we we re once standing in front of you now but we were once little children. That fear never leaves you. The fear not only of abuse but that you will not be believed if you speak out. But today, we faced that fear. We broke the silence, and we took back our voice. We looked our abuser the eye. We are no longer afraid of you, Barry Bennell. Today justice we are no longer afraid of you, Barry Bennell. Todayjustice was done and you know longer have any power over us. You done and you know longer have any power over us. You are nothing to us at all. We want to thank everybody who has helped us reach this point. To Andy Woodward for speaking out, Daniel Taylor of the guardian for writing that story, to our friends at the save association, your support is acknowledged and very much appreciated. To our loving families we are grateful for your strength and support. Our Offside Trust family, the men we now call brothers, and the women we now call sisters, who gathered around us and ke pt sisters, who gathered around us and kept us going when things were tough. To the police, dc oliver and herteam, and we tough. To the police, dc oliver and her team, and we have also been asked by a survivor who wishes to remain anonymous to thank in particular alan glover and his team at derbyshire police, and jean and claire at sv2, to the prosecution and the judge, and most importantly to the jury for hearing our evidence even when it must have been difficult to hear. For
