As the us and japan have attended the funeral in france of one of the prime exponents of their art, paul bocuse. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. President trump has told an audience of business and political leaders that his mantra of America First does not mean america alone. Speaking at the World Economic forum in davos in switzerland, mr trump said the us was doing fa ntastically well and was open for business. But he hit out at what he called other countries predatory trading practices. Earlier, the president said he was prepared to apologise for sharing social media posts by the far right Group Britain first. Our north america editorjon sopel reports from davos. Wherever donald trump has gone in davos, the crowds have gone with him. And wherever the cameras have been, the president has been pleased to oblige. I hope were going to bring back many billions of dollars into the us. I think that will happen. Its already happening. But billions of dollars is coming back into the us and i think that will just continue. How much today . How much . Probably a lot. And that was the theme of his speech. America first, yes, but an America Welcoming the world. I will always put America First, just like the leaders of other countries should put their Country First also. But America First does not mean america alone. When the United States grows, so does the world. But at the end of a week in which the us imposed extra charges on some imported goods from china, he played down talk of a trade war. Nevertheless, there was a warning. We cannot have free and open trade if some countries exploit the system at the expense of others. We support free trade, but it needs to be fair, and it needs to be reciprocal. Because in the end, unfair trade undermines us all. Some stood to applaud, but it wasnt the ovation given to president xi of china last year. This hasnt been a complete meeting of minds, but then again it was never going to be. That said, donald trump has been more conciliatory than many would have expected, and the audience have reacted more warmly. It may be that davos 2018 turns out to be a win win. And the president was in conciliatory, almost repentant mood over those britain first anti Muslim Retweets from last year that brought him to blows with the prime minister. Heres whats fair. If youre telling me those are horrible people, horrible, racist people, i would certainly apologise, if youd like me to do that. I know nothing about them. So, yes, he would apologise, he just didnt actually say sorry. The president has now left the swiss alps, and if not yet a fully paid up member of the davos set, he will probably be invited back. Theres a lot they liked about what donald trump said, and who would disagree with his central message, that a booming us economy is good for the Global Economy . Jon sopel, bbc news, davos. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 40 this evening in the papers. Our guests joining me tonight are jason beattie, head of politics at the daily mirror and helen brand, chief executive of the association of chartered certified accountants. The International Trade commission has voted unanimously in support of bombardier, blocking us trade commissions 292 tariffs on the company. A result against bombardier, the Canadian Airline company, could have putjobs at the companys plant in Northern Ireland under threat. We can speak to our ireland correspondent chris page, whos outside bombardier in belfast. Very an expected but very welcome news tonight for the workers here at bombardier in east belfast. So far this trade dispute had not been going the way they wanted, the us authorities had not made significant rulings, and the outcome of which was a tariff of i92 rulings, and the outcome of which was a tariff of 192 was expected to be imposed on imports of bombard eras flagship product, the passenger jet eras flagship product, the passengerjet eras flagship product, the passenger jet bombardiers flagship product. There have been worries aboutjob say, if the us trade body which met tonight in washington had endorsed that position and ruled in favour of boeing in this long running trade dispute. Boeing complained that Financial Assistance given to bombard the eight had amounted to giving them an unfair advantage given to bombardier had amounted. But the us authorities have overturned the proposed tariffs so now they wont have to face the punitive duties when it is imported to the United States. Joining me now is reaction from the union, you must bea is reaction from the union, you must be a happy man . Exceptionally happy at this decision. We pay tribute to the team we had at the workforce, oui the team we had at the workforce, our local representatives and officials, nationally and local, it isa officials, nationally and local, it is a tremendous result for Northern Ireland tonight, not just bombardier. Unanimous decision in washington, all four trade commission is voting in favour of bombardier, what have workers here said . They have said well done, but the thanks should go to the workforce , the thanks should go to the workforce, they have stayed squarely behind this and they have put their shoulder to the wheel. Politicians have given up the ghost when they said this is something that couldnt be overturned but we have demonstrated the power of trade unionism globally, working with our colleagues in canada and the United States and this is a victory for workers but we still have a job of workers but we still have a job of work to do and we still have redundancies. We have to try and save every single job. How much were people here braced for boeing to win this dispute . We have seen an aggressive American Administration since donald trump has come in. Hopefully this gives a sense to everybody, that collective responsibility can make a difference, that is what we have donein difference, that is what we have done in belfast tonight and that is what we intend to do across Northern Ireland, we have seen terrible job losses in the last 14 days and we need to fight every single one of them. Theresa may has spoken to President Trump about this in davos in the last 24 hours, and the mp for this area is 110 mps whose votes are effectively keeping the government in westminster in power is one of ten mps. What effect has the dup had . We have worked very hard with Gavin Robinson and we believe he has been sincere in his concern about the jobs. He has assurances from the British Government which we dont think they have carried through, and iiow think they have carried through, and now the dup needs to make decisions, do they continue to prop up a government which is harming people, do they continue to prop up a government which is overseeing a nhs in crisis because of their austerity measures. The dup has got to make that decision as a political party. Would boeing make an appeal . They may do, but i think it would be for hardy to do this. For hardy. We expect them to respect the decision and accept what has happened and lets move forward and lets look at building the economy and building the supply chain within Northern Ireland for the future of the people. Thanks forjoining us. David thompson from the unite union, with his reaction. Bombard era gully bombardier winning this dispute with boeing. Thanks forjoining us. With me now isjim fitzpatrick whos been reporting on this for bbc spotlight in Northern Ireland. He has been reporting on the bombardier story. Which way did you expect this to go . The government in the uk and the canadian government suggested they thought it would go against them but in Northern Ireland here, we interviewed a judge, who used to work for itc, and she gave her, saying it was an independent process. The commerce department, the first part of the process, it judged what wrong had been done and it determined there had been wrong done by money given by foreign governments, the canadians and the uk, they came up with a tariff, 300 , but if the itcjudged there was no harm that tariff would go away and that is effectively what they have done. We dont know why they have done. We dont know why they have done. We dont know why they have determined there was no harm to boeing, and we will find out in more detail, but maybe they have decided boeing did not compete in the same space and they were doing well otherwise, maybe, but essentially they have decided boeing wasnt hurt by this subsidy given to bombardier and the tariffs now go away. It impresses upon us the importance of the independent oversight when you are dealing with International Trade. Absolutely. Oversight when you are dealing with internationaltrade. Absolutely. We talk about donald trump, and we see him in davos today, reiterating the America First policy and talking about how they will crack down on foreign cheating, donald trump is the context for this battle in some ways, but there is still a very independent process within the United States in terms of trade, there are two parts to it. It moves to the process and is rigorously assessed and there are stilljudges who have their end you and they wont dojust who have their end you and they wont do just what donald trump wa nts wont do just what donald trump wants to do who have their own view. No doubt this wont be the last one we will see because donald trump is there and there is the crackdown on what he sees as unfair competition, and maybe other companies will try to challenge otherforeign companies will try to challenge other foreign competition to see if they can get results to go in their favour. Bombardier have welcomed the decision but boeing have said they are disappointed, but they also said they remain confident in the facts of the case. What more can boeing do . They can look at what the itc judges have said and then they can decide if they want to challenge that. Or they will look ahead to other sales that bombardier might now get, they have this big order from delta in the us, the us is the biggest market for this type of aircraft so it is very significant. If they get more sales maybe boeing will go after those and say they are still being sold. The phrase i heard, the boss of boeing said they we re heard, the boss of boeing said they were selling you planes at used aeroplane prices new planes. Certainly, this is a big victory for bombardier and it will be hard for boeing to challenge this, my guess is, when we see the reasoning from the itc, one of the questions they kept asking boeing, do you make a plain exactly like this . A plane. They might have determined they werent in this space or they determined the market was a broader Cross Section of planes and when they look at that boeings order book is very full and so it might be ha rd book is very full and so it might be hard for boeing to show that they have been harmed by competition and the itc had decided unanimously that they werent. Jim fitzpatrick, thanks forjoining us. The brexit secretary david davis has outlined the governments plan for the transition period after britain leaves the eu in march next year. He confirmed that during the time the uk would be free to sign new trade agreements. But mr davis played down rifts within his own party over europe, insisting there was no difference between himself, the chancellor and theresa may over brexit. 0ur Political Correspondent alex forsyth reports. In teesside today the brexit secretary was trying to calm troubled waters. Surrounded by businesses dependent on eu trade, he promised certainty and continuity when we leave. David davis set out the governments plans for a transition period of up to two years after brexit. This is a bridge to a new future partnership, where crucially the United Kingdom is outside the Single Market and outside of the customs union. He said for business there would be no dramatic change, but the uk would start to talk trade with other countries, all to be negotiated with the eu, but for now its comments by his cabinet colleague that is causing problems. The chancellor said there could be very modest changes in eu relations. If the cabinet cant agree on its position, how can you possibly negotiate with brussels . Look, im in politics, and people debate, and they have different views. Theres a diversity of views on this subject, in all parties. That doesnt mean that we dont have or cant have a coherent and forceful view, in the interests of the United Kingdom. Ministers dont always want their divisions laid bare. Today the chancellor insisted he backed the governments view. I was speaking about our trade relationship with the eu, and it is the governments policy that we want to maintain the maximum possible access to markets, and the minimum friction at our borders. Nonetheless, his comments angered some tory mps, although they insisted they are still behind theresa may. Downing street has made it clear that the chancellor did not represent government policy, and government policy remains as set out by the prime minister. But the businesses brexit will affect say the political discord is damaging. This car parts manufacturer in redcar relies on being able to import from and export to the eu, and its boss wants far more clarity from the government about its long term brexit plan. I think its been pretty shambolic, and ijust want them to get on with it. From the contrary statements coming out and infighting that is happening, i dont know what theyre expecting to achieve, i dont know what their targets are, because its just wishy washy. Businesses like those here which rely heavily on trade with the eu crave certainty. The government says thats what the transition phase will offer. The trouble is the conservative party simply cannot agree on what should come beyond. And as talks slowly approach future trade relations, what has so far been a fragile truce among the tories looks rocky. Alex forsyth, bbc news, teesside. Lets speak to joe 0wen, Senior Researcher at the independent think tank, the institute for government. Hes in our westminster studio. How much clearer argue about what the transition period will look like after david davis set up these ideas today . We heard a lot of what we already knew that uk government wanted, things to carry on as they were, they dont want there to be two sets of changes for business and the transition period will look a lot like things do now with the exception of the uk being outside of the Political Institutions in brussels. What we did here is where the uk is going to look to try and push in these negotiations and while the sides seem to be broadly aligned on what the transition period should look like there are key areas where they will need to be some negotiation over the coming weeks. What are those areas . The first is, what is the uks influence in the eu for the two year period, the increment asian phase, so you have heard Jacob Rees Mogg is concerned that the uk will become a facile state, a zombie member that has to accept the rules with no say the implementation phase. David davis says they will have a processor which the can have its voice heard, where disputes can be settled, so that will be big issue number one that will be big issue number one that will be big issue number one that will have Political Solutions but also very technical. The next issue will be around trade and whether the uk and liam fox will be able to fly around the world striking new trade deals in the implementation period and also the question of will the uk the helped by the eu in rolling over the existing trade deals. And then theres the issue of how long the transition period actually is, so the two sides have agreement it is roughly around two years, and the eu has been much more dogmatic on timings, they have said they want it signed sealed and delivered, transition ending at the end of 2020 but the uk have said, more pragmatic, the length should be determined by how long it takes to put the systems and processes in place to serve the future relationship and at the moment that points to around two years, so it will be interesting to see where the sides end up in any agreement that is struck in march if indeed that is when the agreement is struck. How likely is it that britain would have to start contributing more money to the eu part if the transition period extends into the new budget phase for the eu . Extends into the new budget phase forthe eu . Pot. Extends into the new budget phase for the eu . Pot. That would be a discussion for the extension period, the eu will go through their budget which begins in 2021, in you expect them to make assumptions and Contingency Planning around what happens if the transition extends, but the real detail the need to be negotiated as and when the extension is or isnt triggered. Jo owen, thanks forjoining us. Sport now and a full round up from the bbc sport centre. Good evening. It all proved too much, and trailing 5 2 in the second set, the pain was such that chung couldnt continue. Theres no way you can come back and you can make it worse so can come back and you can make it worse so thats why its better to stop, and that is why this feels bittersweet. Speaking to bbc newsnights kirsty wark, one of the women who launched the judicial review againstjohn worboys explained her worries that she and other victims would have no protection if he was released on licence. Are you fearful . Of course i am. Im very worried about this because i know for a fact he will reoffend. Somebody cannot live their life for so somebody cannot live their life for so many years committing these sort of crimes and getting away with it for such a long period and refuse to accept theyve done anything wrong and then all of a sudden turn over a new leaf and be a model sits on. The Food Standards Agency has defended the way it dealt with health and safety concerns at a meat company, which supplied the pub chain wetherspoons along with others, as well as cafes, schools and restaurants. The Food Standards Agency has stopped any meat leaving russell hume company sites, as it carries out an investigation over food hygiene concerns. Wetherspoon pubs, which sells 200,000 steaks a week, removed them from their weekly menu, after it too became concerned on hygiene grounds. And tonight, russell hume, the meat supplier issued a statement saying it was shocked by the action taken by the fsa and stressed it had an unblemished record going back 50 years. Well, more now from our Business Correspondent emma simpson, who gave us this update. On wednesday it emerged that the Food Standards Agency had been investigating russell hume for what it called serious noncompliance with food hygiene regulations. The company was forced to halt production at its six sites and all deliveries were suspended. It was also asked to make sure that its customers withdrew unused meat. It turns out those customers included a host of household names, from jamie 0livers italian restaurants, to butlins, to pub chains like marstons and greene king. Nothing, purely the fact that we couldnt pick up, so as the gates were locked we thought there was something going on, and the problem with russell hume, they have been a good supply, for many years, but they didnt speak to us, we tried for 36 hours to get information and we could not get any information from them and the fsa only dealt with it two days after we withdrew it from our pubs and we have an obligation to our customers that we werent doing anything wrong and it was easier to stop serving it rather than give a nswe rs stop serving it rather than give a nswers to stop serving it rather than give answers to questions we did have a nswe rs answers to questions we did have a nswers to. Several of the bbcs leading male news presenters have agreed to take a pay cut, after revelations about unequal pay at the corporation. Jeremy vine, nick robinsonjohn humphrys, huw edwards, jon sopel and Nicky Campbell have all agreed, either formally or in principle, to reduce their salary. It follows Carrie Gracies resignation as china editor, in protest at the unequal pay between male and female international editors. Heres our media correspondent david sillito. Arriving at work this morning wasjeremy vine, one of the bbcs highest paid presenters. However, hes now agreed that his pay, more than £700,000, should be cut. I think it all needs to be sorted out. And i support my female colleagues who have rightly said that they should be paid the same when theyre doing the same job. Its just a no brainer. It wasnt a problem for me to accept one. Its all part of the fallout from this, the moment the bbc was forced to reveal the pay of its highest paid presenters. Not only were there questions of the size of the deal, there was a big gap between male and female presenters. The bbc says it has agreed a series of pay cuts, among them are the today programmes john humphrys, jeremy vine, Nicky Campbell, huw edwards, along withjon sopel and nick robinson, alljust before a meeting next week with mps to discuss the issue. I dont think people making voluntary sacrifices or individual gestures is a way to solve what appears to be a very large problem. If a job is worth paying an amount of money for, its worth paying that amount of money for whoever does it, a man or woman. Four of the bbcs leading male news presenters say they will take a pay cut in the wake of Carrie Gracie resigning as china editor. And i am also on that list. This was 5 live this morning, and the slightly uncomfortable moment when the news presenters found themselves in the news bulletin. And it is not the end of it. A bbc review of star pay is due out in the next few days, along with a face to face meeting with mps. The today presenterjohn humphrys spoke about the pay controversy to our media and arts correspondent david sillito. How much are you earning now . I shant tell you that because thats for the bbc to reveal in due course when the next disclosure happens, but hugely less than i was. A lot less than 600,000, half . 0h, a lot less than 600,000. But then the 600,000 is mildly misleading because that included my mastermind fees as well, yeah. Its been reported that its been roughly halved to around 300,000. Im not going to comment. How much did you say . About 300,000. Somewhat less, but im not going to comment in any detail about that. Your salarys been cut in half, you seem quite happy about it. Its not exactly a pathetically low salary. Most people listening to this would probably say, hes probably not worth even that. Its still a lot of money. A lot less than it was, which just goes to show what i was and was a very large a lot of money. And it seems, as i say, entirely fair to take rather less. Have you been reassured that youll be earning the same as your female colleagues . I havent asked the question. Would you want to know . No. Joining me now is samantha mangwana, an employment solicitor at the legal film slater and gordon. Samantha, thank you for coming in. How will six highly paid male employees of the bbc, which has 19,000 staff members, resolve the equal pay pop is that women that work for the bbc claim exist . The reality is, they cant buy themselves. Its obviously commendable to want to stand up and be part of the solution, rather than pa rt be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem, but these problems are only really going to be resolved by the organisation itself. What does the bbc need to do . The legal right is to be paid equally for equal work. That means work that is the same work, or work that is of equal value, or if you work somewhere that there is a job evaluation scheme, work rate is equivalent. But what happens then in this slightly nebulous area where an employer says, no, he this slightly nebulous area where an employersays, no, he is this slightly nebulous area where an employer says, no, he is not your comparator, and a woman is convinced a man is. It comes up time and again, and clearly, it is important to put forward reasons why you consider, not you personally, but for the individual bringing an equal pay claim or raising her concern about equal pay to set out the reasons she considers the job is similar, or broadly similar, and to address any of the factors, which the employer suggests make a difference. For example, saying the job in washington is a big job might not really be a reason for paying that person an enormous sum of money over a person who does an equally big job in china. Its immensely subjective, then. And very frightening for women, is it, to tackle Something Like this . Frightening for women, is it, to tackle Something Like thi57m frightening for women, is it, to tackle Something Like this . It can be daunting to take on your employer or to progress a claim. Thats true. But the fact that it is subject to actually isnt necessarily a bar. If you think about it, in most workplaces, people arent doing exactly the same job, and there are differences. The legislation is designed, actually, to encompass all of that. So if you can show that your work is similar, or of equal value, it ought to come in to the same ambit. If you get to the point where you agree that you have been underpaid, what are the remedies . If you were to progress that as a claim before the implement tribunal, the employment tribunal is entitled to award arrears of pay so the difference that you should have been paid forup to difference that you should have been paid for up to six years. Thats quite a significant sum. How, then, is an organisation like the bbc meant to afford that if it is a widescale problem at a time when its budget is being cut . The reality is, there will always be a question over budgets and finding the money to do this, but the Public Sector has gone through this before. If people havent been paid money that they are due, they are owed that payment. If they had to fight a claim to get it, then it is a judgment debt. The organisation is responsible for paying it, it is their problem to sort out. Finally and briefly, if you can, why are we still dealing with this when there was an equal pay act in 1970 . It is astonishing, there is no answer. But now, the amount of attention this story is getting and with Pay Reporting requirements coming in april, transparency around page means that more people are aware of their pay gap and are able to progress their rights. Samantha, thank you very much.
