This man larry nassar molested Young American gymnasts. More than 160 of his victims and their relatives spokes at this sentencing hearing today he was for at least 175 years. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was scathing. Ive just ivejust signed ive just signed your death warrant. I need everyone to be quiet. Myself co nte m pt i need everyone to be quiet. Myself contempt powers, i told you, im not nice. Ifind that contempt powers, i told you, im not nice. I find that you contempt powers, i told you, im not nice. Ifind that you dont contempt powers, i told you, im not nice. I find that you dont get it, that you are a danger. Before the judge passed sentence she read part of a letter she had received from nassar defending his actions. I was iwasa i was a good doctor, because my treatments worked, and those patients that are now speaking out for the same ones that praised and came back, over and over, and referred family and friends to see me. The media convince them that everything i did was wrong and bad. They feel i broke their trust. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. That was a letter written by larry nassar. He was more contrite in court. Box 3 your words these past several days come your words, your words, your words, have had a significant emotional effect on myself and have shook me to my core. I also recognise that what i am feeling pales in comparison to the pain, trauma and emotional destruction that all of you are feeling. There are no words that can describe the depth and breadth of how sorry i am for what has occurred. Throughout this trial, the victims have been central to proceedings. Today we heard from three more. They dont see the frustration, the exhaustion, the sadness, the emotional and physical trauma that hau nts emotional and physical trauma that haunts my everyday and my every move. They dont see the days that my husband finds me crying on the floor of our bedroom. They dont see me hiding in the bathroom at work, begging myself to political orjust to make it through the rest of the day. We were ultimately Strong Enough to take you down. Not one by one but by an army of survivors. We are jane does no more. One but by an army of survivors. We are jane does no more. What was done to myself and this other women and little girls, and the fact that our sexual violation was enjoyed by larry, matters. It demandsjustice, and the sentence imposed today will send a message about how much these pressures women and children are worth. You have seen our pictures, your honour. Moments in time captured when they were young and vulnerable and violated. The woman the last woman we heard there was rachael denhollander. She was the first to publicly accuse nasser and the final victim to speak. This was the reaction in court. You are the bravest person i have ever had a court. Thank you. Applause as these testimonies have gone and feels like this will have ramifications not just the feels like this will have ramifications notjust the us port but the us society as well. Nada tawfik has been following the story. Absolutely, the sheer number of women and the strength of their testimony, and the horrific accounts that they brought to this courtroom. Imean, the that they brought to this courtroom. I mean, the judge that they brought to this courtroom. I mean, thejudge remarked at how brave they were to take this emotional toll, basically with the worlds attention on them, because this has been such a high profile case. Originally 88 women were supposed to speak, but in the end 156 victims decided to face larry nassar, saying that they gained strength from the other women that went before him. An independent third party will look into how this could have gone on for so long. That was one of the things that the women co nsta ntly was one of the things that the women constantly touched upon in their testimonies. Notjust the anger, and who knew what and when. Four olympic gold medalists have gone public about being assaulted by larry nassar. Simone biles, aly raceman, Gabby Douglas and mckayla maroney. Simone has tweeted just now in the last few minutes. She goes on to say. May you never heard or abuse another person again. I am broken, may you never heard or abuse another person again. Iam broken, i may you never heard or abuse another person again. I am broken, i am tired. I feel like the life has literally been sucked out of me. You manipulated us to trust you because you are a doctor and doctors do no wrong. After this is said and done, you will be forgotten but none will forget how i was gotten the strength to stand up and take you down. Perhaps have figured it out by now, but little girls dont stay little forever. They grow into strong women that return to destroy the world. The focus is now turning to how this could have happened. Many victims have criticised usa gymnastics for ignoring their complaints. Theyve accused the federation of suppressing their accounts to limited bad publicity. An investigation has been launched into Michigan State university, where dr nassar practised for decades. And questions have been levelled at us olympic officials, and what they knew. Back to nada tawfik, whos overseeing these investigations. The state attorney general has said that they will look into what happened at Michigan State university where larry nassar was employed. When it comes to the us olympic committee, again they have said they will be having an independent third party looking into this. But the question becomes whose head should roll over this . On monday, three Board Members from usa gymnastics resigned. But you have rally racing, an olympic gold medallist, saying she believed it is rotten to the core and that their dates to be a complete restructuring of the sports governing body. So it is unclear what will happen on that front. But again i think you heard the girls speak to on numerous occasions, that there doesnt need to just be this case closed at the end of the sentencing. There does need to be properfollow up, and the judge herself said there needs to be a massive investigation, which the state attorney general says they are going to start looking into. Its been an extraordinary day in brazilian politics. This man ex president Luiz Inacio Lula da silva has lost an appeal to overturn his corruption conviction. Not only that, three judges extended his sentence from nine years to 12 years jail. The hearing has gripped brazil. It took place in the Southern City of porto alegre. There have been protests in the streets for the last few days from his supporters as well as his detractors. The 72 year old was going to try for re election later this year. That dream is all but over. Before thejudgment, he said he would continue to fight for the brazilian people. Here he is. Only one thing will stop me from what i am doing, that will be the day i am no longer here, the day i die. Lula was linked to a massive corruption probe, known as operation car wash. He was convicted of receiving bribes, including a newly refurbished apartment. Camilla costa has been covering proceedings. Shejoins me from sao paolo. Camilla, is he going to go to prison . Well, not exactly, not right now. Thejudges prison . Well, not exactly, not right now. The judges have prison . Well, not exactly, not right now. Thejudges have unanimously upheld his conviction, but they have also said he can still appeal in liberty and that is probably what former president lula and his lawyers will probably do. They will go before the Electoral Court and the supreme federal court, so what is more likely is that the Supreme Court resolves the water. Resolve the matter. As until then, lula stays free. So despite this coming could still become the next present . Theoretically, yes. Obviously the decision today narrows the path that former president lula could have pursued to get the accusations overturned, and also to get elected, and this also adds more uncertainty to this electoral process. But obviously keep saying his the right person to get this country back contract. What we dont know is if the support will do the same after this conviction. You have described in the past doubts that the judiciary can stand up to the most powerful people in brazil. This is one example of that happening. Exactly, the country is quite divided. Obviously lulas supporters say this is actually a political conviction, and it shows the judiciary as part of an elite, they say, that once the ticket out of power. This is proof that no one is above the law. In a few minutes, we would talk about the new manager of the england womens Football Team. It is phil neville. He didnt quite have the experience to match the job specification. He has also tweeted a joke about Domestic Violence a few yea rs joke about Domestic Violence a few years ago. It has been a controversial day one to him in the job. A witness told the jury would never forget the drivers constant smiling. Darren osborne denies murder and attempted murder. The former doctor for the Us Gymnastics Team is jailed for one hundred and seventy five years for sexually assaulting young female athletes. Any of you who read that article in the Financial Times will be surprised. Its all over for the president s club. Its not going to hold any more events like the one here its been a big story today several hundred rich, powerful men invited to a Charity Auction where they were entertained by hostesses two of them, were reporters, undercover for the Financial Times. It is now the most read article ever to appear on the effort he put the website. The event was held here at the dorchester hotel, one of londons top venues. The Event Programme gives you an idea of the tone of the event lunch with the foreign secretary one of the lots on offer. Another was Plastic Surgery to spice up your wife. As the drink flowed, the behaviour in the room took an unpleasant turn. Heres what happened. Multiple women told me they had been touched inappropriately, and that ranged from holding their hands to touching their stomachs to hans near the bottom of their back, things that maybe you might not find the offensive, but then touching their bombs, touching, kind of grabbing them, pulling them into their laps, yes, there was a complete range of Sexual Harassment, basically. There has been an enormous reaction. This was the house of commons earlier as mps from across the political spectrum reacted. At this event, allegations of inappropriate and lewd behaviour. It is quite a Jordan Veretout me mr speaker that in the zist veretout me mr speaker that in the 215t entry allegations of this kind are stillemerging. 215t entry allegations of this kind are still emerging. What happened was that women were bought as bait for men, richman, not a mile from where we stand, as if that is u na cce pta ble where we stand, as if that is Unacceptable Behaviour. It is totally u na cce pta ble. Theres been plenty of fallout today one of the men who organised it has resigned from a role in government, the businessmen david meller was a nonexecutive board member of the department for education. Also attending was a government minister at that same department nadim zahawi. He said he left the event early. The compere for the evening was the comedian David Walliams the evening did raise £2 million for Childrens Charities but people who work in fundraising now consider that money to be tainted heres why. Laurie, do you think it is appropriate this money is turned down . Absolute no, i think they should keep the money. I understand why they want to send it back because obviously it is money that comes from this tainted place, but honestly, the guys at this event, this appalling horrible event, which seems to be normal, honestly one of the things that is shocking is the sudden outrage that this event that has been hosted many times before, these people over money. They over money in taxes. Philip green was one of the people attending, sir philip green, former owner of bhs. He owes personally at the minimum £150 million tax that he has avoided, and he owes that money to the government. That money should be put towards the nhs. The reason these childrens hospitals are having to solicit Charity Donations at all is that we are not properly funding them. That is one of the things shocking me. Ithink them. That is one of the things shocking me. I think the hospital should keep the money as a down payment on the money that these people over. There is a broader issue about whether the wealthiest in the country pay enough tax, but what about the specific nature of this event. If there had been no groping and everyone had behaved themselves, could you accept a men only event in any form . Look, i think one of the difficulties here kamui heard what the government minister said, i will never go to a men only event, as of the reason this event was so horrific for the women who were working there was the fa ct women who were working there was the fact that it was meant only. This discussion has been taking place along the lines of, oh well you know what men are like when they have had a few drink, you know what they are like, they cant give the hands of young girls. No, ithink like, they cant give the hands of young girls. No, i think that is offensive to men, and i think that you as a man are offended by that. By you as a man are offended by that. By the suction that if you had had a few drinks you would behave in this vile, sexist way and put pressure, to offer you the services they probably dont want to offer. I think that is really offensive to men, not to mention putting the onus on young women to take responsible at it for that behaviour when they should be just getting at it for that behaviour when they should bejust getting on at it for that behaviour when they should be just getting on with the job of work. Some people have pointed the fact that the ft doing this investigation is evidence that there are major cultural shift happening, the ft being the traditional paperfor happening, the ft being the traditional paper for those who work in high level corporate jobs. Do traditional paper for those who work in high level corporatejobs. Do you agree that that is evidence of something shifting . Absolutely, i think there is a huge change taking place across the world right now, starting with the me too movement, which began many months ago now. Women in all walks of life are coming together to say that Sexual Harassment is not ok and we deserved to be treated as equal human beings in every line of work we go into. But what is interesting is that the focus is moving on to different kinds of inequality. Some of the first people to come forward were very rich, hollywood celebrities, but it turned out that women in jobs where they dont necessarily have a long career path, like waitress ting, hostess injobs, also have to put up with this kind of discussing behaviour of men and it has to stop disgusting. With everything like this, with ceremony forms of prejudice, when it comes out and civil to say this is not ok, you get people in Parliament Saying we are terribly shocked, we had no idea this was happening. When actually things like this are normal and fine, right up until the day when they are not normal and they are not fine, and people realise that they have never been fine. I think that is what is happening now, and it is painful and difficult, and you will hear a lot of people saying all considerable things, and asking that these young women, saying that these young women probably asked for it. But this is just kicking and screaming against a change in culture coming in from a change for the better the stop thank you for talking to us, the vast majority of the reaction i have seen from public figures has been these women were definitely not asking for it. We mentioned sir philip green in the interview, it was definitely on the seating plan but it has not been confirmed whether he was at the event. Hello, thank you forjoining me for our round up of the world weather. We starred in a very chilly asia, where japan, china and the korean peninsular are all experiencing the hard blast of winter. This is a recent scene from tokyo, meanwhile in china, people taking extreme measures to wrap up from the cold. In some spots to the north of the country, temperatures as low as 540 have been recorded. And things arent going to change in any great hurry in the coming days, very cold air extending quite a good way south into china. Right the way across korea and japan. Warm air to the south, to swear these two come together that we get a weather front establishing, and that in itself is going to cause us further issues in the next few days. It is hitting just the long length of the yangtze valley, this weather system could bring 50 centimetres, a couple of feet of snow before the end of this week, snow reaching as far east as shanghai. More showers coming down across the sea of japan, affecting particularly the north half the country. Lets head to america. Some action towards the north west. Another low pushing some further rain into the Pacific Northwest. The balance is definitely going to be redressed by the weekend. The area of High PressureHolding Things steady in the east will start to wea ken steady in the east will start to weaken through thursday into friday. Initially it will bring some very mild air through eastern states, then the slow starts to chase across from the north west, cold air testing and behind it were those two air masses need, a deep area of low pressure developing, some pretty violent storms heading through the these coast of usa today. Further lows coming into the Pacific Northwest so little respite there. Off to europe, and here is paris, like many parts of france actually, just a lot of water around and significant issues with flooding, pa rt significant issues with flooding, part of it due to snow melt, part of it due to the fact we have seen so much rain, and another weatherfrom sinking at the, but also to give early friday, a discrete area of low pressure from some pretty nasty weather on the way across alpine regions. A top up of heavy rain across south eastern france as well. The snow across the alps could be problematic, some quite strong winds around the low, that can mean poor visibility, mild air getting pulled up visibility, mild air getting pulled up meaning the high avalanche risk, soi up meaning the high avalanche risk, so i think skiers in this region most definitely beware. Elsewhere across europe, some pretty reasonable weather shall we say that this point in the year. Still some cold air in the east, some mild and by the conditions of west. As for the uk, a good deal windier than it has today, that wont be difficult, there should be some sunshine as well. Why colleagues will have a better outlook for you as we head towards the top of the hour. Hello, im ros atkins, this is outside source, and these are the main stories here in the bbc newsroom. Following seven days of emotional testimony from his victims, a judge has jailed the disgraced us olympics doctor larry nassar. Sir, iam sir, i am giving you 175 years. There was joy and relief in court. Well hear from the british men in syria who are fighting for the Kurdish Militia that turkey is attacking. And yesterdays School Shooting in kentucky brings the number of shootings at schools in the us to 11 this year. We will bring you more on that as well. Save the children was targeted in afghanistan today. Three staff and a soldier died 5 the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility. It happened in jalalabad, in the east of afghanistan. Nangarhar province is a strong hold of is. The taliban also operate there. Save the children has recently tweeted an updated statement. We have temporarily suspended our operations across the country following todays events, however we remain fully committed to helping the most deprived children of afghanistan. Heres Secunder Kermani with more. This happened when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a gate of save the childrens offices in the city. He was in a car. Then another gunman began shooting. I was speaking to one survivor who told me that he and 45 other members of staff managed to lock themselves in a secure room where they hid from the attacker, although one of the gunman was just the other side of the door. He said they later managed to escape, although this comes just a few days after another larger attack in kabul at the Intercontinental Hotel in which 19 people were killed, 14 of whom were foreigners. Save the children isnt the only charity to come under attack in afghanistan. The International Committee of red cross, has also been targeted in the past. One of their staff spoke to the bbc earlier. We stand in solidarity with them and express our outrage and how much we are sorry that this happened. Also we would like to extend our condolences to the families of the collea g u es condolences to the families of the colleagues who unfortunately have lost their lives today. If you are not able to move around and we are not allowed by security restrictions to do ourjob, definitely the impact will be felt by the population, by the civilians we are trying to help. No to the us. 55 now to the us. I want to show you this article. Its a story in the New York Times. Its headline School Shooting in kentucky is nations11th of year. Its january 23. The shooting they refer too is this one at a high school in small town kentucky yesterday. Two fifteen year old students were killed and more than 18 people were injured. Like the article suggests, School Shootings have become a common occurrence in the us. And they are happening across the country. A School Cafeteria outside dallas. A Charter School parking lot in new orleans. A school bus in iowa. A College Campus in southern california. A high school in seattle. Researchers say that since 2013 there has been about one School Shooting a week, and were losing our capacity for shock. Katherine schweit is a former fbi official. She has been following this issue closely. And has co authored a study of 160 active shooting incidents in the United States. Shejoins me from phoenix. Thank you forjoining us. Our schools disproportionately targeted . I dont think so. They make the news more. In fact in the United States, these types of shootings occur most often in businesses, almost twice as often in businesses, almost twice as often in businesses, almost twice as often in a Business Environment than ina often in a Business Environment than in a School Environment. Ijust think that School Environment really shocked our conscience. Some sources claim americans have become normalised to this, does this in any really do is the chances of them happening because some people are of course motivated by the attention they will get. I think time will tell whether or not we know that thatis tell whether or not we know that that is true. There is certainly an element of the people who commit these kinds of facts, they want to become famous, certainly they want to have that notoriety, and as it drops away, hopefully that is what we will see. But think it will take a number of years to see statistically whether that is accurate. You have studied 160 of these incidents, what conclusions have you drawn, are the Common Elements to all of them. Have you drawn, are the Common Elements to all of themlj have you drawn, are the Common Elements to all of them. I think one of the things that surprised me, even when i was doing the research, is that this is a very balanced situation. Very often a Law Enforcement officer is killed or injured, more often than in any other type of incident in the United States so its a very dangerous situation even for the Law Enforcement officers would respond. The other thing probably more powerful for the public to the other thing probably more powerfulfor the public to recognise is that of the 160 incidents were studied during that time period, 21 of them or where the shooting was stopped by an unarmed civilian who selflessly stepped in and interfered with the shooter, whether through words or actions, or with a group of people. So the power to stop this, if it happens, is most importantly in the hands of the people who were with the shooter at the time. That is interesting. And every time we report on one of these shootings, the debate about gun control plays out, are there other measures aside from gun control that you think would reduce the frequency or the impact of these attacks . Definitely. I think ideally we all want to prevent these kinds of incidents from happening in any way. I should tell you, american schools, statistically the data collection, american schools safer today than ever before in the United States in terms of all the types of crime and violence that might happen in them. So the schools are safer today that these particular types of incidents have been increasing in the United States, and some of it points to the fa ct states, and some of it points to the fact that we really need to individually have a handle on everybody around us and be aware of what is going on. Because we know that in 80 or 90 of the instances, there were peers, family members, teachers, people who heard things and new things ahead of time and did not stub out and Say Something because they didnt take the person seriously they did not want to get someone seriously they did not want to get someone in trouble 55 did not stab at. That just wont someone in trouble 55 did not stab at. Thatjust wont help. Youve got to step but if you are concerned, youve got to see something, youve got to Say Something. Can i ask you about the media, i am particularly interested in this. The role of the media in these stories is often criticised, they turn these events into a movie, the drama of it all, do you think the International Media get it wrong when these events happen. If you had asked me that question when the columbine shooting at the high school occurred in 1990 andi at the high school occurred in 1990 and i said yes. I wouldve said in retrospect its easy to see that the media, back then, and even even during that time of one of our most horrific shootings at Virginia Tech university, at a theatre where dozens university, at a theatre where d oze ns we re university, at a theatre where dozens were killed and injured, the shooter was often the focus of the media stories. I would say in the usa, even look at this conversation were having now, we are not talking about the shooting in kentucky, we are talking about other things. But as with the media is getting it right in terms of being a responsible and social part of the community to our focus has to be not on glorifying the shooter, it has to be on how can we prevent how can we help some and recover when they are involved in it. One last question, which led americans becoming desensitised, when you look at that 2018 list are you shocked or do you see another couple of normal weeks in america . That is a good question. Im kind of sad. This is all ive worked on for the last four years, i was in the fbi, and i always thought we would have less, and we still seem to have more, and that makes me sad. We appreciate you joining us. Thank you very much forjoining us live from phoenix. And the article that i showed you at the beginning of the story, you can see it on the New York Times website. Dont forget you can get much more detail on our top stories on our website. Bbc. Com news. Next on outside source. Lets spend time looking at how phil neville has become the new manager of the england womens Football Team 5 despite not meeting the job spec. And how hes kept the job after the emergence of a tweet with a joke about Domestic Violence. This is the fa website, where youll find the job description. The fa were looking for someone with a track record of successful management. We know phil neville has managed. But only for one game. With salford city fc. They won that game 251. Neville co owns this, much smaller club alongside some of his former Manchester United teammates. Next, to the tweets from 2012. First we have some casual sexism. When i said morning, men, i thought the women would be too busy preparing brea kfast getting the kids ready making the beds women always want equality until it comes to paying the bills 5 hypocrites. And then this. Relax, im back, chilled. Just battered the wife. Feel better now. Two things to note here. If this was a tweet with a joke about racist or homophobic violence, hed almost certainly be out of a job. Two, its estimated 1. 2 million women in the uk experience Domestic Abuse every year 5 so this issue directly affects many, many families in the uk. Next this is the uk governments sports minister tracy crouch says it is right that phil neville has apologised, sexism of any kind must not be tolerated. Next, the Campaign Group kick it out asks if the fa will be charging phil neville for discriminatory remarks. The answer to that is no. Instead they say he will be reminded about his future conduct. Its worth adding phil neville has worked for bbc sport as an analyst and pundit since these tweets were sent. Well, nevilles apologised. He says that following comments made several years ago, i wish to clarify that they are not a general reflection of my character and beliefs. And hes got plenty of support from journalists saying hes a good bloke. Oliver holt who says i dont know many men in the football world who show more respect towards women than him. michaelvaughan questioning phil neville the manager i understand. Thats fair even though i think he will do a fantasticjob. But questioning the person i i find totally unfair. I havent met a more ha rd working humble guy across my 28 years in pro sport. But whats being questioned isnt what kind of a guy phil neville is 5 its whether its appropriate for a man who sent tweets of this nature to manage the National Womens team. And remember we have to see all of this in the context that the last manager of the womens team, mark sampson, he was dismissed after evidence of inappropriate and Unacceptable Behaviour with female players in a previous role. Bbc sports Natalie Pirks gives us her take from wembley. The twitter storms seems to be obscuring the issue of whether phil neville is qualified for the job, having never managed before and never worked in the womens game. The fa has confirmed that two of the last four candidates to the job were female and all four withdrew from the process. The editor of womens soccer zone and spoke to me, i asked what the fa should do next. They have some difficult questions to answer. They havent had a press co nfe re nce answer. They havent had a press conference yet with phil neville. As we have seen from the reaction early doors the media across the country have some questions to ask him in relation to things exposed over the la st 24 relation to things exposed over the last 24 hours, they have meant that hes entered the job under a cloud much as mark sampson left and one. This isnt how he would have wanted to start his tenure. It beggars belief that when your points you dont go to the social media and check what they are saying. The fa outlined from the start that Due Diligence would be a big factor in the recruitment of the new coach, after what we saw the mark sampson they indicated that they wanted to ta ke they indicated that they wanted to take theirtime and they indicated that they wanted to take their time and do checks, but these tweets have come back to haunt him and as a result hes got a lot of people to win over because from what i know and what i followed the womens Football Community are not happy with what they have seen. Many male sports journalists have come out and male sports journalists have come outand said, male sports journalists have come out and said, i know phil neville, he isa out and said, i know phil neville, he is a nice guy, and i am not one moment saying that he is not. This is more about girls and women who support this team, maybe want to play for this team, why a man who said this is this job. , exactly, one of the key things is notjust about the team being successful, it is about grassroots football, getting young women into the game and when you have somebody heading up and when you have somebody heading up the team who has said these things although he has apologised and said they do not reflect who he is, it is difficult because now they need to figure out how they will play this. Some claim it is difficult because they should have found a woman to do this job. But it is not unusual for womens found a woman to do this job. But it is not unusualfor Womens National teams to be managed by men. Is not unusualfor Womens National teams to be managed by menlj is not unusualfor Womens National teams to be managed by men. I would have liked it to be a woman, some candidates made the short list but fell short, but there are examples of men who have taken on coaching roles and men who havent had experience in the womens game, Nielsen Nielsen was the danish coach and took that into the 2017 final, worked out, there was also the french put a couple of years ago, although he only lasted one year, it didnt go according to plan for him. Im sure youve been in contact with many people in the womens football scene in the uk today. Do they want phil neville to apologise, as he has, or wanting to go. |j phil neville to apologise, as he has, or wanting to go. I dont think anyone has said they want to go, they need to see how he works, i think we will see quite early how good he is as a coach. Hes got to wina good he is as a coach. Hes got to win a lot of people over and he has to do it quickly. There will be a raft of comment pieces arriving in the sports pages in the next few days. This is a combo kit story we have been following. Weve been reporting on turkeys operation against Kurdish Forces here in afrin, in northern syria. The situation is particularly complicated for the west because both sides are its allies. It gets more complicated still 5 because the bbc has established that british men are among a group of International Volunteers who are fighting with the Kurdish Forces, known as the ypg. This is a video they uploaded on youtube. We have been training for a significant amount of time, tactics that work against any force. Well this story has come from the bbcs emma vardy 5 ive been talking to her. We know dozens of british men and one women have gone out to vote for the Kurdish Forces against is. This isa group the Kurdish Forces against is. This is a group of International Volunteers, one from the us, others going to afrin to fight against turkey so a twist in what is a complicated situation. Mercenaries or ideological leap motivated . They say they are not mercenaries, they volunteers, they dont get paid. Motivated for different reasons, initially the desire to fight against what they saw as the evil of is, is motivated by the kurdish ideology of setting up an autonomous region. In terms of setting up against turkey its a different mission. Legally they could face different consequences in the uk. Fighting against what is technically a nato ally of the uk. To the express concern that they are involved in a mismatch between the Turkish Military and a relatively small Kurdish Militia . Turkish military and a relatively small Kurdish Militia . |j Turkish Military and a relatively small Kurdish Militia . I asked them just that, you could be facing the prospect of death. Weve seen seven deaths among british men fighting against eye as mac. Now they will face shelling from the turkish army, turkish tanks coming over the border, the prospect of death is something we have considered, but they feel a sense of comradeship, when they come back to the uk,. Delicate for the british with these sides turning on each other. Diplomatically and legally difficult. Those who have gone against is, when they return many have been arrested yet no one has been charged. If they are fighting against turkey and the Turkish Military, the british authorities may see that differently. They could be arrested, they could face prosecution. They could be helping Kurdish People in one form or another indefinitely. Kurdish people in one form or another indefinitelylj Kurdish People in one form or another indefinitely. I think when they went to fight against Islamic State those i spoke to do not expect that one day there might have defied against the turkish army. Dot mac that one day they might fighting the turkish army. What could happen is that the conflict might escalate and they could become sucked in. There are other british volunteers who continue to fight against the re m na nts of who continue to fight against the remnants of is who have not decided to fight against the turkish army, they feel a sense of comradeship with the Kurdish People and they seem to be the ones who have decided to go. I want to tell you about some new research on cheetahs. And the animals that they chase. We already knew they were the fastest land animal on earth. They reach speeds of up to 120kph. So you think theyd be great at catching their prey. In fact only 50 of cheetah hunts end in kill. This is because the animals that they are chasing, like impala, i incredibly good at getting away. Scientists have been looking at both parties. Victoria gill, science correspondent. Scientists have been fascinated by the cheater, the ultimate athlete of the cheater, the ultimate athlete of the animal world. They like to look at how they achieve this incredible acceleration. But this study looked at hunting. The colours the cheetahs paul waring were designed by veterinary scientists, and they track the position of the cheetah 200 times every single second. So they can capture every movement in that chase. The same time were inmgls make, success inmgls make, ic5 success and hes make, ic5 i success and failure. What ic5 i success and failure. What did i success and failure. What did we i 5t 5555555 555 f5i55r55ii5ti555i5 w5 f we 5t 5555555 555 f5it5r55ii55555i5 w5 f we cant 5t 5555555 555 f5ii5r55w5555i5 w5 f we cant simply learn by learn that we cant simply learn by watching the video . You can see the clues from what they mathematically figured using the colours in the video, the High Speed Pursuit is not all about speed, the cheetah is the fastest la nd all about speed, the cheetah is the fastest land animal but i dont a lwa ys fastest land animal but i dont always catch their prey, in fact they catch them less than half the time. The reason that this is manoeuvring. The impala can control the chase by making a turn at the last minute and because the cheetah is going so much faster its more difficult to so its more about that. Its about ecology and how they live in a world with a fine balance of survival, the predators need that equal survival rate for that whole ecosystem to function. So we need to protect both of the predator and prey. I guess from this conversation we should give the impala more attention than perhaps we have because in their own way they are remarkable because they are escaping brigid. Exactly. The study looked at lyons, cheetahs, the impala and the zebras that they chase. And its a very close match in terms of athleticism between predator and the praise so that evolution is something that these remarkable high tech colours have shown the scientists. So we absolutely need to give more attention to the biomechanics and how these animals move in the wild and what we can learn from their incredible athleticism, what we can see in the drama of the hunt when we watch these amazing documentaries. Weve had crows, cheetahs and impala is this week, what about next week . I wont spoil it, weve got more animals next week. She has a lot of stories but i dont think she has a camel controversy. Twelve camels have been disqualified from a beauty pageant in saudi arabia after it was discovered their owners gave them botox. This is true, honestly the King Abdulaziz camel festival is held here, in rumah, thats 120 kilometres northeast of the capital, riyadh. Let me show you pictures of the event where thousands of camels are paraded. Judges look for shapely lips, perfectly placed humps, muscular physiques and leathery mouths. It involves dozens of events, including the beauty pageant, camel racing and camel milk tasting and it has a combined prize money of 57m £40m . Well see you tomorrow hello, time to update you on the longer term prospects of the weather across the British Isles. Some hunted and eat about the next five days and then a degree of uncertainty about how we take things forward into the heart of next week. Some forward into the heart of next week. 55 some uncertainty about the next five days. New date new pressure, not with the same depth of intensity that we saw with stormed georgina but quite a bit of shower activity. Northern ireland with a low close by will be a bar close by will beer baja to the showers and then a raft of showers will walk into southern scotland, and then quite widely across the western side of england and wales in the mid afternoon. Separate showers into the western isles, the north and west of scotla nd isles, the north and west of scotland and then try a brighter weather until we pick up at shelly theme. Southern parts of scotland, theme. Southern parts of scotland, the north and west of england, and much of wales seeing more than their fairshare of much of wales seeing more than their fair share of showers, the best sanction for england perhaps to the east midlands, lincolnshire, towards east midlands, lincolnshire, towards east anglia, showers in kent and sussex and a fresher feel than was the case at the start of the week. By the case at the start of the week. By friday we reinforce that fresher feel because the breezes, such as they are, will be coming down from they are, will be coming down from the north and the north west and what essentially will be a lovely day. A cold start and not the warmest day, despite all that sunshine still a peppering of showers along the Eastern Shores and later on some rain is likely from a weakening of frontal system, the forerunner of something more active, yes, just in time for the weekend for these western areas. The east will tend to be a little dry for the greater part of the day. Some progress on this frontal system, the rein in its southern portions, probably lighter and patria but many of these areas, i think this will be the trend for much of the weekend. Look at this run of mild air coming up look at this run of mild air coming up and across this area of the British Isles, moisture laden, there will be more wind and rain, but many of us with lower cloud, temperatures around 11 and 13, not a lot of difference by monday, sunnierfor the southern part of the British Isles but a little further south, this front is important if you are on its northern flank because brighter skies here at temperatures taking a dip. The mildest air near to the south of that weather front. This is where it gets a little murky with regard to specific detail. We think theres a trend at the moment to push that cooler regime further south across the British Isles. By the middle part of the week there are signs that High Pressure will try to dominate the weather across the southern parts of britain. Wet and windy weather across the northern half of the British Isles, we suspect that a blip because the High Pressure will be pushed further the western side of the British Isles, that will allow a north easterly run of wins to be established and that is not a particularly warm direction. So what are we saying about next week, driest to the south, some mist and fog, west and windy with those coming in across the north but as i say theres deal of uncertainty about all of that. Tonight at ten. Downing street says the Prime Minister is appalled by allegations that women were sexually abused at an all men Charity Dinner in london. An undercover reporter 5 hired as a hostess 5 filmed at the president s club dinner last week and said she was groped. Its sparked outrage.
