You looking out for, what are the films we might hear a lot of in the next half hour . I expect the title the shape of water to feature very heavily, people are tipping it to go for 14 nominations, which would put it on an equal footing with titanic and last years la la land, so record breaking possibility, but whether it will be a winner i dont know. I expected star, sally hawkins, to be nominated, directed Guillermo Del Toro from mexico, and as you can see, the Production Design is rather fantastic, as you can see, the Production Design is ratherfantastic, so a lot of craft categories, music as well. It isa of craft categories, music as well. It is a very strange, a fishy story even, about a mute womans admiration for a sea monster. It is not out in the uk yet, but it won in venice in september last year, so a film that has got a lot of legs, just not in one of its lead characters. And three billboards outside ebbing, missouri did very well at the golden globes, cracking central performance from frances mcdormand, who doesnt love her . I think she is quite remarkable. It has divided critics in some ways, in terms of issues of race, they could be questions about that. The film is doing very well, it won at the acting awards at the weekend, suggesting this is the favourite for oscar glory at the moment. I think it will feature very heavily in the nominations, a film by london irish director martin mcdonagh, featuring a powerhouse performance from frances mcdormand, who won for her performance in fargo 21 years ago. Frances mcdormand, who won for her performance in fargo 21 years agolj cant believe it was that long m would be one of the longest gaps between winners, she will definitely get nominated for her performance. Obviously, Woody Harrelson stands a chance, in the supporting characters category, as does sam rockwell from the same film. It is offensive and equal opportunities, foul mouthed, a firecracker of a script, about a murder ina firecracker of a script, about a murder in a small town, and how it results in a kind of tinderbox atmosphere. And extraordinary depiction of small town america. In terms of the general mood as we go into the 2018 oscars, and how that also might influence the voting and the lists that we were here in a moment, a year dominated by abuse scandals, the me too campaign, by harvey weinstein. Whether we will see greater recognition of female voices, that there will, to some extent be female empowerment coming through in this list. In many senses, last year was an annus horribilis for hollywood, can it put this behind itself now and show that it is adaptable and can be spry and light on its feet and adapt to what is going on off the screen . I think we will see that, i think we might see only the fifth ever best director nomination for a female film maker in greta gerwig, whose film maker in greta gerwig, whose film lady bird has been winning hearts and minds all around, brilliant lead performance from the young Actress Saoirse Ronan from ireland, also wonderful screenplay by greta were greta gerwig, making her writing and directing debut. And laurie metcalf, who many people may have forgotten, from roseanne all those years ago, making a big screen comeback. Roseanne all those years ago, making a bigscreen comeback. They are terrific. A great double act, both of them will get nominations, im sure, but it is whether this female centred film will sweep all before it and get the norm and it deserves. There will be outcry, if i can tell you, if we end up with a group of white male directors, so i expect the academy will Pay Attention to that and put her in for her first film, which would be a remarkable achievement. She is only in her mid 30s, so it would be fantastic, but i will put my bias out there, i think lady bird is terrific. It will charm eve ryo ne lady bird is terrific. It will charm everyone by the end of this process. We are broadcasting to viewers around the world, but we are sitting in london following all of this in the uk, so we have to have a word about british contenders, because, goodness, i know we do well with acting talent, but this is a particularly strong year potentially. It is, led of course by gary oldman playing winston churchill, the man who has gone from playing sid vicious to playing winston churchill, and extraordinary performance under layers of prosthetic make up, which i feel will also be nominated. It is directed byjoe will also be nominated. It is directed by joe wright, will also be nominated. It is directed byjoe wright, and i expect the film, darkest hour, will feature in the craft categories. It looks fantastic, i wonder whether that was its strength, very striking to look at. Almost theatrical, looking at history through the eyes of drama. Never forgetting it is gary oldman under all that make up, but his performance burns through it all. It isa performance burns through it all. It is a terrific fusion of everything coming together, a very enjoyable film, i like it very much, gary oldman is hugely deserving, is not just for this performance, and his whole career. I expect him to lead the way, which i think winston would be proud of other nominations, sally hawkins, and Daniel Day Lewis, three time winner already at the oscars, extraordinary record, i think you will be nominated again for what he is billing as his final performance, a retirement flourish for his role as a 1950s could juri ide film called phantom thread. Couturier. Couturier. And Daniel Kaluuya . A fantastic talent in the film get out, a sort of horror , comedy, satire, it is a fantastic film, and i expected to be rewarded when the nominations are read out very soon its my we will head over to los angeles right now for the First Tranche of nominations. It is all brought to you by the academy. Let go to la. When we hear the sound of the envelope tearing. And the winner is. The oscar goes to. The oscar goes to. And oscar goes to. Yes cool studio as you gathered, thats how the academy has chosen to do it this year. We will be in la in a moment for the rest of the categories. A lot of films people are familiar with, we heard a lot of star wars and blade runner, the brits are doing well as well . Fantastic news for Sarah Greenwood and katie spencer, nominated notjust once but twice in the same category for Production Design. Fords darkest hour also beauty and the beast they are ruling the studio system the shape of water already has seven nominations in the categories. On course to at least match the 14 nominations Record Number at this point. Dunkirk doing very well with six so far. And darkest hour, almost in the shade with four. Doing fa ntastically in the shade with four. Doing fantastically already. Yes, interesting to see what is coming through there. Its interesting, every year we talk about the big films, a majority of people go and see them. Star wars, those films dont always, rightly or wrongly, get recognition at the oscars. We have reflected on this over the yea rs. Have reflected on this over the years. Some say with the caveat that these are the craft categories. They are important but they do not get talked about. It shows the expertise, in sound mixing, like blade runner and star wars, being mentioned here. It is encouraging to film fans, on the basis of what they are doing. That strange presentation they gave there, all female lead by actresses. We saw this on sunday night, at the screen actors guild, all presented by females. It is having an effect already, that there isa having an effect already, that there is a female dominance in the nominations. And your thoughts on what stands out so far for you . I am wary, im looking at my list, i made notes every time a brit is nominated. Iam notes every time a brit is nominated. I am conscious this is going out worldwide. We dont want to be too brit centric. It is lovely to be too brit centric. It is lovely to see the talent and craft skills we have in this country. We talk about it in acting terms and we may see more on that in a moment, in the other categories. It is something that we do so well in the uk. We have a great studio system like pinewood, people hone their craft is here and in the theatre. They translate from television to the big screen. Roger deakins has been nominated for cinematography. His 14th time, he hasnt yet won. I must mention that we have a record, history being made. A female cinematographer, a black female seminoma photographer. Cinematographer. Rachael morrison, to then be nominated as a cinematographer at the oscars. A Glass Ceiling has been brokenjust 110w. Glass ceiling has been brokenjust now. That is extraordinary and it is brilliant. Mudbound is an extraordinary film. And it has only taken 90 extraordinary film. And it has only ta ken 90 years extraordinary film. And it has only taken 90 years of Academy Awards to get to that point mudbound is interesting. It is something that has been available on netflix. It opens up another debate about the Academy Awards. We may see it nominated among best picture. Recognition now that cinema is changing. With what people watch and the way they watch things. The academy, always the Mount Olympus of preserving the cinema experience. They are having to change it and recognise it this year. Interesting, lets return to la. Applause cheering studio so, finally, the full list of nominations, nine films nominated for best picture. Remember, this is the third year where they are allowed a maximum of ten. Nine nominated for best picture. If our maths is correct, it is the shape of water leading the way. Yes, unlucky for some, 13. Im sure they will take it now a record has been broken. I mentioned rachael morrison, a female cinematographer but also greta gerwig, nominated as best director for her work on lady bird. Only the fifth female director to ever be nominated. You can try and work out who the others are the only one who has ever won is kathryn bigelow. Sofia coppola, and we will find the other one meryl streep was in there. We chuckled, it is. Her zist in there. We chuckled, it is. Her 21st nomination, breaking her own record the shape of water isnt yet out in the uk, another week before cinemagoers make up their own mind on that. There are many fascinating areas in this week. Greta gerwig, in director and screenplay, and the wonderful saoirse ronan, as we thought, here she is with laurie metcalf, nominated as best supporting actress. Lady bird with five nominations, an achievement for a first time film, an indie film, we are seeing that with these best picture nominations. They are in the lead. With three billboards outside ebbing. Get out. These films that we are seeing, they make the shape of the oscars. Things have changed, you do not get heritage products any more. The darkest hour is in there, and dunkirk you would expect that but we have different films in the make up of nine. It is exciting this year. Theyve done a very good set of nominations. Martin mcdonagh would not getting a nod for best director. There was the sense he may get it. He has been squeezed out. The film has a lot of nominations in other categories. I think he will win best original screenplay. He can be proud of his work, he could also get best picture. Lets speak to one of the british successors, a woman who i hope is opening the champagne, rachel shenton, the screenwriter of the silent child, nominated in the live action short film category, joins us now. Many congratulations, rachel thank you so much i try never, in so many years in this job, to say how do you feel. But i have to say how do you feel. But i have to ask you i honestly dont know how i feel. It is surreal. I feel very emotional. It is lovely news. People listening to us on the bbc, they may know you began as an actress in hollyoa ks. They may know you began as an actress in hollyoaks. You have written a very personal story. We are seeing clips from your film right now, rachel. It is the story ofa right now, rachel. It is the story of a young deaf girl where you and your partner, who worked on this, your partner, who worked on this, you deliberately wanted to cast a young girl who, is, indeed deaf herself. For those who do not know about your film, tell us herself. For those who do not know about yourfilm, tell us how herself. For those who do not know about your film, tell us how this film has come to pass and how you reach this amazing point of being an oscar nominee. My gosh, it is so bizarre, that sentence this story is extremely close to me. I am a writer and an actress. I playjalan, in the silent child, about a profoundly deaf little girl called libby, born into a hearing family. This story is very close to my heart. My dad was profoundly deaf and lived the last dozen years of his life being profoundly deaf. I believe that film is a powerful medium to portray this message and this story has not been told before. It needs to be told. Me and my fiance, the director of the project, we believe so much in authenticity in casting. Casting a profoundly deaf role, for our lead, that was essential. There was no other option. We knew that it would be quite difficult, because the brief is so specific. We set out to do it and we did it. Here we are. We are running out of time but before we let you go, who is on the plane with you . Who gets to go to the oscars . May, the director and our leading lady, maisie congratulations, rachel shenton, oscar nominee lets also talk to Sarah Greenwood, another successful brick here this lunchtime. Thank you very much for talking to us. You are not a first timer, you have been nominated before. Congratulations for your work on the darkest hour. Thank you. It is fantastic. Also, beauty and the beast we have two nominations. I should point that out, sarah. While pointed out that is positively breeding positively greedy doubling your chances of winning an oscar on the 4th of march im not a betting person but i cannot think it is something to do with us splitting the vote. But it is amazing to get this far. With two such different films, it is absolutely astonishing, actually. I cannot quite take it in. It doesnt get any easier the more nominations you get. It is more thrilling, it is fantastic. Jason solomons here, congratulations. Thank you. Thank you very much what about these films in britain, having them recognised in los angeles for oui them recognised in los angeles for our skills here . What makes it so special about what other craftsmen can do here . They are two such different films. Beauty and the beast amazingly, was all built and shot on the stages at shepperton studios. With the most phenomenal crew and crew of craftsmen. It was Old School Hollywood built in london. It was fantastic. Then you have Something Like darkest hour. What was incredible was you have these incredible locations. We went up these incredible locations. We went up to yorkshire and manchester. And in london. It is phenomenal. Everything that is available to us over here, facilities and locations, it is stunning. Long may it continue sarah, we wish you all the best. Congratulations. Iam genuinely a huge fan of your work on the darkest hour, i watched it only the darkest hour, i watched it only the other day and the first thing we both said was how extraordinary that film looked. We wish you all the best and we are crossing our fingers. Good luck again for the 4th of march. Sarah greenwood, nominated in two categories for her work on beauty and the beast and the darkest hour. So many more we havent ventured. Call me by your name has done pretty well in the list of nominations. Get out, it is worth mentioning another british talent with Daniel Kaluuya. Most people who are watching it do not know that he is british. Samuel ljackson had to say, why are these british actors taking our jobs . Why . Say, why are these british actors taking ourjobs . Why . Because he is so darn good fantastic, those nominations have been unveiled. Head to the cinema and find out who you think should win we will find out on sunday, the 4th of march. The full reaction to the nominations here on bbc news, and on the bbc news website as well. Enjoy your cinema going and thank you for being with us. Goodbye.
