And ade is back with the latest in what is trending in trouble. Travel. First this week, ive come to australias Northern Territory and one of the most iconic sites in the world a problem. All roof. Uluru. The giant monolith attracts more than one quarter of a million visitors each year. For many of them, climbing to the top is something of a rite of passage. But for the Indigenous People of central australia, the rock means much more. As well as being an important place a tourist, uluru is a sacred site. At the moment, tourist are allowed to go up to the peak but all of that is about to change. At the end of 2017, the people who manage uluru in conjunction with it grew to owners a decision to ban tourist from climbing the rock. The 600 million year old rock is at the heart of anangu culture. A belief that touching the red sandstone is a way of communicating with the gods and it is the basis of their creation stories. It is almost like the law and it is really something that is so integral, so important to anangu and those very stories are based in locations around uluru. I was the decision made in the first place to ban the client . A couple of reasons, primarily because anangu dont want to see people climbing its cultural reasons but also has been a significant number fatalities on the climb. They do get very sad whenever anyone get injured or dies and there have been more than 35 people that have been more than 35 people that have died. The ban will not come into force until october 2019 and until then tourists can continue to climb on days when the weather isnt too extreme. The base of the route has a number of signs asking tourists to it respect anangu wishes not to climb that many people ignore these. While the decision has been welcomed by many in the local area, but everyone in the Northern Territory is supportive of the band. I get the local Indigenous People, i get without coming from, i think it isa get without coming from, i think it is a shame because it is a fantastic place to visit. I think it is a good thing because people go up and they get hurt and the government spent a lot of time and energy rescuing people. Yes, that is a big issue. I mean it costs a lot of money to get to central australia, as you know, so to central australia, as you know, so if you are diminishing the experience, i think it has the impact somewhere. So while the closure of the climb have a negative impact on tourist numbers visiting uluru . Left foot in the stir up here. Saw led overnight and gently. To keep it that is coming local tourism bosses are working hard to show there are other ways to experience the rock. Here we go. Wholly moly. Uluru camel tours takes people out into the desert comic it gives them a great camel x variant, it allows people to connect to nature and the outback and what better way to do it, on the back of a camel. Dont try to tempt your body up. Our environmentally friendly, they browse on the vegetation here, they have flat feet so vegetation here, they have flat feet so they do not chop off the ground, they are a low impact and will, and they are a low impact and will, and they can go months without water so they can go months without water so they dont need a local water source. Unbelievable. You never get sick of that. The views from the Vantage Point are pretty breathtaking. For chris, the decision to ban the climb is welcome. Look, i think it decision to ban the climb is welcome. Look, ithink it has decision to ban the climb is welcome. Look, i think it has been long overdue and it has been something which has been talked about for many years. For myself, will it affect tourism . I think so. I think it will give people a better understanding about the anangu stories out here and also the culture. As well as establishing activities like camel rides and cycling tours, new attractions are being introduced to encourage tourist is to keep coming. And most popular of them all comes to life at sunset. Bruce munros field of light installation is designed to embody the energy, heat and brightness of the energy, heat and brightness of the desert landscape. What a way to finish my trip here at anangu. 50,000 lightbulbs here, glowing and it all looks like iridescence and sort of water. The work was originally installed in 2016 and was supposed to stay in place for a year. But due to the huge popularity of the piece, it will now be here until the end of 2020. A clear sign that uluru remains confident if you continue to attract tourists long after the ban comes into force in october 2000 19. Now, while many people get their travel inspiration these days online, some of us still prefer to gaze at a map or a globe to pick our next destination is we headed to london to meet some of the last people working in the intricate art of handcrafted globe making. There is something about loans that is sort of inspiring and sometimes looking at them, when im practising, i wonder what it is like ina practising, i wonder what it is like in a specific part of the world. They are quite special. Lam i am still learning how to make them. I was surprised by the complexity. You dont quite realise how difficult it truly is. Every single piece of the globe is on show. So every single bit has to be finished perfectly. You need to have the level of persistence, patience. It takes a lot of concentration. You failed so badly when you first have a go. At one stage, i was probably over £100,000 into the project and i still havent worked out how to make a globe and ijust had to crack on with it and understand that if i did it enough times, potentially, it might work and thankfully, it did. The difficult part of its fundamentally to me, he took a long time to work out is how to stretch a flat piece of paper onto a sphere and to do it without tearing the paper, ripping the paper, making it obvious it has been done. And that is really difficult. Slowly i started to learn how to be patient with myself and understanding the process. I have definitely become more of a perfectionist, purely because of the standard that is required. I think everyone is fascinated by globe from an early age. It is the answer to so many questions, it is something you can interact with all the time. When i see one i have at home, i literally look at it every single timei literally look at it every single time i go into the house and i spent every single time, without fail. |j think the perfect globe is something with character, something with meaning, people can add little things, little illustrations or highlighted areas of places that meana highlighted areas of places that mean a lot to them. Definitely makes people understand where they fit in in the world, when you first see a globe and you first get pointed out a little speck of land surrounded by ocean, it makes you, it puts thousands of questions in your head and it often makes you think you should be really careful about how you use the planet and things like that. A globe allows you to understand. To mexico city next, where you will find amazing street food pretty much everywhere. A global gourmet has been to meet one man whose culinary creation has been causing a thing of a stir. Still to come on the travel show. Finally this week, how would you like to be in charge of a park encompassing over 2000 types of plant and encompassing over 2000 types of plantand an encompassing over 2000 types of plant and an incredible 10,000 crocodiles . For many, it is a dream job. And when Kakadu National park put out a job adverts renewed park manager, it caused the global stir. So what does it take to run a park of this size . We caught up with the current park manager on one of his last days on the job. Every day is different and that is what makes the job interesting. Tourism is a big part of it so working to make sure that tourist sites are as good as they could be. There is a lot of interaction with wildlife. Two weeks ago one of the ranges called me up and said they had caught a crocodile. And they told me i needed to sexy. I asked what that was involved and i had to stick a finger into a slit on its underside and determine its vendor. Gender. We put a quirkyjob ad out there which was looking for a ceo of part time croc wrangler. It has had a huge amount of interest from around the world. It went viral and we had people from europe and america are interested. It is one of those jobs. America are interested. It is one of thosejobs. You america are interested. It is one of those jobs. You see a job ads sometimes and it says unique opportunity, an empty cliche. This one is certainly unique. There is no job like it in the world. Primarily this is Aboriginal Land so the traditional owners of the land have leased it back to us, the federal government, and jointly with them we manage the national park. The size of the park is an enormous. 20,000 square kilometres. In context, that is about the size of wales or half the size of switzerland. A workforce of about 75 people and they are extremely busy maintaining the park. We have a large influx of visitors in the dry season, in the middle of the year, may through october, and our rangers are doing biodiversity work, conservation work, operational staff and making sure that our visitors are safe and having a great time. One third of all australian bird species live within kakadu. We have 60 different kinds of mammals. Really diverse landscapes as well. Stone country, 1. 5 billion year old rocks, some of the oldest in the world. Ona rocks, some of the oldest in the world. On a rock is 20,000 year old rock art. We are living amongst a 65,000 year old culture, the oldest in the world. Imagine yourself in that, it is amazing. For me, the big challenge Going Forward is tourism and growing tourist numbers because there is a uranium mine leased within the park and that mine is closing down at the end of 2020. That provide a large amount of income and sustains the town of jabiru. Finding a sustainable alternative source of revenue for the town to keep people employed in Services Open is important so we are working closely with traditional owners and the Northern Territory government to look at how tourism can replace mining as a source of revenue can replace mining as a source of revenue and sustained the park. I would say the biggest challenge is ensuring that tourism grows in the future but continuing to work with traditional owners as well, making sure that there needs are met and aspirations are realised as well. Applications are now closed for the next lucky kakadu applications are now closed for the next lucky ka kadu croc applications are now closed for the next lucky kakadu croc wrangler. As workplaces are, it is not more lam afraid i am afraid that is all we have time for this week. Coming up next week, joe heads to israel to find out how these huge sinkholes have become the latest attraction for travellers to the dead sea. From me and the rest of the travel show team here in australia, it is goodbye. Hi there. Snow again caused problems on friday in scotland. Scenes like this were fairly commonplace. The snowiest place at the moment tulloch bridge, in the highlands, where weve nearly got a0 centimetres of snow lying on the ground. Now, the forecast this weekend, a couple of areas of low pressure, one swinging in today, another one thats going to be bringing in some heavy rain, and a change to milder conditions on the way for the second half of the weekend. This is how we start off your saturday, then. A band of rain will be working into southern and western parts of the country. A cold and frosty start in the north east, with snow showers again affecting parts of scotland, with an ongoing threat of ice, as well. The main uncertainty with the forecast through the weekend is how far north this pulse of rain will be during saturday morning. It could be, and theres decent evidence for it, that it goes right the way across northern ireland. If that happens, there is quite a risk that it turns to snow. Three or four centimetres quite possible here, similar snow totals possible across the high ground of wales, and perhaps also across the north West Midlands for a time. Whereas, further south, for the most part its cold rain will fall, although there will be some flakes of sleet mixed in, particularly over the high ground, for example the chilterns, and maybe the mendips as well. Now, through the rest of the day, those bright skies in scotland filter southwards into far north england and northern ireland. A slow change to the rest, a dull, dank day, with the rain easing off slowly, but were left with quite chilly conditions. Temperatures for most in the range of 3 5 degrees. Milder, though, in the south west. Looking ahead to saturday night, the second of those areas of low pressure that i showed you on the satellite picture a few moments ago starts to swing in. That will be bringing a band of rain across northern ireland. Ahead of that, it is cold, one of the colder nights of this year so far in scotland. Temperatures could be dipping down well, well below freezing, perhaps 8, 10 degrees, Something Like that. And then into sunday, what happens is this band of rain will be working into this colder air, and for a time, it could turn to snow. And that snow could be very heavy across the high ground of scotland, and across the peaks and the pennines, as well, perhaps as much as 10 15 centimetres of snow. Whereas if we get snow at lower levels, it wont last long, because it will transition back to rain as the milder air works in from the west. There will be quite a range in temperatures, then, for the second half of the weekend. Quite chilly underneath this band of rain, and still with a bit of snow mixed in across the north east. Milder air pushing in across parts of england, wales and northern ireland, boosting, for some, the temperatures to double figures. And thats really the story of the weather next week. Milder air will swing right the way across the country, so the weather is going to feel much, much different early next week. Thats your latest weather. Hello, this is breakfast, with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Shut down. The Us Government grinds to a financial standstill. In the last hour, the senate failed to agree a budget to fund many public services, despite last ditch which went late into the night. The shutdown comes on the First Anniversary of his inauguration. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers will now be told to stay at home. Good morning, its saturday the 20th of january. Also this morning british tourists injamaicas montego bay are warned to stay in their resorts, as violence on the streets leads to a state of emergency. A bespoke brexit trade deal is on the cards insists
