Camp in the world, kutupalong, near the port city of coxs bazar in bangladesh. Its where around 570,000 Rohingya Muslims are forced to call home, having fled a violent military crackdown against them, across the border in myanmar. Officials from both countries have been holding talks about repatriating hundreds of thousands of the refugees, but the United Nations has expressed concern about the conditions theyd face if they went back. Mishal husain is at the kutupalong refugee camp for newsday. The across the entire landscape, right up to the border with myanmar. When you talk to the refugees it is clear just how complex when you talk to the refugees it is clearjust how complex the idea of repatriation is. This process, which the bangladesh and myanmar governments have been talking about today in the myanmar capital. Some of them say they will never go back u nless of them say they will never go back unless their rights are guaranteed and others are simply resigned to spending the rest of their lives in these camps. In a camp where hundreds of refugees are still arriving every week, there is much to be done. New wells, new shelters, all part of providing for growing numbers and preparing the camp for the monsoon rains. The more construction and expansion that takes place at this last camp, the more permanent it starts to feel. But at the same time, the talk of repatriating refugees is causing deep alarm. After the circumstances in which they fled myanmar less than six months ago, who would really trust that things had changed enough for them to go home . Thats because the destruction of their homes and villages continued even after myanmar said military operations had come to an end. These pictures were filmed by the bbc from the bangladeshi side of the border on the 10th of september last year, five days after the supposed ceasefire. This was your house . This is my house. That was also the day that irfan lost everything. A father of four, he was a secondary School Teacher back in myanmar and lived here with his extended family. And who is that . That is my brother. The authorities told them theyd be safe, and then the soldiers came. Translation the military surrounded the whole area and they had weapons. They opened fire as people were trying to leave. Some escaped, but others were killed. My brother was at home that day, but he went out to check on his shop. He never came back. We dont know if he was burned alive. We still havent heard anything. Away from the main camp, another area is home to hindus from myanmar, who were caught up in the violence. They have been identified as among the first to be repatriated. But even they are not ready to go without international protection. Translation if the United Nations goes with us, the hindus, we hope we will get security and be happy. If they are there, and we face any problems, the whole world will know about it. For now, it seems most likely that the children of these camps will grow up here without a country to call their own. The uns access to their old home, rakhine state, is severely restricted. They too call for change and for the rohingya to be doubly recognised. At this stage, i think it is premature to talk about returns in large numbers until three conditions exist. Number one, the issue of citizenship and legal identity must be addressed. Number two, there has to be a safe and secure environment for refugees to return to. Number three, reconstruction and the re establishment of Services Must occur. Services here are more organised. But its a precarious existence. A community who have been marginalised and persecuted are now entirely dependent on aid, and on what others decide for theirfuture. The other extreme is the weather bbc. That not only increases the risk of disease, waterborne diseases, but also means that the shelters, the very flimsy shelters in which the refugees are living could well be washed away or blown away. It is a period of considerable worry for the aid agencies and of course for the Rohingya Refugees themselves. Lets return now to our main story, the plight of Rohingya Refugees in bangladesh. The aid Agency Unicef is calling it a childrens crisis because of the large numbers of children who live in the camps. Its also voicing concern about the 25,000 refugee babies who will be born there this year and who wont have any legal papers. Last september the bbcs Justin Rowlatt met one rohingya woman who crossed the border when she was heavily pregnant. Hes been back to see how she and her new baby are. Hey, hello. Mohammed is three and a half months old now. Hello, mohammed. Hello. But right from birth, hes faced discrimination. The bangladeshi authorities wont issue birth certificates to rohingya babies, so, officially, mohammed does not exist. We first met his mother the day she escaped from myanmar. She was nine months pregnant. She told me how the myanmar army and local buddhists had attacked her village. But their troubles were far from over. Guards moved her and herfamily on. They said there was land over the hill. But not enough for everyone. Rishidas husband tried to stake out a plot, but he was driven off my other refugees. Her family had to sleep in the open, despite the rains. Finally, they found space to build a rickety shack. Her baby was born on the soggy muddy floor. Translation he was born right here. There was no midwife, no medicine, no mat, no wood to light a fire. It was so painful, but by gods grace, a girl from next door came and cut the umbilical chord and then i picked him up from the mud. Thats how my baby came into this world. Luckily, mohammed hasnt caught cholera or diphtheria, two of the deadly diseases that have broken out in the camps. But not having any official identity will be a real problem. It will be hard for him to get into school, to register for services and may make getting back into myanmar even more difficult for his family. So, like the rest of the refugees, he will have to eke out an existence here in bangladesh, stateless, with just a shack for a home, denied even the dignity of an official identity. You have probably heard expectant mothers complain about something called ba by brain. It is a feeling of fogginess or forgetfulness many feel during pregnancy. Now, a new Study Suggests it is a real phenomenon that affects cognitive functions as well as memory. I asked linda byrne, one of the researchers on the study, to explain what they have found out. So our Research Revealed that we actually found differences in the memory of pregnant women versus non pregnant women, and also a range of other functions, like executive functioning, which are things like planning and mentalflexibility. Did you get to the stage of sort of figuring out why the human body reacts in this way . Is there a specific reason . Ok, well, we dont know for sure. So our study was a meta analysis, so we took the results of 20 other studies, over 1,200 women we looked at, with research that has been conducted over the two decades. So this research doesnt necessarily tell us the reason behind that, but we suspect there are a number of things going on. Things that happen naturally during pregnancy, fatigue, things like the physical effects of morning sickness, tiredness, et cetera. And can you tell us when baby brain is likely to strike, and how long it can last for . Sure, so we looked at two different types of studies. We looked at the studies that take one time point in a womans pregnancy, and compare them to non pregnant women. In those studies, we found that the biggest difference was in the third trimester. That was where we found the greatest difference between pregnant women and non pregnant women. What we found from the longitudinal studies, those studies that follow the women all the way through their pregnancy, that the change happens early. So it looks like we start to see some cognitive changes between the first and second trimester, and then things slow down, to show us the greatest difference in the last part of the womans pregnancy. You often hear about it slowing down, after they have had the baby. Is there any foundation to feeling that way . In medical terms, what would you say . After they have had the baby. A lot of the studies dont throw the women into that post partum period. Immediately, in that post partum period when you have a new baby, of course you have ongoing problems with fatigue. Your sleep is interrupted, so its really not surprising that happens in that period. But we dont have any evidence from the studies we looked out that the phenomenon continues after the baby is born. Theres really conflicting evidence there. Some studies show us that women Start Performing back to their normal levels fairly soon afterwards. And others showed that those differences actually persist a bit longer. So we really dont know, which is why were doing our Current Research study at the moment.
