As australias batsmen pile on the runs. And the mother of one of argentinas disappeared children talks to witness. Thats in half an hour here on bbc news. Good afternoon and welcome to bbc news. In the last few minutes, President Trump has been hitting back on twitter at michael wolff, the author of an explosive book about the white house. This is what he has tweeted. The fake news Mainstream Media are taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook and screaming mental stability and intelligence. He then added, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. He continued, saying, i went from very successful businessman, to top tv star to president of the United States. I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius, and a very stable genius at that earlier one of the most senior members of Donald Trumps administration has said he has never questioned the president s mental fitness. The us secretary of state Rex Tillerson was responding to claims in a new book that mr trumps mental powers were slipping. He had already been forced to deny claims a few months ago that he called the president a moron. Jessica parker reports. Boarding a flight to camp david for high level meetings, and here is the image trumps team is trying to project order, professionalism, control. Getting on with the job of running the most powerful country in the world. But its all being overshadowed by this book, its contents forcing the us secretary of state into a remarkable statement. Ive never questioned his mental fitness, i have no reason to question his mentalfitness. We have different management styles. How i make decisions and process information, i have to learn how he takes information and processes it and makes decisions. Fire and fury quotes trumps former top aide steve bannon, the man who was the power behind the throne, the man credited with getting trump elected. Hes cited as describing a meeting between a russian lawyer and mr trumps son donald junior as treasonous. Its one of many supposed revelations painting a picture of a chaotic white house, a claim also that white house staff saw President Trump as a child. They all came to the conclusion, gradually at first then faster and faster, that something was unbelievably amiss here, that this was more peculiar than they had ever imagined it could be. But the president , as ever, has offered up a robust response overnight, tweeting but no matter what words come from President Trump, he will likely struggle to drown out these volumes. Jessica parker, bbc news. A lawyer who represented victims of the serial sex offender, john worboys, says some of her clients, whose cases werent taken to trial, want prosecutors to re examine the evidence. Warboys, a former black cab driver, is being freed after serving ten years in jail. He was convicted of 19 offences, although at the time police said they believe he attacked more than 100 women. Tom burridge reports. The decision to release rapist john worboys has raised profound questions about the way sexual crimes against women are investigated and whether the procedures for releasing criminals need changing. Worboys picked up young women in his black cab. He duped and drug them and then carried out his attacks. He was convicted of 19 offences in 2009 and given an indefinite sentence. But in total, more than 100 women said worboys tried to drug and assault them. Allegations made by some women were investigated but not pursued at the time. Now calls that their evidence should be considered again. I think women just wantjustice and want their voices to be heard. They came forward and gave their statements to police, the cps said, dont worry, we wont prosecute in relation to your case because he will be in prison for a long time and given an indeterminate sentence and will be locked away. They now want their case given the proper scrutiny it deserves, and for there to be a decision made as to whether the prosecution will be brought in their cases. Under law, we cannot know why the parole board has decided worboys no longer poses a risk to the public, but many argue the system should change so his victims know why he is being released. Tom burridge, bbc news. Earlier i spoke to baroness helen newlove, the victims commissioner for england and wales. She told me that this incident has once again shown that victims are being let down by the criminaljustice system. She wants to see changes to the victim contact scheme; and shes also calling for more openess in the parole process. When you go for an appeal hearing, there is a judgment that in the public domain, and i have been asking that perhaps parole boards should give a similarjudgment so that there is that open transparency, because it is a very closed hearing. Victims can go and give their statement to a parole hearing, or they can do radio link, and then we just wait for this letter or telephone call to notify you of the decision the parole has made, so i think the time is right, and if the government need to change the law, they need to change the law so the law, they need to change the law so that there is that open and transparent, and no longer a desert close decision. A number of people have complained that they had no idea thatjohn worboys was facing pa role idea thatjohn worboys was facing parole until they saw it on the news. The parole board has then turned around and said, that may be the case, but everybody who has been recorded as a victim will be told, look, we can keep in contact with you, how do you want to do it, whether by post, e mail, telephone, some cases may be sent by post and the letters havent arrived people have changed address. In other cases may be people have chosen not to be contacted. Presumably these are real issues in terms of dealing with victims. I have many victims who write in, and it is something i have been working with with probation, because it is not as simple as that. When you are asked to go on the victim contact scheme, it comes at the most raw time, and for me we need to look at how we better engage with victims to ally than the time to reflect and to allow them then to engage with probation officers and say, i would like that. And if they do want to get involved, we have to check on postal addresses and keep that updated, we cantjust six yea rs that updated, we cantjust six years down the line pop art by an address, and they may have moved and their circumstances be completely different, and it is a raw area. You are picking the scab off again. So we have to be Better Weather contact scheming gauges. I prefer it to opt out, not opt in, so that we dont lose that information. I spoke to the secretary of state last night and said we have got to look at the victim contact scheme, and this legislation needs to be changed for parole, we need to do that, and also with probation with the victim contact scheme, we have to ensure. But there were victims there that didnt have a conviction, but there are files were laid with the case. I also feel they should have the support, because there will be nothing worse than hearing this on a daily basis when they have not been contacted, and they could be very frightened that they bump into him in this to whatever, so we have to have a thorough review of seeing how we can look at victims on a discretionary basis. You say you spoke to, presumably that is the justice secretary you spoke to last night. Did he give you any mini reassurance about any changes that could be coming . When i go back in on monday, there is something i want to speak to his office, and his office are going to speak to mind. Baroness helena new love, the Victim Commission of the england wales. Easyjet, ladbrokes and virgin money are among the major employers whove revealed that they pay women on average at least 15 less than men. Organisations which employ more than 250 workers must publish theirfigures. More than 500 have done so. We will be speaking about this later this hour when we talk to Sophie Walker of the Womens Equality Party. The United Nations has been discussing iran , after the United States called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to discsuss the Anti Government protests in the country. China and russia said the unrest was not a threat to international security, while russia accused the us of abusing its position. Barbara plett usher reports. Nikki haley warned iran that the world was watching its response to the Anti Government protests. She used the platform of the un to amplify the message of President Trump, whos been tweeting support for the iranian demonstrators. The iranian people will determine their own destiny, and let there be no doubt whatsoever, the United States stands unapologetically with those in iran who seek freedom for themselves, prosperity for their families, and dignity for their nation. This unusually robust stance on human rights from the Trump Administration coincides with a policy to curb what it sees as irans malign influence in the middle east. The Iranian Ambassador called the meeting a farce. He repeated charges the protests were directed from abroad. There is a long history of bullying at the un, but this is a preposterous example, the purely internal affairs of a nation, in this case protesting that the iranian government has addressed with utmost respect for the rights of the protesters and with every attempt to deal with it peacefully despite violent infiltrators. 0ther Council Members urged tehran to allow free and peaceful demonstrations, and the Russian Ambassador accused the us of playing politics. Some suggested it was not an internal matter, not a threat. Translation mr president , the real reason for convening todays meeting is not an attempt to protect human rights or promote the interests of the iranian people, but rather as a veiled attempt to use the current moment to continue to undermine the joint comprehensive plan of action. Thats the agreement which restricts Irans Nuclear programme, which mr trump says is deeply flawed. He has to decide next week whether to continue waiving sanctions suspended under the deal. Barbara plett usher, bbc news, washington. The Department Store house of fraser has confirmed its asking landlords to reduce the rent it pays for some of its shops. The group is set to release christmas retail figures next week, with some analysts suggesting its takings over the Christmas Period were disappointing. Richard perks is a retail analyst with the company mintel. Hejoins us from helford in cornwall. Thank you for being with us this afternoon to speak to us about this. Any surprise in house of frasers decision to get its rent reduced . M is certainly a sign of distress, and not the sort of thing you really wa nt to not the sort of thing you really want to see any company doing. I think i would be with the analysts who are going to say sales were disappointing over christmas, because the most recent figures we had from the company were disappointed. The business is not doing well and it seems to have got worse since it was taken over. Doing well and it seems to have got worse since it was taken ovenm was taken over by a Chinese Company about three years ago now. What has changed as a result of that . Because the company itself and its confirmation that it is asking for a rent on some sort to be reduced so thatis rent on some sort to be reduced so that is driving forward with a transformation programme. And that is good to see, but it struck me that the policy that they had before developing very strong own brand to compete with their upmarket own brands seems to be right, and i thought that they were more or less continuing with that. But it must be the execution of that own brand policy. I think in much the same way we are seeing with debenhams. 0ne policy. I think in much the same way we are seeing with debenhams. One of the problems is that although they have got a good range of own brands, and designer brands, i think it is beginning to look a little dull. Debenhams issued a profit warning earlier this week and said like for like sales have tumbled 25 in the 17 weeks to december 30, despite the fact that it has slashed prices to try to boost flagging sales. House of fraser, debenhams, we all run the talking only for five yea rs we all run the talking only for five years ago about the demise of British Home Stores, and at the time we we re British Home Stores, and at the time we were saying, is the Department Store as a high street concept dead. Should we be asking those questions again in the light of these sorts of figures . I dont think it is right to lump British Home Stores in with debenhams and house of fraser, it was a different business. I dont know if there is any reason why the british Department Store should be dead. John lewis has performed unbelievably well right the way through this term, and although its figures arent great at the moment, we will see pretty solid results from john lewis when it reports this week. And a final impression overall ofa week. And a final impression overall of a high streets performance . Because i was hearing some reports saying, you can have lots of contrast, for instance, zara on the high street is doing really well, and asos online. What is going on on the high street . And asos online. What is going on on the highstreet . Over christmas it is difficult to tell, because we havent had enough figures yet. It is true online is growing fast, but so are the online sales of these store based retailers. So i think if you look longer term, the combination of stores and online is going to be a very powerful one indeed. But somewhere like asos competing at the younger end of the market with young, dynamic management, i think probably does have an advantage at the moment. Its a new format, its new and exciting, but online certainly has some way to go. But i think it would be ridiculous to suggest that the high street is dead or is going to die, it is always going to be the main place where you go and do your shopping. An optimistic note, thats good to hear. Richard perks from mintel, thank you very much for being with us. The headlines on bbc news President Trump has insisted he is a very sta ble President Trump has insisted he is a very stable genius, and his secretary of state says that he is never doubted the president s mental health. Liverpool have already said they will co operate with the investigation. And khawaja reached 150. Mason crane then took khawaja for real, but it now baking temperatures, the marsh brothers turning lead into their stooges, with every run scored only adding to the regrets felt by englands batsmen. A draining day in every sense. It was a pretty tough day, we are 150 overs into the innings, there are tired bodies out there, that is part and parcel of te st there, that is part and parcel of test cricket. Its not the first time we will have fielded 150 overs, and it would be the last. I thought that the way that the guys toiled out there and worked hard was really impressive, and that is good to see for us as a side going forward. England 133 runs behind, they will have to go back into the field when it will be even hotter, and they know this pitch is now spinning more just in time for their last innings of this ashes series. One of the planes caught fire, but there are no reports of serious injuries. Its the second such collision at Toronto Pearson International in five months. Bill hayton reports. Concern but then panic. After the collision, fire breaks out. Passengers begin to scream, while the crew call on them to remain seated. All of a sudden there was fuel all over the wing and then about a second or two later, not even a second, its kind of all ignited and there was a big fireball, and then everyone started yelling and panicking. The fire was on the other, empty airliner, and all 168 passengers and six crew were able to leave this plane safely by the emergency slides. They had just arrived after a four hour flight from mexico. Their plane was stationary when it was hit by the other airliner, which was being towed by ground crew. This is the second time in five months that planes have had minor collisions at canadas busiest airport. Inquiries are under way into how it could have happened. In the meantime, all are thankful that everyone here escaped without serious injury. More now on one of our top stories. Women in britain are paid on average 18 per hour less than men, according to figures released by large companies. So far more than 500 companies have revealed their gender pay gap, ahead of a deadline in april this year when organisations with 250 or more staff must publish the data or face a fine. At easyjet women earn 52 less per hour than men. And at virgin money, 33 . The company with the biggest gap to publish so far is the Womens Clothing chain phase eight, with a 65 lower mean hourly rate for female staff. Joining me now is the leader of the Womens Equality PartySophie Walker. Thank you for being with us on bbc news. To be clear at this point, we should say this is a new legal requirement for companies with over 250 employees, and they all have to do it by april. So we dont quite have the whole picture yet, so we are starting to get an idea of the gaps opening up. What you make of some of these figures . Ask pretty much any woman who works in a workplace, and she will tell you, yes, and . The fact that there is a pay gap is well. Its good that are getting to see this sort of formal exercise to demonstrate that, but i think it also demonstrates that there is a real lack of understanding about the reasons for the pay gap. And that is demonstrated particularly by the phase eight number, and the comments by the ceo saying what is really going on is that most mila please work in head office, and feeble employees to be happen to work in retail. We have seen a lot of strange stuff happening with this data. Hugo boss was another company that initially declared there was no pay gap, and then when investigated by the financial times, suddenly discover that they have 76. 5 median pay gap, so this doesnt work. There are no teeth here. The government cant sanction companies are having a pay gap, because it declines to impose fines for example, as we recommended. But there is a real lack of understanding unease companies about why women are ending up companies about why women are ending up in low paid roles. It is not enough to say itjust happens. Up in low paid roles. It is not enough to say it just happensm happens that women were, shop for and men working top office, there is more to it than that, and i suppose there is an irony given that this is a business that sells Womens Clothing, and women are being disadvantaged in terms of their opportunities to get to the highest levels in the company. But let me put you an example that easyjet gave. 52 lower for put you an example that easyjet gave. 52 lowerfor women put you an example that easyjet gave. 52 lower for women than put you an example that easyjet gave. 52 lowerfor women than men, and they said 6 of our pilots are women, and the average pay for a pilot is £92,000, while females make up pilot is £92,000, while females make up 59 of cabin crew and the average earnings there are £24,000. What it saysis earnings there are £24,000. What it says is that it is actively seeking to recruit more pilots being women by 2020. You may think that should happen sooner, and you may not think it enough, but hasnt the process of even having this, even if it doesnt in itself have teeth, force companies to begin to get their act together . I think there is a vast difference between the small number of company saying they will do some thing about it on the company saying, this just is what it is. Im glad to see that easyjet is doing something out about that phenomenal pay gap, but what would really help is an understanding of where this comes from, and this comes from an Education System that still occupationally segregates girls and boys by saying that boys are inherently better leaders or engineers and scientists, and girls are much better care is, and we dont value care, we dont pay for it are invested it. And also we have a huge problem with childcare leading on from that, because we have the most expensive childcare in the world in the uk, so i would like to see some of the ceos lobbying the government say, heres the size of the pay gap, this is what you can do about it, invested childcare, it affordable. It is vital to Economic Growth as indeed is shared parental leave. The government has said it is continuing to try to improve the offer available on childcare. Certainly in the last 20 years charger availability has improved, and yet that still doesnt seem to have done enough to shift the balance of the workplace . That is because we have done nearly enough in terms of childcare. At every budget, the chancellor stands up, and it is always a man, and says, we are going to invest in physical infrastructure, roads, bridges, housing, those are jobs that because our Education System still doesnt tackle segregation, those are mens jobs. Under womens budget group has shown that like for like investment in care yield twice the same amount of Economic Growth and jobs as construction. Is the evidence that the educational system is still gender biased in that terms of the advice it gives young people in portrays jobs . A lot of people who got kids of school age was so that there is a lot more awareness of women engineers, of men in caring roles, nursing, all those kinds of professions that perhaps once were evenin professions that perhaps once were even ina professions that perhaps once were even in a kind of media that kids are exposed to, that is much more balanced than it used to be even a few years ago. First of all, starting each argument by saying its better than he is to be doesnt mean it is good enough yet. People say to me, havent you got enough equality . No, you either have it or you dont you can look at the data from the young womens trust on this which is excellent. It is Still Producing an expectation, because our curriculum is still very heavy in terms of male role models, male versions of history. You go into a music class, all the pictures are of classical composers, they are mainly men. And as a result, we are still seeing science, engineering, technology, is somehow male domains that we have to crowbar women into, and on the other side of it, because we dont have for example enough men working in primary schools are secondary school teachers, we are still teaching boys that caring and teaching are not cooljobs for them. So there is a lot we have to do in terms of tackling educational role models. We also have to tackle careers of voice, and i hear stories of women being told, girls being told, wider and euboea nurse rather than a doctor, emphasis being on womens appearance rather than skills atjob interviews, and what goes on in terms of how you pay these jobs. If you send a young man is young woman to the job centre, a young man is moderately to be offered a job in construction which will pay around £5 80 per hour, and a woman is more likely to be offered a woman is more likely to be offered a job a woman is more likely to be offered ajob in care, a woman is more likely to be offered a job in care, which pays for pounds 80p per hour, and the pay gap starts right there. Sophie walker of the Womens Equality Party, thank you. The public coming to the aid of public transport on the streets of eastern boston, as snow and ice left many stranded.
