The world ring in the new year. London hosts its traditional fireworks display in front of a crowd of more than 100,000, and big ben welcomed in 2018, despite its restoration work. And in half an hour, and in halfan hour, i and in half an hour, i will be looking back on a momentous year in politics that saw the brexit negotiations getting underway. 0h, yes, and a snap general election. That is review 2017, the year in politics with me, ellie price. Good morning and welcome to bbc news. The chief executive of the british Catering Company compass and four members of his family have been killed in a seaplane crash in australia. Local Police Confirmed that Richard Cousins, who was 58, was on board the plane, which crashed into a river 30 miles north of sydney yesterday. He died with his two sons, edward and william, who were in their 20s, his fiancee emma bowden, and her 11 year old daughter heather. The australian pilot, gareth morgan, was also killed. Earlier today, detective superintendent Mark Hutchings from New South WalesPolice Marine area command held a press conference about the crash. We have, in the course of this investigation already, been in contact with the uk, and we believe, in fact we can confirm, that the persons involved in this matter, along with the pilot, would visitors from overseas. The plane is sitting ina from overseas. The plane is sitting in a relatively deep water, but it is not an insurmountable operation for us, we will have the divers attend the scene. We have had a meeting this morning about the logistics of that, that meeting is currently underway, but once we get those details we will then move forward in salvaging the plane, but of course we are dependent on conditions tarmac. I think the incident is. Talks for itself, this is people that have come over on holidays to visit australia, they run one of the most beautiful parts of the world, and for this to happen to them at a place like that is nothing more than just tragic. Mr cousins was chief executive at catering firm compass group. The company confirmed the deaths in a statement. Compass Group Chairman paul walsh said. We can talk now to our correspondent phil mercer, who is at the scene of the crash in New South Wales. Is there anything more that we know today about what might have caused this tragic crash . No, we dont, air crash investigators say their work could go on for many, many months, and their task is immense. In the first insta nce their task is immense. In the first instance they need to retrieve the wreckage of the seaplane which lies more than a0 feet in the crash site, which is a couple of miles to the north of where we are at westhead. The place came down in a place called Jerusalem Bay near the town of cowa n called Jerusalem Bay near the town of cowan on the hawkesbury river. As you can see, it is an invalid part of the coastline, it is relatively close to sydney, but the area where the plane came down is tucked away, ha rd to the plane came down is tucked away, hard to reach, so of course piecing together the last moments of the aircraft is key to this investigation, so what investigators need to do is to retrieve, salvage the aircraft to try to piece together to establish how and why a routine scenic flight could end in disaster. And what can you tell us about the victims . We know that 58 year old Richard Cousins was travelling with his two sons and his fiancee and her 11 year old daughter, all five british holiday makers have died, and we have been cleaning more information from eyewitnesses. There was a man speaking on australian radio earlier today saying that he was on a houseboat 50 metres away when the plane, in his words, nosedived into the water. This man says that he dived in, that he tried to open the fuser large door, the daughter of the plane, as it crashed. He said it was sinking so quickly that he was simply unable to open that door and try to retrieve 01 open that door and try to retrieve or help anyone inside escape. Another eyewitness has been saying how the plane turned sharply right before ditching into the water. All of these eyewitness accounts will form part of that investigation and, once again, air crash investigators do tell us this will be a very slow moving investigation, a very painstaking one, and they say their work could go on for many, many months. 0k, phil, thank you for the update. Scores of people who had travelled to liverpool to celebrate the new year have had to spend the night in a temporary shelter after a fire in a Multi Storey Car Park next to the citys echo arena destroyed more than 1,000 vehicles. Steve saul reports. The fire is thought to have started in one vehicle on the third floor of the car park. Emergency services arrived within minutes, but the flames quickly spread to other floors. Police say 1,a00 cars have been destroyed. Up to a,000 people are thought to have been left stranded in the city. The arena, on the citys waterfront, was hosting the Liverpool International horse show. No spectators or animals have been injured. Ive got a vehicle in there, yeah, so ive got a vehicle in there, yeah, so im unsure at the moment what it is going to be, we cant get anywhere near it. We have called family and friends from the north east, huddersfield, to come and because all up. My car. All our belongings in it. Everything. I came over from northern ireland, and all my stuff like, my suitcase and all my clothes are in it, all gone. Merseyside fire and rescue service say this is one of the biggest fires they have ever dealt with, with crews working under very challenging conditions from the outside of the building because of a real fear of structural collapse. The difficulty that we have is because this is so deep seated, is to physically be able to get into, right into the middle of the building to put the fire out, which clearly is the extent of which the fire has taken hold there, we will not be able to do that for quite some time, given the structural stability issues with the building as well. Liverpool city council are expected to help make arrangements to get those who have been left in the city back home later. Temporary parking arrangements have been made so the arena can operate as normal. Reports from iran said to more people have been killed in Anti Government protests in the south west of the country. The archbishop of canterbury has paid tribute to emergency workers in his new years day message. Justin welby said 2018 could be defined either by human suffering or the compassionate response to it. Heres our religion editor, martin bashir. Paying tribute to the unrelenting dedication of the emergency services, Archbishopjustin Welby chose the London Ambulance headquarters in waterloo to deliver his new year message. And he began by describing the terror attack at nearby London Bridge and Borough Market. 0n the third ofjune, as the terrifying events unfolded on London Bridge and in Borough Market, staff took over 100 calls from those caught up in the atrocities. The archbishop went on to catalogue other terror attacks at manchester, westminster, Finsbury Park and parsons green, along with the tragedy at Grenfell Tower. I visited Grenfell Tower while it was still burning. I remember the desperation and sorrow. You all right . Visiting Borough Market six months after the attack, justin welby witnessed the recovery of a community that, like others, has inspired the nation. In concluding his message, the archbishop asked, what will define us in the year ahead . Will it be the depth of suffering, or the breadth of compassion . The darkness, or the light of human kindness . It is a choice. But not one we have to make alone. Jesus christ, the light of the world, weeps for our struggles, works for our healing, and invites us to walk in his light. He is right there with us in the midst of everything. The north Korean Leader has said that he has a Nuclear Button on his desk. In a defiant new year message, kim jong un says now that north korea had developed the capability to hit all of the us mainland with its Nuclear Weapons, washington would never start a war. He added he would not order the use of weapons unless his countrys security was threatened. Translation no matter how much the United States shows off their Nuclear Weapons and frantically provokes war, now that we have a deterrence, the us will not be able to do anything, and if north and south korea put our minds together we can easily prevent war. As a responsible, powerful Nuclear State that promotes peace, we will not use our Nuclear Weapons unless an invasive enemy violates our sovereignty and interests. However, we will respond firmly to actions that destroy peace and security. 0ur correspondent sophie long has been analysing the message from the south korean capital seoul. I think ithink in i think in terms certainly of his message to the United States, there was nothing new, another defiant message saying, we have the Nuclear Capability that can strike anywhere on your mainland. He also said, i have a Nuclear Button on my desk. Does he have the capability to strike the us mainland in the way he has boasted about . The answer to thatis has boasted about . The answer to that is we do not know. We know he carried out the fixed and most powerful nuclear test in september 2017 and carried out a test launch of an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile in november, which he said could strike anywhere on the us mainland. Whether he has the ability to miniature rise Nuclear Capability and put it on a missile that can reach the United States, we dont yet know, there are many a nalysts dont yet know, there are many analysts think he might not be far off doing that. What was slightly more surprising was that he had a much more conciliatory tone towards south korea, his neighbour but also a United States ally. He said to them that he was open to dialogue and may even consider sending north korean athletes to the winter 0lympics, due to take place in south korea in february. That is important to the government here, president moon has said if that was to happen he thinks it would be a turning point in relations with north korea. Sophie long reporting. Irans president warns that violence and disorder will not be tolerated amid large demonstrations. Reports suggest the death toll has risen to four. Sport now and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres mike bushell. Hgppy happy new year to you. Happy new year. The old year, finished with plenty of drama in the premier league. There was late penalty drama in both of yesterdays premier league games. Crystal palace missed a late one to snatch a win over leaders Manchester City as their 18 match winning run, came to an end yesterday while west brom salvaged a point with a dubious penalty over arsenal. Adam wild rounds up the action. The message from fans was clear enough. Still, it is rather hard to imagine just how things could get any better for Manchester City. Never has a team been so far ahead at the end of the year. To their potential, well, there seems no end. But against crystal palace, this was a new year lacking celebration. Gabrieljesus, injured, leaving in tears. It was his replacement, sergio aguero, who went the closest in the first half. But this was not the brilliance from city that all have come to fear. Victory would have equalled the european record. The target, then, straightforward. Hitting it, seemingly less so. But palace are a side with aims of their own. They did have chances with which they should have done better. Everyone seemed to know it. And that, ultimately, for them, is how this will be remembered. In the 90th minute, awarded a penalty. Luca, though, unable to see the year out with a bang. So, not quite the perfect end to 2017 for either side. For both, new years eve, as is so often the case, a bit of an anticlimax. Elsewhere, a big day on the calendar of a rather different sort. At west brom, Arsene Wenger took charge of arsenal for the 811th premier league game, a new record. But there was much work to be done before any celebrations would be allowed to start. His team certainly made him wait. It wasnt until the second half until they found a way through. And even then it took a bit of fortune. Alexis sanchezs free kick, deflected. But that was still far from the end of it. Two minutes remaining, west brom were offered a hand back into it. This, deemed a penalty. And Jay Rodriguez gladly spoiled wengers special day. 11. A year laden with controversy and drama to the very end. Exeter chiefs start the new year ten points clear at the top of the rugby union premiership. Scarlets won away at cardiff blues 1a 11 in the pro 1a cardiff led at half time but scarlets fought back soon after the break. Rhys patchells try, their second of the match, sealed the win. The victory leaves them top of conference b. In the other pro 1a fixture, 0spreys beat dragons 22 9. British number one, yohanna konta, has started her season with a two sets to one victory over madison keys at the brisbane international. Its her first tournament with new coach michaeljoyce. She lost the first set to the american 6 a, but broke early in the second to take it 6 a and level the match. Keys then lost her serve at the start of the third and konta was untroubled by her opponent as she strolled through the set 6 3 to win the first round contest. Shell play Ajla Tomljanovic next. Englands cricketers have arrived in sydney ahead of the final ashes test which starts in three days time. The england head coach Trevor Bayliss says he still has full belief in all rounder, moeen ali, despite his recent run of poor form. Hes taken only three wickets and averaged 19 runs with the bat this series. He is always a guy that likes to keep playing. But. Look, i have got full confidence in him going forward, to be honest. I mean, it was only two months ago we were talking about him being one of the best all rounders in the world. Now, he reached the milestone, what was it, 2000 runs and 100 wickets. He got that quicker than everyone else. Thats all your sport for now. I will have more in the next hour. Thank you very much. China is banning most imports of waste plastics in a bid to cut pollution. Authorities say any waste thatis pollution. Authorities say any waste that is dirty wont be allowed into the country. Countries across the world have relied on china to recycle millions of tonnes every year at a cheap cost. We can now speak to our correspondentjohn sudworth who joins us from beijing. Why now . Why is china doing this now having for years been taking in so much waste products from other parts of the world . Well, this was a process that dove tailed with chinas economic development. For many years, it has used this supply of cheap, old plastic, reprocessed here in china to feed into its own sort of low grade industrial base. These were plastics being used in low end manufacturing, in construction industry, but of course, it all came at a cost. A lot of these repossessing centres have poor environmentalal safeguards. China is increasingly concerned about the issue of pollution, of course, and there was a real worry that this industry was contaminating soil and water and having a knock on Health Impact on communities living near some of these giant reprocessing plants and i think also a bit of political expediency as well. China is, of course at the moment you know, its leadership talking about this sense of national rejuvenation, its vision of itself asa rejuvenation, its vision of itself as a leading world power. That doesnt sit very well with being the worlds binman if you like and state media are making it clear in some of its commentaries this was a practise that simply had to change. So it fits with the political will then. Do you feel it is a genuine push for change . I think so. They are serious about it. It is 2a categories of waste that wont be allowed into china. Plastics, low grade paper, the sorts of things that other economies have long come to depend on china to take and it will cause a real headache for governments around the world which will, of course, now have to find new ways of disposing 01 have to find new ways of disposing or recycling millions of tonnes of this kind of waste and a lot of people suggesting, a lot of governments are pretty unprepared for what is going to be a Significant Impact on the Global Recycling industry. John, thank you very much. Rail users are travelling on the oldest trains since records began according to a report by a transport watchdog. The office of rail and road says older Rolling Stock can lead to problems with reliability and poorer performance. Ian palmer reports. People travelling on the Caledonian Sleeper Service between london and scotland have the oldest trains in britain at a2 years old. Merseyrail has the second oldest fleet at 38 years. Both operators plan to introduce new trains. A study carried out by the office of rail and road found the average age of Rolling Stock had never been higher at more than 21 years. It says the nations fleet in 2006 had an average age of less than 13 years. According to the campaign for better transport, some trains can be refurbished, but others like the pacers built in the 1980s as a short term fix should be scrapped. The department for transport says a,500 new carriages will be introduced across britain by 202a. It estimates the £7. 5 billion Investment Programme will cut the average age of the nations fleet from 21 to 16 years. From tomorrow, millions of train users will pay up to 3. 6 more for their tickets. The increase is the highest for five years. Bbc one launches its new flagship drama, mcmafia, this evening an eight part global thriller about the world of organised crime. It stars james norton, playing the english raised son of russian exiles with a mafia history, and features an international cast. Lets get a taster of tonights programme. And misha is with me now. This began life ten years ago as a non fiction account of the spread of organised crime. So how has it more offed from that into this drama series . Yes, ten years ago i wrote this book which was about how organised crime had globalised along with elicit businesses globalising in the 1990s and in the first decade of the millennium. I was working as the bbc correspondent in the former yugoslavia and i noticed how organised crime was using the fog of war in yugoslavia to move heroin or trafficked women through into their biggest market which was the european union. So i started exploring that world of globalising organised crime and then about four yea rs or organised crime and then about four years or so ago, a great writer who has written for hollywood and a great director, they are both british, although one was born in tehran approached me and said we wa nt to ta ke tehran approached me and said we want to take this world and turn it into a want to take this world and turn it intoa gripping want to take this world and turn it into a gripping drama. If you are a non fiction book writer, thats a dream come true. We worked closely making sure that the dramatic requirements of the family story and everything were not, did not obscure the authenticity of the world that they have created and its been a fantastic job that theyve they have created and its been a fantasticjob that theyve done. They have created and its been a fantastic job that theyve done. You argue that to organised crime, chaos, is a Business Opportunity and in the last decade there has been so much chaos in the world and you talk about the chaos of brexit as well. So do you think that that trend, that Tipping Point that you identified a decade ago is very much continuing and do you believe that organised crime st spreading further . Yes, the mcmafia culture has grown. There is no doubt about it and we have seen it penetrate some of the most power offices in the world. It is a huge business and i look at organised crime as a business. I try not to look at it from a moral point of view because people, when they read the book or see the series, they can make their own mind up about whether organised crime people are good people or bad people. 0bviously crime people are good people or bad people. Obviously there are a lot of bad ones amongst them. Some people become involved in organised crime because there is no other work to get involved in. However, there has been a push back against big scale political corruption and organised crime as well as its growth. We have seen it in brazil where there is a huge Corruption Scandal and we have seen organisations who investigate this stuff all around the world. And weve had the panama and Paradise Papers so we know much more about this whole thing works now and what needs to be done. On a personal level, of course, a dream come true for you. You say every week you will be holding a party to celebrate each episode . I think i was getting carried away when i said that. Maybe not. I will behaving some neighbours around tonight and i might get a bottle of vodka and some fake caviar in to celebrate it, but thats all thank you very much for coming along to talk about it. Mcmafia starts on bbc one tonight at 9pm. Now on bbc news, its been a turbulent year in politics, the headlines this morning theresa mays decision to call a general election appears to have backfired. It was with reluctance that i decided the country needs. The Prime Minister spells out her strategic goals. Conversatives are the largest party. History has been made. Article 50 has been triggered. Brexit negotiations in a shambles hear, hear sighs. Music i was born under a wandering star. 2017 was shaped by what happened when a pretty influential person went for a nice, long walk in the countryside and had a little think about things. That was, of course, theresa may, who went on a hike with her husband in april and came back thinking it would be a jolly good idea to call a general election. The decision made on that little stroll defined the year. But plenty happened in the months running up to it. The 2017 journey started, as we all expected, with brexit. Are we going to get a detailed plan, Prime Minister . Only a few days shy of the eu referendums six month anniversary, theresa may made a speech at lancaster house. It became known as the lancaster house speech. Setting out a blueprint of her main objectives for brexit negotiations. As a priority, we will pursue a bold and ambitious free trade agreement
