1am in london and 9. 30am in north korea, where pyongyang has fired an unidentified Ballistic Missile the first since mid september. South Korean Military Officials Say the missile flew east from a launch site near the capital, pyongyang. It reportedly travelled a distance of about 1000 kilometres before falling into the sea of japan. President trump told reporters the us can handle the situation and in tokyo, an emergency Cabinet Meeting will discuss the incident. 0ur Diplomatic Correspondent paul adams is in the south korean capital seoul. This is the first test by the north korean since mid september, and it comes, you know, after this long pause in which people had started to wonder whether there was something significant in the fact that we had not had a missile test in such a long time. Well, in the early hours of the morning, in the dead of night we got an emphatic answer. After two months without a test, north korea is back at the top of President Trumps agenda. A missile was launched a little while ago from north korea. I will only tell you that we will take care of it. This is the 23rd north Korean Missile test this year, the first since mid september. It took off in the early hours of the morning from pyongsong, north of the capital pyongyang. It flew east for about 1,000 kilometres, landing after 50 minutes in the sea ofjapan. American officials believe this was an intercontinental Ballistic Missile and say it flew higher than any previous test. In response, south korea conducted a precision Strike Missile test of its own. The bottom line is its a continued effort to build a Ballistic Missile threat that endangers world peace, Regional Peace and certainly the United States. Thank you, general. And we will take care of that situation. Thank you all very much, iappreciate it. Thank you. North koreas leader, kimjong un, has been seen in recent days visiting largely economic ventures. In the absence of fresh missile tests, observers wondered if his focus had shifted. This, it seems, was wishful thinking. Here in seoul, the president has convened a meeting of his National Security council. Most experts still think that north korea needs two to three years to complete its Nuclear Weapons programme, but yesterday a government minister said he wouldnt be surprised if kim jong un finished the job within the next year. North korea he said was developing its Nuclear Weapons much faster than anyone expected. The United States has stepped up pressure on north korea throughout the year. Military exercises the most visible sign of Donald Trumps uncompromising approach. Officials believe the pressure is making life harder for the north Korean Leader but kim jong un seems determined to achieve his Nuclear Ambitions and unwilling to talk in the meantime. Plenty of reaction here in the region. Shinzo abe, japans Prime Minister, calling for a meeting of the Un Security Council. In the last hour or so, we have been hearing from the korean president , moonjae in, and he has said that this is a reckless provocation. He has accused north korea of military adventurism. He said that peace with the north would not be possible unless this stops. I think whats alarming people about this is the fact that it was at this high trajectory, suggesting to those experts that the almost the entire continental us is now within range of the intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Thats not, of course, yet saying that they have the ability to deliver a Nuclear Warhead to the continental United States, and that is still the bit of this Nuclear Programme that is yet to be completed. But as the south Korean Unification minister said yesterday, he said it is possible that final leap, putting an effective Nuclear Warhead on top of a Ballistic Missile, that is something that they could complete in the next 12 months or so. Lets take a look at some of the days other news. Pope francis will be celebrating mass in myanmar within the next hour. This is his third day of his visit there. In august, pope francis called the rohingyas, his brothers and sisters as he condemned their persecution in myanmar. On tuesday after talks with the countrys de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, the pontiff urged myanmar to respect human rights, justice and different ethnicities. But he stopped short of using the word rohingyas, after being warned that it could spark further violence. For more on the popes visit we can speak now to our correspondent Jonathan Head whos in yangon. Jonathan, there has been so much anticipation for this meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi and the pope. 0f course, he is under immense treasure. How did he do . Pressure. In his own mind, pretty well. He came here as a diplomat as a moral leader and there were high expectations, or hopes, anyway, amongst human rights advocates of in supporting the rohingya and that he would refer to them why that name, one that the government does not accept and it is rejected by nationalists here. And that he would discuss their plight to begin his speech she could definitely hear references to the needs for all groups to be included and for the rights of everyone living in the country to have their right respected. But he avoided using the word rohingya and avoided any incident. Hard line monks profess themselves satisfied. They are very sensitive to the idea that foreigners may be interfering. And he has gifted Aung San Suu Kyi with what may be seen as a successful visit. In the end you need to remember that this pope he said he has come here to build bridges, not burn them. He also needs to look after the interests of the catholic community, around 700,000 of them, many from vulnerable and embattled ethnic minorities. Those factors played into moderating the stand he may have taken. The visit had been planned before the violence escalated against the rohingya but in terms of the opportunity to mention something, what kind of possibilities are there for the rest of his visit . Less so. Behind me as a hold racecourse in yangon where his mass will take place, he is due to arrive in around 30 minutes. He will do a papal tour and he is a touchy feely pope. When his car arrived, he took his car through the town when he arrived a few days ago, an ordinary car, he was reaching out of the window to try and touch people. It will be an enormous boost to the Christian Community here and the people will recognise that his passion for standing up for underdogs and for persecuted minorities and for religious tolerance will perhaps rub off in some of the meetings he has had with hard line figures. Met the chief of the armed forces who is driving the military operation. He also met one of the most hard line and senior monks, we know nothing about that meeting or the contents of the. And he has also will also be meeting the Ruling Council of buddhist later this there. He has made it clear that it this there. He has made it clear thatitis this there. He has made it clear that it is unlikely he will stray into controversial territory. He believes private comments rather than public statements may be more effective. As jonathan was saying, that massa is due to start shortly. That maths is due to start. The indonesian island of bali is still anxiously waiting to see if there will be a major eruption of its biggest volcano mount agung. Ash and smoke are already pouring into the atmosphere. The whole area is on high alert and the International Airport remains closed. Indonesias Disaster Agency says the volcano ash is moving southwest. Up to 100,000 residents in the area have been ordered to evacuate, as hywell griffith reports from bali. With ash billowing overhead and tremors growing underground, mount agungs eruptions so shows no sign of slowing. Sick and muddy flows are spilling from the surface. They are dangerous but not as devastating as the redhot lava which could follow. In the shadow of the mountain they have been preparing for months. Everyone knows the drill. These children have been reassured they will be safe as long as the evacuation plan is followed. For the thousands forced from their homes two months ago when the tremors started, the weight has been unbearable. There is no way of knowing when it will lend. Translation i have two young children. Government has a huge job on its hands and they are doing the best they can, actually. From my perspective of someone who has worked in many disaster zones, when i saw what was happening at camps it was an incredible as with the local people and the heads of villagers and the heads of the Womens Association and the government authorities. I have hear someone i would like you to meet. This is bumi. He is two months old. Wearing a mask. A few days ago we had considerable ash fall. He was born here and obviously his parents are balinese. They are very concerned about how will bumi do in this village which, in 1963 had anywhere from ten to a0 centimetres of ash fall on any given day during the time of the eruption. The eruption was not one event in 1963, it went on and on for many months up to a year and some days there would be thomas falling, other days there would be, the river would be full of lahar. This guy, his parents are concerned, they have sealed a room in their home where everyone in their extended family can get away from the ash. Robin. It is a privilege to meet bumi. I am impressed by how well he is coping with the mask. I would expect a child of his age to be pulling it off. What a wonderful character. He is beautiful. Is a beautiful child. Very calm. Breast fed, of course. That is one of the things we want to make sure that in this time of disaster that people dont come in, for example, and tried get Breast Feeding mothers to use infant formula. We will be in a situation where we may not have water pumps to keep our Running Water going. We may not have electricity, internet nor phone service. We dont know for how long but we do know that in this village we are prepared. And youre watching newsday on the bbc. Lets take a look at some newspapers from around the world. 0n the front page of the japan times is an article pre empting north koreas test firing of a Ballistic Missile on tuesday. The paper, which was published before the launch, reports that japan had picked up on signals that north korea was preparing another Ballistic Missile launch. It is the first one since september. The South China Morning Post has a front page story about the suicide of general zhang yang. Zhang was once head of the all powerful Central Military commissions political work department, until he was accused of corruption. The Philippine Daily Inquirer leads with the story of three men killed by police in a drug raid in manila. It says Security Camera footage obtained by Reuters News Agency proves the policemen killed the men without authorisation. The footage shows the police clearing the surrounding alley before the killing. Lets return now to our top story north koreas firing of an unidentified Ballistic Missile, the first such launch since september. Joining me via webcam from washington is military expert and senior fellow at the defence priorities think tank, Lieutenant Colonel daniel l davis. Here we are again, Lieutenant Colonel. Two months later, what is the plan of the North Koreans . Yes, what north korea is doing, as we discussed the last time we talked about this in september, is that they have to validate the operational capabilities of their missile system, and that requires several test is, and it requires some period of time, months, weeks in between, so that they can evaluate the information and data and make continued adjustments. So this is going to continue on, as in fa ct we this is going to continue on, as in fact we heard north korea say earlier today that they want to have their system completed by 2018, so we can expect several more rounds of test. All right, several more rounds of tests. How do you think will President Trump and the Us Government respond . Well, that is actually my concern. President trump today told reporters at a press conference at the white house that this missile, we are going to deal with it, i am going to deal with it, and take care of it. And later on fox news you saw a report to the American Enterprise institute coming out at advocating that trump should attack the missile site, from where those missiles came from. Now, that sounds really tough and firm, and like it is going to scare in north korea. It is not going to scare north korea. What is probably going to do is cause north korea to do the very thing that we claim we want to prevent, which is an attack. And that could have catastrophic results. The only thing that is going to actually work is that we have to keep the diplomatic pressure on, but with a strong deterrent to keep them from using offensively their weapons. We dont want to give them any excuse to use than themselves, though. There has already been a lot of diplomatic pressure, particularly from neighbouring china. You have President Trump declaring north korea a state sponsor of terrorism. Sanctions have been imposed. Week after week, month after month, but to no avail. Know, and here is what is going to happen. It is too late to try new sanctions or anything else to get north korea to give up their weapons no. And there is a very simple reason for that. Many things have happened over the years, that they now view the Nuclear Weapons as the only defence that they have to prevent the United States from attacking them. This is a deterrent on their part for us. It is not in any way, shape orform something that they want so that they can launch offensive weapons. All they want to do is live. They are not suicidal, and now, because of the diplomacy we have used in the past where we make deals with people to get rid of their Nuclear Weapons, like libya, and later on we go in and use air strikes to take them out, so we have made sure that he is not going to make negotiations now, because he would be negotiating away his only means of self defence, and he is not going to do that. So we are he is not going to do that. So we a re left he is not going to do that. So we are left with what we have right now, which is him with a nuclear weapon, and he is not going to be deterred from using it. Im sorry, he is not going to be deterred from having it, so we have to deter him from ever using it. The key right now as we must prevent war, because hundreds of thousands or possibly millions of people would pay with their lives if we take rash action here and cause a war. Thank you so much forjoining us on newsday. My pleasure, thank you. Space is filling up with junk. 0ld bits of rocket, fragments of space crafts, even old satellites, are all up there. And the amount of rubbish in space poses a threat to vital satellites, which could be hit and damaged. Now, a british team is sending up a spacecraft in the hope of grabbing some of the space junk and bringing it back to earth. 0ur science correspondent Rebecca Morelle explains. Trois, deux, un lift off. Blasting off. For decades, weve been launching into space. But what goes up rarely comes down, and space has become crowded with junk. The remove debris spacecraft could be the answer, the worlds first attempt to test how we can clean up celestial clutter. It will see if it is possible to snare a satellite in a net, and review how effectively a harpoon is. It will then bring everything back down, burning up as it enters the earths atmosphere. It has been assembled in surrey, and has cost £15 million. This is the last chance to see it before it is packed up for its launch early next year. This is the remove debris platform. Its going to be one of the worlds First Missions to actually demonstrate cleaning up space junk. This mission is incredibly important. We have technologies on here that have never been demonstrated in space before, and its urgent that we actually launch this mission now, so we can develop these technologies for use in the future. Since the early days of exploration, the area around the earth has grown more and more cluttered. It is estimated there are about 7,500 tons ofjunk, made up of old bits of rocket, fragments from defunct spacecraft, even tools dropped by an astronaut. Scientists believe there are now 500,000 pieces of debris the size of a marble or bigger, and each piece has the potential to do some serious damage. Last year, the International Space station was hit. This chip in a window was caused when it was struck by a tiny fleck of paint. You have been watching newsday. Stay with us. Hello there. If tuesday was too cold for you, i dont think youre going to find much comfort in the forecast for the next couple of days. If anything, it will get even colder. These northerly winds diving all the way down from the arctic. The air turning increasingly cold. And with that, some wintry showers feeding in across northern and eastern areas. Now, where the showers have fallen through the night through northern scotland, there is some risk of icy stretches. Could be ice across Eastern England as well. Temperatures generally holding just above freezing for the first part of the morning. Many of the showers at low levels falling as rain. But, over high ground, dont be surprised to see some sleet and some snow. Further west through the midlands into the west country, largely dry, with some early sunshine. A cold start. Quite a widespread frost here. The odd shower into West Cornwall and west wales. These will continue through the day. For much of wales dry, bright, but recalled any frost to stop the morning. Some showers into northern ireland. Some could be wintry. Just two degrees there. There is a chance of icy stretches through the morning as well. But, away from the showers, therell be a lot of crisp sunshine on wednesday for central south western scotland and down towards the south coast. Largely dry conditions, with some sunshine. A few showers in the west. These wintry showers continue in the north and east, where it will be windy as well. 3 7 degrees on the thermometer, it will feel colder than that. As soon as the sun goes down on wednesday night, noticed this haze of blue spreading across the map. A widespread frost. Some showers in the west. And these showers turning increasingly wintry across eastern areas. Into thursday, High Pressure remains out west. But this area of low pressure, if anything, will try to squash its way in. And, as the isobars squeeze together, the winds will get a bit stronger. Very windy across eastern areas. Showers mostly confined to areas close to the coast. If those showers drift any distance inland, they will be wintry, perhaps even some snow to fairly low levels. This is what it will feel like on thursday afternoon when you add on the strength of the wind. For many northern and eastern areas, feeling sub zero. For friday, the showers will be focused on the south east at first. There could be wintry at times. Then we see some sunshine, still chilly, and then a band of patchy rain pushes in towards the north west. Behind that, a hint of something slightly milder. A milder weekend to come. A lot of dry weather but with a lot of cloud, and some patchy rain at times. Im kasia madera with bbc world news. Our top story.
