Get in touch with us using the hashtag beyond one hundred days. Hello and welcome im katty kay in washington and Christian Fraser is in london. This is the first day since 1980 that Robert Mugabe has not been fully in charge in zimbabwe hes under house arrest and the military says its temporarily ta ken control of the country. His fate is still uncertain and the army says this isnt a coup but today at least he clearly isnt running the country. The military says it wants to remove criminals around the 93 year old head of state. They may mean the president s wife, grace, whos been on a power grab of her own recently, apparently with the aim of assuming her husbands job when he eventually moves on. But mrs mugabe, whos now in namibia, was not a Freedom Fighter and she doesnt command the respect her husband earned through years of Armed Struggle against british colonisers. Heres the latest from our zimbabwe correspondent, shingai nyoka. This is what zimbabweans woke up to this morning, tanks on the streets of their capital city. Something that has never happened in nearly a0 years of independence. So, whats changed . The answer came early this morning with a statement from the military on state tv saying that the mugabe family were safe and that this was not a coup. What the Zimbabwe Defence forces is doing is to pacify a degenerating political, social and Economic Situation in our country. Which, if not addressed, may result in violent conflict. Overnight, president mugabe, the worlds oldest leader, lost control of the country he has led for 37 years. The generals say he remains president but clearly he is no longer calling the shots. The presence of the military is being felt here on the streets of harare and some parts of the city are in lockdown. This is as close as we can get to some of the military tanks that have stationed themselves at strategic positions. One, as you can see, blocking access to the president s office and another has blocked access to parliament. The president still has his supporters, especially in rural areas but here in harare, its a different story. Translation were going to have a good life now, were looking forward to christmas because of whats happened. We want to thank those who organised this and we want them to remain until our problems are resolved. Translation i want to thank the general for removing this tyrant. He was ruling the country as if it belonged to his family. Much will depend on how zimba bwes neighbours react, especially south africa. Its president jacob zuma spoke to mr mugabe earlier and he will now send south africas defence minister to zimbabwe to assess the situation first hand. I am hoping that the Defence Force will not move and do more damage, that they will be able to respect the constitution of zimbabwe as well as the people of zimbabwe. But in the end, this was all about a power struggle within zimbabwes ruling party. Last week, this man on the left, Emmerson Mnangagwa, was sacked as Vice President. Like mugabe he was a veteran of the countrys struggle for independence but in recent years hes found himself up against this woman, grace mugabe, Robert Mugabes young, ambitious and some would say ruthless wife, a one time typist and now one of the most powerful political figures in the country. She had wanted to take over as Vice President. A divisive figure. Listen to the reception. Booing. These were boos, not cheers. I dont care. And tonight, a warning from the British Foreign office to british nationals in the city. Stay at home, stay in your hotel room, wait until things settle down a bit. Zimbabweans now wonder what lies ahead. Change is clearly afoot but whether its what zimbabweans have been yearning for is far from clear. And joining us now from capitol hill is democratic senator chris coons who sits on the foreign relatiions africa subcommittee. Thank you forjoining us. I do not know what youre hearing from zimbabwe directly but as far as you know who was running the country now . By all the news reports we have heard including this from bbc, it is still the case that president mugabe is in title president but he is under house arrest for military and so under house arrest for military and so there is a question about what his status is. The current chair of the africa subcommittee is joining me in the africa subcommittee is joining meina the africa subcommittee is joining me in a call to our ambassador in zimbabwe ina me in a call to our ambassador in zimbabwe in a few minutes. And we look forward to getting a current on the ground assessment from our ambassador about conditions in the country. What is your understanding of how much Popular Support there would be for the military in taking this kind of action . As you just reported, grace mugabe has been a very divisive figure and president mugabe, his abrupt action to dismiss as Vice PresidentEmmerson Mnangagwa and replace him in the upcoming zanu Pf Convention with his wife is likely what sparked this action by the military. I think we can conclude from that that president mugabe, his efforts to change from a one man rule 201 family rule is a step too farfor one man rule 201 family rule is a step too far for the zimbabwean military and broader public to embrace. Obviously every embassy knows what is going on within the country. Presumably your embassy has been telling you that Robert Mugabe is not in good health he is very wea k is not in good health he is very weak and frail . Can you hear me . Yes, you just came back. Your embassy must have been telling you for some time now that Robert Mugabe is frail and weak and in pretty poor health so you must have been expecting bad at this moment would come . That is right, many people engaged in us africa relations or who watch african developments have been waiting for some time for president mugabe to have some succession plan. Further to be scheduled, fair and open elections. Mugabe is the longest running head of state in the world. And he is currently subject to sanctions from the United States because of human rights abuses and because of the way he has violated the constitution of zimbabwe. It is my hope that the African Union and other Regional Forces and leaders will encourage every party in zimbabwe to respect the constitution, to conduct themselves peacefully and that there will be a path forward that includes a free and open elections. And your committee has been critical about the way the economy has been run, the way the economy has been run, the corruption in the country and the corruption in the country and the way wealth has been spirited away. What would you like to see happen . I would like to see a clear path forward for the restoration of democratic rule through free and fair elections. I would like to see a peaceful transition and restoration of public confidence. And if that could be done in short order that would be the most positive thing for the people of the country. The United States has contributed to humanitarian relief in recent years because of the colla pse in recent years because of the collapse of the economy. And significant humanitarian challenges due to famine and food shortages. We will continue to stand with the people of zimbabwe but the United States and many other countries have long been critical of the rule of Robert Mugabe. Thank you very much. Let us know what transpires call with the ambassador. I lived in zimbabwe in 1989 with the ambassador. I lived in zimbabwe in1989 and with the ambassador. I lived in zimbabwe in 1989 and it was clear even then the country was heading for economic problems. There were long lines for the buses, a shortage of foreign currency, the land reforms were just beginning. It was the start of the aids crisis in zimbabwe and if someone had said thenif zimbabwe and if someone had said then if mugabe would still be in power 27 years later i wouldve said it was just not possible. He is one of those African Leaders who has defied all the laws of nature and longevity and managed to cling to power for longevity and managed to cling to powerfor a full 37 years. Remarkable. He has never shown any inclination to step aside or accept defeat at the polls. I was there 15 yea rs defeat at the polls. I was there 15 years ago reporting for the bbc and i remember going to one place and i saw there was a famine that year because the farms were failing and had been a drought. There bags of maize stacked up against the polling station and if you had a zanu pf ca rd station and if you had a zanu pf card you could take one of the bags with you but if you were from the mvc you were denied. And by back then, 15 years ago, you could see food aid was being used as a political weapon. So this was also a stand he took notjust against white farmers but against his opponents in the country. You feed voters when they come to the polls, a long standing tradition in africa. Today donald trump has tweeted about basket ball players needing to be more grateful to him, his strong relationship with xi jinping and the iniquities of fake news. He has not so far weighed in on the future of Republican Senate candidate roy moore whos been accused of sexually molesting teenagers. Lots of republicans in washington are waiting for him to do so. They want the president to settle the candidates future and ideally force him to get out of the race. Mr moore denies the allegations and he continues to have the support of the local republican part. Heres Rajini Vaidyanathan reporting from montgomery, alabama. Out on the campaign trail, roy moore was defiant as he hit back at allegations of Sexual Assault. I am now facing allegations, and that is all the press want to talk about. But i want to talk about the issues. I want to talk about where this country is going. In the past week five women have come forward accusing him of sexual misconduct, dating back several decades. He denies the claims. The youngest said she was just 1a when she was sexually assaulted. Beverly young nelson says she was 16 when he forced himself on her. I thought that he was going to rape me. I was twisting and i was struggling and i was begging him to stop. The formerjudge is no stranger to controversy. He is pro gun, anti gay, does not believe in evolution, and he once said islam was a false religion. At a gathering at the Montgomery Country Club the majority of voters we spoke to were not troubled by the allegations. You cannot tell how old anybody is down here in the south, that is for sure. Because you know some of these girls look like theyre 20. Some look like thy are 1a but i dont know, thats why i say ijust feel it is really suspicious it took a0 years for anyone to come forward. I think they have been put up to it. There may have been some problems 40 years ago, i dont know about all that, but i will say this. Judge roy moore is a righteous man, he is a good man and he wants to win for this country. Unfortunately in this state i think he is still going to win. I do not think he should. Here and across this state there is still huge support for roy moore. Many say they do not like being told what to do and believe that this is a political conspiracy conceived by the democrats. But beyond these quarters there is growing pressure on roy moore to step aside. Back in washington Senior Republicans have been lining up to denounce him. Roy moore should step aside. The women who have come forward are entirely credible. He is obviously not fit to be in the United States senate. Fresh from his trip to asia, donald trump will now have to decide how to deal with this unfolding scandal. A year ago he himself was the subject of Sexual Assault allegations which he denied. But they did not hurt his path to the white house. With roy moore still ahead in the polls, it might not make a difference in this race either. In the last few minutes roy moore has sent out a tweet, we believe in god, the constitution, the sanctity of life and the sanctity of marriage. Where everything that the washington elite eight, we will not quit. But it looks as if hes running out of allies even those on the conservative media station fox news. Host sean hannity who has been a die hard supporter issuing a stern ultimatum. For me, thejudge has 2a hours. You Must Immediately and fully come up with a satisfactory explanation for your inconsistencies that i just showed. You must remove any doubt. If he cannot do this then judge moore needs to get out of this race. This country has way too many issues and problems. The American People deserve 100 truth and honesty. And rajini joins us now from montgomery, alabama. It is interesting, the voices of people who support roy moore and im sure they think the Washington Post is just part of the liberal media conspiracy but when they hear fox news host sean hannity raising questions about him and his past does that ring a bell with him but then . Not necessarily, that a band that you saw in the report their was mainly republicans and every single republican ive spoken to came up with three main reasons why they still support roy moore. The main one is that they simply do not believe these women who have come forward with these allegations. They have issues with the time it took the women to come forward with their stories. And many also said they believed this is a democratic plot. They kept using the word collusion and that they think it is fa ke collusion and that they think it is fake news. That of course plays into what roy moore was saying, in many ways a reflection of what we saw not just now in recent weeks when there was the run off for the senate seat but also during the election, a battle between the washington elite, people like Mitch Mcconnell and the Washington Post liberal media as they say, and between southern evangelicals and conservative values. So even if sean hannity is saying something odd that people here are Still Standing behind roy moore. Many people in alabama say they do not like being told what to do by people from outside. And there is not going to be a trial over this, no fact finding mission. These allegations just go too far back in time . That is right, and that is what many people i was talking to yesterday said. There is no charge here, and that is because the time has passed. So there is no proof. But it is quite telling that people do not at all in certain camps here believe the women in any way. And they believe as i said that this is simply an attempt to discredit them. Will this affect the outcome of this race, well weve been told in a couple of hours from now the Republican Committee here in alabama will be talking to discuss whether 01 will be talking to discuss whether or not to decertify roy moore from the candidacy. Now if he was decertified that means if he was to win the race then the republicans here could then hold another election for the senate seat. But thatis election for the senate seat. But that is pretty unlikely if you have many local republican groups, not just those i spoke to last night by the number of republican associations who have issued state m e nts associations who have issued statements saying they are solidly behind roy moore. That can cause a split in the party probably is also the option of having another candidate, that republicans could rally behind another candidate and eve ryo ne rally behind another candidate and everyone could write that name on the ballot and they could potentially go on to win the race. But critics of that theory believed it would simply split the vote and could play into the hands of the democrats. And we just had that tweet, roy moore has been tweeting quite a lot and says hes not going anywhere. He knows he has the support of people here in the state and will continue to stay in the race and could potentially end up winning the seat. Thank you and the president is due to speak about this in about half an hour. The other day we spoke about the president not being his biggest fan, he needs to do something to keep the numbers in the senate and maybe he could kill two birds with one stone. It would getJeff Sessions out of washington, it would help them hang on to the senate. They only have a two seat majority and theyre trying to get through a lot of legislation, tax reform bills for example and beeney the senate majority. So that could make sense, but would Jeff Sessions buy it, going back to being a senator from alabama or would buy it, going back to being a senatorfrom alabama or would he buy it, going back to being a senator from alabama or would he see that as a bit of a demotion. He would want some assurances. Back to oui would want some assurances. Back to our top story in zimbabwe. Lets go live to zimbabwe now and our correspondent there is anne soy. Give us a sense of what it feels like there tonight . A lot of questions, people are apprehensive about what is going to happen next. It appears to be calm, people going about their business. Children going back home from school. But people are asking what is going to happen to the country. President mugabe has beenin to the country. President mugabe has been in power and 37 years and being in leadership has been a symbol of stability even though the country has gone through so many problems economically. But this is a moment in history, but people do not know what form the future will take. So the next step to be taken by the military is going to be very important in what direction the country heads. What is clear right 110w country heads. What is clear right now grace mugabe, and her whereabouts are not certain at this point, may have fallen out of favour with many people especially in the military. They seem to favour the former Vice President who was sacked last week, Emmerson Mnangagwa. The regional leaders are also heavily involved in the process of trying to broker a kind of end to the process and returned to civilian leadership. The military insist that the president president mugabe is still president. We do not know until when, he is under house arrest. So a lot of uncertainty but also theyre saying this is not a cool even though it very much looks like one. And in 2013 when there was a coup in egypt, they were suspended from the African Union so it could be the military does not want to antagonise other leaders on this continent. Thank you very much. Communication is of course tricky at the minute. At least ten people have died after heavy rain caused flash flooding in greece. Many people were trapped in their homes and vehicles after the storm struck towns surrounding the capital athens. A number of others are still missing. The us secretary of state has called for an independent investigation into widespread violence against myanmars rohingyas muslims. Rex tillerson pledged more airfor refugees aid for refugees who have fled to bangladesh, during a visit to the country, describing the scenes as horrific. Lebanons president michel aoun has publicly accused saudi arabia of detaining its Prime Minister. Saad hariri announced his resignation unexpectedly during a visit to riyadh. Mr aoun said nothing justified his continued absence and it was a breach of his human rights. Australians have voted by a big majority in favour of legalising same sex marriage. The results of the historic nationwide poll shows more than sixty percent of people supporting changing the law. The Prime MinisterMalcolm Turnball says he wants to pass a bill by christmas. Pope francis is not a man of bling. Hes known to drive a simple ford for trips inside the vatican walls and shuns expensive vehicles on trips abroad. But today he got the keys to this a white, special edition lamborghini huracan, worth 180 thousand euros. But the pope wont actually be cruising the dream car on romes cobbled streets anytime soon as he wont be keeping it. Graffiti on the bonnet that is the papal signature probably worth more than the car. He has blessed it as well. The vatican say the vehicle will be auctioned at sothebys, with proceeds going to three different charities. One of them includes a fund to rebuild homes and churches for christians forced out of iraq by so called Islamic State militants. 0260 in 2. 5 seconds, ijust had to check. Im not hearing a tiny note of envy at the moment the idea that the pope. Are you going to be bidding on it . Not after the diamonds last night. You have bankrupted diamonds last night. You have bankru pted yourself next diamonds last night. You have bankrupted yourself next year then, i will give you that lamborghini. And we have some pictures, pulp mill beals through the years. Lets go backin beals through the years. Lets go back in time. Popemobiles. Lets ta ke lets take a look. My little story, when the pope came to america a year ago he was driving as we said in one of those little fiat cars. Driving through washington and i raced down on my bicycle to capture a glimpse of the pub going by. There you go. This is exactly what i saw, the windows one down and he was waving to the crowds. And i thought, good for you. We forget now because we have become so used to this pub but it was a sea in every message that he sent, that this is going to be a church where i put four people at the centre of the church. This is no more the vatican of the wealthy. And the powerful. And all that moving out of the vatican and driving that fiat car. I have to say that lamborghini makes me rethink the whole thing. I have only once driven a fiat 500, with only two doors, at an Airport Parking place, i had never driven one since. We should never driven one since. We should never be given time to talk about cars this is beyond 100 days from the bbc. Coming up for viewers on the bbc news channel and bbc world news. As the military moves into zimbabwe and president mugabe said to be under house arrest, what next for the man whos ruled the country for 37 years . And the so called westminster rebellion the fallout from a newspaper article brandishing these tory mps as brexit mutineers thats still to come. Today across many parts of the country it was not a pretty picture. Grey skies and drizzle and that continues through tonight. But tomorrow some very different conditions on the way. This cloud on the satellite picture is moving in our direction, that has a cold front and behind that we have colder air which is soon going to move into the uk and turn much colder. You will notice the temperatures dipping. So through tonight the cold front starting to encroach into North Western parts of the uk. By the end of the night it is somewhere across southern parts of scotland and northern ireland. To the south the air is still mild with still some drizzle. The first thing the morning still pretty overcast across southern areas of the uk. But with increasing breeze ahead of the front, the cloud will start to break up front, the cloud will start to break up so front, the cloud will start to break upsoi front, the cloud will start to break up so i do not think thursday morning is going to be as grey as what weve just had. This is the cold front and behind that you can see temperatures a lot lower, down into single figures. A bit of mountain snow across scotland and a rash of showers for the afternoon. But look how much brighter it is, the cloud push towards the south. As the cloud push towards the south. As the weather front moves into the south east. So around 1a degrees in london but for most of us more like 8 degrees. But theres tonight into friday, the cold front moves away, we are in high pressure, the skies should clear and for many of us apart from the north, it starts chile with a frost around and basically then were in for a fine autumn day. Temperatures around eight seven, 8 degrees in the far north. Then clear skies continue into friday night so saturday morning across many parts, there will be a frost, and the temperature is perhaps getting up to around 12 degrees. But for most of us in single figures. Then saturday into sunday, a low pressure moves in and the end of the weekend looking potentially wet.
