Here in the uk the bank of england is expected to raise Interest Rates and in the us its widely reported Jerome Powell will be nominated to get the top job at the fed. With me is cornelia meyer, chair ceo of the business consultancy, mrl corporation. Cornelia, ill be speaking to you a little later in our news Briefing Media review but first lets talk about the bank of englands key decision on Interest Rates. It is all about the news today of gerome powell. It looks like it is him. It makes sense from a donald trump respective. He respects millionaires and generals. This person worked at the Carlisle Group and isa person worked at the Carlisle Group and is a safe pair of hands. Yes. He will be continuity, follow on from janet yellen. Absolutely. And one thing that is good about him is at carlisle, he looked after the industrial segment. So, he carlisle, he looked after the industrialsegment. So, he has carlisle, he looked after the industrial segment. So, he has a real connectivity to the real economy. Lets talk about the uk, the Interest Rate decision of the most closely watched meeting for some time. It is thought we will see the cost of borrowing go out for the first time in a decade. Your thoughts. Is it the right time and if so what will the impact be . For me it is not the right time. Yes, we have seen inflation. But that is because the pound went down and we importa because the pound went down and we import a lot. That fed into the system. And we do have exit, and there is quite a bit to expect of turbulence. So, if the Interest Rate goes up and the pound goes up, all the benefits we have so far of a lower pound which helped us exports will go away. Pushing up inflation to 3 , that worries the bank of england. Yes. But that is done. Inflation has come through because they have such competition. They did they have such competition. They did the drip, drip, drip. Ithink we they have such competition. They did the drip, drip, drip. I think we are done with pushing up inflation. Thank you. For now the big she will join us again for the news review. Also on the programme. After one of the best world series in years, the Houston Astros take the title. The israeli prime minister, yitzhak rabin, the architect of the middle east peace process, has been assassinated. A 27 year old jewish man has been arrested, and an extremistjewish organisation has claimed responsibility for the killing. At polling booths throughout the country, they voted on a historic day for australia. As the results came in, it was clear. The monarchy would survive. Of the american hostages, there was no sign. They are being held somewhere inside the compound, and student leaders have threatened that should the americans attempt rescue, they will all die. This mission has surpassed all expectations. Voyager one is now the most distant man made object anywhere in the universe, and itjust seems to keep on going. Tonight, we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of ourarms, or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals. Youre watching the briefing. Our headlines. Officials in new york city have filed terrorism charges against an uzbek immigrant over tuesdays deadly truck attack. President trump has criticised the american Justice System for terrorism suspects, calling it a joke and a laughing stock. Lets stay with that story now. Lets speak now to irene bloemraad, an expert on immigration and a professor on sociology at the university of california. Thank you for being on the programme. In the last hour, President Trump has tweeted that he believes this terror suspect should get the Death Penalty. What do you make of his reaction to this so far . I think that if you look at immigration in the United States, it is largely successful. There are over a Million People who have become legal permanent residence in the us every year. It has been that for a long time. He is focusing on one person who has done a horrific extremist attack, which we have u nfortu nately extremist attack, which we have unfortunately seen in other countries in europe. But to do this since shortsighted. Lets talk about that. He is talking about tightening control who comes into the us, the travel ban. He feels he has traction now on that story and may well get that through. Your thoughts on the processes he is pursuing at the moment. So, the us does a lot of vetting of anyone who becomes a legal permanent resident of the us. And he has been targeting the entire immigration protocol, especially the programme the alleged attacker came in on, which is called the diversity lottery. It is a programme which allows anyone from anywhere in the world to put their name in a hat to become an immigrant to the us. Now, that seems very arbitrary, but once someone that seems very arbitrary, but once someone is selected to go through the same vetting process as any other immigrant. I presume the justice department, or in this case, the department of homeland security, probably did its job. Something you have pointed out is when it comes to crime in the United States, a lot less is done by those who have come into the us and become a part of the country as immigrants as opposed to home grown crime. Country as immigrants as opposed to homegrown crime. That is definitely the case. So, a few years ago, the National Academies of Sciences Published a report that goes over immigration into the us. As that report documents, immigrants in the United States commit much less crime than those worn here. Places with lots of immigrants tends to be safe places than places with american born people. They often just want to raise families and be pa rt just want to raise families and be part of communities. It does not mean we dont find extremists, people who should be locked in jail, but it is not prevalent in the immigrant community. Certainly in the uk, there has been a lot of analysis of how we try and integrate our immigrant communities. What is going on in the us as far as that is concerned behind the scenes outside News Headlines . Is there some good policy, bad policy . In the us, it is very interesting. There is actually no policy at a federal level. So, the us in general as a laisserfaire system. Once you are in the us, you live your life and you have to sort of pulled yourself up by your bootstraps. And of pulled yourself up by your bootstra ps. And then of pulled yourself up by your bootstraps. And then it depends on where you live. Some states in the us have programmes, counties might have programmes, governments might have programmes, governments might have programmes, governments might have programmes, but there is really no National Integration programme. I think having one would be a benefit. I think that would be something that would make integration become even better in the United States. But on the whole, the National Academy has concluded that immigration in the us is relatively successful. There are areas that can be improved. But in general, things are going well. Again, you have to remember that a Million People are becoming legal permanent residents every year. Its been 100 years since the Russian Revolution. To look back on the historic period, our moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg has been travelling through russia for a series of special reports this week. Steve began his journey in St Petersburg, and has since travelled onto moscow, and then yekaterinburg, before ending up in khabarovsk, some 6000 kilometres away from St Petersburg in the russian far east. From there he explains how it would take several years and a civil war before the bolsheviks established control over the whole of russia. This man and the Russian Revolution have won things in common they are both 100 years old. Born in 1917, he lived and survived three famines. He has fought for wars. In his lifetime, czarist russia then soviet russia have fallen apart. That is a nation survives that century . Translation because our people are strong and they are patriotic. We love our motherland and we are ready to die for it. His home is k ha ba rovs k to die for it. His home is khabarovsk in the russian far east. Here, china is closer than most russia. And the cradle of the revolution is a world away, with more than 6000 kilometres between us and St Petersburg. It would take the bolsheviks five years and a brutal civil war before they conquered the area. The decisive battle was near khabarovsk. Soviet area. The decisive battle was near kha barovsk. Soviet mythology area. The decisive battle was near khabarovsk. Soviet mythology painted the reds as heroes. The white army deservedly crushed. But this version of history is crumbling. Just like the battle site memorial to the red heroes. And that is because the official view of the revolution has changed in russia. To those in power, here, today, brad october is not any longer a real celebration. Red october. In russia, the future is applicable. So is the past. It applies to almost any period of this countrys history. So often hear the past is rewritten according to who is in power. In this school museum, which is open to the public of their display guns and bayonets unearthed in the forest. They try not to take sides, red or white. But not a ron welcomes that. Translation the soviet union was not that long ago. So sometimes what we see now about the white army does not go down well with supporters of the ussr. But not everyone. Back in his flat, i am shown a commendation from josef stalin. Translation revolution day is like my second birthday, because it is the birthday of the ussr. And that is unsha keable the birthday of the ussr. And that is u ns ha kea ble loyalty to the birthday of the ussr. And that is unshakeable loyalty to a country which no longer exists. Steve rosenberg, bbc news, khabarovsk. Heres our briefing on some of the key events happening later. We went again tomorrow, we qualify as top of the group. To me, that is important. Because after, we can look a bit at the rest of the competition. With three events left until the race to dubai champion is crowned, contendersjustin rose and Henrik Stenson have been speaking the first rounds gets underway at the Turkish Airlines open, in antalya. Some, clear skies, net in the opportunity to see a wondrous moon. That was the way that in basingstoke in hampshire. That was certainly the case in basingstoke in hampshire. Drift a little bit further north to aberdeenshire, and difficulty in seeing the end of the road at times. The reason for the difference quite an active weather front in the north. Clearer skies in the south. Hence some fog patches to start the day in some of the southern counties. And a chilly start underneath the clearer skies across northern scotland. But at last, at last, some good news for the northern parts of the British Isles, especially scotland and northern ireland, which saw quite a bit of rain during the course of wednesday. Clearer skies, a chilly start. There is the old weather front. Not a lot of weather along it, save for a lot of weather along it, save for a bit of cloud and the odd bit and piece of rain. Underneath clear skies overnight fog will have formed. It could be dense, certainly around rush hour. One or two spots will be lingering well into the morning as that frontal cloud slumps its way into the southern counties. Behind it a decent amount of sunshine with a lot of dry weather. Not overly warm, it must be said. There are cooler as following that front into southern counties, where we saw about 15 or 16 on wednesday, and now it will be closer to 12 or 13. That red sox into the near continent. The skies again in southern counties. Actually start to friday. Some fog around, i would have thought. That dress off into the near continent. A new weather front is coming to scotland and the far north of northern ireland, and breezy their for that. Now, far north of northern ireland, and breezy theirfor that. Now, as far north of northern ireland, and breezy their for that. Now, as we get into the start of the weekend, you will notice it will be much cooler across all parts of the British Isles as cooler air floods in on what is going to be a noticeable north westerly breeze, but before we feel the effects of that, we need to get rid of the front spring in the rain into southern and eastern parts of the British Isles. It will take a bit of saturday before it eventually gets away from east anglia in the south east. Come sunday, that north westerly is very much the dominant flow. Again, sunny spells and showers even in the south east. This is Business Briefing. Im sally bundock. More cash and more controversy.
